Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:01.46\00:00:04.27 that gives hope and fosters permanent, 00:00:04.30\00:00:06.53 positive change in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:06.57\00:00:09.64 and their communities. 00:00:09.67\00:00:12.27 Countries include Zambia, Kenya, 00:00:12.31\00:00:16.44 India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. 00:00:16.48\00:00:21.65 Child Impact's investment in the lives 00:00:21.68\00:00:23.59 of more than 3,500 children 00:00:23.62\00:00:25.89 continues to yield infinite returns. 00:00:25.92\00:00:28.79 Outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:28.82\00:00:31.26 to providing an education and a home for deaf 00:00:31.29\00:00:34.13 and blind children and orphans. 00:00:34.16\00:00:36.36 Above all, Child Impact's sponsors 00:00:36.40\00:00:39.13 give hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:00:39.17\00:00:41.74 The country of India 00:01:01.32\00:01:02.66 has experienced a great deal of progress 00:01:02.69\00:01:04.69 in the last 50 years 00:01:04.73\00:01:06.93 from being a top technology country 00:01:06.96\00:01:09.03 to having their own space program, 00:01:09.06\00:01:11.03 India's rise has been amazing. 00:01:11.07\00:01:13.97 In spite of all this progress, 00:01:14.00\00:01:15.67 there are still areas of the country 00:01:15.70\00:01:17.51 that have not seen these advancements. 00:01:17.54\00:01:20.21 One of these places is in the Indian state 00:01:20.24\00:01:22.14 of Odisha, 00:01:22.18\00:01:23.51 specifically the mountain area of the Koraput district. 00:01:23.55\00:01:27.32 Here is found a region full of tribes 00:01:27.35\00:01:29.42 that are still living the same way 00:01:29.45\00:01:30.99 that their ancestors have for thousands of years. 00:01:31.02\00:01:34.69 It is usual for girls 00:01:34.72\00:01:36.06 between the ages 10 and 12 to be married off 00:01:36.09\00:01:39.06 and some of the most remote tribes still sacrifice boys 00:01:39.09\00:01:42.60 between the ages of 6 and 11, 00:01:42.63\00:01:44.47 with the hope of appeasing the spirits. 00:01:44.50\00:01:47.17 There are thousands of children here 00:01:47.20\00:01:48.84 who have no hope for the future 00:01:48.87\00:01:50.74 because if they're able to escape 00:01:50.77\00:01:52.24 an early marriage or death, 00:01:52.27\00:01:54.01 the most they have to look forward to 00:01:54.04\00:01:56.01 is malnutrition and poverty. 00:01:56.04\00:01:58.75 I've had the privilege of visiting Jeypore many times 00:01:58.78\00:02:02.58 and it's an amazing drive. 00:02:02.62\00:02:04.79 To get there it's about four hours 00:02:04.82\00:02:07.32 and you see tremendous scenery, 00:02:07.36\00:02:09.59 you see large farms, you see various small villages 00:02:09.62\00:02:14.23 and it takes about four hours. 00:02:14.26\00:02:17.90 Seeing the need, Child Impact International knew 00:02:17.93\00:02:20.50 that they had to help. 00:02:20.54\00:02:22.90 Way back when we first started getting in the state of Orissa, 00:02:22.94\00:02:27.98 it was called then, 00:02:28.01\00:02:30.78 I learned about the Bonda tribal people. 00:02:30.81\00:02:34.05 Now, when I saw these people and I just couldn't believe 00:02:34.08\00:02:38.95 that in a country like India, I mean the ladies particularly, 00:02:38.99\00:02:44.69 the ladies were wearing 00:02:44.73\00:02:46.73 just a piece of cloth around their waist, 00:02:46.76\00:02:49.06 maybe from about here to there. 00:02:49.10\00:02:52.03 And, you know, in India all the women wear saris 00:02:52.07\00:02:55.04 and they're all covered up so nicely. 00:02:55.07\00:02:57.01 And so these ladies had this piece of cloth 00:02:57.04\00:02:59.51 just tied around their waist 00:02:59.54\00:03:01.38 and then on the top they just had beads, 00:03:01.41\00:03:04.71 strings and strings and strings of beads. 00:03:04.75\00:03:07.75 It reminded me of pictures 00:03:07.78\00:03:09.25 that I'd seen about Papua New Guinea 00:03:09.28\00:03:11.35 many, many years ago. 00:03:11.39\00:03:13.22 And I was told that they didn't have any school 00:03:13.25\00:03:16.16 for the children. 00:03:16.19\00:03:19.23 I didn't actually get right up to the village, 00:03:19.26\00:03:21.36 I saw a lot of the women, 00:03:21.40\00:03:22.76 but they said that the children were just totally naked. 00:03:22.80\00:03:27.90 So it was with those tribal people in mind 00:03:27.94\00:03:31.21 that we first started the school in Jeypore. 00:03:31.24\00:03:36.98 And to begin with, we just had one building, 00:03:37.01\00:03:40.15 I think it just had a thatch roof. 00:03:40.18\00:03:42.55 This small school opened in 1998, 00:03:42.58\00:03:45.25 but it soon became clear 00:03:45.29\00:03:46.62 that the facilities were less than ideal. 00:03:46.65\00:03:49.99 There was no campus before and the first time I came 00:03:50.03\00:03:53.66 everything was just like a jungle, 00:03:53.70\00:03:56.46 all the bushes and everything. 00:03:56.50\00:03:58.20 There was no road 00:03:58.23\00:03:59.90 and you can see the hill over here. 00:03:59.93\00:04:02.10 We had to cut that hill to make a road 00:04:02.14\00:04:05.34 and that was the road 00:04:05.37\00:04:10.21 to go to the main road and we could not... 00:04:10.25\00:04:14.68 At nights we could not go. 00:04:14.72\00:04:16.25 And during night, there is to be wild animals, 00:04:16.28\00:04:19.75 like tigers, leopards and there's hyenas and wolves. 00:04:19.79\00:04:24.93 And so the children, 00:04:24.96\00:04:26.29 those who were staying in the room, 00:04:26.33\00:04:28.83 the boys used to sleep on the veranda in the open 00:04:28.86\00:04:31.80 and girls used to sleep on the top floor. 00:04:31.83\00:04:35.44 And so at night it was really scary, 00:04:35.47\00:04:38.11 everything was dark, 00:04:38.14\00:04:39.74 except the building had just very dim lights 00:04:39.77\00:04:45.08 and that was the situation. 00:04:45.11\00:04:48.62 The first couple of years were difficult 00:04:48.65\00:04:50.22 for this fledgling school, 00:04:50.25\00:04:52.62 but it didn't take long for things to change 00:04:52.65\00:04:54.59 in a major way. 00:04:54.62\00:04:56.42 Garwin McNeilus and his wife Marilee 00:04:56.46\00:04:58.46 wanted to see the most needy projects. 00:04:58.49\00:05:00.90 Jeypore was on the top of Helen Eager's list. 00:05:00.93\00:05:04.53 Unbelievable that Garwin McNeilus 00:05:04.57\00:05:08.20 decided to come to that particular area and that is, 00:05:08.24\00:05:12.57 maybe, almost the most beautiful campus 00:05:12.61\00:05:16.95 anywhere in India. 00:05:16.98\00:05:18.31 Do you think, maybe I'm biased. 00:05:18.35\00:05:22.58 All it took was one visit to start the ball rolling. 00:05:22.62\00:05:26.69 And once Mrs. Eager brought Elder Garwin McNeilus 00:05:26.72\00:05:30.99 and his wife to visit this place, 00:05:31.03\00:05:34.50 just, she said just to see. 00:05:34.53\00:05:36.93 Actually, they were working for the blind school 00:05:36.97\00:05:40.14 and then she said let's go and see Jeypore. 00:05:40.17\00:05:42.90 So once when he came over here, 00:05:42.94\00:05:45.67 he was very much impressed 00:05:45.71\00:05:48.41 with the way children are learning over here 00:05:48.44\00:05:52.81 and he felt that he will do something. 00:05:52.85\00:05:55.38 He will take up this project 00:05:55.42\00:05:57.92 and this was completed by Maranatha, India. 00:05:57.95\00:06:02.42 And they worked in two phases, 00:06:02.46\00:06:05.29 first phase, they made the girls' hostel, 00:06:05.33\00:06:08.86 boys' hostel, school building and the dining hall. 00:06:08.90\00:06:13.23 And then second phase, and some staff quarters. 00:06:13.27\00:06:17.04 And in the second phase, they completed children's home 00:06:17.07\00:06:19.67 and the staff quarters and water tower. 00:06:19.71\00:06:23.81 It took just 10 months for construction 00:06:23.85\00:06:25.78 to be completed on eleven new buildings, 00:06:25.81\00:06:28.45 plus renovations to the two original buildings. 00:06:28.48\00:06:31.99 Even with all this new space, 00:06:32.02\00:06:34.39 it didn't take long for the school 00:06:34.42\00:06:35.92 to reach capacity, 00:06:35.96\00:06:37.69 so a system had to be implemented 00:06:37.73\00:06:39.66 in order for all the children to be properly cared for 00:06:39.69\00:06:42.53 and educated. 00:06:42.56\00:06:43.97 So have two shift, standard 4, grade 4 to grade 12, 00:06:44.00\00:06:49.90 their classes are between 7:30 to 1. 00:06:49.94\00:06:52.71 And then exactly at 1, kindergarten classes, 00:06:52.74\00:06:56.71 LKG to standard 3. 00:06:56.75\00:06:59.01 So we have this shift 00:06:59.05\00:07:00.38 because the classrooms are not sufficient. 00:07:00.42\00:07:04.29 We cannot put all the children in the rooms 00:07:04.32\00:07:08.36 because classrooms are not sufficient 00:07:08.39\00:07:11.29 and so we have this shift. 00:07:11.33\00:07:12.83 And secondly, all the students cannot eat food 00:07:12.86\00:07:15.76 at the same time in the dining hall, 00:07:15.80\00:07:18.63 so we have two shifts. 00:07:18.67\00:07:20.00 First the bigger children eat 00:07:20.04\00:07:21.87 and as soon as they eat and go to class, 00:07:21.90\00:07:24.61 then the smaller children eat. 00:07:24.64\00:07:28.14 And that big house is here to manage. 00:07:28.18\00:07:32.85 All of this is a lot of work, 00:07:32.88\00:07:34.92 but it is for a very important cause 00:07:34.95\00:07:37.12 and that is the children. 00:07:37.15\00:07:39.05 Children like Sulochana, 00:07:39.09\00:07:41.02 who dreams of a better life through education, 00:07:41.06\00:07:43.32 a life that her parents 00:07:43.36\00:07:44.69 are desperately working to give her, 00:07:44.73\00:07:46.53 but there is only so much they can do. 00:07:46.56\00:07:48.66 Father says, "I'm not educated, 00:07:55.54\00:08:00.24 I have a great desire to educate my daughters, 00:08:00.28\00:08:03.95 but then the financial problem, due to financial problem, 00:08:03.98\00:08:07.52 I don't think I can continue their education. 00:08:07.55\00:08:10.49 But I have a deep desire at least till high school 00:08:10.52\00:08:14.96 I'll try to educate them and after that, 00:08:14.99\00:08:18.83 if I cannot educate them, 00:08:18.86\00:08:20.83 the other alternative is only to give them in marriage." 00:08:20.86\00:08:24.93 In rural parts of India like this, 00:08:24.97\00:08:26.84 there are not many options for girls and young women. 00:08:26.87\00:08:30.54 Education is almost entirely out of the question, 00:08:30.57\00:08:33.27 so marriage is the only option. 00:08:33.31\00:08:36.18 This means that they're unable to pursue 00:08:36.21\00:08:38.01 any career or education 00:08:38.05\00:08:39.65 which would help them escape poverty. 00:08:39.68\00:08:43.22 The tribal areas are very poor and then you understand 00:08:43.25\00:08:47.76 the benefits of the child being at Jeypore school. 00:08:47.79\00:08:53.13 First of all, they have a bed. 00:08:53.16\00:08:55.06 Back in the village they sleep on the floor with a blanket. 00:08:55.10\00:08:58.40 Secondly, they get fed. 00:08:58.43\00:09:00.64 Many of these tribal families struggle 00:09:00.67\00:09:03.74 because they're just farm laborers 00:09:03.77\00:09:06.88 or they're trying to eke out survival. 00:09:06.91\00:09:09.44 And so when the kids are at the school, 00:09:09.48\00:09:11.41 the parents know the children are fed. 00:09:11.45\00:09:13.98 And thirdly, 00:09:14.02\00:09:15.38 they get a tremendous Christian education. 00:09:15.42\00:09:18.62 They have access to computers, electronic classrooms 00:09:18.65\00:09:22.89 and they get thorough teaching on all subjects, 00:09:22.92\00:09:25.89 which is far more than they would get 00:09:25.93\00:09:28.26 at the local government schools 00:09:28.30\00:09:30.50 in these remote areas. 00:09:30.53\00:09:32.87 Education is the key that unlocks a bright future 00:09:32.90\00:09:35.77 for children like Sulochana. 00:09:35.80\00:09:37.97 While the answer seems simple, 00:09:38.01\00:09:39.77 a lot has to go into providing an education to needy children. 00:09:39.81\00:09:44.25 The one thing that allows 00:09:44.28\00:09:45.61 Child Impact to provide an education is sponsors. 00:09:45.65\00:09:49.62 Without sponsors, none of this would be possible. 00:09:49.65\00:09:53.46 This is something that sponsored children 00:09:53.49\00:09:55.52 and their families are very grateful for. 00:09:55.56\00:09:58.03 He says, "They are very happy that their two children, 00:10:07.04\00:10:10.84 somebody is helping them to study." 00:10:10.87\00:10:13.27 And he says, "With his financial problem, 00:10:13.31\00:10:17.68 he would have never been able to send 00:10:17.71\00:10:20.05 his two daughters to the school." 00:10:20.08\00:10:22.05 And he's so thankful to whoever is helping them 00:10:22.08\00:10:26.15 for the studies and he's grateful to them 00:10:26.19\00:10:28.49 and he says that I pray to the God to bless them 00:10:28.52\00:10:32.56 and give them good health and strength. 00:10:32.59\00:10:35.50 I like to thank them from the bottom of my heart 00:10:35.53\00:10:39.27 because when I was small 00:10:39.30\00:10:40.74 from that time they take care of me. 00:10:40.77\00:10:43.37 And when I came here, 00:10:43.41\00:10:46.84 they helped me for that I'm very thankful. 00:10:46.88\00:10:50.21 If they could not help me, 00:10:50.25\00:10:51.58 I could not be here in this time 00:10:51.61\00:10:53.65 because my parents they could not pay any money. 00:10:53.68\00:10:57.59 For that I thank them from my heart. 00:10:57.62\00:11:00.19 Whether your support is large or small, 00:11:04.16\00:11:07.13 know that the blessings of every penny 00:11:07.16\00:11:09.70 are drastically changing a child's life for the better. 00:11:09.73\00:11:13.27 Thank you. 00:11:13.30\00:11:14.64 I just want to pay tribute to the co-founder Helen Eager 00:11:27.35\00:11:31.45 and the McNeilus family for establishing this school. 00:11:31.49\00:11:35.52 It just delivers a tremendous mission based service 00:11:35.56\00:11:40.83 to these kids from the tribal areas, 00:11:40.86\00:11:43.70 and it's just so exciting to see 00:11:43.73\00:11:46.23 these kids getting an education. 00:11:46.27\00:11:48.77 They have so much energy and they're just so eager 00:11:48.80\00:11:52.01 to get an education 00:11:52.04\00:11:54.18 and to have a future in their lives. 00:11:54.21\00:11:56.38 The story of Sulochana was very compelling. 00:12:10.13\00:12:13.06 To hear her father say he has a strong desire 00:12:13.09\00:12:15.46 for her to have an education, 00:12:15.50\00:12:17.60 but that he can't afford it, so normally, 00:12:17.63\00:12:19.97 he would give her into marriage. 00:12:20.00\00:12:22.30 Well, that's a challenge because most of these marriages 00:12:22.34\00:12:24.41 don't work and the girl is simply, 00:12:24.44\00:12:26.71 either enslaved labor or trafficked. 00:12:26.74\00:12:29.64
