Child Impact International is an organization giving hope. 00:00:07.27\00:00:11.24 Previously called Asian Aid, Child Impact International 00:00:11.27\00:00:14.78 is an organization fostering permanent positive change 00:00:14.81\00:00:18.08 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:18.11\00:00:20.18 and their communities. 00:00:20.22\00:00:21.75 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:21.78\00:00:24.32 in the lives of children and those who are in need, 00:00:24.35\00:00:27.29 serving communities in India, Nepal, 00:00:27.32\00:00:29.52 Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, 00:00:29.56\00:00:32.26 and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:32.29\00:00:34.56 For the last 50 years, Child Impact has invested 00:00:34.60\00:00:37.70 in the futures of people, and their investment 00:00:37.73\00:00:39.97 has proven infinite returns, 00:00:40.00\00:00:41.94 driven by the dedication to helping those 00:00:41.97\00:00:44.27 who have the least. 00:00:44.31\00:00:45.64 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:45.67\00:00:47.64 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:47.68\00:00:49.81 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:49.84\00:00:52.25 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.28\00:00:54.45 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:54.48\00:00:57.49 to providing an education for orphans, 00:00:57.52\00:00:59.82 deaf, and the blind children 00:00:59.85\00:01:01.82 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:01:01.86\00:01:04.69 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:04.73\00:01:08.63 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:08.66\00:01:11.70 giving hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:01:11.73\00:01:14.60 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:14.64\00:01:16.81 Bobbili, a small rural town in Andhra Pradesh, 00:01:23.95\00:01:27.08 India has nothing to offer to a visitor. 00:01:27.12\00:01:30.22 Its streets, often bustling and chaotic, 00:01:30.25\00:01:32.85 are typical of rural towns in India. 00:01:32.89\00:01:37.96 Poverty is widespread 00:01:37.99\00:01:39.66 and people struggle to meet ends 00:01:39.69\00:01:41.43 doing menial jobs and often 00:01:41.46\00:01:43.23 tending to paddy fields owned by landlords. 00:01:43.26\00:01:45.50 Visits to villages around here 00:01:52.94\00:01:54.94 only amplify one's perception 00:01:54.98\00:01:57.18 of abject poverty people live in on a daily basis, 00:01:57.21\00:02:00.62 but it is in this despairing and gloomy environment 00:02:00.65\00:02:03.35 we often get to see 00:02:03.39\00:02:04.72 and experience hopefulness and optimism. 00:02:04.75\00:02:07.16 Over the last 15 years, Child Impact International 00:02:15.56\00:02:19.40 has undertaken numerous development work 00:02:19.43\00:02:21.70 in and around the Bobbili area. 00:02:21.74\00:02:24.01 The Sunrise Children's Home, situated about 10 miles 00:02:24.04\00:02:27.24 from Bobbili, is one such project 00:02:27.28\00:02:29.68 that gives orphaned and abandoned children 00:02:29.71\00:02:31.81 an ideal place to live and learn. 00:02:31.85\00:02:34.25 Ten-year-old Akhil Muttaka and his younger brother Charan 00:02:45.79\00:02:49.46 were orphaned at a very early age 00:02:49.50\00:02:51.57 and came to live at Sunrise Home two years ago. 00:02:51.60\00:02:55.27 Their family belonged to a tribal community 00:02:55.30\00:02:57.47 who live in the mountainous region 00:02:57.51\00:02:58.84 bordering the states of Odisha 00:02:58.87\00:03:00.34 and Andhra Pradesh in southeastern India. 00:03:00.38\00:03:04.01 This is Akhil and Charan's aunt's house. 00:03:04.05\00:03:06.61 They're living here. 00:03:06.65\00:03:07.98 Actually, they're up on the mountains, 00:03:08.02\00:03:09.75 live up on the mountain. 00:03:09.78\00:03:11.75 They came down and they came down. 00:03:11.79\00:03:14.12 This is a very poor village. 00:03:14.16\00:03:15.82 And this village has no water facilities, 00:03:15.86\00:03:18.49 no agricultural facilities. 00:03:18.53\00:03:20.23 The poor tortured people 00:03:20.26\00:03:21.60 are depending on the forest products. 00:03:21.63\00:03:23.50 They collect the forest products 00:03:23.53\00:03:24.93 and they survive. 00:03:24.97\00:03:26.53 Every day afternoon, they'll eat some porridge. 00:03:26.57\00:03:29.50 There's no rice and no other stuff 00:03:29.54\00:03:31.11 to fill their stomach. 00:03:31.14\00:03:32.87 In the nighttime only, 00:03:32.91\00:03:34.24 they'll cook some little bit rice 00:03:34.28\00:03:36.04 and some vegetables and they'll eat. 00:03:36.08\00:03:37.81 Every day, they'll eat one meal. 00:03:37.85\00:03:39.65 The majority of children at Sunrise Home 00:03:39.68\00:03:41.88 come from tribal villages and communities around Bobbili. 00:03:41.92\00:03:45.02 And the home is well regarded 00:03:45.05\00:03:46.76 in and around Bobbili because of Child Impact's 00:03:46.79\00:03:49.42 development work among the tribal people. 00:03:49.46\00:03:52.16 A few years ago, Child Impact 00:03:52.19\00:03:54.16 had conducted a vocational training program 00:03:54.20\00:03:56.40 for young men and women from the tribal community. 00:03:56.43\00:03:59.03 It was during one such project that Raj Varma, 00:03:59.07\00:04:02.34 field officer of Child Impact, came across Akhil and Charan. 00:04:02.37\00:04:06.61 In 2014, I came to this village 00:04:06.64\00:04:09.58 for tribal development project. 00:04:09.61\00:04:11.61 So at that time, 00:04:11.65\00:04:13.92 the Child Impact International wants to do 00:04:13.95\00:04:16.08 some development project for the tribal people, 00:04:16.12\00:04:19.52 improve their living standards and the livelihood. 00:04:19.55\00:04:22.26 So that time, these ladies showed these children 00:04:22.29\00:04:26.93 and explained their story and requested me 00:04:26.96\00:04:31.40 to take them to the Sunrise Orphanage. 00:04:31.43\00:04:34.97 Raj Varma had learned from the boys' relatives 00:04:35.00\00:04:37.61 that their father had fallen from a tree and had died 00:04:37.64\00:04:40.28 and the boys came to live with their aunts 00:04:40.31\00:04:42.14 who took turns to look after them. 00:04:42.18\00:04:43.95 When inquired about the whereabouts 00:04:43.98\00:04:45.41 of their mother, 00:04:45.45\00:04:46.78 Raj Varma was told that she had died of malaria. 00:04:46.82\00:04:49.72 Seeing their pitiable living conditions, 00:04:49.75\00:04:52.22 he brought Akhil and Charan to Sunrise home. 00:04:52.25\00:04:54.89 It was at Sunrise the boys revealed 00:04:54.92\00:04:57.13 the real whereabouts of their mother. 00:04:57.16\00:05:00.20 According to my knowledge, when I asked the children, 00:05:00.23\00:05:03.67 when I'm writing the story, Akhil, elder one, 00:05:03.70\00:05:07.90 he said my mother went away with another man. 00:05:07.94\00:05:11.77 I felt very sad and very bad. 00:05:11.81\00:05:14.81 Children, when they're grown up, 00:05:14.84\00:05:17.45 they won't have love towards the parents. 00:05:17.48\00:05:20.45 When they are grown up, parents will come. 00:05:20.48\00:05:23.55 When the mother comes, when the children see them, 00:05:23.59\00:05:27.36 what respect will they have? 00:05:27.39\00:05:28.92 Parents, they will never have respect 00:05:28.96\00:05:31.06 because she just left them and went away. 00:05:31.09\00:05:34.83 And immediately, 00:05:34.86\00:05:36.20 when the children told like that, 00:05:36.23\00:05:37.57 I felt very bad and very sad also. 00:05:37.60\00:05:40.07 But as a mother, I'm giving them love. 00:05:40.10\00:05:44.24 And they know I am the mother, so they love me, 00:05:44.27\00:05:47.34 and I too love them. 00:05:47.38\00:05:48.84 Now they're very happy. 00:05:48.88\00:05:50.61 They says, "Momma, you don't send us to home. 00:05:50.65\00:05:54.15 We don't want to stay there." 00:05:54.18\00:05:56.08 It is not uncommon for a single parent 00:05:56.12\00:05:58.35 in tribal communities to abandon their children 00:05:58.39\00:06:00.79 when his or her spouse dies. 00:06:00.82\00:06:02.52 And the children's relatives don't reveal the whole story 00:06:02.56\00:06:05.23 because they're ashamed of the truth 00:06:05.26\00:06:06.96 and are unwilling to reveal the customs and practices 00:06:07.00\00:06:09.83 that are prevalent in their community 00:06:09.86\00:06:11.77 that may seem bizarre and cruel to an outsider. 00:06:11.80\00:06:16.27 Well, I don't think we can understand 00:06:16.30\00:06:17.91 the life of an orphan. 00:06:17.94\00:06:19.47 They may not know who their parents are 00:06:19.51\00:06:21.78 or they may know the tragic circumstances they come from. 00:06:21.81\00:06:25.68 So we not only give them an education, 00:06:25.71\00:06:28.25 we give them a home. 00:06:28.28\00:06:29.62 But we give them hope, we give them a future. 00:06:29.65\00:06:32.75 And just for a child knowing that 00:06:32.79\00:06:34.72 they've got a future, 00:06:34.76\00:06:36.09 knowing that they've got somewhere 00:06:36.12\00:06:37.49 they can go in their life makes a huge difference to them, 00:06:37.53\00:06:41.50 and we're just so excited that 00:06:41.53\00:06:43.06 we can be a part of making that total difference. 00:06:43.10\00:06:48.57 If they didn't come to Sunrise Home, 00:06:48.60\00:06:50.87 today, they might be somewhere, no one knows, 00:06:50.91\00:06:54.11 no education facilities, no proper facilities, 00:06:54.14\00:06:56.54 and also no food. 00:06:56.58\00:06:59.41 Even though they fill their stomach 00:06:59.45\00:07:01.18 with some porridge, 00:07:01.22\00:07:02.55 that's not a valuable food here, 00:07:02.58\00:07:05.62 not valuable food, but most of the children 00:07:05.65\00:07:08.46 are malnutritious. 00:07:08.49\00:07:12.69 If they didn't come to Sunrise Home, 00:07:12.73\00:07:15.10 by this time, 00:07:15.13\00:07:16.46 the children might have been disappeared. 00:07:16.50\00:07:18.60 Sunrise Home has given Akhil and Charan 00:07:30.41\00:07:32.81 a sense of belonging, a sense of place 00:07:32.85\00:07:35.18 that is safe and comfortable, 00:07:35.22\00:07:36.89 a place where they don't feel like 00:07:36.92\00:07:38.32 they're orphaned or abandoned. 00:07:38.35\00:07:40.26 Thanks to Akhil and Charan's sponsors, 00:07:40.29\00:07:42.66 Child Impact is giving them a new life at Sunrise Home 00:07:42.69\00:07:46.29 and giving them an opportunity to receive a proper education. 00:07:46.33\00:07:50.87 Really, I want to thank Akhil and Charan's sponsors 00:07:50.90\00:07:54.30 for playing an important role in their lives. 00:07:54.34\00:07:57.41 And now they're very happy here, 00:07:57.44\00:07:59.17 I'm only the caretaker, 00:07:59.21\00:08:00.54 who is taking care of them and molding them, 00:08:00.58\00:08:02.78 but they are important persons who had given them good life. 00:08:02.81\00:08:08.42 Well, when I go to Sunrise Home, 00:08:08.45\00:08:11.02 children like Akhil and Charan just come running towards you. 00:08:11.05\00:08:15.26 They're just so happy to see you. 00:08:15.29\00:08:17.33 It's as if they have the sense 00:08:17.36\00:08:19.49 that you are a part of their family, 00:08:19.53\00:08:22.06 and it's one of the most rewarding aspects of the job 00:08:22.10\00:08:25.87 that I have. 00:08:25.90\00:08:27.24 And I'm very grateful that I've had this experience 00:08:27.27\00:08:30.01 of having children just so happy, 00:08:30.04\00:08:32.31 beaming, and if you saw them 00:08:32.34\00:08:34.21 when they had first come in to where they are now, 00:08:34.24\00:08:37.41 we're not only giving them education, 00:08:37.45\00:08:39.88 but we're making their lives. 00:08:39.91\00:08:41.72 We literally become a part of their family. 00:08:41.75\00:08:44.32 And it's just so exciting, and I'm just so grateful 00:08:44.35\00:08:48.99 that I can be a part of this work 00:08:49.02\00:08:51.43 that the donors do. 00:08:51.46\00:08:52.79 Today, Child Impact International 00:08:59.13\00:09:01.60 is reaching out to children in need. 00:09:01.64\00:09:03.51 And for brothers like Akhil and Charan, 00:09:03.54\00:09:05.67 Sunrise Home is a safe haven, 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.84 providing not just their basic needs 00:09:07.88\00:09:09.81 and an opportunity for an education, 00:09:09.84\00:09:12.08 but giving them parental love and affection, 00:09:12.11\00:09:14.62 a chance and a hope for a brighter future. 00:09:14.65\00:09:18.89 Coming, where I do, from America, 00:09:18.92\00:09:22.89 I knew, I read, I've heard the stories, 00:09:22.92\00:09:25.99 I've seen the film clips, 00:09:26.03\00:09:29.40 but until you walk... 00:09:29.43\00:09:35.27 Until you walk on these sidewalks of the home 00:09:39.57\00:09:44.51 where the children are staying and you see 00:09:44.55\00:09:47.78 what is going on in their faces, 00:09:47.82\00:09:52.19 you can be assured that a good work is happening, 00:09:52.22\00:09:56.46 that you can rest assured that 00:09:56.49\00:10:00.06 lives are being changed, children are being made happy, 00:10:00.10\00:10:04.17 and it was a powerful experience 00:10:04.20\00:10:06.30 that allayed any concerns 00:10:06.33\00:10:10.41 that I had about the value 00:10:10.44\00:10:13.17 that I am getting for my sponsorship. 00:10:13.21\00:10:16.85 There's no problem. 00:10:16.88\00:10:18.21 I just love, love what's going on. 00:10:18.25\00:10:20.18 It's been my privilege to be in the role of CEO 00:10:27.86\00:10:31.03 for Child Impact for over 12 years. 00:10:31.06\00:10:34.60 One of the most satisfying parts of the job 00:10:34.63\00:10:37.27 is being able to visit the field 00:10:37.30\00:10:39.73 and meet the children and see the projects 00:10:39.77\00:10:42.47 that you support in six countries. 00:10:42.50\00:10:45.67 It's a privilege to be able to evaluate on your behalf 00:10:45.71\00:10:49.31 how your generous donations are utilized. 00:10:49.34\00:10:52.78 At this time of year, we are very dependent 00:10:52.81\00:10:55.58 on your generous support for our special 00:10:55.62\00:10:58.79 November/December Impact Gifts appeal. 00:10:58.82\00:11:03.09 This is the key appeal for the 3,500 children we serve 00:11:03.12\00:11:08.00 and the special homes and schools we support. 00:11:08.03\00:11:12.07 There are three projects in our special appeal this year 00:11:12.10\00:11:15.77 and each have a need of $100,000. 00:11:15.80\00:11:19.94 The first appeal is for our Where Needed Most fund. 00:11:19.97\00:11:23.71 This fund is exactly what it says, 00:11:23.75\00:11:26.18 where needed most. 00:11:26.21\00:11:28.08 It helps with the cost to run our operation, 00:11:28.12\00:11:30.99 to serve the kids and the projects we do. 00:11:31.02\00:11:34.36 And has also fill the urgent needs 00:11:34.39\00:11:36.76 that just seem to keep coming 00:11:36.79\00:11:38.86 that Where Needed Most fund is key to us 00:11:38.89\00:11:42.16 serving over 3,500 children. 00:11:42.20\00:11:46.70 I just want to share for a moment a story 00:11:46.74\00:11:49.24 from the blind school. 00:11:49.27\00:11:51.24 This is a story of Mali. 00:11:51.27\00:11:52.91 We found her as a five year old girl 00:11:52.94\00:11:55.38 chained in a family home. 00:11:55.41\00:11:57.68 Now you may wonder why was she changed? 00:11:57.71\00:12:00.22 Did the parents not care? 00:12:00.25\00:12:02.18 But the reality was they were a very poor farming family 00:12:02.22\00:12:07.16 who had no idea how to deal with a blind child. 00:12:07.19\00:12:10.53 And after falling down into a hole, 00:12:10.56\00:12:13.96 they felt it was best to restrain her. 00:12:14.00\00:12:17.13 So we convinced them that 00:12:17.17\00:12:18.50 she should go to the blind school. 00:12:18.53\00:12:20.60 And I was actually there the day she arrived. 00:12:20.64\00:12:23.94 She was shy. 00:12:23.97\00:12:25.31 She was reserved. 00:12:25.34\00:12:26.68 She sat in a corner. 00:12:26.71\00:12:28.18 She talked to no one. 00:12:28.21\00:12:29.84 It was sad to see. 00:12:29.88\00:12:31.81 I then came back a month later, 00:12:31.85\00:12:33.82 and you just wouldn't believe the change. 00:12:33.85\00:12:36.28 She was smiling. 00:12:36.32\00:12:37.65 She was happy. 00:12:37.69\00:12:39.02 She was playing with other children. 00:12:39.05\00:12:41.09 And I even saw her singing during the worship time. 00:12:41.12\00:12:45.09 That shows the difference that it makes. 00:12:45.13\00:12:48.60 Our second project is 00:12:48.63\00:12:49.96 for the Blind, Deaf and Orphans. 00:12:50.00\00:12:52.47 We fully support the church run schools 00:12:52.50\00:12:55.37 for the blind school and a deaf school in India. 00:12:55.40\00:12:58.27 These special needs children come from poor communities 00:12:58.31\00:13:02.18 and these schools give them hope. 00:13:02.21\00:13:05.31 The orphan supported are at Sunrise Home, 00:13:05.35\00:13:08.38 a very special home located 00:13:08.42\00:13:10.69 in a lovely setting in rural India. 00:13:10.72\00:13:14.99 These special needs children need support. 00:13:15.02\00:13:19.06 And so giving to this appeal will make a difference. 00:13:19.09\00:13:22.76 The third project is Operation Child Rescue. 00:13:22.80\00:13:26.57 The key activity in Operation Child Rescue 00:13:26.60\00:13:29.87 is the rescue of young girls 00:13:29.90\00:13:32.11 from brothels in the city of Bangalore, India. 00:13:32.14\00:13:35.94 Child Impact supports a rescue home for these girls. 00:13:35.98\00:13:40.55 In the city of Bangalore, we also support a home 00:13:40.58\00:13:43.59 for abandoned babies. 00:13:43.62\00:13:46.02 The trafficking of girls is simply terrible 00:13:46.05\00:13:48.89 and hard to understand. 00:13:48.92\00:13:50.99 You can make a real difference here. 00:13:51.03\00:13:54.13 Once again, we ask for your support 00:13:54.16\00:13:56.73 and you can make an impact with your generous gift. 00:13:56.77\00:14:00.30 Any gift is a generous one.
