Hi, there. 00:00:06.74\00:00:08.07 This is another program 00:00:08.10\00:00:09.77 in the Child Impact series 00:00:09.80\00:00:11.84 about our work in Bangladesh. 00:00:11.87\00:00:14.61 The virus pandemic is affecting countries 00:00:14.64\00:00:18.11 in different ways. 00:00:18.15\00:00:19.98 In countries like Bangladesh, India and Myanmar, 00:00:20.02\00:00:24.29 millions of low wage workers 00:00:24.32\00:00:26.69 have no work and get no assistance. 00:00:26.72\00:00:30.36 They were on the poverty line to start with. 00:00:30.39\00:00:33.03 So the result is that people are going hungry. 00:00:33.06\00:00:39.20 It's school holidays so Child Impact is planning 00:00:39.23\00:00:43.00 for when school starts again to ensure that 00:00:43.04\00:00:46.21 there is adequate food and health training. 00:00:46.24\00:00:49.74 Parents will be happy to have their children 00:00:49.78\00:00:52.21 at school so they get fed. 00:00:52.25\00:00:55.42 Thanks for your support. 00:00:55.45\00:00:56.89 It's been amazing and we still have huge needs. 00:00:56.92\00:01:00.89 I hope you enjoy this program 00:01:00.92\00:01:02.62 about a special sponsored girl in Bangladesh. 00:01:02.66\00:01:06.03 Bangladesh is a country filled with mostly young people. 00:01:20.81\00:01:23.81 Over half the population is at or under the age of 15, 00:01:23.85\00:01:27.68 that's around 70 million kids. 00:01:27.72\00:01:30.32 Bangladesh is struggling to deal 00:01:30.35\00:01:31.85 with the amount of children that suffer 00:01:31.89\00:01:33.25 from the death of a parent or both parents. 00:01:33.29\00:01:35.99 Life expectancy is better compared to before, 00:01:36.02\00:01:38.79 but even so, there are many children 00:01:38.83\00:01:40.83 who grew up without one or both parents. 00:01:40.86\00:01:43.50 Most of these children end up 00:01:43.53\00:01:45.03 living on the streets or working at a young age. 00:01:45.07\00:01:48.14 The hardest part for a child 00:01:48.17\00:01:49.57 in this situation is having to deal 00:01:49.60\00:01:51.14 with it in a healthy way and not ending up worse. 00:01:51.17\00:01:54.44 KMMS strives to make their school a place 00:01:54.48\00:01:57.05 that can help children cope with hardships in Bangladesh. 00:01:57.08\00:02:00.58 Sajuti is 11 years old 00:02:00.62\00:02:02.32 and has just begun the fifth grade at KMMS. 00:02:02.35\00:02:05.52 Though this is her first year in attendance, 00:02:05.55\00:02:07.26 she has three sisters and a brother 00:02:07.29\00:02:09.26 in what she describes to people as a happy family. 00:02:09.29\00:02:13.90 We have the opportunity to both, 00:02:13.93\00:02:15.53 talk to her and see how she lives at KMMS. 00:02:15.56\00:02:18.87 When did you come to KMMS? 00:02:18.90\00:02:23.61 How do you like the school so far? 00:02:23.64\00:02:26.91 What is your favorite thing about school? 00:02:26.94\00:02:29.61 What do you want to do 00:02:32.68\00:02:34.02 when you are finished with school? 00:02:34.05\00:02:36.05 Nurse. 00:02:36.08\00:02:37.42 Sadly her mother passed away not too long 00:02:52.30\00:02:54.40 before we got there. 00:02:54.44\00:02:55.77 She was very sad and noticeably reserved. 00:02:55.80\00:02:59.21 Millions of children in Bangladesh 00:02:59.24\00:03:00.71 go through this and usually have no choice 00:03:00.74\00:03:02.94 but to work and move on without a safe environment. 00:03:02.98\00:03:06.65 Death of a parent usually ruins a family 00:03:06.68\00:03:08.65 because income is really hard to come by. 00:03:08.68\00:03:11.02 The average salary is $1 a day 00:03:11.05\00:03:13.29 and most of that money 00:03:13.32\00:03:14.66 goes to buying food and little more. 00:03:14.69\00:03:17.03 That family lives 25 miles away, 00:03:17.06\00:03:19.06 a long distance for Bangladesh, 00:03:19.09\00:03:20.70 in a hut constructed from earth and tin. 00:03:20.73\00:03:24.83 Sajuti has been able to come to KMMS, 00:03:24.87\00:03:27.40 thanks to the sponsorship she got from Child Impact. 00:03:27.44\00:03:30.54 And now she's been able to live a better life 00:03:30.57\00:03:32.71 here at the school. 00:03:32.74\00:03:34.74 She had a sponsor and one sad news that, 00:03:34.78\00:03:40.02 last month she lost her mother. 00:03:40.05\00:03:43.79 And his father, he's not getting enough money 00:03:43.82\00:03:49.69 for surviving or operating their families. 00:03:49.72\00:03:54.53 And their elder sisters, 00:03:54.56\00:03:57.30 they're studying in the other boarding schools. 00:03:57.33\00:04:00.47 So they have to pay 00:04:00.50\00:04:01.84 their education fees over there. 00:04:01.87\00:04:03.64 So it is impossible for her father 00:04:03.67\00:04:06.07 to give the basic needs 00:04:06.11\00:04:10.75 of their children. 00:04:10.78\00:04:12.58 Yeah, it is a great help, you know, 00:04:12.61\00:04:14.15 to study in Adventist school and college, 00:04:14.18\00:04:17.22 because at Adventist school show their love and care 00:04:17.25\00:04:21.62 beyond any other institution, beyond expectation even. 00:04:21.66\00:04:25.39 And by the grace of God even there are some students, 00:04:25.43\00:04:28.36 they're never free, but they are faithful in study, 00:04:28.40\00:04:31.33 faithful in work, faithful to God, 00:04:31.37\00:04:35.54 and school take care of them, 00:04:35.57\00:04:37.17 and by the grace of God 00:04:37.21\00:04:38.54 even some help comes from here and there. 00:04:38.57\00:04:41.81 Students, they like the school environment. 00:04:41.84\00:04:45.58 And they like also education, Christian education. 00:04:45.61\00:04:48.35 And they can also develop their talents, you know, 00:04:48.38\00:04:52.92 joining many school program, 00:04:52.95\00:04:54.72 prophecy class, and also Sabbath school class, 00:04:54.76\00:04:58.69 also in song service, and different thing, 00:04:58.73\00:05:01.46 and the worship, 00:05:01.50\00:05:02.83 and they learn also leadership work. 00:05:02.86\00:05:05.47 So our school environment 00:05:05.50\00:05:07.34 is much better than government school, 00:05:07.37\00:05:11.14 public school. 00:05:11.17\00:05:12.51 So they like this school environment very much. 00:05:12.54\00:05:14.78 Even guardian also like this environment. 00:05:14.81\00:05:17.41 We have a government school but their school environment 00:05:17.45\00:05:20.95 is not good, not well secure, 00:05:20.98\00:05:23.12 and usually government school, the students are irregular. 00:05:23.15\00:05:27.72 But boarding school, students are regular. 00:05:27.76\00:05:30.83 If a simple... 00:05:30.86\00:05:33.09 If the environment is like, if it is little rain, 00:05:33.13\00:05:36.50 outside public school, they don't go to... 00:05:36.53\00:05:38.80 students, they don't go home, don't... 00:05:38.83\00:05:40.54 They don't go to school. 00:05:40.57\00:05:42.17 But in our boarding school, 00:05:42.20\00:05:44.54 even though there are some natural calamities, 00:05:44.57\00:05:46.78 but still school go regularly, 00:05:46.81\00:05:50.15 so easily they can maintain regular class 00:05:50.18\00:05:52.95 but government school, 00:05:52.98\00:05:54.32 they cannot maintain regular class. 00:05:54.35\00:05:57.82 KMMS helps students grow and develop their education 00:05:57.85\00:06:01.39 and habits through their planned routines. 00:06:01.42\00:06:03.46 Since children live here, 00:06:03.49\00:06:04.83 they need to follow some instructions 00:06:04.86\00:06:06.36 and have certain responsibilities. 00:06:06.39\00:06:08.83 Students help keep the school clean 00:06:08.86\00:06:10.63 and even help cook. 00:06:10.67\00:06:12.50 Students alter what they are assigned to do 00:06:12.53\00:06:14.27 in order to gain other skills 00:06:14.30\00:06:15.80 like cooking, cleaning and farming. 00:06:15.84\00:06:18.41 We have seven days in a week. 00:06:18.44\00:06:21.41 Usually our class starts 00:06:21.44\00:06:24.18 from Sunday to Thursday, 00:06:24.21\00:06:27.95 Fridays is a work day, 00:06:27.98\00:06:29.32 and Saturdays is our worship day 00:06:29.35\00:06:31.39 and our 5.30 is our rising bell, 00:06:31.42\00:06:35.99 then half an hour cleaning, 00:06:36.02\00:06:38.33 then after that they go for worship. 00:06:38.36\00:06:40.80 After worship, they go for breakfast, 00:06:40.83\00:06:43.70 7 o'clock, after breakfast, 00:06:43.73\00:06:46.30 most of the student they go to class 00:06:46.33\00:06:48.70 and maybe two classes they have work program, 00:06:48.74\00:06:50.57 cleaning, and all. 00:06:50.61\00:06:52.07 we have a morning session. 00:06:52.11\00:06:56.34 Then another session starts 00:06:56.38\00:06:58.61 1 o'clock so that lasts up to 4.30. 00:06:58.65\00:07:01.92 And work program actually afternoon, 00:07:01.95\00:07:06.65 3 to 5, then 5 to 6, sports time. 00:07:06.69\00:07:11.89 6.00 to 6.30 cleaning, then they do the worship 00:07:11.93\00:07:17.87 and they have their dinner. 00:07:17.90\00:07:20.27 Then they go to study hall 7 o'clock, 7 to 9 o'clock. 00:07:20.30\00:07:23.74 Then 9.30, they have silent bell. 00:07:23.77\00:07:28.11 So this is our everyday's program. 00:07:28.14\00:07:32.51 They get up early and go to worship, 00:07:32.55\00:07:34.35 each in their own dorm, and start the day with God. 00:07:34.38\00:07:37.59 They all gather and have breakfast 00:07:37.62\00:07:39.35 which is prepared very early 00:07:39.39\00:07:41.02 since breakfast starts at 6.30 in the morning. 00:07:41.06\00:07:44.49 They later have a combined worship 00:07:44.53\00:07:45.93 where announcements are also made. 00:07:45.96\00:07:47.50 Then classes begin 00:07:47.53\00:07:48.86 for the rest of the day at 8 am. 00:07:48.90\00:07:51.33 Once classes end for the day, 00:07:51.37\00:07:52.83 students get free time to have fun with friends. 00:07:52.87\00:07:55.30 They get to play games and sports together. 00:07:55.34\00:07:57.37 Throughout the day 00:07:57.41\00:07:58.74 is where students get assigned work. 00:07:58.77\00:08:00.64 Sajuti had to clean the leaves off the grass 00:08:00.68\00:08:03.01 and sidewalks for the day we interviewed her. 00:08:03.04\00:08:05.68 So a great part of my job 00:08:05.71\00:08:07.42 traveling for Child Impact at the field 00:08:07.45\00:08:09.98 is that we actually get to meet the sponsored children. 00:08:10.02\00:08:13.69 And here in Bangladesh, 00:08:13.72\00:08:15.22 sometimes the language is a bit of a challenge. 00:08:15.26\00:08:18.09 But at the end of the day, 00:08:18.13\00:08:19.59 we all seem to communicate well. 00:08:19.63\00:08:22.10 Now this is Sajuti, and she's 11 years of age. 00:08:22.13\00:08:26.37 Now sadly, her mother died 00:08:26.40\00:08:28.10 and her father is a day laborer. 00:08:28.14\00:08:30.51 And so his income is not reliable, 00:08:30.54\00:08:33.74 and she has four brothers and a sister. 00:08:33.78\00:08:36.88 And sponsorship really not only gives her 00:08:36.91\00:08:40.62 an education, 00:08:40.65\00:08:41.98 but it is bringing relief to her father 00:08:42.02\00:08:44.39 because he is struggling to cope 00:08:44.42\00:08:48.06 with the loss of their mother 00:08:48.09\00:08:49.96 and also generate an income for the family. 00:08:49.99\00:08:53.56 Now she wants to grow up to be a nurse 00:08:53.60\00:08:56.23 and is doing very, very well at school. 00:08:56.26\00:08:59.97 And the father is so grateful for sponsorship 00:09:00.00\00:09:03.81 because it gives him hope. 00:09:03.84\00:09:05.67 It gives his children hope. 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.78 And Sajuti is a excellent example of sponsorship 00:09:07.81\00:09:12.31 and the impact that it's having not only on her life, 00:09:12.35\00:09:15.62 but on her family's life. 00:09:15.65\00:09:17.69 It shows that sponsorship is effective. 00:09:17.72\00:09:21.39 Sajuti's father works as a day laborer, 00:09:21.42\00:09:23.96 and with no mother at home, 00:09:23.99\00:09:25.33 the family struggles to sustain itself. 00:09:25.36\00:09:28.16 Sponsorship is crucial 00:09:28.20\00:09:29.73 to Sajuti's continued attendance at KMMS, 00:09:29.76\00:09:32.97 which can board and feed her 00:09:33.00\00:09:34.47 and reduce the strain on her single father. 00:09:34.50\00:09:37.14 When students or children are in the boarding school, 00:09:37.17\00:09:40.61 they are safe from various kind of problems 00:09:40.64\00:09:46.15 like if they are in village school, 00:09:46.18\00:09:48.92 or in village, so there are many students 00:09:48.95\00:09:52.52 or many children, 00:09:52.55\00:09:54.06 they are free and they don't obey the time, 00:09:54.09\00:09:57.86 they don't follow the time, even they are free... 00:09:57.89\00:10:00.90 Since they are free 00:10:00.93\00:10:02.26 so they can walk here and there. 00:10:02.30\00:10:03.73 They don't care about their punctuality, 00:10:03.77\00:10:06.57 even they don't... 00:10:06.60\00:10:07.94 They are not serious in studies, 00:10:07.97\00:10:09.84 but when they are in boarding school, 00:10:09.87\00:10:11.81 so all of them, they are serious in studies, 00:10:11.84\00:10:14.64 like, if somebody... 00:10:14.68\00:10:17.81 One of his classmates 00:10:17.85\00:10:19.51 is studying hard to get good results, 00:10:19.55\00:10:23.22 so he is encouraged to be study 00:10:23.25\00:10:26.89 and also in the good environment, 00:10:26.92\00:10:29.82 they are happy. 00:10:29.86\00:10:32.46 Outside, in public school, 00:10:32.49\00:10:37.03 teachers are not punctual, always. 00:10:37.07\00:10:40.27 But they come for a moment 00:10:40.30\00:10:43.41 and they teach the students and they go out. 00:10:43.44\00:10:46.91 But in the boarding schools, there are some difference like, 00:10:46.94\00:10:50.25 they are caring, teachers are caring. 00:10:50.28\00:10:52.95 And they're also punctual. 00:10:52.98\00:10:58.32 Every day there should be class. 00:10:58.35\00:11:00.59 They must come to the class and also teachers 00:11:00.62\00:11:04.73 and students must attend to the class 00:11:04.76\00:11:08.93 and they cannot go around here and there. 00:11:08.96\00:11:12.50 So they should obey the system, boarding school system, 00:11:12.53\00:11:17.04 so this is the difference between 00:11:17.07\00:11:20.01 village schools and the boarding school. 00:11:20.04\00:11:23.68 At KMMS, Sajuti has decided to become a nurse, 00:11:23.71\00:11:26.72 and her favorite subject is English, 00:11:26.75\00:11:28.98 a subject she would not have become acquainted with at home. 00:11:29.02\00:11:32.75 She's seen how much KMMS has helped her 00:11:32.79\00:11:35.32 and she really wants to get her siblings 00:11:35.36\00:11:37.23 to go to KMMS as well. 00:11:37.26\00:11:39.49 She has three elder sisters and one brother, 00:11:39.53\00:11:44.20 and they are studying in the other schools. 00:11:44.23\00:11:46.47 But when I talked with her, that time she shared with me, 00:11:46.50\00:11:52.01 "Sir, I am trying my level best 00:11:52.04\00:11:54.81 to bring my sisters and my brothers over here 00:11:54.84\00:12:00.52 so they may get the proper education." 00:12:00.55\00:12:04.09 Within one year, she feels that 00:12:04.12\00:12:06.39 she is getting the proper education 00:12:06.42\00:12:08.19 and good education here. 00:12:08.22\00:12:09.99 So for that reason, 00:12:10.03\00:12:11.49 she is trying her level best to motivate her father 00:12:11.53\00:12:16.46 to bring their brother and sisters over here. 00:12:16.50\00:12:22.00 But his father is very poor. 00:12:22.04\00:12:24.51 Due to the money her father makes, 00:12:24.54\00:12:26.17 it's unlikely that they will be 00:12:26.21\00:12:27.54 able to get the same opportunities as her. 00:12:27.58\00:12:30.31 The only way would be through sponsorship. 00:12:30.35\00:12:32.45 Sajuti managed to get sponsorship 00:12:32.48\00:12:34.02 and that alone is giving her 00:12:34.05\00:12:35.38 a healthy environment to grow and have a bright future. 00:12:35.42\00:12:38.62 Even then, she depends on the continual sponsorship. 00:12:38.65\00:12:42.02 In my role, it's a privilege 00:12:42.06\00:12:44.33 to be able to come and see the schools 00:12:44.36\00:12:46.90 where we have sponsorship like this one in Bangladesh. 00:12:46.93\00:12:50.80 Sponsorship gives hope for education, 00:12:50.83\00:12:53.87 it gives hope for families and it really has an impact. 00:12:53.90\00:12:58.44 Standing here, I can see the difference 00:12:58.47\00:13:01.11 that sponsorship is making. 00:13:01.14\00:13:03.04 And if you don't sponsor a child, 00:13:03.08\00:13:05.11 I'd invite you to sponsor a child 00:13:05.15\00:13:07.78 or make a donation to our unsponsored child fund, 00:13:07.82\00:13:11.65 as there are many children here waiting for sponsorship. 00:13:11.69\00:13:15.12 A couple of years ago, my daughters and I 00:13:20.63\00:13:22.63 had a wonderful opportunity to travel to India. 00:13:22.66\00:13:26.03 And while we were there, 00:13:26.07\00:13:27.40 we met yet another part of our family. 00:13:27.44\00:13:29.54 And that's our sponsored daughter, 00:13:29.57\00:13:30.97 Sheila. 00:13:31.01\00:13:32.34 We've had the privilege of sponsoring Sheila 00:13:32.37\00:13:34.64 through Child Impact International 00:13:34.68\00:13:36.85 for more than three years now. 00:13:36.88\00:13:39.21 And, you know, while we were there, 00:13:39.25\00:13:41.02 she shared with us that her dream 00:13:41.05\00:13:43.45 was to become a nurse. 00:13:43.49\00:13:45.39 Now, what a wonderful privilege it is for us 00:13:45.42\00:13:48.26 now as a family to know that 00:13:48.29\00:13:50.86 she is fulfilling that dream. 00:13:50.89\00:13:53.33 Sheila is now studying to be a nurse. 00:13:53.36\00:13:56.00 She's in college 00:13:56.03\00:13:57.37 and we cannot be happier for her. 00:13:57.40\00:13:59.70 It's been wonderful 00:13:59.73\00:14:01.07 to be part of that journey with her, 00:14:01.10\00:14:03.24 and, you know, sponsoring a child 00:14:03.27\00:14:05.11 through Child Impact, 00:14:05.14\00:14:06.57 it's made an incredible difference 00:14:06.61\00:14:08.28 for our family. 00:14:08.31\00:14:09.74 And I know that for you, sponsoring a child 00:14:09.78\00:14:11.88 can make a difference for you too, 00:14:11.91\00:14:13.98 and most importantly, it can make the difference 00:14:14.02\00:14:16.35 in the life of a child every day. 00:14:16.38\00:14:18.62
