Child Impact International is an organization giving hope. 00:00:07.24\00:00:10.97 Previously called Asian Aid, 00:00:11.01\00:00:13.07 Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:13.11\00:00:15.71 fostering permanent positive change 00:00:15.74\00:00:18.11 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:18.15\00:00:20.12 and their communities. 00:00:20.15\00:00:21.78 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:21.82\00:00:24.35 in the lives of children 00:00:24.39\00:00:25.75 and those who are in need, serving communities in India, 00:00:25.79\00:00:28.79 Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, 00:00:28.82\00:00:32.26 and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:32.29\00:00:34.60 For the last 50 years, 00:00:34.63\00:00:36.06 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people, 00:00:36.10\00:00:39.00 and their investment has proven infinite returns, 00:00:39.03\00:00:41.97 driven by the dedication to helping those 00:00:42.00\00:00:44.27 who have the least. 00:00:44.31\00:00:45.64 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:45.67\00:00:47.71 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:47.74\00:00:49.81 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:49.84\00:00:52.31 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.35\00:00:54.38 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:54.42\00:00:57.49 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:00:57.52\00:01:00.49 and the blind children 00:01:00.52\00:01:01.86 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:01:01.89\00:01:04.66 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:04.69\00:01:08.50 giving hope to children, 00:01:08.53\00:01:10.13 giving hope to communities, 00:01:10.17\00:01:11.90 giving hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:01:11.93\00:01:14.54 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:14.57\00:01:16.24 Carl Ginger's involvement with Child Impact International 00:01:31.19\00:01:34.32 as one of its board members 00:01:34.36\00:01:35.72 has taken him to India many times. 00:01:35.76\00:01:38.43 The vibrancy of life in India 00:01:38.46\00:01:40.13 is something that has captivated him, 00:01:40.16\00:01:42.03 and it's a place to experience and appreciate life. 00:01:42.06\00:01:45.40 For Carl, this was one such opportunity. 00:01:45.43\00:01:48.17 He is traveling with Jim Rennie, 00:01:48.20\00:01:49.90 CEO of Child Impact 00:01:49.94\00:01:51.71 and his fellow board member and friend Dittu Abraham 00:01:51.74\00:01:54.78 to the school for speech and hearing in Kollegal. 00:01:54.81\00:01:57.25 As they drive down into the campus, 00:02:03.92\00:02:05.79 the children appear from nowhere to greet them. 00:02:05.82\00:02:08.42 Their smiling faces and their warm welcome 00:02:08.46\00:02:10.93 was rewarding for the visitors. 00:02:10.96\00:02:12.76 The children were all well groomed 00:02:12.79\00:02:14.56 and were all ready for church. 00:02:14.60\00:02:16.10 I'm here at a church service with these children 00:02:22.50\00:02:26.61 and getting their responses 00:02:26.64\00:02:28.98 toward the questions we ask about Jesus Christ, 00:02:29.01\00:02:32.21 the energy they have, the commitment they have, 00:02:32.25\00:02:34.82 the pleasure in being part of a church service. 00:02:34.85\00:02:37.95 It truly is amazing. 00:02:37.99\00:02:39.62 This is something we can give these kids 00:02:39.65\00:02:41.72 that they would never have, 00:02:41.76\00:02:43.53 never have had the opportunity of knowing Jesus Christ, 00:02:43.56\00:02:46.49 and we are going to see results for eternity. 00:02:46.53\00:02:49.73 The church service was an amazing experience 00:02:58.71\00:03:01.14 that changed some of Carl's unconscious preconceptions. 00:03:01.18\00:03:05.71 These disabled children clearly demonstrated their ability 00:03:05.75\00:03:08.75 to praise God, albeit in their own way 00:03:08.78\00:03:11.25 but it also demonstrated the role we play 00:03:11.29\00:03:13.76 as an institution and a church 00:03:13.79\00:03:15.79 in reaching out to this community. 00:03:15.82\00:03:18.46 When I look at this place, 00:03:18.49\00:03:19.83 I'm convinced that this is exactly 00:03:19.86\00:03:21.33 what God wants us to be doing as a church 00:03:21.36\00:03:24.13 that working with the children 00:03:24.17\00:03:25.73 who otherwise in society would be rejected, 00:03:25.77\00:03:28.47 and cast aside, 00:03:28.50\00:03:29.84 and not provided the means to an education. 00:03:29.87\00:03:32.57 I think this is what the church should be doing 00:03:32.61\00:03:34.94 as part of its gospel outreach. 00:03:34.98\00:03:36.95 This is a testimony to the love of Jesus Christ, 00:03:36.98\00:03:40.75 for the most rejected, 00:03:40.78\00:03:42.55 for the most ignored part of society. 00:03:42.58\00:03:46.29 And these children are just the type of people 00:03:46.32\00:03:48.79 we should be serving. 00:03:48.82\00:03:51.26 Children like this are often seen as a liability 00:03:51.29\00:03:55.06 by the family and by the community. 00:03:55.10\00:03:57.87 This school changes that, this school gives them hope, 00:03:57.90\00:04:02.14 this school gives them an education 00:04:02.17\00:04:04.37 which in most cases enables them 00:04:04.41\00:04:06.41 to have a job and to have a future. 00:04:06.44\00:04:08.94 And then many of these children assist in funding 00:04:08.98\00:04:13.15 or supporting their family or village. 00:04:13.18\00:04:17.92 This school makes a difference far beyond the child 00:04:17.95\00:04:22.49 that attends here. 00:04:22.52\00:04:23.86 The school for speech and hearing 00:04:27.43\00:04:28.86 is what Child Impact is all about, 00:04:28.90\00:04:31.03 helping children in need 00:04:31.07\00:04:32.43 and giving them an opportunity 00:04:32.47\00:04:33.80 to look beyond their disability, 00:04:33.84\00:04:35.97 rejected by their family and society, 00:04:36.00\00:04:38.17 they would have lost all hope, 00:04:38.21\00:04:39.81 but this school has given them hope, 00:04:39.84\00:04:41.91 it has given them a future. 00:04:41.94\00:04:43.41 And for boys and girls that live here, 00:04:43.45\00:04:45.45 it has given them a place they can call home. 00:04:45.48\00:04:48.38 This is also having an impact on their family. 00:04:48.42\00:04:50.99 Their immediate family can be proud 00:04:51.02\00:04:53.05 now their child can achieve something 00:04:53.09\00:04:55.02 and have a job. 00:04:55.06\00:04:56.39 This school is making a difference 00:04:56.42\00:04:58.19 far beyond the education 00:04:58.23\00:04:59.63 the child receives at the school. 00:04:59.66\00:05:02.70 When we say, reaching out to the least of these, 00:05:02.73\00:05:06.10 this is what we mean. 00:05:06.13\00:05:07.84 This school and what happens here 00:05:07.87\00:05:10.77 is reaching out to the least of these 00:05:10.81\00:05:12.91 who would have been rejected by their society, 00:05:12.94\00:05:16.48 their family had no hope, 00:05:16.51\00:05:18.55 this school has made a difference, 00:05:18.58\00:05:20.65 and so they've gone from being the least of these 00:05:20.68\00:05:23.25 to being something to having a career, 00:05:23.28\00:05:26.09 and then actually impacting 00:05:26.12\00:05:28.12 on their village or with their family. 00:05:28.16\00:05:30.13 Lakshmi is a 12-year-old girl at the school. 00:05:36.93\00:05:39.70 She was born deaf and has been at the school 00:05:39.73\00:05:41.94 since she was just two years old. 00:05:41.97\00:05:44.21 Lakshmi's parents separated when she was just a baby. 00:05:44.24\00:05:47.48 And her mother was having a hard time 00:05:47.51\00:05:49.14 bringing her up along with her older sister 00:05:49.18\00:05:51.11 and brother who was also deaf. 00:05:51.15\00:05:53.92 Lakshmi is right now doing fourth standard here, 00:05:53.95\00:05:58.42 and we are hoping that 00:05:58.45\00:05:59.92 she will finish her studies from our school, 00:05:59.95\00:06:01.52 go on to do college just like her brother, 00:06:01.56\00:06:04.19 and be able to earn a living. 00:06:04.23\00:06:06.23 Now the reason why Lakshmi's mother and father 00:06:06.26\00:06:09.53 were separated is because of some family issues, 00:06:09.56\00:06:12.30 and they've been separated for more than 10 years now. 00:06:12.33\00:06:16.37 The father lives with his mother 00:06:16.40\00:06:19.31 in another state, 00:06:19.34\00:06:20.68 and the mother brought up all these three children 00:06:20.71\00:06:24.71 by working in a factory that makes noodles. 00:06:24.75\00:06:28.42 And because she's not able to give them a good education, 00:06:28.45\00:06:31.62 she has put both her hard of hearing children 00:06:31.65\00:06:34.62 over here in our school. 00:06:34.66\00:06:37.59 Lakshmi's mother married when she was just 16. 00:06:37.63\00:06:40.70 Although such practices exist in rural India 00:06:40.73\00:06:43.10 since ancient times, 00:06:43.13\00:06:44.47 it would be hard for someone to assimilate this mentality 00:06:44.50\00:06:47.34 especially for a first time visitor to rural India. 00:06:47.37\00:06:51.54 Lakshmi's mother was also got married at a very young age 00:06:51.57\00:06:57.25 and that's the same thing 00:06:57.28\00:06:58.61 that she did with her elder daughter. 00:06:58.65\00:07:01.28 And we are hoping that that same thing 00:07:01.32\00:07:02.82 doesn't happen to Lakshmi 00:07:02.85\00:07:05.15 that she will be able to finish her studies, 00:07:05.19\00:07:06.96 her college, and then get into a good job, 00:07:06.99\00:07:08.96 and then look for getting married to someone. 00:07:08.99\00:07:11.93 We're hoping that that'll happen to her. 00:07:11.96\00:07:14.16 One can only hope 00:07:14.20\00:07:15.53 that Lakshmi will have the opportunity 00:07:15.56\00:07:17.17 to break the shackles of their long observed traditions 00:07:17.20\00:07:20.10 and compulsions, and hope that education 00:07:20.14\00:07:22.50 will let her have the freedom to choose 00:07:22.54\00:07:24.27 how she wants to live. 00:07:24.31\00:07:25.64 Lakshmi's family lived in a nearby village, 00:07:35.95\00:07:38.52 and Carl was anxious to meet them. 00:07:38.55\00:07:40.66 Upon arriving at her village, 00:07:40.69\00:07:42.29 it was clear that Lakshmi's family loved her very much, 00:07:42.32\00:07:45.16 and she loved her family. 00:07:45.19\00:07:47.20 The home was certainly minimalistic, 00:07:47.23\00:07:49.00 but hospitality was evident. 00:07:49.03\00:07:50.97 Seeing how content they were with 00:07:51.00\00:07:52.73 what they had was such a blessing 00:07:52.77\00:07:54.50 and a valuable lesson to all addicted to consumerism. 00:07:54.54\00:07:58.57 Carl got to talk to Kalavathi, 00:07:58.61\00:08:00.68 Lakshmi's mother through the help of Rajkumar 00:08:00.71\00:08:03.48 who was translating for him. 00:08:03.51\00:08:04.85 Her wish is her two children got educated in this Asian Aid, 00:08:12.12\00:08:15.69 through Asian Aid, sponsored through Asian Aid. 00:08:15.72\00:08:18.09 And there are many children in the villages, 00:08:18.13\00:08:20.03 she also want them to get educated same thing. 00:08:20.06\00:08:23.16 She want more sponsors to come forward 00:08:23.20\00:08:25.03 so that many children can come to the light. 00:08:25.07\00:08:29.14 Although the pain of life struggle was deep within her, 00:08:29.17\00:08:31.94 one could sense how happy she was knowing 00:08:31.97\00:08:34.18 that her daughter Lakshmi was well taken care of, 00:08:34.21\00:08:36.91 and she was thankful for what we could do as an organization. 00:08:36.95\00:08:40.85 Rajkumar, we've just been talking to Lakshmi's mother. 00:08:40.88\00:08:44.55 There must be lots of other children in these villages 00:08:44.59\00:08:48.42 who have disabilities. 00:08:48.46\00:08:52.09 What would be the situation if there was no help? 00:08:52.13\00:08:57.00 If there is no outside help, for example, like Asian Aid, 00:08:57.03\00:09:01.17 the other NGOs in India, 00:09:01.20\00:09:04.04 families like this will suffer very much. 00:09:04.07\00:09:09.24 And the pathetic situation is, 00:09:09.28\00:09:10.98 if there are no NGOs coming forward 00:09:11.01\00:09:13.15 to help them like these kids, 00:09:13.18\00:09:16.02 the society will be dropping them to one corner. 00:09:16.05\00:09:20.09 They'll not come out, and they can't get exposure. 00:09:20.12\00:09:24.86 If people, 00:09:24.89\00:09:28.03 the society from outside 00:09:28.06\00:09:29.76 comes and helps people like these small villages, 00:09:29.80\00:09:32.93 remote villages, 00:09:32.97\00:09:34.70 children like Lakshmi will come up much brighter. 00:09:34.74\00:09:38.34 Their future, they can read it. 00:09:38.37\00:09:40.68 Otherwise, their future will be in debris. 00:09:40.71\00:09:42.81 You know, this is an example of what can happen 00:09:47.08\00:09:50.82 when someone like Asian Aid gets involved 00:09:50.85\00:09:53.49 and sponsors get involved in the child's life. 00:09:53.52\00:09:56.52 We can transform the person, give them a future, 00:09:56.56\00:10:00.86 create opportunities for them to be themselves, 00:10:00.90\00:10:04.03 be what God intended them to be. 00:10:04.07\00:10:07.10 What a privilege to create, and generate, 00:10:07.14\00:10:11.01 and multiply hope. 00:10:11.04\00:10:12.74 For someone like Lakshmi, 00:10:23.52\00:10:24.95 having a loving family is a blessing. 00:10:24.99\00:10:27.09 Because her mother wanted the best for her, 00:10:27.12\00:10:29.36 she was willing to leave her 00:10:29.39\00:10:30.73 in a school's boarding environment 00:10:30.76\00:10:32.56 just so she could give her the education 00:10:32.59\00:10:34.63 she otherwise would be unable to provide. 00:10:34.66\00:10:37.77 Most of these children understand their difficulties 00:10:37.80\00:10:40.57 at home, and understand the opportunities 00:10:40.60\00:10:42.14 they have been given by their sponsors, 00:10:42.17\00:10:44.11 and are ever thankful for the part 00:10:44.14\00:10:45.77 they are playing in their lives. 00:10:45.81\00:10:48.74 I'm sure that these children are very thankful 00:10:48.78\00:10:52.21 to their sponsors 00:10:52.25\00:10:53.58 and the sponsors should know this 00:10:53.62\00:10:56.05 that every day the children pray for them. 00:10:56.08\00:10:58.99 There's not a day goes 00:10:59.02\00:11:00.86 without the child praying for their sponsors. 00:11:00.89\00:11:03.59 And we are very thankful to the sponsors. 00:11:03.63\00:11:06.26 And they know the importance of sponsorship. 00:11:06.29\00:11:09.33 It's because of that sponsorship that they are here, 00:11:09.36\00:11:12.93 and they are having new friends, 00:11:12.97\00:11:16.20 a new life given to them. 00:11:16.24\00:11:17.91 Well, when I come to the school, 00:11:21.11\00:11:23.61 it's just touching. 00:11:23.65\00:11:25.31 I wish the sponsors could be here. 00:11:25.35\00:11:27.28 I wish the sponsors could really see 00:11:27.32\00:11:30.09 beyond the difference they're making. 00:11:30.12\00:11:32.12 The kids are so happy. 00:11:32.15\00:11:33.79 The kids want to touch you, 00:11:33.82\00:11:35.16 they want to communicate with you. 00:11:35.19\00:11:37.19 And without the sponsors, this simply wouldn't happen. 00:11:37.23\00:11:41.20 It's bigger than their education. 00:11:41.23\00:11:43.03 It's bigger than the child at the desk. 00:11:43.06\00:11:45.20 It's giving these kids a delight in life, 00:11:45.23\00:11:48.04 and that's what I see when I come here. 00:11:48.07\00:11:51.91 When Jesus was on this earth, He invited the poor, 00:11:51.94\00:11:54.94 the blind, the lame, the deaf into the temple 00:11:54.98\00:11:57.98 and had fellowship with them. 00:11:58.01\00:11:59.65 Jesus mentioned that when we do service 00:11:59.68\00:12:01.92 to the least of these, 00:12:01.95\00:12:03.39 we are doing service to Him, 00:12:03.42\00:12:05.05 and this is what Jesus meant to take care of the ones 00:12:05.09\00:12:07.92 who are less fortunate than us. 00:12:07.96\00:12:09.89 What a blessing it is for us to be in His service. 00:12:09.92\00:12:13.29 Many times I question myself asking, 00:12:13.33\00:12:16.26 "Am I doing the preaching work here, 00:12:16.30\00:12:20.17 or am I doing some kind of service?" 00:12:20.20\00:12:22.14 But then I realize 00:12:22.17\00:12:23.51 what Jesus told that true religion 00:12:23.54\00:12:25.57 is to take care of the orphans, the widows, 00:12:25.61\00:12:29.84 and the less fortunate ones. 00:12:29.88\00:12:31.88 And then by seeing the lives of these children transforming, 00:12:31.91\00:12:35.58 it gives me hope and courage, Yes, what we are doing here is, 00:12:35.62\00:12:39.35 any day, the best thing that we must be doing. 00:12:39.39\00:12:42.86 It's important that the church has these services going on. 00:12:42.89\00:12:47.10 Today, this school for speech and hearing 00:12:50.17\00:12:52.63 is a beacon for Christ in this area. 00:12:52.67\00:12:54.90 With this school in Kollegal, 00:12:54.94\00:12:56.37 Child Impact International 00:12:56.40\00:12:57.87 is not only bringing hope to the children, 00:12:57.91\00:13:00.28 but also the community 00:13:00.31\00:13:01.64 as it sees practical Christianity in action. 00:13:01.68\00:13:04.55 The church could not have scripted a better outcome, 00:13:04.58\00:13:07.38 just being there and demonstrating love 00:13:07.42\00:13:09.48 on a consistent basis 00:13:09.52\00:13:11.05 reflects the image of God. 00:13:11.09\00:13:12.55 These children are preparing for their final exams tomorrow. 00:13:15.79\00:13:20.00 And it's clear 00:13:20.03\00:13:22.53 that these children are being prepared 00:13:22.56\00:13:25.03 not just to survive, 00:13:25.07\00:13:26.60 but for a future tomorrow and a future for eternity. 00:13:26.63\00:13:30.94 And for Asian Aid to be involved 00:13:30.97\00:13:33.84 in creating these opportunities really warms my heart. 00:13:33.88\00:13:36.98 It's helping me see what it is really to be human. 00:13:37.01\00:13:41.35 And I'm so glad to be part of that. 00:13:41.38\00:13:43.69
