Child Impact International is an organization giving hope. 00:00:05.63\00:00:09.50 Previously called Asian Aid, Child Impact International 00:00:09.54\00:00:13.21 is an organization fostering permanent positive change 00:00:13.24\00:00:16.61 in the lives of disadvantaged children and their communities. 00:00:16.64\00:00:20.15 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:20.18\00:00:22.82 in the lives of children and those who are in need, 00:00:22.85\00:00:25.65 serving communities in India, Nepal, 00:00:25.69\00:00:28.02 Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, 00:00:28.06\00:00:29.72 Myanmar, and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:29.76\00:00:33.03 For the last 50 years, Child Impact has invested 00:00:33.06\00:00:36.20 in the futures of people, and their investment 00:00:36.23\00:00:38.53 has proven infinite returns, driven by the dedication 00:00:38.57\00:00:41.90 to helping those who have the least. 00:00:41.94\00:00:43.91 Child Impact is an organization focused 00:00:43.94\00:00:46.51 on the welfare of children, implementing diverse 00:00:46.54\00:00:49.48 development projects 00:00:49.51\00:00:50.85 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:50.88\00:00:52.88 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:52.91\00:00:55.85 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:00:55.88\00:00:58.92 and the blind children giving them 00:00:58.95\00:01:00.89 a sense of place, a home. 00:01:00.92\00:01:03.12 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:03.16\00:01:07.03 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:07.06\00:01:10.33 giving hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:01:10.37\00:01:12.97 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:13.00\00:01:14.87 Welcome to Myanmar. 00:01:26.68\00:01:28.68 Child Impact international has been sponsoring over 00:01:28.72\00:01:31.49 600 children in Adventist schools 00:01:31.52\00:01:34.06 all across the Southeast Asian nation. 00:01:34.09\00:01:36.12 Over 95% of the population here in Myanmar practices Buddhism, 00:01:39.76\00:01:43.93 in fact, Myanmar is one of the most religious 00:01:43.97\00:01:46.40 Buddhist countries in the world. 00:01:46.43\00:01:48.64 The Seventh-day Adventist Mission was established here 00:01:48.67\00:01:51.34 115 years ago and Adventist education 00:01:51.37\00:01:54.54 has played a central role 00:01:54.58\00:01:55.91 in spreading the gospel in Myanmar. 00:01:55.94\00:01:57.55 The challenge is that a decent education is expensive. 00:02:00.58\00:02:03.79 Most people can't afford it. 00:02:03.82\00:02:05.52 This is where an organization like Child Impact 00:02:05.55\00:02:07.96 has such a great impact. 00:02:07.99\00:02:09.72 They are concerned and committed to the welfare 00:02:09.76\00:02:12.09 of children in need here. 00:02:12.13\00:02:15.16 Today, we joined Jim Rennie on a visit 00:02:15.20\00:02:17.63 to Myanmar Union Adventist Seminary 00:02:17.67\00:02:20.17 and see what Child Impact is doing to bring hope, 00:02:20.20\00:02:22.97 salvation and the future to needy children in Myanmar. 00:02:23.00\00:02:26.41 Well, I'm back here in Myanmar, and I've just had 00:02:32.71\00:02:34.95 a four to five hour drive here to the seminary. 00:02:34.98\00:02:38.25 And on this trip, we really want to meet 00:02:38.29\00:02:40.12 some of the students that you have sponsored 00:02:40.16\00:02:43.12 and see the difference 00:02:43.16\00:02:44.49 that we're making in their lives. 00:02:44.53\00:02:46.19 Come and join me on this trip as we meet these students 00:02:46.23\00:02:49.53 and see the impact on their lives, 00:02:49.56\00:02:51.63 which is very real. 00:02:51.67\00:02:53.10 Come with me 00:02:53.13\00:02:54.47 Myanmar Union Adventist Seminary or MUAS, 00:03:01.34\00:03:05.01 as it is commonly known 00:03:05.05\00:03:06.45 is the only Adventist institution 00:03:06.48\00:03:08.38 of higher learning in Myanmar 00:03:08.42\00:03:10.09 and it plays a very important role 00:03:10.12\00:03:11.82 in developing young minds 00:03:11.85\00:03:13.22 who are the future torchbearers of the church. 00:03:13.25\00:03:15.89 Presently there are 600 students at the college, 00:03:15.92\00:03:18.33 taking religion, education 00:03:18.36\00:03:20.16 and business as their fields of study. 00:03:20.20\00:03:22.63 Most of them come from 00:03:22.66\00:03:24.00 financially difficult backgrounds, 00:03:24.03\00:03:25.50 and 160 students are sponsored by Child Impact. 00:03:25.53\00:03:30.54 These young people come from all over Myanmar 00:03:30.57\00:03:32.97 and Child Impact is making it possible 00:03:33.01\00:03:35.21 for them to be able to learn and acquire skills 00:03:35.24\00:03:37.78 needed for employment. 00:03:37.81\00:03:39.78 I'm here at Myanmar Adventist College, 00:03:39.81\00:03:41.98 where there are a group of over 160 students 00:03:42.02\00:03:45.32 that are sponsored by Child Impact International. 00:03:45.35\00:03:49.12 And just meeting with them and just talking with them, 00:03:49.16\00:03:51.83 it's so exciting to see the real difference 00:03:51.86\00:03:54.66 that sponsorship is making in their lives. 00:03:54.70\00:03:57.40 Standing behind me are the future doctors, 00:03:57.43\00:04:00.30 the future dentists, the future nurses, 00:04:00.34\00:04:02.97 teachers and pastors, 00:04:03.00\00:04:04.87 and this will impact on their lives. 00:04:04.91\00:04:07.14 This will impact on their family's lives. 00:04:07.18\00:04:09.84 But most of important, have a big impact 00:04:09.88\00:04:12.58 on the church in Myanmar. 00:04:12.61\00:04:14.32 Just looking at their faces, you can see the difference 00:04:14.35\00:04:17.42 that sponsorship is making, 00:04:17.45\00:04:19.32 not only in the lives of their children, 00:04:19.35\00:04:21.76 but of their families, their community and the church. 00:04:21.79\00:04:25.16 Just shows the success of sponsorship. 00:04:25.19\00:04:28.26 For us in our union, 00:04:28.30\00:04:30.30 the Child Impact sponsors international 00:04:30.33\00:04:34.37 sponsorship is very important 00:04:34.40\00:04:36.37 because it is among the many sponsorship program. 00:04:36.40\00:04:40.94 It is the biggest, it sponsor more than 00:04:40.98\00:04:46.38 600 students in our union. 00:04:46.41\00:04:50.52 We have more need 00:04:50.55\00:04:54.62 for the sponsorship. 00:04:54.66\00:04:56.73 The Child Impact International 00:04:56.76\00:05:01.70 can sponsor mort students, 00:05:01.73\00:05:04.63 more students can learn and mort student can be... 00:05:04.67\00:05:10.27 What to say, in one or other way 00:05:10.31\00:05:14.68 they can help the child 00:05:14.71\00:05:16.04 when they finish their education. 00:05:16.08\00:05:17.41 Education is vital in this country. 00:05:24.75\00:05:27.26 It is important education is subsidized so that 00:05:27.29\00:05:29.72 we can create the environment 00:05:29.76\00:05:31.19 in which children have an opportunity to learn 00:05:31.23\00:05:33.36 and achieve their dreams. 00:05:33.40\00:05:34.86 And the Adventist school system not only helps children 00:05:34.90\00:05:37.70 grow mentally and socially, but they also have 00:05:37.73\00:05:40.34 an opportunity to grow spiritually. 00:05:40.37\00:05:43.14 Well, as we all know, Seventh-day Adventist 00:05:43.17\00:05:45.87 education was prepared and launched through 00:05:45.91\00:05:50.75 very intensive information that God gave through Ellen White 00:05:50.78\00:05:56.08 as to how Seventh-day Adventist education 00:05:56.12\00:05:59.22 ought to be different from other places. 00:05:59.25\00:06:01.46 It was to reach the head, the hand and the heart. 00:06:01.49\00:06:06.29 It was to help people following in Christ's ministry, 00:06:06.33\00:06:09.86 helping children, young people physically, 00:06:09.90\00:06:12.50 mentally, socially and spiritually, 00:06:12.53\00:06:15.00 helping them to become 00:06:15.04\00:06:16.37 a whole person so they can be sent from 00:06:16.40\00:06:19.87 those schools to be 00:06:19.91\00:06:21.24 wonderful testimonies for the lord. 00:06:21.28\00:06:23.51 Seventh-day Adventist education is unique and it is powerful 00:06:23.55\00:06:28.02 because it's from heaven. 00:06:28.05\00:06:29.75 To move forward with its focus in Myanmar, 00:06:29.78\00:06:32.09 Child Impact has established the Educate Myanmar Fund. 00:06:32.12\00:06:35.72 The purpose of this fund is to help sponsor children 00:06:35.76\00:06:38.19 in Adventist Mission schools here in Myanmar 00:06:38.23\00:06:40.76 and help with resources 00:06:40.80\00:06:42.13 and other needs such as classrooms. 00:06:42.16\00:06:44.83 The college has many needs and Child Impact also address 00:06:44.87\00:06:48.20 another important issue of congestion in the dorms 00:06:48.24\00:06:51.27 and other infrastructural needs. 00:06:51.31\00:06:53.04 Currently, it is helping the college 00:06:53.07\00:06:54.64 in finishing the building 00:06:54.68\00:06:56.01 of classrooms for theology students. 00:06:56.04\00:06:57.71 Well, it's quite exciting to see 00:07:10.83\00:07:12.16 what is happening with this building. 00:07:12.19\00:07:13.53 Yes. 00:07:13.56\00:07:14.90 I'm here with Dr. Connolly, who is the president 00:07:14.93\00:07:17.00 of the Myanmar Adventist Union College 00:07:17.03\00:07:20.10 and in talking with him, I can now see 00:07:20.14\00:07:22.50 how important that the theology and religious training 00:07:22.54\00:07:26.51 is from the Myanmar Adventist Union College. 00:07:26.54\00:07:30.15 It's the only source of Bible workers 00:07:30.18\00:07:33.01 and pastors for the country of Myanmar. 00:07:33.05\00:07:36.28 And so Child Impact International 00:07:36.32\00:07:38.69 is really excited that with the help of our sponsors, 00:07:38.72\00:07:42.29 we can sponsor Bible students and theology students, 00:07:42.32\00:07:46.73 but also if possible, we can help 00:07:46.76\00:07:49.26 with the finishing of this new theology department building. 00:07:49.30\00:07:53.70 So let's go in. 00:07:53.74\00:07:55.17 How many boys do you think there are in college? 00:08:00.98\00:08:04.88 Forty eight boys in SDA International. 00:08:04.91\00:08:08.75 The Educate Myanmar Fund is fully committed 00:08:13.09\00:08:15.72 to helping Adventist schools in Myanmar. 00:08:15.76\00:08:18.06 But more importantly, it is committed to helping 00:08:18.09\00:08:20.90 give young boys and girls from difficult backgrounds 00:08:20.93\00:08:23.60 an opportunity to receive an education 00:08:23.63\00:08:26.20 through sponsorship. 00:08:26.23\00:08:28.64 I'm here in the boys' dormitory 00:08:28.67\00:08:30.77 at Myanmar Adventist Seminary. 00:08:30.81\00:08:33.07 It's a large room where there are 20 boys 00:08:33.11\00:08:35.64 sleeping on the floor, 00:08:35.68\00:08:37.25 which to us is a little strange. 00:08:37.28\00:08:39.41 But in fact, culturally, this is how they probably 00:08:39.45\00:08:42.52 live at home in their village house 00:08:42.55\00:08:45.35 and they sleep on the floor. 00:08:45.39\00:08:47.79 I'm here with Sanga, who is an inspiring story 00:08:47.82\00:08:51.69 from sponsorship. 00:08:51.73\00:08:53.13 He comes from a very large family of seven siblings 00:08:53.16\00:08:57.10 and he's the only one getting an education. 00:08:57.13\00:09:00.87 His father is a farmer, a poor farmer. 00:09:00.90\00:09:03.84 And the rest are at home, working in the field. 00:09:03.87\00:09:07.08 Sanga at an early age was given the chance 00:09:07.11\00:09:09.98 to go to an Adventist school. 00:09:10.01\00:09:11.98 And he's been through the high school, 00:09:12.01\00:09:14.92 and now he's at the seminary doing the religious studies 00:09:14.95\00:09:18.69 and theology course. 00:09:18.72\00:09:20.79 And we're real proud of his achievements today. 00:09:20.82\00:09:23.79 Just to show the pressure for finance 00:09:23.83\00:09:27.00 and how poor his family is. 00:09:27.03\00:09:28.96 In those three years. 00:09:29.00\00:09:30.50 Sanga's only been home twice, 00:09:30.53\00:09:33.40 because he has to do a job in the holidays. 00:09:33.44\00:09:36.71 He has to work just to cover the rest of his overhead 00:09:36.74\00:09:40.54 and costs in getting through college. 00:09:40.58\00:09:43.85 And he's really got a dream. 00:09:43.88\00:09:45.85 And, Sanga, tell us about your dream. 00:09:45.88\00:09:48.32 What do you want to achieve? 00:09:48.35\00:09:53.02 I want to be a good pastor, 00:09:53.05\00:09:54.99 so I'm taking here religion major. 00:09:55.02\00:09:58.33 Right. 00:09:58.36\00:09:59.69 So Sanga wants to go on to do his MI in theology, 00:09:59.73\00:10:03.47 and he wants to be a pastor, 00:10:03.50\00:10:05.50 and he wants to be a successful pastor. 00:10:05.53\00:10:08.00 And once again, that's real exciting. 00:10:08.04\00:10:10.27 And we want to support Sanga as he goes ahead. 00:10:10.31\00:10:13.88 And it really shows you how sponsorship through 00:10:13.91\00:10:16.81 the different facets of education 00:10:16.85\00:10:19.35 is now turning this young man 00:10:19.38\00:10:22.35 into a real success story, and we're so proud of 00:10:22.38\00:10:25.65 what he has achieved. 00:10:25.69\00:10:28.72 It's been my privilege to be in the role of CEO 00:10:28.76\00:10:31.86 for Child Impact for over 12 years. 00:10:31.89\00:10:35.33 One of the most satisfying parts 00:10:35.36\00:10:37.17 of the job is being able to visit the field 00:10:37.20\00:10:40.40 and meet the children and see the projects 00:10:40.44\00:10:43.30 that you support in six countries. 00:10:43.34\00:10:46.54 It's a privilege to be able to evaluate on your behalf, 00:10:46.57\00:10:50.11 how your generous donations are utilized. 00:10:50.15\00:10:53.62 At this time of year we are very dependent 00:10:53.65\00:10:56.48 on your generous support for our special November, 00:10:56.52\00:11:00.32 December impact gifts appeal. 00:11:00.36\00:11:03.93 This is the key appeal for the 3,500 children we serve 00:11:03.96\00:11:08.76 and the special homes and schools we support. 00:11:08.80\00:11:12.77 There are three projects in our special appeal this year 00:11:12.80\00:11:16.54 and each have a need of $100,000. 00:11:16.57\00:11:20.81 The first appeal is for our Where Needed Most Fund. 00:11:20.84\00:11:24.55 This fund is exactly what it says 00:11:24.58\00:11:26.95 "Where Needed Most." 00:11:26.98\00:11:28.95 It helps with the cost to run our operation 00:11:28.98\00:11:31.89 to serve the kids in the projects we do. 00:11:31.92\00:11:35.12 And it's also for the urgent needs 00:11:35.16\00:11:37.53 that just seem to keep coming. 00:11:37.56\00:11:39.66 The Where Needed Most Fund is key to us, 00:11:39.69\00:11:42.96 serving over 3,500 children. 00:11:43.00\00:11:47.57 I just want to share for a moment a story 00:11:47.60\00:11:50.11 from the blind school. 00:11:50.14\00:11:52.01 This is a story of Mali. 00:11:52.04\00:11:53.78 We found her as a five year old girl 00:11:53.81\00:11:56.34 chained in a family home. 00:11:56.38\00:11:58.41 Now you may wonder why was she chained? 00:11:58.45\00:12:01.08 Did the parents not care? 00:12:01.12\00:12:02.88 But the reality was they were a very poor farming family 00:12:02.92\00:12:08.02 who had no idea how to deal with the blind child. 00:12:08.06\00:12:11.23 And after falling down into a hole,
