Hi, I'm Jim Rennie, 00:00:04.90\00:00:06.84 CEO of Child Impact International. 00:00:06.87\00:00:10.34 Our ministry operates in India, Bangladesh, 00:00:10.37\00:00:13.81 Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Zambia. 00:00:13.84\00:00:17.85 In these countries, the situation is grim. 00:00:17.88\00:00:21.98 The virus is spreading quickly 00:00:22.02\00:00:24.29 in densely populated poor villages 00:00:24.32\00:00:27.66 where there is no testing, 00:00:27.69\00:00:29.32 no medical help, and little government support. 00:00:29.36\00:00:33.73 Mission schools who were on a financial edge 00:00:33.76\00:00:36.63 before the pandemic now have no income. 00:00:36.67\00:00:40.74 Some staff are on reduced wages, 00:00:40.77\00:00:43.47 but many have not been paid for two months or longer. 00:00:43.51\00:00:47.71 Things are pretty tough. 00:00:47.74\00:00:50.81 We've had to look at our sponsorship program 00:00:50.85\00:00:53.82 to see how we can help the thousands we sponsor 00:00:53.85\00:00:57.22 who are at their homes right now. 00:00:57.25\00:01:00.12 If you sponsor a child with Child Impact, 00:01:00.16\00:01:03.39 please look for a letter in your mailbox 00:01:03.43\00:01:06.03 in the next few days, or go to our website 00:01:06.06\00:01:09.53 and see what we're doing 00:01:09.56\00:01:11.67 for the sponsored children in this time of crisis. 00:01:11.70\00:01:16.10 We have had to extend 00:01:16.14\00:01:17.77 the Coronavirus Emergency Rice and Health Appeal. 00:01:17.81\00:01:22.24 This appeal was originally to help 00:01:22.28\00:01:24.41 Adventist Mission boarding schools 00:01:24.45\00:01:26.92 in India and Bangladesh 00:01:26.95\00:01:29.05 as rice costs were rising. 00:01:29.08\00:01:31.72 When the pandemic struck, 00:01:31.75\00:01:33.46 we extended it to provide rice for mission schools 00:01:33.49\00:01:37.63 when they open and also soap and health education. 00:01:37.66\00:01:42.83 Now that the situation has got much worse, 00:01:42.86\00:01:45.70 with schools having no income, 00:01:45.73\00:01:48.07 some teachers and local ministers 00:01:48.10\00:01:51.14 are simply not being paid. 00:01:51.17\00:01:53.68 So from now on, 00:01:53.71\00:01:55.08 we want to tell you what the special fund will do. 00:01:55.11\00:01:59.51 It will ensure unpaid mission teachers 00:01:59.55\00:02:02.68 have food in this time of crisis. 00:02:02.72\00:02:06.19 We will do our best to send food relief 00:02:06.22\00:02:08.92 to our students at their homes. 00:02:08.96\00:02:12.36 We will ensure that 00:02:12.39\00:02:13.73 there are six-months supply of rice 00:02:13.76\00:02:16.26 for all mission boarding schools 00:02:16.30\00:02:18.53 when the schools open. 00:02:18.57\00:02:20.70 And likewise, we'll supply hand sanitizer 00:02:20.74\00:02:23.91 and health education when the schools open. 00:02:23.94\00:02:27.84 And if the appeal is successful, 00:02:27.88\00:02:30.05 we'll extend it to other schools in need, 00:02:30.08\00:02:33.05 and help unpaid pastors. 00:02:33.08\00:02:36.79 We're just so grateful for your support. 00:02:36.82\00:02:39.52 It's been overwhelming and I thank you. 00:02:39.55\00:02:42.52 But unfortunately, 00:02:42.56\00:02:43.89 we're being overwhelmed with requests. 00:02:43.93\00:02:46.49 So if you can help with one of these two appeals, 00:02:46.53\00:02:49.76 the first one, the Rice and Health Appeal, 00:02:49.80\00:02:53.23 that's the Rice and Health Appeal 00:02:53.27\00:02:55.94 or the Where Needed Most Fund, 00:02:55.97\00:02:58.94 that's the Where Needed Most Fund. 00:02:58.97\00:03:01.58 Please go to our website, childimpact.org. 00:03:01.61\00:03:07.12 We are very grateful. 00:03:07.15\00:03:10.19 I'm Jim Rennie, CEO of Child Impact International. 00:03:16.42\00:03:20.73 And I'm really excited that today, 00:03:20.76\00:03:23.83 we're able to sit down and talk to Stephanie Dawn. 00:03:23.87\00:03:27.80 Stephanie is a renowned singer. 00:03:27.84\00:03:31.37 Stephanie is blind, 00:03:31.41\00:03:32.84 but she is a great advocate of those with disability. 00:03:32.87\00:03:37.85 And more importantly, 00:03:37.88\00:03:39.75 so she's an ambassador for Child Impact. 00:03:39.78\00:03:43.85 She has been doing concerts 00:03:43.89\00:03:46.02 and fundraising and sharing the message 00:03:46.05\00:03:49.42 of our blind school in India. 00:03:49.46\00:03:52.03 So, Stephanie, welcome today. Thank you. 00:03:52.06\00:03:54.30 It's so good to be here. Yeah. 00:03:54.33\00:03:56.53 Tell us about yourself as a child? 00:03:56.56\00:03:59.00 Tell us about your blindness? 00:03:59.03\00:04:01.67 I was born totally blind 00:04:01.70\00:04:03.61 due to detached retina in both eyes. 00:04:03.64\00:04:06.74 And from a very young age, I loved music. 00:04:06.78\00:04:10.28 My mother, I had, when I was a toddler, 00:04:10.31\00:04:13.05 I had a little tiny cassette player 00:04:13.08\00:04:15.68 that I carried around with me 00:04:15.72\00:04:17.49 and listen to music on all the time 00:04:17.52\00:04:18.85 and my mom always made sure, 00:04:18.89\00:04:20.56 I had plenty of good music to listen to. 00:04:20.59\00:04:22.89 And I started singing at a very young age as well. 00:04:22.92\00:04:25.33 Music has been 00:04:25.36\00:04:27.20 a very, very crucial part of my life 00:04:27.23\00:04:31.20 for as long as I can remember. 00:04:31.23\00:04:33.13 And I received a very good education as well. 00:04:33.17\00:04:36.47 I knew what Braille was from toddlerhood on. 00:04:36.50\00:04:39.27 And I had all the Braille I needed 00:04:39.31\00:04:41.91 and all the technology I needed to, 00:04:41.94\00:04:44.51 to complete my studies 00:04:44.55\00:04:45.88 and to keep up with my sighted peers 00:04:45.91\00:04:48.18 all through the year. 00:04:48.22\00:04:49.55 So I was very blessed that way. 00:04:49.58\00:04:51.49 So you have formed a ministry, 00:04:51.52\00:04:53.89 Dawn of Hope Ministries 00:04:53.92\00:04:55.59 and you travel all over the country. 00:04:55.62\00:04:57.96 I'm amazed how much driving your family does. 00:04:57.99\00:05:01.83 So you travel with your family? Yes. 00:05:01.86\00:05:04.43 So tell us what role, 00:05:04.47\00:05:05.83 who they are and what role they play? 00:05:05.87\00:05:08.77 My stepfather is my pianist. 00:05:08.80\00:05:10.84 He has been my pianist since 1991. 00:05:10.87\00:05:13.74 So a very long time. 00:05:13.78\00:05:15.41 My mother travels with us as well. 00:05:15.44\00:05:18.51 She just helps me with anything I need. 00:05:18.55\00:05:20.65 She's an incredible, incredible source of support 00:05:20.68\00:05:24.89 just in any aspect that I need assistance with. 00:05:24.92\00:05:27.92 She's been there as a rock-solid support. 00:05:27.96\00:05:30.63 My grandmother is now traveling with us as well. 00:05:30.66\00:05:33.19 So the four of us travel together 00:05:33.23\00:05:35.70 around the United States presenting programs. 00:05:35.73\00:05:39.47 And we are just truly privileged 00:05:39.50\00:05:42.54 to now be presenting benefit programs 00:05:42.57\00:05:45.47 for the Child Impact International Blind School. 00:05:45.51\00:05:48.01 So you travel around the US? Yes. 00:05:48.04\00:05:51.91 You visit concert schools? 00:05:51.95\00:05:54.42 Tell me about what where you go and what you do? 00:05:54.45\00:05:57.12 Churches, camp meetings, 00:05:57.15\00:05:59.12 any venue where God has opened the door. 00:05:59.15\00:06:01.12 We've done women's ministries things. 00:06:01.16\00:06:04.06 In the past, we have also done things 00:06:04.09\00:06:06.76 for Lions Clubs and so forth. 00:06:06.80\00:06:09.76 We've done disability awareness programs at public 00:06:09.80\00:06:14.07 and Adventist schools over the years, 00:06:14.10\00:06:16.44 which have always 00:06:16.47\00:06:17.81 that the children absolutely love it. 00:06:17.84\00:06:19.21 I give them an opportunity. 00:06:19.24\00:06:21.08 Of course I sing, 00:06:21.11\00:06:22.44 but I give them an opportunity to, 00:06:22.48\00:06:24.31 to ask questions 00:06:24.35\00:06:25.68 and of course in a public school, 00:06:25.71\00:06:27.98 you know, just 50 hands up in the air 00:06:28.02\00:06:30.09 whenever I give them that opportunity. 00:06:30.12\00:06:32.62 And I like to give them that opportunity 00:06:32.65\00:06:34.56 because I want children to understand that 00:06:34.59\00:06:38.66 people with disabilities are approachable. 00:06:38.69\00:06:41.30 I will never forget one day when a child started to ask me 00:06:41.33\00:06:46.74 about my blindness, and his mother immediately 00:06:46.77\00:06:49.64 went shush and I understand that 00:06:49.67\00:06:53.04 parents don't want their children 00:06:53.07\00:06:55.48 to offend someone but at the same time, 00:06:55.51\00:06:58.78 when you do that, that's one of the worst things 00:06:58.81\00:07:00.55 you can possibly do, you know, 00:07:00.58\00:07:02.12 they develop this fear because of that, 00:07:02.15\00:07:04.59 oh, what if I say the wrong thing. 00:07:04.62\00:07:06.79 And, you know, I just really want children 00:07:06.82\00:07:11.33 to understand that disabled people are like them 00:07:11.36\00:07:14.43 that they have the same interest, 00:07:14.46\00:07:16.20 the same passions, the same goals, 00:07:16.23\00:07:18.97 the same desires in life 00:07:19.00\00:07:21.17 and that they are approachable 00:07:21.20\00:07:22.57 that you can talk with them 00:07:22.60\00:07:24.04 and develop relationships with them that 00:07:24.07\00:07:26.98 you don't have to have, have a fear of that. 00:07:27.01\00:07:30.51 You mentioned about Braille. 00:07:30.55\00:07:32.81 I guess you're seeing 00:07:32.85\00:07:34.58 a change in technology for blind people 00:07:34.62\00:07:38.29 those that it must be exciting to be alive. 00:07:38.32\00:07:42.09 I've seen you using your phone. 00:07:42.12\00:07:45.46 So technology must be changing for the blind. 00:07:45.49\00:07:48.76 In a very good way. 00:07:48.80\00:07:50.13 Yes, technology is even more necessary 00:07:50.17\00:07:53.87 for the visually impaired community 00:07:53.90\00:07:55.97 than even for sighted people. 00:07:56.00\00:07:57.87 When special technology came along, 00:07:57.91\00:08:00.01 it just threw open the doors of learning 00:08:00.04\00:08:03.31 for visually impaired people because now they had 00:08:03.35\00:08:05.95 all of the information at their fingertips 00:08:05.98\00:08:08.65 that sighted people had over the years. 00:08:08.68\00:08:10.82 I know at the blind school, we're exploring 00:08:10.85\00:08:13.39 some new technologies there right now. 00:08:13.42\00:08:16.12 Yes, that's one of the reasons 00:08:16.16\00:08:18.03 why it's so important for me to try 00:08:18.06\00:08:22.16 and raise money for the school 00:08:22.20\00:08:23.70 because of how crucial technology 00:08:23.73\00:08:26.87 is for blind people, 00:08:26.90\00:08:28.80 but also how expensive it is. 00:08:28.84\00:08:31.04 I mean, I received the technology 00:08:31.07\00:08:34.64 I needed over the years due to financial help. 00:08:34.68\00:08:38.18 But, of course, I grew up in a country 00:08:38.21\00:08:40.85 that is much more advanced 00:08:40.88\00:08:43.52 when it comes to their views of disabilities. 00:08:43.55\00:08:46.76 And so, of course, in this country, 00:08:46.79\00:08:48.26 people with disabilities are much more integrated. 00:08:48.29\00:08:51.23 There is not nearly as much of a stigma in that regard. 00:08:51.26\00:08:56.80 And schools are able or strive to, 00:08:56.83\00:09:01.84 to promote or provide the technology 00:09:01.87\00:09:04.87 that blind people need, 00:09:04.91\00:09:06.54 blind children need in order to succeed in school. 00:09:06.57\00:09:09.68 And I am very aware that other children 00:09:09.71\00:09:13.82 who are blind in other parts of the world 00:09:13.85\00:09:15.78 do not receive that. 00:09:15.82\00:09:17.15 In fact, I remember talking to someone 00:09:17.19\00:09:18.55 in Africa on Facebook 00:09:18.59\00:09:20.49 and he said to me, "You know, in my country, 00:09:20.52\00:09:23.02 people like you don't make it to their Promised Land, 00:09:23.06\00:09:26.56 they end up begging on the streets." 00:09:26.59\00:09:28.93 And, so that's why the school in India 00:09:28.96\00:09:30.83 is so important to me 00:09:30.87\00:09:32.20 because it just thrills me to see them. 00:09:32.23\00:09:36.74 The communities that they have come from, 00:09:36.77\00:09:39.97 and being able to receive spiritually 00:09:40.01\00:09:43.01 and academically what I received 00:09:43.04\00:09:47.08 and I want to do everything I can to, for that to, 00:09:47.12\00:09:52.35 to continue happening in their lives, 00:09:52.39\00:09:53.96 because, you know, 00:09:53.99\00:09:55.32 when I look back at my life, sure, 00:09:55.36\00:09:56.69 there were challenges, 00:09:56.73\00:09:58.39 but when I started doing fundraisers for the school 00:09:58.43\00:10:02.33 and I learned more 00:10:02.36\00:10:03.70 about the conditions 00:10:03.73\00:10:05.10 that these children are in the difficult 00:10:05.13\00:10:08.67 and often horrific experiences 00:10:08.70\00:10:10.71 they have been through because of their blindness. 00:10:10.74\00:10:13.21 It really makes the challenges 00:10:13.24\00:10:14.94 that I've experienced quite small. 00:10:14.98\00:10:17.48 It's tough growing up as a child in these villages, 00:10:17.51\00:10:22.08 but if you're visually impaired 00:10:22.12\00:10:23.82 or you're deaf, or you've got 00:10:23.85\00:10:25.95 any other disability challenge, 00:10:25.99\00:10:29.86 they simply don't know how to deal with it. 00:10:29.89\00:10:34.46 The parents, there is stigma attached. 00:10:34.50\00:10:38.20 And so, we give hope, 00:10:38.23\00:10:43.71 and there's some amazing stories 00:10:43.74\00:10:48.31 at that
