Child Impact International is an organization giving help. 00:00:14.28\00:00:18.18 Previously called Asian Aid, 00:00:18.21\00:00:20.18 Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:20.22\00:00:22.88 fostering permanent positive change 00:00:22.92\00:00:25.09 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:25.12\00:00:27.19 and their communities. 00:00:27.22\00:00:28.82 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:28.86\00:00:31.29 in the lives of children and those who are in need, 00:00:31.33\00:00:34.23 serving communities in India, 00:00:34.26\00:00:35.76 Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, 00:00:35.80\00:00:39.07 and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:39.10\00:00:41.47 For the last 50 years, 00:00:41.50\00:00:43.07 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people 00:00:43.10\00:00:46.07 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:00:46.11\00:00:48.91 Driven by the dedication to helping those 00:00:48.94\00:00:51.28 who have the least, Child Impact is an organization 00:00:51.31\00:00:54.58 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:54.62\00:00:56.62 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:56.65\00:00:59.15 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:59.19\00:01:01.22 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:01:01.26\00:01:04.39 to providing an education for orphans, 00:01:04.43\00:01:06.70 deaf, and the blind children, 00:01:06.73\00:01:08.63 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:01:08.66\00:01:11.53 But above all, Child Impact 00:01:11.57\00:01:13.34 is an organization giving hope, 00:01:13.37\00:01:15.44 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:15.47\00:01:18.77 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:18.81\00:01:21.38 This is Hope In Motion. 00:01:21.41\00:01:25.81 Hi, my name is Jaime Jorge, 00:01:25.85\00:01:27.98 and I am excited to be an Honorary Ambassador 00:01:28.02\00:01:30.85 for Child Impact International. 00:01:30.89\00:01:33.15 I've had the privilege of visiting 00:01:33.19\00:01:35.36 India and Myanmar with Child Impact, 00:01:35.39\00:01:38.63 and I am here to share with you 00:01:38.66\00:01:40.83 some very exciting stories 00:01:40.86\00:01:42.90 as well as some important information. 00:01:42.93\00:01:45.63 Now I have with me Jim, 00:01:45.67\00:01:47.00 the CEO of what used to be Asian Aid. 00:01:47.04\00:01:50.54 Jim, how long have you been with this organization and why? 00:01:50.57\00:01:54.51 the change to Child Impact International? 00:01:54.54\00:01:58.11 Well, Jaime, I've been in the role of CEO 00:01:58.15\00:02:00.98 for just over 10 years now 00:02:01.02\00:02:03.52 and this was a big decision for us. 00:02:03.55\00:02:07.72 But the key reasons 00:02:07.76\00:02:09.29 why is a lot of people don't realize 00:02:09.32\00:02:12.69 that India and Bangladesh are Asia. 00:02:12.73\00:02:15.10 Yes. 00:02:15.13\00:02:16.46 There's a lot of confusion as to what Asia is 00:02:16.50\00:02:18.80 and a lot of the Asian countries, 00:02:18.83\00:02:20.74 oriental countries, we don't operate in. 00:02:20.77\00:02:25.07 Secondly, we want to show 00:02:25.11\00:02:27.18 a difference between Asian Aid Australia 00:02:27.21\00:02:30.45 and Child Impact because we are 00:02:30.48\00:02:33.08 two totally separate organizations. 00:02:33.11\00:02:37.79 We also believe 00:02:37.82\00:02:39.65 that we should grow outside Asia. 00:02:39.69\00:02:42.49 So the name change gives us the ability 00:02:42.52\00:02:45.59 that when we're ready to grow into other countries. 00:02:45.63\00:02:49.16 But most important, the name reflects what we do. 00:02:49.20\00:02:52.30 Yes. 00:02:52.33\00:02:53.67 The name reflects that we're impacting 00:02:53.70\00:02:55.60 on the lives of children. 00:02:55.64\00:02:57.51 So we think it's far more relevant 00:02:57.54\00:02:59.84 and will support our growth strategy. 00:02:59.87\00:03:02.64 Now I've had the privilege of knowing you 00:03:02.68\00:03:04.71 and working with you now for a number of years, 00:03:04.75\00:03:07.52 and I have seen 00:03:07.55\00:03:09.02 how much this organization has grown in that time. 00:03:09.05\00:03:13.05 Can you tell me where you're from originally, 00:03:13.09\00:03:15.12 you have kind of a different accent, 00:03:15.16\00:03:17.29 and what you used to do before coming to now 00:03:17.33\00:03:19.69 Child Impact International? 00:03:19.73\00:03:21.50 Well, I'm a New Zealander, 00:03:21.53\00:03:23.20 and I married an American lady from Tennessee, 00:03:23.23\00:03:27.94 and originally she was to move to New Zealand which she did, 00:03:27.97\00:03:32.07 but just somehow we ended up back in Tennessee. 00:03:32.11\00:03:35.18 But prior to that for 30 years, I owned the largest 00:03:35.21\00:03:39.95 promotional marketing company in New Zealand. 00:03:39.98\00:03:43.08 So I had a wee bit to do with promoting organizations 00:03:43.12\00:03:47.02 and companies and also marketing. 00:03:47.06\00:03:50.13 So that was my background. 00:03:50.16\00:03:51.89 And then when I came to the States, 00:03:51.93\00:03:54.20 I got asked to be put on the board 00:03:54.23\00:03:56.63 of what was then Asian Aid. 00:03:56.67\00:03:59.17 And so I took a six-month contract 00:03:59.20\00:04:01.94 to restructure Asian Aid at the time. 00:04:01.97\00:04:04.77 Well, I'm 10 years into that six-month contract. 00:04:04.81\00:04:08.44 Well, and it's made a huge difference 00:04:08.48\00:04:10.11 for this organization. 00:04:10.15\00:04:11.75 Can you tell me what some of your future plans are? 00:04:11.78\00:04:15.98 Well, I think the key plan 00:04:16.02\00:04:17.85 is to grow our sponsorship program. 00:04:17.89\00:04:20.79 As you know, we sponsor children 00:04:20.82\00:04:23.29 in a number of countries, very large in India, 00:04:23.32\00:04:27.36 Bangladesh, and now Myanmar, and Myanmar is the old Burma, 00:04:27.40\00:04:32.00 we're also in Nepal and Sri Lanka. 00:04:32.03\00:04:34.80 And that sponsorship program takes a child based on need 00:04:34.84\00:04:38.81 and puts them in an Adventist mission school. 00:04:38.84\00:04:41.94 And I have to be honest with you, 00:04:41.98\00:04:43.65 the need is overwhelming. 00:04:43.68\00:04:45.01 Yes. 00:04:45.05\00:04:46.38 The church is continually coming to us and saying, 00:04:46.41\00:04:48.88 "Can you help us with more children?" 00:04:48.92\00:04:51.59 And so the growth of that sponsorship program 00:04:51.62\00:04:55.16 is key for us moving forward. 00:04:55.19\00:04:57.13 Yes. 00:04:57.16\00:04:58.49 Because it not only impacts on the life of the child, 00:04:58.53\00:05:02.03 it impacts on their family but it's also key funding 00:05:02.06\00:05:06.23 for these Adventist mission schools. 00:05:06.27\00:05:09.14 So sponsoring a child has a big impact 00:05:09.17\00:05:12.87 on the number of aspects of the child, 00:05:12.91\00:05:15.54 its family, and the school. 00:05:15.58\00:05:18.01 And to be honest, the need is overwhelming. 00:05:18.05\00:05:20.52 Yes. 00:05:20.55\00:05:22.15 We also support four orphanages, 00:05:22.18\00:05:25.05 school for the blind, 00:05:25.09\00:05:26.42 and a school for the deaf in India. 00:05:26.45\00:05:29.39 And the other important area 00:05:29.42\00:05:31.29 that we're starting to get involved in is a program 00:05:31.33\00:05:34.46 that we have called Operation Child Rescue, 00:05:34.50\00:05:39.33 trafficking of girls, the use of boys in beggary 00:05:39.37\00:05:43.14 and slave labor. 00:05:43.17\00:05:44.77 Yes. 00:05:44.81\00:05:46.14 To be honest, in Indian it's so huge, 00:05:46.17\00:05:48.71 it's just overpowering. 00:05:48.74\00:05:50.68 But we are so excited 00:05:50.71\00:05:52.11 that we can be one of the ministries 00:05:52.15\00:05:54.85 involved in this program. 00:05:54.88\00:05:56.75 So we want to build that program also. 00:05:56.79\00:05:59.32 Yes. 00:05:59.35\00:06:00.69 Well, I've been with you to Myanmar 00:06:00.72\00:06:02.06 where I saw that children 00:06:02.09\00:06:04.83 attend the schools there, 00:06:04.86\00:06:06.90 and then they come back home, and share the gospel 00:06:06.93\00:06:09.46 with their families, and their families 00:06:09.50\00:06:11.20 are being baptized, and this is in a country 00:06:11.23\00:06:12.93 where you can't do public evangelism. 00:06:12.97\00:06:15.20 So this is truly a number of different 00:06:15.24\00:06:17.87 outreach opportunities to get people 00:06:17.91\00:06:20.48 to learn about Jesus Christ. 00:06:20.51\00:06:22.51 Now what does this mean, this change, this growth, 00:06:22.54\00:06:26.82 this vision for the current donors 00:06:26.85\00:06:29.48 of Child Impact International 00:06:29.52\00:06:31.25 and the prospective new ones 00:06:31.29\00:06:32.92 that may be thinking about coming on board? 00:06:32.95\00:06:35.59 Well, to begin with, 00:06:35.62\00:06:36.96 for the existing donors nothing really changes. 00:06:36.99\00:06:40.16 We're still located in Ottawa 00:06:40.20\00:06:44.17 in Tennessee near Chattanooga. 00:06:44.20\00:06:47.37 We still retain the same staff. 00:06:47.40\00:06:49.80 We retain the same policies, the same board, 00:06:49.84\00:06:53.21 but we want to do things better. 00:06:53.24\00:06:55.71 We want to represent the children better, 00:06:55.74\00:06:58.25 we want to increase the communication 00:06:58.28\00:07:00.82 between the child and the projects 00:07:00.85\00:07:02.78 we do with the donor. 00:07:02.82\00:07:04.92 So the use of mobile phone technology, 00:07:04.95\00:07:07.82 the use of Facebook, 00:07:07.86\00:07:09.66 and we want to share the stories 00:07:09.69\00:07:12.13 with those people that are supporting us. 00:07:12.16\00:07:14.60 So we want to step up how we support the children 00:07:14.63\00:07:19.00 but also deliver value to the donors. 00:07:19.03\00:07:22.77 Asian Aid is now Child Impact International 00:07:22.80\00:07:26.14 and what is going to happen is simply fantastic. 00:07:26.17\00:07:30.18 More young people are going to come to know Jesus Christ, 00:07:30.21\00:07:33.78 they're going to have hope and a future, 00:07:33.82\00:07:35.65 and you have the opportunity to be a part of it. 00:07:35.68\00:07:38.19 Would you join us? 00:07:38.22\00:07:40.69 Imagine with me for a moment 00:07:40.72\00:07:42.79 that you're a small child living on the streets of India, 00:07:42.82\00:07:45.83 the sandals on your feet lost their comfort weeks ago, 00:07:45.86\00:07:49.50 your favorite shirt just got another hole. 00:07:49.53\00:07:52.50 It's sad, mommy died last year 00:07:52.53\00:07:54.60 but what makes you feel even worse 00:07:54.64\00:07:57.04 is that your dad chose not to be your dad anymore. 00:07:57.07\00:08:00.84 Hey, I'm Shawn Boonstra, 00:08:00.88\00:08:02.44 Honorary Ambassador for Child Impact International, 00:08:02.48\00:08:05.68 an organization that is a supportive ministry 00:08:05.71\00:08:08.08 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:08:08.12\00:08:10.29 You know, previously called Asian Aid, 00:08:10.32\00:08:12.89 they're making an exciting change 00:08:12.92\00:08:14.56 to Child Impact International in order to grow. 00:08:14.59\00:08:18.39 Something like 15 to 25 million little girls and boys in India 00:08:18.43\00:08:22.63 share similar stories to the one I just told you. 00:08:22.66\00:08:25.83 Many are orphaned at a young age 00:08:25.87\00:08:27.54 with little food to eat and no hope. 00:08:27.57\00:08:30.77 Child Impact serves to bridge the gap 00:08:30.81\00:08:32.84 between hardship and education. 00:08:32.87\00:08:36.24 It's a unique ministry that serves children in poverty 00:08:36.28\00:08:39.11 in Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. 00:08:39.15\00:08:44.19 Over three and a half thousand children 00:08:44.22\00:08:47.06 are provided an Adventist education 00:08:47.09\00:08:49.22 and lives are changed 00:08:49.26\00:08:50.76 through the numerous development projects. 00:08:50.79\00:08:53.40 Working in these countries, 00:08:53.43\00:08:55.30 Child Impact has come face to face 00:08:55.33\00:08:57.47 with issues like child slavery, poor or no education, 00:08:57.50\00:09:01.80 child trafficking, abandoned babies, 00:09:01.84\00:09:05.17 lack of clean water, and a high number of orphans. 00:09:05.21\00:09:08.94 This list is not short on challenges, 00:09:08.98\00:09:11.88 yet the needs are being met. 00:09:11.91\00:09:14.12 You know, my family sponsors Sheila, 00:09:14.15\00:09:15.95 a young lady 00:09:15.98\00:09:17.32 at the Sunrise Orphanage in India. 00:09:17.35\00:09:19.25 For the past couple of years, I'm proud of how my family 00:09:19.29\00:09:22.79 has been able to impact her life for the better. 00:09:22.82\00:09:26.03 Word has it, she just started college. 00:09:26.06\00:09:29.76 What I've come to understand 00:09:29.80\00:09:31.73 is that the children Child Impact supports 00:09:31.77\00:09:35.07 are more than just names, or faces on a screen, 00:09:35.10\00:09:37.94 or a flyer, they're people with a story, 00:09:37.97\00:09:42.14 a story whose ending has not been written, 00:09:42.18\00:09:45.31 instead another chapter is being composed. 00:09:45.35\00:09:49.02 It reminds me of something that Jesus once said, 00:09:49.05\00:09:51.92 "Whatever you do for the least 00:09:51.95\00:09:53.52 of these brothers and sisters of Mine, you do for Me." 00:09:53.56\00:09:58.06 Join me and others like me throughout the world 00:09:58.09\00:10:01.60 who are sponsoring a child monthly 00:10:01.63\00:10:03.80 to provide like Jesus did, 00:10:03.83\00:10:05.87 to support like Jesus did, to love like Jesus did. 00:10:05.90\00:10:10.57 You too can make a lifelong impact 00:10:10.61\00:10:13.11 on the life of someone who is waiting for you 00:10:13.14\00:10:15.14 to say yes. 00:10:15.18\00:10:16.75 Yes, today you will consider sponsorship right now 00:10:16.78\00:10:20.42 with Child Impact or one of our other projects. 00:10:20.45\00:10:23.18 Yes, to give hope 00:10:23.22\00:10:25.39 to a precious child today. 00:10:25.42\00:10:30.23 Our television series Hope In Motion 00:10:30.26\00:10:32.89 has been a big success and we want to continue 00:10:32.93\00:10:36.36 to share with you some of the field stories 00:10:36.40\00:10:39.13 that we have filmed over the years. 00:10:39.17\00:10:41.40 So just from time to time, it may refer to Asian Aid 00:10:41.44\00:10:45.84 as we reflect on these great stories, 00:10:45.87\00:10:48.91 as we share them with you. 00:10:48.94\00:10:50.31 The beautiful landscapes, its people, 00:10:58.59\00:11:01.32 the colors and customs, that's India in a nutshell. 00:11:01.36\00:11:04.86 Child Impact International 00:11:14.97\00:11:16.50 has been working in this vast land 00:11:16.54\00:11:18.41 since its very beginning, 00:11:18.44\00:11:19.94 which is over 50 years ago now. 00:11:19.97\00:11:22.18 Primarily focused on child sponsorship, 00:11:22.21\00:11:24.85 Child Impact also has been instrumental in building 00:11:24.88\00:11:27.82 many children's homes and schools 00:11:27.85\00:11:29.95 to complement its sponsorship program. 00:11:29.98\00:11:32.59 The Immanuel English School in Jeypore 00:11:32.62\00:11:34.79 in the state of Orissa is one such school 00:11:34.82\00:11:37.33 that has undergone a transformation. 00:11:37.36\00:11:39.53 We just feel surprised how the things have changed. 00:11:39.56\00:11:45.77 Everything was just like the hill that you see behind, 00:11:45.80\00:11:51.01 full of bushes and unwanted plants. 00:11:51.04\00:11:54.51 So nobody from town ever thought that 00:11:54.54\00:11:58.31 there can be something here, but God has blessed this place 00:11:58.35\00:12:02.72 and we can see a great change. 00:12:02.75\00:12:07.46 Starting with around 50 children and few staff, 00:12:07.49\00:12:10.39 all under just one building, 00:12:10.43\00:12:12.26 the school has now developed into an expansive campus. 00:12:12.29\00:12:16.26 The larger facility made it possible 00:12:16.30\00:12:18.47 to bring in more children from the tribal communities 00:12:18.50\00:12:21.20 as well as nearby villages. 00:12:21.24\00:12:23.41 As the news of the new facility spread, 00:12:23.44\00:12:25.61 many more children from Adventist 00:12:25.64\00:12:27.48 and non-Adventist families 00:12:27.51\00:12:29.31 desire to be educated at the new school. 00:12:29.34\00:12:31.38 Many in rural India 00:12:35.98\00:12:37.32 struggle to earn two dollars a day, 00:12:37.35\00:12:39.69 their only way of earning a living 00:12:39.72\00:12:41.29 is grazing their livestock or working in the fields. 00:12:41.32\00:12:44.69 Here poverty passes on from generation to generation 00:12:44.73\00:12:48.63 and education is not an option. 00:12:48.66\00:12:51.33 I mean some parts of India really seem to be growing 00:12:51.37\00:12:53.94 and really, you know, 00:12:53.97\00:12:55.30 India seems to be really coming up as they say. 00:12:55.34\00:12:57.47 But when you go to the villages and the slums, 00:12:57.51\00:13:00.61 they have not improved in all the years that, 00:13:00.64\00:13:03.31 you know, that I've been coming to India 00:13:03.35\00:13:04.68 which is now more than 30 years. 00:13:04.71\00:13:07.38 You know, when you go to the villages 00:13:07.42\00:13:08.75 and you see, enter some of the slums 00:13:08.78\00:13:10.45 and you see how bad, you know, 00:13:10.49\00:13:12.49 the conditions are that the people 00:13:12.52\00:13:14.12 and the children are living under 00:13:14.16\00:13:15.79 because there's often 00:13:15.82\00:13:17.16 it's not that they don't want to work 00:13:17.19\00:13:18.53 but there's just not enough work available. 00:13:18.56\00:13:22.20 Although a majority of them 00:13:22.23\00:13:23.60 cannot afford to send their children to school, 00:13:23.63\00:13:26.03 they do view education as a catalyst for change. 00:13:26.07\00:13:29.80 Sixty to seventy percent 00:13:29.84\00:13:31.41 we are dependent on the sponsorship 00:13:31.44\00:13:36.14 because majority of this children are poor 00:13:36.18\00:13:39.48 and they don't have any support. 00:13:39.51\00:13:44.62 Without the support of any sponsorship, 00:13:44.65\00:13:47.86 those children would not be here. 00:13:47.89\00:13:50.89 Today, about 2600 children in India 00:13:50.93\00:13:53.73 are sponsored by Child Impact 00:13:53.76\00:13:55.73 and because of their commitment to the welfare of children, 00:13:55.76\00:13:58.67 especially children from tribal communities 00:13:58.70\00:14:01.00 and villages. 00:14:01.04\00:14:02.37 These children are reaping 00:14:02.40\00:14:03.74 the benefits of an Adventist education. 00:14:03.77\00:14:06.94 Devoki Moharia, a science teacher 00:14:06.98\00:14:09.14 at the Emmanuel English School was a former student here. 00:14:09.18\00:14:13.18 I finished my BSc degree in college 00:14:13.21\00:14:16.89 and I'm very much interested in science 00:14:16.92\00:14:19.19 because I was good at science. 00:14:19.22\00:14:21.96 In this school I teach mostly 8th, 9th, 10th. 00:14:21.99\00:14:25.93 I teach them chemistry and biology. 00:14:25.96\00:14:29.63 Devoki was one among the first batch of children 00:14:29.66\00:14:32.37 to be brought to the school from neighboring villages 00:14:32.40\00:14:34.77 when Helen Eager and some of the staff 00:14:34.80\00:14:36.84 from the school visited these villages. 00:14:36.87\00:14:39.31 I sent messages to the church pastors 00:14:39.34\00:14:43.55 if there are any children from poverty level 00:14:43.58\00:14:47.45 and wherever there are no schools. 00:14:47.48\00:14:50.32 So many names came from different churches. 00:14:50.35\00:14:55.42 Then first I went to some orphan children, 00:14:55.46\00:14:59.39 then I came to know that there are two girls, 00:14:59.43\00:15:02.96 very small girls nearby Kotpat town. 00:15:03.00\00:15:06.60 So I went there and I met 00:15:06.63\00:15:09.40 with her father of Devoki. 00:15:09.44\00:15:13.21 Then her father was not willing to send the girl here 00:15:13.24\00:15:18.88 because there was no boundary around 00:15:18.91\00:15:21.08 and there was only one building built by Asian Aid. 00:15:21.12\00:15:25.55 Then when I went 00:15:25.59\00:15:26.96 she was the smallest among the two. 00:15:26.99\00:15:30.09 Then she started crying not to take photo. 00:15:30.13\00:15:33.40 I carried her, I gave her a chocolate. 00:15:33.43\00:15:37.10 Then I make her to stand, 00:15:37.13\00:15:39.50 then I took a photograph for Mummy Eager, 00:15:39.53\00:15:42.27 and that's how I found her. 00:15:42.30\00:15:44.97 I was very happy thinking 00:15:45.01\00:15:46.71 that I'm going to go to a school, 00:15:46.74\00:15:48.44 a hostel, English medium. 00:15:48.48\00:15:50.28 No one knows in my school what it means, 00:15:50.31\00:15:52.51 they don't know how to talk in English and all. 00:15:52.55\00:15:54.65 So I was very happy that I will be the person 00:15:54.68\00:15:56.52 to learn English and all. 00:15:56.55\00:15:58.32 So when I came here, 00:15:58.35\00:15:59.79 first two, three days, I was nervous, means, 00:15:59.82\00:16:01.72 I used to remember parents, all this thing. 00:16:01.76\00:16:03.73 And only one single building was there and no boundary. 00:16:03.76\00:16:07.53 It was like jungle. 00:16:07.56\00:16:08.90 And jungle means I really get very, very scared of that. 00:16:08.93\00:16:12.70 And no boundary, no, nothing, only one building was there. 00:16:12.73\00:16:15.57 Boys, girls, staff, everyone in same building. 00:16:15.60\00:16:18.94 Doing all the activities, eating, sleeping, studying, 00:16:18.97\00:16:21.94 everything in the same building. 00:16:21.98\00:16:23.78 From right at the beginning 00:16:23.81\00:16:25.15 when the school was just one classroom, 00:16:25.18\00:16:27.28 then with the vision of Helen Eager, 00:16:27.32\00:16:29.48 and supporters like Garwin McNeilus, 00:16:29.52\00:16:32.15 this school sprouted into an institution 00:16:32.19\00:16:35.06 that now has, I think about 700 children. 00:16:35.09\00:16:38.26 And of those 600 are sponsored. 00:16:38.29\00:16:40.70 And now we see the success stories coming through. 00:16:40.73\00:16:43.57 Devoki, who was right at the school when it started, 00:16:43.60\00:16:47.50 she did her education at the school, 00:16:47.54\00:16:49.74 then she went away to university, 00:16:49.77\00:16:51.81 and now she's come back as a science teacher. 00:16:51.84\00:16:54.48 It's just so fantastic to see the difference 00:16:54.51\00:16:57.28 that has made with her, 00:16:57.31\00:16:58.85 but also with the children that are here. 00:16:58.88\00:17:02.78 If it weren't for the timely intervention 00:17:02.82\00:17:04.72 of Child Impact International and people like Helen Eager, 00:17:04.75\00:17:08.16 Devoki Moharia's life would have seen misfortunes 00:17:08.19\00:17:11.19 of so many young girls like her in her village. 00:17:11.23\00:17:15.43 Life in rural India is simple. 00:17:15.46\00:17:17.70 People live in close quarters and as one unit. 00:17:17.73\00:17:20.20 During the day, they either go to the fields 00:17:24.84\00:17:27.41 or graze what little livestock they have. 00:17:27.44\00:17:30.11 And there is a clear order of social precedence 00:17:30.15\00:17:32.61 based on gender 00:17:32.65\00:17:33.98 and women have little or no say in its structure, 00:17:34.02\00:17:36.82 often leading to unjust practices and misery. 00:17:36.85\00:17:40.12 In villages parents are uneducated 00:17:40.16\00:17:42.66 and they don't send their children 00:17:42.69\00:17:46.29 when they are small to the school. 00:17:46.33\00:17:48.70 So that is the reason I never went to school. 00:17:48.73\00:17:51.20 In villages that is a rule that when a girl is grown up, 00:17:51.23\00:17:55.14 she should be given in marriage to someone. 00:17:55.17\00:17:59.07 So in my case also it would have been like that 00:17:59.11\00:18:01.24 if I had not have been come to the school and study. 00:18:01.28\00:18:03.45 By this time I would have got married, 00:18:03.48\00:18:05.61 having children and all those things. 00:18:05.65\00:18:09.58 Child marriage is a common practice in South Asia 00:18:09.62\00:18:12.49 and it is more prevalent in India. 00:18:12.52\00:18:14.52 According to United Nations Children's Agency, UNICEF, 00:18:14.56\00:18:18.19 18% of the girls are married by the age of 15. 00:18:18.23\00:18:23.50 Although Indian law has made child marriage illegal 00:18:23.53\00:18:26.43 and the practice is in decline in recent years, 00:18:26.47\00:18:28.80 customs and traditions dictate life in rural India. 00:18:28.84\00:18:31.84 It is like so in Devoki's village, Basuli. 00:18:31.87\00:18:36.31 At present I don't have any of my friends to my age. 00:18:36.34\00:18:39.11 Only I am the girl in my village. 00:18:39.15\00:18:41.28 All are younger to me. All have got married. 00:18:41.32\00:18:45.05 By now she would have got married... 00:18:45.09\00:18:47.19 If she would not have studied here, 00:18:47.22\00:18:49.02 by now she would have got married. 00:18:49.06\00:18:51.23 So by now she would have been lost that way. 00:18:51.26\00:18:54.30 But now she is in God's hand. 00:18:54.33\00:18:57.20 She is doing wonderful. 00:18:57.23\00:19:00.77 Although Devoki grew up in a boarding school at Jeypore 00:19:00.80\00:19:03.84 and went to college in bigger cities, 00:19:03.87\00:19:05.81 she has not forgotten her roots 00:19:05.84\00:19:07.51 and is always happy to visit her family and her village. 00:19:07.54\00:19:12.25 Yeah, I feel really happy 00:19:12.28\00:19:13.62 because I'm born and brought up in this village. 00:19:13.65\00:19:16.42 And even though I stay in town or something now 00:19:16.45\00:19:19.45 but I still have love for my village, 00:19:19.49\00:19:21.96 for my family members. 00:19:21.99\00:19:23.32 I feel very happy when I come back 00:19:23.36\00:19:24.69 to my home and see them. 00:19:24.73\00:19:26.06 Devoki is the only girl to have successfully 00:19:30.03\00:19:32.63 received a college education 00:19:32.67\00:19:34.20 from her village, and in a community 00:19:34.24\00:19:36.14 where women have little or no say, 00:19:36.17\00:19:38.24 she is treated with utmost respect. 00:19:38.27\00:19:43.14 We feel very proud. 00:19:43.18\00:19:44.55 Whenever someone comes to visit us, 00:19:44.58\00:19:46.51 we always tell them about our daughter. 00:19:46.55\00:19:48.45 When she comes here, we are very happy and proud. 00:19:48.48\00:19:51.62 The realization that there are 00:19:51.65\00:19:53.12 many more children out there 00:19:53.15\00:19:54.49 who yearn for a good education can be discouraging. 00:19:54.52\00:19:57.56 But it is reassuring to know that with sponsorship 00:19:57.59\00:20:00.50 we can go about making a difference one day at a time. 00:20:00.53\00:20:04.10 When we are at home 00:20:04.13\00:20:06.20 sometimes we are not getting three meals to eat. 00:20:06.23\00:20:09.04 No good place to sleep. 00:20:09.07\00:20:11.07 So when schools are that like this school, 00:20:11.11\00:20:14.28 they're providing meals, education, everything. 00:20:14.31\00:20:16.48 Sponsors... 00:20:16.51\00:20:17.85 they are struggling hard to educate some other's lives. 00:20:17.88\00:20:21.05 That is something very great to understand. 00:20:21.08\00:20:23.75 Since sponsorship was there I studied. 00:20:23.79\00:20:28.26 So I'm so much grateful to my sponsor. 00:20:28.29\00:20:31.33 And to me it's really wonderful just to see the changes, 00:20:31.36\00:20:34.63 you know, when you see a child come looking dirty, 00:20:34.66\00:20:38.53 and unhappy, and know that nobody cares about them, 00:20:38.57\00:20:42.44 and then after a very short time 00:20:42.47\00:20:44.51 to see the transformation, 00:20:44.54\00:20:45.91 and then after a few years to see them really doing well, 00:20:45.94\00:20:50.18 I think that's what makes it worthwhile. 00:20:50.21\00:20:52.21 Devoki although having better offers 00:20:52.25\00:20:54.38 to teach outside in bigger cities 00:20:54.42\00:20:56.38 has come back to teach in the place 00:20:56.42\00:20:58.15 that gave her a new chance in life. 00:20:58.19\00:21:00.32 Actually, my education, 00:21:00.36\00:21:03.32 my foundation started from here. 00:21:03.36\00:21:05.89 So I thought first let me serve to my place, 00:21:05.93\00:21:09.56 the place where I belong to, where I have got my foundation. 00:21:09.60\00:21:12.70 Whatever talent I have let me show to those people 00:21:12.73\00:21:15.17 so that those students also will learn about that. 00:21:15.20\00:21:18.11 I feel proud because whatever I did for her, 00:21:18.14\00:21:23.45 I have got the fruit. 00:21:23.48\00:21:24.81 Today Child Impact International 00:21:38.09\00:21:40.36 continues to fulfill its commitment 00:21:40.40\00:21:42.23 to the welfare of children who are in need 00:21:42.26\00:21:44.63 and to provide them with an education 00:21:44.67\00:21:46.43 through sponsorship, giving them hope 00:21:46.47\00:21:48.80 and a chance for a better life. 00:21:48.84\00:21:52.47 So they're building lives. 00:21:52.51\00:21:55.68 Students and children they are in darkness. 00:21:55.71\00:21:58.01 They are receiving the light in their lives. 00:21:58.05\00:22:01.88 If they are at home the lights are been off or gone away 00:22:01.92\00:22:05.15 but once they come here 00:22:05.19\00:22:06.52 their light of their lives is being on. 00:22:06.55\00:22:10.43 I think that... 00:22:10.46\00:22:11.79 I feel since I was in this school, 00:22:11.83\00:22:14.53 I'm blessed to be in this position today. 00:22:14.56\00:22:17.17 I've been in this position over eight years now 00:22:21.34\00:22:24.47 and the privilege that I have in my role 00:22:24.51\00:22:26.88 is being able to visit the children that you, 00:22:26.91\00:22:29.98 the donors, support. 00:22:30.01\00:22:31.65 And as I meet them, I see the difference 00:22:31.68\00:22:34.22 that you make in their lives, 00:22:34.25\00:22:36.22 the difference you make in 00:22:36.25\00:22:37.59 where they live in their village, 00:22:37.62\00:22:39.42 the difference you make with their education. 00:22:39.45\00:22:41.72 And then finally when they get a job... 00:22:41.76\00:22:44.19 Just the other day in India, we met a bank manager. 00:22:44.23\00:22:47.76 He was brought up as a sponsored child 00:22:47.80\00:22:50.70 from a very poor village 00:22:50.73\00:22:52.63 and now he has a successful job, 00:22:52.67\00:22:54.77 he has a family, 00:22:54.80\00:22:56.40 and he is impacting the lives of others. 00:22:56.44\00:22:58.81 And, in fact, the amazing thing is 00:22:58.84\00:23:00.98 he is now sponsoring two children 00:23:01.01\00:23:03.55 in one of our programs. 00:23:03.58\00:23:05.98 This is an important time of year, 00:23:06.01\00:23:08.05 it's a time of year where we share 00:23:08.08\00:23:09.95 and where we give gifts to our loved ones and friends 00:23:09.98\00:23:13.52 but it's also an important time of year 00:23:13.56\00:23:15.86 for us here at Child Impact. 00:23:15.89\00:23:18.13 And this year for our annual appeal, 00:23:18.16\00:23:20.56 we have four projects that will make a real impact 00:23:20.60\00:23:24.33 with the people that they serve. 00:23:24.37\00:23:27.17 Our first project 00:23:27.20\00:23:28.54 is the Where Needed Most! 00:23:28.57\00:23:29.90 Fund. 00:23:29.94\00:23:31.27 This is a critical fund for Child Impact 00:23:31.31\00:23:33.98 as it not only helps with the operating 00:23:34.01\00:23:36.34 that we do in six countries but it also allows us 00:23:36.38\00:23:40.38 to have a pool of money for emergencies 00:23:40.42\00:23:43.39 which consistently come along. 00:23:43.42\00:23:45.49 Some are small just like medical needs, 00:23:45.52\00:23:48.09 but others are major 00:23:48.12\00:23:49.46 when there's a disaster or a flood. 00:23:49.49\00:23:51.76 We just ask that you consider the Where Needed Most! 00:23:51.79\00:23:54.83 Fund as one of the ones 00:23:54.86\00:23:56.56 that you can support this Christmas. 00:23:56.60\00:23:59.23 Our next project is Operation Child Rescue. 00:23:59.27\00:24:02.60 Operation Child Rescue is a very dramatic project 00:24:02.64\00:24:06.88 that we are involved in Bangalore, India. 00:24:06.91\00:24:10.68 We are partner with a lady 00:24:10.71\00:24:12.15 who has a team that rescues girl 00:24:12.18\00:24:15.12 from brothels and the sex industry. 00:24:15.15\00:24:17.85 It is simply hard to comprehend how many girls 00:24:17.89\00:24:21.22 and children are taken to the sex industry. 00:24:21.26\00:24:24.36 In India, it's thousands every year. 00:24:24.39\00:24:27.53 The same team helps rescue boys from factories 00:24:27.56\00:24:31.73 where they are poorly paid or hardly paid anything. 00:24:31.77\00:24:35.10 And the other aspect of Operation Child Rescue 00:24:35.14\00:24:38.21 is looking after and rescuing babies 00:24:38.24\00:24:41.31 who have been dropped off 00:24:41.34\00:24:42.68 on the side of the road or abandoned. 00:24:42.71\00:24:45.15 Operation Child Rescue is not only saving lives, 00:24:45.18\00:24:49.35 it's giving those children hope. 00:24:49.38\00:24:51.95 Operation Child Rescue is a key project 00:24:51.99\00:24:55.42 for Child Impact International. 00:24:55.46\00:24:58.09 The next project is the Unsponsored Child Fund. 00:24:58.13\00:25:01.83 At any time Child Impact has over 3,500 children 00:25:01.86\00:25:06.90 and we normally have about 500 unsponsored children. 00:25:06.94\00:25:10.87 These are children we have had to take 00:25:10.91\00:25:12.84 because of an urgent need. 00:25:12.87\00:25:14.68 We also need a pool of children available for sponsorship. 00:25:14.71\00:25:18.61 And yes, once a donor can't support 00:25:18.65\00:25:21.75 a child for some reason, 00:25:21.78\00:25:23.79 they go into that pool of children. 00:25:23.82\00:25:26.05 Once the child is in our program, 00:25:26.09\00:25:28.72 we support them whether they have 00:25:28.76\00:25:30.26 a sponsorship or not. 00:25:30.29\00:25:32.79 Supporting the Unsponsored Child Fund 00:25:32.83\00:25:35.40 is a unique way of being involved in sponsorship 00:25:35.43\00:25:39.07 if you don't want the monthly commitment. 00:25:39.10\00:25:41.57 The Unsponsored Child Fund 00:25:41.60\00:25:43.64 is critical to our sponsorship program. 00:25:43.67\00:25:47.78 Child Impact is very excited 00:25:47.81\00:25:49.74 that we can partner with the church in India, 00:25:49.78\00:25:52.71 with a blind school, a deaf school, 00:25:52.75\00:25:55.05 and four orphanages. 00:25:55.08\00:25:57.15 These special homes and schools 00:25:57.19\00:26:00.02 are just so exciting to visit. 00:26:00.06\00:26:03.12 I had one of the most emotional moments of my whole work career 00:26:03.16\00:26:07.80 when one day I visited the blind school 00:26:07.83\00:26:10.40 and a young girl was just arrived 00:26:10.43\00:26:12.53 at the school that morning, 00:26:12.57\00:26:14.30 they had found her in a village, 00:26:14.34\00:26:16.10 and she had been locked in the basement of the house 00:26:16.14\00:26:18.91 for over six years. 00:26:18.94\00:26:20.88 She just sat in the corner, she wouldn't talk to anyone, 00:26:20.91\00:26:24.41 she wouldn't communicate, and she was just totally lost. 00:26:24.45\00:26:28.02 And I thought is there any hope for this child, 00:26:28.05\00:26:31.65 totally blind by the way. 00:26:31.69\00:26:33.76 Well, I went back eight weeks later 00:26:33.79\00:26:36.52 and here she was, I couldn't believe it, 00:26:36.56\00:26:39.03 she was talking to the other children, 00:26:39.06\00:26:41.60 she was playing. 00:26:41.63\00:26:43.00 And then in the evening, it was just so touching 00:26:43.03\00:26:45.57 to see her singing Jesus Loves Me. 00:26:45.60\00:26:48.90 It really was just very emotional. 00:26:48.94\00:26:52.04 And so these children in a country like India 00:26:52.07\00:26:56.11 have a larger need than here 00:26:56.14\00:26:58.25 because when they're home in their village, 00:26:58.28\00:27:00.38 they are rejected, 00:27:00.42\00:27:01.75 their parents don't know what to do. 00:27:01.78\00:27:03.92 So supporting the blind school, the deaf school, 00:27:03.95\00:27:07.06 or the orphanages is a very real way 00:27:07.09\00:27:10.69 in which you can impact the life of children 00:27:10.73\00:27:13.83 who have a huge need. 00:27:13.86\00:27:15.70 We're very grateful at Child Impact 00:27:15.73\00:27:17.77 for the support that you, the donors, give. 00:27:17.80\00:27:20.54 But December is a critical month for us 00:27:20.57\00:27:23.47 and a month where you can give to one of these four funds 00:27:23.51\00:27:27.14 or any of our projects and have a real impact. 00:27:27.18\00:27:30.75 I just ask that you give consideration 00:27:30.78\00:27:33.52 to supporting our year end program 00:27:33.55\00:27:36.22 for one of these four projects. 00:27:36.25\00:27:38.72 You can contact us on our phone by talking to our staff 00:27:38.75\00:27:43.09 and we've put the number on the screen. 00:27:43.12\00:27:45.36 Or you can go online to Childimpact.org. 00:27:45.39\00:27:49.46 That's Childimpact.org 00:27:49.50\00:27:52.33 to see how you can get further information 00:27:52.37\00:27:55.34 or support us at Child Impact international. 00:27:55.37\00:27:58.84 I want to thank you for your support. 00:27:58.87\00:28:01.04
