Child Impact International is an organization giving hope, 00:00:07.70\00:00:11.54 previously called Asian Aid. 00:00:11.57\00:00:13.54 Child Impact International is an organization fostering 00:00:13.58\00:00:16.98 permanent positive change 00:00:17.01\00:00:18.55 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:18.58\00:00:20.62 and their communities. 00:00:20.65\00:00:22.18 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:22.22\00:00:24.79 in the lives of children and those who are in need, 00:00:24.82\00:00:27.66 serving communities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, 00:00:27.69\00:00:31.63 Myanmar, and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:31.66\00:00:35.06 For the last 50 years, 00:00:35.10\00:00:36.60 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people, 00:00:36.63\00:00:39.53 and their investment has proven infinite returns, 00:00:39.57\00:00:42.50 driven by the dedication to helping those 00:00:42.54\00:00:44.87 who have the least. 00:00:44.91\00:00:46.24 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:46.27\00:00:48.11 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:48.14\00:00:50.21 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:50.25\00:00:52.71 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.75\00:00:54.88 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:54.92\00:00:58.02 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:00:58.05\00:01:00.89 and the blind children 00:01:00.92\00:01:02.26 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:01:02.29\00:01:05.06 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:05.09\00:01:08.90 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:08.93\00:01:12.27 giving hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:01:12.30\00:01:15.00 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:15.04\00:01:16.94 Zambia is an amazing country with a tropical climate 00:01:25.75\00:01:28.88 having high plateaus, some hills, mountains, 00:01:28.92\00:01:32.05 and river valleys with the South being semi-arid. 00:01:32.09\00:01:35.29 It's a truly beautiful place 00:01:35.32\00:01:37.43 with wildlife that was unheard of 00:01:37.46\00:01:39.26 back when it was first contacted 00:01:39.29\00:01:40.63 by European explorers in the late 18th century. 00:01:40.66\00:01:44.57 Today, it is growing rapidly, 00:01:44.60\00:01:46.30 but the rural areas are struggling. 00:01:46.33\00:01:48.70 We went to Zambia and discovered a growing desire 00:01:48.74\00:01:51.27 to educate the young people 00:01:51.31\00:01:52.71 to better their country's economy. 00:01:52.74\00:01:54.74 Riverside could be a place that Child Impact can use 00:01:54.78\00:01:57.58 to make a difference 00:01:57.61\00:01:58.95 in the lives of Zambia's children. 00:01:58.98\00:02:01.02 I've now been the Chief Executive Officer 00:02:01.05\00:02:03.52 of Child Impact International for 10 years. 00:02:03.55\00:02:06.69 And today is a really exciting day 00:02:06.72\00:02:09.29 because here I am standing under a tree in Zambia, Africa. 00:02:09.32\00:02:13.56 We're expanding our sponsorship program to Zambia. 00:02:13.60\00:02:17.23 And we're very excited to be partnering 00:02:17.27\00:02:19.87 with Riverside Farms 00:02:19.90\00:02:21.74 for a well-known Adventist ministry. 00:02:21.77\00:02:24.57 They're opening a brand new primary school, 00:02:24.61\00:02:27.31 and we're going to be sponsoring very needy children 00:02:27.34\00:02:30.75 to help them to come 00:02:30.78\00:02:32.25 to an Adventists mission school. 00:02:32.28\00:02:34.52 As a child, growing up in Zambia, more than likely, 00:02:40.09\00:02:42.22 you would be living far below the poverty line. 00:02:42.26\00:02:44.69 Your parents are probably either copper miners 00:02:44.73\00:02:46.90 or farmers and what determines if you can go to school 00:02:46.93\00:02:49.33 is the current price of copper or the weather. 00:02:49.36\00:02:51.70 If the crops fail, your family goes hungry, 00:02:51.73\00:02:54.50 and you must focus on surviving, 00:02:54.54\00:02:56.40 all hopes of an education are gone. 00:02:56.44\00:02:58.81 There are so many children here that cannot go to school. 00:02:58.84\00:03:03.18 The reason they can't go to school is, 00:03:03.21\00:03:05.25 even if the tuition is not very high, 00:03:05.28\00:03:08.65 the people can't afford it if they have two, 00:03:08.68\00:03:10.69 three, four children. 00:03:10.72\00:03:12.05 Zambia is one of the most stable countries in Africa, 00:03:12.09\00:03:14.36 their mission and desire being to improve their economy 00:03:14.39\00:03:17.36 which steadily rose 7% in just a decade. 00:03:17.39\00:03:21.80 This economic growth 00:03:21.83\00:03:23.16 hasn't helped their poverty line however, 00:03:23.20\00:03:25.03 the cities are growing well, 00:03:25.07\00:03:26.40 but the rural areas are stagnant. 00:03:26.43\00:03:29.87 They have few economic prospects. 00:03:29.90\00:03:31.67 And with that, it limits the ability for other works 00:03:31.71\00:03:34.11 to exist when the skills needed are too difficult to acquire. 00:03:34.14\00:03:39.21 Such skills require proper education, 00:03:39.25\00:03:41.45 a resource that Zambia is desperately lacking. 00:03:41.48\00:03:44.99 Zambia is very isolated 00:03:45.02\00:03:46.62 and more so in the underdeveloped areas 00:03:46.65\00:03:48.42 of the country. 00:03:48.46\00:03:49.79 The people are struggling to make a living 00:03:49.82\00:03:51.19 as well as having the needed skills 00:03:51.23\00:03:52.79 to break free from their poverty. 00:03:52.83\00:03:54.53 Zambia is declining economy causes about 60% of Zambia 00:03:56.30\00:03:59.80 and still live under the nation's poverty line 00:03:59.83\00:04:03.00 with rural poverty standing at almost 78%. 00:04:03.04\00:04:06.11 You might be asking, 00:04:07.34\00:04:08.68 "Why is Child Impact expanding into Zambia?" 00:04:08.71\00:04:12.35 Well, it's very simple. 00:04:12.38\00:04:13.72 We will have a partner 00:04:13.75\00:04:15.28 on the ground running the school 00:04:15.32\00:04:17.29 that is very, very reliable and is mission-focused. 00:04:17.32\00:04:21.86 We believe that all children are precious to God. 00:04:21.89\00:04:24.63 Our goal is to give hope 00:04:24.66\00:04:26.26 by fostering permanent positive change 00:04:26.29\00:04:28.36 in the lives of the disadvantaged children 00:04:28.40\00:04:30.57 of Zambia. 00:04:30.60\00:04:31.93 Central to our mission is building the infrastructure 00:04:31.97\00:04:34.57 of the local school, 00:04:34.60\00:04:35.94 empowering it to meet the needs 00:04:35.97\00:04:37.61 of its own community. 00:04:37.64\00:04:39.31 We see a need in Zambia that can be met 00:04:39.34\00:04:41.38 with the help of our sponsors. 00:04:41.41\00:04:43.04 We know that education is necessary 00:04:43.08\00:04:45.15 for the future of any community 00:04:45.18\00:04:46.68 to grow and improve their conditions. 00:04:46.72\00:04:48.85 Zambia desperately needs our help. 00:04:48.88\00:04:51.22 Riverside Farm is well-known in the community 00:04:51.25\00:04:55.59 and will be able to do a great job 00:04:55.62\00:04:57.96 not only in running the school 00:04:57.99\00:04:59.96 but administering the sponsorship program. 00:05:00.00\00:05:03.30 We also know that no funds would be wasted 00:05:03.33\00:05:06.67 and that there will be genuinely 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.64 poor children that will be helped. 00:05:08.67\00:05:10.97 Another challenge is that even existing school 00:05:14.84\00:05:17.21 suffer from a lack of scholastic materials. 00:05:17.25\00:05:20.32 The lack of scholastic materials 00:05:20.35\00:05:22.08 is something few in the US can imagine. 00:05:22.12\00:05:24.92 A class of 50 pupils 00:05:24.95\00:05:26.45 often only have enough books for 10. 00:05:26.49\00:05:29.69 Drawing charts become impossible 00:05:29.72\00:05:31.73 without pencil and paper. 00:05:31.76\00:05:33.56 It takes everything you have, dipping into your own pocket, 00:05:33.60\00:05:36.33 knowing your meager income you receive 00:05:36.36\00:05:38.27 at the end of the month. 00:05:38.30\00:05:39.63 And even then, it's never enough, 00:05:39.67\00:05:41.30 especially since most rural families 00:05:41.34\00:05:43.20 have to spend 60% of their money on food. 00:05:43.24\00:05:46.07 But there is a glimmer of hope. 00:05:46.11\00:05:49.61 My name is Craig Harding. 00:05:49.64\00:05:50.98 I'm the Executive Director here at Riverside Farm Institute. 00:05:51.01\00:05:53.95 And I manage the programs we do here and run the farm. 00:05:53.98\00:05:57.12 Well, I'm Pauline Knowles, 00:05:57.15\00:05:58.49 and we're at Riverside Farm in Zambia, Africa. 00:05:58.52\00:06:02.09 The school program here has been really exciting 00:06:02.12\00:06:04.33 for the primary education program. 00:06:04.36\00:06:05.83 About 20 years ago, 00:06:05.86\00:06:07.83 the school buildings that are there were built, 00:06:07.86\00:06:11.40 and we've been running the school there since. 00:06:11.43\00:06:14.74 In the district that we're in 00:06:14.77\00:06:16.77 and how we get the highest success grade rate 00:06:16.81\00:06:20.08 for the students that are graduating 00:06:20.11\00:06:21.94 on to go to secondary school, which is exciting for us. 00:06:21.98\00:06:24.78 Zambia's government is struggling 00:06:24.81\00:06:26.41 to meet the budget needs 00:06:26.45\00:06:27.78 of the growing population when it comes to education. 00:06:27.82\00:06:30.32 Schools in rural areas 00:06:30.35\00:06:31.75 are suffering with a lack of classrooms. 00:06:31.79\00:06:34.06 The main problem is students continuing their education 00:06:34.09\00:06:36.99 past eighth grade. 00:06:37.03\00:06:38.36 Since fees are due after grade seven, 00:06:38.39\00:06:40.06 they tend to stop their education early, 00:06:40.10\00:06:42.10 so schools can't afford to add more classrooms. 00:06:42.13\00:06:44.63 If there are no fees in certain schools, 00:06:44.67\00:06:46.30 the children have to walk really far 00:06:46.33\00:06:48.14 in order to go to schools. 00:06:48.17\00:06:51.57 The families cannot even afford the basics like uniform, 00:06:51.61\00:06:54.11 books, and pencils. 00:06:54.14\00:06:55.61 It's hard to tell how many are and/or not going to school. 00:06:55.64\00:06:59.01 We have found a major need in establishing schools 00:06:59.05\00:07:01.75 for the children in this country. 00:07:01.78\00:07:03.28 We are going to focus on the rural area, 00:07:03.32\00:07:05.35 south of the capital to help this deprived region. 00:07:05.39\00:07:09.02 Attaining enough funding to help these children 00:07:09.06\00:07:10.93 is a vital part of the mission that still has to be done. 00:07:10.96\00:07:15.06 Funding will go to help these children attend school, 00:07:15.10\00:07:17.53 purchase academic materials, 00:07:17.57\00:07:19.33 and better prepare them for the future. 00:07:19.37\00:07:22.50 Zambia is struggling, but there is hope 00:07:22.54\00:07:24.57 through educating the next generation. 00:07:24.61\00:07:26.71 We run a primary school. 00:07:26.74\00:07:28.64 We also do an adult training program 00:07:28.68\00:07:30.68 for people coming out of the village, 00:07:30.71\00:07:32.91 doing tailoring, agriculture, and different programs. 00:07:32.95\00:07:36.75 We also run a wellness center, 00:07:36.79\00:07:38.79 helping people with different wellness 00:07:38.82\00:07:40.36 and health issues. 00:07:40.39\00:07:42.06 But we felt the pressure of aging school buildings, 00:07:42.09\00:07:45.43 and so we're so excited 00:07:45.46\00:07:46.96 to be building a one-day school campus 00:07:47.00\00:07:50.20 and building a whole set of new buildings 00:07:50.23\00:07:52.77 and bringing the kids there. 00:07:52.80\00:07:54.57 And while we're here, it's still under construction, 00:07:54.60\00:07:57.61 but the school really is starting to look good. 00:07:57.64\00:08:00.31 These classrooms, and administration office, 00:08:00.34\00:08:03.91 and then there's a couple of staff houses. 00:08:03.95\00:08:06.38 And directly over there will be just a new play area, 00:08:06.41\00:08:10.12 playground, where the children 00:08:10.15\00:08:11.95 will be able to have a great time. 00:08:11.99\00:08:13.82 There's also lovely shade from the existing 00:08:13.86\00:08:16.83 and established trees. 00:08:16.86\00:08:18.69 We decided to build a new school 00:08:18.73\00:08:20.96 because not only do we want to expand 00:08:21.00\00:08:23.47 but it's right in the middle of campus. 00:08:23.50\00:08:25.73 And with all these children there, 00:08:25.77\00:08:27.27 it can be a little distracting at times. 00:08:27.30\00:08:29.94 And so now they have a nice setting out in the woods 00:08:29.97\00:08:34.64 where there's trees and it's out in nature. 00:08:34.68\00:08:38.15 And we're just excited about having a different location 00:08:38.18\00:08:41.05 and to add more students to the school. 00:08:41.08\00:08:43.89 Not only will it allow us to continue to better 00:08:43.92\00:08:46.39 serve the kids who are here 00:08:46.42\00:08:48.02 but we'll be able to expand it to take more kids, 00:08:48.06\00:08:50.53 including kids who are at risk, just from a lack of money. 00:08:50.56\00:08:54.30 When you don't have money for food, 00:08:54.33\00:08:55.90 your parents certainly don't have money 00:08:55.93\00:08:57.40 to put you in school, 00:08:57.43\00:08:58.77 and so it becomes a problem of growing levels of ignorance 00:08:58.80\00:09:02.50 and lack of skills 00:09:02.54\00:09:05.74 to then be able to feed themselves 00:09:05.77\00:09:07.14 for future generations. 00:09:07.18\00:09:08.61 Now the school looks a little remote 00:09:08.64\00:09:10.61 when I first drove in, 00:09:10.65\00:09:12.08 but in fact, it's not far from the local villages 00:09:12.11\00:09:15.32 where the sponsored children can come from. 00:09:15.35\00:09:18.05 This is a great facility. 00:09:18.09\00:09:19.79 It's going to be well-managed, 00:09:19.82\00:09:21.82 and it's a great opportunity for child sponsorship. 00:09:21.86\00:09:25.49 Riverside Farm is a public benefit organization here 00:09:34.77\00:09:37.67 in Zambia. 00:09:37.71\00:09:39.04 We do a number of different projects, 00:09:39.07\00:09:40.78 including the farm that helps to promote the program. 00:09:40.81\00:09:44.91 We run a primary school. 00:09:44.95\00:09:46.82 We also do an adult training program 00:09:46.85\00:09:49.02 for people coming out of the village, 00:09:49.05\00:09:51.09 doing tailoring, agriculture and different programs. 00:09:51.12\00:09:54.96 We also run a wellness center, 00:09:54.99\00:09:56.99 helping people with different wellness 00:09:57.03\00:09:58.53 and health issues and we also run a farm program. 00:09:58.56\00:10:03.93 Well, we've been here for like 30 years now. 00:10:03.97\00:10:07.77 And how we got here was 00:10:07.80\00:10:09.80 when my husband and I got married, 00:10:09.84\00:10:11.77 we thought, "Well, if we just have a house of our own, 00:10:11.81\00:10:17.01 we'll be happy." 00:10:17.05\00:10:18.38 And then after we had a house, 00:10:18.41\00:10:19.75 "Well, if we just had our children." 00:10:19.78\00:10:21.25 Now we had two boys. 00:10:21.28\00:10:22.78 And then after that, we started thinking, 00:10:22.82\00:10:24.89 "But there's got to be more to life than this." 00:10:24.92\00:10:27.22 And so we just started praying about it. 00:10:27.26\00:10:29.42 And we ended up working 00:10:29.46\00:10:30.83 in a self-supporting institution in the States 00:10:30.86\00:10:33.53 and never dreamed 00:10:33.56\00:10:34.90 that we'd be asked to come to Africa. 00:10:34.93\00:10:36.90 But here we are. 00:10:36.93\00:10:40.04 The life of a missionary is very different 00:10:40.07\00:10:42.20 and often challenging, 00:10:42.24\00:10:43.57 but the rewards make it all worthwhile. 00:10:43.61\00:10:45.84 Riverside Farm works tirelessly 00:10:45.87\00:10:47.91 to be the hands and feet of Jesus, 00:10:47.94\00:10:50.21 reaching out to the villages around them 00:10:50.25\00:10:52.55 to provide for their temporal and eternal needs. 00:10:52.58\00:10:55.82 The farm offers locals not only work 00:10:55.85\00:10:58.29 but valuable training in modern agricultural methods, 00:10:58.32\00:11:01.96 while the school gives their children 00:11:01.99\00:11:04.09 the opportunity to gain valuable skills 00:11:04.13\00:11:06.19 to not only improve their lives 00:11:06.23\00:11:07.80 but also the lives of those in their communities. 00:11:07.83\00:11:10.87 God is blessing their efforts. 00:11:10.90\00:11:12.30 And the partnership with Child Impact 00:11:12.33\00:11:14.20 opens great possibilities for the future. 00:11:14.24\00:11:17.77 On opening day, the school will have about 100 children, 00:11:17.81\00:11:21.88 and then it will be able to grow 00:11:21.91\00:11:23.55 to somewhere around 250 children 00:11:23.58\00:11:26.25 over the next year or two. 00:11:26.28\00:11:28.55 We're excited about the Child Impact involvement 00:11:28.58\00:11:30.92 in the school because there's a number of kids 00:11:30.95\00:11:33.86 who would otherwise have no educational opportunity 00:11:33.89\00:11:37.63 because their parents are smallholder farmers. 00:11:37.66\00:11:40.03 And any time there's a crop failure, 00:11:40.06\00:11:42.36 they have no food, 00:11:42.40\00:11:43.90 their families begin cutting trees, 00:11:43.93\00:11:45.77 burning charcoal, doing things just to survive 00:11:45.80\00:11:48.34 with no income for them to have an education. 00:11:48.37\00:11:51.81 And then on years when there is rain, 00:11:51.84\00:11:54.48 they're still going hungry oftentimes 00:11:54.51\00:11:57.15 coming up into the periods where there's crop harvest. 00:11:57.18\00:12:01.82 So this is an opportunity for them 00:12:01.85\00:12:03.69 to be able to better their lives 00:12:03.72\00:12:05.35 so that when their children come, 00:12:05.39\00:12:06.99 they're able to have a life that's not so dependent 00:12:07.02\00:12:09.69 on the unpredictability of rain in this arid region. 00:12:09.72\00:12:13.13 They can't afford to send them and they just stay home. 00:12:13.16\00:12:15.86 And so we are really excited that Child Impact has come, 00:12:15.90\00:12:20.90 and they're going to help 00:12:20.94\00:12:22.27 some of these unfortunate children 00:12:22.30\00:12:23.84 be able to attend school. 00:12:23.87\00:12:25.61 Starting out, it would house around 150 students 00:12:25.64\00:12:28.88 but, hopefully, double and keep increasing 00:12:28.91\00:12:31.11 since there's such a high demand. 00:12:31.15\00:12:33.42 Because of this, Child Impact saw the need to go to Zambia, 00:12:33.45\00:12:36.58 the lack of money makes this new school 00:12:36.62\00:12:38.95 underutilized because families can't afford 00:12:38.99\00:12:41.36 to take their students to school. 00:12:41.39\00:12:43.22 Helping with the students' financial needs will guarantee 00:12:43.26\00:12:46.09 they have materials so they can focus on learning. 00:12:46.13\00:12:48.50 This will also alleviate the financial burdens 00:12:48.53\00:12:50.77 that families have, 00:12:50.80\00:12:52.13 which will allow them to buy food 00:12:52.17\00:12:53.54 and care for the basic needs of their family. 00:12:53.57\00:12:56.60 But most importantly, this will provide the children 00:12:56.64\00:12:59.51 with a Christian Adventist education, 00:12:59.54\00:13:02.11 an education that will teach them Bible truths, 00:13:02.14\00:13:04.21 that will help further spread the gospel to this nation 00:13:04.25\00:13:06.98 that is poised to receive the truth. 00:13:07.02\00:13:08.98 Well, it's an exciting day because for the first time 00:13:09.02\00:13:12.02 I'm sitting in a classroom in Africa, here in Zambia. 00:13:12.05\00:13:15.89 And we're at the Riverside Farm School. 00:13:15.92\00:13:18.59 And shortly, they'll be moving into a new school, 00:13:18.63\00:13:21.86 where we'll have over 50 sponsored children. 00:13:21.90\00:13:24.80 And I'm here with Daniel 00:13:24.83\00:13:26.50 and there will be many children like him 00:13:26.53\00:13:28.67 that will be able to enjoy sponsorship. 00:13:28.70\00:13:31.41 You can sponsor a child or you could help 00:13:31.44\00:13:34.68 by just giving a contribution to our unsponsored child fund. 00:13:34.71\00:13:39.45 This is a very exciting time for Child Impact 00:13:39.48\00:13:42.58 because we're really going to be impacting 00:13:42.62\00:13:44.95 on the real needy around Riverside Farms. 00:13:44.99\00:13:48.59 Your support will make a real difference, 00:13:48.62\00:13:51.19 either with sponsorship 00:13:51.23\00:13:52.69 or contributing to the unsponsored child fund. 00:13:52.73\00:13:55.63
