Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:02.50\00:00:05.20 that gives hope and fosters permanent, 00:00:05.23\00:00:07.54 positive change in the lives 00:00:07.57\00:00:09.10 of disadvantaged children and their communities. 00:00:09.14\00:00:13.34 Countries include Zambia, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, 00:00:13.38\00:00:17.98 Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. 00:00:18.01\00:00:20.72 Child Impact's investment in the lives 00:00:20.75\00:00:22.65 of more than 3,500 children 00:00:22.68\00:00:24.95 continues to yield infinite returns. 00:00:24.99\00:00:27.82 Outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:27.86\00:00:30.26 to providing an education 00:00:30.29\00:00:31.69 and a home for deaf and blind children and orphans. 00:00:31.73\00:00:35.33 Above all, Child Impact's sponsors 00:00:35.36\00:00:38.13 give hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:00:38.17\00:00:40.84 If you were to visit Bangladesh, 00:00:59.29\00:01:00.99 you would see 00:01:01.02\00:01:02.36 that it is a country rich in history, 00:01:02.39\00:01:04.73 culture and natural beauty. 00:01:04.76\00:01:07.73 But those who live there have little time to enjoy it. 00:01:07.76\00:01:11.53 Due to economic challenges, 00:01:11.57\00:01:13.37 most of the people have to focus on working 00:01:13.40\00:01:15.40 as much as they can 00:01:15.44\00:01:16.77 in order to put food on the table. 00:01:16.81\00:01:20.38 Families with both parents struggle, 00:01:20.41\00:01:22.68 but if one parent leaves or dies, 00:01:22.71\00:01:25.08 the rest of the family suffers even more. 00:01:25.11\00:01:29.35 That is where organizations like Child Impact 00:01:29.38\00:01:32.15 offer children in these situations hope. 00:01:32.19\00:01:36.12 Today, we will be hearing from two people, 00:01:36.16\00:01:38.59 a current student and a former student 00:01:38.63\00:01:41.16 about the change that sponsorship has had 00:01:41.20\00:01:43.53 on their lives. 00:01:43.57\00:01:45.83 On our trip to Bangladesh, 00:01:45.87\00:01:47.27 we had a guy that helped us every step of the way. 00:01:47.30\00:01:49.90 His name was Shohag. 00:01:49.94\00:01:51.51 He helped us find students to interview 00:01:51.54\00:01:53.24 and would translate what they said 00:01:53.27\00:01:54.94 when they couldn't speak English. 00:01:54.98\00:01:56.71 Jim Rennie from Child Impact sat down with Shohag 00:01:56.75\00:01:59.25 to learn more about him. 00:01:59.28\00:02:01.08 Today, I'm going to have a chat with Shohag Boidya. 00:02:01.12\00:02:04.09 Shohag is our sponsorship manager 00:02:04.12\00:02:07.76 in Bangladesh. 00:02:07.79\00:02:09.36 And over the years, 00:02:09.39\00:02:11.06 I've got to know him fairly well. 00:02:11.09\00:02:13.70 And I can tell you 00:02:13.73\00:02:15.06 that he's a very committed hard worker. 00:02:15.10\00:02:18.73 But today, we want to find out a little bit more about him. 00:02:18.77\00:02:22.54 And, Shohag, 00:02:22.57\00:02:24.27 how long have you been doing this job? 00:02:24.31\00:02:26.74 I am doing now is 11 years. 00:02:26.78\00:02:29.44 Eleven years? 00:02:29.48\00:02:30.81 Wow. 00:02:30.85\00:02:32.18 So let's talk about your earlier days. 00:02:32.21\00:02:35.38 Tell us about your mother, and father, and your family? 00:02:35.42\00:02:39.69 So my father is a mission worker, 00:02:39.72\00:02:44.69 and working in the Sonapur village school. 00:02:44.73\00:02:47.70 And when I was born that time, 00:02:47.73\00:02:52.27 that village robber attacked my father and he died. 00:02:52.30\00:02:57.21 And then one of our pioneer mission workers, 00:02:57.24\00:03:00.64 they took us, me and my brother to the KKMS Orphanage, 00:03:00.68\00:03:05.98 and I grew over there. 00:03:06.01\00:03:08.08 And as time passed and after 10 years, 00:03:08.12\00:03:13.32 my elder brother died in the school somehow. 00:03:13.36\00:03:16.29 That's sad. 00:03:16.32\00:03:17.66 And my mother, she is young lady, 00:03:17.69\00:03:22.40 and she sacrificed her life for me to grow up 00:03:22.43\00:03:26.63 and get the education and study. 00:03:26.67\00:03:29.97 And now, this is our contribution. 00:03:30.01\00:03:32.91 I am here standing in front of you. 00:03:32.94\00:03:34.54 Wow. Wow. 00:03:34.58\00:03:37.71 It is heartbreaking to realize that Shohag's past 00:03:37.75\00:03:40.45 is one that most children in Bangladesh 00:03:40.48\00:03:42.82 are currently living. 00:03:42.85\00:03:44.49 Approximately a third of the 160 million people 00:03:44.52\00:03:48.06 living in Bangladesh are children. 00:03:48.09\00:03:50.26 With proportionally fewer adults 00:03:50.29\00:03:51.99 to take care of the children, 00:03:52.03\00:03:53.36 they often have little hope for the future. 00:03:53.40\00:03:56.90 In spite of these dire statistics, 00:03:56.93\00:03:59.03 Shohag has been able to use the gift of sponsorship 00:03:59.07\00:04:02.07 to have a better life. 00:04:02.10\00:04:03.91 And you have a family? 00:04:03.94\00:04:05.27 Tell us about your family? 00:04:05.31\00:04:06.64 Yeah, I have family. 00:04:06.68\00:04:08.01 I have my wife and my two daughters. 00:04:08.04\00:04:11.38 One daughter is nine years old and another is five plus. 00:04:11.41\00:04:15.62 Both are growing fast, 00:04:15.65\00:04:17.42 and they are attending school in Dhaka. 00:04:17.45\00:04:19.89 We live in Dhaka in the union office. 00:04:19.92\00:04:22.66 Okay. 00:04:22.69\00:04:24.03 Shohag is not the only person to have his life changed 00:04:24.06\00:04:26.70 for the better by Child Impact. 00:04:26.73\00:04:29.06 While visiting SAMS, 00:04:29.10\00:04:30.43 Jim Rennie got to sit down with one of the students. 00:04:30.47\00:04:33.57 So we're here at SAMS Seminary in Bangladesh, 00:04:33.60\00:04:38.04 and today we're going to meet another Child Impact student. 00:04:38.07\00:04:44.51 She doesn't speak a lot of English, 00:04:44.55\00:04:46.08 she speaks Bangla 00:04:46.11\00:04:47.58 and I don't speak much Bangla. 00:04:47.62\00:04:49.28 So we're going to ask her some questions about family 00:04:49.32\00:04:54.59 and what she wants to accomplish in life. 00:04:54.62\00:04:58.66 So what is your name? 00:04:58.69\00:05:01.16 My name is Sita Mumu. 00:05:01.20\00:05:02.83 Sita Mumu, and how old are you? 00:05:02.86\00:05:05.77 Sixteen. 00:05:05.80\00:05:07.14 Sixteen. Okay. 00:05:07.17\00:05:08.50 So tell me about your family? 00:05:08.54\00:05:11.27 Do you enjoy being at the school? 00:05:36.73\00:05:38.77 Are you happy at the school? 00:05:38.80\00:05:40.37 Yes. 00:05:40.40\00:05:41.74 Yes. 00:05:41.77\00:05:43.10 And what do you want to do when you grow up, 00:05:43.14\00:05:45.44 when you get older? 00:05:45.47\00:05:46.81 What do you want to be? 00:05:46.84\00:05:48.18 A teacher, okay, that's great. 00:05:51.91\00:05:54.68 So here's a young lady that lost her father 00:05:54.72\00:05:57.19 at an early age and thanks to her aunty, 00:05:57.22\00:05:59.59 she was introduced to the school 00:05:59.62\00:06:01.86 and now the family have been given hope 00:06:01.89\00:06:03.99 with sponsorship. 00:06:04.03\00:06:05.59 If it wasn't for her loving family 00:06:05.63\00:06:07.33 and the opportunity of sponsorship, 00:06:07.36\00:06:09.86 Sita Mumu story could be very different. 00:06:09.90\00:06:13.47 Children of impoverished families 00:06:13.50\00:06:15.07 are often sold by their parents 00:06:15.10\00:06:17.01 who hope that they will be fed 00:06:17.04\00:06:18.47 and cared for better than they are able to do. 00:06:18.51\00:06:21.54 But these children are rarely in a better situation. 00:06:21.58\00:06:25.28 Most have to live and work in the streets. 00:06:25.31\00:06:28.15 For girls, they often start out as domestic servants. 00:06:28.18\00:06:31.62 But as they get older, 00:06:31.65\00:06:32.99 they are forced into prostitution. 00:06:33.02\00:06:35.72 For poor children in Bangladesh, 00:06:35.76\00:06:37.23 sponsorship is their only hope. 00:06:37.26\00:06:41.23 I just want you to tell me 00:06:41.26\00:06:43.67 how important is sponsorship to these children? 00:06:43.70\00:06:49.74 This is a really huge impact on the children. 00:06:49.77\00:06:53.64 You can see, in my life, 00:06:53.68\00:06:55.84 in full of my life I got the sponsorship. 00:06:55.88\00:06:58.61 And I get education, and I am graduated. 00:06:58.65\00:07:01.88 Now I'm serving children. 00:07:01.92\00:07:04.85 Same time, children have three times meal 00:07:04.89\00:07:09.09 in boarding school, they get education. 00:07:09.12\00:07:11.53 Even this is the big impact for their families also. 00:07:11.56\00:07:15.73 Some of the parents very poor, 00:07:15.76\00:07:17.77 even they don't have work every day. 00:07:17.80\00:07:20.07 But most of them are day laborers 00:07:20.10\00:07:22.44 in different work. 00:07:22.47\00:07:24.11 So this is the big help and big impact, 00:07:24.14\00:07:26.68 in the child life and also in their family. 00:07:26.71\00:07:32.35 How many children do you manage? 00:07:32.38\00:07:34.48 We manage over 3,200 students. 00:07:34.52\00:07:41.46 Three thousand two hundred? 00:07:41.49\00:07:43.46 We have four field managers and I am supervising them. 00:07:43.49\00:07:48.23 And we have big and small, around 10 partners. 00:07:48.26\00:07:53.80 Right. Yeah. 00:07:53.84\00:07:55.17 Do you know how many children there are 00:07:55.20\00:07:57.11 in Adventist Mission schools? 00:07:57.14\00:07:58.74 Yeah. 00:07:58.77\00:08:00.34 All of them are in mission school 00:08:00.38\00:08:01.84 and many of them graduated. 00:08:01.88\00:08:04.31 And some of them get job inside the church 00:08:04.35\00:08:07.48 and some of them go outside doing some work 00:08:07.52\00:08:10.25 in the private organization. 00:08:10.29\00:08:13.12 Some are working in NGOs, 00:08:13.15\00:08:15.26 and also some of them working in government office also. 00:08:15.29\00:08:19.73 So how big is the school system in Bangladesh? 00:08:19.76\00:08:24.63 It is a big school. 00:08:24.67\00:08:27.40 We have seven boarding schools, like SAMS, 00:08:27.44\00:08:31.67 and including one college, 00:08:31.71\00:08:33.91 and we have around 100 village schools. 00:08:33.94\00:08:38.15 Hundred village schools? 00:08:38.18\00:08:39.51 And we in total we have more than 7,500 students. 00:08:39.55\00:08:44.89 Also we have 11 Adventist Mission schools 00:08:44.92\00:08:48.19 around the cities. 00:08:48.22\00:08:50.86 So you say you have four field officers. 00:08:50.89\00:08:54.30 Just tell us, what does the field officer do? 00:08:54.33\00:08:56.80 Just very quickly, 00:08:56.83\00:08:58.17 what does the field officer's role? 00:08:58.20\00:09:00.74 The field officer main role is to check the roll call, 00:09:00.77\00:09:04.91 and prepare the new application. 00:09:04.94\00:09:07.74 They prepare the photograph. 00:09:07.78\00:09:09.74 They do collecting the thanks letters, 00:09:09.78\00:09:13.31 translating even, 00:09:13.35\00:09:15.35 they collect Christmas cards, distribute gifts, 00:09:15.38\00:09:19.09 and also check other school like, office supplies, 00:09:19.12\00:09:22.72 and other activities they do. 00:09:22.76\00:09:25.06 They travel in the village schools also. 00:09:25.09\00:09:27.83 This is their big role to handle all village schools. 00:09:27.86\00:09:31.73 Right. 00:09:31.77\00:09:33.10 So the field officers in all the countries 00:09:33.13\00:09:35.24 where we have children 00:09:35.27\00:09:36.84 are very key to the success of the organization 00:09:36.87\00:09:40.44 both in checking the children. 00:09:40.48\00:09:41.98 Now they're getting feedback with letters and APRs. 00:09:42.01\00:09:46.65 In the team that works with Shohag, 00:09:46.68\00:09:49.62 we also handle our projects. 00:09:49.65\00:09:52.22 And starting now at KMMS School, 00:09:52.25\00:09:55.92 we have a very large building project, 00:09:55.96\00:09:59.16 and the critical thing for us is to have people on the ground 00:09:59.19\00:10:03.47 that we can trust that we can work with. 00:10:03.50\00:10:06.60 And I guess 00:10:06.63\00:10:08.07 over the last four or five years, 00:10:08.10\00:10:10.41 I've got to know these guys personally. 00:10:10.44\00:10:13.01 I see them as my friends. 00:10:13.04\00:10:15.04 I see them as my work colleagues, 00:10:15.08\00:10:17.28 and I see them as our partners. 00:10:17.31\00:10:19.51 And so for us, 00:10:19.55\00:10:20.92 to ensure that the donor's money 00:10:20.95\00:10:23.32 is being well spent, 00:10:23.35\00:10:25.19 it's critical 00:10:25.22\00:10:27.26 that we have good support on the ground. 00:10:27.29\00:10:29.79 And here in Bangladesh, we have that 00:10:29.82\00:10:33.29 and we are grateful to the workers here. 00:10:33.33\00:10:36.73 But we're also grateful to the donors. 00:10:36.77\00:10:39.23 And by bringing the two together, 00:10:39.27\00:10:41.14 we can ensure value for the donors. 00:10:41.17\00:10:45.37 For those children who are lucky enough 00:10:45.41\00:10:46.94 to be sponsored, 00:10:46.98\00:10:48.31 they can look forward to a future 00:10:48.34\00:10:49.74 where they can live in a safe environment, 00:10:49.78\00:10:52.41 in environment where their immediate needs 00:10:52.45\00:10:54.38 will be taken care of. 00:10:54.42\00:10:55.85 And through education, 00:10:55.88\00:10:57.35 they will be empowered to help not only themselves, 00:10:57.39\00:11:01.06 but also others. 00:11:01.09\00:11:03.43 There is a very different future 00:11:03.46\00:11:04.83 for those that are not sponsored. 00:11:04.86\00:11:08.10 Shohag, tell us about some children 00:11:08.13\00:11:12.13 who can't get into a boarding school, 00:11:12.17\00:11:14.50 who can't get into an orphanage. 00:11:14.54\00:11:17.77 What's the sad thing that could happen? 00:11:17.81\00:11:20.41 What's the bad impact that could happen? 00:11:20.44\00:11:23.68 So the bad impact of their families and life 00:11:23.71\00:11:27.58 that they will definitely 00:11:27.62\00:11:34.16 addicted into smoking, drinking, 00:11:34.19\00:11:37.09 and they don't get to the school. 00:11:37.13\00:11:39.86 They don't go to the school, even they do other work. 00:11:39.89\00:11:43.83 And they will not have bright future. 00:11:43.87\00:11:46.20 They don't have the education. 00:11:46.23\00:11:49.47 Yeah. 00:11:49.50\00:11:50.84 Yeah, we visited a village the other day 00:11:50.87\00:11:53.51 and there was a solo mom, 00:11:53.54\00:11:56.71 and she's having a challenge with her 10-year old boy. 00:11:56.75\00:12:00.15 Because he can go into the field sometimes 00:12:00.18\00:12:02.32 and earn some money, doesn't have to go to school, 00:12:02.35\00:12:05.69 and she was very distraught as if we could help her. 00:12:05.72\00:12:09.39 And so, children, as we're driving along, 00:12:09.42\00:12:13.76 you see the brickworks and you see the children, 00:12:13.80\00:12:16.77 and the brickworks are a place where children are exploited. 00:12:16.80\00:12:20.97 And so, we're just so excited 00:12:21.00\00:12:23.34 that we can give some children hope 00:12:23.37\00:12:25.84 and through sponsorship, that's what happens. 00:12:25.87\00:12:29.54 We are very reliant on people like Shohag. 00:12:29.58\00:12:33.58 And what makes the big difference 00:12:33.62\00:12:35.42 that some of them 00:12:35.45\00:12:36.79 have actually been sponsored children. 00:12:36.82\00:12:39.15 Some of them have had to come through the orphanage, 00:12:39.19\00:12:42.09 and so they have a passion. 00:12:42.12\00:12:43.89 And I know that Shohag 00:12:43.93\00:12:45.26 and most of the staff in Bangladesh 00:12:45.29\00:12:48.36 have a real passion, 00:12:48.40\00:12:49.90 and we're very excited that they partner with us. 00:12:49.93\00:12:53.87 And we're very excited that we can sponsor children 00:12:53.90\00:12:57.81 and that you the sponsors can make a difference. 00:12:57.84\00:13:02.84 While the need for sponsorship is still large, 00:13:02.88\00:13:05.61 the difference that every sponsor makes 00:13:05.65\00:13:07.82 is it changed life, 00:13:07.85\00:13:09.18 a life that doesn't have to live 00:13:09.22\00:13:10.55 on the streets, 00:13:10.59\00:13:11.92 a life that could find hope even in the shadow of loss. 00:13:11.95\00:13:16.06 Sponsorship may not be able to change the world, 00:13:16.09\00:13:18.93 but it does change the world 00:13:18.96\00:13:20.60 for one of God's precious children. 00:13:20.63\00:13:23.10
