Child Impact International 00:00:01.93\00:00:03.57 is an organization that gives hope 00:00:03.60\00:00:05.67 and fosters permanent, 00:00:05.70\00:00:07.10 positive change in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:07.14\00:00:10.21 and their communities. 00:00:10.24\00:00:12.81 Countries include Zambia, Kenya, 00:00:12.84\00:00:16.98 India, Nepal, 00:00:17.01\00:00:18.71 Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. 00:00:18.75\00:00:22.25 Child Impact's investment in the lives of more than 00:00:22.28\00:00:24.65 3,500 children continues to yield infinite returns. 00:00:24.69\00:00:29.32 Outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:29.36\00:00:31.76 to providing an education 00:00:31.79\00:00:33.16 and a home for deaf and blind children 00:00:33.19\00:00:35.56 and orphans. 00:00:35.60\00:00:36.93 Above all, Child Impact's sponsors 00:00:36.97\00:00:39.57 give hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:00:39.60\00:00:42.17 Life in India is very difficult 00:01:03.73\00:01:05.79 for those in rural regions. 00:01:05.83\00:01:08.16 Things that we take for granted like education and medical care 00:01:08.20\00:01:12.10 are a luxury beyond their reach. 00:01:12.13\00:01:15.34 This is especially true for children with disabilities. 00:01:15.37\00:01:19.64 A child who is born blind 00:01:19.67\00:01:21.48 or becomes blind from an accident 00:01:21.51\00:01:23.45 or disease has little hope for a positive future. 00:01:23.48\00:01:28.18 To be brought up blind in the village by a family 00:01:28.22\00:01:31.79 who has to work nine or ten hours a day means that 00:01:31.82\00:01:35.46 the child is left on their own 00:01:35.49\00:01:38.03 often in the house on their own, 00:01:38.06\00:01:40.33 because they're scared to venture out 00:01:40.36\00:01:42.86 because they simply don't know 00:01:42.90\00:01:44.33 where they are or what they're doing. 00:01:44.37\00:01:46.60 We've even found children 00:01:46.63\00:01:48.57 who are chained or tied inside the house. 00:01:48.60\00:01:52.07 Not because the parents don't like them or not 00:01:52.11\00:01:55.01 because there's an issue. 00:01:55.04\00:01:56.54 It's just that the parents don't want them wandering off 00:01:56.58\00:01:59.78 and getting into danger or tripping or falling. 00:01:59.81\00:02:04.32 Child Impact International saw the need 00:02:04.35\00:02:06.55 that these children had and opened a school designed 00:02:06.59\00:02:09.62 to help them reach their full potential. 00:02:09.66\00:02:12.53 On my first trip to India, one of the first places 00:02:12.56\00:02:15.63 I visited was the blind school 00:02:15.66\00:02:18.07 and it's located in rural India at a town called Bobbili. 00:02:18.10\00:02:22.40 And it's out in the countryside. 00:02:22.44\00:02:25.17 The school gives hope to blind children 00:02:25.21\00:02:28.18 who normally struggle in the villages. 00:02:28.21\00:02:33.15 The school for the blind in Bobbili 00:02:33.18\00:02:35.05 did not start out as a large school. 00:02:35.08\00:02:37.62 It started as most great things do. 00:02:37.65\00:02:40.19 And that is by a few good people 00:02:40.22\00:02:42.39 doing what they can to help where they can. 00:02:42.42\00:02:45.39 The Adventist Church 00:02:45.43\00:02:46.93 had been a few spots 00:02:46.96\00:02:51.77 given some teachers, 00:02:51.80\00:02:53.44 some training about how to teach the blind. 00:02:53.47\00:02:58.14 There was just maybe four or five 00:02:58.17\00:02:59.91 in different schools. 00:02:59.94\00:03:01.84 And then somehow we actually started 00:03:01.88\00:03:07.15 with the idea 00:03:07.18\00:03:08.52 in the Flaiz Memorial School at Narsapur. 00:03:08.55\00:03:12.45 There was Gloria, 00:03:12.49\00:03:14.36 a lady who was teaching there 00:03:14.39\00:03:16.66 and she was very interested in the blind. 00:03:16.69\00:03:19.76 And so, we decided that 00:03:19.79\00:03:23.53 we would start a blind program. 00:03:23.57\00:03:26.67 And that also started in Bobbili 00:03:26.70\00:03:28.80 the same as our Sunrise Orphanage. 00:03:28.84\00:03:33.21 And the first year, 00:03:33.24\00:03:36.95 I can't remember how many children we had, 00:03:36.98\00:03:39.25 but in the first year 00:03:39.28\00:03:40.62 we had the children living in a building 00:03:40.65\00:03:44.29 just behind 00:03:44.32\00:03:46.12 the Bobbili Seventh-day Adventist day school. 00:03:46.15\00:03:49.79 And so, the children were living there 00:03:49.82\00:03:51.56 and then just coming, you know, to, 00:03:51.59\00:03:54.06 into the classroom area to go to school. 00:03:54.10\00:03:58.73 And then I think maybe we only had it 00:03:58.77\00:04:02.57 like that for about a year. 00:04:02.60\00:04:04.57 And then after that, 00:04:04.61\00:04:05.94 we had them in another building 00:04:05.97\00:04:10.31 also in Bobbili. 00:04:10.35\00:04:12.41 The school was growing slowly, 00:04:12.45\00:04:14.05 but surely, then the arrival 00:04:14.08\00:04:16.38 of a special guest changed everything. 00:04:16.42\00:04:19.62 Garwin McNeilus was actually coming to India for a visit. 00:04:19.65\00:04:23.73 And I thought, wouldn't it be nice 00:04:23.76\00:04:25.09 if he could just hear our blind children sing. 00:04:25.13\00:04:27.96 That was the only thing I actually had in my mind. 00:04:28.00\00:04:31.23 And so we took the blind children down. 00:04:31.27\00:04:33.54 I think at that time there was probably only about, 00:04:33.57\00:04:36.94 I'm not sure whether it was 10 or 20. 00:04:36.97\00:04:39.14 So we took some down to the Ibrahimpatnam School 00:04:39.17\00:04:41.91 because Garwin was visiting that area 00:04:41.94\00:04:44.98 and they sang and, you know, 00:04:45.01\00:04:48.25 he spoke to them and it's a real blessing 00:04:48.28\00:04:50.89 because the Adventist school system in India 00:04:50.92\00:04:54.62 has always been English medium. 00:04:54.66\00:04:56.69 So, you know, you are able to communicate with the children. 00:04:56.73\00:05:01.30 And so, that was a really nice program 00:05:01.33\00:05:04.47 as the children put on there. 00:05:04.50\00:05:06.77 And it was after that that Garwin decided that 00:05:06.80\00:05:10.84 he would build a school for our blind children, 00:05:10.87\00:05:13.41 which is what is there now, 00:05:13.44\00:05:15.54 and which has blessed so many children 00:05:15.58\00:05:18.51 through the years since we started. 00:05:18.55\00:05:22.35 One of these children 00:05:22.38\00:05:23.72 that has been blessed is Shankar 00:05:23.75\00:05:25.55 who lost his eyesight at an early age. 00:05:25.59\00:05:28.66 When I was born, I born like a sighted person. 00:05:28.69\00:05:33.36 When I have three years 00:05:33.40\00:05:35.46 that time I lose my eyes because of eye cancer. 00:05:35.50\00:05:39.23 That time I went to hospital doctors told that 00:05:39.27\00:05:42.44 you got eye cancer, we have to take one eye, 00:05:42.47\00:05:45.21 then there's another way it'll not going to attack. 00:05:45.24\00:05:50.91 That time they took one of my, 00:05:50.95\00:05:53.25 after two years passed again it connected to other eye. 00:05:53.28\00:05:58.49 Again, they took another eye also. 00:05:58.52\00:06:00.76 Due to the case of cancer I lose two eyes. 00:06:00.79\00:06:04.16 When I lose one eye that time I didn't felt any bad 00:06:04.19\00:06:07.73 because I don't know that time I'm a small boy. 00:06:07.76\00:06:10.20 When they took my second eye, that time I felt so bad 00:06:10.23\00:06:13.47 because I know some knowledge at that time. 00:06:13.50\00:06:18.24 I felt so much of bad 00:06:18.27\00:06:20.01 and I was unable to express my badness view. 00:06:20.04\00:06:25.21 It's hard to imagine what Shankar went through 00:06:25.25\00:06:27.62 losing first one eye 00:06:27.65\00:06:29.05 and then another, several years later. 00:06:29.08\00:06:31.75 The realization that any hope that 00:06:31.79\00:06:33.49 you have for the future is now gone, 00:06:33.52\00:06:36.29 but things changed 00:06:36.32\00:06:37.66 when he arrived at the blind school. 00:06:37.69\00:06:39.33 When I lose my eyes from that time 00:06:39.36\00:06:42.10 I am doing like a sighted person only. 00:06:42.13\00:06:45.50 I am not feeling bad 00:06:45.53\00:06:46.87 because when I came to this school, 00:06:46.90\00:06:49.20 they taught me everything. 00:06:49.24\00:06:51.07 And they taught me studies 00:06:51.11\00:06:54.08 and how to pray and how to be in religion 00:06:54.11\00:06:59.68 and how to stay in all the people. 00:06:59.71\00:07:03.12 They taught me so many things, 00:07:03.15\00:07:04.52 they thought us Bible scriptures. 00:07:04.55\00:07:07.32 And they thought us about Jesus Christ. 00:07:07.36\00:07:11.49 Education for this world and the next 00:07:11.53\00:07:13.93 is so vital to every young person, 00:07:13.96\00:07:16.83 but it was not always an easy academic road for him. 00:07:16.87\00:07:20.00 Shankar is a very good child. 00:07:20.04\00:07:22.67 When I was teaching him maths in sixth standard. 00:07:22.70\00:07:26.31 The child feared for maths. 00:07:26.34\00:07:29.34 He said, "Sir, I feared for maths." 00:07:29.38\00:07:32.01 And when we had given him the very good topic 00:07:32.05\00:07:34.58 and good inspiration of how to learn maths, 00:07:34.62\00:07:37.82 math is a very simple learning 00:07:37.85\00:07:40.56 and very good attempt to learning 00:07:40.59\00:07:43.66 where it can be useful in life. 00:07:43.69\00:07:45.79 And the child had got good inspiration. 00:07:45.83\00:07:48.43 Now at present, 00:07:48.46\00:07:49.83 the child has come to 10th standard 00:07:49.86\00:07:52.43 and he is inspired to learn maths very well. 00:07:52.47\00:07:55.50 And he's a very first ranking child now. 00:07:55.54\00:07:59.07 And the child is very attentive in learning really 00:07:59.11\00:08:03.48 and his studies and is doing 00:08:03.51\00:08:05.81 very excellent work in learning. 00:08:05.85\00:08:10.42 The great help that Shankar has received in the classroom 00:08:10.45\00:08:13.05 has inspired him and guided him to know 00:08:13.09\00:08:15.62 what job he wants to have. 00:08:15.66\00:08:18.39 Oh, when I'll become a teacher so that I can feed my parents 00:08:18.43\00:08:24.00 or I can help them when they are in old age. 00:08:24.03\00:08:28.57 It is inspiring to see how great aspirations like his 00:08:28.60\00:08:31.91 are possible through the specialized education 00:08:31.94\00:08:34.78 that the blind school provides. 00:08:34.81\00:08:37.45 He is being empowered to live the live that he wants to live. 00:08:37.48\00:08:42.78 I've seen the change in the children's lives. 00:08:42.82\00:08:46.02 I saw a girl that came in that 00:08:46.05\00:08:48.22 had been chained in the basement 00:08:48.26\00:08:49.92 of her house for many years. 00:08:49.96\00:08:52.49 And when she first arrived at the school, 00:08:52.53\00:08:54.46 she wouldn't talk to anyone. 00:08:54.50\00:08:56.33 She wouldn't interact with anyone. 00:08:56.36\00:08:58.43 And she sat in the corner. 00:08:58.47\00:09:01.00 When I came back three weeks later, 00:09:01.04\00:09:03.44 it was just so exciting 00:09:03.47\00:09:05.04 and just about brought me to tears, 00:09:05.07\00:09:07.38 to see her singing a song, 00:09:07.41\00:09:10.25 to see her playing with other children. 00:09:10.28\00:09:13.21 And I not only realized 00:09:13.25\00:09:14.65 does it give an education to the children, 00:09:14.68\00:09:17.29 but it gives hope to the children. 00:09:17.32\00:09:19.65 And it also gives hope to the parents. 00:09:19.69\00:09:23.99 By helping their students scholastically 00:09:24.03\00:09:26.23 is not the only thing that the blind school does. 00:09:26.26\00:09:29.40 They also help their students to understand that 00:09:29.43\00:09:31.50 they can have a joyful, fulfilling life. 00:09:31.53\00:09:34.24 And it's transformative when you come here. 00:09:34.27\00:09:36.67 It's such a wonderful thing to see these children. 00:09:36.71\00:09:40.44 And if you spend time with them over the years, 00:09:40.48\00:09:42.71 grow and understand that they too can experience life. 00:09:42.74\00:09:46.61 Their smiles, their vision on life, 00:09:46.65\00:09:49.25 their ability to play musical instruments, 00:09:49.28\00:09:52.49 enjoy life, play cricket. 00:09:52.52\00:09:55.29 It's just a different opportunities 00:09:55.32\00:09:58.06 that you give these children, you know, access to. 00:09:58.09\00:10:00.60 I was privileged to be present when Jaime Jorge, 00:10:10.27\00:10:13.11 the violinist from the USA 00:10:13.14\00:10:15.68 visited the blind school, 00:10:15.71\00:10:17.65 and you should have seen them 00:10:17.68\00:10:19.01 when he started playing the violin. 00:10:19.05\00:10:21.82 They really didn't understand what a violin was. 00:10:21.85\00:10:24.72 They wanted to touch it and feel it. 00:10:24.75\00:10:26.99 But when Jaime started playing, they were just so excited 00:10:27.02\00:10:31.13 because they really loved music and they loved singing. 00:10:31.16\00:10:34.56 And they quickly related to the Christian tunes 00:10:34.60\00:10:37.80 that he was playing. 00:10:37.83\00:10:41.87 Even though they are not able to see, 00:10:41.90\00:10:44.04 there is still so much life that they can experience. 00:10:44.07\00:10:47.31 They can have dreams that are possible. 00:10:47.34\00:10:49.81 And it is that hope that shines through their smiling faces. 00:10:49.84\00:10:53.21 As sponsors, you can know that it is your sacrificial giving 00:10:57.25\00:11:01.89 that has put that joy in their hearts. 00:11:01.92\00:11:04.06 Child Impact is very, very committed 00:11:15.54\00:11:18.17 to the blind school. 00:11:18.21\00:11:19.84 Even though we face many challenges 00:11:19.87\00:11:22.14 like getting qualified teachers to go to the location, 00:11:22.18\00:11:26.45 we are very committed 00:11:26.48\00:11:27.88 to improving the quality of education, 00:11:27.92\00:11:30.82 to improving the quality of long term education, 00:11:30.85\00:11:36.12 so that these children have a chance for a future 00:11:36.16\00:11:39.76 and are able to get a job. 00:11:39.79\00:11:41.36 The Child Impact School for the blind in India 00:11:59.38\00:12:02.22 is a key project for Child Impact International. 00:12:02.25\00:12:05.69 Being born blind or partially sighted 00:12:05.72\00:12:07.66 and coming from a poor rural village 00:12:07.69\00:12:09.29 can be a real challenge. 00:12:09.32\00:12:11.06 Parents don't know how to handle the child 00:12:11.09\00:12:13.03 and sometimes will chain or even tie them up 00:12:13.06\00:12:15.40 as they're worried that 00:12:15.43\00:12:16.77 they may wander off and hurt themselves. 00:12:16.80\00:12:19.50 Often they're embarrassed or shamed in the community. 00:12:19.53\00:12:21.64 And they're hesitant to let their child 00:12:21.67\00:12:23.67 go to a boarding school. 00:12:23.71\00:12:25.61 But when they see the change in the child 00:12:25.64\00:12:27.61 they transition from being embarrassed
