Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:02.40\00:00:05.17 that gives hope and fosters permanent positive change 00:00:05.20\00:00:08.50 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:08.54\00:00:10.67 and their communities. 00:00:10.71\00:00:13.34 Countries include Zambia, Kenya, India, Nepal, 00:00:13.38\00:00:19.08 Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. 00:00:19.11\00:00:22.65 Child Impacts investment 00:00:22.68\00:00:24.02 in the lives of more than 3,500 children continues 00:00:24.05\00:00:27.39 to yield infinite returns. 00:00:27.42\00:00:29.79 Outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:29.82\00:00:32.29 to providing an education and a home for deaf 00:00:32.33\00:00:35.13 and blind children and orphans. 00:00:35.16\00:00:37.30 Above all, Child Impact's sponsors give hope 00:00:37.33\00:00:40.84 to the ones who need it the most. 00:00:40.87\00:00:43.71 When we look into the eyes of a child, 00:00:54.52\00:00:57.19 we are looking into the future because they are the ones 00:00:57.22\00:01:00.09 who are going to shape and mold the world of tomorrow. 00:01:00.12\00:01:03.76 It is our opportunity today to mold 00:01:03.79\00:01:06.06 and shape them for a better future. 00:01:06.09\00:01:08.90 While there are many organizations 00:01:08.93\00:01:10.43 that try to do this, there are few 00:01:10.47\00:01:12.57 that have as long and successful a track record 00:01:12.60\00:01:15.77 as Child Impact International. 00:01:15.80\00:01:18.77 In this episode, we will be looking at the history 00:01:18.81\00:01:21.58 and mission of this Christ-centered organization 00:01:21.61\00:01:24.25 How much sacrifice Jesus made for us 00:01:24.28\00:01:27.12 and how much God loves each one of you. 00:01:27.15\00:01:30.49 It all started back in 1966 00:01:30.52\00:01:33.09 with a young woman named Maisie Fook. 00:01:33.12\00:01:35.69 Maisie wanted to send clothing to needy children in Korea. 00:01:35.72\00:01:39.56 So she and her husband Dennis registered Asian Aid Australia, 00:01:39.59\00:01:42.90 which later expanded to the United States 00:01:42.93\00:01:45.00 as Asian Aid USA, 00:01:45.03\00:01:46.67 and then became Child Impact International. 00:01:46.70\00:01:50.17 Their efforts attracted the attention 00:01:50.21\00:01:51.94 of a 26 year old Helen Eager, who began volunteering. 00:01:51.97\00:01:56.58 I think the first time, I was involved with anything 00:01:56.61\00:01:59.11 with Asian Aid, we went to Maisie Fook's house 00:01:59.15\00:02:02.95 to pack some clothes 00:02:02.98\00:02:05.95 that they were sending to South Korea 00:02:05.99\00:02:08.26 because Asian Aid actually started in South Korea. 00:02:08.29\00:02:11.73 And, I can remember I only own one, 00:02:11.76\00:02:15.60 very nice cardigan, and I took it off 00:02:15.63\00:02:18.10 because it was hot 00:02:18.13\00:02:19.50 and somehow my best cardigan must have gone to South Korea. 00:02:19.53\00:02:24.11 But, and then we actually sponsored a girl 00:02:24.14\00:02:26.88 to do her nursing in South Korea. 00:02:26.91\00:02:30.98 Shortly after, they saw the need 00:02:31.01\00:02:32.98 that Vietnamese children had for education 00:02:33.01\00:02:35.32 and expanded their work to help them. 00:02:35.35\00:02:37.82 Unfortunately, they weren't able to operate there for long. 00:02:37.85\00:02:41.02 War had been raging in Vietnam for around two decades, 00:02:41.06\00:02:44.33 but the fall of Saigon in 1975 00:02:44.36\00:02:46.90 and the subsequent communist takeover of the country 00:02:46.93\00:02:49.50 meant that it was no longer safe to work there, 00:02:49.53\00:02:53.13 but this did not stop the mission 00:02:53.17\00:02:54.54 of Asian Aid in other areas. 00:02:54.57\00:02:56.44 When Maisie heard of the need in Bangladesh, 00:02:56.47\00:02:58.51 she knew where they were going to expand. 00:02:58.54\00:03:00.48 She really loved Bangladesh 00:03:00.51\00:03:03.04 and they had different things 00:03:03.08\00:03:06.75 they were doing there as well as educating children. 00:03:06.78\00:03:09.88 They had one place where they had the women making baskets 00:03:09.92\00:03:14.42 and this kind of thing. 00:03:14.46\00:03:16.02 A major milestone for the still young Asian Aid 00:03:16.06\00:03:18.79 also happened in Bangladesh. 00:03:18.83\00:03:21.26 They saw that Monosapara School was going to close. 00:03:21.30\00:03:24.67 So they stepped in to save it. 00:03:24.70\00:03:26.63 Today, Monosapara 00:03:26.67\00:03:28.00 is one of the largest Adventist schools 00:03:28.04\00:03:29.80 in Bangladesh. 00:03:29.84\00:03:31.47 Helen Eager was inspired to see the work 00:03:31.51\00:03:33.88 that Asian Aid was doing, 00:03:33.91\00:03:35.54 but felt that she could do more 00:03:35.58\00:03:37.08 by starting her own organization. 00:03:37.11\00:03:40.05 I was living in Cooranbong back in those days 00:03:40.08\00:03:43.15 and we actually wanted to start our own charity, but they said, 00:03:43.18\00:03:48.76 New South Wales was not registering 00:03:48.79\00:03:50.43 any charities at the moment. 00:03:50.46\00:03:51.99 And so we requested to become a branch of Asian Aid. 00:03:52.03\00:03:57.23 And so we became the Hunter Valley branch 00:03:57.27\00:03:59.73 in Cooranbong. 00:03:59.77\00:04:01.70 During this time, Helen did a lot to increase 00:04:01.74\00:04:03.81 the work of Asian Aid, helping it to expand into India 00:04:03.84\00:04:07.04 and other countries. 00:04:07.08\00:04:08.41 I think it wasn't until 1979 that I started going to India. 00:04:08.44\00:04:13.21 But from about then I went every year to India 00:04:13.25\00:04:16.52 and then a little bit later to Bangladesh 00:04:16.55\00:04:19.15 and Nepal also every year 00:04:19.19\00:04:22.59 from 1979 onwards. 00:04:22.62\00:04:25.59 All these trips helped Helen to know the needs 00:04:25.63\00:04:28.06 that each area had. 00:04:28.10\00:04:30.00 After 23 years of leadership, 00:04:30.03\00:04:31.93 Maisie Fook retired from Asian Aid in 1989. 00:04:31.97\00:04:36.57 Helen stepped in as CEO 00:04:36.60\00:04:38.17 and led the organization's continued expansion 00:04:38.21\00:04:40.61 into more countries and more ways to help children 00:04:40.64\00:04:43.55 and the medical needs of the poor. 00:04:43.58\00:04:46.25 Helen oversaw the establishment of orphanages, 00:04:46.28\00:04:48.85 schools and developed a bond 00:04:48.88\00:04:50.65 with many of the sponsored children 00:04:50.69\00:04:52.32 that helped to shape their lives. 00:04:52.35\00:04:54.42 I'm like Eager, in this life, I thought of doing service 00:04:54.46\00:04:57.36 because she has sacrificed a lot for us, child like us. 00:04:57.39\00:05:00.96 So, I thought this field that medical field has got 00:05:01.00\00:05:06.50 a lot of opportunities to serve in the rural areas. 00:05:06.53\00:05:10.24 My early memories of her, she used to give candies 00:05:10.27\00:05:13.88 and every time she used to greet us, 00:05:13.91\00:05:18.21 she used to give us a hug, a kiss. 00:05:18.25\00:05:20.08 She used to tell us a lot of stories. 00:05:20.12\00:05:22.48 And then she had so many, 00:05:22.52\00:05:24.89 so much to tell us every time she came. 00:05:24.92\00:05:28.46 Her kind and loving influence can be seen 00:05:28.49\00:05:30.59 in the smiling faces of many generations of children 00:05:30.63\00:05:33.70 who have had the privilege of being around her. 00:05:33.73\00:05:37.80 In 2002, after many years of renting, 00:05:37.83\00:05:40.50 a school was constructed for the deaf in Kollegal India. 00:05:40.54\00:05:44.51 This school provides food, boarding and an education. 00:05:44.54\00:05:49.11 It is also a beacon of hope to many deaf children, 00:05:49.14\00:05:51.91 since it is located in a poor rural area 00:05:51.95\00:05:54.52 where it's hard to get an education, 00:05:54.55\00:05:56.79 which is especially true for the deaf. 00:05:56.82\00:05:59.32 Many of the children who have graduated 00:05:59.35\00:06:01.12 from this school have gone on to have successful careers. 00:06:01.16\00:06:05.06 The next year, ASI continued growth 00:06:05.09\00:06:07.06 with the blind school opening in Bobbili, India. 00:06:07.10\00:06:10.07 This school is home to over 100 children 00:06:10.10\00:06:12.47 who are able to realize their dreams. 00:06:12.50\00:06:14.84 Some work in government 00:06:14.87\00:06:16.20 while others have become teachers 00:06:16.24\00:06:17.71 and many other careers. 00:06:17.74\00:06:19.31 After 16 years, as CEO, 00:06:19.34\00:06:21.64 Helen Eager stepped down from that role, 00:06:21.68\00:06:23.71 but continued to work with Asian Aid Australia. 00:06:23.75\00:06:26.25 Inspired by the work that Asian Aid Australia was doing, 00:06:26.28\00:06:29.25 a group in America decided to form Asian Aid USA. 00:06:29.28\00:06:33.12 After several years of operation, 00:06:33.15\00:06:35.12 Jim Rennie became the CEO of Asian Aid USA. 00:06:35.16\00:06:38.43 The organization expanded the amount of schools 00:06:38.46\00:06:40.80 and orphanages that it either partnered 00:06:40.83\00:06:42.80 with or directly operated. 00:06:42.83\00:06:44.83 Asian Aid USA later changed 00:06:44.87\00:06:46.74 its name to Child Impact International. 00:06:46.77\00:06:49.84 In 2016, Jim led the way in addressing a need 00:06:49.87\00:06:53.38 that he had seen in his travels around India. 00:06:53.41\00:06:56.28 Over the years as I visited India, Bangladesh, 00:06:56.31\00:06:59.48 and Myanmar, I became very aware 00:06:59.51\00:07:02.72 of the number of children being trafficked. 00:07:02.75\00:07:06.55 We've even had children disappear from our schools. 00:07:06.59\00:07:10.29 They've gone home for the holidays 00:07:10.33\00:07:12.59 and simply disappeared from the village, 00:07:12.63\00:07:15.30 they're being trafficked. 00:07:15.33\00:07:16.97 And the problem is huge. 00:07:17.00\00:07:19.13 And I just felt the burden that we had to do something. 00:07:19.17\00:07:22.64 We had to play a small part in helping rescue children 00:07:22.67\00:07:27.24 from the various aspects of trafficking. 00:07:27.28\00:07:31.81 Jim decided that the best way to address the problem 00:07:31.85\00:07:34.35 would be to form a partnership 00:07:34.38\00:07:35.95 with a non-government organization in Bangalore. 00:07:35.98\00:07:39.55 Operation Child Rescue was formed as a project 00:07:39.59\00:07:42.49 of Child Impact to assist children 00:07:42.52\00:07:44.66 that are abandoned 00:07:44.69\00:07:46.03 or trafficked beginning in India. 00:07:46.06\00:07:49.00 Child Impact was excited that it could help 00:07:49.03\00:07:50.97 in some small way in giving rescued children hope. 00:07:51.00\00:07:55.60 With a desire to reach more needy children, 00:07:55.64\00:07:57.97 Asian Aid USA decided to change their name 00:07:58.01\00:08:00.71 to Child Impact International. 00:08:00.74\00:08:03.51 This name reflects far more clearly 00:08:03.55\00:08:06.11 the critical work that we are doing 00:08:06.15\00:08:08.05 with very needy students, 00:08:08.08\00:08:10.05 their families and mission schools. 00:08:10.09\00:08:12.59 Child Impact International gives momentum and direction 00:08:12.62\00:08:16.36 to a bold road strategy that will impact 00:08:16.39\00:08:19.16 the lives of thousands of additional children. 00:08:19.19\00:08:22.90 This name avoids any confusion in regards to where we work 00:08:22.93\00:08:27.10 and what people consider Asia. 00:08:27.14\00:08:30.27 This name gives a clear distinction 00:08:30.31\00:08:32.84 between this organization and Asian Aid Australia, 00:08:32.87\00:08:36.75 which are completely separate Since then, 00:08:36.78\00:08:40.32 Child Impact International has lived up to its new name 00:08:40.35\00:08:43.25 by expanding into Zambia. 00:08:43.28\00:08:45.15 We'd always had a strong request for Africa. 00:08:45.19\00:08:48.36 There are many people 00:08:48.39\00:08:49.72 who have a burden and a heart for Africa. 00:08:49.76\00:08:51.99 And so we looked at it and we were very excited 00:08:52.03\00:08:55.03 find Riverside Farms that we could partner with. 00:08:55.06\00:08:59.63 Riverside Farms give us good management. 00:08:59.67\00:09:02.80 They operate a good school so that we can be confident 00:09:02.84\00:09:06.78 that our sponsorship 00:09:06.81\00:09:08.64 on the ground is very effective. 00:09:08.68\00:09:12.28 Riverside Farms has and continues to grow 00:09:12.31\00:09:15.28 by adding more buildings to meet the great need 00:09:15.32\00:09:17.59 that Zambia has for education. 00:09:17.62\00:09:20.56 The expansions includes secondary education 00:09:20.59\00:09:23.16 that will enable up to 150 sponsored students 00:09:23.19\00:09:26.29 to continue their education. 00:09:26.33\00:09:30.37 In 2017, Helen Eager, fully retired, but the impact 00:09:31.37\00:09:34.14 that she has had on thousands of lives continues 00:09:34.17\00:09:37.77 Helen Eager is an amazing woman. 00:09:37.81\00:09:41.34 And just two weeks before filming with us, 00:09:41.38\00:09:44.08 I was able to meet her in Australia. 00:09:44.11\00:09:47.25 She's getting on in life, but she still has a passion 00:09:47.28\00:09:50.35 for the children, the work that she did 00:09:50.39\00:09:53.49 to establish Asian Aid and what then in America 00:09:53.52\00:09:57.26 it became Child Impact is just an amazing story. 00:09:57.29\00:10:01.73 She's really a mother Teresa in action. 00:10:01.76\00:10:07.00 She's now retired in the city of Brisbane in Australia. 00:10:07.04\00:10:12.44 Helen's had a really tough time lately. 00:10:12.47\00:10:15.08 Her husband passed away and she lost all of her house 00:10:15.11\00:10:18.28 and belongings in the Australian bushfires, 00:10:18.31\00:10:21.72 but she's still committed to the children 00:10:21.75\00:10:24.35 even the day that I picked her up. 00:10:24.39\00:10:27.32 She'd just been down to the shop 00:10:27.36\00:10:28.82 to buy some more wool. 00:10:28.86\00:10:30.73 And she was knitting jerseys for the kids in Nepal. 00:10:30.76\00:10:34.93 I just ask for your prayers for Helen, 00:10:34.96\00:10:37.33 and we certainly stay in touch with her. 00:10:37.37\00:10:40.00 And we certainly keep her up-to-date 00:10:40.04\00:10:42.30 on the amazing work that she established 00:10:42.34\00:10:45.14 in so many countries. 00:10:45.17\00:10:47.14 Please pray for Helen. 00:10:47.18\00:10:49.28 In spite of all of the challenges 00:10:49.31\00:10:51.05 Helen has faced, 00:10:51.08\00:10:52.41 her main focus continues to be the children. 00:10:52.45\00:10:56.28 I'm just more grateful than I can express 00:10:56.32\00:11:00.06 that Child Impact is growing and doing so much to help 00:11:00.09\00:11:04.13 as many young people as possible and children, 00:11:04.16\00:11:07.26 small ones as well as bigger ones. 00:11:07.30\00:11:09.33 And Jim Rennie has been telling me 00:11:09.36\00:11:11.83 some of the opportunities and some of the extra things 00:11:11.87\00:11:16.64 that you're all doing. 00:11:16.67\00:11:18.01 And I think it's just wonderful and I'm very grateful. 00:11:18.04\00:11:21.61 Sponsoring a child and giving them an opportunity 00:11:21.64\00:11:24.88 to get an education and to do something special 00:11:24.91\00:11:29.25 or useful with their lives is just, 00:11:29.28\00:11:31.72 it has just changed the lives of thousands 00:11:31.75\00:11:34.32 and thousands of children 00:11:34.36\00:11:35.76 that I have actually seen myself with the, 00:11:35.79\00:11:40.23 and many of them still contact me. 00:11:40.26\00:11:42.23 And I think from memory in Bangladesh, 00:11:42.26\00:11:44.80 they said once that about half of the workers 00:11:44.83\00:11:48.37 in the church in Bangladesh had been sponsored children 00:11:48.40\00:11:53.58 that had grown up and we're now working in, 00:11:53.61\00:11:57.05 working for God. 00:11:57.08\00:11:58.41 And I just think that it's an amazing ministry 00:11:58.45\00:12:03.55 and we just want to thank everyone 00:12:03.59\00:12:06.12 who's been involved. 00:12:06.15\00:12:07.49 It's just... 00:12:07.52\00:12:09.69 Words fail me. 00:12:09.72\00:12:12.63 From its humble beginnings with Maissie Fook wanting 00:12:12.66\00:12:15.16 to send clothing to needy children in Asia 00:12:15.20\00:12:17.57 to now operating in seven countries 00:12:17.60\00:12:19.37 around the world. 00:12:19.40\00:12:20.74 The dedication of these faithful workers 00:12:20.77\00:12:22.34 can be seen in the thousands of change lives. 00:12:22.37\00:12:26.11 Lives that would otherwise have had no hope. 00:12:26.14\00:12:29.64 Sponsors like you have made it possible for Asian Aid to grow 00:12:29.68\00:12:33.01 over the last 55 years and to expand. 00:12:33.05\00:12:35.95 This is why Asian Aid USA changed its name 00:12:35.98\00:12:38.35 to Child Impact International. 00:12:38.39\00:12:40.59 Thank you. 00:12:40.62\00:12:41.96 Your sponsorship has made all of this possible 00:12:41.99\00:12:44.46 Sponsoring children in activities 00:12:53.47\00:12:57.81 like these mission schools and opportunities 00:12:57.84\00:13:01.14 is a tremendous way 00:13:01.18\00:13:03.21 to help form the character of young people. 00:13:03.24\00:13:07.08 As they look to the future, 00:13:07.12\00:13:08.45 they will never forget their association 00:13:08.48\00:13:11.69 in a Christian environment. 00:13:11.72\00:13:13.62 And by God's grace, 00:13:13.66\00:13:14.99 many of them will become 00:13:15.02\00:13:16.62 members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:13:16.66\00:13:19.29 It is absolutely a powerful witness to sponsor 00:13:19.33\00:13:23.63 a child in Child Impact and so many other organizations 00:13:23.67\00:13:29.27 that help young people to find Jesus. 00:13:29.30\00:13:34.01 Sponsoring a child, not only has short term effects, 00:13:34.04\00:13:38.21 but it has a long-term effect. 00:13:38.25\00:13:41.32 Sponsoring a child is investing in the character 00:13:41.35\00:13:44.62 of a young person for eternity that we're taping this 00:13:44.65\00:13:48.52 right here in Myanmar 00:13:48.56\00:13:50.79 at the Myanmar Union Adventist Seminary. 00:13:50.83\00:13:54.16 And about one third of the students or one quarter 00:13:54.20\00:13:57.80 of the students are being sponsored by Child Impact. 00:13:57.83\00:14:01.94 People who become workers in God's church, 00:14:01.97\00:14:05.71 people who make an impact in the community 00:14:05.74\00:14:08.78 have been people who have been sponsored. 00:14:08.81\00:14:11.75 Your sponsorship is absolutely 00:14:11.78\00:14:14.48 an investment in the future of the church.
