Child Impact International is an organization giving hope, 00:00:07.74\00:00:11.57 previously called Asian Aid. 00:00:11.61\00:00:13.68 Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:13.71\00:00:16.34 fostering permanent positive change in the lives 00:00:16.38\00:00:19.21 of disadvantaged children and their communities. 00:00:19.25\00:00:22.32 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:22.35\00:00:24.85 in the lives of children and those who are in need, 00:00:24.89\00:00:27.66 serving communities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, 00:00:27.69\00:00:31.73 Myanmar, and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:31.76\00:00:35.10 For the last 50 years, Child Impact has invested 00:00:35.13\00:00:38.13 in the futures of people, 00:00:38.17\00:00:39.53 and their investment has proven infinite returns, 00:00:39.57\00:00:42.47 driven by the dedication to helping 00:00:42.50\00:00:44.44 those who have the least. 00:00:44.47\00:00:46.11 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:46.14\00:00:48.14 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:48.18\00:00:50.25 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:50.28\00:00:52.78 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.81\00:00:54.95 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:54.98\00:00:58.02 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:00:58.05\00:01:00.99 and the blind children giving them 00:01:01.02\00:01:02.86 a sense of place, a home. 00:01:02.89\00:01:04.93 But above all, 00:01:04.96\00:01:06.29 Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:06.33\00:01:09.10 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:09.13\00:01:12.33 giving hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:01:12.37\00:01:15.10 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:15.14\00:01:17.11 You look out over the field that will provide 00:01:50.27\00:01:52.57 you and your family with food for the coming year 00:01:52.61\00:01:55.14 and seed for the next. 00:01:55.18\00:01:57.15 But all you see is miles of sun-baked ground, 00:01:57.18\00:02:00.65 and withered plants. 00:02:00.68\00:02:02.52 Welcome to Zambia. 00:02:02.55\00:02:04.89 Last year, we had a partial crop failure here in Zambia. 00:02:04.92\00:02:07.92 And this year, there's been a complete crop failure. 00:02:07.96\00:02:10.39 If you go and talk to the oldest people 00:02:10.43\00:02:11.89 in the villages, 00:02:11.93\00:02:13.26 they'll tell you this is the worst famine drought 00:02:13.29\00:02:17.87 that they've seen in their lifetime, 00:02:17.90\00:02:19.47 which is saying something we've had some extraordinary 00:02:19.50\00:02:21.34 famines and to the period of last 15 years. 00:02:21.37\00:02:24.44 And so we're seeing that need, 00:02:24.47\00:02:25.91 that hunger translating into people's demand 00:02:25.94\00:02:29.44 for work, just general need. 00:02:29.48\00:02:33.88 Riverside Farms began with the mission to reach 00:02:33.92\00:02:36.38 the needs of the people in Zambia, 00:02:36.42\00:02:38.05 located 70 miles south of Lusaka, 00:02:38.09\00:02:40.49 which is the capital of Zambia. 00:02:40.52\00:02:41.86 They started this mission in the early 70s. 00:02:41.89\00:02:44.26 Greg Harding is the executive director 00:02:44.29\00:02:46.16 for Riverside Farms. 00:02:46.19\00:02:48.23 Our mission is to reach the needs 00:02:48.26\00:02:50.07 of people here in Zambia. 00:02:50.10\00:02:52.33 And that encompasses both their physical needs, 00:02:52.37\00:02:55.24 which are huge in Africa, 00:02:55.27\00:02:57.37 and also the spiritual and education. 00:02:57.41\00:03:00.88 One of the ways that Riverside Farms 00:03:00.91\00:03:02.24 is helping the people of Southern Zambia 00:03:02.28\00:03:03.81 is through farming. 00:03:03.85\00:03:05.18 Food is a resource that many of us take for granted. 00:03:05.21\00:03:07.98 But for the poor villagers, 00:03:08.02\00:03:09.42 it is something that they struggle 00:03:09.45\00:03:10.79 to get enough of. 00:03:10.82\00:03:12.15 While Zambia's economy is growing 00:03:12.19\00:03:13.66 and doing better than many other African countries, 00:03:13.69\00:03:15.82 it still isn't enough. 00:03:15.86\00:03:17.86 So the farm is something I personally really love, 00:03:17.89\00:03:20.56 love being on the farm working on it. 00:03:20.60\00:03:22.90 We grow, bananas is our primary crop 00:03:22.93\00:03:25.77 through about 34 hectors just over 80 acres of bananas. 00:03:25.80\00:03:30.91 And those produce about 00:03:30.94\00:03:33.84 170 truckloads of bananas every year. 00:03:33.88\00:03:36.24 About 60% of Zambians 00:03:45.72\00:03:47.49 live under the nation's poverty line 00:03:47.52\00:03:49.36 with rural poverty standing at almost 78%. 00:03:49.39\00:03:52.86 And in 2007 study, 00:03:52.89\00:03:54.60 Zambia was ranked 117th out of 128 countries 00:03:54.63\00:03:59.27 on the global competitiveness index 00:03:59.30\00:04:01.54 because of many factors 00:04:01.57\00:04:02.90 that have negatively affected them economically. 00:04:02.94\00:04:06.31 Most Zambians spend 60% of their income on food, 00:04:06.34\00:04:09.31 which leaves them with no resources 00:04:09.34\00:04:11.11 to send their children to school. 00:04:11.15\00:04:13.31 Not only that, 00:04:13.35\00:04:14.68 but when your income also depends on growing food, 00:04:14.72\00:04:16.99 you are left with a huge problem. 00:04:17.02\00:04:18.89 Lack of food is not the only issue. 00:04:18.92\00:04:21.16 More than one out of six Zambians 00:04:21.19\00:04:23.19 is currently suffering from HIV or AIDS, 00:04:23.22\00:04:26.06 making it one of the most 00:04:26.09\00:04:27.43 severely impacted countries from this disease in the world. 00:04:27.46\00:04:30.50 These factors have had a devastating effect 00:04:30.53\00:04:32.53 on life expectancy, 00:04:32.57\00:04:33.90 which is currently around 40 years. 00:04:33.94\00:04:36.20 Many children are left orphaned 00:04:36.24\00:04:37.87 and without hope for the future. 00:04:37.91\00:04:41.28 Following Zambia's independence, 00:04:41.31\00:04:42.68 there was a major focus to build hospitals 00:04:42.71\00:04:44.75 and improve the healthcare of those in remote rural areas 00:04:44.78\00:04:48.18 through the use of doctors that would fly in. 00:04:48.22\00:04:50.42 The founder of Riverside Farms was one of those doctors. 00:04:50.45\00:04:55.82 Zambia is located in South Central Africa 00:04:55.86\00:04:58.53 and has a population of over 16 million people. 00:04:58.56\00:05:03.13 First contacted by European explorers 00:05:03.16\00:05:05.00 in the late 18th century, 00:05:05.03\00:05:06.37 it soon became a British colony. 00:05:06.40\00:05:08.77 A prominent European visitor came in the 19th century, 00:05:08.80\00:05:12.11 David Livingstone. 00:05:12.14\00:05:14.11 He hoped to end the slave trade in Africa through the three Cs, 00:05:14.14\00:05:17.68 Christianity, commerce, and civilization. 00:05:17.71\00:05:22.28 He was the first European to see the beautiful waterfalls 00:05:22.32\00:05:24.62 on the Zambezi River in 1855. 00:05:24.65\00:05:28.86 He named them Victoria Falls after Queen Victoria, 00:05:28.89\00:05:31.86 saying that "Scenes so lovely must have been gazed 00:05:31.89\00:05:35.50 upon by angels in their flight." 00:05:35.53\00:05:39.67 In 1964, 00:05:39.70\00:05:41.04 Zambia gained its independence from colonial rule. 00:05:41.07\00:05:43.14 And in 1991, it became a democracy. 00:05:43.17\00:05:45.41 Colonization has a great impact 00:05:51.45\00:05:53.31 on the current issues that Zambia is facing. 00:05:53.35\00:05:55.35 In 1895, Frederick Russell Burnham, 00:05:55.38\00:05:57.75 an American scout discovered rich deposits of copper. 00:05:57.79\00:06:01.12 This discovery led the British to force native Zambians 00:06:01.16\00:06:03.69 through heavy taxation to work the mines, 00:06:03.73\00:06:06.23 while Europeans were given the most fertile farmlands. 00:06:06.26\00:06:09.43 This push some Zambians to violence, 00:06:09.46\00:06:11.43 though there was never a large scale revolt. 00:06:11.47\00:06:15.20 Because of the focus on mining, 00:06:15.24\00:06:16.57 Zambia's economy is heavily dependent on copper, 00:06:16.60\00:06:19.27 which became a problem in the mid 70s 00:06:19.31\00:06:21.51 when the value of copper dropped to half. 00:06:21.54\00:06:24.15 This pushed Zambians to diversify their economy, 00:06:24.18\00:06:26.72 mainly focusing on increasing agriculture. 00:06:26.75\00:06:30.22 The Zambian government is promoting agriculture 00:06:30.25\00:06:32.29 through the development of farm blocks 00:06:32.32\00:06:33.66 in all 10 provinces 00:06:33.69\00:06:35.02 for large and medium commercial farming, 00:06:35.06\00:06:37.36 fish farming, and livestock production. 00:06:37.39\00:06:40.36 Agriculture contributes about 19% to GDP, 00:06:40.40\00:06:43.67 and employs three quarters of the population. 00:06:43.70\00:06:46.67 Domestic production is comprised of crops 00:06:46.70\00:06:48.57 such as maize, sorghum, millet, and cassava. 00:06:48.60\00:06:52.07 Well, exports are driven by sugar, soybeans, coffee, 00:06:52.11\00:06:55.61 ground nuts, rice, and cotton, 00:06:55.64\00:06:58.25 as well as horticulture produce. 00:06:58.28\00:07:00.92 The people of Zambia are working hard to improve 00:07:00.95\00:07:03.35 not just their lives, 00:07:03.39\00:07:04.72 but also the lives 00:07:04.75\00:07:06.09 of those around them through farming. 00:07:06.12\00:07:07.79 Her name is Regina, and I have got to know her 00:07:07.82\00:07:11.03 because whenever this piece work at Riverside, 00:07:11.06\00:07:13.66 you see Regina here. 00:07:13.70\00:07:15.43 And she's one of the hardest workers. 00:07:15.46\00:07:17.57 So each department they all want to hire Regina, 00:07:17.60\00:07:21.54 because she puts everything into her work. 00:07:21.57\00:07:24.17 She has nine children 00:07:24.21\00:07:25.97 and five dependent grandchildren on her. 00:07:26.01\00:07:29.14 And the thing that I like about Regina, 00:07:29.18\00:07:32.68 you never see her not smiling. 00:07:32.71\00:07:35.08 And she just takes life as it comes, 00:07:35.12\00:07:37.32 she does the best she can and she goes forward. 00:07:37.35\00:07:42.22 Regina's hard work ethic 00:07:42.26\00:07:43.59 is shared by a majority of Zambians, 00:07:43.63\00:07:46.03 but many factors have kept them from progressing. 00:07:46.06\00:07:48.70 One of those factors is that only a few areas use irrigation 00:07:48.73\00:07:52.03 while the rest rely only on rain, 00:07:52.07\00:07:54.10 which is led to many failed crops due to drought. 00:07:54.14\00:07:57.04 The other issue is that most of the farmers 00:07:57.07\00:07:58.77 are not able to afford farm equipment. 00:07:58.81\00:08:01.14 So they have to do everything by hand. 00:08:01.18\00:08:03.18 This greatly decreases the amount of land 00:08:03.21\00:08:05.21 that they can farm. 00:08:05.25\00:08:06.58 Even though there are limitations, 00:08:06.61\00:08:08.12 Zambia is not lacking usable farmland, 00:08:08.15\00:08:10.75 58% of Zambia is classified as medium to high potential 00:08:10.79\00:08:14.56 for agricultural production. 00:08:14.59\00:08:16.22 However, only 15% of this land is currently under cultivation. 00:08:16.26\00:08:22.23 Well, this is pretty tough, 00:08:22.26\00:08:24.07 but I'm right here in the village near Riverside. 00:08:24.10\00:08:28.60 And this is Regina. 00:08:28.64\00:08:30.37 And this is one of Regina's three fields. 00:08:30.41\00:08:33.17 Now normally, 00:08:33.21\00:08:34.54 she gets 86 of maize from this field. 00:08:34.58\00:08:38.45 And that's what she really lives on. 00:08:38.48\00:08:40.82 That's what she educates the children with. 00:08:40.85\00:08:43.59 But this year, 00:08:43.62\00:08:44.95 she hasn't got one cob of corn from this field. 00:08:44.99\00:08:48.96 So this is going to have a dramatic impact, 00:08:48.99\00:08:51.49 not only on Regina, 00:08:51.53\00:08:52.89 but on her village and across the whole of Zambia. 00:08:52.93\00:08:56.73 Now I have to say we've just visited the village. 00:08:56.77\00:08:59.83 And this is going to be very, very tough on these people. 00:08:59.87\00:09:03.54 So just in one small way, 00:09:03.57\00:09:05.67 the fact that we can help 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.41 sponsor Regina's children bring some relief. 00:09:07.44\00:09:11.28 But I'm really scared of what the future holds 00:09:11.31\00:09:14.12 for families like Regina's in Zambia in the future. 00:09:14.15\00:09:18.62 In Zambia, the people grow maize during the rainy season 00:09:18.65\00:09:23.49 because that is their way to get a little bit ahead 00:09:23.53\00:09:26.90 not only with their food 00:09:26.93\00:09:28.26 but with other needs that they have. 00:09:28.30\00:09:30.53 And since Regina is such a hard worker, 00:09:30.57\00:09:32.70 she put in three fields of maize, worked hard, 00:09:32.73\00:09:36.71 you know, got the soil ready, planted it, weeded it. 00:09:36.74\00:09:40.44 And then the rains came. 00:09:40.48\00:09:42.71 And she usually gets between 80 and 100 bags of maize, 00:09:42.74\00:09:46.98 which keeps them through the year. 00:09:47.02\00:09:49.12 And she told us as we went out to see her field, 00:09:49.15\00:09:52.39 it could make you cry. 00:09:52.42\00:09:54.12 She said I did not get even one cob. 00:09:54.16\00:09:57.09 She says, I don't know what this year will bring. 00:09:57.13\00:09:59.93 You've just heard the urgent need of this lady. 00:09:59.96\00:10:02.23 And what you don't know is that she has nine children 00:10:02.26\00:10:05.87 and five grandchildren that she is raising. 00:10:05.90\00:10:09.60 So you can see that this failure of a crop 00:10:09.64\00:10:14.14 is going to have a dramatic impact 00:10:14.18\00:10:16.14 on families like these. 00:10:16.18\00:10:18.01 This is a lady that really works hard. 00:10:18.05\00:10:20.52 She goes to Riverside and gets work when she can. 00:10:20.55\00:10:23.72 And normally, when there's a crop, 00:10:23.75\00:10:25.49 she does three fields on her own. 00:10:25.52\00:10:28.22 So this shows the commitment that this lady has bringing up 00:10:28.26\00:10:32.86 nine children and five grandchildren. 00:10:32.89\00:10:37.90 It is not just survival that keeps Regina going, 00:10:37.93\00:10:40.17 it is also the desire to give her children 00:10:40.20\00:10:41.94 and grandchildren an Adventist education. 00:10:41.97\00:10:45.04 Religiously, Zambia is almost entirely a Christian nation, 00:10:45.07\00:10:48.01 with 75% being Protestant and 20% Catholic. 00:10:48.04\00:10:51.61 The Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:10:51.65\00:10:52.98 has a major presence in Zambia 00:10:53.01\00:10:54.58 with one out of every 18 Zambians 00:10:54.62\00:10:56.28 being an Adventist. 00:10:56.32\00:10:57.65 This is the highest of any country in the world. 00:10:57.69\00:11:00.52 To put that in perspective, 00:11:00.56\00:11:01.89 the United States and Zambia 00:11:01.92\00:11:03.26 have nearly the same amount of Adventist members. 00:11:03.29\00:11:06.29 One of the first Adventist missionaries 00:11:06.33\00:11:07.96 to Zambia was WH Anderson, 00:11:08.00\00:11:10.27 who began his work in the late 1800s. 00:11:10.30\00:11:12.70 At one point, 00:11:12.73\00:11:14.07 his family and two other families 00:11:14.10\00:11:15.44 were living out of an ox-wagon for five months. 00:11:15.47\00:11:18.67 In spite of their hardships, 00:11:18.71\00:11:20.04 they continue to spread the gospel and converted many. 00:11:20.08\00:11:23.81 A quote from Anderson shows why they were so successful 00:11:23.85\00:11:26.75 in spreading the gospel. 00:11:26.78\00:11:28.62 "When a man goes to the mission field, 00:11:28.65\00:11:30.59 he must have love for the people 00:11:30.62\00:11:32.49 if he is to win them. 00:11:32.52\00:11:34.02 If he does not have love, he might as well not go. 00:11:34.06\00:11:36.93 Love is the basis of all missionary work." 00:11:36.96\00:11:41.50 In spite of large Adventist presence here, 00:11:41.53\00:11:43.47 there are hardly any Adventist schools 00:11:43.50\00:11:45.50 with only three secondary schools 00:11:45.53\00:11:46.90 and one university. 00:11:46.94\00:11:48.60 The United States has approximately 00:11:48.64\00:11:49.97 158 secondary schools 00:11:50.01\00:11:51.77 and 14 colleges and universities. 00:11:51.81\00:11:54.68 More Adventist schools in Zambia are needed 00:11:54.71\00:11:56.71 not just to help with their immediate needs, 00:11:56.75\00:11:58.71 but also the spiritual needs as well. 00:11:58.75\00:12:00.88 Adventist schools are an opportunity 00:12:00.92\00:12:02.92 to reach the children of the community 00:12:02.95\00:12:04.95 who can then reach their parents. 00:12:04.99\00:12:06.89 This is why Child Impact is so important 00:12:06.92\00:12:08.76 because it provides children with the skills for life, 00:12:08.79\00:12:11.76 but also a relationship with Jesus. 00:12:11.79\00:12:14.20 Wow! 00:12:17.10\00:12:18.43 I'm just here with Mike the cameraman. 00:12:18.47\00:12:20.14 And we're going to go back to the village 00:12:20.17\00:12:21.97 and then back to Riverside. 00:12:22.00\00:12:24.24 And this has been pretty tough, pretty tough. 00:12:24.27\00:12:28.04 I mean, I'm going back to my air conditioned room, 00:12:28.08\00:12:30.85 and the cafeteria is going to feed me a meal. 00:12:30.88\00:12:33.88 And these people here haven't got any food. 00:12:33.92\00:12:36.48 And that's reality. 00:12:36.52\00:12:38.75 And you really have to come here to feel it. 00:12:38.79\00:12:42.26 And the scary part is it's on such a huge scale. 00:12:42.29\00:12:47.46 But I'm just so excited. 00:12:47.50\00:12:48.83 We can do some little things to help these families. 00:12:48.86\00:12:51.97 And maybe we're gonna have to find a way of helping them 00:12:52.00\00:12:54.37 with food. 00:12:54.40\00:12:55.74 We're expanding our sponsorship program 00:13:13.19\00:13:15.72 to Zambia. 00:13:15.76\00:13:17.09 And we're very excited to be partnering 00:13:17.13\00:13:19.53 with Riverside Farms 00:13:19.56\00:13:21.40 who are well-known Adventist ministry. 00:13:21.43\00:13:24.30 They are opening a brand new primary school, 00:13:24.33\00:13:27.00 and we're going to be sponsoring 00:13:27.04\00:13:28.50 very needy children to help them 00:13:28.54\00:13:31.24 to come to an Adventist mission school. 00:13:31.27\00:13:33.78 We're really excited about it. 00:13:33.81\00:13:35.88 And you can either sponsor a child, 00:13:35.91\00:13:38.15 or if you don't want that monthly commitment, 00:13:38.18\00:13:40.65 you can make a contribution to our unsponsored child fund. 00:13:40.68\00:13:45.05 This is an exciting time for us and our supporters. 00:13:45.09\00:13:48.62 And I just hope that you'll support 00:13:48.66\00:13:50.76 our new outreach 00:13:50.79\00:13:52.16 and our new education program in Zambia. 00:13:52.19\00:13:55.06
