Child Impact International is an organization giving hope. 00:00:07.14\00:00:11.21 Previously called Asian Aid, 00:00:11.24\00:00:13.21 Child Impact International is an organization fostering 00:00:13.24\00:00:16.44 permanent positive change 00:00:16.48\00:00:18.15 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:18.18\00:00:20.18 and their communities. 00:00:20.22\00:00:21.82 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:21.85\00:00:24.35 in the lives of children and those who are in need. 00:00:24.39\00:00:27.26 Serving communities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, 00:00:27.29\00:00:31.29 Myanmar, and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:31.33\00:00:34.60 For the last 50 years, 00:00:34.63\00:00:36.10 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people 00:00:36.13\00:00:39.10 and their investment is proving infinite returns, 00:00:39.13\00:00:41.97 driven by the dedication 00:00:42.00\00:00:43.47 to helping those who have the least. 00:00:43.51\00:00:45.61 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:45.64\00:00:47.64 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:47.68\00:00:49.84 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:49.88\00:00:52.31 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.35\00:00:54.48 Their outreach expands from child rescue operations, 00:00:54.52\00:00:57.45 to providing an education for orphans, 00:00:57.49\00:00:59.89 deaf, and the blind children 00:00:59.92\00:01:01.72 giving them a sense of place, 00:01:01.76\00:01:03.86 a home, but above all, 00:01:03.89\00:01:05.56 Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:05.59\00:01:08.46 giving hope to children, 00:01:08.50\00:01:10.07 giving hope to communities, 00:01:10.10\00:01:11.93 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:11.97\00:01:14.64 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:14.67\00:01:16.20 Imagine if Florida suddenly contained 00:01:22.48\00:01:25.01 half the population of the United States. 00:01:25.05\00:01:28.28 A situation like that exists in Bangladesh, 00:01:28.32\00:01:31.32 a country roughly 00:01:31.35\00:01:32.69 the same size as the Sunshine State, 00:01:32.72\00:01:35.09 but with a population of 165 million. 00:01:35.12\00:01:38.33 Situated between India and Myanmar, 00:01:41.76\00:01:44.27 the South Asian country was formally a British colony 00:01:44.30\00:01:47.64 and later part of Pakistan, 00:01:47.67\00:01:49.94 but won its freedom in a bloody war 00:01:49.97\00:01:51.74 of independence. 00:01:51.77\00:01:53.11 In the years that followed, 00:01:56.11\00:01:57.45 Bangladesh suffered from chronic poverty, 00:01:57.48\00:01:59.75 catastrophic cyclones 00:01:59.78\00:02:01.28 and despite being largely agrarian, 00:02:01.32\00:02:04.42 food insecurity. 00:02:04.45\00:02:05.79 Bangladesh culture is centered 00:02:10.56\00:02:12.26 around the practices of the Bengal region, 00:02:12.29\00:02:14.90 which crosses several national borders, 00:02:14.93\00:02:17.27 but it is centered on Bangladesh. 00:02:17.30\00:02:21.50 Today, Bangladesh is changing. 00:02:21.54\00:02:23.77 Each year more and more people 00:02:23.81\00:02:25.47 move to urban centers to work 00:02:25.51\00:02:27.04 in new industries like textiles, 00:02:27.08\00:02:29.54 which account for 77% of the country's exports. 00:02:29.58\00:02:32.78 But there are still persistent issues 00:02:35.82\00:02:37.79 which plague the country. 00:02:37.82\00:02:40.76 A majority of women are placed into 00:02:40.79\00:02:42.56 forced marriages under the age of 18, 00:02:42.59\00:02:45.29 many under 15. 00:02:45.33\00:02:47.70 And 40% of Bangladeshi citizens 00:02:47.73\00:02:49.93 are categorized as being in a state of hunger, 00:02:49.96\00:02:53.03 with some facing starvation. 00:02:53.07\00:02:54.94 Education while improving 00:02:58.67\00:03:00.61 also presents challenges to the country, 00:03:00.64\00:03:03.14 which has one of the lowest literacy rates in Asia 00:03:03.18\00:03:06.28 and presents unequal educational opportunities 00:03:06.31\00:03:09.12 for girls. 00:03:09.15\00:03:10.49 Around 80% of the population is Muslim, 00:03:19.66\00:03:22.90 with a further 15 to 20% practicing Hinduism, 00:03:22.93\00:03:26.94 Christianity accounts for a fraction 00:03:26.97\00:03:29.14 of a percent of adherence. 00:03:29.17\00:03:31.21 And of the 165 million people in Bangladesh, 00:03:31.24\00:03:35.04 a mere 30,000 are Adventists. 00:03:35.08\00:03:39.28 That's 0.0002%. 00:03:39.31\00:03:42.62 It is in this setting that 00:03:48.69\00:03:50.03 we chronicled the successes and struggles 00:03:50.06\00:03:52.09 of Kellogg Mookerjee Memorial Seminary, 00:03:52.13\00:03:55.26 an Adventist boarding school in South Bangladesh. 00:03:55.30\00:03:59.63 The trip took eight hours passing through the river 00:03:59.67\00:04:02.57 and taking inner roads to make our way to KMMS. 00:04:02.60\00:04:06.64 The school is only 80 miles 00:04:06.68\00:04:08.14 from Dhaka, the capital, but road conditions 00:04:08.18\00:04:10.85 and the immense width of the Padma River 00:04:10.88\00:04:13.08 make the journey something for visitors to remember. 00:04:13.11\00:04:19.05 We went to Bangladesh to show how Child Impact 00:04:19.09\00:04:21.79 has been making a difference in their country, 00:04:21.82\00:04:24.16 and just why they are in need of a lot of help. 00:04:24.19\00:04:27.73 Like many countries that are leaving poverty, 00:04:27.76\00:04:29.90 Bangladesh has a rise in education 00:04:29.93\00:04:32.10 and improvements with their poverty, 00:04:32.13\00:04:34.04 which has dropped 20% in the last 20 years. 00:04:34.07\00:04:37.94 The country still has extreme poverty plaguing 00:04:37.97\00:04:40.61 more than half the population. 00:04:40.64\00:04:43.04 Education is one way to help change that. 00:04:43.08\00:04:46.68 Education is rare in Bangladesh, 00:04:46.72\00:04:48.72 and even if children go to school, 00:04:48.75\00:04:50.59 it doesn't mean they will have a chance 00:04:50.62\00:04:52.99 of getting a good education that can help them. 00:04:53.02\00:04:57.53 Jim Rennie, 00:04:57.56\00:04:58.89 the CEO of Child Impact International joined us 00:04:58.93\00:05:01.46 on that journey and discovered 00:05:01.50\00:05:02.96 the many ways Child Impact sponsorship 00:05:03.00\00:05:05.60 is changing children's lives in Bangladesh. 00:05:05.63\00:05:10.14 So, this morning, 00:05:10.17\00:05:12.44 the reality of life here in Bangladesh 00:05:12.47\00:05:15.01 and I guess what we experience really sort of hits your heart. 00:05:15.04\00:05:20.85 You suddenly are faced with the struggles in life, 00:05:20.88\00:05:24.89 you're faced with the poverty, 00:05:24.92\00:05:27.32 and I think it's things we fully don't understand. 00:05:27.36\00:05:30.83 Bangladesh families have long adapted 00:05:41.50\00:05:43.57 to a different way of living, 00:05:43.61\00:05:45.31 one where children have to quickly learn 00:05:45.34\00:05:47.21 manual labor in order to help the family survive. 00:05:47.24\00:05:50.01 Around 4 million children work from the ages of 5 to 14. 00:05:56.82\00:06:01.56 Their lives begin harsh and they usually 00:06:01.59\00:06:04.23 have no way of making time for school 00:06:04.26\00:06:07.00 due to the cost of education or simply just surviving. 00:06:07.03\00:06:11.00 This is where major help has come in. 00:06:11.03\00:06:15.94 Kellogg Mookerjee Memorial Seminary 00:06:15.97\00:06:17.91 or KMMS as it is known to locals 00:06:17.94\00:06:20.68 was founded in 1920 as Gopalgonj Boys' School, 00:06:20.71\00:06:24.98 and was the first Adventist mission in Bangladesh, 00:06:25.01\00:06:28.08 which was called East Pakistan at the time. 00:06:28.12\00:06:32.22 Nine years later, 00:06:32.25\00:06:33.59 the school became co-educational 00:06:33.62\00:06:35.26 and now cares for over 400 students. 00:06:35.29\00:06:37.59 These students come 00:06:42.66\00:06:44.00 from all districts of Bangladesh, 00:06:44.03\00:06:46.33 and in Bangladesh 00:06:46.37\00:06:47.70 we have around 64 districts, 00:06:47.74\00:06:53.41 and many students are coming from Hill Tracts. 00:06:53.44\00:06:57.05 Many are coming from north, south, east and west, 00:06:57.08\00:07:01.05 and we have more than 10 ethnic groups, 00:07:01.08\00:07:04.65 the school, and the school is open for all people. 00:07:04.69\00:07:08.22 Even we have students from all castes, Catholic, 00:07:08.26\00:07:12.19 Baptist, Oxford, Methodist, Adventist, 00:07:12.23\00:07:16.50 we have also students from many Hindu backgrounds, 00:07:16.53\00:07:20.37 and we have very few students 00:07:20.40\00:07:22.27 from Muslim background. 00:07:22.30\00:07:25.87 At KMMS students are housed, fed, given a broad education 00:07:25.91\00:07:30.45 that includes English 00:07:30.48\00:07:31.81 and protected from many of the issues 00:07:31.85\00:07:33.42 that plague children growing up in rural poverty. 00:07:33.45\00:07:37.05 And at the center of the mission KMMS 00:07:37.09\00:07:39.35 provides children access 00:07:39.39\00:07:40.72 to the Adventist message in a region 00:07:40.76\00:07:42.56 where even the concept of Christianity is little known 00:07:42.59\00:07:45.49 or understood. 00:07:45.53\00:07:47.80 We have, we do group meeting, Tuesday, 7 o'clock, 00:07:47.83\00:07:52.43 and we have also vesper meeting Friday, 6:30, 00:07:52.47\00:07:56.20 and we have a Sabbath school at 9 o'clock. 00:07:56.24\00:07:59.21 We have a divine service, 11 o'clock, 00:07:59.24\00:08:03.41 and we have AY Youth program, 5 o'clock. 00:08:03.45\00:08:09.15 The large campus contains a variety of facilities 00:08:09.18\00:08:11.85 that help the school to operate. 00:08:11.89\00:08:14.92 These facilities could be leveraged 00:08:14.96\00:08:16.73 to help the school reach greater independence 00:08:16.76\00:08:18.83 in the future. 00:08:18.86\00:08:20.93 Income generating project like our fish farm. 00:08:20.96\00:08:24.30 We have patty field. 00:08:24.33\00:08:26.63 We have the garden. 00:08:26.67\00:08:28.44 So even all the students, 00:08:28.47\00:08:31.64 even teachers, they do not take weekend. 00:08:31.67\00:08:35.48 So teachers, they work with the students. 00:08:35.51\00:08:37.95 So that support comes from garden farm, 00:08:37.98\00:08:40.92 and that actually really helped to run our school. 00:08:40.95\00:08:44.09 But for now, many students at KMMS face a great need. 00:08:47.09\00:08:51.03 Out of the 400 children enrolled, 00:08:51.06\00:08:53.16 more than half rely on sponsorship to attend, 00:08:53.19\00:08:56.10 and 200 are either orphans or lacking a parent. 00:08:56.13\00:09:00.37 This is the reality in Bangladesh. 00:09:00.40\00:09:02.94 The country is full of people looking for work, 00:09:02.97\00:09:05.47 but not enough is found, 00:09:05.51\00:09:06.84 and the need to improve 00:09:06.88\00:09:08.21 an education doesn't make it easy. 00:09:08.24\00:09:10.28 Parents have to make hard decisions 00:09:10.31\00:09:12.21 that most in well-off countries could not understand. 00:09:12.25\00:09:16.08 The reality of how to let your child 00:09:16.12\00:09:17.49 have a future. 00:09:17.52\00:09:19.15 Many people are begging and asking for help 00:09:19.19\00:09:21.62 to give their children a future. 00:09:21.66\00:09:23.46 And sometimes having to make them work 00:09:23.49\00:09:25.29 is the only alternative. 00:09:25.33\00:09:27.43 The fact that KMMS exists 00:09:27.46\00:09:29.26 and give children a chance 00:09:29.30\00:09:30.63 to not only have a childhood, 00:09:30.67\00:09:32.40 but also be sponsored to have a good future 00:09:32.43\00:09:34.47 is huge in a country like Bangladesh. 00:09:34.50\00:09:36.60 One of the great aspects of my job is getting 00:09:42.31\00:09:44.55 to the field to see what Child Impact does. 00:09:44.58\00:09:47.55 And as you go through the day, 00:09:47.58\00:09:49.18 just occasionally something happens 00:09:49.22\00:09:51.59 that has a big impact on you. 00:09:51.62\00:09:53.69 And just yesterday, it happened. 00:09:53.72\00:09:56.46 I was standing here at the gate, 00:09:56.49\00:09:57.99 near the gate of the school and a lady came in. 00:09:58.03\00:10:01.33 You can see she was distressed. 00:10:01.36\00:10:03.37 She was crying. 00:10:03.40\00:10:04.83 She wanted to speak to one of the teachers. 00:10:04.87\00:10:07.34 And when she did, 00:10:07.37\00:10:08.70 tears were rolling down her face. 00:10:08.74\00:10:11.24 I could see that something was wrong. 00:10:11.27\00:10:13.94 And she's a solo mom. 00:10:13.98\00:10:15.68 Her husband has left her, 00:10:15.71\00:10:17.48 run off with another woman to India, 00:10:17.51\00:10:19.58 and she is struggling to bring up two girls. 00:10:19.61\00:10:22.58 And to be honest, she has to get out 00:10:22.62\00:10:24.85 and earn some money, 00:10:24.89\00:10:26.22 because she can't feed them and look after them. 00:10:26.25\00:10:28.72 She's also worried that 00:10:28.76\00:10:30.09 they're going to be trafficked or taken away from her. 00:10:30.13\00:10:33.60 So she wanted them enrolled in the school. 00:10:33.63\00:10:36.46 She wanted them sponsored, 00:10:36.50\00:10:38.30 and I could see that it wasn't just an education, 00:10:38.33\00:10:41.77 it was giving her hope. 00:10:41.80\00:10:43.64 It was giving her hope 00:10:43.67\00:10:45.37 that her children could be fed and have an education. 00:10:45.41\00:10:49.28 Sponsorship's making a big difference. 00:10:49.31\00:10:51.61 And if you could sponsor a child, 00:10:51.65\00:10:53.58 or you could help 00:10:53.62\00:10:54.95 with the unsponsored child fund, 00:10:54.98\00:10:56.82 it will make a difference. 00:10:56.85\00:10:58.29 In Bangladesh, 00:11:11.07\00:11:12.40 KMMS is a focus school for Child Impact, 00:11:12.43\00:11:14.80 which sponsors hundreds of children in the country 00:11:14.84\00:11:17.17 and allows them to continue receiving a quality education, 00:11:17.21\00:11:20.61 food security 00:11:20.64\00:11:21.98 and an opportunity to know Jesus. 00:11:22.01\00:11:23.98 On this filming trip to Bangladesh, 00:11:24.01\00:11:27.35 we've got two new perspectives. 00:11:27.38\00:11:29.35 One, the perspective of poverty 00:11:29.38\00:11:32.05 and the other perspective 00:11:32.09\00:11:33.42 of the impact of our sponsorship program. 00:11:33.46\00:11:36.42 In rural Bangladesh, 00:11:36.46\00:11:38.03 35% of the population live below the poverty line. 00:11:38.06\00:11:43.26 And amongst woman, it's even higher. 00:11:43.30\00:11:46.30 There are statistics like 00:11:46.33\00:11:47.67 the people only earn $1.98 a day 00:11:47.70\00:11:51.07 and the absolute poor are 32% of the population, 00:11:51.11\00:11:55.61 and the extreme poor are 19%, 00:11:55.64\00:11:59.28 and both those categories are above poor. 00:11:59.31\00:12:03.05 We've heard from the children the stories 00:12:03.08\00:12:05.69 of struggle of their parents, of their solo moms. 00:12:05.72\00:12:09.62 And we've heard 00:12:09.66\00:12:11.03 how they've been struggling to feed them. 00:12:11.06\00:12:13.70 And so we see that sponsorship is much greater than education. 00:12:13.73\00:12:18.37 Sponsorship is supporting the family. 00:12:18.40\00:12:21.00 It's giving the parents hope, 00:12:21.04\00:12:22.70 and there's a huge benefit to the community. 00:12:22.74\00:12:26.57 Sponsorship is effective, 00:12:26.61\00:12:28.78 and sponsorship is making a difference 00:12:28.81\00:12:30.85 on a wider scale here 00:12:30.88\00:12:32.68 in our program in Bangladesh. 00:12:32.71\00:12:37.09 Child Impact International sponsors over 3,500 children 00:12:37.12\00:12:40.89 living in poverty at 100 different schools. 00:12:40.92\00:12:43.69 At KMMS alone, 00:12:46.76\00:12:48.10 Child Impact sponsors 75 students. 00:12:48.13\00:12:50.00 Though they may live thousands of miles away, 00:12:53.80\00:12:56.04 going through a life 00:12:56.07\00:12:57.41 wholly unfamiliar to a foreigner, 00:12:57.44\00:12:59.04 every child here at KMMS has a story. 00:12:59.07\00:13:01.74 What is life like for a child in rural Bangladesh? 00:13:07.25\00:13:10.39 What have they gained from an Adventist education? 00:13:10.42\00:13:13.25 And how has Child Impact sponsorship affected them? 00:13:13.29\00:13:16.49 Join Jim Rennie 00:13:16.52\00:13:17.86 as he explores these things 00:13:17.89\00:13:19.23 at KMMS and several other schools in Bangladesh 00:13:19.26\00:13:22.63 to see how a glimmer of hope is possible, 00:13:22.66\00:13:25.23 and how you can have a direct impact in this world 00:13:25.27\00:13:28.14 that God has given us. 00:13:28.17\00:13:29.50 Each year Child Impact has its rice appeal 00:13:33.31\00:13:36.61 for needy schools and countries like Bangladesh. 00:13:36.64\00:13:39.98 And I'm here now in Bangladesh. 00:13:40.02\00:13:42.22 And you can see that at KMMS School, 00:13:42.25\00:13:44.95 these girls are enjoying their rice meal. 00:13:44.99\00:13:47.86 Now they eat a little differently to us, 00:13:47.89\00:13:50.03 but at least they're enjoying a healthy lunch meal. 00:13:50.06\00:13:54.36 Not only does it ensure that they have rice, 00:13:54.40\00:13:57.23 but it is also a big benefit 00:13:57.27\00:13:59.10 to the school for their finances 00:13:59.13\00:14:01.30 because food prices have just escalated beyond control. 00:14:01.34\00:14:06.41 So thanks for supporting the rice appeal in the past 00:14:06.44\00:14:09.61 and as we face it again in 2020, 00:14:09.64\00:14:12.71 we know that you will support us. 00:14:12.75\00:14:14.58
