Hi there. 00:00:03.90\00:00:05.23 I'm Jim Rennie, CEO of Child Impact International. 00:00:05.27\00:00:09.34 And I've got some exciting news about a new project in Zambia. 00:00:09.37\00:00:14.58 It's a unique new mission school opportunity 00:00:14.61\00:00:18.01 that will expand the Ministry 00:00:18.05\00:00:20.18 of our partner, Riverside Farms 00:00:20.22\00:00:23.25 through an expanded 00:00:23.28\00:00:24.62 Child Impact sponsorship program. 00:00:24.65\00:00:28.72 The Riverside Farm partnership with Child Impact International 00:00:28.76\00:00:33.50 allows for a great partnership 00:00:33.53\00:00:35.80 between two strong Adventist ministries. 00:00:35.83\00:00:40.17 Riverside Farm 00:00:40.20\00:00:41.64 provides a structured and well managed school project 00:00:41.67\00:00:46.01 with an Adventist education program. 00:00:46.04\00:00:48.88 While Child Impact provides poor children 00:00:48.91\00:00:52.35 an education and sharing key revenue 00:00:52.38\00:00:55.85 for the new school. 00:00:55.88\00:00:57.89 The government have approved the school 00:00:57.92\00:01:00.46 and it will be run by Riverside Farm management 00:01:00.49\00:01:03.89 on the same basis 00:01:03.93\00:01:05.53 that they run the current primary school. 00:01:05.56\00:01:09.26 The school will cover grades 8-12. 00:01:09.30\00:01:13.03 The school will be a day school 00:01:13.07\00:01:15.30 with lunch supplied for the students. 00:01:15.34\00:01:18.04 The approximate capacity will be 40 students per class 00:01:18.07\00:01:22.28 with 2 groups per day 00:01:22.31\00:01:24.71 since the classes are by subject 00:01:24.75\00:01:27.42 and not by grade. 00:01:27.45\00:01:29.22 The school will be located 00:01:29.25\00:01:30.85 300 meters from the current primary school. 00:01:30.89\00:01:34.82 Housing will be provided for the headmaster 00:01:34.86\00:01:37.96 and the deputy headmaster. 00:01:37.99\00:01:40.93 The need for education is strong, 00:01:40.96\00:01:43.50 and there is no Adventist Secondary School 00:01:43.53\00:01:45.80 in the area. 00:01:45.83\00:01:47.84 The school will allow the 150 primary school students 00:01:47.87\00:01:52.37 to expand their education. 00:01:52.41\00:01:54.84 Within the attendance of 300 students in the future, 00:01:54.88\00:01:59.11 sponsorship will grow to 150 plus. 00:01:59.15\00:02:03.49 The school will give the local needy children 00:02:03.52\00:02:06.76 an Adventist education 00:02:06.79\00:02:08.82 and will be a key outreach for Riverside Farms ministry. 00:02:08.86\00:02:13.70 ASI and donors have provided 00:02:13.73\00:02:16.20 one day buildings for the schools foundation 00:02:16.23\00:02:19.40 and construction of the base buildings. 00:02:19.43\00:02:22.30 Child Impact has been asked to complete the project 00:02:22.34\00:02:25.84 and furnish the school with furniture 00:02:25.87\00:02:28.98 and educational resources. 00:02:29.01\00:02:31.68 The need is $150,000. 00:02:31.71\00:02:35.55 We have some great news for this project. 00:02:35.58\00:02:38.35 We can double your donation. 00:02:38.39\00:02:41.12 Child Impact has matching funds for this project. 00:02:41.16\00:02:45.76 Each dollar given 00:02:45.79\00:02:47.30 will be matched with $1 to $75,000. 00:02:47.33\00:02:51.90 For each dollar you give 00:02:51.93\00:02:53.64 it will be matched dollar for dollar. 00:02:53.67\00:02:56.87 Why should you support Child Impact 00:02:56.91\00:02:59.57 and Riverside Farms in this project? 00:02:59.61\00:03:02.68 Let me explain. 00:03:02.71\00:03:04.25 It explains the mission average of Riverside Farms in Zambia. 00:03:04.28\00:03:10.45 It widens Child Impact's mission 00:03:10.49\00:03:13.42 in Zambia. 00:03:13.46\00:03:14.92 It will extend the sponsorship life 00:03:14.96\00:03:17.59 of the Child Impact children 00:03:17.63\00:03:19.96 already sponsored at the primary school. 00:03:20.00\00:03:23.06 It insures over 254 children 00:03:23.10\00:03:26.47 sponsored by Child Impact 00:03:26.50\00:03:28.74 will be given an Adventist education 00:03:28.77\00:03:31.67 through to grade 12 or higher. 00:03:31.71\00:03:34.38 It is valued for the donors funds, 00:03:34.41\00:03:36.98 as the school has a construction time 00:03:37.01\00:03:39.75 of less than 12 months. 00:03:39.78\00:03:42.38 There will be no cost overrun 00:03:42.42\00:03:44.69 as Child Impact on Riverside Farms, 00:03:44.72\00:03:47.72 guarantee the project costs. 00:03:47.76\00:03:51.03 And there's a proven project management team 00:03:51.06\00:03:53.66 at Riverside Farms led by Ellen Knowles, 00:03:53.70\00:03:57.40 who is well known for construction 00:03:57.43\00:04:00.04 of this type of one day buildings. 00:04:00.07\00:04:03.67 Please go online right now 00:04:03.71\00:04:05.57 for full information or to donate. 00:04:05.61\00:04:09.34 chidimpact.org is our website. 00:04:09.38\00:04:12.41 That's childimpact.org. 00:04:12.45\00:04:14.92 Or call us at 4239100667. 00:04:14.95\00:04:21.46 That's 4239100667. 00:04:21.49\00:04:27.03 I really want to thank you if you can join us 00:04:27.06\00:04:29.70 for this exciting project. 00:04:29.73\00:04:31.57 As a child growing up in Zambia, 00:04:44.21\00:04:45.61 more than likely you would be living 00:04:45.65\00:04:46.98 far below the poverty line. 00:04:47.02\00:04:48.92 Your parents are probably either copper miners 00:04:48.95\00:04:50.62 or farmers 00:04:50.65\00:04:51.99 and what determines if you can go to school 00:04:52.02\00:04:53.42 is the current price of copper or the weather. 00:04:53.46\00:04:55.89 If the crops fail, your family goes hungry 00:04:55.92\00:04:58.76 and you must focus on surviving. 00:04:58.79\00:05:00.76 All hopes of an education are gone. 00:05:00.80\00:05:02.93 This economic growth 00:05:08.70\00:05:10.04 hasn't helped their poverty line however, 00:05:10.07\00:05:12.07 the cities are growing well, 00:05:12.11\00:05:13.44 but the rural areas are stagnant. 00:05:13.48\00:05:16.78 They have few economic prospects 00:05:16.81\00:05:18.55 and with that, it limits the ability 00:05:18.58\00:05:20.28 for other works to exist 00:05:20.32\00:05:22.02 when the skills needed or too difficult to acquire. 00:05:22.05\00:05:26.12 Such skills require proper education 00:05:26.15\00:05:28.29 a resource that Zambia is desperately lacking. 00:05:28.32\00:05:31.96 Zambia is very isolated 00:05:31.99\00:05:33.50 and more so in the underdeveloped areas 00:05:33.53\00:05:35.33 of the country. 00:05:35.36\00:05:36.70 The people are struggling to make a living 00:05:36.73\00:05:38.07 as well as having the needed skills 00:05:38.10\00:05:39.70 to break free from their poverty. 00:05:39.73\00:05:43.37 Zambia's declining economy 00:05:43.41\00:05:44.74 causes about 60% of Zambians 00:05:44.77\00:05:46.81 to live under the nation's poverty line 00:05:46.84\00:05:49.94 with rural poverty standing at almost 78%. 00:05:49.98\00:05:54.32 You might be asking, 00:05:54.35\00:05:55.68 why is Child Impact expanding into Zambia. 00:05:55.72\00:05:59.25 Well, it's very simple. 00:05:59.29\00:06:00.69 We will have a partner on the ground 00:06:00.72\00:06:02.89 running the school 00:06:02.92\00:06:04.26 that is very, very reliable, and is mission focused. 00:06:04.29\00:06:08.83 We believe that all children are precious to God. 00:06:08.86\00:06:11.67 Our goal is to give hope 00:06:11.70\00:06:13.13 by fostering permanent positive change 00:06:13.17\00:06:15.27 in the lives of the disadvantaged children 00:06:15.30\00:06:17.51 of Zambia. 00:06:17.54\00:06:18.97 Central to our mission is building the infrastructure 00:06:19.01\00:06:21.51 of the local school 00:06:21.54\00:06:22.88 empowering it to meet the needs of its own community. 00:06:22.91\00:06:26.31 We see a need in Zambia 00:06:26.35\00:06:27.68 that can be met with the help of our sponsors. 00:06:27.72\00:06:30.15 We know that education is necessary 00:06:30.19\00:06:32.09 for the future of any community 00:06:32.12\00:06:33.56 to grow and improve their conditions. 00:06:33.59\00:06:35.92 Zambia desperately needs our help. 00:06:35.96\00:06:38.43 Riverside Farm is well known in the community 00:06:38.46\00:06:42.63 and will be able to do a great job 00:06:42.66\00:06:44.90 not only in running the school, 00:06:44.93\00:06:46.84 but administering the sponsorship program. 00:06:46.87\00:06:50.21 We also know that no funds will be wasted 00:06:50.24\00:06:53.68 and that they will be genuinely poor children, 00:06:53.71\00:06:56.81 that will be help. 00:06:56.85\00:06:58.18 Another challenge is that even existing schools 00:07:01.98\00:07:04.09 suffer from a lack of scholastic materials. 00:07:04.12\00:07:07.52 The lack of scholastic materials 00:07:07.56\00:07:08.99 is something few in the US can imagine. 00:07:09.02\00:07:11.99 A class of 50 pupils 00:07:12.03\00:07:13.40 often only have enough books for 10. 00:07:13.43\00:07:16.80 Drawing charts becoming possible 00:07:16.83\00:07:18.53 without pencil and paper. 00:07:18.57\00:07:20.50 It takes everything you have dipping into your own pocket, 00:07:20.54\00:07:23.37 knowing your meager income 00:07:23.41\00:07:24.74 you receive at the end of the month. 00:07:24.77\00:07:26.24 And even then it's never enough, 00:07:26.27\00:07:28.34 especially since most rural families 00:07:28.38\00:07:30.08 have to spend 60% of their money on food. 00:07:30.11\00:07:33.28 But there is a glimmer of hope. 00:07:33.31\00:07:36.58 My name is Craig Harding. 00:07:36.62\00:07:37.95 I'm the executive director here at Riverside Farm Institute. 00:07:37.99\00:07:40.96 And I manage the programs we do here and run the farm. 00:07:40.99\00:07:44.13 Well, I'm Pauline Knowles 00:07:44.16\00:07:45.49 and we're at Riverside Farm in Zambia, Africa. 00:07:45.53\00:07:49.20 The school program here has been really exciting 00:07:49.23\00:07:51.20 for the primary education program, 00:07:51.23\00:07:52.73 but 20 years ago, 00:07:52.77\00:07:55.00 the school buildings that are there, 00:07:55.04\00:07:57.17 were built 00:07:57.21\00:07:58.54 and we've been running the school there since. 00:07:58.57\00:08:01.74 In the district that we're in, 00:08:01.78\00:08:03.91 we get the highest success grade rate 00:08:03.95\00:08:07.22 for the students that are graduating on 00:08:07.25\00:08:08.95 to go to secondary school which is exciting for us. 00:08:08.98\00:08:11.65 Zambia's government 00:08:11.69\00:08:13.02 is struggling to meet the budget needs 00:08:13.05\00:08:14.49 of the growing population when it comes to education. 00:08:14.52\00:08:17.39 Schools in rural areas are suffering 00:08:17.43\00:08:19.23 with a lack of classrooms. 00:08:19.26\00:08:20.80 The main problem 00:08:20.83\00:08:22.16 is students continuing their education 00:08:22.20\00:08:23.87 past eighth grade. 00:08:23.90\00:08:25.23 Since fees are due after grade seven, 00:08:25.27\00:08:27.10 they tend to stop their education early 00:08:27.14\00:08:29.04 so schools can afford to add more classrooms. 00:08:29.07\00:08:31.64 If there are no fees in certain schools, 00:08:31.67\00:08:33.17 the children have to walk really far 00:08:33.21\00:08:34.98 in order to go to schools. 00:08:35.01\00:08:38.55 The families cannot even afford the basics 00:08:38.58\00:08:40.25 like uniform, books, and pencils. 00:08:40.28\00:08:42.62 It's hard to tell how many are and are not going to school. 00:08:42.65\00:08:45.99 We have found a major need in establishing schools 00:08:46.02\00:08:48.62 for the children in this country. 00:08:48.66\00:08:50.19 We are going to focus on the rural area 00:08:50.23\00:08:52.19 south of the capital to help this deprived region. 00:08:52.23\00:08:55.93 Attaining enough funding to help these children 00:08:55.96\00:08:57.83 is a vital part of the mission that still has to be done. 00:08:57.87\00:09:02.00 Funding will go to help these children attend school, 00:09:02.04\00:09:04.61 purchase academic materials 00:09:04.64\00:09:06.17 and better prepare them for the future. 00:09:06.21\00:09:09.54 Zambia is struggling but there is hope 00:09:09.58\00:09:11.61 through educating the next generation. 00:09:11.65\00:09:13.68 We decided to build a new school 00:09:13.72\00:09:15.68 because not only do we want to expand 00:09:15.72\00:09:18.39 but it's right in the middle of campus. 00:09:18.42\00:09:20.59 And with all these children there 00:09:20.62\00:09:22.09 it can be a little distracting at times. 00:09:22.12\00:09:24.83 And so now they have a nice setting 00:09:24.86\00:09:27.20 out in the woods in the wet, 00:09:27.23\00:09:29.76 there's trees and and it's out in nature. 00:09:29.80\00:09:33.03 And we're just excited 00:09:33.07\00:09:34.40 about having a different location 00:09:34.44\00:09:35.87 and to add more students to the school. 00:09:35.90\00:09:38.51 Now the school looks a little remote 00:09:38.54\00:09:40.28 when I first drove in 00:09:40.31\00:09:41.91 but in fact that's not far from the local villages 00:09:41.94\00:09:45.08 where the sponsor children can come from. 00:09:45.11\00:09:47.82 This is a great facility. 00:09:47.85\00:09:49.75 It's going to be well managed. 00:09:49.78\00:09:51.65 And it's a great opportunity for child sponsorship. 00:09:51.69\00:09:54.79 Riverside Farm 00:10:04.33\00:10:05.67 is a public benefit organization 00:10:05.70\00:10:07.10 here in Zambia, 00:10:07.14\00:10:08.47 we do a number of different projects, 00:10:08.50\00:10:10.84 including the farm that helps to promote the program. 00:10:10.87\00:10:14.78 We run a primary school, 00:10:14.81\00:10:16.91 we also do an adult training program 00:10:16.95\00:10:18.68 for people coming out of the village, 00:10:18.71\00:10:20.98 doing tailoring, agriculture and different programs. 00:10:21.02\00:10:24.82 We also run a wellness center, 00:10:24.85\00:10:26.69 helping people with different wellness 00:10:26.72\00:10:28.19 and health issues. 00:10:28.22\00:10:29.89 And we also run a farm program. 00:10:29.92\00:10:33.80 Well, we've been here for like 30 years now. 00:10:33.83\00:10:37.57 And how we got here was, 00:10:37.60\00:10:39.57 when my husband and I got married, 00:10:39.60\00:10:41.44 we thought, "Well, 00:10:41.47\00:10:42.80 if we just have a house of our own, 00:10:42.84\00:10:46.71 we'll be happy." 00:10:46.74\00:10:48.08 And then after we had a house, 00:10:48.11\00:10:49.44 "Well, if we just had our children," 00:10:49.48\00:10:51.08 then we had two boys. 00:10:51.11\00:10:52.61 And then after that, we started thinking, 00:10:52.65\00:10:54.72 but there's got to be more to life than this. 00:10:54.75\00:10:57.09 And so we just started praying about it. 00:10:57.12\00:10:59.15 And we ended up working 00:10:59.19\00:11:00.66 in a self-supporting institution 00:11:00.69\00:11:02.62 in the states and never dreamed 00:11:02.66\00:11:04.63 that we'd be asked to come to Africa. 00:11:04.66\00:11:06.76 But here we are. 00:11:06.80\00:11:09.93 The life of a missionary is very different 00:11:09.96\00:11:11.93 and often challenging, 00:11:11.97\00:11:13.30 but the rewards make it all worthwhile. 00:11:13.34\00:11:15.74 Riverside Farms works tirelessly 00:11:15.77\00:11:17.57 to be the hands and feet of Jesus. 00:11:17.61\00:11:20.11 Reaching out to the villages around them 00:11:20.14\00:11:22.24 to provide for their temporal and eternal needs. 00:11:22.28\00:11:25.65 The farm offers locals not only work 00:11:25.68\00:11:27.98 but valuable training in modern agricultural methods, 00:11:28.02\00:11:31.99 while the school gives their children 00:11:32.02\00:11:33.79 the opportunity to gain valuable skills 00:11:33.82\00:11:35.96 to not only improve their lives 00:11:35.99\00:11:37.63 but also the lives of those in their communities. 00:11:37.66\00:11:40.70 God is blessing their efforts 00:11:40.73\00:11:42.13 and the partnership with Child Impact 00:11:42.16\00:11:43.97 opens great possibilities for the future. 00:11:44.00\00:11:47.67 On opening day, the school will have 00:11:47.70\00:11:49.17 about 100 children. 00:11:49.20\00:11:51.77 And then it will be able to grow 00:11:51.81\00:11:53.34 to somewhere around 250 children 00:11:53.38\00:11:56.34 over the next year or two. 00:11:56.38\00:11:57.88 We're excited 00:11:57.91\00:11:59.25 about the Child Impact involvement 00:11:59.28\00:12:00.62 in the school 00:12:00.65\00:12:01.98 because there's a number of kids 00:12:02.02\00:12:03.62 who would otherwise have no educational opportunity 00:12:03.65\00:12:07.56 because their parents are small hold farmers. 00:12:07.59\00:12:09.82 And anytime there's a crop failure, 00:12:09.86\00:12:12.09 they have no food, 00:12:12.13\00:12:13.46 their families begin cutting trees 00:12:13.50\00:12:15.56 burning charcoal doing things just to survive 00:12:15.60\00:12:18.17 with no income for for them to have an education. 00:12:18.20\00:12:21.67 And then on years when there is rain, 00:12:21.70\00:12:24.74 they're still going hungry, 00:12:24.77\00:12:26.14 oftentimes coming up into the periods 00:12:26.17\00:12:28.74 where there's where there's crop harvest. 00:12:28.78\00:12:31.51 So this is an opportunity for them 00:12:31.55\00:12:33.45 to be able to better their lives 00:12:33.48\00:12:35.18 so that when their children come, 00:12:35.22\00:12:36.69 they're able to have a life that's not so dependent 00:12:36.72\00:12:39.55 on the unpredictability of rain in this arid region. 00:12:39.59\00:12:42.89 They can't afford to send them and they just stay home. 00:12:42.92\00:12:45.79 And so we are really excited that Child Impact has come 00:12:45.83\00:12:50.73 and they're going to help 00:12:50.77\00:12:52.10 some of these unfortunate children 00:12:52.13\00:12:53.54 be able to attend school. 00:12:53.57\00:12:55.47 Starting out, it would house around 150 students 00:12:55.50\00:12:58.67 but hopefully double and keep increasing 00:12:58.71\00:13:00.84 since there is such a high demand. 00:13:00.88\00:13:02.88 Because of this 00:13:02.91\00:13:04.25 Child Impact saw the need to go to Zambia, 00:13:04.28\00:13:05.98 the lack of money 00:13:06.01\00:13:07.35 makes this new school underutilized 00:13:07.38\00:13:09.62 because families can't afford 00:13:09.65\00:13:11.25 to take their students to school. 00:13:11.29\00:13:13.25 Helping with the students' financial needs 00:13:13.29\00:13:14.96 will guarantee they have materials 00:13:14.99\00:13:16.73 so they can focus on learning. 00:13:16.76\00:13:18.39 This will also alleviate the financial burdens 00:13:18.43\00:13:20.46 that families have, 00:13:20.50\00:13:21.83 which will allow them to buy food 00:13:21.86\00:13:23.40 and care for the basic needs of their family. 00:13:23.43\00:13:26.43 But most importantly, 00:13:26.47\00:13:27.80 this will provide the children 00:13:27.84\00:13:29.37 with a Christian Adventist education, 00:13:29.40\00:13:31.94 an education that will teach them 00:13:31.97\00:13:33.31 Bible truths that will help 00:13:33.34\00:13:34.68 further spread the gospel to this nation 00:13:34.71\00:13:36.75 that is poised to receive the truth. 00:13:36.78\00:13:38.95 Well, it's an exciting day 00:13:38.98\00:13:40.48 because for the first time I'm sitting in a classroom 00:13:40.52\00:13:43.18 in Africa, here in Zambia, 00:13:43.22\00:13:45.59 and we're at the Riverside Farms School. 00:13:45.62\00:13:48.42 And shortly they'll be moving into a new school 00:13:48.46\00:13:51.59 where we'll have over 50 sponsored children. 00:13:51.63\00:13:54.66 And I'm here with Daniel 00:13:54.70\00:13:56.23 and there'll be many children like him 00:13:56.26\00:13:58.57 that will be able to enjoy sponsorship. 00:13:58.60\00:14:01.24 You can sponsor a child 00:14:01.27\00:14:03.04 or you could help by just giving a contribution 00:14:03.07\00:14:06.47 to our unsponsored child fund. 00:14:06.51\00:14:09.31 This is a very exciting time for Child Impact 00:14:09.34\00:14:12.41 because we're really going to be 00:14:12.45\00:14:13.78 impacting on the real needy around Riverside Farms. 00:14:13.82\00:14:18.45 Your support will make a real difference, 00:14:18.49\00:14:20.99 either with sponsorship 00:14:21.02\00:14:22.52 or contributing to the unsponsored job fund. 00:14:22.56\00:14:25.53
