Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:02.46\00:00:05.23 that gives hope and fosters permanent positive change 00:00:05.27\00:00:08.44 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:08.47\00:00:10.64 and their communities. 00:00:10.67\00:00:13.34 Countries include Zambia, Kenya, India, Nepal, 00:00:13.38\00:00:19.21 Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. 00:00:19.25\00:00:22.68 Child Impact's investment in the lives 00:00:22.72\00:00:24.62 of more than 3,500 children 00:00:24.65\00:00:26.79 continues to yield infinite returns. 00:00:26.82\00:00:29.86 Outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:29.89\00:00:32.13 to providing an education 00:00:32.16\00:00:33.70 and a home for deaf and blind children, 00:00:33.73\00:00:36.10 and orphans. 00:00:36.13\00:00:37.47 Above all, Child Impact's sponsors 00:00:37.50\00:00:40.14 give hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:00:40.17\00:00:42.57 India is a country of beauty and extremes. 00:00:58.79\00:01:02.06 It is the second most populous country in the world 00:01:02.09\00:01:04.69 while being the seventh in land area. 00:01:04.73\00:01:08.06 India is the largest democratic country 00:01:08.10\00:01:10.03 by population in the world 00:01:10.07\00:01:11.40 by becoming a Federal Republic in 1950. 00:01:11.43\00:01:15.20 It is a multilingual, 00:01:15.24\00:01:16.64 multiethnic society 00:01:16.67\00:01:18.44 that has grown from 361 million people 00:01:18.47\00:01:21.21 in 1951 to 1.2 billion in 2011. 00:01:21.24\00:01:27.15 The population is not the only thing 00:01:27.18\00:01:28.82 that has grown, 00:01:28.85\00:01:30.19 its economy has greatly expanded 00:01:30.22\00:01:31.69 also to the point where India 00:01:31.72\00:01:33.42 has its own space program 00:01:33.46\00:01:34.92 that has successfully completed 00:01:34.96\00:01:36.32 several extraterrestrial missions. 00:01:36.36\00:01:39.46 In that time its literacy rate 00:01:39.49\00:01:40.96 has also improved going from 16.6% to 74%. 00:01:41.00\00:01:46.94 In spite of these great achievements, 00:01:46.97\00:01:48.84 India still faces many issues. 00:01:48.87\00:01:51.47 Issues like gender inequality, child malnutrition, 00:01:51.51\00:01:54.94 human trafficking, 00:01:54.98\00:01:56.31 and lack of education for the poor. 00:01:56.34\00:01:59.58 Learning of the need, 00:01:59.61\00:02:00.95 Asian Aid began working in India 00:02:00.98\00:02:02.62 in the 1980s under Helen Eager's leadership, 00:02:02.65\00:02:06.05 many successful projects were started. 00:02:06.09\00:02:08.19 They continue to be a blessing to hundreds of children 00:02:08.22\00:02:11.43 through orphanages and schools. 00:02:11.46\00:02:15.16 The organization has grown 00:02:15.20\00:02:16.56 since then to the point where Asian Aid USA has changed 00:02:16.60\00:02:19.67 its name to Child Impact International 00:02:19.70\00:02:21.77 to better reflect its global mission. 00:02:21.80\00:02:25.14 Regardless of the name change, 00:02:25.17\00:02:26.74 India still holds a great deal of Child Impact's focus 00:02:26.78\00:02:30.08 as it is home to many of their projects. 00:02:30.11\00:02:33.58 While this episode is too short to highlight each one, 00:02:33.62\00:02:36.35 we will be looking at the main ways 00:02:36.38\00:02:38.02 that Child Impact has 00:02:38.05\00:02:39.49 and continues to positively change lives in India. 00:02:39.52\00:02:43.73 The first focus is helping 00:02:43.76\00:02:45.16 with the immediate basic needs of the children. 00:02:45.19\00:02:48.50 Sunrise Children's Home provides orphans 00:02:48.53\00:02:50.63 with a homelike environment 00:02:50.67\00:02:52.03 where they have food and loving care. 00:02:52.07\00:02:54.44 Beginning in 2001 with three children, 00:02:54.47\00:02:56.81 it soon grew into the first institution 00:02:56.84\00:02:59.14 that was entirely built and operated by Child Impact. 00:02:59.17\00:03:02.21 Jim Rennie visited Sunrise 00:03:02.24\00:03:03.68 when it was located in a small house. 00:03:03.71\00:03:05.81 Seeing the need, Jim knew that he had to help. 00:03:05.85\00:03:08.78 One of the first places 00:03:08.82\00:03:10.15 I visited was then the Sunrise Home. 00:03:10.19\00:03:13.69 And it was located in a very, very small building. 00:03:13.72\00:03:17.53 And I arrived late at night 00:03:17.56\00:03:19.56 and all the kids were sleeping on the floor, 00:03:19.59\00:03:21.93 shoulder to shoulder. 00:03:21.96\00:03:23.53 And to be honest, that shocked me. 00:03:23.57\00:03:25.77 And then I went back the next day 00:03:25.80\00:03:27.57 and met the children. 00:03:27.60\00:03:29.37 And I was just impressed that we had to do something. 00:03:29.40\00:03:32.57 And I said, "I've got to change this." 00:03:32.61\00:03:35.28 I simply can't walk away and leave these kids 00:03:35.31\00:03:38.41 in the condition that they were in. 00:03:38.45\00:03:41.22 Then the church made it known that 00:03:41.25\00:03:42.95 they had some rural land, 00:03:42.98\00:03:45.25 and I'm just so excited that over a period of five years, 00:03:45.29\00:03:49.39 that Child Impact International 00:03:49.42\00:03:51.86 along with the donors was able to build Sunrise Home. 00:03:51.89\00:03:56.50 It's an amazing facility that is now government licensed. 00:03:56.53\00:04:01.60 While Sunrise Home is fully owned 00:04:01.64\00:04:03.24 and operated by Child Impact, 00:04:03.27\00:04:04.94 they also work with many other orphanages 00:04:04.97\00:04:07.11 like Elim Home and Sunshine. 00:04:07.14\00:04:10.71 It may seem like being alone 00:04:10.75\00:04:12.11 on the streets would be the worst thing 00:04:12.15\00:04:13.65 that a child could face, 00:04:13.68\00:04:15.18 but there is another even greater danger. 00:04:15.22\00:04:18.32 Human trafficking is a threat that 00:04:18.35\00:04:19.89 too many children in India face. 00:04:19.92\00:04:22.66 Jim Rennie became acutely aware of this issue. 00:04:22.69\00:04:25.79 Over the years as I visited India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, 00:04:25.83\00:04:30.37 I became very aware 00:04:30.40\00:04:32.23 of the number of children being trafficked. 00:04:32.27\00:04:36.04 We've even had children disappear 00:04:36.07\00:04:38.21 from our schools that have gone home 00:04:38.24\00:04:40.78 for the holidays 00:04:40.81\00:04:42.14 and simply disappeared from the village, 00:04:42.18\00:04:44.78 they had been trafficked. 00:04:44.81\00:04:46.61 And the problem is huge. 00:04:46.65\00:04:48.65 And I just felt the burden that we had to do something. 00:04:48.68\00:04:52.15 We had to play a small part in helping rescue children 00:04:52.19\00:04:56.79 from the various aspects of trafficking. 00:04:56.83\00:05:00.10 Seeing the huge need, 00:05:00.13\00:05:01.46 Child Impact decided to partner 00:05:01.50\00:05:02.90 with a non-governmental organization 00:05:02.93\00:05:05.10 to begin to right the wrong done to these children. 00:05:05.13\00:05:08.10 That partnership resulted in Operation Child Rescue. 00:05:08.14\00:05:11.41 Operation Child Rescue 00:05:11.44\00:05:12.81 not only rescues young women from prostitution, 00:05:12.84\00:05:15.84 but also children from forced labor in factories 00:05:15.88\00:05:18.81 and abandoned babies. 00:05:18.85\00:05:20.22 Once rescued, Operation Child Rescue 00:05:20.25\00:05:22.42 provides them with a place 00:05:22.45\00:05:23.79 where they can heal 00:05:23.82\00:05:25.15 and grow into their full potential. 00:05:25.19\00:05:27.36 In order for all these children to reach their full potential, 00:05:27.39\00:05:30.13 whether they are from a poor family, 00:05:30.16\00:05:31.93 orphaned or trafficked, 00:05:31.96\00:05:33.70 they need to be equipped for the future. 00:05:33.73\00:05:35.96 This is where Child Impact's main focus comes in, 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.60 and that is education. 00:05:38.63\00:05:40.57 In a developing country, 00:05:40.60\00:05:42.20 it's very hard to break the poverty cycle. 00:05:42.24\00:05:45.07 And one of the key ways of giving a child a chance 00:05:45.11\00:05:48.68 to break that poverty cycle is giving them an education. 00:05:48.71\00:05:52.68 The reality is that they don't have that education. 00:05:52.71\00:05:56.18 They're really locked 00:05:56.22\00:05:57.55 into what's available back in the village 00:05:57.59\00:06:00.19 and the reality, not a lot. 00:06:00.22\00:06:02.39 So the education gives them 00:06:02.42\00:06:03.99 a chance of breaking out 00:06:04.03\00:06:06.13 into a far better career job 00:06:06.16\00:06:10.20 which once again impacts their family, 00:06:10.23\00:06:12.80 because most of them do give money 00:06:12.83\00:06:14.77 back to their family once they get a job. 00:06:14.80\00:06:17.97 Child Impact has made great strides 00:06:18.01\00:06:19.94 in giving children an opportunity at education. 00:06:19.97\00:06:22.88 They currently sponsor over 1,500 students 00:06:22.91\00:06:26.38 in over 50 schools across India. 00:06:26.41\00:06:29.18 While Child Impact is not directly involved 00:06:29.22\00:06:31.59 with all of the schools 00:06:31.62\00:06:32.95 where they sponsor students, 00:06:32.99\00:06:34.32 there is one that 00:06:34.36\00:06:35.69 they had a hand in its creation. 00:06:35.72\00:06:37.29 That school is Immanuel School in Jeypore, India. 00:06:37.33\00:06:40.96 Helen Eager had a dream of building 00:06:41.00\00:06:42.66 a school in the tribal region 00:06:42.70\00:06:44.40 located in the Indian state of Odisha. 00:06:44.43\00:06:46.70 Her dream became a reality 00:06:46.74\00:06:48.07 with the help of Garwin McNeilus 00:06:48.10\00:06:49.80 and his wife Marilee along with Maranatha Volunteers 00:06:49.84\00:06:53.17 and financial support from donors. 00:06:53.21\00:06:55.18 The school opened in 2006 00:06:55.21\00:06:57.05 with a capacity for 700 students 00:06:57.08\00:06:59.58 and offers an amazing opportunity 00:06:59.61\00:07:01.75 for poor tribal children. 00:07:01.78\00:07:03.52 The tribal areas are very poor 00:07:03.55\00:07:05.99 and when you understand the benefits of the child 00:07:06.02\00:07:10.79 being at Jeypore school. 00:07:10.83\00:07:13.50 First of all, they have a bed. 00:07:13.53\00:07:15.46 Back in the village they sleep on the floor with a blanket. 00:07:15.50\00:07:18.77 Secondly, they get feed. 00:07:18.80\00:07:21.10 Many of these tribal families struggle 00:07:21.14\00:07:24.01 because they're just farm laborers 00:07:24.04\00:07:27.24 or they're trying to eke out survival. 00:07:27.28\00:07:29.84 And so when the kids are at the school, 00:07:29.88\00:07:31.91 the parents know that the children are fed. 00:07:31.95\00:07:34.32 And thirdly, 00:07:34.35\00:07:35.68 they get a tremendous Christian education. 00:07:35.72\00:07:38.99 They have access to computers, electronic classrooms, 00:07:39.02\00:07:43.26 and they get thorough teaching in all subjects, 00:07:43.29\00:07:46.26 which is far more than they would get 00:07:46.29\00:07:48.53 at the local government schools in these remote areas. 00:07:48.56\00:07:53.64 But it's not just poor children 00:07:53.67\00:07:55.07 that Child Impact is offering an education too. 00:07:55.10\00:07:57.51 It is also those who have a disability. 00:07:57.54\00:07:59.84 In 2002, they built a school 00:07:59.87\00:08:01.64 for the hearing impaired in Kollegal, India. 00:08:01.68\00:08:04.25 The needs of deaf children are high, 00:08:04.28\00:08:05.95 especially in rural areas 00:08:05.98\00:08:07.78 where they often face prejudice and discrimination. 00:08:07.82\00:08:10.99 Having a school where they can learn skills 00:08:11.02\00:08:12.75 that give them opportunities 00:08:12.79\00:08:14.12 to have a choice in their career, 00:08:14.16\00:08:15.52 but they can pursue is critical. 00:08:15.56\00:08:18.13 Then in 2003, Child Impact opened a school 00:08:18.16\00:08:20.60 for the blind in Bobbilli. 00:08:20.63\00:08:22.23 This school especially 00:08:22.26\00:08:23.60 helps the poor children in rural areas 00:08:23.63\00:08:25.63 who would otherwise be left to do menial tasks 00:08:25.67\00:08:28.14 or even chained up at home. 00:08:28.17\00:08:30.37 The school for the blind gives them 00:08:30.41\00:08:31.74 hope to have fulfilling jobs and lives. 00:08:31.77\00:08:34.94 To me, it's just wonderful 00:08:34.98\00:08:36.41 to be able to do something for children 00:08:36.44\00:08:38.98 like the blind and the deaf 00:08:39.01\00:08:41.22 to give them an opportunity to do something special 00:08:41.25\00:08:45.89 with their lives for God. 00:08:45.92\00:08:48.22 And an opportunity that, you know, 00:08:48.26\00:08:51.53 coming from the villages and that they definitely 00:08:51.56\00:08:54.00 would never have had 00:08:54.03\00:08:55.36 with without the fact that our schools have been built 00:08:55.40\00:08:59.97 and sponsorship provided 00:09:00.00\00:09:01.90 so that the children can attend. 00:09:01.94\00:09:04.11 These children who suffer from a disability know that 00:09:04.14\00:09:06.57 they have a future 00:09:06.61\00:09:07.94 where they're able to choose their employment. 00:09:07.98\00:09:09.84 They are not a burden to their families, 00:09:09.88\00:09:11.55 but are able to provide for not only themselves, 00:09:11.58\00:09:14.05 but also their families. 00:09:14.08\00:09:15.65 Child Impact gives hope to children in India, 00:09:15.68\00:09:18.12 no matter their situation. 00:09:18.15\00:09:19.85 It's really tough in India, 00:09:19.89\00:09:21.39 the poverty, the number of people, 00:09:21.42\00:09:24.59 just the intense way of living. 00:09:24.63\00:09:27.00 You have to fight for survival. 00:09:27.03\00:09:29.56 And I guess it's just so enlightening 00:09:29.60\00:09:34.20 to see the hope that we do give children, 00:09:34.24\00:09:37.01 children who come from a poor village. 00:09:37.04\00:09:39.54 And one of the things 00:09:39.57\00:09:40.91 that's been a privilege in my job 00:09:40.94\00:09:42.94 is to go and visit the homes 00:09:42.98\00:09:45.21 where these children come from to meet their parents. 00:09:45.25\00:09:49.22 And often their parents are so grateful. 00:09:49.25\00:09:51.72 They want to kiss your hand or your feet that's just so, 00:09:51.75\00:09:55.56 it's embarrassing to be honest, 00:09:55.59\00:09:57.69 but they are just so grateful 00:09:57.73\00:10:00.03 that you the sponsors and our supporters 00:10:00.06\00:10:03.10 are giving these kids in education. 00:10:03.13\00:10:05.87 It doesn't matter if the children in a rural area 00:10:05.90\00:10:08.30 trafficked or have a disability, 00:10:08.34\00:10:10.71 they have a chance at a much better life, 00:10:10.74\00:10:12.64 thanks to sponsorship. 00:10:12.67\00:10:14.24 The education that sponsorship 00:10:14.28\00:10:15.94 provides has opened the world up 00:10:15.98\00:10:17.78 for them to go wherever God leads. 00:10:17.81\00:10:20.58 Two boys from Elim Orphanage, and one from Sunshine Home, 00:10:20.62\00:10:24.45 and about eight or more girls 00:10:24.49\00:10:26.45 from our Sunshine Orphanage 00:10:26.49\00:10:27.99 who are nurses and who are living there in 00:10:28.02\00:10:32.23 and working in UK. 00:10:32.26\00:10:36.06 And they have done very well and they, you know, 00:10:36.10\00:10:39.73 I've visited some of them 00:10:39.77\00:10:41.80 and it's so nice to see them 00:10:41.84\00:10:43.81 and to see them happy and really doing well 00:10:43.84\00:10:46.51 because they were given an opportunity 00:10:46.54\00:10:49.94 through sponsorship. 00:10:49.98\00:10:51.78 The work that Child Impact has done has made 00:10:51.81\00:10:53.88 all the difference in the lives 00:10:53.92\00:10:55.25 of thousands of children due in a large part 00:10:55.28\00:10:57.79 to high quality education. 00:10:57.82\00:11:00.39 What's our future in India? 00:11:00.42\00:11:02.46 Well, we are going to have to plan very carefully. 00:11:02.49\00:11:05.79 I have to be honest with you that 00:11:05.83\00:11:07.83 some of the mission school education 00:11:07.86\00:11:10.23 is now dropping below at certain standard, 00:11:10.27\00:11:13.77 and we have an obligation to ensure that 00:11:13.80\00:11:16.74 our children get an education 00:11:16.77\00:11:19.81 that's at least at government standard 00:11:19.84\00:11:22.24 and at the government acceptable level. 00:11:22.28\00:11:24.95 So we're going to choose very carefully 00:11:24.98\00:11:27.68 what schools we take on 00:11:27.72\00:11:29.88 and where we're going to operate in India 00:11:29.92\00:11:32.49 so that we can probably do a little less, 00:11:32.52\00:11:35.29 but do it far more effectively. 00:11:35.32\00:11:37.83 We will not drop any children. 00:11:37.86\00:11:39.96 And we're very committed to the children we have. 00:11:40.00\00:11:43.26 We're very committed to the special need school. 00:11:43.30\00:11:46.17 We're very committed to the orphans, 00:11:46.20\00:11:48.80 but we just simply, 00:11:48.84\00:11:50.61 again, to have to look carefully 00:11:50.64\00:11:52.41 at where we operate 00:11:52.44\00:11:53.78 and how we operate and do it better. 00:11:53.81\00:11:57.38 Child Impact is committed 00:11:57.41\00:11:58.78 to making sure that every dollar 00:11:58.81\00:12:00.42 they receive is used in the best way possible 00:12:00.45\00:12:03.49 that every child in their programs 00:12:03.52\00:12:05.15 will have the best opportunity 00:12:05.19\00:12:06.82 available to them through education. 00:12:06.86\00:12:09.52 Education that helps to address the many issues 00:12:09.56\00:12:11.89 that India faces. 00:12:11.93\00:12:13.53 It helps the orphaned, the trafficked, and the poor. 00:12:13.56\00:12:17.70 This new generation has the chance to make 00:12:17.73\00:12:19.90 a better life for not only themselves, 00:12:19.93\00:12:22.30 but for those around them and their country. 00:12:22.34\00:12:25.27 All this would not be possible without you, the sponsor. 00:12:25.31\00:12:28.91 Thank you to all the sponsors 00:12:28.94\00:12:30.61 who sacrifices that changed 00:12:30.65\00:12:32.25 so many lives in India and around the globe. 00:12:32.28\00:12:35.85 The impact that you're having in this world 00:12:35.88\00:12:38.05 can only truly be known in the world that is to come. 00:12:38.09\00:12:41.46 Sponsoring children 00:12:53.54\00:12:55.77 in activities like these mission schools 00:12:55.80\00:12:59.81 and opportunities is a tremendous way 00:12:59.84\00:13:03.21 to help form the character of young people 00:13:03.24\00:13:07.08 as they look to the future, 00:13:07.12\00:13:08.68 they will never forget 00:13:08.72\00:13:10.59 their association in a Christian environment. 00:13:10.62\00:13:13.62 And by God's grace, 00:13:13.66\00:13:14.99 many of them will become 00:13:15.02\00:13:16.62 members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:13:16.66\00:13:19.36 It is absolutely a powerful witness 00:13:19.39\00:13:22.93 to sponsor a child in Child Impact 00:13:22.96\00:13:26.33 and so many other organizations 00:13:26.37\00:13:29.37 that help young people to find Jesus. 00:13:29.40\00:13:33.91 Sponsoring a child not only has short term effects, 00:13:33.94\00:13:38.41 but it has a long term effect. 00:13:38.45\00:13:41.35 Sponsoring a child is investing 00:13:41.38\00:13:43.65 in the character of a young person 00:13:43.69\00:13:45.79 for eternity that 00:13:45.82\00:13:47.49 we're taping this right here 00:13:47.52\00:13:49.59 in Myanmar at the Myanmar Union Adventist Seminary. 00:13:49.62\00:13:54.13 And about one-third of the students, 00:13:54.16\00:13:56.83 or one quarter of the students are being sponsored 00:13:56.87\00:14:00.04 by Child Impact. 00:14:00.07\00:14:01.87 People who become workers in God's church, 00:14:01.90\00:14:05.77 people who make an impact 00:14:05.81\00:14:07.61 in the community have been people 00:14:07.64\00:14:09.84 who have been sponsored. 00:14:09.88\00:14:11.85 Your sponsorship is absolutely 00:14:11.88\00:14:14.62 an investment in the future of the church. 00:14:14.65\00:14:17.39
