I'm Jim Rennie, CEO of Child Impact International. 00:00:01.36\00:00:04.43 And I've now been in this role for over 12 years. 00:00:04.47\00:00:07.77 And this is a very exciting day 00:00:07.80\00:00:10.27 for both me and Child Impact, 00:00:10.31\00:00:13.04 because we're expanding into a new continent 00:00:13.07\00:00:16.14 in the country of Zambia. 00:00:16.18\00:00:18.41 And we're just so excited about this, 00:00:18.45\00:00:21.08 because we've always had a demand 00:00:21.12\00:00:23.18 from donors for Africa. 00:00:23.22\00:00:25.49 And it's just so exciting to be able to expand our work, 00:00:25.52\00:00:30.93 to have a new partner Riverside Farms, 00:00:30.96\00:00:34.80 and to be able to really serve the needy in that area. 00:00:34.83\00:00:39.80 Child Impact International is an organization giving hope. 00:00:46.27\00:00:50.25 Previously called Asian Aid, 00:00:50.28\00:00:52.21 Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:52.25\00:00:54.82 fostering permanent positive change 00:00:54.85\00:00:57.15 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:57.19\00:00:59.19 and their communities. 00:00:59.22\00:01:00.86 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:01:00.89\00:01:03.32 in the lives of children and those who are in need, 00:01:03.36\00:01:06.29 serving communities in India, 00:01:06.33\00:01:07.83 Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, 00:01:07.86\00:01:11.17 and will soon expand to other countries. 00:01:11.20\00:01:13.60 For the last 50 years, 00:01:13.64\00:01:15.14 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people, 00:01:15.17\00:01:18.11 and their investment has proven infinite returns, 00:01:18.14\00:01:20.98 driven by the dedication 00:01:21.01\00:01:22.34 to helping those who have the least. 00:01:22.38\00:01:24.61 Child Impact is an organization 00:01:24.65\00:01:26.61 focused on the welfare of children, 00:01:26.65\00:01:28.82 implementing diverse development projects 00:01:28.85\00:01:31.25 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:01:31.29\00:01:33.42 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:01:33.46\00:01:36.52 to providing an education 00:01:36.56\00:01:37.99 for orphans, deaf, and the blind children 00:01:38.03\00:01:40.86 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:01:40.90\00:01:43.73 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:43.77\00:01:47.60 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:47.64\00:01:50.87 giving hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:01:50.91\00:01:53.64 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:53.68\00:01:55.44 Riverside Farms give us good management, 00:02:08.56\00:02:11.89 they operate a good school, 00:02:11.93\00:02:13.70 so that we can be confident that our sponsorship 00:02:13.73\00:02:17.67 on the ground is very effective. 00:02:17.70\00:02:20.47 When I went to ASI, 00:02:20.50\00:02:22.10 I used to go by this Asian Aid booth. 00:02:22.14\00:02:24.51 And I said, "Wouldn't that be something 00:02:24.54\00:02:26.91 if this could come to Africa?" 00:02:26.94\00:02:29.04 It was just, and I just would dream about it. 00:02:29.08\00:02:31.91 And then last year, I stopped by 00:02:31.95\00:02:33.85 and I talked to Jim Rennie, 00:02:33.88\00:02:35.25 and he says, "You know, 00:02:35.28\00:02:36.62 we're thinking of moving into Africa." 00:02:36.65\00:02:38.72 And, you know, of course, it got me a little excited, 00:02:38.75\00:02:41.09 but I thought Africa, Africa is huge. 00:02:41.12\00:02:43.73 And so last spring when I heard that Jim Rennie 00:02:43.76\00:02:47.06 with Child Impact was coming not only to Africa, 00:02:47.10\00:02:51.53 not only to Zambia, but to Riverside Farms, 00:02:51.57\00:02:53.74 I was so excited. 00:02:53.77\00:02:55.24 And so he came over and it just went from there. 00:02:55.27\00:03:00.84 When I visited Riverside Farms, I was really taken by the need. 00:03:00.88\00:03:06.78 I mean, we operate in six other countries 00:03:06.82\00:03:09.92 and I've seen a lot of need. 00:03:09.95\00:03:11.72 But here I saw families 00:03:15.29\00:03:17.76 that were really, really struggling. 00:03:17.79\00:03:20.63 I was actually very touched 00:03:20.66\00:03:23.10 by the commitment of the parents 00:03:23.13\00:03:26.00 who are fighting a drought, a real drought. 00:03:26.03\00:03:28.87 And so not only did they have a need for their children 00:03:28.90\00:03:33.17 to go to school for an education, 00:03:33.21\00:03:35.68 they actually have a need for their children 00:03:35.71\00:03:37.95 to have a meal every day. 00:03:37.98\00:03:40.05 And so I know that in the Zambian school, 00:03:40.08\00:03:44.25 the kids that are going there are of very genuine need. 00:03:44.29\00:03:49.59 A very few inches of rain in the last two years, 00:03:49.62\00:03:51.83 so they already had a drought 00:03:51.86\00:03:53.19 and then we had almost a complete drought this year. 00:03:53.23\00:03:56.06 I'd say, 00:03:56.10\00:03:57.43 20 years we haven't seen a drought this bad. 00:03:57.47\00:03:59.30 I mean, people are rather straight up starving to death. 00:03:59.33\00:04:01.37 And so when kids come to school, 00:04:01.40\00:04:03.51 one of the things that farm has done 00:04:03.54\00:04:04.94 is provided each of them with bananas, 00:04:04.97\00:04:07.14 because we grow bananas. 00:04:07.18\00:04:08.64 But that's not a complete meal. 00:04:08.68\00:04:10.45 And they need one because they're not getting much. 00:04:10.48\00:04:11.81 And so being able to be involved with Child Impact, 00:04:11.85\00:04:14.62 or some of the hungry money project 00:04:14.65\00:04:16.58 that got involved, 00:04:16.62\00:04:18.25 they're gonna be able to get a full, full meal, 00:04:18.29\00:04:21.09 one meal when they're there. 00:04:21.12\00:04:22.59 And that's an impact that we couldn't do otherwise. 00:04:22.62\00:04:26.93 It just is going to allow the school 00:04:26.96\00:04:28.66 to have better books, 00:04:28.70\00:04:30.03 them to have a uniform, these kids, 00:04:30.07\00:04:34.44 a lot more coming in rags, I mean, straight up. 00:04:34.47\00:04:36.50 And so that's something for them. 00:04:36.54\00:04:40.64 You know, they come to school, they're all in uniform. 00:04:40.68\00:04:43.11 They're all equal in the ability to learn 00:04:43.14\00:04:46.61 and have God impact their life that way. 00:04:46.65\00:04:49.18 The thing that impresses me with these children though, 00:04:49.22\00:04:52.02 from a very young age they have to haul water. 00:04:52.05\00:04:56.09 They have to carry firewood. 00:04:56.12\00:04:58.09 Watch the goats and the cows, herd them. 00:04:58.13\00:05:02.03 And they have to do these home chores 00:05:02.06\00:05:04.70 from when they're just young children. 00:05:04.73\00:05:07.04 There's not one family that was sponsoring 00:05:07.07\00:05:09.74 that has running water or electricity in their home. 00:05:09.77\00:05:13.34 It's very important for us 00:05:13.38\00:05:15.51 to find a partner on the ground 00:05:15.54\00:05:18.51 that supports our mission. 00:05:18.55\00:05:21.42 And so they need to be a strong Adventist mission partner. 00:05:21.45\00:05:25.75 And Riverside's the ideal 00:05:25.79\00:05:27.92 because not only do they have strong management, 00:05:27.96\00:05:31.09 they operate a well run school. 00:05:31.13\00:05:34.73 And then in turn, their job 00:05:34.76\00:05:37.77 is that they're serving the community. 00:05:37.80\00:05:40.40 And so Riverside for us 00:05:40.44\00:05:42.40 is a very unique partner in that they ensure 00:05:42.44\00:05:46.24 that the schools will run but then in turn, 00:05:46.27\00:05:49.21 we're helping them with their mission 00:05:49.24\00:05:51.85 in the local community. 00:05:51.88\00:05:53.98 Well, I feel it's our responsibility 00:05:54.02\00:05:56.82 to help the areas near you. 00:05:56.85\00:06:00.06 As Christians, we need to look out 00:06:00.09\00:06:02.06 for the widows, the orphans, 00:06:02.09\00:06:03.43 the people within our vicinities. 00:06:03.46\00:06:05.56 And I feel a real burden for that. 00:06:05.59\00:06:07.90 And so the thing is, 00:06:07.93\00:06:09.26 once you start helping them with this school, 00:06:09.30\00:06:11.70 it's going to open up a huge opportunity 00:06:11.73\00:06:15.64 for many more ways to help them, 00:06:15.67\00:06:18.74 like you're going to find out that they need food. 00:06:18.77\00:06:21.84 They need many things in their homes 00:06:21.88\00:06:24.25 that we're going to, it's going to come to us, 00:06:24.28\00:06:26.51 and we're gonna have to be ready for this. 00:06:26.55\00:06:28.42 And so it's just like a little opening wedge, 00:06:28.45\00:06:31.35 and maybe that'll give us an opportunity 00:06:31.39\00:06:33.42 to share Jesus with them. 00:06:33.46\00:06:35.09 I feel like these children, 00:06:35.12\00:06:36.46 it's like a brand plucked out of the fire. 00:06:36.49\00:06:39.03 There was this one boy growing up, 00:06:39.06\00:06:41.06 his mother died. 00:06:41.10\00:06:42.70 And his father was a drunkard 00:06:42.73\00:06:44.47 and his older brothers all drank. 00:06:44.50\00:06:46.77 And he came to me one day 00:06:46.80\00:06:48.17 and asked if he could go to school. 00:06:48.20\00:06:50.34 And I, you know, I wasn't sure if I could take another one. 00:06:50.37\00:06:53.44 But I took him and I put him all the way through grade 12. 00:06:53.48\00:06:57.48 He didn't have any discipline in his life. 00:06:57.51\00:07:00.25 He didn't know about responsibility, 00:07:00.28\00:07:02.18 but he learned those things. 00:07:02.22\00:07:03.85 And then my husband put him to work 00:07:03.89\00:07:06.02 and working on the one day church. 00:07:06.05\00:07:09.02 And then after that, we were able to get funds 00:07:09.06\00:07:11.46 and we put him in college. 00:07:11.49\00:07:13.13 And now he's just completing his teaching. 00:07:13.16\00:07:16.56 And he's going to be a teacher. 00:07:16.60\00:07:18.43 And he's, and not only that, 00:07:18.47\00:07:20.30 I gave him Bible studies while he was in school, 00:07:20.34\00:07:22.70 and he was baptized. 00:07:22.74\00:07:24.17 And so I'm just so excited. 00:07:24.21\00:07:25.54 I feel like what would become of him 00:07:25.57\00:07:27.71 if we hadn't reached out to him? 00:07:27.74\00:07:29.68 And not far from us is a big hydroelectric dam, 00:07:29.71\00:07:33.08 and pulled up there looking for someone 00:07:33.11\00:07:36.12 who had a meeting with the government official, 00:07:36.15\00:07:38.29 and the guy pulls over says, "Hey, where's the bananas?" 00:07:38.32\00:07:40.02 And we're known for bananas 00:07:40.06\00:07:41.39 'cause in here everybody likes nice bananas. 00:07:41.42\00:07:43.43 And I said, "Well, we don't have any here with us today." 00:07:43.46\00:07:45.06 And he goes, you know. 00:07:45.09\00:07:46.43 And then he went on to tell us that Al and Pauline, 00:07:46.46\00:07:49.16 the ones who helped with the school project 00:07:49.20\00:07:52.17 had put him in school, 00:07:52.20\00:07:53.57 he'd gone through the school, and he was now working 00:07:53.60\00:07:56.27 for the power company 00:07:56.30\00:07:58.67 generating the power for the whole country. 00:07:58.71\00:08:00.04 So it was cool to see that full circle there. 00:08:00.08\00:08:05.35 I just see so many positive effects 00:08:05.38\00:08:07.75 of when these kids go to school. 00:08:07.78\00:08:09.38 So I'm so excited that we're going to be able 00:08:09.42\00:08:11.42 to even double in one time 00:08:11.45\00:08:14.12 through Child Impact the amount of children 00:08:14.16\00:08:16.12 that we're going to put in school. 00:08:16.16\00:08:18.39 It was because they could see the educational impact 00:08:18.43\00:08:21.63 on the community 00:08:21.66\00:08:23.00 because the parents will come to work. 00:08:23.03\00:08:26.33 And those kids go to school, 00:08:26.37\00:08:27.87 and then the people who can't get an education 00:08:27.90\00:08:30.14 because they can't, 00:08:30.17\00:08:31.51 obviously we can't employ everyone. 00:08:31.54\00:08:33.98 If they're going to school as well, 00:08:34.01\00:08:35.91 more kids are getting impacted 00:08:35.94\00:08:37.28 and they're going to secondary school, 00:08:37.31\00:08:38.65 many of them are going to college. 00:08:38.68\00:08:40.12 And they're becoming part of the community. 00:08:40.15\00:08:43.12 Now, one of the big doctors in town went to Loma Linda, 00:08:43.15\00:08:47.09 we put him all the way through, 00:08:47.12\00:08:48.46 came back and now he runs the Adventist clinic, 00:08:48.49\00:08:50.29 have a big part of running Adventist clinic in town. 00:08:50.33\00:08:52.89 And yeah, my kids, that's where we take them, 00:08:52.93\00:08:55.90 you know, if we have a major problem 00:08:55.93\00:08:57.33 or if I had got sick, going to someone 00:08:57.37\00:09:00.84 who went to the school right there. 00:09:00.87\00:09:02.90 So it's cool to see that. 00:09:02.94\00:09:06.37 That impact and that's from someone who, 00:09:06.41\00:09:08.34 you know, education changed your life. 00:09:08.38\00:09:10.25 Children grow up in the village with nothing to do. 00:09:10.28\00:09:14.65 And so their peer start drinking, 00:09:14.68\00:09:18.15 they start drinking, 00:09:18.19\00:09:19.69 and they just live this useless, listless life, 00:09:19.72\00:09:23.06 and the women will not desert their children, 00:09:23.09\00:09:26.03 and they will do whatever they can 00:09:26.06\00:09:28.03 to provide for them. 00:09:28.06\00:09:30.67 And so you can see how education is going 00:09:30.70\00:09:32.77 to make a big difference, 00:09:32.80\00:09:34.27 because they'll have a purpose now. 00:09:34.30\00:09:36.44 They won't be just hanging out and doing nothing 00:09:36.47\00:09:38.57 and getting involved in drinking 00:09:38.61\00:09:40.74 and whatever other vices around. 00:09:40.78\00:09:43.51 The education, I mean, when you have people 00:09:43.55\00:09:45.51 who are completely without education, 00:09:45.55\00:09:49.62 what hope do they have? 00:09:49.65\00:09:50.99 I mean, they have no hope outside of, 00:09:51.02\00:09:52.95 you know, either become criminals 00:09:52.99\00:09:54.99 or try to survive on a smaller and smaller share of maize 00:09:55.02\00:09:59.29 that only grows, 00:09:59.33\00:10:00.73 you know, three out of five years successfully 00:10:00.76\00:10:03.23 at any level, and even that successes, 00:10:03.26\00:10:05.63 they don't know much about farming, 00:10:05.67\00:10:07.00 they're good farmers 00:10:07.04\00:10:08.37 and it's not that they work hard, 00:10:08.40\00:10:09.74 but, you know, growing corn 00:10:09.77\00:10:11.94 or the maize that they use there, 00:10:11.97\00:10:13.38 I mean, you know, you have the ability 00:10:13.41\00:10:15.64 to get 12 tons a hectare, 00:10:15.68\00:10:17.01 maybe 13 tons a hectare, maybe even more. 00:10:17.05\00:10:20.05 And they get on average, you know, two tons of hectare. 00:10:20.08\00:10:25.49 So you have all this potential, 00:10:25.52\00:10:27.12 but it's not happening, some practices. 00:10:27.16\00:10:30.36 So, without that, you look at that and say, 00:10:30.39\00:10:32.59 "Oh, you know, 00:10:32.63\00:10:34.30 they're not gonna make it without education." 00:10:34.33\00:10:36.26 We're going to work with Child Impact to see 00:10:36.30\00:10:38.90 if we can extend our school up to grade 12. 00:10:38.93\00:10:42.30 And that would be a dream come true for me. 00:10:42.34\00:10:45.41 There's not very many Adventist schools in Zambia 00:10:45.44\00:10:48.41 with Christian education, 00:10:48.44\00:10:49.81 and all the secondary schools are boarding schools. 00:10:49.84\00:10:53.11 And so the price goes significantly up 00:10:53.15\00:10:55.55 for these children and their parents. 00:10:55.58\00:10:58.45 They can't afford to send them. 00:10:58.49\00:11:00.39 So in the previous school we had about 70 kids 00:11:00.42\00:11:03.63 that were packed in. 00:11:03.66\00:11:06.63 And so, now we'll be able to go up to about 120 this year, 00:11:06.66\00:11:11.97 and then we'll add on and we'll go, 00:11:12.00\00:11:13.34 I think we'll end up being about 200 kids 00:11:13.37\00:11:15.37 that will be in the school. 00:11:15.40\00:11:16.77 Yeah, now, with the buildings we have, 00:11:16.81\00:11:18.14 we will have to add a couple buildings. 00:11:18.17\00:11:19.51 One of the buildings we'd like to build eventually, 00:11:19.54\00:11:21.18 once we get sponsorship for it 00:11:21.21\00:11:22.54 will be a library and a science lab. 00:11:22.58\00:11:26.31 Every child belongs to God. 00:11:26.35\00:11:29.28 And they should have this opportunity. 00:11:29.32\00:11:31.69 And if we're able to give them an opportunity to go to school 00:11:31.72\00:11:35.29 and to have the basic things in life, 00:11:35.32\00:11:38.06 we should do this. 00:11:38.09\00:11:39.43 And when you're in Africa, there's plenty of opportunity 00:11:39.46\00:11:43.77 to be a blessing to somebody else, 00:11:43.80\00:11:45.57 you can always do something. 00:11:45.60\00:11:48.24 You know, when someone gives to sponsor a child, 00:11:48.27\00:11:52.04 that child gets an opportunity, and we always talk about, 00:11:52.07\00:11:55.08 well, you know, your kids, hey, your kids can, 00:11:55.11\00:11:57.08 anything they can dream of they can be, 00:11:57.11\00:11:58.51 and we'll use these kind of things. 00:11:58.55\00:12:01.12 It's a lie in Africa. 00:12:01.15\00:12:02.48 You know, often times kids have no chance 00:12:02.52\00:12:04.32 and their future looks very monochromatic. 00:12:04.35\00:12:08.22 You know, it's one, one thing they're going to do, 00:12:08.26\00:12:09.89 they're going to be a sheep herder. 00:12:09.92\00:12:11.26 They're going to be a goat herder. 00:12:11.29\00:12:12.63 They're going to be a cattle herder. 00:12:12.66\00:12:14.00 Or they're going to burn charcoal, 00:12:14.03\00:12:15.36 or they're going to die. 00:12:15.40\00:12:16.73 And when you give kids an education, 00:12:16.77\00:12:18.73 you've changed her life, 00:12:18.77\00:12:20.10 everything becomes possible, 00:12:20.14\00:12:21.47 they actually have that opportunity 00:12:21.50\00:12:23.41 to change the world. 00:12:23.44\00:12:24.77 And you see some of them doing 00:12:24.81\00:12:26.14 and it's really cool. 00:12:26.17\00:12:27.51 So that's really what happens 00:12:27.54\00:12:29.38 when you sponsor a child is they have a chance 00:12:29.41\00:12:32.55 when they would otherwise had none. 00:12:32.58\00:12:33.92 We really appreciate that Craig and Pauline 00:12:37.45\00:12:40.29 made themselves available for our TV program. 00:12:40.32\00:12:44.23 You can see the confidence they have, 00:12:44.26\00:12:47.83 you can see the passion that they have. 00:12:47.86\00:12:50.43 And for us to have them on the ground, 00:12:50.47\00:12:52.93 involved in our program is very, very important. 00:12:52.97\00:12:57.87 And I just want to thank Riverside Farms management. 00:12:57.91\00:13:02.24 I want to thank Craig, 00:13:02.28\00:13:03.61 I want to thank Pauline and Alan, 00:13:03.65\00:13:05.85 for what they've done in getting us established 00:13:05.88\00:13:09.22 on the ground in Zambia, 00:13:09.25\00:13:11.19 and our partnership with Riverside Farms. 00:13:11.22\00:13:14.62 So there's a number of ways that you can help us in Zambia. 00:13:14.66\00:13:18.69 First of all, obviously, you can sponsor a child. 00:13:18.73\00:13:21.76 And for just $25 a month 00:13:21.80\00:13:24.23 you'll be sponsoring a day student. 00:13:24.27\00:13:26.63 They come from a nearby village, 00:13:26.67\00:13:29.00 and we give them a lunch every day, a uniform, 00:13:29.04\00:13:33.78 we supply shoes, and they get a total education. 00:13:33.81\00:13:38.35 So for just $25 a month, you can sponsor a child. 00:13:38.38\00:13:43.18 You may just want to sponsor a child for a year. 00:13:43.22\00:13:46.05 And so you may want to send us 12 months sponsorship at once, 00:13:46.09\00:13:50.66 and we're very, very happy with that. 00:13:50.69\00:13:53.09 But if you don't want to sponsor a child, 00:13:53.13\00:13:55.36 we understand that 00:13:55.40\00:13:56.87 and so you could send a donation 00:13:56.90\00:13:59.40 to our unsponsored child fund 00:13:59.43\00:14:02.34 because we always have children that are unsponsored, 00:14:02.37\00:14:06.27 or simply give us your prayers, 00:14:06.31\00:14:08.48 so that we can move forward and make a difference. 00:14:08.51\00:14:11.51
