Child Impact International 00:00:02.16\00:00:03.70 is an organization that gives hope 00:00:03.73\00:00:05.83 and fosters permanent, 00:00:05.87\00:00:07.24 positive change in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:07.27\00:00:10.31 and their communities. 00:00:10.34\00:00:12.94 Countries include Zambia, Kenya, 00:00:12.97\00:00:17.05 India, Nepal, 00:00:17.08\00:00:18.81 Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. 00:00:18.85\00:00:22.25 Child Impact's investment in the lives 00:00:22.28\00:00:24.25 of more than 3,500 children 00:00:24.29\00:00:26.55 continues to yield infinite returns. 00:00:26.59\00:00:29.36 Outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:29.39\00:00:31.89 to providing an education 00:00:31.93\00:00:33.26 and a home for deaf and blind children and orphans. 00:00:33.29\00:00:37.03 Above all, Child Impact's sponsors 00:00:37.07\00:00:39.73 give hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:00:39.77\00:00:42.24 There is something special about a child 00:00:56.99\00:00:59.42 whose life has been transformed. 00:00:59.45\00:01:01.62 They have an extra spring in their step, 00:01:01.66\00:01:03.79 a smile on their face and a song in their heart. 00:01:03.83\00:01:08.03 This is especially true for children 00:01:08.06\00:01:10.40 who have a disability in countries like India 00:01:10.43\00:01:13.10 and have been given the opportunity of education 00:01:13.13\00:01:16.00 and a saving knowledge of Jesus. 00:01:16.04\00:01:18.77 Child Impact International is giving deaf children 00:01:18.81\00:01:21.54 these two very important things. 00:01:21.58\00:01:24.25 The deaf school is located in Kollegal, 00:01:24.28\00:01:27.25 which is sort of a country town 00:01:27.28\00:01:30.35 about a two hour drive south of Bangalore. 00:01:30.39\00:01:34.76 And if you get up early enough, you can get there in two hours, 00:01:34.79\00:01:39.23 but in thick traffic it can be a three hour drive. 00:01:39.26\00:01:42.40 The thing that stood out to me 00:01:45.87\00:01:47.54 at the deaf school was just how happy the kids 00:01:47.57\00:01:50.34 were because they're suddenly 00:01:50.37\00:01:52.47 in a group of children that they can communicate with. 00:01:52.51\00:01:56.31 When they're back in the village 00:01:56.34\00:01:57.85 no one understands them, 00:01:57.88\00:01:59.65 no one understands sign language. 00:01:59.68\00:02:02.15 And when they get to the school, 00:02:02.18\00:02:04.09 suddenly they're not only getting an education, 00:02:04.12\00:02:07.36 but they're learning how to communicate 00:02:07.39\00:02:10.06 and that's such a huge thing 00:02:10.09\00:02:12.09 that we're not really used to 00:02:12.13\00:02:14.46 and then they communicate with each other. 00:02:14.50\00:02:17.23 And just to see them interacting, 00:02:17.27\00:02:19.43 to them being educated 00:02:19.47\00:02:21.47 and to see them playing together, 00:02:21.50\00:02:23.74 really is impressive 00:02:23.77\00:02:25.61 and they're really, really happy. 00:02:25.64\00:02:29.38 The Kollegal School for the speech 00:02:29.41\00:02:31.11 and hearing impaired is located in a rural setting 00:02:31.15\00:02:33.95 in Karnataka, India. 00:02:33.98\00:02:36.02 It has a wonderful campus, with over 100 students. 00:02:36.05\00:02:39.49 But it did not begin on such a grand scale. 00:02:39.52\00:02:43.32 For the starting of our deaf school, 00:02:43.36\00:02:46.16 we came to know that 00:02:46.19\00:02:47.70 there was a school for deaf children 00:02:47.73\00:02:50.67 that was being closed. 00:02:50.70\00:02:52.23 It was being run by another organization. 00:02:52.27\00:02:55.20 And the lady that was working 00:02:55.24\00:02:57.97 with me in the sponsorship program in India, 00:02:58.01\00:03:01.44 her husband was living in the area 00:03:01.48\00:03:04.21 where the school was. 00:03:04.25\00:03:06.55 And so we felt that it was a real tragedy 00:03:06.58\00:03:09.32 to think that these children 00:03:09.35\00:03:10.69 were just being left with, you know, 00:03:10.72\00:03:12.75 with no education possibilities. 00:03:12.79\00:03:16.62 And so for the first year, 00:03:16.66\00:03:19.46 we just rented a building and we had a little auto 00:03:19.49\00:03:25.23 that used to go and pick up the children 00:03:25.27\00:03:28.47 and then we had some of them 00:03:28.50\00:03:29.84 living in that small building also. 00:03:29.87\00:03:34.08 In 2002, after many years of renting, 00:03:34.11\00:03:36.64 a school was constructed for them. 00:03:36.68\00:03:38.88 This school provides food, boarding and an education. 00:03:38.91\00:03:42.75 It is also a beacon of hope to many deaf children 00:03:42.78\00:03:45.85 since it is located in a poor, rural area 00:03:45.89\00:03:48.62 where it's hard to get an education, 00:03:48.66\00:03:50.73 especially if you are deaf. 00:03:50.76\00:03:53.66 The deaf school is managed and owned by the church, 00:03:53.70\00:03:58.40 but Child Impact International 00:03:58.43\00:03:59.77 provides all the sponsorship 00:03:59.80\00:04:02.60 and all the funding for the school. 00:04:02.64\00:04:05.47 And one positive thing about the school is the excellent, 00:04:05.51\00:04:09.34 strong leadership we have in the couple that run it. 00:04:09.38\00:04:13.62 Jacob and Shinet, both understand sign language 00:04:13.65\00:04:17.99 and Jacob gives strong leadership 00:04:18.02\00:04:20.72 as the principal 00:04:20.76\00:04:22.16 and Shinet is involved in all aspects of the school. 00:04:22.19\00:04:25.73 And I just really appreciate the commitment 00:04:25.76\00:04:28.56 that they have to the school, 00:04:28.60\00:04:30.67 along with their staff. 00:04:30.70\00:04:35.04 This school established in this place 00:04:35.07\00:04:37.84 has been really a blessing to many. 00:04:37.87\00:04:41.38 In that regards I would like to say that 00:04:41.41\00:04:43.71 there're many children here 00:04:43.75\00:04:45.41 who are from very poor background 00:04:45.45\00:04:47.72 and if it is not for this school 00:04:47.75\00:04:49.92 they would have been back at home 00:04:49.95\00:04:51.29 doing some odd jobs. 00:04:51.32\00:04:53.19 This school has become a blessing for many children 00:04:53.22\00:04:57.03 and for the parents 00:04:57.06\00:04:58.66 because they are here having a good education, 00:04:58.69\00:05:01.96 having good shelter 00:05:02.00\00:05:03.60 and above all they are forming a good character, 00:05:03.63\00:05:08.14 to be kind, to be sharing. 00:05:08.17\00:05:10.27 And they feel like a family here 00:05:10.31\00:05:11.94 because all the children are here of the same kind, 00:05:11.97\00:05:15.81 so they are like brotherly, sisterly kind here. 00:05:15.84\00:05:19.08 And there're many other children 00:05:19.11\00:05:21.25 who have finished their studies 00:05:21.28\00:05:23.59 and they're standing on their own feet 00:05:23.62\00:05:25.42 and they are a good example for these children. 00:05:25.45\00:05:27.72 They look up to them and they have dreams, 00:05:27.76\00:05:30.89 and they have hope that 00:05:30.93\00:05:32.53 their dreams will be fulfilled one day. 00:05:32.56\00:05:35.93 Without this school for the deaf, 00:05:35.96\00:05:37.63 there would be very little hope for these children. 00:05:37.67\00:05:41.30 Those who are deaf are treated very poorly 00:05:41.34\00:05:43.74 because deafness is considered a curse. 00:05:43.77\00:05:46.17 Some families will try to hide the fact 00:05:46.21\00:05:48.48 that their child is deaf. 00:05:48.51\00:05:49.98 Sometimes fathers will leave their families 00:05:50.01\00:05:52.15 because they don't want the shame of being 00:05:52.18\00:05:54.22 the father to a deaf child. 00:05:54.25\00:05:56.99 Advith mother came here 00:05:57.02\00:06:00.06 with a hopeful heart, 00:06:00.09\00:06:04.03 but when we started talking to the mother, 00:06:04.06\00:06:06.59 we realized that Advith was born deaf 00:06:06.63\00:06:09.63 and soon as the father 00:06:09.66\00:06:11.07 has come to know that the boy has born deaf, 00:06:11.10\00:06:13.84 the father did not want to stay with the mother 00:06:13.87\00:06:15.97 because they consider this as a curse upon them. 00:06:16.00\00:06:19.41 So the father was insisting the mother 00:06:19.44\00:06:21.68 to leave the boy in an orphan 00:06:21.71\00:06:23.35 or leave him and then come. 00:06:23.38\00:06:25.78 But the mother having so much of love for the son, 00:06:25.81\00:06:29.65 she could not do 00:06:29.68\00:06:31.02 what the husband asked her to do, 00:06:31.05\00:06:32.99 rather she decided in her heart 00:06:33.02\00:06:35.16 that she will stay with the son, 00:06:35.19\00:06:36.69 give him a bright future, 00:06:36.73\00:06:38.96 so she parted ways from her husband. 00:06:38.99\00:06:42.06 She stays alone now to support Advith 00:06:42.10\00:06:46.67 and in a community like where she stays, 00:06:46.70\00:06:49.60 it's very hard to survive alone. 00:06:49.64\00:06:51.61 She can be misused by other men. 00:06:51.64\00:06:54.94 She can face a lot of difficulties. 00:06:54.98\00:06:57.61 To go and get a job itself is very hard for her 00:06:57.65\00:07:00.65 and she's very smart, she has masters, 00:07:00.68\00:07:03.79 she has done her college, 00:07:03.82\00:07:05.89 but now to go and find a job 00:07:05.92\00:07:08.39 and she has to go to the court 00:07:08.42\00:07:11.29 as well as to attend the case, 00:07:11.33\00:07:13.19 so people are not so happy 00:07:13.23\00:07:14.80 to give her leave on a working day. 00:07:14.83\00:07:18.13 She's finding it so hard, 00:07:18.17\00:07:20.90 but this school has given her a hope 00:07:20.94\00:07:23.34 to give education for Advith. 00:07:23.37\00:07:26.11 So with so much of difficulties, 00:07:26.14\00:07:28.01 she still puts a cheerful face 00:07:28.04\00:07:30.35 so that her boy in turn can be happy. 00:07:30.38\00:07:34.18 It is hard to imagine the difficult situation 00:07:34.22\00:07:36.32 that Advith's mother was in. 00:07:36.35\00:07:38.39 In India, there aren't any special programs 00:07:38.42\00:07:40.72 to help single mothers. 00:07:40.76\00:07:42.69 That situation alone is very difficult, 00:07:42.72\00:07:45.56 but adding in a disabled child 00:07:45.59\00:07:47.46 makes the situation almost impossible. 00:07:47.50\00:07:51.50 Thankfully, Advith's mother had the opportunity 00:07:51.53\00:07:54.57 to enroll him into Child Impact's school 00:07:54.60\00:07:57.01 for the deaf, 00:07:57.04\00:07:58.37 where he settled in to his new environment quickly. 00:07:58.41\00:08:02.84 After the mother left Advith in the hostel 00:08:02.88\00:08:06.45 and when she left, me and Jacob 00:08:06.48\00:08:08.98 we're looking at the boy is so small, 00:08:09.02\00:08:11.95 just three and a half years old. 00:08:11.99\00:08:13.92 And we were, like, wondering, 00:08:13.96\00:08:15.32 how this boy is going to stay here. 00:08:15.36\00:08:17.53 He's so small, will he be able to stay away from his mother? 00:08:17.56\00:08:21.56 Will he be able to cope with the other children? 00:08:21.60\00:08:24.00 But he surprised us. 00:08:24.03\00:08:25.93 He did not cry. 00:08:25.97\00:08:28.60 The way he conducted himself, 00:08:28.64\00:08:30.77 it's like he understood the difficulties of his mother 00:08:30.81\00:08:34.11 and he was ready to cope up with the other children. 00:08:34.14\00:08:36.98 He was happy, he was smiling, 00:08:37.01\00:08:38.71 he did not cry, he ate his food, 00:08:38.75\00:08:41.15 he went to his bed and morning he was awake. 00:08:41.18\00:08:44.15 He was perfectly fine with the other children. 00:08:44.19\00:08:48.92 Advith's story is just one out of hundreds of children 00:08:48.96\00:08:52.26 who have had their lives dramatically changed 00:08:52.29\00:08:54.56 for the better because of this school. 00:08:54.60\00:08:57.47 They not only receive an education 00:08:57.50\00:08:59.30 and valuable life skills, but also room and board. 00:08:59.33\00:09:03.34 Even though the school provides 00:09:03.37\00:09:04.71 these children with many opportunities, 00:09:04.74\00:09:06.41 the greatest opportunity of all is a saving relationship 00:09:06.44\00:09:09.94 with Jesus Christ. 00:09:09.98\00:09:11.55 You know, we have children, 99 percentage of Hindu children 00:09:11.58\00:09:17.55 and the remaining one is the Muslim kids. 00:09:17.59\00:09:20.86 We have only two Muslim children 00:09:20.89\00:09:22.79 and they are here. 00:09:22.82\00:09:24.16 When they come, they know nothing about Jesus, 00:09:24.19\00:09:26.73 they know nothing about Bible, 00:09:26.76\00:09:29.66 but after they come here, they learn so many things. 00:09:29.70\00:09:33.47 They have morning worship, they have evening worship, 00:09:33.50\00:09:36.14 they have song service, they learn many songs, 00:09:36.17\00:09:38.91 they take up the prayer, 00:09:38.94\00:09:40.48 sometimes they volunteer themselves, saying, like, 00:09:40.51\00:09:42.68 we want to tell a story. 00:09:42.71\00:09:44.45 And, of course, we have Sabbath services 00:09:44.48\00:09:46.48 where they learn many more about Bible 00:09:46.51\00:09:49.58 and now I can say some of the older children, 00:09:49.62\00:09:53.46 they know more Bible stories and they believe in Jesus. 00:09:53.49\00:09:57.56 Their belief is more than we. 00:09:57.59\00:09:59.79 Sometime we tend to fail somewhere 00:09:59.83\00:10:02.13 when we get temptations or when we get trouble, 00:10:02.16\00:10:05.13 we sometime go low and then get 00:10:05.17\00:10:07.54 our faith back and then stand. 00:10:07.57\00:10:09.44 But these children, 00:10:09.47\00:10:11.04 they put their trust completely on Jesus. 00:10:11.07\00:10:14.48 You should see their prayer, 00:10:14.51\00:10:15.84 you should really see their prayer. 00:10:15.88\00:10:17.21 When they pray, it's a sincere, honest prayer, 00:10:17.25\00:10:20.28 and we have seen answers for their prayer, 00:10:20.32\00:10:25.55 it's incredible. 00:10:25.59\00:10:28.16 It's amazing to see just a tiny amount of the work 00:10:28.19\00:10:31.46 that Child Impact's school 00:10:31.49\00:10:32.96 for the deaf has done and is doing. 00:10:32.99\00:10:35.33 They have given bright futures to hundreds of children 00:10:35.36\00:10:38.27 who otherwise would not have been 00:10:38.30\00:10:39.90 able to receive an education and live a meaningful life. 00:10:39.93\00:10:43.61 To me, it's just wonderful to be 00:10:43.64\00:10:45.37 able to do something for children 00:10:45.41\00:10:47.51 like the blind and the deaf. 00:10:47.54\00:10:49.88 To give them an opportunity to do something special 00:10:49.91\00:10:54.65 with their lives for God 00:10:54.68\00:10:56.79 and an opportunity that, you know, 00:10:56.82\00:11:00.09 coming from the villages and that that 00:11:00.12\00:11:01.79 they definitely would never have had without the fact that 00:11:01.82\00:11:05.99 our schools have been built 00:11:06.03\00:11:08.60 and sponsorship provided 00:11:08.63\00:11:10.43 so that the children can attend. 00:11:10.47\00:11:13.10 Without the generous support of sponsors like you, 00:11:13.13\00:11:15.97 none of this would be possible. 00:11:16.00\00:11:18.47 These children would have no hope for the future, 00:11:18.51\00:11:21.08 but you have given them hope. 00:11:21.11\00:11:23.31 Thank you for your support. 00:11:23.35\00:11:24.95 At the deaf school, 00:11:52.37\00:11:53.71 Child Impact has some great plans. 00:11:53.74\00:11:56.78 the staff of the deaf school 00:12:55.80\00:12:57.54 and the spiritual input that they give to these children. 00:12:57.57\00:13:01.04 Child Impact International is very excited that
