Good evening. 00:00:04.77\00:00:06.20 Welcome to another program 00:00:06.23\00:00:08.07 about the work of Child Impact in Bangladesh. 00:00:08.10\00:00:12.14 Before it starts, 00:00:12.17\00:00:13.61 I just want to share two items with you. 00:00:13.64\00:00:17.58 Is Child Impact is facing pressure 00:00:17.61\00:00:20.55 in the communities where we sponsor children, 00:00:20.58\00:00:23.99 especially in India and Bangladesh? 00:00:24.02\00:00:26.72 The reality is that the lockdowns 00:00:26.76\00:00:29.62 are really affecting the poor, and those that don't have jobs. 00:00:29.66\00:00:34.90 We are helping where we can. 00:00:34.93\00:00:36.80 And if you can help, just in some small way, 00:00:36.83\00:00:40.04 a donation to where we are needed most fund 00:00:40.07\00:00:43.14 or our Rice and Health Appeal will make a difference. 00:00:43.17\00:00:47.21 Just go to our website, childimpact.org. 00:00:47.24\00:00:52.81 We're very excited to announce Meanwhile, please sit and enjoy this new story 00:01:42.23\00:01:46.23 from Child Impact's work in Bangladesh. 00:01:46.27\00:01:49.44 Bangladesh has made tremendous gains 00:02:19.17\00:02:20.94 in development over the last 20 years, 00:02:20.97\00:02:23.87 with many people leaving extreme poverty. 00:02:23.91\00:02:27.38 But it is still a very densely populated place 00:02:27.41\00:02:30.51 with many lingering issues and food remains one of them. 00:02:30.55\00:02:34.92 Despite being a largely agricultural country, 00:02:34.95\00:02:37.59 40 million people or one in four Bangladeshis 00:02:37.62\00:02:40.76 are presently food insecure. 00:02:40.79\00:02:42.29 This affects around five and a half million children 00:02:45.86\00:02:48.66 under the age of five which causes them to suffer 00:02:48.70\00:02:51.53 from stunted growth. 00:02:51.57\00:02:53.74 Much of this food insecurity is concentrated in rural areas. 00:02:53.77\00:02:58.04 Rural areas suffer from lack of money. 00:02:58.07\00:03:00.34 Even though many of the workers are farmers. 00:03:00.38\00:03:03.71 A lot of the work goes 00:03:03.75\00:03:05.08 into selling food in order to survive, 00:03:05.11\00:03:07.25 and people cannot afford much of the food that's around. 00:03:07.28\00:03:10.49 Agriculture has had a huge impact 00:03:10.52\00:03:12.65 on reducing poverty, 00:03:12.69\00:03:14.26 but there's also been an increase of overpopulation. 00:03:14.29\00:03:16.89 And with that comes a scarcity of food. 00:03:16.93\00:03:20.73 This episode focuses on 00:03:20.76\00:03:22.23 how much effort is taken to feed 00:03:22.26\00:03:24.30 all the students on campus and about Ajoy. 00:03:24.33\00:03:27.60 My name is Ajoy. 00:03:27.64\00:03:29.87 A boy who also lost a family member 00:03:29.90\00:03:32.24 and depends on KMMS to have food and housing. 00:03:32.27\00:03:35.64 When did you come to KMMS? 00:03:38.81\00:03:40.62 It is challenging to communicate 00:03:58.33\00:03:59.83 when you don't know the language. 00:03:59.87\00:04:01.47 And Ajoy was very shy once he was on camera talking, 00:04:01.50\00:04:05.14 but he's still impressed us with his dreams for the future. 00:04:05.17\00:04:09.54 What does he want to do when he's finished the school? 00:04:09.58\00:04:11.51 Doctor. 00:04:15.32\00:04:16.65 Why do you want to be a doctor? 00:04:16.69\00:04:18.42 Poverty is tough. 00:04:27.83\00:04:29.93 And growing up, the children 00:04:29.96\00:04:31.37 have a desire to see a change in their world. 00:04:31.40\00:04:35.50 There are many roles to play in helping with poverty. 00:04:35.54\00:04:40.54 Food is a very important role in making Bangladesh improve. 00:04:40.58\00:04:45.58 Agriculture will both serve to help the economy 00:04:45.61\00:04:48.05 as well as provide more food for the population. 00:04:48.08\00:04:51.85 KMMS has focused a lot on food and it's a main focus 00:04:51.89\00:04:55.36 for generating income for the school. 00:04:55.39\00:04:59.26 In order to keep the school running 00:04:59.29\00:05:00.80 they have to bring in a lot of food 00:05:00.83\00:05:02.60 for all the students at the school. 00:05:02.63\00:05:04.93 A large portion is actually grown at KMMS 00:05:04.97\00:05:08.30 and is both sold and cooked for the children. 00:05:08.34\00:05:12.14 They focus on giving a variety and abundance of food. 00:05:12.17\00:05:14.94 Part of operating in a rural area 00:05:19.85\00:05:21.68 means that most children would have 00:05:21.72\00:05:23.22 no other means of food. 00:05:23.25\00:05:24.99 The school provides the students 00:05:25.02\00:05:26.62 all the necessary food they would need to be healthy. 00:05:26.65\00:05:29.16 The students are assigned chores of both 00:05:33.03\00:05:34.70 cooking the meals with the staff 00:05:34.73\00:05:36.43 as well as taking care of the farms 00:05:36.46\00:05:38.37 on the school grounds. 00:05:38.40\00:05:40.34 A large part of the land 00:05:40.37\00:05:41.70 is used for farming and raising animals. 00:05:41.74\00:05:45.84 Ajoy is one of the students that has to help maintain 00:05:45.87\00:05:48.51 and take care of the school. 00:05:48.54\00:05:51.58 The day we filmed him 00:05:51.61\00:05:52.95 he was in charge of passing the food 00:05:52.98\00:05:54.85 for students during lunch. 00:05:54.88\00:05:57.65 Children are separated into groups 00:05:57.69\00:05:59.62 and each a different student will be responsible 00:05:59.65\00:06:02.32 for passing the food to everyone. 00:06:02.36\00:06:04.03 Ajoy is currently in fifth grade. 00:06:07.13\00:06:09.56 He's been at KMMS for six years now 00:06:09.60\00:06:11.97 and came when he was seven. 00:06:12.00\00:06:14.34 Since then he's been doing really well in school, 00:06:14.37\00:06:17.01 and the teachers love him. 00:06:17.04\00:06:19.04 Ajoy when he was a small boy, 00:06:19.07\00:06:21.74 so he lost his father because of cancer maybe, 00:06:21.78\00:06:27.35 cancer, so he passed away. 00:06:27.38\00:06:30.09 He lost his father when he was very young. 00:06:30.12\00:06:32.42 And so his mother has struggled to raise four children. 00:06:32.45\00:06:35.86 Ajoy has already three elder siblings. 00:06:35.89\00:06:40.93 Two brothers and one elder sister. 00:06:40.96\00:06:44.97 All of them are at KMMS, 00:06:45.00\00:06:46.63 which helps the mother a lot 00:06:46.67\00:06:48.04 since she can't afford to provide for them. 00:06:48.07\00:06:53.48 His mother works as a cook, 00:06:53.51\00:06:55.14 but it's not enough money to even help one of them. 00:06:55.18\00:06:57.91 And she went to Dhaka city for government works 00:06:57.95\00:07:02.28 and after as she knows about this school 00:07:02.32\00:07:05.85 and she put them all in the school 00:07:05.89\00:07:08.49 and she is now freely can work. 00:07:08.52\00:07:11.56 And all of his brother and sister 00:07:11.59\00:07:14.96 can be educated from this school. 00:07:15.00\00:07:18.27 Sponsorship has helped her a lot 00:07:18.30\00:07:20.17 because it provides a place for them to stay, 00:07:20.20\00:07:22.50 as well as meals for them. 00:07:22.54\00:07:24.81 Ajoy loves KMMS 00:07:24.84\00:07:26.71 and wants to use this opportunity 00:07:26.74\00:07:28.58 to one day become a doctor. 00:07:28.61\00:07:31.08 He told us that his goal is to provide free services 00:07:31.11\00:07:33.52 to the poor since they can't afford 00:07:33.55\00:07:35.08 going to the doctor. 00:07:35.12\00:07:36.45 So today I wanna bring you 00:07:36.48\00:07:37.82 another Child Impact student from Bangladesh. 00:07:37.85\00:07:41.29 And this is Ajoy and he's 13 years of age. 00:07:41.32\00:07:45.99 Now he has two brothers and a sister. 00:07:46.03\00:07:49.20 And unfortunately his father passed away 00:07:49.23\00:07:52.43 and his mother is a day laborer. 00:07:52.47\00:07:54.94 So life's a bit of a struggle for her 00:07:54.97\00:07:57.27 because there isn't consistent work 00:07:57.31\00:07:59.61 and with four children, 00:07:59.64\00:08:02.68 life really is a little tough, 00:08:02.71\00:08:05.58 but Ajoy is able to come to this boarding school. 00:08:05.61\00:08:09.88 And he's supported by a sponsor. 00:08:09.92\00:08:12.59 So not only does 00:08:12.62\00:08:13.96 it make a difference in his life, 00:08:13.99\00:08:15.76 but it's also a big support to his mother, 00:08:15.79\00:08:18.69 who is a very hard worker, 00:08:18.73\00:08:20.56 but struggles to raise four children. 00:08:20.60\00:08:24.43 He wants to grow up to be a doctor. 00:08:24.47\00:08:26.87 And in fact, this morning, he's just completed his exams 00:08:26.90\00:08:30.74 for the Bangla language, the government exam, 00:08:30.77\00:08:34.84 and he studied hard. 00:08:34.88\00:08:36.41 In fact, he was up late last night, 00:08:36.44\00:08:39.15 studying for the exam this morning. 00:08:39.18\00:08:41.98 So here's another example of how sponsorship 00:08:42.02\00:08:45.82 is giving a little boy like Ajoy an education, 00:08:45.85\00:08:50.13 but it is a great relief to his mother, 00:08:50.16\00:08:52.76 that she can have her children supported 00:08:52.79\00:08:55.46 by sponsorship. 00:08:55.50\00:08:56.97 And I just want to thank the people 00:08:57.00\00:08:58.80 that sponsor children like Ajoy, 00:08:58.83\00:09:01.27 and for the difference that it makes. 00:09:01.30\00:09:05.44 KMMS providing food makes a huge difference 00:09:05.47\00:09:08.21 in the lives of these children. 00:09:08.24\00:09:11.28 The fact that it alleviates a big burden families have. 00:09:11.31\00:09:14.48 It gives a new form of opportunity 00:09:14.52\00:09:16.55 for the families in order to get further out of poverty. 00:09:16.58\00:09:20.29 Food isn't cheap and making that 00:09:20.32\00:09:21.92 much for students is quite the undertaking. 00:09:21.96\00:09:24.96 We have a vegetable garden, we produce also vegetables. 00:09:24.99\00:09:28.76 We can keep a worker, he can work day and night. 00:09:28.80\00:09:33.20 And that also really 00:09:33.23\00:09:34.57 that vegetable go to our cafeteria. 00:09:34.60\00:09:36.20 Even especially we produce more vegetables 00:09:36.24\00:09:39.27 in winter season. 00:09:39.31\00:09:40.88 In summer season also we produce, 00:09:40.91\00:09:43.04 summer season less because many part of the land 00:09:43.08\00:09:45.81 goes underwater in the rainy season, 00:09:45.85\00:09:48.15 but winter season, not much water 00:09:48.18\00:09:50.79 but we produce a lot of vegetables 00:09:50.82\00:09:53.62 and that goes to cafeteria and as a result, 00:09:53.66\00:09:55.86 less cost because if we buy vegetable 00:09:55.89\00:09:58.36 like this summer season we are buying, 00:09:58.39\00:10:00.60 now vegetable cost is very high, 00:10:00.63\00:10:02.40 but if you could produce then that could really 00:10:02.43\00:10:05.30 support financially our school. 00:10:05.33\00:10:07.70 Even no sponsorship 00:10:07.74\00:10:09.07 but still whenever they are sick, 00:10:09.10\00:10:11.31 school take care of them. 00:10:11.34\00:10:12.71 Whenever there is no food, school take care of them. 00:10:12.74\00:10:15.78 Whenever in any festival school 00:10:15.81\00:10:19.61 take care of them for special food. 00:10:19.65\00:10:21.48 Whenever the Christmas time come, 00:10:21.52\00:10:23.82 school take care of them special food, dress, 00:10:23.85\00:10:27.12 and other things and all, and many of them 00:10:27.16\00:10:29.72 they feel more safe 00:10:29.76\00:10:32.43 and will care here rather than home. 00:10:32.46\00:10:34.93 Ajoy, when he came to school 00:10:38.43\00:10:42.74 just he has bought 00:10:42.77\00:10:45.14 one or two shirts, half pants. 00:10:45.17\00:10:49.74 And when he came that time 00:10:49.78\00:10:51.78 he was very thin and he was very unhealthy, 00:10:51.81\00:10:56.85 but now he's healthy boy 00:10:56.89\00:11:00.22 and he's getting all the supplies 00:11:00.26\00:11:03.99 and when I talked with him that time he shared that, 00:11:04.03\00:11:09.23 "Sir, I am now okay 00:11:09.26\00:11:11.50 because if I lived with my parents 00:11:11.53\00:11:14.20 or in my village that time 00:11:14.24\00:11:16.00 I may not be able to go to school, sir." 00:11:16.04\00:11:18.84 He told me that, "Sir, 00:11:18.87\00:11:20.74 now I am getting the good education." 00:11:20.78\00:11:24.81 Alongside he attended all the religious activities, 00:11:24.85\00:11:29.48 all the programs, and he learned many things. 00:11:29.52\00:11:33.82 Donations help secure food for the school, 00:11:33.86\00:11:36.76 but much of what Ajoy and the other students eat 00:11:36.79\00:11:39.36 is produced on campus. 00:11:39.39\00:11:43.03 Three times a day, they need to prepare food 00:11:43.06\00:11:45.23 for hundreds of students. 00:11:45.27\00:11:47.64 That takes a lot of work, 00:11:47.67\00:11:49.10 and it's time consuming in order to 00:11:49.14\00:11:50.61 not mess anything up and waste the food. 00:11:50.64\00:11:55.01 Rice is not the only thing that the school produces. 00:11:55.04\00:11:58.25 Fish farming has become 00:11:58.28\00:11:59.61 the main source of income for the school. 00:11:59.65\00:12:02.55 They grow the fish until there is enough for farming. 00:12:02.58\00:12:05.22 They fish them out with nets and load them into metal pots. 00:12:05.25\00:12:09.16 These fish gets sold in markets nearby 00:12:09.19\00:12:11.23 and the money is used to provide 00:12:11.26\00:12:12.59 for the school including getting a variety of food 00:12:12.63\00:12:14.86 for the students. 00:12:14.90\00:12:18.97 We were there during the time for rice harvest, 00:12:19.00\00:12:21.84 many fields were cultivated. 00:12:21.87\00:12:23.71 All the work is done by hand and gets collected 00:12:23.74\00:12:26.04 and removed by hand again. 00:12:26.07\00:12:28.54 Students play a big part in preparing it to be sold. 00:12:28.58\00:12:32.58 Once the grain is collected, 00:12:32.61\00:12:33.95 they sift and dry it in the sun. 00:12:33.98\00:12:35.58 Then it's placed in bags where they sell it 00:12:47.63\00:12:49.50 to get carted out to markets. 00:12:49.53\00:12:54.04 The labor is intense and slow,
