Child Impact International is an organization giving hope, 00:00:07.30\00:00:11.27 previously called Asian Aid. 00:00:11.31\00:00:13.34 Child Impact International is an organization fostering 00:00:13.38\00:00:16.61 permanent positive change in the lives of disadvantaged 00:00:16.64\00:00:19.75 children and their communities. 00:00:19.78\00:00:21.85 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:21.88\00:00:24.45 in the lives of children and those who are in need. 00:00:24.49\00:00:27.32 Serving communities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, 00:00:27.36\00:00:31.36 Myanmar, and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:31.39\00:00:34.66 For the last 50 years, Child Impact 00:00:34.70\00:00:37.07 has invested in the futures of people 00:00:37.10\00:00:39.13 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:00:39.17\00:00:42.07 Driven by the dedication to helping 00:00:42.10\00:00:44.11 those who have the least, 00:00:44.14\00:00:45.67 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:45.71\00:00:47.64 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:47.68\00:00:49.88 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:49.91\00:00:52.38 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.41\00:00:54.52 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:54.55\00:00:58.12 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:00:58.22\00:01:00.56 and the blind children, 00:01:00.59\00:01:01.92 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:01:01.96\00:01:04.79 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:04.83\00:01:08.63 giving hope to children, giving hope to community, 00:01:08.66\00:01:11.97 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:12.00\00:01:14.70 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:14.74\00:01:20.71 I've been in this position over eight years now, 00:01:20.74\00:01:23.91 and the privilege that I have in my role 00:01:23.95\00:01:26.45 is being able to visit the children 00:01:26.48\00:01:28.82 that you, the donors, support. 00:01:28.85\00:01:31.02 And as I meet them, I see the difference 00:01:31.05\00:01:33.62 that you make in their lives, 00:01:33.66\00:01:35.59 the difference you make in where they live 00:01:35.62\00:01:37.56 in their village, the difference you make 00:01:37.59\00:01:39.66 with their education. 00:01:39.69\00:01:41.13 And then finally when they get a job... 00:01:41.16\00:01:43.57 Just the other day in India, we met a bank manager. 00:01:43.60\00:01:47.27 He was brought up as a sponsored child 00:01:47.30\00:01:50.07 from a very poor village 00:01:50.11\00:01:52.01 and now he has a successful job, 00:01:52.04\00:01:54.44 he has a family, 00:01:54.48\00:01:55.81 and he is impacting the lives of others. 00:01:55.84\00:01:58.25 And, in fact, the amazing thing is he is now 00:01:58.28\00:02:01.02 sponsoring two children in one of our programs. 00:02:01.05\00:02:06.22 Early when we were married, 00:02:06.25\00:02:07.92 Nick and I spent time over in India, 00:02:07.96\00:02:10.36 and were working for a mission, 00:02:10.39\00:02:12.06 another mission organization for about six months. 00:02:12.09\00:02:14.86 And one of the opportunities we had was to be 00:02:14.90\00:02:17.80 in one of the schools where children were being 00:02:17.83\00:02:21.07 sponsored by Child Impact International 00:02:21.10\00:02:23.14 in receiving education there as well as clothing, 00:02:23.17\00:02:26.01 food, shelter. 00:02:26.04\00:02:27.44 And at that time we were given the opportunity to meet kids 00:02:27.48\00:02:31.45 that still needed sponsors, and have... 00:02:31.48\00:02:34.25 We were able to meet and pick a kid 00:02:34.28\00:02:37.35 that we wanted to sponsor personally at that time. 00:02:37.39\00:02:41.22 So we got to meet him, I think play a little, 00:02:41.26\00:02:44.59 maybe a little cricket with him, gave him 00:02:44.63\00:02:46.09 a little bit of a gift, 00:02:46.13\00:02:47.60 and even though... 00:02:47.63\00:02:49.10 Since then the child that we're sponsoring has changed. 00:02:49.13\00:02:53.60 That's how we started, and have decided 00:02:53.64\00:02:55.30 to continue to sponsor a child 00:02:55.34\00:02:57.04 through Child Impact International. 00:02:57.07\00:02:59.47 I'd say that if you are interested 00:02:59.51\00:03:00.84 in sponsoring a child, 00:03:00.88\00:03:03.88 I think it's a great opportunity 00:03:03.91\00:03:05.25 so and you certainly should. 00:03:05.28\00:03:07.08 There's so many mission fields in the world, you know, 00:03:07.12\00:03:09.62 the kid who lives just down the street from you, 00:03:09.65\00:03:11.32 that's a mission field, your own children, 00:03:11.35\00:03:13.36 your own family, that's a mission field 00:03:13.39\00:03:16.12 but, you know, we were called 00:03:16.16\00:03:18.53 to go into all nations and make disciples. 00:03:18.56\00:03:20.90 And when you sponsor a child for a Christian education, 00:03:20.93\00:03:25.40 you know, it's more than just giving them education, 00:03:25.43\00:03:27.77 teaching them also about Christ, 00:03:27.80\00:03:29.37 and the plan of salvation. 00:03:29.40\00:03:31.41 And so, you know, it's gonna benefit that child, 00:03:31.44\00:03:34.51 it's gonna benefit that child's community 00:03:34.54\00:03:36.58 and, you know, the money 00:03:36.61\00:03:39.45 that we spend every month to support this child, 00:03:39.48\00:03:42.22 it's an easy sacrifice for us but it makes 00:03:42.25\00:03:45.29 just the world of difference in their lives. 00:03:45.32\00:03:48.79 Sponsoring children in activities 00:03:48.82\00:03:53.09 like these mission schools 00:03:53.13\00:03:54.96 and opportunities is a tremendous way 00:03:55.00\00:03:58.47 to help form the character of young people 00:03:58.50\00:04:02.37 as they look to the future. 00:04:02.40\00:04:03.87 They will never forget their association 00:04:03.91\00:04:07.01 in a Christian environment. 00:04:07.04\00:04:08.91 And by God's grace, 00:04:08.94\00:04:10.28 many of them will become 00:04:10.31\00:04:11.91 members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:04:11.95\00:04:14.62 It is absolutely a powerful witness 00:04:14.65\00:04:18.02 to sponsor a child in Child Impact 00:04:18.05\00:04:21.52 and so many other organizations that help 00:04:21.56\00:04:25.83 young people to find Jesus. 00:04:25.86\00:04:29.13 Sponsoring a child not only has short-term effects, 00:04:29.16\00:04:33.64 but it has a long-term effect. 00:04:33.67\00:04:36.50 Sponsoring a child is investing in the character 00:04:36.54\00:04:39.91 of a young person for eternity. 00:04:39.94\00:04:42.54 We're taping this right here in Myanmar, 00:04:42.58\00:04:46.05 at the Myanmar Union Adventist Seminary, 00:04:46.08\00:04:49.48 and about one-third of the students 00:04:49.52\00:04:52.05 or one quarter of the students 00:04:52.09\00:04:54.22 are being sponsored by Child Impact. 00:04:54.26\00:04:57.16 People who become workers in God's church, 00:04:57.19\00:05:00.96 people who make an impact in the community 00:05:01.00\00:05:04.07 have been people who have been sponsored. 00:05:04.10\00:05:06.90 Your sponsorship is absolutely an investment 00:05:06.94\00:05:11.14 in the future of the church. 00:05:11.17\00:05:12.87 I've had the opportunity to visit India and Myanmar 00:05:22.68\00:05:26.65 with Child Impact International. 00:05:26.69\00:05:28.96 These trips have provided me with fantastic insight 00:05:28.99\00:05:33.09 as to how Child Impact works, 00:05:33.13\00:05:36.16 and the work that they do with thousands of children. 00:05:36.20\00:05:39.47 The sponsorship program is absolutely 00:05:39.50\00:05:42.57 what makes this entire organization 00:05:42.60\00:05:44.77 be effective. 00:05:44.81\00:05:46.14 And they are extremely effective. 00:05:46.17\00:05:48.38 Jim, tell us a little bit more about this sponsorship program? 00:05:48.41\00:05:51.78 First of all, I'd like to know how many children 00:05:51.81\00:05:54.42 are being sponsored at the moment. 00:05:54.45\00:05:56.38 And what are the countries that the children are in? 00:05:56.42\00:05:59.79 Oh, Jaime, we're in six countries. 00:05:59.82\00:06:01.92 We have 3,500 children in Adventist mission schools. 00:06:01.96\00:06:06.80 Our biggest country is India, then Bangladesh and Myanmar. 00:06:06.83\00:06:11.87 And we also have children in Nepal and Sri Lanka. 00:06:11.90\00:06:15.90 Okay, excellent. 00:06:15.94\00:06:18.24 How do you select the children for sponsorship? 00:06:18.27\00:06:22.31 Well, the children are selected on need, 00:06:22.34\00:06:24.21 all right? 00:06:24.25\00:06:25.58 And the definition of needy varies from country to country. 00:06:25.61\00:06:29.75 But these are people well below the poverty line. 00:06:29.78\00:06:33.72 And also people that the parents want their child 00:06:33.76\00:06:37.83 to go to an Adventist school are very poor. 00:06:37.86\00:06:41.00 So we take them based on need, 00:06:41.03\00:06:43.53 and we put them in an Adventist Mission School. 00:06:43.57\00:06:45.73 Okay. 00:06:45.77\00:06:47.10 Now, when I was there with you, 00:06:47.14\00:06:48.80 I saw that there are different schools, 00:06:48.84\00:06:51.21 there are different categories of sponsorships. 00:06:51.24\00:06:54.18 Can you explain that for us? 00:06:54.21\00:06:56.38 Yes, well, first of all, we have a day student, 00:06:56.41\00:06:59.81 that's a child who obviously 00:06:59.85\00:07:01.35 lives near the school, 00:07:01.38\00:07:03.05 and walks to the school or gets public transport. 00:07:03.08\00:07:07.12 Then we have boarding, which is our biggest category. 00:07:07.16\00:07:11.29 These are children who attend boarding school. 00:07:11.33\00:07:14.63 And so the sponsorship 00:07:14.66\00:07:16.16 not only covers their education, 00:07:16.20\00:07:18.43 it covers their accommodation and it covers their food. 00:07:18.47\00:07:22.70 Then we actually allow donors to sponsor their children 00:07:22.74\00:07:27.11 to higher education, 00:07:27.14\00:07:28.98 which we call tertiary in those countries. 00:07:29.01\00:07:31.78 And that may be a degree course, 00:07:31.81\00:07:34.05 or it may be a course 00:07:34.08\00:07:35.65 to give them a trade or a future. 00:07:35.68\00:07:38.32 And then we have special needs children. 00:07:38.35\00:07:41.69 This is our school for the blind, 00:07:41.72\00:07:43.96 the day school for orphans. 00:07:43.99\00:07:46.53 And so this category is critical to these children, 00:07:46.56\00:07:50.33 because these children have huge needs. 00:07:50.37\00:07:53.03 So there's a special needs category as well. 00:07:53.07\00:07:56.17 And I visited an orphanage and a blind school with you. 00:07:56.20\00:08:00.88 And these kids would otherwise probably 00:08:00.91\00:08:02.91 never have an opportunity to excel in life. 00:08:02.94\00:08:06.75 And I was moved by how these children are being 00:08:06.78\00:08:10.79 developed with their shortcomings, 00:08:10.82\00:08:15.32 but with their talents and gifts, 00:08:15.36\00:08:17.83 to be able to honor and glorify God 00:08:17.86\00:08:21.30 and share with others as well. 00:08:21.33\00:08:23.63 Tell me, is it costly to sponsor a child 00:08:23.67\00:08:26.27 in any of these categories? 00:08:26.30\00:08:28.87 Well, I guess compare with education where we are, 00:08:28.90\00:08:32.77 it's not costly. 00:08:32.81\00:08:35.31 The day student starts off at $25 a month, 00:08:35.34\00:08:40.95 a boarder is $38 a month, 00:08:40.98\00:08:43.92 a special needs child is $48 a month. 00:08:43.95\00:08:47.56 And that covers their education. 00:08:47.59\00:08:49.86 If they're a boarder or the special needs, 00:08:49.89\00:08:53.80 it covers them at either the blind school, 00:08:53.83\00:08:56.56 the day school or the orphanage. 00:08:56.60\00:08:59.30 It also includes a book allowance, 00:08:59.33\00:09:01.94 and also a uniform allowance. 00:09:01.97\00:09:04.71 So it's quite comprehensive to cover their needs 00:09:04.74\00:09:09.61 to attend that Adventist Mission School. 00:09:09.64\00:09:12.11 Fantastic. 00:09:12.15\00:09:14.58 Now tell me, my wife and I 00:09:14.62\00:09:17.12 have given funds to sponsor children before. 00:09:17.15\00:09:20.46 But let's say, somebody is watching this right now 00:09:20.49\00:09:22.76 and wants to sponsor a child, how can they do that? 00:09:22.79\00:09:27.56 Well, the best way is to go on to our website, 00:09:27.60\00:09:30.37 which is childimpact.org. 00:09:30.40\00:09:32.60 That's childimpact.org. 00:09:32.63\00:09:34.80 And there, you go to the sponsorship page, 00:09:34.84\00:09:38.07 and you can choose your country, 00:09:38.11\00:09:40.68 you can choose your category, 00:09:40.71\00:09:42.71 and you'll see a range of children 00:09:42.74\00:09:44.51 now that are available. 00:09:44.55\00:09:46.11 Now if you can't get online, just give us a call. 00:09:46.15\00:09:49.22 Call our office and the ladies, they will be very happy 00:09:49.25\00:09:52.99 to talk to you about 00:09:53.02\00:09:54.72 what current children are available, 00:09:54.76\00:09:58.76 or what their needs are. 00:09:58.79\00:10:00.23 Okay. 00:10:00.26\00:10:01.60 So let's say somebody watching right now 00:10:01.63\00:10:04.40 wants to sponsor a child. 00:10:04.43\00:10:06.20 Can you explain how the funds that somebody gives to Child 00:10:06.23\00:10:09.60 Impact actually gets to that child? 00:10:09.64\00:10:13.17 Yes, Jaime, well, that's a good question. 00:10:13.21\00:10:15.31 First of all, we are registered 501c3 charity. 00:10:15.34\00:10:19.91 So the donation is tax deductible. 00:10:19.95\00:10:23.65 Secondly, and we want the donors to know, 00:10:23.69\00:10:26.32 we retain 15% overhead, we believe that's very fair. 00:10:26.35\00:10:29.92 Yes. 00:10:29.96\00:10:31.29 Last year it was only 11%. 00:10:31.33\00:10:33.36 But at the maximum, it can be up to 15%. 00:10:33.40\00:10:37.37 Then the money goes direct to our partner and country. 00:10:37.40\00:10:41.37 And then it goes direct to the school. 00:10:41.40\00:10:43.97 So we have to have our own on the ground organization. 00:10:44.01\00:10:48.18 And the money goes to them. 00:10:48.21\00:10:50.05 And then it goes direct to the school. 00:10:50.08\00:10:52.41 And then we have field officers. 00:10:52.45\00:10:54.42 And each child is visited three times a year. 00:10:54.45\00:10:58.49 We check that the funds have arrived. 00:10:58.52\00:11:00.69 And we check each individual child. 00:11:00.72\00:11:03.39 And then the donors get school reports, 00:11:03.43\00:11:06.43 they give, well, an APR, 00:11:06.46\00:11:08.36 annual performance report. 00:11:08.40\00:11:10.53 And just like your own children's report, 00:11:10.57\00:11:12.67 sometimes they're exciting, 00:11:12.70\00:11:14.40 sometimes you might be disappointed. 00:11:14.44\00:11:16.81 But you can also write to your child 00:11:16.84\00:11:19.31 and your child will write to you. 00:11:19.34\00:11:21.44 So we believe we've got a good system 00:11:21.48\00:11:24.01 that delivers accountability, 00:11:24.05\00:11:26.08 but also involves you with the child, 00:11:26.11\00:11:29.25 and correspondence, and reports. 00:11:29.28\00:11:31.75 Well, as I mentioned before, 00:11:31.79\00:11:33.25 I have been to India and Myanmar 00:11:33.29\00:11:35.66 with
