Child Impact International is an organization giving hope. 00:00:07.14\00:00:11.14 Previously called Asian Aid, Child Impact International 00:00:11.17\00:00:14.74 is an organization fostering permanent positive change 00:00:14.78\00:00:18.18 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:18.21\00:00:20.22 and their communities. 00:00:20.25\00:00:21.78 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:21.82\00:00:24.35 in the lives of children and those who are in need. 00:00:24.39\00:00:27.26 Serving communities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, 00:00:27.29\00:00:31.23 Myanmar, and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:31.26\00:00:34.56 For the last 50 years, 00:00:34.60\00:00:36.13 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people 00:00:36.16\00:00:39.13 and their investment has proven infinite returns, 00:00:39.17\00:00:42.00 driven by the dedication to helping 00:00:42.04\00:00:43.97 those who have the least. 00:00:44.01\00:00:45.67 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:45.71\00:00:47.64 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:47.68\00:00:49.81 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:49.84\00:00:52.28 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.31\00:00:54.42 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:54.45\00:00:57.39 to providing an education for orphans, 00:00:57.42\00:00:59.89 deaf and the blind children, giving them a sense of place, 00:00:59.92\00:01:03.76 a home, but above all, 00:01:03.79\00:01:05.56 Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:05.59\00:01:08.50 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:08.53\00:01:11.83 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:11.87\00:01:14.60 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:14.64\00:01:16.20 Bangladesh is small, 00:01:31.12\00:01:33.15 but due to its mostly rural development, 00:01:33.19\00:01:35.62 the distance is much larger in between cities. 00:01:35.66\00:01:40.00 KMMS is around six hours from Dhaka, 00:01:40.03\00:01:43.20 yet SAMS the other school that we visited 00:01:43.23\00:01:45.80 is a bit farther from KMMS. 00:01:45.83\00:01:49.00 Early one morning, a hired van started us 00:01:49.04\00:01:51.21 on the journey from KMMS 00:01:51.24\00:01:53.07 to the Seventh-day Adventists Maranatha Seminary 00:01:53.11\00:01:56.14 or SAMS for short. 00:01:56.18\00:01:58.88 This school which is home 00:01:58.91\00:02:00.25 to many other Child Impact sponsored children 00:02:00.28\00:02:02.48 is 190 miles from KMMS, 00:02:02.52\00:02:05.59 which would normally take between two to three hours 00:02:05.62\00:02:08.09 of driving in the United States. 00:02:08.12\00:02:10.39 But the journey there took nine hours 00:02:10.43\00:02:12.73 due to the difficult road conditions. 00:02:12.76\00:02:17.43 The conditions we pass through on our way to SAMS 00:02:17.47\00:02:20.14 showed us many of the challenges 00:02:20.17\00:02:21.80 people face making a living here. 00:02:21.84\00:02:24.91 This was clear when the faculty 00:02:24.94\00:02:26.57 from KMMS told us how students might stay there all year, 00:02:26.61\00:02:30.68 because their parents cannot afford to get them 00:02:30.71\00:02:33.38 during holidays or school breaks. 00:02:33.42\00:02:36.28 The distance is too far and cumbersome, 00:02:36.32\00:02:38.69 let alone the cost of traveling there 00:02:38.72\00:02:40.62 becomes more than they can afford. 00:02:40.66\00:02:42.16 At one point on our trip to SAMS, 00:02:46.63\00:02:48.56 we encountered two men 00:02:48.60\00:02:49.93 blocking the road with elephants. 00:02:49.96\00:02:52.27 They were trying to get motorists to pay them 00:02:52.30\00:02:54.50 to move out of the way. 00:02:54.54\00:02:56.44 This is apparently quite common 00:02:56.47\00:02:58.64 and people do various tactics 00:02:58.67\00:03:00.38 like this in order to get money. 00:03:00.41\00:03:03.24 Later we were stopped by police 00:03:03.28\00:03:05.28 who escorted us the rest of the way 00:03:05.31\00:03:06.98 out of concern for our safety and of all tourists 00:03:07.02\00:03:09.92 who go into their country. 00:03:09.95\00:03:12.52 At the end of that very long, bumpy day, 00:03:12.55\00:03:15.39 Jim Rennie from Child Impact 00:03:15.42\00:03:17.09 and the camera crew arrived at SAMS, 00:03:17.13\00:03:19.53 which is on the outskirts of Saidpur, 00:03:19.56\00:03:21.53 a growing city of over 200,000 people. 00:03:21.56\00:03:25.33 We were greeted in a spectacular fashion. 00:03:25.37\00:03:27.84 In Bangladeshi culture, 00:03:27.87\00:03:29.37 ceremony is considered very important, 00:03:29.40\00:03:31.97 and foreign visitors are rare. 00:03:32.01\00:03:33.74 So the students at SAMS prepared 00:03:33.78\00:03:35.34 an elaborate welcome ceremony 00:03:35.38\00:03:37.01 with songs, cultural dances and flower garlands. 00:03:37.05\00:03:40.02 To understand how important this is to them, 00:03:43.75\00:03:45.92 they knew we were headed there to document the school, 00:03:45.95\00:03:48.16 so they prepared and rehearsed for three weeks 00:03:48.19\00:03:50.56 just to be ready for that moment. 00:03:50.59\00:03:53.06 Even after we asked them 00:03:53.09\00:03:54.43 not to worry about an elaborate show, 00:03:54.46\00:03:55.86 they couldn't see it as a possibility 00:03:55.90\00:03:57.73 because it is important for them to show the respect. 00:03:57.77\00:04:01.27 Many times understanding their culture 00:04:01.30\00:04:03.24 and what they value can greatly improve relations 00:04:03.27\00:04:06.11 and forward the mission. 00:04:06.14\00:04:09.54 We saw that the first day we visited SAMS. 00:04:09.58\00:04:13.21 They had a diverse religion group 00:04:13.25\00:04:15.25 and all work together learning the gospel 00:04:15.28\00:04:17.32 and being respectful. 00:04:17.35\00:04:19.79 We've been told this at KMMS, but we saw it firsthand 00:04:19.82\00:04:22.82 because of the way we were greeted. 00:04:22.86\00:04:25.06 At KMMS, we had a ceremony of our own 00:04:25.09\00:04:27.50 but small because we'd asked them 00:04:27.53\00:04:29.10 not to worry about anything grand. 00:04:29.13\00:04:30.60 Mike at KMMS, SAMS is very diverse 00:04:35.07\00:04:37.91 with different religious groups, 00:04:37.94\00:04:39.41 and we got to experience it the first day. 00:04:39.44\00:04:41.11 Well, we're still in Bangladesh 00:04:54.36\00:04:56.99 and we're at what they call SAMS College, 00:04:57.03\00:05:00.06 which is Seventh-day Adventists Maranatha Seminary, 00:05:00.10\00:05:05.40 is located right up in the north of Bangladesh. 00:05:05.43\00:05:08.84 In fact, right up by the Indian border. 00:05:08.87\00:05:11.54 If we walk probably 10 miles that way, we'd be in India. 00:05:11.57\00:05:16.34 And yesterday we drove north from KMMS School. 00:05:16.38\00:05:20.75 Everyone told us it was going to be 00:05:20.78\00:05:22.42 a seven to eight hour journey. 00:05:22.45\00:05:24.45 But in fact, it was over nine. 00:05:24.49\00:05:26.65 And for one hour, we were on a rough road. 00:05:26.69\00:05:29.96 Trust me, I'm still feeling it in my neck. 00:05:29.99\00:05:33.53 There are a couple of things that come out of yesterday 00:05:33.56\00:05:36.26 that I want to share with you beside 00:05:36.30\00:05:38.13 it being a long way. 00:05:38.17\00:05:40.44 The first as we drove through 00:05:40.47\00:05:42.44 the countryside, the population. 00:05:42.47\00:05:45.77 Every 30 minutes, we came to a new town, 00:05:45.81\00:05:49.68 and it was just packed with people. 00:05:49.71\00:05:52.55 And it really gave us a sense of feeling 00:05:52.58\00:05:55.18 of why Bangladesh is one of the most 00:05:55.22\00:05:57.59 densely populated countries in the world. 00:05:57.62\00:06:00.89 The other factor, there were no cars, 00:06:00.92\00:06:04.19 or three wheelers, people don't have 00:06:04.23\00:06:06.39 any money for motorbikes or cars. 00:06:06.43\00:06:09.46 And so they use very cheap travel methods. 00:06:09.50\00:06:15.27 The other thing that struck us was, 00:06:15.30\00:06:17.81 as we drove through the fields, 00:06:17.84\00:06:19.47 we could see hundreds, if not thousands of people 00:06:19.51\00:06:23.11 working in the field, very labor intensive, 00:06:23.14\00:06:27.55 but also very poor paying. 00:06:27.58\00:06:30.19 And when there is no work, there is no work. 00:06:30.22\00:06:33.39 People don't get paid. 00:06:33.42\00:06:35.29 So the communities are very dependent 00:06:35.32\00:06:38.46 on rural country work, but also are very poorly paid. 00:06:38.49\00:06:43.87 And this reflects on 00:06:43.90\00:06:46.03 what we see in the villages we've been to. 00:06:46.07\00:06:50.21 Things are pretty ragged and half there. 00:06:50.24\00:06:54.24 I guess the other thing that became obvious 00:06:54.28\00:06:57.05 is the role of women in society. 00:06:57.08\00:07:00.62 Normally, the girls stay in the village 00:07:00.65\00:07:04.12 from a very young age, 00:07:04.15\00:07:05.92 they're married off at an early age, 00:07:05.95\00:07:09.59 and they start having children at an early age. 00:07:09.62\00:07:13.50 And these children are born into poverty. 00:07:13.53\00:07:16.46 The other thing we've noticed 00:07:16.50\00:07:17.83 is a high ratio of single mothers. 00:07:17.87\00:07:22.67 The husband has left 00:07:22.70\00:07:24.74 and the mother is left with nothing. 00:07:24.77\00:07:27.01 He sends so no support, 00:07:27.04\00:07:29.24 and there is no government support. 00:07:29.28\00:07:31.45 And I was very, I was amazed at the number 00:07:31.48\00:07:36.05 of single parents at KMMS School. 00:07:36.08\00:07:39.02 We went out and met one, 00:07:39.05\00:07:40.69 a very dedicated lady to her children, 00:07:40.72\00:07:43.56 but she has to work in the field, 00:07:43.59\00:07:45.99 she has to take menial tasks. 00:07:46.03\00:07:49.03 And for her children to have an education 00:07:49.06\00:07:51.93 is just not an education for them, 00:07:51.97\00:07:54.24 it gives hope because of the reality 00:07:54.27\00:07:57.51 was they were at home or even at home 00:07:57.54\00:08:00.31 and going to the government school, 00:08:00.34\00:08:02.24 then she could not afford to feed them. 00:08:02.28\00:08:05.45 And so, the education, the sponsorship 00:08:05.48\00:08:09.68 has a much bigger impact 00:08:09.72\00:08:11.85 on the family and the community. 00:08:11.89\00:08:15.52 This school, Seventh-day Adventists Maranatha Seminary 00:08:15.56\00:08:18.29 was established 00:08:18.33\00:08:19.66 as Mohipur Adventist Seminary in 1993. 00:08:19.69\00:08:23.13 And education was limited to pre high school. 00:08:23.16\00:08:26.53 It was the first school of its kind 00:08:26.57\00:08:28.60 in the West Bangladesh mission. 00:08:28.64\00:08:30.51 And despite limited resources, 00:08:30.54\00:08:32.17 it started with 160 enrolled students. 00:08:32.21\00:08:36.34 A few years later, 00:08:36.38\00:08:37.71 thanks to the work of a single American donor, 00:08:37.75\00:08:40.05 the school was able to build five campus buildings 00:08:40.08\00:08:42.68 and sidewalks throughout the campus. 00:08:42.72\00:08:45.09 The school continue to grow. 00:08:45.12\00:08:47.92 This school is very beautiful. 00:08:47.96\00:08:49.99 The architecture is modern and built to last. 00:08:50.03\00:08:52.63 The attention to detail is evident. 00:08:52.66\00:08:55.30 The layout of the school is very well thought out. 00:08:55.33\00:08:59.17 The kids are able to really take advantage of this place, 00:08:59.20\00:09:02.30 and because of the order and how nice everything looks, 00:09:02.34\00:09:05.17 it's able to take them away 00:09:05.21\00:09:06.64 from the poverty that is all around them. 00:09:06.68\00:09:09.61 This lets them not worry 00:09:09.64\00:09:10.98 about tomorrow's income or food, 00:09:11.01\00:09:13.18 but lets them focus on their educational future 00:09:13.21\00:09:15.88 and ambitions. 00:09:15.92\00:09:20.32 Now in 2020, the school has a student body 00:09:20.36\00:09:23.16 of over 800 children, 00:09:23.19\00:09:24.96 many of whom are sponsored to attend, 00:09:24.99\00:09:27.20 and many more who still need sponsorship. 00:09:27.23\00:09:30.60 The school is dedicated to keeping as many students 00:09:30.63\00:09:33.13 as it possibly can, 00:09:33.17\00:09:34.54 which often places it at the edge of financial peril. 00:09:34.57\00:09:39.31 SAMS opened a vocational school in 2004 00:09:39.34\00:09:42.81 through the work of the same donor 00:09:42.84\00:09:44.25 who started the construction 00:09:44.28\00:09:45.61 of most of the campus several years prior. 00:09:45.65\00:09:49.32 The vocational school offers 00:09:49.35\00:09:50.75 classes in sewing, carpentry, and motorcycle repair. 00:09:50.79\00:09:54.99 Motorcycles are high in demand in Bangladesh 00:09:55.02\00:09:57.36 as the economy is largely built around textiles, 00:09:57.39\00:09:59.89 construction is at its highest rate 00:09:59.93\00:10:01.46 in the country history. 00:10:01.50\00:10:02.83 And most Bangladeshis do not yet own cars. 00:10:02.86\00:10:06.40 Much like KMMS, SAMS also has 00:10:06.43\00:10:08.50 its own agricultural facilities, 00:10:08.54\00:10:10.57 growing rice and vegetables, 00:10:10.61\00:10:12.34 and maintaining goats and cows. 00:10:12.37\00:10:15.48 The culture at SAMS is a joyful one, 00:10:15.51\00:10:17.68 and the students find time 00:10:17.71\00:10:19.05 to live full lives with each other. 00:10:19.08\00:10:22.78 SAMS is very similar to KMMS in its mission. 00:10:22.82\00:10:26.49 They are mostly supported through sponsors 00:10:26.52\00:10:28.39 and have a focus on ministry. 00:10:28.42\00:10:31.09 They are much better schools 00:10:31.13\00:10:32.46 compared to the public schools in the area. 00:10:32.49\00:10:35.33 SAMS and KMMS 00:10:35.36\00:10:36.97 are especially making a difference 00:10:37.00\00:10:38.53 with the poor communities. 00:10:38.57\00:10:40.54 It's incredible how many parents 00:10:40.57\00:10:42.00 ask for their children to enter the school. 00:10:42.04\00:10:45.61 Everyone was very happy at SAMS. 00:10:45.64\00:10:48.28 You walk around and see students 00:10:48.31\00:10:49.84 sitting on the grass together talking or studying, 00:10:49.88\00:10:53.01 while others are running around playing. 00:10:53.05\00:10:55.82 Our time there was during their exams, 00:10:55.85\00:10:57.79 so the pressure was a lot for them. 00:10:57.82\00:10:59.92 But even that didn't keep them from enjoying life. 00:10:59.95\00:11:03.56 Our presence there made everybody excited. 00:11:03.59\00:11:06.19 Our first positive impression kept true throughout the visit. 00:11:06.23\00:11:09.53 The story of our first day at SAMS however, 00:11:13.34\00:11:15.74 ended with a light moment. 00:11:15.77\00:11:17.84 Ever the attention grabber, 00:11:17.87\00:11:19.21 when we took our drone 00:11:19.24\00:11:20.58 to get aerial footage of the school, 00:11:20.61\00:11:22.01 the children came from all directions. 00:11:22.04\00:11:24.71 Word spreads quickly on the small campus. 00:11:24.75\00:11:27.42 This wasn't
