Hi, 00:00:03.47\00:00:04.80 welcome to the Child Impact television program 00:00:04.83\00:00:07.60 Hope in Motion 00:00:07.64\00:00:09.10 which is showing our work in Bangladesh. 00:00:09.14\00:00:13.04 I just wanted to share with you before the program, 00:00:13.07\00:00:16.44 our current status with our work 00:00:16.48\00:00:18.58 in many countries. 00:00:18.61\00:00:20.58 In India, Bangladesh and Myanmar, 00:00:20.62\00:00:23.39 it is currently the school holidays. 00:00:23.42\00:00:26.12 And although the government has closed the schools, 00:00:26.15\00:00:29.19 in fact that would have been a holiday at this time. 00:00:29.22\00:00:32.49 I have to be honest with you, 00:00:32.53\00:00:34.30 we don't know when they will reopen. 00:00:34.33\00:00:37.10 And we are monitoring that very, very carefully. 00:00:37.13\00:00:42.10 Our focus at the moment 00:00:42.14\00:00:44.14 is ensuring that the schools open properly 00:00:44.17\00:00:47.68 and focus to ensure us that they have food 00:00:47.71\00:00:50.85 and that they have health supplies 00:00:50.88\00:00:53.11 for when they open. 00:00:53.15\00:00:55.08 Many of the families are struggling 00:00:55.12\00:00:57.35 back in the villages 00:00:57.39\00:00:59.02 and it is very, very difficult for us to contact them. 00:00:59.05\00:01:03.39 And we are monitoring the situation 00:01:03.43\00:01:06.46 very, very carefully, 00:01:06.49\00:01:08.36 as it varies from country to country. 00:01:08.40\00:01:12.37 I just want to thank you for your support. 00:01:12.40\00:01:14.64 And I also want to tell you 00:01:14.67\00:01:16.50 that this series was filmed before the pandemic. 00:01:16.54\00:01:20.64 And it shows the challenges 00:01:20.68\00:01:24.11 and the excitement that we praise 00:01:24.15\00:01:26.21 for our work in Bangladesh. 00:01:26.25\00:01:28.48 I just want to thank you for your support. 00:01:28.52\00:01:31.39 It's been overwhelming, and we are very, very grateful, 00:01:31.42\00:01:35.66 the kids are grateful. 00:01:35.69\00:01:37.63 And if you want to help us, 00:01:37.66\00:01:40.03 I have to be honest 00:01:40.06\00:01:41.40 that our where needed most fund, 00:01:41.43\00:01:43.50 and also our blind there from orphans run 00:01:43.53\00:01:47.10 currently could do with some funds. 00:01:47.14\00:01:50.04 But we are grateful that the Lord has blessed us 00:01:50.07\00:01:53.11 and I just hope 00:01:53.14\00:01:54.48 that you will enjoy this program 00:01:54.51\00:01:56.41 about Child Impact work in Bangladesh. 00:01:56.44\00:01:59.75 A school's mission is far from singular, 00:02:10.86\00:02:13.53 not dedicated to a single course of action 00:02:13.56\00:02:15.96 or problem to be remedied. 00:02:16.00\00:02:17.57 In most cases to simply educate a child 00:02:17.60\00:02:19.53 is not enough. 00:02:19.57\00:02:21.00 This is true everywhere 00:02:21.04\00:02:22.37 but even more so in developing countries 00:02:22.40\00:02:24.21 where the needs of a child are so dire and broad. 00:02:24.24\00:02:27.88 An example of this broadening of a school's objectives 00:02:27.91\00:02:30.11 can be found in Bangladesh, 00:02:30.15\00:02:31.68 where Seventh-day Adventist Maranatha Seminary, 00:02:31.71\00:02:34.05 an Adventist Mission School of 800 students is located. 00:02:34.08\00:02:38.19 For a mission school in the country 00:02:38.22\00:02:39.55 facing extreme poverty, two more objectives are key. 00:02:39.59\00:02:43.22 The first is to share the message of Christ 00:02:43.26\00:02:45.16 with an unfamiliar population of young people. 00:02:45.19\00:02:48.10 The second and perhaps equally challenging 00:02:48.13\00:02:50.37 is to elevate the standard of living 00:02:50.40\00:02:51.83 of the children who study there. 00:02:51.87\00:02:53.23 The economy creates barriers to education 00:02:58.47\00:03:00.68 for many children in Northwestern Bangladesh. 00:03:00.71\00:03:04.18 If a child's parents are so poor 00:03:04.21\00:03:06.08 that they must use their child for economic purposes, 00:03:06.11\00:03:09.08 such as arranged marriage or child labor, 00:03:09.12\00:03:11.19 their shot at education disappears. 00:03:11.22\00:03:14.56 If a child is too far 00:03:14.59\00:03:15.92 from traditional educational outlets 00:03:15.96\00:03:17.33 or cannot leave the home for other reasons, 00:03:17.36\00:03:19.36 once again they lose out on a chance to learn. 00:03:19.39\00:03:22.63 Sponsoring students allows them to overcome 00:03:22.66\00:03:24.87 both of these barriers 00:03:24.90\00:03:26.23 and place them in an environment 00:03:26.27\00:03:27.60 where they're fed, 00:03:27.64\00:03:28.97 housed and able to focus on their studies 00:03:29.00\00:03:31.04 in safety and peace. 00:03:31.07\00:03:34.34 But more central to the whole process 00:03:34.38\00:03:36.04 removing these barriers and placing students 00:03:36.08\00:03:38.01 in a positive boarding school environment 00:03:38.05\00:03:39.51 is only one part 00:03:39.55\00:03:40.88 of how the school aims 00:03:40.92\00:03:42.25 to affect the lives of its students. 00:03:42.28\00:03:46.49 Another significant part 00:03:46.52\00:03:47.86 is opening opportunities for students 00:03:47.89\00:03:49.49 as they reach adulthood, 00:03:49.52\00:03:50.93 which allows them to break the cycle of poverty 00:03:50.96\00:03:52.96 and elevate their communities. 00:03:52.99\00:03:54.86 In this episode, 00:03:54.90\00:03:56.23 we learn the stories of several former students 00:03:56.26\00:03:58.10 of Seventh-day Adventist Maranatha Seminary 00:03:58.13\00:04:00.20 or SAMS 00:04:00.24\00:04:01.74 and see the impact that quality, 00:04:01.77\00:04:03.74 faith centered education has had on their careers 00:04:03.77\00:04:07.08 and their ability to serve others. 00:04:07.11\00:04:10.68 After the Child Impact team arrived at SAMS, 00:04:10.71\00:04:13.42 they met the faculty 00:04:13.45\00:04:14.78 and surveyed the conditions around campus. 00:04:14.82\00:04:16.25 The stories of several different SAMS' alumni 00:04:16.28\00:04:18.25 came to light 00:04:18.29\00:04:19.62 and Child Impact CEO Jim Rennie 00:04:19.65\00:04:21.22 made sure to sit down with each of them 00:04:21.26\00:04:22.92 and learn more about their stories. 00:04:22.96\00:04:25.69 The first story we encountered was actually two, 00:04:25.73\00:04:28.20 but to paraphrase the Book of Genesis, 00:04:28.23\00:04:29.70 the stories had long since become one. 00:04:29.73\00:04:33.60 We got another interview, 00:04:33.64\00:04:35.50 but this time it's with a couple 00:04:35.54\00:04:38.21 who work here at SAMS College. 00:04:38.24\00:04:41.64 And, in fact, the lady was here as a student 00:04:41.68\00:04:46.08 when this college was built. 00:04:46.11\00:04:49.98 So as well as finding out about them and what they do, 00:04:50.02\00:04:54.16 we're going to find out 00:04:54.19\00:04:55.52 about when the college was built. 00:04:55.56\00:04:58.29 So good morning. Good morning. 00:04:58.33\00:05:01.26 So tell me your name. 00:05:01.30\00:05:03.67 I am Mrs. Putoi Pronoti Toppo. 00:05:03.70\00:05:06.87 Right. My name is Prodip Toppo. 00:05:06.90\00:05:08.80 Okay. 00:05:08.84\00:05:10.17 And tell me what do you do in Bangla? 00:05:10.21\00:05:13.17 And you, a teacher? 00:05:22.18\00:05:23.59 Tell us, you were a student. 00:05:33.40\00:05:36.13 How long were you a student at the school? 00:05:36.16\00:05:38.57 So were you at the school 00:05:47.34\00:05:50.15 when Mr. McNeilus family built this school, 00:05:50.18\00:05:53.11 were you here? 00:05:53.15\00:05:54.48 Yes. 00:05:54.52\00:05:55.85 So you were a student? Yeah, I am a student. 00:05:55.88\00:05:57.55 At that time I was a student. Right. 00:05:57.59\00:05:59.35 So you saw all these buildings go up? 00:05:59.39\00:06:02.22 Yeah. 00:06:02.26\00:06:03.59 And when did you come? Were you a student here? 00:06:03.63\00:06:06.29 Yeah. Yes. 00:06:06.33\00:06:07.66 You met here? 00:06:20.81\00:06:22.14 Yeah. Yes, yes. 00:06:22.18\00:06:23.98 And you have family? Yes. 00:06:24.01\00:06:26.58 What children do you have? Two children, daughter. 00:06:26.61\00:06:30.05 We have two daughters. 00:06:30.09\00:06:31.85 You have been here a long time you have seen the school? 00:06:31.89\00:06:34.99 Yes. 00:06:35.02\00:06:36.36 So you must have seen many students? 00:06:36.39\00:06:38.23 Yes. 00:06:38.26\00:06:39.63 Do you see the difference 00:06:39.66\00:06:41.96 it make to other students learning well? 00:06:42.00\00:06:44.77 A wide range of aspects of life. 00:07:04.99\00:07:08.36 Yeah. 00:07:08.39\00:07:09.72 Tell me, do you think sponsorship makes a difference? 00:07:09.76\00:07:13.63 Tell me is sponsorship effective? 00:07:13.66\00:07:17.37 Is sponsorship a good thing for the children? 00:07:17.40\00:07:19.83 So tell me about your family, your mother and father, 00:07:34.32\00:07:39.09 did you come from a village? 00:07:39.12\00:07:40.86 Where did you come from? 00:07:40.89\00:07:42.22 So once again we hear these tough stories 00:08:27.04\00:08:30.71 of where one of the parents passes away. 00:08:30.74\00:08:34.54 She came to the school, 00:08:34.58\00:08:36.75 had no sponsorship for the first two years. 00:08:36.78\00:08:40.18 Just after she came here, her father passed away. 00:08:40.22\00:08:43.62 And her mother really struggled with six children. 00:08:43.65\00:08:47.02 She really just had no income at all. 00:08:47.06\00:08:50.39 And, in fact, we met a girl yesterday 00:08:50.43\00:08:52.89 that simply doesn't go home in the holidays 00:08:52.93\00:08:55.76 because her mother doesn't even have the bus fare. 00:08:55.80\00:09:00.40 It's just so heartening to hear 00:09:00.44\00:09:03.30 the difference that we're making. 00:09:03.34\00:09:05.21 Here's this girl that her mother had no hope 00:09:05.24\00:09:08.84 and yet here she is now teaching. 00:09:08.88\00:09:11.25 She's the secretary to the principal. 00:09:11.28\00:09:13.65 And it just shows you the impact 00:09:13.68\00:09:16.79 that sponsorship had. 00:09:16.82\00:09:18.39 And now she's got a family. 00:09:18.42\00:09:20.76 It makes a real difference. 00:09:20.79\00:09:22.69 Tell me about your family? 00:09:22.72\00:09:24.13 While the ability of the school 00:09:53.36\00:09:54.69 to create the professionals needed 00:09:54.72\00:09:56.42 to sustain its own operations is extremely useful, 00:09:56.46\00:09:59.96 the work opportunities for students of such schools 00:10:00.00\00:10:02.46 extend well beyond the campus walls. 00:10:02.50\00:10:06.70 We also were told of Jenifer Ekka, 00:10:06.74\00:10:09.24 a SAMS alumnus who has found gainful employment 00:10:09.27\00:10:11.97 providing IT services for the government, 00:10:12.01\00:10:14.34 Panchbibi Upazila, 00:10:14.38\00:10:16.11 the equivalent of a county in the United States. 00:10:16.14\00:10:18.51 Jenifer sat down to talk to us through her job 00:10:21.68\00:10:24.02 and how the education she received at SAMS 00:10:24.05\00:10:26.19 enabled her to secure the position. 00:10:26.22\00:10:28.62 Jenifer's background threatened to limit her future 00:10:28.66\00:10:30.73 ability to provide for her basic needs. 00:10:30.76\00:10:32.99 It was the intervention of schooling at SAMS 00:10:33.03\00:10:35.30 that changed this prospect made possible by sponsorship. 00:10:35.33\00:10:39.90 Jenifer, tell me you came to SAMS, 00:10:39.93\00:10:42.24 you were at the school? 00:10:42.27\00:10:43.67 And when you left SAMS College, 00:11:10.13\00:11:13.37 where did you do your tertiary training? 00:11:13.40\00:11:16.54 Well, this young lady's got ambitions. 00:12:05.15\00:12:07.56 She graduated, she did university studies. 00:12:07.59\00:12:14.26 And now she's studying her master's 00:12:14.30\00:12:16.63 as well as working as well as helping others. 00:12:16.67\00:12:20.20 And she wants to be a college professor. 00:12:20.24\00:12:24.07 And this is so encouraging 00:12:24.11\00:12:27.04 to hear someone that has gone so far, 00:12:27.08\00:12:30.21 and is still determined to go further. 00:12:30.25\00:12:32.78 So, Jenifer, well done. 00:12:32.81\00:12:36.35 And we wish you well in becoming a professor. 00:12:36.38\00:12:39.65 And it's just so great to hear these stories, 00:12:39.69\00:12:42.96 because girls face many challenges 00:12:42.99\00:12:46.33 in a poor society. 00:12:46.36\00:12:48.76 And Jenifer's not only succeeded, 00:12:48.80\00:12:51.37 she's helping others. 00:12:51.40\00:12:53.13 A great story. 00:12:53.17\00:12:55.34 Through the stories 00:12:55.37\00:12:56.71 of Mr. and Mrs. Toppo and Jenifer, 00:12:56.74\00:12:58.74 the compounding benefits of Adventist Mission schools 00:12:58.77\00:13:01.51 like SAMS 00:13:01.54\00:13:02.88 and the sponsorship that allows for much of the student body 00:13:02.91\00:13:05.18 to attend becomes clear. 00:13:05.21\00:13:07.38 Education is not meant to be a momentary benefit to a child, 00:13:07.42\00:13:10.29 but a lasting one, 00:13:10.32\00:13:11.65 something which is especially crucial 00:13:11.69\00:13:13.39 in economically depressed environments, 00:13:13.42\00:13:15.69 where upward mobility 00:13:15.72\00:13:17.06 often requires outside assistance to happen. 00:13:17.09\00:13:19.29 The benefits of education 00:13:19.33\00:13:20.66 are supposed to last a lifetime, 00:13:20.70\00:13:23.26 whether they be basic life skills, 00:13:23.30\00:13:25.13 the knowledge needed to seek a gainful living, 00:13:25.17\00:13:27.37 or most importantly, 00:13:27.40\00:13:28.74 a relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:13:28.77\00:13:30.61
