Child Impact International is an organization giving hope. 00:00:07.27\00:00:11.17 Previously called Asian Aid, 00:00:11.21\00:00:13.17 Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:13.21\00:00:15.98 fostering permanent positive change 00:00:16.01\00:00:18.11 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:18.15\00:00:20.22 and their communities. 00:00:20.25\00:00:21.82 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:21.85\00:00:24.39 in the lives of children and those who are in need, 00:00:24.42\00:00:27.22 serving communities in India, 00:00:27.26\00:00:28.82 Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, 00:00:28.86\00:00:32.26 and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:32.29\00:00:34.60 For the last 50 years, 00:00:34.63\00:00:36.16 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people, 00:00:36.20\00:00:39.00 and their investment has proven infinite returns, 00:00:39.03\00:00:41.94 driven by the dedication 00:00:41.97\00:00:43.41 to helping those who have the least. 00:00:43.44\00:00:45.54 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:45.57\00:00:47.54 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:47.58\00:00:49.78 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:49.81\00:00:52.25 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.28\00:00:54.35 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:54.38\00:00:57.55 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:00:57.59\00:01:00.49 and the blind children 00:01:00.52\00:01:01.86 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:01:01.89\00:01:04.66 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:04.69\00:01:08.56 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:08.60\00:01:11.90 giving hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:01:11.93\00:01:14.60 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:14.64\00:01:16.27 Our television series Hope in Motion 00:01:21.44\00:01:24.11 has been a big success, 00:01:24.15\00:01:25.95 and we want to continue to share with you 00:01:25.98\00:01:28.62 some of the field stories 00:01:28.65\00:01:30.42 that we have filmed over the years. 00:01:30.45\00:01:32.69 So just from time to time 00:01:32.72\00:01:34.86 it may refer to Asian Aid 00:01:34.89\00:01:37.06 as we reflect on these great stories 00:01:37.09\00:01:40.13 as we share them with you. 00:01:40.16\00:01:41.53 With a population of nearly 1.3 billion 00:02:01.98\00:02:04.82 and a vast majority of those people 00:02:04.85\00:02:06.52 living off of less than $2 a day, 00:02:06.55\00:02:08.76 many families in India struggle to survive. 00:02:08.79\00:02:11.29 The joy of having a baby can be tainted by the question 00:02:16.36\00:02:19.20 of how they would provide the basics of food and shelter 00:02:19.23\00:02:22.00 needed for their survival. 00:02:22.04\00:02:23.37 So if a parent loses their job or passes away, 00:02:28.01\00:02:31.08 children are abandoned 00:02:31.11\00:02:32.45 as the surviving parent or family members 00:02:32.48\00:02:34.45 cannot cope emotionally 00:02:34.48\00:02:35.92 and financially with the burden. 00:02:35.95\00:02:37.45 It is estimated there are 31 million orphans 00:02:42.32\00:02:44.76 or abandoned children 00:02:44.79\00:02:46.13 struggling to survive in India. 00:02:46.16\00:02:47.60 Sai Eshwari is a seven-year-old girl 00:03:05.55\00:03:08.05 studying in the first grade 00:03:08.08\00:03:09.42 at the Seventh-day Adventist school 00:03:09.45\00:03:11.39 in the outskirts of Hyderabad in South India. 00:03:11.42\00:03:14.36 Her home is just a few feet away from her classroom. 00:03:14.39\00:03:17.33 This is Elim Home, an orphanage established by the church 00:03:17.36\00:03:20.90 and supported by Child Impact International. 00:03:20.93\00:03:23.77 Although, not an orphan, 00:03:23.80\00:03:25.13 circumstances forced her to be brought to Elim Home. 00:03:25.17\00:03:28.04 Malathi, the director and house mother of Elim Home, 00:03:31.51\00:03:34.74 took Sai Eshwari in 00:03:34.78\00:03:36.34 after a chance meeting with her aunt 00:03:36.38\00:03:38.11 after church on the Sabbath day. 00:03:38.15\00:03:40.72 One day, when I went to church, 00:03:40.75\00:03:42.92 one of our church members by the name Ruthamma, 00:03:42.95\00:03:46.69 she asked me that she want to talk with me, 00:03:46.72\00:03:49.19 and she said that she needs some help. 00:03:49.22\00:03:51.89 I told her she can come any time 00:03:51.93\00:03:55.43 she wishes to meet me. 00:03:55.46\00:03:57.83 Then the next day, Sunday, 00:03:57.87\00:03:59.40 she came along with Madhu and her daughter. 00:03:59.43\00:04:04.64 Madhu was married when she was just 16. 00:04:04.67\00:04:07.48 Although such practices are unlawful, 00:04:07.51\00:04:09.71 customs and social traditions 00:04:09.74\00:04:11.31 dictate life in rural India, especially Mangapur. 00:04:11.35\00:04:15.08 After two months of her marriage, 00:04:15.12\00:04:16.92 her husband and his parents sent her home to get dowry. 00:04:16.95\00:04:20.02 Madhu's parents were unable to pay their demands, 00:04:20.06\00:04:22.62 and when her husband's family found out she was pregnant, 00:04:22.66\00:04:25.49 they refused to take her back. 00:04:25.53\00:04:27.90 The following year, 00:04:27.93\00:04:29.26 Madhu gave birth to her daughter, 00:04:29.30\00:04:30.83 Sai Eshwari. 00:04:30.87\00:04:32.80 Soon her situation at home began to get worse. 00:04:32.83\00:04:35.94 Her mother and her brother forced her to worship idols 00:04:35.97\00:04:38.71 and began to resent her presence at home. 00:04:38.74\00:04:41.18 She was becoming a financial burden to them 00:04:41.21\00:04:43.45 and decided to take matters in their own hands. 00:04:43.48\00:04:48.12 Without any reason, 00:04:48.15\00:04:49.48 my brother and my mother asked me to leave the house. 00:04:49.52\00:04:52.85 They told me we had fed you enough 00:04:52.89\00:04:55.09 and told me I was a burden on them. 00:04:55.12\00:04:57.73 When I refused to leave the house, 00:04:57.76\00:04:59.86 my brother hit me on my arm, 00:04:59.89\00:05:02.00 and my mother punched me on my face. 00:05:02.03\00:05:05.87 Fearing her daughter's safety and that of her own, 00:05:05.90\00:05:08.27 Madhu came to Hyderabad 00:05:08.30\00:05:09.87 to seek refuge at her aunt's place. 00:05:09.90\00:05:12.67 After I heard Madhu's story and her pathetic condition, 00:05:12.71\00:05:16.54 I decided to take Sai Eshwari inside 00:05:16.58\00:05:19.51 because though it is an home for taking desperate children 00:05:19.55\00:05:23.35 and mostly the orphan children, 00:05:23.39\00:05:25.59 but still I took a decision that I should take Sai Eshwari 00:05:25.62\00:05:29.62 because being a female, 00:05:29.66\00:05:31.73 I felt that I should help another female, 00:05:31.76\00:05:35.23 small girl who is in need, and I also heard 00:05:35.26\00:05:38.70 that she is getting only one meal a day, 00:05:38.73\00:05:41.37 and I thought 00:05:41.40\00:05:43.04 that she should be in this home. 00:05:43.07\00:05:46.47 And it's not just people who are orphans 00:05:46.51\00:05:48.91 whose parents are dead, 00:05:48.94\00:05:50.28 you might have people who might have one parent or two parents, 00:05:50.31\00:05:53.98 but then, they just 00:05:54.02\00:05:56.58 do not earn enough money to support a family, 00:05:56.62\00:05:59.92 so they really abandon kids anyhow. 00:05:59.95\00:06:03.22 So extreme poverty 00:06:03.26\00:06:05.83 also puts kids into the bracket 00:06:05.86\00:06:08.06 that need help and need help desperately 00:06:08.10\00:06:10.87 and need help now, 00:06:10.90\00:06:12.57 not in 10 years time because they won't survive 10 years, 00:06:12.60\00:06:15.94 so that's what orphanages do, 00:06:15.97\00:06:17.57 they get the children who really need help 00:06:17.61\00:06:20.71 and don't have anyone to help them. 00:06:20.74\00:06:25.05 I guess most often we think that orphanage means 00:06:25.08\00:06:27.58 they have no parents, 00:06:27.62\00:06:29.12 but in the case of some, there may be a single parent, 00:06:29.15\00:06:33.36 but the driving force can be poverty. 00:06:33.39\00:06:36.79 The reality is that the single parent, 00:06:36.83\00:06:39.03 perhaps like Madhu, 00:06:39.06\00:06:40.56 simply can't cope 00:06:40.60\00:06:42.16 because of their circumstances that trapped in poverty. 00:06:42.20\00:06:45.60 And so the orphanage 00:06:45.63\00:06:47.64 gives them hope for their child, 00:06:47.67\00:06:50.11 give something that they could never deliver 00:06:50.14\00:06:52.87 for their child and that makes a huge difference. 00:06:52.91\00:06:58.11 Madhu with the help of her aunt, 00:06:58.15\00:07:00.68 Ruthamma, found a job at a local hospital, 00:07:00.72\00:07:02.75 cleaning the hospital floor and doing other menial jobs. 00:07:02.78\00:07:05.99 She told us she earns 80 to 100 rupees a day, 00:07:06.02\00:07:09.19 less than $2, 00:07:09.22\00:07:10.56 hardly enough to provide her three meals a day. 00:07:10.59\00:07:13.29 Her hardship was revealed to us 00:07:13.33\00:07:15.33 when we went to see where she lived. 00:07:15.36\00:07:17.10 One can only imagine a situation 00:07:17.13\00:07:19.23 where Madhu had to take care of her daughter, 00:07:19.27\00:07:21.47 Sai Eshwari, in a place 00:07:21.50\00:07:22.84 where there's hardly a proper roof over the head, 00:07:22.87\00:07:25.47 a vulnerable place for a vulnerable young woman. 00:07:25.51\00:07:28.88 In spite of all her hardship and vulnerability, 00:07:28.91\00:07:31.61 Madhu considers herself fortunate 00:07:31.65\00:07:33.92 because her daughter now has a safe place to grow up. 00:07:33.95\00:07:37.72 If I would not have taken the decision, 00:07:37.75\00:07:39.82 the mother would have recovered from her health, 00:07:39.85\00:07:43.76 then afterwards, she would have taken this girl 00:07:43.79\00:07:45.99 also as a child labor 00:07:46.03\00:07:47.66 here and there to some houses as a labor 00:07:47.70\00:07:50.60 because we have taken her 00:07:50.63\00:07:52.23 and Sai Eshwari is very fortunate 00:07:52.27\00:07:54.24 and she's a very bright girl, 00:07:54.27\00:07:55.94 and she always stands first in the class, 00:07:55.97\00:07:58.47 and she has improved a lot. 00:07:58.51\00:08:02.38 I'm thankful to God 00:08:02.41\00:08:03.75 for the help my daughter is receiving right now. 00:08:03.78\00:08:06.38 All this is because I refused to worship idols 00:08:06.41\00:08:09.68 and I worship the true God. 00:08:09.72\00:08:11.45 God has been very gracious to me and my daughter. 00:08:11.49\00:08:14.42 I'm thankful to the sponsors who are supporting her. 00:08:14.46\00:08:18.89 Because of the timely intervention of Malathi, 00:08:18.93\00:08:21.60 Sai Eshwari can now grow up 00:08:21.63\00:08:23.37 in a safe and loving home at Elim 00:08:23.40\00:08:25.67 and Child Impact sponsorship is giving children like Sai 00:08:25.70\00:08:29.50 Eshwari and the 137 other children at Elim Home 00:08:29.54\00:08:32.67 the financial support to grow up in this environment. 00:08:32.71\00:08:35.84 This support is not just getting children 00:08:35.88\00:08:37.98 out of desperate situations, 00:08:38.01\00:08:39.75 but it is also having a wider impact in the community. 00:08:39.78\00:08:42.72 Padma works as a cook at Elim Home. 00:08:51.49\00:08:53.80 Her children, Priyanjali and Akash, live here 00:08:53.83\00:08:56.97 and go to school next door just like Sai Eshwari. 00:08:57.00\00:08:59.97 Her eldest son is also sponsored 00:09:00.00\00:09:02.07 by Child Impact 00:09:02.10\00:09:03.44 and goes to an Adventist boarding school in Nuzvid, 00:09:03.47\00:09:06.31 a few hours from Hyderabad. 00:09:06.34\00:09:08.54 Not long ago, Padma lived a content life 00:09:08.58\00:09:11.21 in her native town with her family 00:09:11.25\00:09:13.01 until a tragic incident brought her crushing down. 00:09:13.05\00:09:17.22 My husband found a job in the Gulf as a daily laborer, 00:09:17.25\00:09:20.89 and after two years, he was coming back home. 00:09:20.92\00:09:23.56 We were all waiting for him. 00:09:23.59\00:09:25.19 On the way back from the airport, 00:09:25.23\00:09:27.10 he met with an accident. 00:09:27.13\00:09:28.46 Padma's husband died on the spot, 00:09:37.87\00:09:39.81 and his death not only brought the tag of being called a widow 00:09:39.84\00:09:43.18 but it also brought her financial difficulties. 00:09:43.21\00:09:46.01 All her relatives and neighbors who cared for her, 00:09:46.05\00:09:48.28 after her husband's death slowly began to desert her. 00:09:48.32\00:09:51.75 She doesn't blame them. 00:09:51.79\00:09:53.15 "How can they help me 00:09:53.19\00:09:54.52 and my three children forever," she asks. 00:09:54.56\00:09:56.93 Although her three children receive 00:09:56.96\00:09:58.56 Child Impact sponsorship for their tuition, 00:09:58.59\00:10:01.16 she was finding it hard 00:10:01.20\00:10:02.53 to take care of their basic needs 00:10:02.56\00:10:04.07 such as a decent meal a day. 00:10:04.10\00:10:07.50 There were three kids, 00:10:07.54\00:10:10.27 and she has no one to raise the kids. 00:10:10.31\00:10:12.27 She is all alone. 00:10:12.31\00:10:13.64 She was broken because her husband died 00:10:13.68\00:10:15.01 in a car accident. 00:10:15.04\00:10:17.15 And immediately, we thought 00:10:17.18\00:10:18.51 maybe Asian should definitely pick... 00:10:18.55\00:10:22.08 Should come forward to help such, 00:10:22.12\00:10:23.45 you know, family was in desperately need 00:10:23.49\00:10:25.19 of educating the children. 00:10:25.22\00:10:27.12 Then that's how I got to meet her 00:10:27.16\00:10:28.72 and got to know more about her, 00:10:28.76\00:10:30.09 you know, her family story, how her husband died, 00:10:30.13\00:10:32.69 and what she's looking for the kids. 00:10:32.73\00:10:37.00 After he heard Padma's story, 00:10:37.03\00:10:38.90 Ravi, field officer for Child Impact 00:10:38.93\00:10:41.34 brought her to Elim Home 00:10:41.37\00:10:42.80 and her three children were taken 00:10:42.84\00:10:44.31 into the orphanage and given shelter. 00:10:44.34\00:10:46.68 Fortunately, for Padma, 00:10:46.71\00:10:48.14 she found a job as a cook in the kitchen. 00:10:48.18\00:10:51.15 In Indian setup, if the husband dies, 00:10:51.18\00:10:53.52 a female has to face a lot of problems, 00:10:53.55\00:10:56.72 especially educating her children 00:10:56.75\00:10:58.82 and providing them meals 00:10:58.85\00:11:00.69 and provide all their needs is very hard. 00:11:00.72\00:11:04.19 If we would not have given her job, 00:11:04.23\00:11:07.46 she would have gone out for fields 00:11:07.50\00:11:10.33 or work somewhere 00:11:10.37\00:11:11.70 or sometime she would have sent her eldest son for work also. 00:11:11.73\00:11:15.57 And she might not have any peace of mind, 00:11:15.60\00:11:19.04 and she might also face 00:11:19.07\00:11:20.44 so many problems in the society. 00:11:20.48\00:11:23.68 Yes, we are a child-focused organization, 00:11:23.71\00:11:26.92 but because we're in the field, 00:11:26.95\00:11:28.52 because we're talking to people, 00:11:28.55\00:11:31.09 we do help the wider community. 00:11:31.12\00:11:34.06 For instance, we gave the widow hope by working in the kitchen. 00:11:34.09\00:11:38.46 We also have given 00:11:38.49\00:11:40.16 some of our previous orphanage children responsibilities, 00:11:40.20\00:11:44.77 and they're now field workers. 00:11:44.80\00:11:46.67 So we're making a difference in the wider community. 00:11:46.70\00:11:50.04 When you travel across India, 00:11:53.21\00:11:54.98 it becomes more evident that there are so many people 00:11:55.01\00:11:57.71 including lay members of our church 00:11:57.75\00:11:59.71 struggling to send their children to school. 00:11:59.75\00:12:02.95 Many of our members not able to send their children 00:12:02.98\00:12:05.62 to the Christian schools, 00:12:05.65\00:12:07.12 and these member children are coming into our schools 00:12:07.16\00:12:10.06 because of Asian Aid, 00:12:10.09\00:12:11.43 they are being supported and they're trained. 00:12:11.46\00:12:13.23 Tomorrow, definitely, 00:12:13.26\00:12:14.60 they are our hope and workers for the church. 00:12:14.63\00:12:17.07 I'm really thankful to the philanthropic people 00:12:17.10\00:12:19.53 who are supporting these children to be educated 00:12:19.57\00:12:21.74 and get Christian education. 00:12:21.77\00:12:23.10 I'm very thankful for Elim Home and the sponsors. 00:12:28.48\00:12:32.51 I'm also grateful to Mr. Ravi who introduced me to Elim Home. 00:12:32.55\00:12:37.49 I'm an Adventist but before coming here, 00:12:37.52\00:12:40.62 I didn't know that church had organizations like this 00:12:40.66\00:12:43.73 that helps children in desperate situations. 00:12:43.76\00:12:47.13 I know about Asian Aid, 00:12:47.16\00:12:49.16 but I didn't know they supported orphanages. 00:12:49.20\00:12:52.23 God has opened the doors for me and my children. 00:12:52.27\00:12:55.50 There are so many other widows like me who are suffering. 00:12:55.54\00:12:59.07 I remember all of them in my prayers 00:12:59.11\00:13:01.31 because I feel I'm very fortunate. 00:13:01.34\00:13:05.05 Today, orphanages like Elim Home 00:13:05.08\00:13:07.25 are not only fulfilling its mission 00:13:07.28\00:13:08.98 to reach out to orphan children, 00:13:09.02\00:13:10.85 but as we found out today 00:13:10.89\00:13:12.42 and thanks to Child Impact International, learn. 00:13:21.06\00:13:22.56 In turn, these children not only receive 00:13:22.60\00:13:24.60 a good Christian education, 00:13:24.63\00:13:26.30 but they grow up to be strong pillars for the
