I am Jim Rennie, CEO of Asian Aid USA. 00:00:12.67\00:00:17.01 As you have heard by now, 00:00:17.05\00:00:18.51 the country of Nepal has been hit by a massive earthquake. 00:00:18.55\00:00:23.32 Thousands are dead and tens of thousands are injured. 00:00:23.35\00:00:27.82 Scheer Adventist Memorial Hospital 00:00:27.86\00:00:30.56 is the only church institution in Nepal 00:00:30.59\00:00:33.73 and it's very important to the outreach of the church, 00:00:33.76\00:00:37.13 but also the massive community that it serves. 00:00:37.17\00:00:40.74 Right now Scheer Adventist Memorial Hospital 00:00:40.77\00:00:44.14 is overwhelmed with the injured that are coming through 00:00:44.17\00:00:47.54 its hospital gates every hour. 00:00:47.58\00:00:50.75 Scheer Hospital have asked Asian Aid 00:00:50.78\00:00:53.35 to establish an emergency fund to help the hospital 00:00:53.38\00:00:57.62 cope with this massive emergency. 00:00:57.65\00:01:01.16 The program we're showing this evening is the one 00:01:01.19\00:01:04.19 from our Hope In Motion series that shows the work 00:01:04.23\00:01:07.56 that Scheer has done. 00:01:07.60\00:01:09.26 And during this program we will share with you 00:01:09.30\00:01:12.23 some information about the appeal 00:01:12.27\00:01:15.20 and how you can help this emergency situation. 00:01:15.24\00:01:19.01 Asian Aid is an organization giving hope, 00:01:31.92\00:01:34.86 an organization fostering permanent positive change 00:01:34.89\00:01:38.06 in the lives of disadvantaged children and their communities. 00:01:38.09\00:01:41.93 An organization that is committed 00:01:41.96\00:01:43.77 to making a difference in the lives of children 00:01:43.80\00:01:46.20 and those who were in need. 00:01:46.23\00:01:47.84 Serving communities in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, 00:01:47.87\00:01:51.94 Myanmar and India. 00:01:51.97\00:01:53.91 For the last 40 years, Asian Aid has invested 00:02:01.62\00:02:04.82 in the futures of people 00:02:04.85\00:02:06.29 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:02:06.32\00:02:10.59 Driven by their dedication 00:02:10.63\00:02:12.13 to helping those who have the least. 00:02:12.16\00:02:14.70 Asian Aid is an organization 00:02:14.73\00:02:16.36 focused on the welfare of children, 00:02:16.40\00:02:18.93 implementing diverse development projects 00:02:18.97\00:02:21.50 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:02:21.54\00:02:24.44 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations, 00:02:24.47\00:02:27.64 to providing an education for orphans, 00:02:27.68\00:02:30.21 deaf and the blind children. 00:02:30.25\00:02:32.75 Giving them a sense of place, a home but above all, 00:02:32.78\00:02:36.92 Asian Aid is an organization giving hope, 00:02:36.95\00:02:40.12 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:02:40.16\00:02:43.76 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:02:43.79\00:02:47.53 This is Hope In Motion. 00:02:47.56\00:02:49.90 Nepal is renowned 00:03:11.02\00:03:12.35 for its natural beauty and enduring culture. 00:03:12.39\00:03:15.19 Having existed as early as its neighbors 00:03:15.22\00:03:17.56 India and China, 00:03:17.59\00:03:19.03 Nepal has kept its cultural heritage intact, 00:03:19.06\00:03:21.83 offering an extraordinary 00:03:21.86\00:03:23.37 travel experience for a visitor. 00:03:23.40\00:03:25.30 With eight of the ten highest mountain peaks in the world, 00:03:28.84\00:03:31.87 including Mount Everest, 00:03:31.91\00:03:33.54 Nepal's landscape is truly inspiring. 00:03:33.58\00:03:36.51 Nepal is also 00:03:36.54\00:03:37.88 one of the poorest countries in the world 00:03:37.91\00:03:39.45 where one-third of the population live 00:03:39.48\00:03:41.48 below the poverty line, earning less than $2 a day. 00:03:41.52\00:03:46.42 For most of our work is in India, 00:03:46.45\00:03:49.96 but when we come to Nepal, 00:03:49.99\00:03:52.49 we see a different level of poverty. 00:03:52.53\00:03:55.26 The economy is certainly worse here, 00:03:55.30\00:03:57.17 the level of poverty, the level of pollution, 00:03:57.20\00:04:00.44 there's a huge need 00:04:00.47\00:04:01.80 and we want to do more in Nepal. 00:04:01.84\00:04:04.17 With the majority of Nepalese depending on their daily wages, 00:04:04.21\00:04:07.78 obtaining healthcare is one of the main challenges 00:04:07.81\00:04:10.15 people face in this developing country. 00:04:10.18\00:04:12.51 This is where Scheer Memorial Hospital plays 00:04:12.55\00:04:14.58 a crucial role in serving 00:04:14.62\00:04:16.25 the medical needs of the people of Nepal. 00:04:16.28\00:04:18.32 Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:04:22.46\00:04:23.83 was established over 55 years ago 00:04:23.86\00:04:26.56 by Adventist missionaries serving in Nepal. 00:04:26.59\00:04:29.43 Situated just outside Kathmandu, 00:04:29.46\00:04:31.77 the hospital is an important institution for the community 00:04:31.80\00:04:34.94 and the Adventist church in Nepal. 00:04:34.97\00:04:37.54 Well, at the beginning the hospital, 00:04:37.57\00:04:41.78 after the establishment of hospital 00:04:41.81\00:04:43.18 is when their church started to expand. 00:04:43.21\00:04:45.85 So Scheer Memorial Hospital is basically the best 00:04:45.88\00:04:49.55 of the Adventist community in Nepal. 00:04:49.58\00:04:52.79 Right now, the church has been growing. 00:04:52.82\00:04:55.86 Now we have over around 4,000 members, 00:04:55.89\00:04:59.89 but the main organization 00:04:59.93\00:05:02.10 of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:05:02.13\00:05:03.47 in Nepal is our hospital. 00:05:03.50\00:05:07.04 Although the cost of the doctor's consultation 00:05:07.07\00:05:09.07 is only 33 cents, some cannot even afford that. 00:05:09.10\00:05:13.94 People come from miles around from rural villages 00:05:13.98\00:05:16.95 to hilltop settlements, seeking medical help. 00:05:16.98\00:05:20.02 The hospital also provides 00:05:20.05\00:05:21.55 ambulance services to emergency cases, 00:05:21.58\00:05:24.02 often traversing 00:05:24.05\00:05:25.39 through inaccessible and dangerous roads. 00:05:25.42\00:05:27.39 Asian Aid's focus has always been about children, 00:05:42.00\00:05:44.97 providing children 00:05:45.01\00:05:46.34 who are in need with an education 00:05:46.37\00:05:47.74 and giving them an opportunity for a better future 00:05:47.78\00:05:50.41 through its sponsorship program. 00:05:50.45\00:05:52.58 Along with the need to get healthcare 00:05:52.61\00:05:54.38 and access to medical centers, 00:05:54.42\00:05:56.15 the opportunity to get good education 00:05:56.18\00:05:58.39 is highly important to the people of Nepal. 00:05:58.42\00:06:01.46 The main thing is education, 00:06:01.49\00:06:03.86 and because in this part of the world 00:06:03.89\00:06:05.46 if you got no education you, your life is really, 00:06:05.49\00:06:11.53 you know, you can't, you can't earn hardly anything, 00:06:11.57\00:06:14.94 all you can do is labor 00:06:14.97\00:06:17.04 and in many places 00:06:17.07\00:06:18.41 what the laborers are paid is almost nothing. 00:06:18.44\00:06:21.31 So I think education just mean make so much difference 00:06:21.34\00:06:25.55 in this part of the world, 00:06:25.58\00:06:26.92 more than a dozen in western countries. 00:06:26.95\00:06:30.59 But in a world where earning $2 a day is a struggle 00:06:30.62\00:06:33.49 for the majority of the people, 00:06:33.52\00:06:35.26 sending their children to school 00:06:35.29\00:06:36.62 is a strain on their finances and it remains a distant dream. 00:06:36.66\00:06:40.80 Without sponsorship, it would be very difficult 00:06:40.83\00:06:43.26 for their children to receive an education. 00:06:43.30\00:06:46.20 I'm here at the school where Asian Aid USA 00:06:46.23\00:06:49.30 is sponsoring a number of children 00:06:49.34\00:06:51.34 next to Scheer Memorial Hospital in Kathmandu in Nepal. 00:06:51.37\00:06:55.98 We have about 40 children at the school 00:06:56.01\00:06:59.68 and we want to increase the numbers. 00:06:59.71\00:07:02.15 This school is very important, Asian Aid USA, 00:07:02.18\00:07:05.32 as we don't have many schools in Nepal 00:07:05.35\00:07:08.02 where we're involved in, 00:07:08.06\00:07:09.56 and we have chosen the school 00:07:09.59\00:07:11.73 because of its gross relationship 00:07:11.76\00:07:13.80 to the Scheer Memorial Hospital, 00:07:13.83\00:07:16.03 but also the need in the area. 00:07:16.06\00:07:17.87 Children from the local community 00:07:22.30\00:07:23.94 and some of the hospital staff's children 00:07:23.97\00:07:25.74 attend the school. 00:07:25.77\00:07:27.18 Although the church is trying 00:07:27.21\00:07:28.54 to develop more schools in Nepal, 00:07:28.58\00:07:30.45 without sponsorship it would be difficult 00:07:30.48\00:07:32.51 to attract students from the community. 00:07:32.55\00:07:34.22 Suman Pranja is a fourth grade student at the school. 00:08:12.85\00:08:16.12 Orphaned at a very young age, Suman grew up begging 00:08:16.16\00:08:18.83 in the streets in the town 00:08:18.86\00:08:20.60 close by Scheer Memorial Hospital. 00:08:20.63\00:08:22.73 A local church pastor found him 00:08:22.76\00:08:24.27 and brought him to a small orphanage 00:08:24.30\00:08:25.83 he was running for abandoned children. 00:08:25.87\00:08:27.90 His church members supported his work 00:08:27.94\00:08:29.60 and provided funding 00:08:29.64\00:08:30.97 for their food and accommodation. 00:08:31.01\00:08:32.67 But he found it difficult to pay their tuition fees. 00:08:32.71\00:08:35.34 Fortunately for Suman, 00:08:35.38\00:08:36.95 pastor knew people at Scheer Memorial 00:08:36.98\00:08:38.88 and Suman was enrolled at the school. 00:08:38.91\00:08:40.92 He is now sponsored by Asian Aid USA. 00:08:40.95\00:08:46.32 I'm very happy that Suman could go to the school 00:08:46.35\00:08:49.66 and he is getting sponsorship and this school at the hospital 00:08:49.69\00:08:53.60 is a Christian school. 00:08:53.63\00:08:55.13 And he could continue to learn about Jesus there. 00:08:55.16\00:08:57.50 My name is Goma Paudyal, I teach in play group. 00:09:25.83\00:09:30.23 These kids are lovely and I enjoy teaching them. 00:09:30.27\00:09:33.64 This is the best job I enjoy the most 00:09:33.67\00:09:35.84 and I don't even notice when the time pass, 00:09:35.87\00:09:38.47 when I'm playing with them and teaching them. 00:09:38.51\00:09:40.81 This is what I enjoy the most here. 00:09:40.84\00:09:43.01 The school provides employment to teachers 00:09:45.85\00:09:47.95 who are from the local community. 00:09:47.98\00:09:49.45 Like Goma Paudyal, 00:09:49.48\00:09:51.05 who otherwise would have to travel long distances 00:09:51.09\00:09:53.46 or go to Kathmandu to find a good teaching job. 00:09:53.49\00:09:57.89 The school also provides one nourishing meal a day 00:09:57.93\00:10:00.70 for all children as part of its incentive program 00:10:00.73\00:10:03.57 to encourage parents to send their children to school. 00:10:03.60\00:10:06.37 Education is highly valued in Nepal 00:10:09.94\00:10:12.44 as it is in rest of South Asia. 00:10:12.47\00:10:14.84 Parents perceive a good education 00:10:14.88\00:10:16.41 as a catalyst for change. 00:10:16.44\00:10:18.38 This perception is not 00:10:18.41\00:10:19.75 just for a better future for their children, 00:10:19.78\00:10:21.75 but they also believe 00:10:21.78\00:10:23.12 it will bring changes to their own fortunes. 00:10:23.15\00:10:26.05 In these cultures usually the educated children 00:10:26.09\00:10:29.32 will care for the parents also when they get old. 00:10:29.36\00:10:32.09 Because if a parent gets to the place 00:10:32.13\00:10:34.53 where they're too sick and too old 00:10:34.56\00:10:37.07 to work in the field, 00:10:37.10\00:10:38.43 so whatever laboring work they've been doing. 00:10:38.47\00:10:40.84 Well, what you do? 00:10:40.87\00:10:42.60 You basically beg and starve or you know, 00:10:42.64\00:10:45.94 depending where you live, maybe some beggars are, 00:10:45.97\00:10:48.94 you know, can make a little bit, 00:10:48.98\00:10:50.51 but in remote areas especially if they are in a village 00:10:50.55\00:10:54.08 where everybody is poor. 00:10:54.12\00:10:55.72 You know, they're lucky to, to get anything. 00:10:55.75\00:10:57.99 So I think a lot of parents also think about that, 00:10:58.02\00:11:01.32 that you know, 00:11:01.36\00:11:02.69 if my child gets a good education, 00:11:02.72\00:11:04.19 it will also be a blessing to me in my old age. 00:11:04.23\00:11:07.10 But she quickly read. 00:11:07.13\00:11:08.96 Read quickly. 00:11:09.00\00:11:10.33 Quickly describes, how you read. 00:11:10.37\00:11:12.90 My name is Andrew Rapp, 00:11:12.93\00:11:14.27 I'm from Walla Walla University. 00:11:14.30\00:11:16.04 I'm studying business, 00:11:16.07\00:11:18.14 marketing in international business, 00:11:18.17\00:11:19.84 but I took a gap year to come to Nepal 00:11:19.87\00:11:22.58 and work as a volunteer school teacher 00:11:22.61\00:11:24.85 and youth mentor. 00:11:24.88\00:11:26.82 Colorado native Andrew 00:11:26.85\00:11:28.38 is a volunteer teacher at the school. 00:11:28.42\00:11:30.62 Because of its close association with the hospital, 00:11:30.65\00:11:33.36 the school has been privileged to bring in overseas teachers, 00:11:33.39\00:11:36.42 who come here bringing a new approach to teaching. 00:11:36.46\00:11:39.06 This not only exposes the students 00:11:39.09\00:11:40.86 to an international array of teachers, 00:11:40.90\00:11:43.23 but also helps the missionary teachers 00:11:43.26\00:11:45.33 get a different outlook in life. 00:11:45.37\00:11:47.77 I think for me it was really important 00:11:47.80\00:11:50.37 just to be able to take a break, 00:11:50.41\00:11:53.34 take a step back from my life in school 00:11:53.38\00:11:55.74 and being so focused on what I wanted to do 00:11:55.78\00:11:58.51 and take a step back and see what other people need, 00:11:58.55\00:12:02.58 that there is more, 00:12:02.62\00:12:03.95 more important things than just my concerns. 00:12:03.99\00:12:06.22 There is, there is people 00:12:06.25\00:12:07.99 that have more immediate needs than, 00:12:08.02\00:12:10.33 than the fickle things 00:12:10.36\00:12:11.69 that I think might be so important back home. 00:12:11.73\00:12:15.13 No doubt, a good Christian education 00:12:15.16\00:12:17.57 and schools providing that opportunity 00:12:17.60\00:12:19.57 is a beacon of hope for the children here. 00:12:19.60\00:12:22.10 And Asian Aid's sponsorship program is helping them 00:12:22.14\00:12:24.87 see that ray of hope in this impoverished 00:12:24.91\00:12:27.28 yet idyllic region. 00:12:27.31\00:12:29.44 But all is not what it seems. 00:12:29.48\00:12:31.65 Underneath its beauty in the fields and hilltops, 00:12:31.68\00:12:34.42 villages and towns, women are living in pain. 00:12:34.45\00:12:37.65 When we come back, we look at how 00:12:37.69\00:12:39.45 over a half a million women are suffering 00:12:39.49\00:12:41.56 from Uterine prolapse and discover 00:12:41.59\00:12:43.53 how Asian Aid is helping ease their pain. 00:12:43.56\00:12:45.89 As you can see from this program 00:12:50.23\00:12:52.10 Scheer Memorial Hospital does some amazing work 00:12:52.13\00:12:55.54 in its partnership with Asian Aid. 00:12:55.57\00:12:58.14 But right now Scheer Memorial Hospital is overwhelmed 00:12:58.17\00:13:02.61 with injured people from this massive earthquake. 00:13:02.64\00:13:06.45 Every hour more people are coming through the gate 00:13:06.48\00:13:09.42 and patients are even been treated outside. 00:13:09.45\00:13:13.02 The damage is huge 00:13:13.05\00:13:14.79 and people are still coming in the gate. 00:13:14.82\00:13:17.59 This appeal will help Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:13:17.63\00:13:21.76 in treating these people and helping the community. 00:13:21.80\00:13:25.60 We ask for your help. 00:13:25.63\00:13:27.64 Please contact Asian Aid to help this urgent appeal. 00:13:27.67\00:13:31.41 Well, I am here in Sunrise Home with Sheela. 00:13:35.24\00:13:38.01 Now my family and I have been sponsoring Sheela 00:13:38.05\00:13:40.48 for just about a year now 00:13:40.52\00:13:41.98 and I can tell you being here and spending time with her, 00:13:42.02\00:13:45.02 I can see the difference 00:13:45.05\00:13:46.39 that sponsorship is making in her life. 00:13:46.42\00:13:48.66 She now has plenty of food, 00:13:48.69\00:13:50.43 she has a beautiful place to sleep each night, 00:13:50.46\00:13:52.63 she has clothes, she has a school uniform 00:13:52.66\00:13:55.36 and an excellent education. 00:13:55.40\00:13:57.33 I can tell you 00:13:57.37\00:13:58.70 it's made a difference in her life 00:13:58.73\00:14:00.24 and it's made a difference in our lives too. 00:14:00.27\00:14:02.80 Now through sponsorship you too can make a difference 00:14:02.84\00:14:05.94 in the life of a child everyday. 00:14:05.97\00:14:08.04 Nepal, sandwiched between Asian giants China and India 00:14:31.63\00:14:36.20 is a landlocked sovereign state in the Himalayas. 00:14:36.24\00:14:39.04 The mountain range in the north is home 00:14:39.07\00:14:41.11 to eight of the world's tallest mountain peaks 00:14:41.14\00:14:43.58 including the highest point on earth, 00:14:43.61\00:14:45.61 Mount Everest, 00:14:45.65\00:14:46.98 thus making it popular for mountaineering. 00:14:47.02\00:14:49.28 Hinduism is practiced by over 80% of the population, 00:14:49.32\00:14:52.95 making it the country 00:14:52.99\00:14:54.32 with the highest percentage of Hindus. 00:14:54.36\00:14:56.12 With the birth place of Buddha located in this region, 00:14:56.16\00:14:59.06 Nepal is also historically linked with Buddhism, 00:14:59.09\00:15:02.16 making it culturally very rich. 00:15:02.20\00:15:04.73 However, Nepal is also economically challenged 00:15:04.77\00:15:07.77 and is home 00:15:07.80\00:15:09.14 to some of the poorest people on the planet 00:15:09.17\00:15:10.97 and this economically backward environment 00:15:11.01\00:15:13.38 and harsh terrain 00:15:13.41\00:15:14.74 where infrastructure and transport is unavailable, 00:15:14.78\00:15:17.58 women become the beast of burden. 00:15:17.61\00:15:19.25 Economic difficulties and cultural perceptions 00:15:28.52\00:15:31.16 have made women of Nepal suffer silently, 00:15:31.19\00:15:34.30 the condition is called Uterine prolapse. 00:15:34.33\00:15:38.73 Yes, this is something very interesting 00:15:38.77\00:15:40.30 because this condition of Uterine prolapse 00:15:40.34\00:15:42.57 is not so common in most of the countries. 00:15:42.60\00:15:45.37 But interestingly in Nepal it is very common 00:15:45.41\00:15:49.91 to see Uterine prolapse in women. 00:15:49.94\00:15:52.21 And the reason, we don't know exactly the reason, 00:15:52.25\00:15:54.65 but over here the ladies have to carry a lot weight, 00:15:54.68\00:15:59.45 so weight carrying also provide the incidents 00:15:59.49\00:16:03.93 of prolapse more high, 00:16:03.96\00:16:06.59 also having more children 00:16:06.63\00:16:08.46 also provide more incidents of having this problem, 00:16:08.50\00:16:12.60 so it is multifactorial. 00:16:12.63\00:16:14.40 We cannot say, 00:16:14.44\00:16:15.77 we cannot point to one only one, 00:16:15.80\00:16:17.61 one thing but, well, we know in Nepal 00:16:17.64\00:16:21.51 it is very common to have this problem. 00:16:21.54\00:16:26.55 Uterine prolapse is a condition in a woman 00:16:26.58\00:16:28.98 where her uterus just falls off her body. 00:16:29.02\00:16:32.05 We learned that one of the main reasons women get prolapse 00:16:32.09\00:16:34.99 is because they are forced to carry heavy loads. 00:16:35.02\00:16:37.69 Sometimes around 50 kilos strapped around their forehead, 00:16:37.73\00:16:41.33 pressing down on their neck. 00:16:41.36\00:16:43.53 Often they have to continue with this heavy labor 00:16:43.57\00:16:46.03 right after child birth. 00:16:46.07\00:16:47.57 The stress and pressure this puts on their lower back 00:16:47.60\00:16:50.04 is so dangerous 00:16:50.07\00:16:51.51 and their delicate body cannot support their uterus. 00:16:51.54\00:16:54.08 We cannot go to detail of what is the condition, 00:17:02.15\00:17:05.32 but having this condition affect the women in a, 00:17:05.35\00:17:08.52 in a extreme way, to the extreme 00:17:08.56\00:17:12.19 that sometime their husbands leave them 00:17:12.23\00:17:15.63 because of their marital problems 00:17:15.66\00:17:18.17 that they may have. 00:17:18.20\00:17:19.53 So yes, it is 00:17:19.57\00:17:20.90 a very incapacitating condition for the women 00:17:20.94\00:17:24.14 and that effects not only the women, 00:17:24.17\00:17:26.17 but also the entire family. 00:17:26.21\00:17:29.11 In this patriarchal society, women suffering from prolapse 00:17:29.14\00:17:32.68 are ashamed of their condition 00:17:32.71\00:17:34.18 and they don't want to come forward 00:17:34.22\00:17:35.82 and suffer in silence for decades. 00:17:35.85\00:17:38.49 The psychological impact 00:17:38.52\00:17:40.09 this has on their well-being 00:17:40.12\00:17:41.56 affects their already battered physical condition. 00:17:41.59\00:17:44.43 Thousands go undetected and when they are discovered, 00:17:44.46\00:17:47.90 they become outcast, excluded and deserted 00:17:47.93\00:17:50.77 by their husbands and families. 00:17:50.80\00:17:52.43 Today women suffering from Uterine prolapse have hope. 00:18:04.81\00:18:08.62 Over the last 10 years Asian Aid has funded a program 00:18:08.65\00:18:12.25 along with Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:18:12.29\00:18:14.29 to identify these women 00:18:14.32\00:18:15.69 wherever they are and to facilitate surgeries 00:18:15.72\00:18:18.23 and provide much needed preventative health education. 00:18:18.26\00:18:21.63 Well, we are partnering with Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:18:21.66\00:18:24.40 because we truly believe they are doing a wonderful job 00:18:24.43\00:18:27.80 in their community. 00:18:27.84\00:18:29.30 It's the only Adventist hospital in Nepal. 00:18:29.34\00:18:32.84 It's a critical part of the church in Nepal, 00:18:32.87\00:18:36.34 and they now have the facilities 00:18:36.38\00:18:40.35 to do the prolapse operations. 00:18:40.38\00:18:43.55 And so our funding program is very valuable to them, 00:18:43.59\00:18:48.49 because they have plenty of capacity. 00:18:48.52\00:18:50.89 And so for us it's very rewarding 00:18:50.93\00:18:54.90 not only to make the lives-- 00:18:54.93\00:18:58.30 the change of lives for the women, 00:18:58.33\00:19:00.37 but also we are able to help the institution in gaining work 00:19:00.40\00:19:04.84 and doing work in the community. 00:19:04.87\00:19:07.84 Here at the hospital, 00:19:07.88\00:19:09.94 we have done a lot of prolapse operations. 00:19:09.98\00:19:12.88 I think I forget how many years we've been doing it now 00:19:12.91\00:19:15.68 maybe 10 or 11 years, 00:19:15.72\00:19:17.22 but during that time 00:19:17.25\00:19:18.59 we have now operated on between 8,000 and 9,000 ladies. 00:19:18.62\00:19:22.16 And to see the difference it makes, 00:19:22.19\00:19:24.56 you know, it's some-- 00:19:24.59\00:19:26.80 I just can't imagine have these women like this-- 00:19:26.83\00:19:30.50 I remember one lady, she told us that 00:19:30.53\00:19:32.87 she had been walking around with this prolapse 00:19:32.90\00:19:35.40 hanging out of her body for 50 years. 00:19:35.44\00:19:39.54 Well, as a hospital we can say 00:19:39.57\00:19:41.71 that we are very grateful for Asian Aid, 00:19:41.74\00:19:44.51 because they have been providing surgeries or support 00:19:44.55\00:19:47.42 for surgeries for the last two years. 00:19:47.45\00:19:49.92 And we are grateful in behalf of all the families 00:19:49.95\00:19:52.72 and the patient that we have been treating, 00:19:52.75\00:19:54.76 send thanks to the help of Asian Aid. 00:19:54.79\00:19:56.99 All throughout its history, Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:20:08.54\00:20:11.17 has been privileged 00:20:11.21\00:20:12.54 to host a number of medical professionals from abroad 00:20:12.57\00:20:15.21 who volunteer their time and expertise, 00:20:15.24\00:20:17.58 conducting camps. 00:20:17.61\00:20:19.01 This has benefited thousands of people 00:20:19.05\00:20:20.75 from the local community, especially women. 00:20:20.78\00:20:24.19 This week a group from Sydney Adventist Hospital 00:20:24.22\00:20:27.16 from Sydney, Australia, 00:20:27.19\00:20:28.52 is here conducting prolapse operations. 00:20:28.56\00:20:31.43 Just to see these women have it fixed, 00:20:31.46\00:20:33.83 not have that prolapse anymore, they're so happy, 00:20:33.86\00:20:37.10 they hug us, they kiss us, they want to shake our hand, 00:20:37.13\00:20:40.50 they want to touch us and it is just-- it's humbling, 00:20:40.54\00:20:44.94 very humbling because we are so grateful, you know, 00:20:44.97\00:20:48.51 in our society that you just don't realize 00:20:48.54\00:20:52.75 how hard it is for them here to be working 00:20:52.78\00:20:55.62 under the circumstances they've got to work under. 00:20:55.65\00:20:59.59 Karen is part of a volunteer group 00:20:59.62\00:21:01.29 Open Heart International from Sydney. 00:21:01.32\00:21:03.86 These are medical professionals 00:21:03.89\00:21:05.56 that go to various developing countries 00:21:05.59\00:21:07.36 each year conducting medical camps. 00:21:07.40\00:21:09.83 For Karen and her team, 00:21:09.86\00:21:11.27 camps such as these may seem just another day's work. 00:21:11.30\00:21:14.14 But it has a profound impact on these women 00:21:14.17\00:21:16.67 who suffered from prolapse 00:21:16.71\00:21:18.27 and for the volunteers it's an opportunity 00:21:18.31\00:21:20.84 to make a difference in their own humble ways. 00:21:20.88\00:21:23.85 Volunteering to me, it's emotional. 00:21:23.88\00:21:28.08 You will get very drawn into what they don't have 00:21:28.12\00:21:31.29 and what we can do to them. 00:21:31.32\00:21:32.99 We might think we're just doing 00:21:33.02\00:21:34.46 what we do every day back at home, 00:21:34.49\00:21:36.96 but for them it's life changing and even though it might seem 00:21:36.99\00:21:41.16 just a drop in the ocean. 00:21:41.20\00:21:44.67 For 80 to 90 women in the 10 days 00:21:44.70\00:21:47.80 that we are here operating, that changes their lives, 00:21:47.84\00:21:50.67 and that change of life for those people 00:21:50.71\00:21:53.48 that makes it emotional. 00:21:53.51\00:21:56.85 Scheer Memorial Hospital is overwhelmed 00:21:56.88\00:21:59.21 with the inflow of women 00:21:59.25\00:22:00.58 needing surgeries for Uterine prolapse. 00:22:00.62\00:22:02.68 Without these volunteers it would be a tough task 00:22:02.72\00:22:05.65 to facilitate them all. 00:22:05.69\00:22:07.66 In the hospital we have 200 to 300 surgery 00:22:07.69\00:22:10.19 will be there in the year, 00:22:10.23\00:22:11.63 out of 200 to 300 we have 30% to 40% of surgery 00:22:11.66\00:22:16.53 will be done the Uterine prolapse. 00:22:16.56\00:22:19.23 The only thing that is stopping us to doing more 00:22:19.27\00:22:23.20 it is basically the financial aspect. 00:22:23.24\00:22:25.34 If we'll have more, more funding 00:22:25.37\00:22:27.28 we can do even more. 00:22:27.31\00:22:29.01 Right now we do have some funding 00:22:29.04\00:22:30.65 some organization that they come 00:22:30.68\00:22:32.51 and do the surgery themself, but how many we can do? 00:22:32.55\00:22:36.28 It is basically 300, 400, it's countless, 00:22:36.32\00:22:41.96 because the incidents are extremely high. 00:22:41.99\00:22:43.93 Over half a million women 00:22:48.60\00:22:49.93 are suffering from prolapse in Nepal 00:22:49.96\00:22:52.13 and Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:22:52.17\00:22:53.50 is a place they can come to get it fixed 00:22:53.54\00:22:55.74 and ease their suffering. 00:22:55.77\00:22:57.51 It's so apt to say that Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:22:57.54\00:23:00.78 is truly a beacon on the hilltop. 00:23:00.81\00:23:04.18 To have an institution and for Asian Aid 00:23:04.21\00:23:07.35 to provide the opportunity to these ladies, 00:23:07.38\00:23:10.82 who don't have to live with this, 00:23:10.85\00:23:12.59 this is curable, this is fixable, 00:23:12.62\00:23:16.73 you know, that's the benefit. 00:23:16.76\00:23:18.19 Imagine it, when a lady has the operation, she goes back, 00:23:18.23\00:23:22.06 she is now accepted into the home. 00:23:22.10\00:23:25.73 She can mend relationships. 00:23:25.77\00:23:28.14 She can add value to the family. 00:23:28.17\00:23:30.44 She can add value to the community, 00:23:30.47\00:23:32.47 to the other ladies, spread the good news. 00:23:32.51\00:23:36.04 Tell them about how people love them 00:23:36.08\00:23:38.05 and want to make things different for them. 00:23:38.08\00:23:40.82 Isn't that a blessing? 00:23:40.85\00:23:42.18 The good news is spreading among women in Nepal. 00:23:45.02\00:23:47.72 The more women are identified, educated 00:23:47.76\00:23:50.29 and brought to these camps, 00:23:50.33\00:23:51.69 the more women are willing to come out 00:23:51.73\00:23:53.36 and seek medical care. 00:23:53.40\00:23:55.30 This one here, her name is Punyaswari, 00:23:55.33\00:23:58.07 and she actually has-- 00:23:58.10\00:24:00.24 because she has been so grateful 00:24:00.27\00:24:02.00 for what has happened in her life, 00:24:02.04\00:24:03.74 she has now brought 25 more ladies 00:24:03.77\00:24:07.11 who had operations. 00:24:07.14\00:24:09.01 And I think that's really special. 00:24:09.04\00:24:11.05 And so they just-- when we tell them 00:24:11.08\00:24:13.25 we were having the filming today, 00:24:13.28\00:24:14.78 they were just so thrilled to think 00:24:14.82\00:24:16.18 that they could come and say 00:24:16.22\00:24:17.75 how grateful they are for the transformation 00:24:17.79\00:24:20.16 that's happened in their lives. 00:24:20.19\00:24:24.83 Well, it's changed their lives 00:24:24.86\00:24:26.19 and now that they can walk comfortably, 00:24:26.23\00:24:28.23 they are able to work and helps that you know, 00:24:28.26\00:24:30.70 care for their families. 00:24:30.73\00:24:32.07 It's just-- it's a totally transforming thing 00:24:32.10\00:24:35.60 that I think we just couldn't understand 00:24:35.64\00:24:38.64 unless we had actually been 00:24:38.67\00:24:40.04 through the same experiences they have been. 00:24:40.08\00:24:42.64 And for this lady to bring 25, I think that's really something 00:24:42.68\00:24:45.85 because that shows 00:24:45.88\00:24:47.62 how grateful she is for the operation 00:24:47.65\00:24:50.75 that she has had. 00:24:50.79\00:24:52.12 Today Adventist
