Child Impact International is an organization giving hope, 00:00:07.34\00:00:11.34 previously called Asian Aid. 00:00:11.37\00:00:13.27 Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:13.31\00:00:15.98 fostering permanent positive change 00:00:16.01\00:00:18.21 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:18.25\00:00:20.32 and their communities. 00:00:20.35\00:00:21.92 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:21.95\00:00:24.45 in the lives of children and those who are in need. 00:00:24.49\00:00:27.36 Serving communities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, 00:00:27.39\00:00:31.39 Myanmar, and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:31.43\00:00:34.63 For the last 50 years, 00:00:34.66\00:00:36.26 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people 00:00:36.30\00:00:39.23 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:00:39.27\00:00:42.10 Driven by the dedication 00:00:42.14\00:00:43.47 to helping those who have the least, 00:00:43.51\00:00:45.67 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:45.71\00:00:47.68 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:47.71\00:00:49.91 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:49.94\00:00:52.41 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.45\00:00:54.52 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:54.55\00:00:57.65 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:00:57.69\00:01:00.66 and the blind children, 00:01:00.69\00:01:02.02 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:01:02.06\00:01:04.76 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:04.79\00:01:08.70 giving hope to children, giving hope to community, 00:01:08.73\00:01:12.03 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:12.07\00:01:14.70 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:14.74\00:01:16.50 Situated amidst the lush green paddy fields of Bobbili, 00:01:31.82\00:01:35.22 in Andhra Pradesh, India 00:01:35.26\00:01:36.76 is an institution that is home 00:01:36.79\00:01:38.39 to some of the most disadvantaged children 00:01:38.43\00:01:40.50 in the society. 00:01:40.53\00:01:41.86 This is the Asian Aid School for the Blind. 00:01:41.90\00:01:45.80 In a world where blindness is considered a curse 00:01:45.83\00:01:48.60 and blind children are abandoned, 00:01:48.64\00:01:50.54 this campus is a refuge 00:01:50.57\00:01:52.11 for children seeking care and comfort. 00:01:52.14\00:01:56.18 The Asian Aid School for the Blind 00:01:56.21\00:01:58.18 was established here mainly 00:01:58.21\00:01:59.55 by the efforts of Asian Aid co-founder 00:01:59.58\00:02:01.78 Helen Eager. 00:02:01.82\00:02:03.15 The Asian Aid School for the Blind 00:02:03.18\00:02:04.69 is very important to me 00:02:04.72\00:02:06.05 because actually I did find that we were supporting 00:02:06.09\00:02:10.63 a few blind children up in Jharkhand 00:02:10.66\00:02:14.00 and they were being supported by someone in the US 00:02:14.03\00:02:16.80 and I thought, oh, this is so wonderful, 00:02:16.83\00:02:18.30 I'm so glad our church is doing something for the blind. 00:02:18.33\00:02:21.34 And then I went home to Australia 00:02:21.37\00:02:23.27 and then I got a letter just few weeks later 00:02:23.30\00:02:26.91 saying this person in US is no longer supporting 00:02:26.94\00:02:29.94 these children so we sent them all home. 00:02:29.98\00:02:31.55 So that was basically the start of our blind program. 00:02:31.58\00:02:36.72 I said, well, bring them all back 00:02:36.75\00:02:38.19 and we supported them there in Jharkhand, 00:02:38.22\00:02:40.32 and then we started the blind school 00:02:40.36\00:02:43.69 actually in Andhra Pradesh. 00:02:43.73\00:02:45.93 Started with just a few children 00:02:45.96\00:02:47.83 at its new location in Bobbili, 00:02:47.86\00:02:49.80 the number of children at the school 00:02:49.83\00:02:51.47 steadily increased each passing year. 00:02:51.50\00:02:54.24 There are various circumstances that have contributed 00:02:54.27\00:02:56.64 to these children losing their sight. 00:02:56.67\00:02:58.57 Some of them are victims of accidents, 00:02:58.61\00:03:00.68 some due to vitamin deficiency 00:03:00.71\00:03:02.58 factored by lack of nutritious food, 00:03:02.61\00:03:04.71 but most of them were born blind. 00:03:04.75\00:03:06.95 The main reason children are born blind 00:03:06.98\00:03:08.92 in these parts of Andhra Pradesh 00:03:08.95\00:03:10.75 is due to socioeconomic practice 00:03:10.79\00:03:12.92 that is prevalent in these cultures. 00:03:12.95\00:03:15.89 We have found that with the children 00:03:15.92\00:03:18.19 that we support in the blind school 00:03:18.23\00:03:20.50 that nearly all of them, 00:03:20.53\00:03:21.86 the parents are blood relatives. 00:03:21.90\00:03:23.67 Now, the reason they do 00:03:23.70\00:03:25.03 this is basically poverty as well. 00:03:25.07\00:03:27.34 Because if there is, you know, 00:03:27.37\00:03:29.27 a small piece of land 00:03:29.30\00:03:30.87 they don't want that piece of land 00:03:30.91\00:03:32.94 to leave the family kind of thing. 00:03:32.97\00:03:35.61 And so they will often... 00:03:35.64\00:03:38.08 It's often uncles marrying their nieces. 00:03:38.11\00:03:41.18 And, of course, 00:03:41.22\00:03:42.58 if your daughter marries a relative, 00:03:42.62\00:03:46.25 then you don't have to pay a dowry. 00:03:46.29\00:03:49.12 While rural traditions and socioeconomic difficulties 00:03:49.16\00:03:51.99 dictate life in rural India, their children pay the price. 00:03:52.03\00:03:56.13 Cultural issues are hard to understand. 00:03:56.16\00:03:58.63 It may even seem bizarre and cruel at times. 00:03:58.67\00:04:01.50 It's difficult to change people's perceptions 00:04:01.54\00:04:03.81 that are rooted deep. 00:04:03.84\00:04:05.17 But for all its traditions and practices, 00:04:05.21\00:04:07.38 the fact remains that all parents love their children 00:04:07.41\00:04:10.85 and want the best for them. 00:04:10.88\00:04:12.61 It's very difficult for you as a caring parent 00:04:12.65\00:04:15.98 to find a way of giving your child a better life. 00:04:16.02\00:04:20.32 So not only are we making a difference for the child, 00:04:20.36\00:04:25.49 we are actually giving the parents some hope, 00:04:25.53\00:04:29.46 they all care for their child. 00:04:29.50\00:04:31.73 And they overcome with guilt and community pressure 00:04:31.77\00:04:37.67 because their child is blind. 00:04:37.71\00:04:39.71 So it helps overcome all these issues 00:04:39.74\00:04:43.71 in giving the child a chance, 00:04:43.75\00:04:45.81 but giving the parents hope that they simply 00:04:45.85\00:04:49.98 have no other way of getting. 00:04:50.02\00:04:51.89 Jagan is a ninth grade student at the school. 00:04:55.12\00:04:57.66 He comes from a small village, 00:04:57.69\00:04:59.13 about an hour's drive from the school. 00:04:59.16\00:05:01.10 Jagan's parents are dhobis, a washermen community. 00:05:13.74\00:05:17.11 In a class divided world, 00:05:17.15\00:05:18.75 they are at the bottom of the social structure 00:05:18.78\00:05:20.92 and are pushed to the edge of the village. 00:05:20.95\00:05:22.92 When my first son was born, I was happy. 00:05:27.36\00:05:30.99 My second son was born, and I was very happy. 00:05:31.03\00:05:34.63 But when my third child was born, 00:05:34.66\00:05:37.17 my wife and I became very depressed. 00:05:37.20\00:05:41.94 As if living at the edge of the village 00:05:41.97\00:05:43.67 wasn't bad enough, 00:05:43.71\00:05:45.04 their hardship was compounded 00:05:45.07\00:05:46.51 when their third child Jagan was born blind. 00:05:46.54\00:05:51.48 I am a dhobi, I go to the pond in the morning 00:05:51.51\00:05:54.68 and come back in the evening. 00:05:54.72\00:05:56.62 He was left alone at home. 00:05:56.65\00:05:58.55 When he goes into the street, other children made fun of him. 00:05:58.59\00:06:02.29 This is how he spent his childhood here. 00:06:02.32\00:06:04.96 He is blind, God made him that way, what can we do? 00:06:04.99\00:06:08.56 In rural villages where being handicapped 00:06:08.60\00:06:10.93 is considered a curse, 00:06:10.97\00:06:12.53 blind children face an uncertain future. 00:06:12.57\00:06:15.30 This is where Asian Aid School for the Blind in Bobbili 00:06:15.34\00:06:18.34 serves as a refuge for children born blind. 00:06:18.37\00:06:21.54 These children have very special needs. 00:06:21.58\00:06:25.65 Their needs are even greater than people who have, 00:06:25.68\00:06:28.98 who do not have sight in the western system, 00:06:29.02\00:06:31.45 in a first world country. 00:06:31.49\00:06:33.12 Because they are ostracized, their families are ostracized. 00:06:33.15\00:06:36.32 So creating this environment, 00:06:36.36\00:06:37.96 their focus is on them gives them an education 00:06:37.99\00:06:42.06 and gives them an opportunity to live a normal life. 00:06:42.10\00:06:45.00 It's so transformational, not just now for the child 00:06:45.03\00:06:47.90 but the parents, 00:06:47.94\00:06:49.27 because now they don't have the same stigma. 00:06:49.30\00:06:51.37 Their children can get on and live a productive life 00:06:51.41\00:06:54.78 and contribute to society, a huge difference. 00:06:54.81\00:06:59.98 This environment that gave them an opportunity 00:07:00.02\00:07:02.15 to live a normal life is indeed transformational. 00:07:02.18\00:07:05.95 With the help of a local school teacher, 00:07:05.99\00:07:07.99 Jagan was brought to the school for the blind in Bobbili 00:07:08.02\00:07:11.06 far away from the struggles of his parents 00:07:11.09\00:07:13.36 and his community. 00:07:13.40\00:07:16.36 I'm so happy he is studying there at the school. 00:07:16.40\00:07:19.03 When he gets a good education, he will get a good job. 00:07:19.07\00:07:22.10 I'm really happy about that. 00:07:22.14\00:07:23.81 Now, he can become 00:07:23.84\00:07:25.17 whatever he wishes to be in life. 00:07:25.21\00:07:27.94 The appreciation from these parents 00:07:27.98\00:07:31.25 sometimes is just overpowering 00:07:31.28\00:07:33.98 because they are so proud 00:07:34.02\00:07:36.02 that their child can go to the school 00:07:36.05\00:07:38.69 and they are so proud that when their child comes home, 00:07:38.72\00:07:41.89 they can see a dramatic difference. 00:07:41.92\00:07:44.39 Okay, read that first adding. 00:07:44.43\00:07:46.63 First adding, sir. Twenty four thousand. 00:07:46.66\00:07:48.90 Child Impact International 00:07:48.93\00:07:50.40 sponsors the majority of children living 00:07:50.43\00:07:52.60 and studying at the school. 00:07:52.63\00:07:54.10 Without sponsorship, 00:07:54.14\00:07:55.47 these children would not have the opportunity 00:07:55.50\00:07:57.51 for a new chance in life. 00:07:57.54\00:07:59.61 I really thank the Asian Aid sponsors, 00:07:59.64\00:08:02.24 the owners. 00:08:02.28\00:08:04.91 If it may not, 00:08:04.95\00:08:06.72 if the sponsorship is not there, 00:08:06.75\00:08:09.22 my life would not be there. 00:08:09.25\00:08:11.75 Today is a special day for the staff and students 00:08:23.10\00:08:25.63 of Asian Aid School for the Blind 00:08:25.67\00:08:27.17 in Bobbili, India. 00:08:27.20\00:08:28.60 Standing on both sides of the entrance, 00:08:28.64\00:08:30.84 the students and staff welcome 00:08:30.87\00:08:32.57 the arrival of a special guest Garwin McNeilus. 00:08:32.61\00:08:36.08 Garwin is an Adventist businessman 00:08:36.11\00:08:37.81 from Minnesota who has sponsored 00:08:37.85\00:08:39.71 hundreds of children in India. 00:08:39.75\00:08:41.48 He and his family has supported 00:08:41.52\00:08:43.12 and built a number of urgently need buildings 00:08:43.15\00:08:45.35 for Adventist schools, 00:08:45.39\00:08:46.82 including the school for the blind in Bobbili. 00:08:46.86\00:08:50.13 The needs of the blind school 00:08:50.16\00:08:51.93 were first brought to me by Helen Eager. 00:08:51.96\00:08:55.16 And Helen showed a video of where they were, 00:08:55.20\00:08:58.63 the conditions they were and how they had to take 00:08:58.67\00:09:01.54 their sleeping mattresses out, 00:09:01.57\00:09:06.11 lay them outside, sometimes it's raining, 00:09:06.14\00:09:09.54 put the desk in have their class, 00:09:09.58\00:09:12.58 and it made an impression that just wouldn't go away 00:09:12.61\00:09:16.08 on my heart. 00:09:16.12\00:09:18.82 Moved by the plight of the blind children 00:09:18.85\00:09:20.76 in an old crowed building in town, 00:09:20.79\00:09:23.02 Garwin drew out a plan to move them to a bigger campus 00:09:23.06\00:09:26.09 just outside Bobbili town. 00:09:26.13\00:09:27.86 He also designed the buildings. 00:09:27.90\00:09:29.90 This is beautifully designed for the blind children 00:09:29.93\00:09:34.14 who cannot see. 00:09:34.17\00:09:35.74 And once they get inside they take a single walk. 00:09:35.77\00:09:39.57 They can easily understand which side is a boy's hostel, 00:09:39.61\00:09:42.84 which side is the girl's hostel, 00:09:42.88\00:09:44.85 there is nothing to be confused. 00:09:44.88\00:09:46.82 The children now have a beautiful campus 00:09:50.79\00:09:53.19 where they can feel safe and secure, 00:09:53.22\00:09:55.22 their own home away from home. 00:09:55.26\00:09:57.49 The Asian Aid School for the Blind 00:09:57.53\00:09:59.29 is not just an institution 00:09:59.33\00:10:00.73 that provides food and shelter for the blind, 00:10:00.76\00:10:03.16 but it's an institution that prepares 00:10:03.20\00:10:04.97 them for the world outside. 00:10:05.00\00:10:07.07 And remember when they finish year 12 for example, 00:10:07.10\00:10:09.57 I'm talking about the sight impaired children, 00:10:09.60\00:10:13.17 they can go into university 00:10:13.21\00:10:15.11 and by giving them these opportunities, 00:10:15.14\00:10:17.21 they can get jobs that are already 00:10:17.25\00:10:18.85 there that government has set aside 00:10:18.88\00:10:20.92 for people with these sort of disabilities. 00:10:20.95\00:10:23.22 So we are channeling them, giving them the skills, 00:10:23.25\00:10:26.32 giving them the qualifications, preparing them for employment 00:10:26.35\00:10:30.96 but also we are giving them life skills. 00:10:30.99\00:10:36.16 These children may not have the ability to see, 00:10:36.20\00:10:38.83 but this disability does not deprive 00:10:38.87\00:10:40.87 them of the ability to learn. 00:10:40.90\00:10:42.64 They are perfectly capable 00:10:42.67\00:10:44.01 of acquiring skills needed for employment. 00:10:44.04\00:10:46.41 In fact, the Indian government refers 00:10:46.44\00:10:48.54 to them not as disabled but differently abled. 00:10:48.58\00:10:51.35 And the Asian Aid School for the Blind 00:10:51.38\00:10:53.31 provides them an ideal place 00:10:53.35\00:10:55.02 for these differently able children to acquire skills. 00:10:55.05\00:10:58.15 Without individual sponsorship 00:11:03.56\00:11:05.39 these children would not be here. 00:11:05.43\00:11:07.63 Today, because of Child Impact sponsorship program 00:11:07.66\00:11:10.77 and individual supporting its program, 00:11:10.80\00:11:13.03 hundreds of differently able students like Jagan 00:11:13.07\00:11:15.60 can receive an education, 00:11:15.64\00:11:17.27 an education that will help them to lead a dignified life. 00:11:17.31\00:11:21.28 Whether one is able to contribute in a small way 00:11:21.31\00:11:23.88 or in a big way, sponsorship endows these children's future. 00:11:23.91\00:11:28.58 Whether the Lord has blessed in different ways, 00:11:28.62\00:11:33.66 we are accountable for what we have. 00:11:33.69\00:11:36.76 We all know the Bible parable of the widow's mite, 00:11:36.79\00:11:40.76 how she gave what she could. 00:11:40.80\00:11:42.96 Some can do a child, some can do half a child, 00:11:43.00\00:11:46.77 some can do many child, 00:11:46.80\00:11:49.34 but the combination of what the Lord has blessed 00:11:49.37\00:11:52.37 you with is essential 00:11:52.41\00:11:54.54 for the welfare of the children 00:11:54.58\00:11:57.48 and it will make a difference in eternity. 00:11:57.51\00:12:01.52 Thanks to the untiring efforts of Helen Eager, 00:12:05.69\00:12:08.19 organizations like Child Impact International 00:12:08.22\00:12:10.89 and individual sponsors like Garwin McNeilus, 00:12:10.93\00:12:13.63 children at the blind school not only have a place 00:12:13.66\00:12:16.10 where they can acquire life skills 00:12:16.13\00:12:17.63 for the world outside, 00:12:17.67\00:12:19.00 but they have a place where they can prepare their souls 00:12:19.03\00:12:21.67 for the world to come. 00:12:21.70\00:12:23.04 I think of the blind school 00:12:23.07\00:12:26.37 if not daily sometimes several times a day. 00:12:26.41\00:12:29.18 And I think of the story 00:12:29.21\00:12:32.45 when we were taking the children 00:12:32.48\00:12:35.18 to get their eye operation and Dorothy Watts, 00:12:35.22\00:12:41.72 a long time friend of India 00:12:41.76\00:12:45.53 who is not with us anymore 00:12:45.56\00:12:48.00 and I were sitting on the bench. 00:12:48.03\00:12:51.33 Had a little girl, 00:12:51.37\00:12:53.97 and the little girl Dorothy says, 00:12:54.00\00:12:56.60 what do you want to do 00:12:56.64\00:12:58.47 if your operation is successful? 00:12:58.51\00:13:00.31 What is the first thing that you want to see? 00:13:00.34\00:13:03.81 And she said, "Well, I've held a kitty, 00:13:03.85\00:13:09.45 I petted a cow, she says, I want to see Jesus." 00:13:09.48\00:13:14.39 And Dorothy said, "Well, 00:13:14.42\00:13:17.16 we can see but we can't see Him." 00:13:17.19\00:13:20.93 And she says, "Well, then show me a picture." 00:13:20.96\00:13:26.27 And Dorothy said, 00:13:26.30\00:13:27.64 "Well, your operation may not be successful." 00:13:27.67\00:13:31.74 And she said, she thought, 00:13:31.77\00:13:34.11 she had a look on her face she says, 00:13:34.14\00:13:36.14 "That's okay, I'll see Him in heaven." 00:13:36.18\00:13:38.05 Wow. 00:13:38.08\00:13:39.41 Here this little girl, 00:13:39.45\00:13:41.05 the first thing she want to see if she could see is Jesus. 00:13:41.08\00:13:45.45 And I think when we wake up in the morning, 00:13:45.49\00:13:48.32 is that our thought? 00:13:48.36\00:13:50.13 The first thing we want to see is Jesus, 00:13:50.16\00:13:52.39 it has such an effect. 00:13:52.43\00:13:54.76 Jim, I think about it daily. 00:13:54.80\00:13:57.80 The faith of a blind child cannot be explained, 00:13:57.83\00:14:03.20 you need to come and feel it. 00:14:03.24\00:14:05.14
