Child Impact International 00:00:02.50\00:00:03.97 is an organization that gives hope 00:00:04.00\00:00:06.03 and fosters permanent, positive change 00:00:06.07\00:00:08.47 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:08.50\00:00:10.57 and their communities. 00:00:10.61\00:00:13.27 Countries include Zambia, Kenya, 00:00:13.31\00:00:17.45 India, Nepal, 00:00:17.48\00:00:19.01 Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. 00:00:19.05\00:00:22.58 Child Impact's investment 00:00:22.62\00:00:23.95 in the lives of more than 3500 children 00:00:23.99\00:00:26.92 continues to yield infinite returns. 00:00:26.96\00:00:29.79 Outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:29.82\00:00:32.16 to providing an education and a home 00:00:32.19\00:00:34.30 for deaf and blind children and orphans. 00:00:34.33\00:00:37.33 Above all, Child Impact's sponsors 00:00:37.37\00:00:40.07 give hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:00:40.10\00:00:42.67 Childhood is a time of discovery, 00:01:00.52\00:01:02.86 joy and love. 00:01:02.89\00:01:04.63 Many of our fondest memories happen at this time. 00:01:04.66\00:01:08.13 However, there are those who are not so lucky. 00:01:08.16\00:01:12.00 For some children in India, 00:01:12.03\00:01:13.84 childhood is a time of loneliness, 00:01:13.87\00:01:16.04 misuse, abuse, and worse. 00:01:16.07\00:01:19.57 Being a child means that you are especially vulnerable 00:01:19.61\00:01:22.34 to human trafficking. 00:01:22.38\00:01:24.41 The situation of a traffic child 00:01:24.45\00:01:26.18 is often hopeless. 00:01:26.21\00:01:28.35 This is where an organization 00:01:28.38\00:01:29.75 run by Child Impact International steps in. 00:01:29.78\00:01:33.22 That organization is Operation Child Rescue. 00:01:33.25\00:01:37.56 Operation Child Rescue seeks to rescue children 00:01:37.59\00:01:40.40 that are in some of the most dire situations imaginable. 00:01:40.43\00:01:44.73 From babies abandoned on the streets, 00:01:44.77\00:01:47.14 to slave labor, and prostitution. 00:01:47.17\00:01:49.80 They seek to not only rescue the children 00:01:49.84\00:01:51.94 from these hopeless situations, 00:01:51.97\00:01:54.01 but also give them a loving environment 00:01:54.04\00:01:56.21 and an education 00:01:56.24\00:01:57.58 so that they can have a bright future. 00:01:57.61\00:02:00.25 It all began when Child Impact saw the huge need in India 00:02:00.28\00:02:03.89 for the rescue of girls 00:02:03.92\00:02:05.25 taking into the sex industry. 00:02:05.29\00:02:07.66 They decided that the best way to address the problem 00:02:07.69\00:02:10.43 would be to form a partnership 00:02:10.46\00:02:11.99 with a non government organization 00:02:12.03\00:02:13.73 in Bangalore. 00:02:13.76\00:02:15.13 Operation Child Rescue was formed as a project 00:02:15.16\00:02:18.07 of Child Impact International to assist children 00:02:18.10\00:02:21.00 that are abandoned or trafficked 00:02:21.04\00:02:22.60 with an initial focus on India. 00:02:22.64\00:02:25.74 Child Impact was excited 00:02:25.77\00:02:27.24 that it could help in some small way 00:02:27.28\00:02:29.34 in giving rescued girls hope. 00:02:29.38\00:02:31.91 The work is being carried forward today by Anita, 00:02:31.95\00:02:34.75 who was the director of Operation Child Rescue. 00:02:34.78\00:02:38.29 Hi, I'm Anita Kanaiya 00:02:38.32\00:02:39.65 with Operation Child Rescue here in Bangalore, 00:02:39.69\00:02:42.49 which is a project of Child Impact International. 00:02:42.52\00:02:45.79 Operation Child Rescue works with as the name suggests, 00:02:45.83\00:02:49.63 children and rescuing them from difficult situations. 00:02:49.66\00:02:53.47 Sometimes it could be children 00:02:53.50\00:02:54.84 who are found begging on the streets 00:02:54.87\00:02:56.67 and have been forced to beg. 00:02:56.71\00:02:58.27 Or it could be children 00:02:58.31\00:02:59.64 who are pushed into child labor situations. 00:02:59.67\00:03:02.78 Or it could be young girls 00:03:02.81\00:03:04.48 who have been sold into slavery. 00:03:04.51\00:03:06.28 So we work not just with these children, 00:03:06.31\00:03:09.92 but we also work with the law enforcement, 00:03:09.95\00:03:12.82 local law enforcement agencies to help rescue children 00:03:12.85\00:03:16.62 from these situations of exploitation. 00:03:16.66\00:03:19.19 And then help to find options for rehabilitation for them. 00:03:19.23\00:03:23.63 So whether it is returning them to their families, 00:03:23.67\00:03:26.37 or finding homes for them to be able to stay, 00:03:26.40\00:03:29.40 or to look at options 00:03:29.44\00:03:31.84 for them to be able to continue education. 00:03:31.87\00:03:34.71 While exact numbers are difficult to find. 00:03:34.74\00:03:37.28 Most non-governmental organizations 00:03:37.31\00:03:39.45 that have looked into it have estimated that 00:03:39.48\00:03:41.28 between 20 to 65 million Indians are trafficked. 00:03:41.32\00:03:45.89 This includes men, women, and children. 00:03:45.92\00:03:50.06 While the Indian Government works to end trafficking, 00:03:50.09\00:03:52.49 it is a huge industry. 00:03:52.53\00:03:55.06 Specific numbers for India are hard to find. 00:03:55.10\00:03:57.67 The International Labor Organization estimates that 00:03:57.70\00:04:00.24 human trafficking is a $150 billion business 00:04:00.27\00:04:04.01 worldwide. 00:04:04.04\00:04:06.44 Even though that number is large, 00:04:06.47\00:04:07.91 the amount of human suffering 00:04:07.94\00:04:09.31 that is caused by that industry is even bigger. 00:04:09.34\00:04:12.81 Even though the problem seems insurmountable, 00:04:12.85\00:04:15.25 Operation Child Rescue is doing a great work 00:04:15.28\00:04:18.05 to save children and change lives. 00:04:18.09\00:04:21.36 It all begins with the rescue. 00:04:21.39\00:04:23.56 So if you're rescuing, say a girl 00:04:23.59\00:04:27.10 who has been sold into slavery, it's very different. 00:04:27.13\00:04:31.43 Because here we have to also look at the, 00:04:31.47\00:04:34.80 you know, the privacy of the individual, 00:04:34.84\00:04:38.11 make sure that they are safe 00:04:38.14\00:04:39.81 and protected and separated from, 00:04:39.84\00:04:42.11 say, the trafficker or from the brothel keepers. 00:04:42.14\00:04:45.48 We also have to collect evidence 00:04:45.51\00:04:47.08 which is again very, very sensitive 00:04:47.12\00:04:49.82 and assist the police 00:04:49.85\00:04:51.19 or the law enforcement with this. 00:04:51.22\00:04:53.52 So there's a huge planning element that goes in. 00:04:53.56\00:04:56.52 The team sits down we make plans. 00:04:56.56\00:04:58.43 We have Plan A, 00:04:58.46\00:04:59.79 if anything goes wrong, then we have Plan B. 00:04:59.83\00:05:02.76 We also have escape routes for every single person. 00:05:02.80\00:05:05.50 We have code names that we use. 00:05:05.53\00:05:07.54 We have the currency that we photocopy 00:05:07.57\00:05:10.21 and keep as evidence beforehand, especially if it's, 00:05:10.24\00:05:14.21 you know, we're rescuing 00:05:14.24\00:05:15.58 from a sexual exploitation situation. 00:05:15.61\00:05:18.28 We have clothing that we specifically wear 00:05:18.31\00:05:22.15 when we go on these rescue operations 00:05:22.18\00:05:24.05 to make sure that nobody grabs a piece of our clothing, 00:05:24.09\00:05:27.62 or especially footwear that we can escape 00:05:27.66\00:05:30.53 easily from there. 00:05:30.56\00:05:32.09 We have disguises and cover ups that we use as well, 00:05:32.13\00:05:35.46 to make sure that people do not recognize us. 00:05:35.50\00:05:37.70 So there's a huge element into the investigation. 00:05:37.73\00:05:41.80 But there's a huge element into the planning as well 00:05:41.84\00:05:44.11 of every rescue operation. 00:05:44.14\00:05:46.81 It can be hard to see how any parent 00:05:46.84\00:05:48.81 would let their child be trafficked. 00:05:48.84\00:05:50.58 Unfortunately, traffickers often use 00:05:50.61\00:05:52.91 the parent's best intentions 00:05:52.95\00:05:54.68 for their children against them. 00:05:54.72\00:05:56.48 I've just had a report from India 00:05:56.52\00:05:58.75 that shows you the lengths that traffickers all go to, 00:05:58.79\00:06:02.59 to be able to take girls 00:06:02.62\00:06:04.76 from their homes and villages. 00:06:04.79\00:06:07.56 This was just a small village. 00:06:07.60\00:06:09.70 And one day a well dressed man came to the village. 00:06:09.73\00:06:13.67 And he said that he was originally from the town, 00:06:13.70\00:06:16.71 and he wanted to give a scholarship 00:06:16.74\00:06:19.44 to three or four young girls in the village. 00:06:19.47\00:06:22.84 The villagers were very excited 00:06:22.88\00:06:25.05 and the fact that their daughters 00:06:25.08\00:06:26.98 were going to have an education. 00:06:27.02\00:06:29.52 And sure enough, three months, two months later, 00:06:29.55\00:06:32.99 their uniforms arrived in a box, 00:06:33.02\00:06:35.89 beautiful uniforms, ready to go to school. 00:06:35.92\00:06:39.63 And then one day, the bus arrived, 00:06:39.66\00:06:42.86 it even had the name on the side of the bus 00:06:42.90\00:06:45.97 of the school, 00:06:46.00\00:06:47.34 they believe they were going to. 00:06:47.37\00:06:49.47 There was a big ceremony 00:06:49.50\00:06:50.97 and they all said goodbye to their girls. 00:06:51.01\00:06:53.41 And they got on their bus and drove away. 00:06:53.44\00:06:57.01 They were never seen again. 00:06:57.05\00:06:58.75 The bus got down the road 20 mile. 00:06:58.78\00:07:01.38 The girls were taken out. 00:07:01.42\00:07:03.05 The uniforms were taken off them. 00:07:03.08\00:07:05.25 And they were thrown into a van and driven clear across India 00:07:05.29\00:07:09.69 to work in the brothels on Bombay. 00:07:09.72\00:07:13.23 This shows you the lengths and depths 00:07:13.26\00:07:15.66 the traffickers all go to deceive the parents. 00:07:15.70\00:07:19.53 Often we wonder, 00:07:19.57\00:07:20.90 "Why would a parent let their child go?" 00:07:20.94\00:07:23.47 But they're normally deceived 00:07:23.51\00:07:24.97 that the child will be better off 00:07:25.01\00:07:27.11 and sometimes they're paid with something. 00:07:27.14\00:07:29.94 Operation Child Rescue just plays a small key role 00:07:29.98\00:07:34.38 in helping rescue these children. 00:07:34.42\00:07:37.39 While the need is great, 00:07:37.42\00:07:38.82 that does not diminish the importance of each life 00:07:38.85\00:07:41.62 that is saved. 00:07:41.66\00:07:43.56 Because while one person saved does not change the world, 00:07:43.59\00:07:46.90 it does change the world for that person. 00:07:46.93\00:07:50.17 Operation Child Rescue not only saves children, 00:07:50.20\00:07:53.34 but also helps each child on an individual basis 00:07:53.37\00:07:56.84 depending on their need. 00:07:56.87\00:07:58.61 When these children are rescued, 00:07:58.64\00:08:00.68 most often these are very young children 00:08:00.71\00:08:03.45 below the age of 18, 00:08:03.48\00:08:05.21 many times below the age of 15. 00:08:05.25\00:08:07.58 And what happens with these children is, 00:08:07.62\00:08:10.29 first we have to ascertain 00:08:10.32\00:08:11.65 whether they need short term care 00:08:11.69\00:08:13.69 and there are homes, short term stay homes, 00:08:13.72\00:08:16.83 or we look into how we can find out 00:08:16.86\00:08:19.06 about where their homes are and where their parents are, 00:08:19.09\00:08:21.83 obviously they've been separated, 00:08:21.86\00:08:23.47 or sometimes they've been sold. 00:08:23.50\00:08:25.57 So these are short term. 00:08:25.60\00:08:26.94 But we also need long term care for children 00:08:26.97\00:08:28.80 who have been abandoned, 00:08:28.84\00:08:30.51 or who have been sold from a different place 00:08:30.54\00:08:33.21 and cannot recollect anything 00:08:33.24\00:08:34.74 about their homes or their families. 00:08:34.78\00:08:37.21 So these children need long term rehab. 00:08:37.25\00:08:39.81 And we ended up putting them 00:08:39.85\00:08:41.18 into some long term rehab options, 00:08:41.22\00:08:43.79 like the government run shelters 00:08:43.82\00:08:45.65 or we have private shelters. 00:08:45.69\00:08:47.66 A caring environment 00:08:47.69\00:08:49.02 for these young women is crucial. 00:08:49.06\00:08:50.73 But in most cases, it is only part of the process 00:08:50.76\00:08:53.56 in gaining their lives back. 00:08:53.60\00:08:56.10 Many of them have had their childhood taken from them 00:08:56.13\00:08:58.83 in horrific ways. 00:08:58.87\00:09:00.34 And it takes time to rebuild. 00:09:00.37\00:09:03.10 That is why Operation Child Rescue 00:09:03.14\00:09:05.27 has a place called the Azadi Home. 00:09:05.31\00:09:08.78 The Azadi Home is vital for children like Nazrim. 00:09:08.81\00:09:12.08 You know, Nazrim's story is that 00:09:12.11\00:09:16.18 she doesn't recollect much. 00:09:16.22\00:09:18.12 But she was actually kidnapped as a baby 00:09:18.15\00:09:21.62 and then sold to somebody in UP, Uttar Pradesh. 00:09:21.66\00:09:26.29 And then from there, she was brought to Bangalore 00:09:26.33\00:09:28.36 with somebody else, another child. 00:09:28.40\00:09:30.87 I mean, she must have been all of eight and nine 00:09:30.90\00:09:33.20 when this was happening. 00:09:33.23\00:09:34.60 And then she was sold to a couple 00:09:34.64\00:09:36.50 who are actually running a brothel. 00:09:36.54\00:09:38.47 So she hadn't seen any life 00:09:38.51\00:09:42.64 apart from exploitation and abuse. 00:09:42.68\00:09:46.11 So for her to be free here, to be able to eat good food, 00:09:46.15\00:09:49.88 she appreciates the smallest things in life 00:09:49.92\00:09:52.69 that most of us would take for granted. 00:09:52.72\00:09:55.02 So every time there's some special meal, 00:09:55.06\00:09:57.49 she'll always say, "Oh, I love the food here." 00:09:57.53\00:10:00.20 Or she, you know, she appreciates the building. 00:10:00.23\00:10:02.86 She appreciates the clothes. 00:10:02.90\00:10:04.83 And now she has a little puppy as well.
