Hi there. 00:00:04.37\00:00:05.70 I'm Jim Rennie, 00:00:05.73\00:00:07.07 CEO of Child Impact International. 00:00:07.10\00:00:09.80 And I've got some exciting news 00:00:09.84\00:00:12.27 about our new project in Zambia. 00:00:12.31\00:00:15.08 It's a unique new mission school opportunity 00:00:15.11\00:00:18.48 that will expand the ministry of our partner, 00:00:18.51\00:00:21.78 Riverside Farms 00:00:21.82\00:00:23.69 through an expanded 00:00:23.72\00:00:25.05 Child Impact sponsorship program. 00:00:25.09\00:00:29.22 The Riverside Farm partnership with Child Impact International 00:00:29.26\00:00:33.96 allows for a great partnership 00:00:34.00\00:00:36.26 between two strong Adventist ministries. 00:00:36.30\00:00:40.60 Riverside Farm provides a structured 00:00:40.64\00:00:43.51 and well managed school project 00:00:43.54\00:00:46.54 with an Adventist education program. 00:00:46.57\00:00:49.31 While Child Impact provides poor children 00:00:49.34\00:00:52.81 an education and sharing key revenue 00:00:52.85\00:00:56.35 for the new school. 00:00:56.38\00:00:58.39 The government have approved the school 00:00:58.42\00:01:00.89 and it will be run by Riverside Farm management 00:01:00.92\00:01:04.33 on the same basis 00:01:04.36\00:01:05.89 that they run the current primary school. 00:01:05.93\00:01:09.70 The school will cover grades 8-12. 00:01:09.73\00:01:13.50 The school will be a day school 00:01:13.54\00:01:15.80 with lunch supplied for the students. 00:01:15.84\00:01:18.47 The approximate capacity will be 40 students per class 00:01:18.51\00:01:22.78 with two groups per day 00:01:22.81\00:01:25.21 since the classes are by subject 00:01:25.25\00:01:27.88 and not by grade. 00:01:27.92\00:01:29.75 The school will be located 300 meters 00:01:29.78\00:01:32.95 from the current primary school. 00:01:32.99\00:01:35.26 Housing will be provided for the headmaster 00:01:35.29\00:01:38.49 and the deputy headmaster. 00:01:38.53\00:01:41.40 The need for education is strong, 00:01:41.43\00:01:44.00 and there is no Adventist secondary school 00:01:44.03\00:01:46.30 in the area. 00:01:46.33\00:01:48.34 The school will allow the 150 primary school students 00:01:48.37\00:01:52.87 to expand their education. 00:01:52.91\00:01:55.34 Within the attendance of 300 students in the future, 00:01:55.38\00:01:59.55 sponsorship will grow to 150 plus. 00:01:59.58\00:02:03.99 The school will give the local needy children 00:02:04.02\00:02:07.19 an Adventist education 00:02:07.22\00:02:09.26 and will be a key outreach for Riverside Farms ministry. 00:02:09.29\00:02:14.20 ASI and donors 00:02:14.23\00:02:15.90 have provided one day buildings for the schools, 00:02:15.93\00:02:19.13 foundation and construction of the base buildings. 00:02:19.17\00:02:22.77 Child Impact has been asked to complete the project 00:02:22.80\00:02:26.37 and furnish the school with furniture 00:02:26.41\00:02:29.44 and educational resources. 00:02:29.48\00:02:32.18 The need is $150,000. 00:02:32.21\00:02:36.05 We have some great news for this project. 00:02:36.08\00:02:38.82 We can double your donation. 00:02:38.85\00:02:41.62 Child Impact has matching funds for this project. 00:02:41.66\00:02:46.23 Each dollar given 00:02:46.26\00:02:47.76 will be matched with the dollar to $75,000. 00:02:47.80\00:02:52.40 For each dollar you give 00:02:52.43\00:02:54.14 it will be matched dollar for dollar. 00:02:54.17\00:02:57.27 Why should you support Child Impact 00:02:57.31\00:03:00.08 and Riverside Farms in this project? 00:03:00.11\00:03:03.14 Let me explain. 00:03:03.18\00:03:04.71 It expands the mission average of Riverside Farms in Zambia. 00:03:04.75\00:03:10.92 It widens Child Impact's mission 00:03:10.95\00:03:13.86 in Zambia. 00:03:13.89\00:03:15.39 It will extend the sponsorship life 00:03:15.42\00:03:18.09 of the Child Impact children 00:03:18.13\00:03:20.46 already sponsored at the primary school. 00:03:20.50\00:03:23.53 It insures over 250 poor children 00:03:23.57\00:03:26.97 sponsored by Child Impact 00:03:27.00\00:03:29.20 will be given an Adventist education 00:03:29.24\00:03:32.17 through to grade 12 or higher. 00:03:32.21\00:03:34.88 It is valued for the donors funds, 00:03:34.91\00:03:37.45 as the school has a construction time 00:03:37.48\00:03:40.22 of less than 12 months. 00:03:40.25\00:03:42.85 There will be no cost overrun 00:03:42.88\00:03:45.19 as Child Impact and Riverside Farms 00:03:45.22\00:03:48.22 guarantee the project costs. 00:03:48.26\00:03:51.59 And there's a proven project management team 00:03:51.63\00:03:54.20 at Riverside Farms led by Ellen Knowles, 00:03:54.23\00:03:57.83 who is well-known for construction 00:03:57.87\00:04:00.54 of this type of one day buildings. 00:04:00.57\00:04:04.17 Please go online right now 00:04:04.21\00:04:06.04 for full information or to donate. 00:04:06.07\00:04:09.88 Childimpact.org is our website. 00:04:09.91\00:04:12.88 That's childimpact.org. 00:04:12.91\00:04:15.42 Or call us at 423-9100-667. 00:04:15.45\00:04:21.92 That's 423-9100-667. 00:04:21.96\00:04:27.50 I really want to thank you if you can join us 00:04:27.53\00:04:30.23 for this exciting project. 00:04:30.27\00:04:32.00 You look out over the field 00:05:08.64\00:05:10.17 that will provide you and your family with food 00:05:10.21\00:05:12.51 for the coming year and seed for the next. 00:05:12.54\00:05:15.51 But all you see is miles of sunbaked ground 00:05:15.54\00:05:19.08 and withered plants. 00:05:19.11\00:05:20.98 Welcome to Zambia. 00:05:21.02\00:05:23.25 Last year, we had a partial crop failure 00:05:23.28\00:05:24.72 here in Zambia. 00:05:24.75\00:05:26.09 And this year, 00:05:26.12\00:05:27.46 there's been a complete crop failure. 00:05:27.49\00:05:28.86 If you go and talk to the oldest people 00:05:28.89\00:05:30.23 in the villages, 00:05:30.26\00:05:31.59 they'll tell you 00:05:31.63\00:05:32.96 this is the worst famine, drought 00:05:32.99\00:05:36.30 that they've seen in their lifetime, 00:05:36.33\00:05:37.70 which is saying something. 00:05:37.73\00:05:39.07 We've had some extraordinary famines 00:05:39.10\00:05:40.44 in the period of last 15 years, 00:05:40.47\00:05:42.90 and so we're seeing that need, that hunger, 00:05:42.94\00:05:46.14 translating into people's demand for work, 00:05:46.17\00:05:49.64 just general need. 00:05:49.68\00:05:52.28 Riverside Farms began with the mission 00:05:52.31\00:05:54.28 to reach the needs of the people in Zambia, 00:05:54.32\00:05:56.45 located 70 miles south of Lusaka, 00:05:56.48\00:05:58.89 which is the capital of Zambia. 00:05:58.92\00:06:00.26 They started this mission in the early 70s. 00:06:00.29\00:06:02.62 Greg Harding is the executive director 00:06:02.66\00:06:04.59 for Riverside Farms. 00:06:04.63\00:06:06.63 Our mission is to reach the needs of people 00:06:06.66\00:06:08.90 here in Zambia. 00:06:08.93\00:06:10.73 And that encompasses both their physical needs, 00:06:10.77\00:06:13.70 which are huge here in Africa, 00:06:13.74\00:06:15.77 and also the spiritual and educational needs. 00:06:15.80\00:06:19.14 One of the ways that Riverside Farms 00:06:19.17\00:06:20.64 is helping the people of Southern Zambia 00:06:20.68\00:06:22.18 is through farming. 00:06:22.21\00:06:23.55 Food is a resource 00:06:23.58\00:06:24.91 that many of us take for granted. 00:06:24.95\00:06:26.35 But for the poor villagers, 00:06:26.38\00:06:27.78 it is something that they struggle 00:06:27.82\00:06:29.15 to get enough of. 00:06:29.18\00:06:30.52 While Zambia's economy is growing and doing better 00:06:30.55\00:06:32.62 than many other African countries, 00:06:32.65\00:06:34.09 it still isn't enough. 00:06:34.12\00:06:36.29 So the farm is something I personally really love, 00:06:36.32\00:06:38.99 love being on the farm working on it. 00:06:39.03\00:06:41.26 We grow bananas as our primary crop, 00:06:41.30\00:06:44.23 we grew about 34 hectares just over 80 acres of bananas. 00:06:44.27\00:06:49.44 And those produce 00:06:49.47\00:06:51.11 about 170 truckloads of bananas every year. 00:06:51.14\00:06:54.51 About 60% of Zambians live 00:07:04.12\00:07:05.99 under the nation's poverty line, 00:07:06.02\00:07:07.72 with rural poverty standing at almost 78%. 00:07:07.76\00:07:11.23 In a 2007 study, Zambia was ranked 117 00:07:11.26\00:07:15.36 out of 128 countries 00:07:15.40\00:07:17.63 on the global competitiveness index, 00:07:17.67\00:07:19.93 because of many factors 00:07:19.97\00:07:21.30 that have negatively affected them economically. 00:07:21.34\00:07:24.64 Most Zambians spend 60% of their income on food, 00:07:24.67\00:07:27.71 which leaves them with no resources 00:07:27.74\00:07:29.34 to send their children to school. 00:07:29.38\00:07:31.71 Not only that, 00:07:31.75\00:07:33.08 but when your income also depends on growing food, 00:07:33.11\00:07:35.42 you are left with a huge problem. 00:07:35.45\00:07:38.35 Her name is Regina. 00:07:38.39\00:07:40.32 And I have got to know her 00:07:40.36\00:07:41.79 because whenever there's piece work at Riverside, 00:07:41.82\00:07:44.19 you see Regina here, 00:07:44.23\00:07:45.96 and she's one of the hardest workers. 00:07:45.99\00:07:48.20 So each department, they all want to hire Regina, 00:07:48.23\00:07:52.17 because she puts everything into her work. 00:07:52.20\00:07:54.77 She has nine children 00:07:54.80\00:07:56.54 and five dependent grandchildren 00:07:56.57\00:07:58.74 on her. 00:07:58.77\00:08:00.11 And the thing that I like about Regina, 00:08:00.14\00:08:03.24 you never see her not smiling. 00:08:03.28\00:08:05.68 And she just takes life as it comes. 00:08:05.71\00:08:07.92 She does the best she can and she goes forward. 00:08:07.95\00:08:12.85 Regina's hard work ethic 00:08:12.89\00:08:14.22 is shared by a majority of Zambians, 00:08:14.26\00:08:16.56 but many factors have kept them from progressing. 00:08:16.59\00:08:19.13 One of those factors 00:08:19.16\00:08:20.50 is that only a few areas use irrigation 00:08:20.53\00:08:22.56 while the rest rely only on rain, 00:08:22.60\00:08:24.67 which has led to many failed crops 00:08:24.70\00:08:26.37 due to drought. 00:08:26.40\00:08:27.74 The other issue is that most of the farmers 00:08:27.77\00:08:29.47 are not able to afford farm equipment, 00:08:29.50\00:08:31.67 so they have to do everything by hand. 00:08:31.71\00:08:33.74 This greatly decreases the amount of land 00:08:33.78\00:08:35.68 that they can farm. 00:08:35.71\00:08:37.05 Even though there are limitations, 00:08:37.08\00:08:38.71 Zambia is not lacking usable farmland. 00:08:38.75\00:08:41.38 Fifty eight percent of Zambia 00:08:41.42\00:08:42.75 is classified as medium to high potential 00:08:42.78\00:08:45.05 for agricultural production. 00:08:45.09\00:08:46.79 However, only 15% of this land is currently under cultivation. 00:08:46.82\00:08:52.53 Well, this is pretty tough, 00:08:52.56\00:08:54.30 but I'm right here in the village 00:08:54.33\00:08:57.00 near Riverside and this is Regina. 00:08:57.03\00:09:00.74 And this is one of Regina's three fields. 00:09:00.77\00:09:03.57 Now normally, she gets 80 sects of maize from this field. 00:09:03.61\00:09:08.64 And that's what she really lives on. 00:09:08.68\00:09:11.08 That's what she educates her children with. 00:09:11.11\00:09:13.82 But this year, 00:09:13.85\00:09:15.18 she hasn't got one cob of corn from this field. 00:09:15.22\00:09:19.19 So this is going to have a dramatic impact 00:09:19.22\00:09:21.72 not only on Regina, but on her village 00:09:21.76\00:09:24.53 and across the whole of Zambia. 00:09:24.56\00:09:27.06 Now I have to say we've just visited the village 00:09:27.10\00:09:30.13 and this is going to be very, very tough 00:09:30.17\00:09:32.43 on these people. 00:09:32.47\00:09:33.80 So just in one small way, 00:09:33.84\00:09:35.87 the fact that we can help sponsor Regina's children 00:09:35.90\00:09:39.81 bring some relief. 00:09:39.84\00:09:41.54 But I'm really scared of what the future holds 00:09:41.58\00:09:44.38 for families like Regina's in Zambia in the future. 00:09:44.41\00:09:48.92 In Zambia, the people grow maize 00:09:48.95\00:09:52.75 during the rainy season 00:09:52.79\00:09:54.12 because that is their way to get a little bit ahead 00:09:54.16\00:09:57.19 not only with their food 00:09:57.23\00:09:58.56 but with other needs that they have. 00:09:58.59\00:10:00.80 And since Regina is such a hard worker, 00:10:00.83\00:10:03.03 she put in three fields of maize. 00:10:03.06\00:10:05.87 Worked hard, you know, got the soil ready, 00:10:05.90\00:10:08.44 planted it, weeded it. 00:10:08.47\00:10:10.67 And then no rains came. 00:10:10.71\00:10:12.97 And she usually gets 00:10:13.01\00:10:14.34 between 80 and 100 bags of maize, 00:10:14.38\00:10:17.25 which keeps them through the year. 00:10:17.28\00:10:19.31 And she told us 00:10:19.35\00:10:20.68 as we went out to see her field, 00:10:20.72\00:10:22.65 it could make you cry. 00:10:22.68\00:10:24.39 She said, "I did not get even one cob." 00:10:24.42\00:10:27.36 She says, "I don't know what this year will bring." 00:10:27.39\00:10:30.19 You've just heard the urgent need of this lady 00:10:30.23\00:10:32.56 and what you don't know 00:10:32.59\00:10:33.93 is that she has nine children and five grandchildren 00:10:33.96\00:10:38.27 that she is raising. 00:10:38.30\00:10:39.83 So you can see that this failure of a crop 00:10:39.87\00:10:44.37 is going to have a dramatic impact 00:10:44.41\00:10:46.37 on families like these. 00:10:46.41\00:10:48.21 This is a lady that really works hard. 00:10:48.24\00:10:50.78 She goes to Riverside and gets work when she can. 00:10:50.81\00:10:53.92 And normally when there's a crop, 00:10:53.95\00:10:55.82 she does three fields on her own. 00:10:55.85\00:10:58.42 So this shows the commitment that this lady has bringing up 00:10:58.45\00:11:03.09 nine children and five grandchildren. 00:11:03.12\00:11:08.23 It is not just survival that keeps Regina going. 00:11:08.26\00:11:10.33 It is also the desire to give her children 00:11:10.37\00:11:12.50 and grandchildren an Adventist education. 00:11:12.53\00:11:15.24 Religiously Zambia's almost entirely 00:11:15.27\00:11:17.21 a Christian nation 00:11:17.24\00:11:18.57 with 75% being Protestant and 20% Catholic. 00:11:18.61\00:11:21.84 The Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:11:21.88\00:11:23.21 has a major presence in Zambia, 00:11:23.24\00:11:24.81 with one out of every 18 Zambians 00:11:24.85\00:11:26.61 being an Adventist. 00:11:26.65\00:11:27.98 This is the highest of any country in the world. 00:11:28.02\00:11:30.95 To put that in perspective, 00:11:30.99\00:11:32.32 the United States and Zambia 00:11:32.35\00:11:33.69 have nearly the same amount of Adventist members. 00:11:33.72\00:11:36.52 One of the first Adventist missionary 00:11:36.56\00:11:38.19 to Zambia was W.H. Anderson, 00:11:38.23\00:11:40.46 who began his work in the late 1800s. 00:11:40.50\00:11:43.30 At one point, his family and two other families 00:11:43.33\00:11:45.27 were living out of an ox wagon for five months. 00:11:45.30\00:11:48.94 In spite of their hardships, 00:11:48.97\00:11:50.31 they continue to spread the gospel 00:11:50.34\00:11:52.11 and converted many. 00:11:52.14\00:11:54.14 A quote from Anderson shows why they were so successful 00:11:54.18\00:11:57.01 in spreading the gospel. 00:11:57.05\00:11:58.85 "When a man goes to the mission field, 00:11:58.88\00:12:00.88 he must have love for the people 00:12:00.92\00:12:02.72 if he is to win them. 00:12:02.75\00:12:04.19 If he does not have love, he might as well not go. 00:12:04.22\00:12:07.22 Love is the basis of all missionary work." 00:12:07.26\00:12:11.69 In spite of the large Adventist presence here, 00:12:11.73\00:12:13.63 there are hardly any Adventist schools 00:12:13.66\00:12:15.70 with only three secondary schools 00:12:15.73\00:12:17.30 and one university. 00:12:17.33\00:12:18.83 The United States has approximately 00:12:18.87\00:12:20.27 158 secondary schools 00:12:20.30\00:12:22.10 and 14 colleges and universities. 00:12:22.14\00:12:24.91 More Adventist schools in Zambia 00:12:24.94\00:12:26.41 are needed not just to help with their immediate needs, 00:12:26.44\00:12:28.94 but also the spiritual needs as well. 00:12:28.98\00:12:31.25 Adventist schools are an opportunity 00:12:31.28\00:12:33.25 to reach the children of the community 00:12:33.28\00:12:35.22 who can then reach their parents. 00:12:35.25\00:12:37.12 This is why Child Impact is so important 00:12:37.15\00:12:39.12 because it provides children with the skills for life, 00:12:39.15\00:12:41.99 but also a relationship with Jesus. 00:12:42.02\00:12:44.46 Well, I'm just here with Mack the cameraman, 00:12:47.80\00:12:50.00 and we're going to go back to the village 00:12:50.03\00:12:52.27 and then back to Riverside. 00:12:52.30\00:12:54.20 And this has been pretty tough, pretty tough. 00:12:54.24\00:12:58.31 I mean, I'm going back to my air-conditioned room 00:12:58.34\00:13:01.04 and the cafeteria is going to feed me a meal. 00:13:01.08\00:13:04.08 And these people, they haven't got any food. 00:13:04.11\00:13:06.98 And that's reality. 00:13:07.02\00:13:09.08 And you really have to come here to feel it. 00:13:09.12\00:13:12.49 And the scary part is it's on such a huge scale. 00:13:12.52\00:13:17.79 But I'm just so excited, 00:13:17.83\00:13:19.16 we can do some little thing to help these families 00:13:19.19\00:13:22.26 and maybe we're going to have to find 00:13:22.30\00:13:23.70 a way of helping them with food. 00:13:23.73\00:13:25.23 We're expanding 00:13:43.39\00:13:44.72 our sponsorship program to Zambia, 00:13:44.75\00:13:47.16 and we're very excited to be partnering 00:13:47.19\00:13:49.79 with Riverside Farms, 00:13:49.82\00:13:51.59 who are well-known Adventist ministry. 00:13:51.63\00:13:54.50 They are opening a brand new primary school 00:13:54.53\00:13:57.20 and we're going to be sponsoring very needy children 00:13:57.23\00:14:00.70 to help them to come to an Adventist mission school. 00:14:00.74\00:14:04.01 We're really excited about it. 00:14:04.04\00:14:06.07 And you can either sponsor a child 00:14:06.11\00:14:08.41 or if you don't want that monthly commitment, 00:14:08.44\00:14:10.85 you can make a contribution to our unsponsored child fund. 00:14:10.88\00:14:15.25 This is an exciting time for us and our supporters. 00:14:15.28\00:14:18.82 And I just hope that you'll support 00:14:18.85\00:14:20.96 our new outreach 00:14:20.99\00:14:22.42 and our new education program in Zambia. 00:14:22.46\00:14:25.13
