Hi, I'm Jim Rennie, 00:00:04.70\00:00:06.84 CEO of Child Impact International. 00:00:06.87\00:00:10.91 In the last two weeks, 00:00:10.94\00:00:12.54 we've been telling you about the rice and health appeal 00:00:12.57\00:00:16.11 where we're going to help 00:00:16.14\00:00:17.48 Adventist mission schools in India, 00:00:17.51\00:00:20.15 Bangladesh and Myanmar with rice, 00:00:20.18\00:00:23.25 soap and health education to help them 00:00:23.28\00:00:26.76 in the current crisis. 00:00:26.79\00:00:30.79 I just want to thank you for your support. 00:00:30.83\00:00:33.73 Your response has been a huge blessing. 00:00:33.76\00:00:37.13 Right now schools are shut down, 00:00:37.17\00:00:39.80 but it is also the school holidays. 00:00:39.83\00:00:42.67 We've still rush some soap and some rice 00:00:42.70\00:00:45.64 to key schools as the children 00:00:45.67\00:00:48.14 who come from destitute families, 00:00:48.18\00:00:50.58 orphan and staff children are still there. 00:00:50.61\00:00:54.62 Our field staff have done really well to achieve this. 00:00:54.65\00:01:00.59 In these countries, millions have lost their jobs 00:01:00.62\00:01:04.26 and with no government assistance are in big trouble. 00:01:04.29\00:01:07.93 And the basics like rice are increasing in price. 00:01:07.96\00:01:13.10 We now have the supplies for when the kids return. 00:01:13.13\00:01:16.77 Thanks again, you have been really great. 00:01:16.81\00:01:19.81 You can still give it at our website, 00:01:19.84\00:01:22.18 childimpact.org. 00:01:22.21\00:01:26.41 The program that you're about to watch 00:01:26.45\00:01:28.75 is one in a new series about our work in Bangladesh. 00:01:28.78\00:01:32.85 So please enjoy it. 00:01:32.89\00:01:34.89 And by the way, the kids say thanks. 00:01:34.92\00:01:37.09 As of 2015, the most recent available year for records, 00:02:01.55\00:02:05.55 there are 150 million orphans in the world. 00:02:05.59\00:02:10.23 The South Asia region where Bangladesh 00:02:10.26\00:02:12.66 is located is home to over a quarter of them. 00:02:12.69\00:02:17.30 Bangladesh struggles with child malnourishment 00:02:17.33\00:02:20.64 and child marriage disproportionately 00:02:20.67\00:02:22.97 affects orphans. 00:02:23.00\00:02:24.87 But on the ground, the situation can vary. 00:02:24.91\00:02:29.01 Kellogg-Mookerjee Memorial Seminary, 00:02:29.04\00:02:31.15 an Adventist boarding school in rural Bangladesh 00:02:31.18\00:02:34.45 has about 400 students. 00:02:34.48\00:02:37.39 Half of those students come 00:02:37.42\00:02:38.75 from financially difficult backgrounds 00:02:38.79\00:02:40.99 with parents underemployed or otherwise struggling. 00:02:41.02\00:02:45.13 But the other half of those students 00:02:45.16\00:02:46.49 face a different challenge. 00:02:46.53\00:02:48.60 They have lost one or both of their parents. 00:02:48.63\00:02:52.33 Between the boys' and girls' dormitories on the KMMS campus 00:02:52.37\00:02:56.24 sits a sizable orphanage 00:02:56.27\00:02:58.11 which currently houses around 100 children. 00:02:58.14\00:03:03.08 This is the story of these children 00:03:03.11\00:03:04.78 and the hope they have found at KMMS. 00:03:04.81\00:03:10.19 This story is of Praveen Beroy, 00:03:10.22\00:03:12.39 age eight who has been at KMMS for two years. 00:03:12.42\00:03:17.03 Praveen is in kindergarten and sometimes carries himself 00:03:17.06\00:03:19.89 with a very dry, serious demeanor. 00:03:19.93\00:03:22.16 My name is Praveen Beroy. 00:03:22.20\00:03:23.70 But other times, 00:03:28.00\00:03:29.34 he can be just like any other kid. 00:03:29.37\00:03:30.71 Praveen seriousness may stem from his background. 00:03:41.78\00:03:44.82 Yeah, Praveen, he came from one rural village, 00:03:44.85\00:03:50.53 that village called Kadambari and his father passed away, 00:03:50.56\00:03:56.50 and now he has only his mother 00:03:56.53\00:04:01.00 and elder sister 00:04:01.04\00:04:02.94 and one elder brother. 00:04:02.97\00:04:06.14 And elder brother living 00:04:06.17\00:04:08.11 with his mother and elder sister, 00:04:08.14\00:04:12.51 she's studying here with Praveen. 00:04:12.55\00:04:16.08 And his mother is so poor, though men, 00:04:16.12\00:04:22.09 they are not getting the proper jobs 00:04:22.12\00:04:25.23 and many men's they are not, 00:04:25.26\00:04:28.86 give them proper job and if they're having the job, 00:04:28.90\00:04:34.84 but they're not getting the proper salary or wages. 00:04:34.87\00:04:38.54 So, for that reason, 00:04:38.57\00:04:40.58 his mother is unable to pay their education fees. 00:04:40.61\00:04:45.15 If Praveen could not attend KMMS, 00:04:45.18\00:04:46.98 he would likely follow the path of his brother. 00:04:47.02\00:04:49.62 Most children in Bangladesh will leave school by age eight, 00:04:49.65\00:04:53.12 Praveen's age. 00:04:53.15\00:04:54.69 Praveen's brother Tamale is 11 and already seeking work. 00:04:54.72\00:04:58.86 One of his brother, he's at home with her mother. 00:04:58.89\00:05:02.73 And he is not interested to come to boarding school. 00:05:02.76\00:05:06.33 But I know that her mother is, 00:05:06.37\00:05:09.70 his mother is working very hard to... 00:05:09.74\00:05:13.61 and for family 00:05:13.64\00:05:15.91 and she is hopeless. 00:05:15.94\00:05:20.42 As a half orphan, 00:05:20.45\00:05:21.78 Praveen lives in the on campus orphanage, 00:05:21.82\00:05:24.19 where in contrast to many of the countries 00:05:24.22\00:05:26.02 millions of orphans and half orphans, 00:05:26.05\00:05:27.92 he is safe from human trafficking 00:05:27.96\00:05:29.92 and child labor. 00:05:29.96\00:05:31.29 Child Impact CEO Jim Rennie took time 00:05:34.06\00:05:36.43 to visit the orphanage and learn more about 00:05:36.46\00:05:38.73 their care and keeping. 00:05:38.77\00:05:41.80 While it's time to introduce another sponsored child, 00:05:41.84\00:05:45.31 a child that's sponsored by Child Impact. 00:05:45.34\00:05:48.74 And I'm still at KMMS School in Bangladesh, 00:05:48.78\00:05:52.55 and this is Praveen, and he's eight years of age. 00:05:52.58\00:05:56.89 Now sadly, his father died and his mother is a cook. 00:05:56.92\00:06:01.46 And actually sometimes she goes and works on the road. 00:06:01.49\00:06:05.76 Can you imagine it, doing the heavy lifting? 00:06:05.79\00:06:08.60 She's real desperate for her son to have a future. 00:06:08.63\00:06:12.43 And she's just so excited that he can come to the school. 00:06:12.47\00:06:16.37 And she's grateful for the sponsorship. 00:06:16.40\00:06:19.17 Now he's got a brother aged 11, and a sister aged 10. 00:06:19.21\00:06:23.91 And I spoke to his teacher, 00:06:23.95\00:06:26.41 and he's really good at his schoolwork 00:06:26.45\00:06:29.35 and loves reading. 00:06:29.38\00:06:30.85 And that's so important. 00:06:30.89\00:06:32.55 And as you sit here, you see the difference. 00:06:32.59\00:06:35.26 You look him in the face. 00:06:35.29\00:06:36.62 Look at this young man. 00:06:36.66\00:06:37.99 He's so grateful for sponsorship. 00:06:38.03\00:06:40.53 And his mother is so grateful for sponsorship 00:06:40.56\00:06:43.93 because she's really struggling in life 00:06:43.97\00:06:46.23 to support these three children. 00:06:46.27\00:06:48.47 And you know the exciting thing? 00:06:48.50\00:06:50.11 He wants to be a doctor. 00:06:50.14\00:06:52.01 He wants to have a future and he will have a future, 00:06:52.04\00:06:55.58 and his sponsor is having an impact on him, 00:06:55.61\00:06:59.05 having an impact on his family and giving him a future. 00:06:59.08\00:07:02.85 So sponsorship, when you look at this young man 00:07:02.88\00:07:05.39 on the face is making a real difference. 00:07:05.42\00:07:10.03 Oh, is it true, they're all orphans? 00:07:10.06\00:07:12.29 Orphans. 00:07:12.33\00:07:14.20 Is he an orphan? 00:07:14.23\00:07:16.06 Some are semi. Yeah. 00:07:16.10\00:07:18.10 And some are full. 00:07:18.13\00:07:19.47 And there are a lot of them that are single mothers. 00:07:19.50\00:07:21.47 Yeah. 00:07:21.50\00:07:22.84 One of the unique aspects about the school 00:07:22.87\00:07:25.21 is that right in the center of it, 00:07:25.24\00:07:27.18 it has an orphanage, 00:07:27.21\00:07:28.71 and there are 91 children 00:07:28.74\00:07:30.81 they are either orphans or semi-orphans. 00:07:30.85\00:07:33.58 And Child Impact is just so excited that 00:07:33.62\00:07:36.32 it can play a role in this community, 00:07:36.35\00:07:38.89 supporting these children with a real need. 00:07:38.92\00:07:41.86 And look at these two guys here. 00:07:41.89\00:07:43.83 It's just so exciting to see these kids, 00:07:43.86\00:07:46.90 because not only are they given a chance, 00:07:46.93\00:07:49.60 they're given an education. 00:07:49.63\00:07:51.67 And the mom simply just can't cope 00:07:51.70\00:07:54.10 with the cost of living or even bringing the child up. 00:07:54.14\00:07:58.01 Now the unique thing is here that they're in this building 00:07:58.04\00:08:01.58 for when they're young. 00:08:01.61\00:08:03.18 But when they get to a certain age, 00:08:03.21\00:08:05.35 they go over to the boarding part of the school. 00:08:05.38\00:08:08.22 So they're given a future. 00:08:08.25\00:08:09.72 They feel comfortable here. 00:08:09.75\00:08:11.55 They feel secure here. 00:08:11.59\00:08:13.56 And they're given an education. 00:08:13.59\00:08:15.66 And so we're really excited about the mission happening 00:08:15.69\00:08:19.93 in this school for orphans. 00:08:19.96\00:08:21.60 And we're happy that we can support it. 00:08:21.63\00:08:27.20 We have the opportunity to give Praveen and his sister 00:08:27.24\00:08:30.04 a chance to see their mother again. 00:08:30.07\00:08:33.58 It had been over a year since Praveen 00:08:33.61\00:08:35.48 and his sister had seen her. 00:08:35.51\00:08:37.18 And when we found out, 00:08:37.21\00:08:38.55 we took the opportunity to take them with us 00:08:38.58\00:08:41.05 as we were going to visit other schools. 00:08:41.08\00:08:44.49 Even though they were camera shy, 00:08:44.52\00:08:46.15 they were very excited to see their mother, 00:08:46.19\00:08:48.29 and it was great to see everybody happy 00:08:48.32\00:08:50.36 once the cameras were off. 00:08:50.39\00:08:52.73 They were able to stay 00:08:52.76\00:08:54.10 with each other for half the day. 00:08:54.13\00:08:55.46 And when we got them back, 00:08:55.50\00:08:56.83 Praveen had even gotten a haircut. 00:08:56.87\00:08:59.43 The mother later told us how happy she was to see him. 00:08:59.47\00:09:03.87 With the money the mother makes, 00:09:03.91\00:09:05.41 there's no way of going to see Praveen and his sister, 00:09:05.44\00:09:08.44 so they have to stay at the school. 00:09:08.48\00:09:10.58 Like Praveen, many of these children 00:09:10.61\00:09:12.31 have no other alternative and struggle to make it 00:09:12.35\00:09:15.22 with their families. 00:09:15.25\00:09:16.65 And if it were not for the opportunities 00:09:16.69\00:09:18.62 for paid education, 00:09:18.65\00:09:20.26 Praveen would probably be working 00:09:20.29\00:09:22.09 and helping his mother make money in order to survive. 00:09:22.12\00:09:25.03 It's difficult to see 00:09:25.06\00:09:26.39 these children struggling at such a young age, 00:09:26.43\00:09:28.43 having to grow up fast and deal with hardship 00:09:28.46\00:09:30.50 before they even have a chance 00:09:30.53\00:09:32.00 at living a normal life as a child. 00:09:32.03\00:09:34.47 So we left the school this morning 00:09:34.50\00:09:37.21 and have driven about one and a half hours. 00:09:37.24\00:09:40.54 And we originally 00:09:40.58\00:09:41.98 were going to come and see his mother, 00:09:42.01\00:09:43.81 but the daughter wanted to come 00:09:43.85\00:09:45.98 and she was very excited that they could come 00:09:46.01\00:09:48.78 and then meet the mother. 00:09:48.82\00:09:50.39 And this is where their home is. 00:09:50.42\00:09:53.15 The mother is a laborer and goes out 00:09:53.19\00:09:55.69 and does various cooking jobs. 00:09:55.72\00:09:58.09 And so, it's just given us an insight. 00:09:58.13\00:10:01.06 I want you to come and translate for me. 00:10:01.10\00:10:03.33 She's very happy. Very happy. 00:10:10.24\00:10:12.71 And she one of them, top in the class. 00:10:12.74\00:10:16.91 Yes, last year. 00:10:16.95\00:10:19.15 Everything serves multiple purposes 00:10:19.18\00:10:21.12 at a school like KMMS, 00:10:21.15\00:10:22.98 and the orphanage dining hall is no different. 00:10:23.02\00:10:25.95 Rice harvested from the on campus rice paddy 00:10:25.99\00:10:28.52 is stored there before being taken into town. 00:10:28.56\00:10:34.40 And that serves another purpose too, 00:10:34.43\00:10:36.77 entertainment for the kids. 00:10:36.80\00:10:39.57 Many of the children in the orphanage 00:10:39.60\00:10:41.44 would not be able to attend school 00:10:41.47\00:10:43.14 of any kind without help. 00:10:43.17\00:10:45.67 Without housing or education, 00:10:45.71\00:10:47.58 orphan children are the most vulnerable group 00:10:47.61\00:10:49.84 to human trafficking. 00:10:49.88\00:10:51.71 But the children in the orphanage 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.08 at KMMS are safe. 00:10:53.11\00:10:54.48 Orphans. 00:10:57.65\00:10:59.25 Well, we must sympathize with orphan students. 00:10:59.29\00:11:03.59 And even the donors also very much sympathize. 00:11:03.63\00:11:06.86 And we try your best to take the best care 00:11:06.90\00:11:09.86 within our limitation on means. 00:11:09.90\00:11:12.87 And even our teachers, they should, 00:11:12.90\00:11:16.17 they must love and care for them. 00:11:16.20\00:11:18.54 Because most of the orphans, they come very small. 00:11:18.57\00:11:21.21 So they get, you know, mother care or even father care 00:11:21.24\00:11:25.88 and they are all cared here, 00:11:25.91\00:11:27.55 and we have a very old experienced 00:11:27.58\00:11:29.08 mother here, Mrs. Biswas. 00:11:29.12\00:11:32.32 And she is a registered nurse. 00:11:32.35\00:11:34.82 So she takes good care of these children. 00:11:34.86\00:11:37.99 Even we help our administration, 00:11:38.03\00:11:39.79 we take care even whenever any donor comes, 00:11:39.83\00:11:43.53 we share our, their needs. 00:11:43.57\00:11:47.24 We pass emphasize their needs, orphans needs, not other needs. 00:11:47.27\00:11:51.74 Because they are the more helpless and all. 00:11:51.77\00:11:54.31 And even, whenever thus, 00:11:54.34\00:11:56.54 most of the times orphan student 00:11:56.58\00:11:57.91 they do not have shoes or no dress. 00:11:57.95\00:12:01.12 Even teachers we try to help buying for them. 00:12:01.15\00:12:05.75 Teachers buy from their own pocket. 00:12:05.79\00:12:08.62 Whenever one boy has no shoes, we buy for them. 00:12:08.66\00:12:12.79 Even during the Christmas time, 00:12:12.83\00:12:14.43 we try to make 00:12:14.46\00:12:15.80 a very special program for them, 00:12:15.83\00:12:17.90 and we try to give warm clothes also for them. 00:12:17.93\00:12:21.70 So usually they are... 00:12:21.74\00:12:24.27 We do our best. 00:12:24.31\00:12:26.37 Even I as school principal, 00:12:26.41\00:12:28.18 I don't go home at Christmas time, 00:12:28.21\00:12:30.35 I spent time with them 00:12:30.38\00:12:31.71 because you understand that they feel they will care. 00:12:31.75\00:12:37.15 Are there a lot of orphans?
