Child Impact International is an organization giving hope, 00:00:07.24\00:00:11.17 previously called Asian Aid. 00:00:11.21\00:00:13.14 Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:13.17\00:00:15.84 fostering permanent positive change 00:00:15.88\00:00:18.11 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:18.15\00:00:20.08 and their communities. 00:00:20.12\00:00:21.78 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:21.82\00:00:24.29 in the lives of children and those who are in need. 00:00:24.32\00:00:27.26 Serving communities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, 00:00:27.29\00:00:30.43 Sri Lanka, Myanmar, 00:00:30.46\00:00:32.23 and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:32.26\00:00:34.66 For the last 50 years, 00:00:34.70\00:00:36.06 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people 00:00:36.10\00:00:39.07 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:00:39.10\00:00:42.00 Driven by the dedication 00:00:42.04\00:00:43.37 to helping those who have the least, 00:00:43.41\00:00:45.57 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:45.61\00:00:47.61 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:47.64\00:00:49.81 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:49.84\00:00:52.31 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.35\00:00:54.45 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:54.48\00:00:57.49 to providing an education for orphans, 00:00:57.52\00:00:59.82 deaf, and the blind children, 00:00:59.85\00:01:01.82 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:01:01.86\00:01:04.53 But above all, 00:01:04.56\00:01:05.89 Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:05.93\00:01:08.53 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:08.56\00:01:11.87 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:11.90\00:01:14.57 This is Hope In Motion. 00:01:14.60\00:01:16.30 Our television series 00:01:20.18\00:01:21.54 Hope In Motion has been a big success 00:01:21.58\00:01:24.61 and we want to continue 00:01:24.65\00:01:26.35 to share with you some of the field stories 00:01:26.38\00:01:29.15 that we have filmed over the years. 00:01:29.18\00:01:31.45 So just from time to time, it may refer to Asian Aid 00:01:31.49\00:01:35.72 as we reflect on these great stories 00:01:35.76\00:01:38.86 as we share them with you. 00:01:38.89\00:01:42.70 Welcome to Myanmar. 00:01:42.73\00:01:44.80 I am standing on the bank 00:01:44.83\00:01:46.80 of the Delta region of this country 00:01:46.84\00:01:48.40 and as we look out onto the river, 00:01:48.44\00:01:50.47 this plays an integral part in the lives and economy 00:01:50.51\00:01:53.88 of the people in this country, 00:01:53.91\00:01:55.58 through fishing as well as transportation. 00:01:55.61\00:01:58.95 Ninety percent of the people in this country 00:01:58.98\00:02:01.42 practice Buddhism. 00:02:01.45\00:02:02.78 In fact, Myanmar 00:02:02.82\00:02:04.15 is one of the most religious Buddhist countries 00:02:04.19\00:02:06.45 in the world. 00:02:06.49\00:02:07.99 When looking at the proportion 00:02:08.02\00:02:09.82 amongst the people, population 00:02:09.86\00:02:12.59 as well as the amount of income that they spend on religion. 00:02:12.63\00:02:18.03 This presents a great challenge to the mission 00:02:18.07\00:02:20.64 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:02:20.67\00:02:22.10 here in Myanmar. 00:02:22.14\00:02:23.81 But this is beginning to change slowly. 00:02:23.84\00:02:26.54 Adventist education plays a central role 00:02:26.57\00:02:30.61 in the spreading of the gospel in Myanmar. 00:02:30.65\00:02:34.28 But challenge is that a decent education 00:02:34.32\00:02:37.85 is expensive, 00:02:37.89\00:02:39.22 most people can't afford it. 00:02:39.25\00:02:41.06 But this is where 00:02:41.09\00:02:42.42 an organizational like Asian Aid 00:02:42.46\00:02:44.19 has such a great deal of impact. 00:02:44.23\00:02:46.70 They are concerned and committed 00:02:46.73\00:02:48.96 to the welfare of children in need here. 00:02:49.00\00:02:52.53 Join me on a journey 00:02:52.57\00:02:55.00 as we see what Asian Aid is doing 00:02:55.04\00:02:58.04 to strengthen and further the mission 00:02:58.07\00:03:00.21 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Myanmar. 00:03:00.24\00:03:02.94 Myanmar or Burma 00:03:07.52\00:03:09.15 as it used to be called is in Southeast Asia. 00:03:09.18\00:03:12.79 It borders China, India, Bangladesh, 00:03:12.82\00:03:15.22 Laos and Thailand. 00:03:15.26\00:03:17.66 It has naturally absorbed some of the cultural influences 00:03:17.69\00:03:20.83 of these neighbors. 00:03:20.86\00:03:22.46 For years, colonial rule was seen here but then, 00:03:22.50\00:03:26.07 rampant ethnic strife 00:03:26.10\00:03:28.14 caused a military backed government 00:03:28.17\00:03:30.47 to take power. 00:03:30.51\00:03:32.17 But more recently, 00:03:32.21\00:03:33.54 civilian rule has come to be established 00:03:33.58\00:03:37.15 and the country has opened up its doors 00:03:37.18\00:03:38.95 to the outside world. 00:03:38.98\00:03:41.18 There is peace and freedom. 00:03:41.22\00:03:44.02 This is good news for the mission 00:03:44.05\00:03:45.39 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Myanmar 00:03:45.42\00:03:48.12 and these supporting ministries like Asian Aid. 00:03:48.16\00:03:51.19 Myanmar is predominately a Buddhist country 00:04:00.47\00:04:03.51 where over 85% of the population 00:04:03.54\00:04:06.57 practices Buddhism. 00:04:06.61\00:04:08.74 Public evangelism is banned, 00:04:08.78\00:04:11.08 but the Adventist message is slowly trickling through. 00:04:11.11\00:04:15.15 The main reason for that is our school system. 00:04:15.18\00:04:18.55 Our Adventist schools are a wonderful place for us 00:04:18.59\00:04:21.56 to introduce Jesus to the children 00:04:21.59\00:04:24.13 at a very early age, 00:04:24.16\00:04:26.53 but being a poor country, 00:04:26.56\00:04:28.13 many children struggle to attend school 00:04:28.16\00:04:30.97 and get a good education. 00:04:31.00\00:04:32.97 This is where Asian Aid has its biggest impact. 00:04:33.00\00:04:37.71 Last year at the GC session in San Antonio, 00:04:37.74\00:04:40.31 I was privileged to do a benefit concert 00:04:40.34\00:04:42.21 for Asian Aid 00:04:42.24\00:04:43.58 so that more children could be sponsored. 00:04:43.61\00:04:46.01 When I heard about the work 00:04:46.05\00:04:47.38 that is also being done here in Myanmar, 00:04:47.42\00:04:49.62 I was naturally curious 00:04:49.65\00:04:50.99 and I wanted to come here and see for myself. 00:04:51.02\00:04:53.69 I wanted to see exactly what Asian Aid is doing 00:04:53.72\00:04:56.86 to bring hope, salvation, and a future 00:04:56.89\00:05:00.50 to children in need in Myanmar. 00:05:00.53\00:05:02.43 I was first taken to Myanmar Union Adventist seminary 00:05:20.38\00:05:23.92 or MUAS, 00:05:23.95\00:05:25.75 as it is commonly known here. 00:05:25.79\00:05:27.86 Now, MUAS is the only Adventist institution of higher learning 00:05:27.89\00:05:33.23 in Myanmar, 00:05:33.26\00:05:34.60 and it plays a very important role 00:05:34.63\00:05:37.07 in developing young minds 00:05:37.10\00:05:39.00 to be future torchbearers for the church. 00:05:39.03\00:05:43.27 We have only one Adventist College in Myanmar, 00:05:43.30\00:05:48.01 and it is very important 00:05:48.04\00:05:49.54 because all youths of Adventist Church in Myanmar, 00:05:49.58\00:05:54.85 they come here to study. 00:05:54.88\00:05:58.25 It helped them 00:05:58.29\00:05:59.62 to get the education for their life, 00:05:59.65\00:06:02.26 and also their spiritual education 00:06:02.29\00:06:05.83 to prepare for testimony to others 00:06:05.86\00:06:09.96 about the love of God. 00:06:10.00\00:06:12.93 Right now we have over 600 students 00:06:12.97\00:06:15.90 this semester. 00:06:15.94\00:06:18.07 And most of our students 00:06:18.11\00:06:20.74 come from financially poor background. 00:06:20.78\00:06:24.68 And our members scatter all over Myanmar 00:06:24.71\00:06:30.15 from different regions and states. 00:06:30.19\00:06:33.82 So in my union mission, 00:06:33.86\00:06:37.53 the church have a good anticipation 00:06:37.56\00:06:41.66 on these young people. 00:06:41.70\00:06:43.50 They are the future of the church. 00:06:43.53\00:06:45.80 And they have solid Adventist education 00:06:45.83\00:06:50.37 in this institution only. 00:06:50.41\00:06:51.74 The seminary is a beautiful campus. 00:06:56.75\00:06:59.95 As I was given a quick tour, 00:06:59.98\00:07:01.95 I heard music coming from the auditorium. 00:07:01.98\00:07:04.89 Intrigued by the sound of violin filling the air, 00:07:04.92\00:07:08.29 I went to the auditorium 00:07:08.32\00:07:09.66 to find beautiful young ladies practicing. 00:07:09.69\00:07:15.23 Using and developing your talents 00:07:15.26\00:07:17.80 for God's honor and glory. 00:07:17.83\00:07:19.20 All right. 00:08:44.19\00:08:45.62 Fantastic. 00:08:45.65\00:08:47.19 I have been here at the seminary 00:08:47.22\00:08:48.62 for just a few hours, 00:08:48.66\00:08:49.99 but one of the things 00:08:50.03\00:08:51.36 that has brought me the most joy 00:08:51.39\00:08:52.89 was to hear them practicing. 00:08:52.93\00:08:54.63 We were walking around the campus, 00:08:54.66\00:08:56.30 but we could hear this wonderful beautiful music. 00:08:56.33\00:08:59.70 You know, these young people come from different places 00:08:59.73\00:09:02.87 and different backgrounds. 00:09:02.90\00:09:04.67 But something has brought them together, 00:09:04.71\00:09:07.11 music and Jesus Christ. 00:09:07.14\00:09:09.94 You see, some of these songs 00:09:09.98\00:09:11.78 that praise the Lord are the first exposure 00:09:11.81\00:09:14.58 that they have to Jesus, 00:09:14.62\00:09:16.22 but this is a way 00:09:16.25\00:09:17.59 in which they are coming to learn about Jesus Christ. 00:09:17.62\00:09:20.86 Asian Aid is making it possible 00:09:20.89\00:09:23.12 for these young people and many others 00:09:23.16\00:09:25.53 to be able to dedicate their talents and their lives 00:09:25.56\00:09:28.80 to share the love of Jesus with others. 00:09:28.83\00:09:33.87 Young people using their talents 00:09:33.90\00:09:35.64 for the glory of God 00:09:35.67\00:09:37.11 and witnessing it 00:09:37.14\00:09:38.54 on one of the frontier mission fields 00:09:38.57\00:09:40.44 of the church is a true blessing. 00:09:40.48\00:09:43.45 In fact, the spirituality that emits 00:09:43.48\00:09:45.78 from the students and staff alike 00:09:45.81\00:09:47.82 is very encouraging to me 00:09:47.85\00:09:49.88 and many other visitors 00:09:49.92\00:09:51.25 who have visited this campus over the years. 00:09:51.29\00:09:54.62 It reinforced my belief in the Adventist school system 00:09:54.66\00:09:57.99 and the role education plays in witnessing 00:09:58.03\00:10:01.86 for our Lord and Savior. 00:10:01.90\00:10:04.60 I believe that in the country of Myanmar, 00:10:04.63\00:10:07.64 probably more so than in many other countries 00:10:07.67\00:10:10.11 in the world, education is vital. 00:10:10.14\00:10:12.77 And I believe so, 00:10:12.81\00:10:14.14 because education seems to be the platform 00:10:14.18\00:10:18.48 in which many non-Adventists or Christians 00:10:18.51\00:10:23.15 get to know about Jesus Christ. 00:10:23.18\00:10:25.52 And so from my particular perspective, 00:10:25.55\00:10:27.36 education is vital in this country. 00:10:27.39\00:10:30.13 It is important that we subsidize it, 00:10:30.16\00:10:32.63 it is important that we, 00:10:32.66\00:10:34.53 that we really create the environment 00:10:34.56\00:10:37.40 in which children have an opportunity 00:10:37.43\00:10:40.04 to learn about Christ. 00:10:40.07\00:10:43.37 But a good education is not easy to get, 00:10:43.41\00:10:46.37 particularly in rural areas. 00:10:46.41\00:10:49.48 Especially in a poor country like Myanmar 00:10:49.51\00:10:52.11 where obtaining a good Adventist education 00:10:52.15\00:10:55.05 is not within reach 00:10:55.08\00:10:56.75 of a majority of Adventist families. 00:10:56.79\00:11:00.42 As you know, Asian Aid operates in six countries in Asia, 00:11:00.46\00:11:04.53 and recently into Myanmar. 00:11:04.56\00:11:07.06 Now traditionally, Asian Aid takes the child 00:11:07.10\00:11:09.63 based on need 00:11:09.66\00:11:11.10 and places them in an Adventist school. 00:11:11.13\00:11:14.67 Poverty is a vicious cycle. 00:11:14.70\00:11:16.77 And in Myanmar, 00:11:16.81\00:11:18.17 there is a lot of poverty. 00:11:18.21\00:11:20.34 And the great thing about education 00:11:20.38\00:11:22.61 is that it helps break that cycle, 00:11:22.64\00:11:25.31 that cycle that has an impact 00:11:25.35\00:11:27.22 not just on the child but on the family. 00:11:27.25\00:11:30.55 And this is why sponsorship in a country like Myanmar 00:11:30.59\00:11:34.86 is very, very significant for the total population, 00:11:34.89\00:11:39.39 not just on the child but on the family 00:11:39.43\00:11:42.20 and on the village they come from. 00:11:42.23\00:11:45.17 I truly believe 00:11:45.20\00:11:46.53 that our Adventist schools and seminaries 00:11:46.57\00:11:48.47 not only serve as an educational institution, 00:11:48.50\00:11:51.91 but also as a beacon of light to the community it serves. 00:11:51.94\00:11:57.78 Talking about community, 00:11:57.81\00:11:59.65 I was anxious to visit some of the neighboring villages 00:11:59.68\00:12:03.05 and see for myself, some of the circumstances 00:12:03.08\00:12:06.49 that these students come from. 00:12:06.52\00:12:08.16 I am in a small poor village, deep in the heart of Myanmar. 00:12:37.85\00:12:41.82 You wouldn't know it, 00:12:41.86\00:12:43.19 but our school is actually not too far away. 00:12:43.22\00:12:46.56 In our western comfortable cultures and countries, 00:12:46.59\00:12:49.80 we've probably heard about poverty, 00:12:49.83\00:12:52.07 we've read about it, we've seen pictures 00:12:52.10\00:12:54.50 but unless you are here, 00:12:54.54\00:12:56.27 it's hard to fully grasp and understand what it's like. 00:12:56.30\00:13:01.08 The children you see behind me live in this village. 00:13:01.11\00:13:04.55 Their parents go out and work 00:13:04.58\00:13:06.25 under backbreaking conditions all day. 00:13:06.28\00:13:09.52 That means that these children stay here, 00:13:09.55\00:13:12.09 they don't have the chance to go to school, 00:13:12.12\00:13:14.62 and when they grow up the cycle is perpetuated. 00:13:14.66\00:13:18.36 They can only go to work where their parents worked 00:13:18.39\00:13:21.23 and this continues. 00:13:21.26\00:13:23.00 But Asian Aid is making it possible 00:13:23.03\00:13:25.30 for these young people 00:13:25.33\00:13:26.74 to be able to go to a Christian school, 00:13:26.77\00:13:28.57 get an education, love Jesus 00:13:28.60\00:13:31.77 and then serve others and God. 00:13:31.81\00:13:35.61 I just got a letter
