Impact is committed 00:00:21.78\00:00:23.28 to making a difference in the lives of children 00:00:23.32\00:00:25.65 and those who are in need. 00:00:25.69\00:00:27.26 Serving communities in India, Nepal, 00:00:27.29\00:00:29.56 Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, 00:00:29.59\00:00:32.09 and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:32.13\00:00:34.53 For the last 50 years, 00:00:34.56\00:00:36.13 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people 00:00:36.16\00:00:39.10 and their investment is proving infinite returns, 00:00:39.13\00:00:41.94 driven by the dedication 00:00:41.97\00:00:43.30 to development projects 00:00:49.81\00:00:52.25 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.28\00:00:54.38 Their outreach expands from child rescue operations, 00:00:54.42\00:00:57.49 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:00:57.52\00:01:00.46 and the blind children 00:01:00.49\00:01:01.82 giving them a sense of place, a home, but above all, 00:01:01.86\00:01:05.53 Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:05.56\00:01:08.46 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:08.50\00:01:11.87 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:11.90\00:01:14.54 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:14.57\00:01:16.40 Bangladesh sits at the juncture of two major tectonic plates 00:01:31.49\00:01:35.56 that over time have loaded with stress 00:01:35.59\00:01:37.63 and present the risk of a very damaging earthquake. 00:01:37.66\00:01:41.96 Under the country lies an extension of the fault line 00:01:42.00\00:01:44.40 responsible for the catastrophic 2004 00:01:44.43\00:01:47.07 Boxing Day tsunami that killed 200,000 people 00:01:47.10\00:01:50.24 in Southern Asia. 00:01:50.27\00:01:52.97 Building collapses in Bangladesh 00:01:53.01\00:01:54.58 have been a globally visible concern 00:01:54.61\00:01:56.64 since the 2013 00:01:56.68\00:01:58.31 Rana Plaza collapse in Dhaka 00:01:58.35\00:02:00.48 which killed over 1,000 people and injured even more. 00:02:00.52\00:02:03.69 While Bangladesh has building codes, 00:02:07.49\00:02:09.29 they are poorly enforced, 00:02:09.32\00:02:10.83 and have only recently begun 00:02:10.86\00:02:12.46 to adhere to develop standards. 00:02:12.49\00:02:15.90 This situation poses a problem for older buildings 00:02:15.93\00:02:18.90 which may not have been built 00:02:18.93\00:02:20.34 with modern safety standards in mind, 00:02:20.37\00:02:22.40 and whose structures have been ravaged 00:02:22.44\00:02:23.91 by the country's humid climate 00:02:23.94\00:02:25.47 and made vulnerable to disasters. 00:02:25.51\00:02:28.24 At Kellogg Mookerjee Memorial Seminary or KMMS 00:02:28.28\00:02:31.78 there's one such building. 00:02:31.81\00:02:34.08 This building sits at the front of the campus 00:02:34.12\00:02:36.28 and was built almost 100 years ago. 00:02:36.32\00:02:38.95 What can institution that cares about 00:02:38.99\00:02:40.76 the safety of its students do in such a scenario? 00:02:40.79\00:02:43.89 Part of the answer 00:02:43.93\00:02:45.26 lies in the story of the director of BCSS, 00:02:45.29\00:02:47.86 Child Impact's implementing partner in Bangladesh. 00:02:47.90\00:02:51.53 Hi, this is Milton Das 00:02:51.57\00:02:54.10 from Bangladesh Children Sponsorship Services 00:02:54.14\00:02:57.01 we call BCSS, 00:02:57.04\00:02:59.34 and BCSS is an unique department 00:02:59.37\00:03:03.24 of Seventh-day Adventist Church in Bangladesh. 00:03:03.28\00:03:07.68 BCSS works for underprivileged children 00:03:07.72\00:03:11.32 in Bangladesh, 00:03:11.35\00:03:12.85 to go to the... 00:03:12.89\00:03:16.02 to help the children to go to the schools, 00:03:16.06\00:03:19.63 especially to the Adventist schools, 00:03:19.66\00:03:22.83 where they have the wonderful campuses 00:03:22.86\00:03:26.87 to have the marvelous education, 00:03:26.90\00:03:31.31 the co-education 00:03:31.34\00:03:33.41 and the Christian education. 00:03:33.44\00:03:37.01 The staff of BCSS and KMMS come from diverse backgrounds, 00:03:37.05\00:03:41.38 but are united in their highly personal dedication 00:03:41.42\00:03:43.85 with Child Impact International to helping children. 00:03:43.89\00:03:47.39 Their childhood experiences are often not unlike 00:03:47.42\00:03:49.92 those of the children they help. 00:03:49.96\00:03:52.03 This includes Milton, who works closely with KMMS 00:03:52.06\00:03:55.20 and Child Impact. 00:03:55.23\00:03:56.56 Milton came to KMMS as a child 00:03:56.60\00:03:58.43 and now works as a director for BCSS, 00:03:58.47\00:04:01.57 which is an implementing partner in Bangladesh 00:04:01.60\00:04:03.74 for Child Impact International. 00:04:03.77\00:04:06.27 Jim recently sat down with him to learn his story. 00:04:06.31\00:04:09.84 We were happy family. 00:04:09.88\00:04:12.71 And, but when while I was 00:04:12.75\00:04:16.82 five years of my age, 00:04:16.85\00:04:19.02 my father passed away. 00:04:19.05\00:04:21.36 And my brother was about two, 00:04:21.39\00:04:25.99 and my sister was not yet born. 00:04:26.03\00:04:29.60 And my mother was pregnant that time. 00:04:29.63\00:04:34.10 And it was really a disaster 00:04:34.14\00:04:35.90 for our family to survive and maintain, 00:04:35.94\00:04:40.54 because my father was only earning member 00:04:40.58\00:04:43.95 of the family. 00:04:43.98\00:04:45.31 My mother was illiterate woman, 00:04:45.35\00:04:49.22 married while she was 00:04:49.25\00:04:53.02 a teenager 00:04:53.05\00:04:55.56 and she was just finished eighth grade. 00:04:55.59\00:04:59.03 So she was just a housewife 00:04:59.06\00:05:01.46 and it was really miserable for us. 00:05:01.50\00:05:04.30 And that's then came the sponsorship organization. 00:05:04.33\00:05:08.90 And they sponsored me and my brother, eventually, 00:05:08.94\00:05:14.44 my sister even 00:05:14.48\00:05:16.11 so that we can go to Adventist schools. 00:05:16.14\00:05:18.95 And even here I am 00:05:18.98\00:05:20.68 at Kellogg Mookerjee Memorial Seminary and School, 00:05:20.72\00:05:24.99 and in this school I did my high school. 00:05:25.02\00:05:28.96 It was really great blessing for me 00:05:28.99\00:05:32.93 that through this sponsorship, 00:05:32.96\00:05:36.23 I could study and even my brother 00:05:36.26\00:05:38.93 and my sister could study 00:05:38.97\00:05:41.00 and we all are blessed 00:05:41.04\00:05:44.77 so much that we can be our own now. 00:05:44.81\00:05:48.91 And we can support our family 00:05:48.94\00:05:50.81 and my mother and the community. 00:05:50.85\00:05:55.12 Milton journey from a struggling child orphan 00:05:55.15\00:05:57.75 to an educated professional 00:05:57.79\00:05:59.29 working to help similar children 00:05:59.32\00:06:00.96 could not have happened if he had not been sponsored 00:06:00.99\00:06:04.03 and impart because of his sponsorship. 00:06:04.06\00:06:06.19 KMMS has a solution to its problems 00:06:06.23\00:06:08.66 with the building. 00:06:08.70\00:06:10.93 This building is very old, 00:06:10.97\00:06:12.90 hundred years and many places that, 00:06:12.93\00:06:15.07 you know, this rod is coming out. 00:06:15.10\00:06:18.97 And that we checked by engineer, 00:06:19.01\00:06:22.44 two experience engineer 00:06:22.48\00:06:24.48 and they said that 00:06:24.51\00:06:25.85 this building need to demolish soon, 00:06:25.88\00:06:27.88 it like six or seven scale earthquake 00:06:27.92\00:06:31.29 then it may demolish, 00:06:31.32\00:06:33.22 so there will be maybe big accident. 00:06:33.25\00:06:36.89 When we visited the building, 00:06:36.93\00:06:38.26 it was in a dangerous condition. 00:06:38.29\00:06:40.60 The structure was vulnerable to collapse 00:06:40.63\00:06:43.03 and was being used to hold a library, 00:06:43.06\00:06:44.87 computer lab and classrooms 00:06:44.90\00:06:46.57 for some of the school's youngest students. 00:06:46.60\00:06:49.40 But plans were being made for a replacement 00:06:49.44\00:06:51.57 that could not only keep students safe, 00:06:51.61\00:06:53.41 but improve the campus entirely. 00:06:53.44\00:06:57.25 So here I am at the entrance way 00:06:57.28\00:06:59.18 to KMMS School in rural Bangladesh. 00:06:59.21\00:07:02.75 The sad thing is this school has over 400 students. 00:07:02.78\00:07:06.19 And we have a large number 00:07:06.22\00:07:08.16 that's Child Impact of boarding students 00:07:08.19\00:07:11.43 who are sponsored. 00:07:11.46\00:07:12.99 This building on this side 00:07:13.03\00:07:14.53 is going to be our major project for 2020. 00:07:14.56\00:07:18.50 This building houses a preschool classrooms, 00:07:18.53\00:07:21.97 a library, and administration. 00:07:22.00\00:07:24.57 And to put it simply, it's very dangerous. 00:07:24.61\00:07:27.34 The front portion was built over 100 years ago, 00:07:27.38\00:07:31.01 the back portion over 40 years, and it's dangerous. 00:07:31.05\00:07:34.58 So we're very excited that we can help the school 00:07:34.62\00:07:37.85 by replacing this building as a safety issue. 00:07:37.89\00:07:41.32 But it will also be a big attraction 00:07:41.36\00:07:43.79 for the school to build its wall. 00:07:43.83\00:07:46.56 So here we are in the existing library 00:07:46.59\00:07:49.93 in the old building. 00:07:49.96\00:07:51.47 And this part of the building, 00:07:51.50\00:07:53.44 as we've said, is about 40 years old. 00:07:53.47\00:07:56.14 As you can see, they're getting ready 00:07:56.17\00:07:58.04 to move the library books 00:07:58.07\00:07:59.41 that are pretty keen to get out. 00:07:59.44\00:08:01.24 And then if you come over here, 00:08:01.28\00:08:03.61 you can see what's happening with the condition of the roof. 00:08:03.65\00:08:07.82 Above there is the roof. 00:08:07.85\00:08:10.12 And as you can see the water is coming through 00:08:10.15\00:08:13.22 and the damage that's occurring. 00:08:13.25\00:08:15.32 You can actually see cracks there. 00:08:15.36\00:08:17.53 And so that's just undermining the total roof structure. 00:08:17.56\00:08:22.00 The new building will have a brand new library, 00:08:22.03\00:08:25.63 a brand new science lab, classrooms, 00:08:25.67\00:08:29.07 and as I'll show you shortly a preschool 00:08:29.10\00:08:31.64 at the front of the building. 00:08:31.67\00:08:33.61 Well, I'm sitting in the old building 00:08:40.02\00:08:42.05 where the principal's office used to be, 00:08:42.08\00:08:45.09 and he's had to move out of this to another building, 00:08:45.12\00:08:48.12 because simply there was concrete 00:08:48.16\00:08:50.03 falling from the roof and it was no longer safe. 00:08:50.06\00:08:53.50 So in the new building, 00:08:53.53\00:08:55.33 there's going to be a full administration section 00:08:55.36\00:08:58.53 where the principal, the treasurer 00:08:58.57\00:09:00.60 and the office staff can be based. 00:09:00.64\00:09:04.11 And they're going to face a huge improvement 00:09:04.14\00:09:07.71 in the situation that they currently face. 00:09:07.74\00:09:10.48 The back half where the library is, 00:09:10.51\00:09:12.71 was built over 40 years ago. 00:09:12.75\00:09:15.32 And so the new building 00:09:15.35\00:09:16.69 which we're going to explain shortly, 00:09:16.72\00:09:18.72 is going to be a great resource for the school, 00:09:18.75\00:09:22.96 both in growing its number of students, 00:09:22.99\00:09:26.80 but also the key reason is safely 00:09:26.83\00:09:29.30 as we've clearly shown 00:09:29.33\00:09:30.70 and the engineer's report shows this building is not safe. 00:09:30.73\00:09:35.90 You can see the condition of the roof, okay? 00:09:35.94\00:09:39.37 And then as we come along this beam, 00:09:39.41\00:09:41.78 here's a typical portion 00:09:41.81\00:09:43.75 where the plaster is coming away. 00:09:43.78\00:09:46.18 You can see the rebar is rusted. 00:09:46.21\00:09:48.48 So through the whole building, 00:09:48.52\00:09:50.25 all the steel is like that 00:09:50.29\00:09:53.39 and then there's superficial cracks everywhere. 00:09:53.42\00:09:56.29 You don't have to be in this building 00:09:56.32\00:09:58.03 long to see that it has to be replaced. 00:09:58.06\00:10:01.26 And the good news is, 00:10:01.30\00:10:02.70 the new building is going to give them 00:10:02.73\00:10:04.67 a place of safety, 00:10:04.70\00:10:06.23 we're going to give them more capacity 00:10:06.27\00:10:08.90 for the various uses that the building will have. 00:10:08.94\00:10:12.77 So here we are in the classroom 00:10:12.81\00:10:15.18 on the top floor of the existing building, 00:10:15.21\00:10:18.11 and it doesn't take long to see the problems. 00:10:18.15\00:10:20.85 As you can see, there is a crack 00:10:20.88\00:10:22.45 which has been superficially filled, 00:10:22.48\00:10:25.42 and then the condition of the roof, 00:10:25.45\00:10:27.66 the roofing's coming away, 00:10:27.69\00:10:29.62 so they can no longer use this classroom. 00:10:29.66\00:10:32.59 And once again, I'll explain later, 00:10:32.63\00:10:35.40 but the new building is going to have 00:10:35.43\00:10:37.23 the full range of classrooms, a library and a science lab. 00:10:37.27\00:10:41.64 So here we are on the roof of the building 00:10:47.94\00:10:51.48 that's going to be demolished. 00:10:51.51\00:10:53.65 And this part of the building over here 00:10:53.68\00:10:56.42 is what it was originally a hospital 00:10:56.45\00:10:58.99 built over 100 years ago, 00:10:59.02\00:11:01.39 which the school's been using for about 40 years, 00:11:01.42\00:11:04.59 and this part where I'm standing 00:11:04.63\00:11:06.80 was built about 40 years ago. 00:11:06.83\00:11:09.16 And although it doesn't show it, 00:11:09.20\00:11:10.53 on a dry day like this, 00:11:10.57\00:11:12.37 the water is coming down is actually going through 00:11:12.40\00:11:15.57 what I'm standing on 00:11:15.60\00:11:17.14 and weakening the concrete below. 00:11:17.17\00:11:19.44 It does give us a great view of the school 00:11:19.47\00:11:21.98 and great trees and grounds that they have. 00:11:22.01\00:11:26.08 But it's going to be an exciting development 00:11:26.11\00:11:29.38 to replace this building. 00:11:29.42\00:11:31.19 The unsafe structure has already been demolished 00:11:39.49\00:11:41.96 and will be replaced 00:11:42.00\00:11:43.33 with a state of the art facility. 00:11:43.37\00:11:44.90 So the building is going to be bigger than the current one. 00:11:44.93\00:11:47.97 As I said, there'll be the preschool with the front. 00:11:48.00\00:11:50.81 We're going to fill in the canal 00:11:50.84\00:11:52.31 where will be a parking area 00:11:52.34\00:11:54.04 for people to bring their preschoolers. 00:11:54.08\00:11:56.71 The building will be the length of this one, 00:11:56.75\00:11:59.18 plus an extra 80 feet. 00:11:59.21\00:12:01.68 During our visit, those plans were made more concrete. 00:12:01.72\00:12:04.29 I want to thank the people who are helping the school. 00:12:04.32\00:12:09.32 Tonight, I can announce that, 00:12:09.36\00:12:11.39 that building is coming down 00:12:11.43\00:12:13.26 and there will be a new building. 00:12:13.29\00:12:15.03 So the new building 00:12:20.50\00:12:21.84 that we're going to build here in Bangladesh 00:12:21.87\00:12:24.44 is going to have a wide range of users. 00:12:24.47\00:12:27.74 At the front end, there's going to be a preschool 00:12:27.78\00:12:30.65 which people will pay to bring their students to. 00:12:30.68\00:12:34.02 There's going to be our income generating project. 00:12:34.05\00:12:37.92 Then the rest of the building 00:12:37.95\00:12:39.29 is going to include an administration block, 00:12:39.32\00:12:42.19 a new library, a new science room, 00:12:42.22\00:12:45.39 and a number of classrooms. 00:12:45.43\00:12:47.70 So this is going to be a big boost 00:12:47.73\00:12:49.46 to this mission school 00:12:49.50\00:12:50.97 is going to help attract new students 00:12:51.00\00:12:54.47 and will be a big boost for the students at the school. 00:12:54.50\00:12:59.34 A few weeks after our visit, the demolition started. 00:12:59.37\00:13:02.61 But there's still much work to be done, 00:13:09.18\00:13:11.35 and we need your help. 00:13:11.39\00:13:13.25 The title project is over half a million dollars, 00:13:13.29\00:13:16.22 and we just have $180,000 to still raise. 00:13:16.26\00:13:20.83 Would you please support this project just in some way, 00:13:20.86\00:13:24.07 even a small donation 00:13:24.10\00:13:25.70 would assist this real important appeal 00:13:25.73\00:13:28.77 for Child Impact in 2020. 00:13:28.80\00:13:31.77 Each year Child Impact has its rice appeal 00:13:39.05\00:13:42.18 for needy schools in countries like Bangladesh. 00:13:42.22\00:13:45.59 And I'm here now in Bangladesh, 00:13:45.62\00:13:47.89 and you can see that at KMMS School, 00:13:47.92\00:13:50.59 these girls are enjoying their rice meal. 00:13:50.63\00:13:53.50 Now they eat a little differently to us, 00:13:53.53\00:13:55.63 but at least they're enjoying a healthy lunch meal. 00:13:55.66\00:13:59.97 Not only does it ensure that they have rice, 00:14:00.00\00:14:02.90 but it is also a big benefit 00:14:02.94\00:14:04.74 to the school for their finances 00:14:04.77\00:14:07.01 because food prices have just escalated beyond control. 00:14:07.04\00:14:12.01 So thanks for supporting the rice appeal in the past 00:14:12.05\00:14:15.22 and as we face it again in 2020, 00:14:15.25\00:14:18.42 we know that you will support us. 00:14:18.45\00:14:20.49
