Jim Rennie from Child Impact. 00:00:05.13\00:00:07.60 Well, life has changed. 00:00:07.64\00:00:10.01 The world has changed. 00:00:10.04\00:00:12.01 And we at Child Impact 00:00:12.04\00:00:13.41 are being overwhelmed with requests 00:00:13.44\00:00:15.98 from the country that we operate in. 00:00:16.01\00:00:18.65 Millions of low-paid laborers in India, 00:00:18.68\00:00:21.88 and millions of low-paid clothing workers 00:00:21.92\00:00:24.79 in Bangladesh have no work, 00:00:24.82\00:00:27.42 and there is no government help. 00:00:27.46\00:00:29.52 Some of them will go hungry. 00:00:29.56\00:00:32.16 We are getting requests from churches and schools. 00:00:32.19\00:00:35.93 Yes, and sometimes I feel a bit overwhelmed. 00:00:35.96\00:00:39.27 And we do need funds. 00:00:39.30\00:00:41.40 But I wanna say that right now we have a bigger need. 00:00:41.44\00:00:44.71 I want to challenge that we stop and pray. 00:00:44.74\00:00:48.14 And I wanna ask you to pray for the work of Child Impact 00:00:48.18\00:00:51.85 and other ministries. 00:00:51.88\00:00:53.52 Pray for those who have the virus 00:00:53.55\00:00:56.02 and the families who have lost loved ones. 00:00:56.05\00:00:59.05 Please pray for our doctors and nurses 00:00:59.09\00:01:02.02 and they are first responders because they are giving all. 00:01:02.06\00:01:06.23 We need to stop and become closer to God. 00:01:06.26\00:01:09.83 Let's power our prayer. 00:01:09.86\00:01:12.13 You can help us at childimpact.org 00:01:12.17\00:01:15.00 but you can also pray for us and others from anywhere. 00:01:15.04\00:01:20.24 And just to help us drive with a better prayer life, 00:01:20.28\00:01:23.41 we've produced a special prayer guide. 00:01:23.45\00:01:26.05 And if you go to our website child impact.org, 00:01:26.08\00:01:30.89 you can download it and have a read 00:01:30.92\00:01:33.25 and share it with your family. 00:01:33.29\00:01:36.42 This is another program about our work in Bangladesh. 00:01:36.46\00:01:39.79 And I hope that you enjoy it. 00:01:39.83\00:01:41.26 There are several Adventist schools in Bangladesh 00:01:57.35\00:01:59.58 that are making a difference, but the smaller schools 00:01:59.61\00:02:02.08 that normally aren't heard of are also growing 00:02:02.12\00:02:04.09 and expanding their influence. 00:02:04.12\00:02:06.65 We drove out to see one of the small schools 00:02:06.69\00:02:09.22 who are not only making 00:02:09.26\00:02:10.59 an impact in the community they're in, 00:02:10.63\00:02:12.06 but also spreading the love of the gospel. 00:02:12.09\00:02:14.70 Because of the struggle 00:02:14.73\00:02:16.06 with religion and its influence, 00:02:16.10\00:02:17.43 the gospel has a harder time spreading, 00:02:17.47\00:02:19.63 including these remote areas, 00:02:19.67\00:02:21.80 but education is serving to bring more 00:02:21.84\00:02:23.67 and more families to God. 00:02:23.71\00:02:25.57 This village is very remote. 00:02:25.61\00:02:27.31 And the journey itself was a good example 00:02:27.34\00:02:29.31 of how difficult it can be to spread the gospel 00:02:29.34\00:02:31.75 in these countries. 00:02:31.78\00:02:33.11 The drive itself was a couple hours 00:02:33.15\00:02:34.92 and had no direct access. 00:02:34.95\00:02:36.69 A drive like this might take 30 minutes in America, 00:02:36.72\00:02:40.06 but was closer to three hours to get there in Bangladesh. 00:02:40.09\00:02:43.36 Aside from that, we had to leave the car behind 00:02:43.39\00:02:45.69 and walk deeper into the land 00:02:45.73\00:02:47.13 in order to make it to the school. 00:02:47.16\00:02:49.40 So we've just come down a road 00:02:49.43\00:02:51.93 and now we're walking into this mission school. 00:02:51.97\00:02:56.00 This is apparently a typical Bangladesh 00:02:56.04\00:02:58.27 Mission School, 00:02:58.31\00:02:59.64 a much smaller school than where we're at, 00:02:59.67\00:03:01.81 and we're gonna visit it this morning. 00:03:01.84\00:03:06.82 Aside from how deep we went and how remote it was, 00:03:06.85\00:03:08.95 there always seemed to be a lot of people. 00:03:08.98\00:03:10.99 The density of Bangladesh 00:03:11.02\00:03:12.35 is the 10th highest in the world. 00:03:12.39\00:03:14.86 This has a side effect. 00:03:14.89\00:03:16.39 People are always struggling for food, 00:03:16.42\00:03:18.36 especially families with a lot of children. 00:03:18.39\00:03:21.63 As a result, sponsorship has a second impact. 00:03:21.66\00:03:24.63 It allows students to have food. 00:03:24.67\00:03:27.00 That helps the families 00:03:27.04\00:03:28.37 not have to work as hard to find money for food 00:03:28.40\00:03:30.54 and helps children not grow up starving. 00:03:30.57\00:03:33.27 This village school has a lot of help 00:03:33.31\00:03:35.41 for the children within the village. 00:03:35.44\00:03:37.35 They are able to educate the children 00:03:37.38\00:03:39.01 and have a place for the kids while the parents work. 00:03:39.05\00:03:41.98 The children don't live at the school, 00:03:42.02\00:03:43.99 so they still stay at home, 00:03:44.02\00:03:45.69 but they are served food at the school 00:03:45.72\00:03:47.52 which helps them be healthy 00:03:47.56\00:03:48.89 and most importantly not have to work. 00:03:48.92\00:03:51.13 These small villages cannot make enough money 00:03:51.16\00:03:53.33 if only the parents are working. 00:03:53.36\00:03:55.36 A lot of the time these young children 00:03:55.40\00:03:56.90 will need to begin working in order to help the families. 00:03:56.93\00:04:00.00 This keeps them uneducated 00:04:00.04\00:04:01.57 and they have no chance of leaving 00:04:01.60\00:04:03.14 and improving their lives. 00:04:03.17\00:04:05.27 The village school is very old and rundown. 00:04:05.31\00:04:08.01 They mainly use the school for living and cooking 00:04:08.04\00:04:10.01 while the actual education takes place 00:04:10.05\00:04:12.15 at the small church by the school. 00:04:12.18\00:04:14.92 Here they're able to teach the children 00:04:14.95\00:04:16.79 and give them a safe environment to grow. 00:04:16.82\00:04:18.82 The fact that they get sponsorship 00:04:18.85\00:04:20.42 changes their entire future. 00:04:20.46\00:04:22.22 When we finally arrived, a warm welcome awaits us. 00:04:39.04\00:04:42.04 The teacher at the school sat down with Jim 00:04:42.08\00:04:44.31 to talk about operations there. 00:04:44.35\00:04:47.15 So, tell me your name? 00:04:47.18\00:04:49.18 My name is []. 00:04:49.22\00:04:50.92 Okay. And how long have you been here? 00:04:50.95\00:04:55.36 Four years. 00:04:55.39\00:04:56.73 So you've been in this village for four years? 00:04:56.76\00:04:58.89 Yes. Yes. 00:04:58.93\00:05:00.26 I'm working here four years. 00:05:00.30\00:05:01.90 And tell me what you do? 00:05:01.93\00:05:04.03 You are the teacher? 00:05:04.07\00:05:05.57 Yeah, I mean, I am teaching also and preaching also. 00:05:05.60\00:05:08.67 Preaching. How many students do you have? 00:05:08.70\00:05:11.61 Twenty-one students. Twenty-one. 00:05:11.64\00:05:13.48 Yeah. Yeah. 00:05:13.51\00:05:14.84 And where do these students come from, just nearby? 00:05:14.88\00:05:19.68 For some students, their house is near 00:05:19.71\00:05:23.08 and some student house is far. 00:05:23.12\00:05:24.69 Right. 00:05:24.72\00:05:26.05 But they're all day students, they walk here every day? 00:05:26.09\00:05:29.12 Yes. Right. 00:05:29.16\00:05:30.49 How many of your children are sponsored, all of them? 00:05:30.53\00:05:34.76 No, except two. 00:05:34.80\00:05:36.43 Two. Yeah. 00:05:36.46\00:05:37.80 But you, sponsorship is very important. 00:05:37.83\00:05:40.04 Yes, yes. 00:05:40.07\00:05:41.40 Sponsorship is very important. 00:05:41.44\00:05:43.00 Without a sponsorship, 00:05:43.04\00:05:44.54 we cannot provide the foods also. 00:05:44.57\00:05:46.44 Right. 00:05:46.47\00:05:47.81 So this is true village operation very small, 00:05:47.84\00:05:52.31 but this man and his wife are very, very committed. 00:05:52.35\00:05:55.68 And Bangladesh has a lot of these mission schools 00:05:55.72\00:05:59.99 and they're really having an impact on these villages. 00:06:00.02\00:06:03.09 And it's real privilege to be able to visit here today. 00:06:03.12\00:06:06.36 He lives in the school's original facility 00:06:06.39\00:06:08.23 which is deteriorating, he gave us a tour. 00:06:08.26\00:06:10.47 The building behind me serves as the residence 00:06:10.50\00:06:13.97 for the pastor teacher. 00:06:14.00\00:06:16.10 And in the corner, they have the classroom. 00:06:16.14\00:06:19.31 The classrooms are a bit small and a bit rough. 00:06:19.34\00:06:21.94 And so the children also meet in the church. 00:06:21.98\00:06:25.65 And we're gonna go over 00:06:25.68\00:06:27.02 and have a look at that church shortly. 00:06:27.05\00:06:28.38 All these children come from very poor families 00:06:42.83\00:06:46.03 mainly they're all, 00:06:46.07\00:06:47.40 their parents are farm laborers. 00:06:47.44\00:06:49.50 And so life is a struggle. 00:06:49.54\00:06:51.54 And so being able to have their child in a school 00:06:51.57\00:06:54.91 with a daily meal makes a real difference. 00:06:54.94\00:06:57.91 This is a different example of our sponsorship 00:06:57.95\00:07:01.38 impacts in this part of the country. 00:07:01.42\00:07:04.39 And this is [] and he is a sponsored, 00:07:04.42\00:07:07.82 Child Impact sponsored child. 00:07:07.86\00:07:10.43 Now his father and mother are rural labors. 00:07:10.46\00:07:14.06 And that's not a big income at all. 00:07:14.10\00:07:16.43 They have a very simple home and he has one brother, 00:07:16.46\00:07:21.97 and so being able to come to this mission school, 00:07:22.00\00:07:24.44 the parents are really proud that he can have an education. 00:07:24.47\00:07:28.88 The family do struggle. 00:07:28.91\00:07:30.85 And so to have his education paid for, 00:07:30.88\00:07:34.38 he gets a lunch meal. 00:07:34.42\00:07:36.48 And he was just telling me through the translation 00:07:36.52\00:07:41.02 that he likes to play football and cricket. 00:07:41.06\00:07:43.53 Now being from New Zealand, 00:07:43.56\00:07:44.89 I understand the game of cricket. 00:07:44.93\00:07:47.20 So I can relate a little bit 00:07:47.23\00:07:48.96 of where I'm from when I'm in Bangladesh. 00:07:49.00\00:07:53.74 So when you're here in a mission school, 00:07:53.77\00:07:55.44 you get a different perspective of what sponsorship can do. 00:07:55.47\00:07:59.54 And so Child Impact is really excited 00:07:59.57\00:08:02.54 that it can sponsor children 00:08:02.58\00:08:04.81 at this Bangladesh Mission School. 00:08:04.85\00:08:08.42 Then the children assembled for lunch, 00:08:08.45\00:08:10.22 washed their personal dishes 00:08:10.25\00:08:11.72 and were served a balanced meal. 00:08:11.75\00:08:13.15 An elderly man approach the facility 00:08:23.67\00:08:25.83 during lunch, and asked to be served as well. 00:08:25.87\00:08:28.70 It was a testament to the difficult conditions 00:08:28.74\00:08:30.84 there despite the idyllic pastoral setting. 00:08:30.87\00:08:34.54 In places like this feeding and educating children 00:08:34.58\00:08:36.98 makes all the difference. 00:08:37.01\00:08:38.41 Sponsorship makes that possible. 00:08:38.45\00:08:40.32 Even though only 22 children attend the school, 00:08:40.35\00:08:42.88 the change in their lives ripples outward. 00:08:42.92\00:08:47.66 So just earlier we introduced Shardene. 00:08:47.69\00:08:50.56 And now we've come back 00:08:50.59\00:08:52.23 behind the school to a village and his parents, 00:08:52.26\00:08:56.03 this is his house, 00:08:56.06\00:08:57.57 and his mother and father are laborers. 00:08:57.60\00:09:00.14 And this is his mother. 00:09:00.17\00:09:01.90 And they are very appreciative of sponsorship. 00:09:01.94\00:09:05.44 And that has a big impact on their lives, 00:09:05.47\00:09:08.41 that he can be sponsored in the local mission school. 00:09:08.44\00:09:14.02 And there's just thousands of villages like this. 00:09:14.05\00:09:17.32 This is where life has seemed for these people. 00:09:17.35\00:09:20.82 It's a delight to meet them. They're very welcoming. 00:09:20.86\00:09:24.09 This is a big outreach 00:09:24.13\00:09:25.46 for the church in this community, 00:09:25.49\00:09:27.43 but it also gives these people who are mainly farm laborers, 00:09:27.46\00:09:31.83 a big opportunity for their children, 00:09:31.87\00:09:34.44 they have an education. 00:09:34.47\00:09:36.04 So they live a very basic life, 00:09:36.07\00:09:39.41 they probably don't travel out of this village, 00:09:39.44\00:09:42.18 but having a school is just ideal for them, 00:09:42.21\00:09:46.58 and then also a church to worship. 00:09:46.61\00:09:48.78 Before we left, 00:09:48.82\00:09:50.15 a woman offered a performance of thanks 00:09:50.19\00:09:52.02 for the assistance being brought to her village. 00:09:52.05\00:09:56.39 Before we can leave 00:09:56.42\00:09:57.76 a command performance of the drone 00:09:57.79\00:09:59.19 was a must for the villagers. 00:09:59.23\00:10:00.56 While we were there, 00:10:06.40\00:10:07.74 the villagers were excited to see the camera, 00:10:07.77\00:10:09.67 the drones and even see themselves on camera. 00:10:09.70\00:10:12.81 It's not something they're used to 00:10:12.84\00:10:14.18 because it's just not possible for them to buy 00:10:14.21\00:10:16.41 or even be aware 00:10:16.44\00:10:17.78 of what happens outside of where they live. 00:10:17.81\00:10:19.21 The difference between 00:10:23.92\00:10:25.25 the two schools is considerable. 00:10:25.29\00:10:28.56 At the rural school, 00:10:28.59\00:10:29.92 the children are taught inside a small chapel 00:10:29.96\00:10:31.66 for want of a better school building 00:10:31.69\00:10:33.13 and eat their meals outside. 00:10:33.16\00:10:34.93 At KMMS multiple buildings worth of classrooms 00:10:34.96\00:10:37.40 and a covered dining hall are the standard experience, 00:10:37.43\00:10:40.50 but the unifying factor 00:10:40.54\00:10:41.87 is the impact the children receive. 00:10:41.90\00:10:43.61 So this morning, 00:10:48.61\00:10:51.01 the reality of life here in Bangladesh, 00:10:51.05\00:10:53.55 and I guess what we experience 00:10:53.58\00:10:55.88 really sort of hits your heart. 00:10:55.92\00:10:59.39 You suddenly are faced with the struggles in life. 00:10:59.42\00:11:03.56 You're faced with the poverty. 00:11:03.59\00:11:05.86 And I think it's things we fully don't understand. 00:11:05.89\00:11:10.43 And so we left the school 00:11:10.47\00:11:12.20 and we brought those two children 00:11:12.23\00:11:13.94 to visit their mother. 00:11:13.97\00:11:15.64 She's a widow, she really can raise money. 00:11:15.67\00:11:20.28 She does menial jobs in houses. 00:11:20.31\00:11:23.98 And the reality is sponsorship gives her hope. 00:11:24.01\00:11:28.25 Sponsorship is the only answer for her, 00:11:28.28\00:11:32.02 for her children to have an education, 00:11:32.05\00:11:34.62 and for her children to be fed. 00:11:34.66\00:11:37.53 And just meeting here, such a happy face, 00:11:37.56\00:11:41.50 such a pleasant personality, 00:11:41.53\00:11:45.23 although we couldn't understand each other, 00:11:45.27\00:11:47.50 the reality is that 00:11:47.54\00:11:49.07 she would not be able to feed these children 00:11:49.10\00:11:52.07 and she struggles day to day. 00:11:52.11\00:11:54.31 So you get to really understand 00:11:54.34\00:11:56.75 that sponsorship is just not an education, 00:11:56.78\00:12:00.12 it's giving that family hope. 00:12:00.15\00:12:05.39 Inside the village, this poor, there is a beacon of hope, 00:12:05.42\00:12:09.16 something that shows 00:12:09.19\00:12:10.53 the possibilities for other people. 00:12:10.56\00:12:12.36 Many families want their children 00:12:12.39\00:12:13.73 to be educated there, 00:12:13.76\00:12:15.10 but it all comes down to sponsorship. 00:12:15.13\00:12:17.60 We are growing our support, but we don't want to stop. 00:12:17.63\00:12:20.67 Each visit is proof of how much more there is to do 00:12:20.70\00:12:23.77 and how much of a difference it keeps making. 00:12:23.81\00:12:26.37 This is just another school in a village 00:12:26.41\00:12:28.44 and the others have the same story, 00:12:28.48\00:12:30.58 one of hope, but also of opportunity. 00:12:30.61\00:12:32.95 I'm Shawn Boonstra, 00:13:04.68\00:13:06.01
