Child Impact International is an organization giving hope, 00:00:07.34\00:00:11.31 previously called Asian Aid. 00:00:11.34\00:00:13.27 Child Impact International is an organization Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:21.92\00:00:24.35 in the lives of children 00:00:24.39\00:00:25.82 and those who are in need. 00:00:25.85\00:00:27.32 Serving communities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, 00:00:27.36\00:00:30.53 Sri Lanka, Myanmar, 00:00:30.56\00:00:32.29 and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:32.33\00:00:34.66 For the last 50 years, 00:00:34.70\00:00:36.16 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people 00:00:36.20\00:00:39.13 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:00:39.17\00:00:42.04 Driven by the dedication to helping those 00:00:42.07\00:00:44.41 who have the least, 00:00:44.44\00:00:45.77 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:45.81\00:00:47.64 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:47.68\00:00:49.88 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:49.91\00:00:52.38 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.41\00:00:54.62 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:54.65\00:00:57.59 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:00:57.62\00:01:00.59 and the blind children, 00:01:00.62\00:01:01.96 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:01:01.99\00:01:04.66 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:04.69\00:01:08.63 giving hope to children, 00:01:08.66\00:01:10.07 giving hope to communities, 00:01:10.10\00:01:11.97 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:12.00\00:01:14.67 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:14.70\00:01:16.40 Our television series 00:01:19.91\00:01:21.28 Hope in Motion has been a big success 00:01:21.31\00:01:24.31 and we want to continue to share with you 00:01:24.35\00:01:27.05 some of the field stories 00:01:27.08\00:01:28.85 that we have filmed over the years. 00:01:28.88\00:01:31.09 So just from time to time, 00:01:31.12\00:01:33.22 it may refer to Asian Aid 00:01:33.25\00:01:35.42 as we reflect on these great stories 00:01:35.46\00:01:38.49 as we share them with you. 00:01:38.53\00:01:39.93 The beautiful landscapes, 00:01:48.27\00:01:50.01 its people, the colors and customs, 00:01:50.04\00:01:52.74 that's India in a nutshell. 00:01:52.77\00:01:54.51 Child Impact International 00:02:04.49\00:02:06.15 has been working in this vast land 00:02:06.19\00:02:07.99 since its very beginning, which is over 50 years ago now. 00:02:08.02\00:02:11.66 Primarily focused on child sponsorship, 00:02:11.69\00:02:14.46 Child Impact also has been instrumental 00:02:14.50\00:02:16.80 in building many children's homes and schools 00:02:16.83\00:02:19.47 to complement its sponsorship program. 00:02:19.50\00:02:22.10 The Immanuel English School in Jeypore 00:02:22.14\00:02:24.41 in the state of Orissa is one such school 00:02:24.44\00:02:26.84 that has undergone a transformation. 00:02:26.88\00:02:29.94 We just feel surprised 00:02:29.98\00:02:32.85 how the things have changed. 00:02:32.88\00:02:35.42 Everything was just like the hill 00:02:35.45\00:02:39.29 that you see behind, 00:02:39.32\00:02:40.82 full of bushes and unwanted plants. 00:02:40.86\00:02:44.19 So nobody from town ever thought that 00:02:44.23\00:02:47.96 there can be something here, 00:02:48.00\00:02:50.17 but God has blessed this place 00:02:50.20\00:02:52.50 and we can see a great change. 00:02:52.53\00:02:56.97 Starting with around 50 children and few staff, 00:02:57.01\00:03:00.11 all under just one building, 00:03:00.14\00:03:01.88 the school has now developed into an expansive campus. 00:03:01.91\00:03:06.08 The larger facility made it possible 00:03:06.11\00:03:08.12 to bring in more children from the tribal communities 00:03:08.15\00:03:10.85 as well as nearby villages. 00:03:10.89\00:03:12.82 As the news of the new facility spread, 00:03:12.85\00:03:15.16 many more children from Adventist 00:03:15.19\00:03:17.23 and non-Adventist families 00:03:17.26\00:03:18.89 desire to be educated at the new school. 00:03:18.93\00:03:21.16 Many in rural India struggle to earn two dollars a day, 00:03:25.63\00:03:29.27 their only way of earning a living 00:03:29.30\00:03:30.97 is grazing their livestock or working in the fields. 00:03:31.01\00:03:34.41 Here poverty passes on from generation to generation 00:03:34.44\00:03:38.38 and education is not an option. 00:03:38.41\00:03:40.95 I mean some parts of India really seem to be growing 00:03:40.98\00:03:43.59 and really, you know, 00:03:43.62\00:03:44.95 India seems to be really coming up as they say. 00:03:44.99\00:03:47.16 But when you go to the villages and the slums, 00:03:47.19\00:03:50.23 they have not improved in all the years that, 00:03:50.26\00:03:52.96 you know, that I've been coming to India 00:03:52.99\00:03:54.33 which is now more than 30 years. 00:03:54.36\00:03:56.83 You know, when you go to the villages 00:03:56.87\00:03:58.27 and you see, enter some of the slums 00:03:58.30\00:04:00.07 and you see how bad, 00:04:00.10\00:04:01.87 you know, the conditions are that the people 00:04:01.90\00:04:03.77 and the children are living under 00:04:03.81\00:04:05.41 because there's often 00:04:05.44\00:04:06.78 it's not that they don't want to work 00:04:06.81\00:04:08.18 but there's just not enough work available. 00:04:08.21\00:04:11.91 Although a majority of them 00:04:11.95\00:04:13.28 cannot afford to send their children to school, 00:04:13.31\00:04:15.82 they do view education as a catalyst for change. 00:04:15.85\00:04:19.42 Sixty to seventy percent 00:04:19.45\00:04:21.06 we are dependent on the sponsorship 00:04:21.09\00:04:25.79 because majority of this children are poor 00:04:25.83\00:04:29.06 and they don't have any support. 00:04:29.10\00:04:34.30 Without the support of any sponsorship, 00:04:34.34\00:04:37.51 those children would not be here. 00:04:37.54\00:04:40.51 Today, about 2,600 children in India 00:04:40.54\00:04:43.35 are sponsored by Child Impact 00:04:43.38\00:04:45.58 and because of their commitment to the welfare of children, 00:04:45.61\00:04:48.45 especially children from tribal communities 00:04:48.48\00:04:50.65 and villages. 00:04:50.69\00:04:52.02 These children are reaping the benefits 00:04:52.05\00:04:53.86 of an Adventist education. 00:04:53.89\00:04:55.46 Devoki Moharia, a science teacher 00:05:21.98\00:05:24.25 at the Emmanuel English School was a former student here. 00:05:24.29\00:05:28.19 I finished my BSc degree in college 00:05:28.22\00:05:31.79 and I'm very much interested in science 00:05:31.83\00:05:34.26 because I was good at science. 00:05:34.30\00:05:37.07 In this school I teach mostly 8th, 9th, 10th. 00:05:37.10\00:05:40.94 I teach them chemistry and biology. 00:05:40.97\00:05:44.67 Devoki was one among the first batch of children 00:05:44.71\00:05:47.38 to be brought to the school from neighboring villages 00:05:47.41\00:05:49.78 when Helen Eager and some of the staff 00:05:49.81\00:05:51.98 from the school visited these villages. 00:05:52.01\00:05:54.35 I sent messages to the church pastors 00:05:54.38\00:05:58.62 if there are any children from poverty level 00:05:58.65\00:06:02.46 and wherever there are no schools. 00:06:02.49\00:06:05.23 So many names came from different churches. 00:06:05.26\00:06:10.63 Then first I went to some orphan children, 00:06:10.67\00:06:14.40 then I came to know that there are two girls, 00:06:14.44\00:06:17.94 very small girls nearby Kotpat town. 00:06:17.97\00:06:21.58 So I went there and I met 00:06:21.61\00:06:24.41 with her father of Devoki. 00:06:24.45\00:06:28.22 Then her father was not willing to send the girl here 00:06:28.25\00:06:33.92 because there was no boundary around 00:06:33.96\00:06:36.12 and there was only one building built by Asian Aid. 00:06:36.16\00:06:40.50 Then when I went, 00:06:40.53\00:06:41.86 she was the smallest among the two. 00:06:41.90\00:06:44.93 Then she started crying not to take photo. 00:06:44.97\00:06:48.47 I carried her, I gave her a chocolate. 00:06:48.50\00:06:52.17 Then I made her to stand, 00:06:52.21\00:06:54.48 then I took a photograph for Mummy Eager, 00:06:54.51\00:06:57.28 and that's how I found her. 00:06:57.31\00:06:59.98 I was very happy thinking that I'm going to go to a school, 00:07:00.02\00:07:03.35 a hostel, English medium. 00:07:03.39\00:07:05.32 No one knows in my school what it means, 00:07:05.35\00:07:07.49 they don't know how to talk in English and all. 00:07:07.52\00:07:09.62 So I was very happy that I will be the person 00:07:09.66\00:07:11.53 to learn English and all. 00:07:11.56\00:07:13.36 So when I came here, first two, three days, 00:07:13.40\00:07:15.70 I was nervous, means, 00:07:15.73\00:07:17.07 I used to remember parents, all this thing. 00:07:17.10\00:07:18.83 And only one single building was there and no boundary. 00:07:18.87\00:07:22.70 It was like jungle. 00:07:22.74\00:07:24.07 And jungle means I really get very, very scared of that. 00:07:24.11\00:07:27.74 And no boundary, no, nothing, only one building was there. 00:07:27.78\00:07:30.55 Boys, girls, staff, everyone in same building. 00:07:30.58\00:07:34.05 Doing all the activities, eating, sleeping, studying, 00:07:34.08\00:07:36.89 everything in the same building. 00:07:36.92\00:07:39.02 From right at the beginning 00:07:39.05\00:07:40.39 when the school was just one classroom, 00:07:40.42\00:07:42.32 then with the vision of Helen Eager, 00:07:42.36\00:07:44.56 and supporters like Garwin McNeilus, 00:07:44.59\00:07:47.16 this school sprouted into an institution 00:07:47.20\00:07:50.17 that now has, I think about 700 children. 00:07:50.20\00:07:53.23 And of those 600 are sponsored. 00:07:53.27\00:07:55.77 And now we see the success stories coming through. 00:07:55.80\00:07:58.81 Devoki, who was right at the school when it started, 00:07:58.84\00:08:02.51 she did her education at the school, 00:08:02.54\00:08:04.68 then she went away to university, 00:08:04.71\00:08:06.78 and now she's come back as a science teacher. 00:08:06.82\00:08:09.55 It's just so fantastic to see the difference 00:08:09.58\00:08:12.25 that has made with her, 00:08:12.29\00:08:13.99 but also with the children that are here. 00:08:14.02\00:08:17.93 If it weren't for the timely intervention 00:08:17.96\00:08:19.76 of Child Impact International 00:08:19.79\00:08:21.53 and people like Helen Eager, 00:08:21.56\00:08:23.10 Devoki Moharia's life would have seen misfortunes 00:08:23.13\00:08:26.13 of so many young girls like her in her village. 00:08:26.17\00:08:28.57 Life in rural India is simple. 00:08:44.55\00:08:46.86 People live in close quarters and as one unit. 00:08:46.89\00:08:49.52 During the day, they either go to the fields 00:08:54.10\00:08:56.46 or graze what little livestock they have. 00:08:56.50\00:08:59.37 And there is a clear order of social precedence 00:08:59.40\00:09:01.87 based on gender 00:09:01.90\00:09:03.24 and women have little or no say in its structure, 00:09:03.27\00:09:06.11 often leading to unjust practices 00:09:06.14\00:09:08.31 and misery. 00:09:08.34\00:09:09.68 In villages parents are uneducated 00:09:09.71\00:09:11.88 and they don't send their children 00:09:11.91\00:09:15.48 when they are small to the school. 00:09:15.52\00:09:17.69 So that is the reason I never went to school. 00:09:17.72\00:09:20.52 In villages that is a rule that when a girl is grown up, 00:09:20.56\00:09:24.29 she should be given in marriage to someone. 00:09:24.33\00:09:28.23 So in my case also it would have been like that 00:09:28.26\00:09:30.40 if I had not have been come to the school and study. 00:09:30.43\00:09:32.60 By this time I would have got married, 00:09:32.63\00:09:34.80 having children and all those things. 00:09:34.84\00:09:38.84 Child marriage is a common practice in South Asia 00:09:38.87\00:09:41.68 and it is more prevalent in India. 00:09:41.71\00:09:43.88 According to United Nations Children's Agency, 00:09:43.91\00:09:46.51 UNICEF, 18% of the girls are married by the age of 15. 00:09:46.55\00:09:52.72 Although Indian law has made child marriage illegal 00:09:52.75\00:09:55.62 and the practice is in decline in recent years, 00:09:55.66\00:09:57.99 customs and traditions dictate life in rural India. 00:09:58.03\00:10:01.16 It is like so in Devoki's village, Basuli. 00:10:01.20\00:10:05.53 At present I don't have any of my friends to my age. 00:10:05.57\00:10:08.34 Only I am the girl in my village. 00:10:08.37\00:10:10.51 All are younger to me. 00:10:10.54\00:10:11.97 All have got married. 00:10:12.01\00:10:14.24 By now she would have got married... 00:10:14.28\00:10:16.58 If she would not have studied here, 00:10:16.61\00:10:18.25 by now she would have got married. 00:10:18.28\00:10:20.42 So by now she would have been lost in that way. 00:10:20.45\00:10:23.69 But now she is in God's hand. 00:10:23.72\00:10:26.32 She is doing wonderful. 00:10:26.35\00:10:29.92 Although Devoki grew up in a boarding school at Jeypore 00:10:29.96\00:10:33.03 and went to college in bigger cities, 00:10:33.06\00:10:34.96 she has not forgotten her roots and is always happy 00:10:35.00\00:10:37.60 to visit her family and her village. 00:10:37.63\00:10:41.50 Yeah, I feel really happy 00:10:41.54\00:10:42.87 because I'm born and brought up in this village. 00:10:42.90\00:10:45.67 And even though I stay in town or something now 00:10:45.71\00:10:48.58 but I still have love for my village, 00:10:48.61\00:10:51.11 for my family members. 00:10:51.15\00:10:52.48 I feel very happy when I come back to my home and see them. 00:10:52.51\00:10:55.08 Devoki is the only girl 00:10:59.22\00:11:00.69 to have successfully received a college education 00:11:00.72\00:11:03.36 from her village, 00:11:03.39\00:11:04.73 and in a community where women have little or no say, 00:11:04.76\00:11:07.36 she is treated with utmost respect. 00:11:07.40\00:11:12.23 We feel very proud. 00:11:12.27\00:11:13.84 Whenever someone comes to visit us, 00:11:13.87\00:11:15.60 we always tell them about our daughter. 00:11:15.64\00:11:17.64 When she comes here, we are very happy and proud. 00:11:17.67\00:11:20.14 The realization that there are many more children out there 00:11:23.24\00:11:26.21 who yearn for a good education can be discouraging. 00:11:26.25\00:11:29.18 But it is reassuring to know that with sponsorship 00:11:29.22\00:11:32.15 we can go about making a difference 00:11:32.19\00:11:34.19 one day at a time. 00:11:34.22\00:11:35.86 When we are at home sometimes 00:11:35.89\00:11:38.56 we are not getting three meals to eat. 00:11:38.59\00:11:40.76 No good place to sleep. 00:11:40.80\00:11:42.70 So when schools are that like this school, 00:11:42.73\00:11:45.83 they're providing meals, education, everything. 00:11:45.87\00:11:48.27 Sponsors... 00:11:48.30\00:11:49.64 they are struggling hard to educate some other's lives. 00:11:49.67\00:11:52.57 That is something very great to understand. 00:11:52.61\00:11:55.44 Since sponsorship was there I studied. 00:11:55.48\00:11:59.91 So I'm so much grateful to my sponsor. 00:11:59.95\00:12:02.88 And to me it's really wonderful just to see the changes, 00:12:02.92\00:12:06.25 you know, when you see a child come looking dirty, 00:12:06.29\00:12:10.09 and unhappy, 00:12:10.13\00:12:11.49 and know that nobody cares about them, 00:12:11.53\00:12:13.96 and then after a very short time 00:12:14.00\00:12:16.06 to see the transformation, 00:12:16.10\00:12:17.43 and then after a few years to see them really doing well, 00:12:17.47\00:12:21.77 I think that's what makes it worthwhile. 00:12:21.80\00:12:26.24 Devoki although having better offers to teach outside 00:12:26.27\00:12:29.11 in bigger cities has come back to teach in the place 00:12:29.14\00:12:31.88 that gave her a new chance in life. 00:12:31.91\00:12:36.18 Actually, my education, 00:12:36.22\00:12:39.15 my foundation started from here. 00:12:39.19\00:12:41.89 So I thought first let me serve to my place, 00:12:41.92\00:12:45.56 the place where I belong to, 00:12:45.59\00:12:46.93 where I have got my foundation. 00:12:46.96\00:12:48.76 Whatever talent I have let me show to those people 00:12:48.80\00:12:51.10 so that those students also will learn about that. 00:12:51.13\00:12:55.30 I feel proud because 00:12:55.34\00:12:58.57 whatever I did for her, 00:12:58.61\00:13:00.54 I have got the fruit. 00:13:00.58\00:13:01.91 Today Child Impact International 00:13:15.26\00:13:17.36 continues to fulfill its commitment 00:13:17.39\00:13:19.19 to the welfare of children who are in need 00:13:19.23\00:13:21.70 and to provide them with an education 00:13:21.73\00:13:23.53 through sponsorship, 00:13:23.57\00:13:24.90 giving them hope and a chance for a better life. 00:13:24.93\00:13:29.50 So they're building lives. 00:13:29.54\00:13:32.71 Students and children they are in darkness. 00:13:32.74\00:13:35.04 They are receiving the light in their lives. 00:13:35.08\00:13:39.01 If they are at home the lights are been off 00:13:39.05\00:13:41.48 or gone away but once they come here 00:13:41.52\00:13:43.55 their light of their lives is being on. 00:13:43.59\00:13:47.82 I think that... 00:13:47.86\00:13:49.19 I feel since I was in this school, 00:13:49.22\00:13:51.59 I'm blessed to be in this position today. 00:13:51.63\00:13:54.23
