Child Impact International 00:00:02.50\00:00:04.07 is an organization that gives hope 00:00:04.10\00:00:06.23 and fosters permanent, 00:00:06.27\00:00:07.60 positive change in the lives 00:00:07.64\00:00:09.20 of disadvantaged children 00:00:09.24\00:00:10.67 and their communities. 00:00:10.71\00:00:13.34 Countries include Zambia, 00:00:13.38\00:00:15.54 India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. 00:00:15.58\00:00:20.78 Child Impact's investment 00:00:20.82\00:00:22.15 in the lives of more than 3,500 children 00:00:22.18\00:00:24.89 continues to yield infinite returns. 00:00:24.92\00:00:27.92 Outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:27.96\00:00:30.33 to providing an education 00:00:30.36\00:00:31.76 and a home for deaf and blind children and orphans. 00:00:31.79\00:00:35.43 Above all, Child Impact's sponsors 00:00:35.46\00:00:38.17 give hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:00:38.20\00:00:40.64 A couple of years ago, 00:00:48.21\00:00:49.74 Jean Boonstra associate speaker 00:00:49.78\00:00:51.81 of Voice of Prophecy visited India 00:00:51.85\00:00:54.08 with Child Impact International. 00:00:54.12\00:00:58.52 During her trip to India, Jean met some amazing people 00:00:58.55\00:01:01.86 who are the driving force behind Child Impact's mission 00:01:01.89\00:01:04.79 to reach out to those in need. 00:01:04.83\00:01:06.70 She met with Anita, who was in charge 00:01:06.73\00:01:08.70 of Child Impact's Operation Child Rescue program in India. 00:01:08.73\00:01:12.70 Operation Child Rescue is a program that rescues 00:01:12.73\00:01:15.97 and rehabilitates girls who are trafficked 00:01:16.00\00:01:18.47 and sold as prostitutes in the sex industry. 00:01:18.51\00:01:21.41 Jean got to talk to Anita. 00:01:21.44\00:01:23.14 And she shared with her the challenges 00:01:23.18\00:01:25.01 and the dangers that she and her team face 00:01:25.05\00:01:27.72 in rescuing these girls. 00:01:27.75\00:01:29.18 So, Anita, after you go in, you and your team, 00:01:29.22\00:01:32.52 and you actually go in 00:01:32.55\00:01:33.89 on these rides yourself personally, 00:01:33.92\00:01:36.06 these girls you work with them for a little while, 00:01:36.09\00:01:38.69 then what's the next step? 00:01:38.73\00:01:40.06 How do they transition from that life back 00:01:40.10\00:01:44.87 to somewhat a regular life? 00:01:44.90\00:01:47.44 Once we finish the rescues, we take them 00:01:47.47\00:01:50.11 to the police station for a little bit, 00:01:50.14\00:01:54.01 where their stories are taken, 00:01:54.04\00:01:55.38 their photos are taken, and then we have to take them 00:01:55.41\00:01:59.21 to a government shelter according to the law. 00:01:59.25\00:02:02.78 The first place after their rescue 00:02:02.82\00:02:04.59 has to be the government shelter. 00:02:04.62\00:02:06.52 And these are basically sets of buildings with staff. 00:02:06.55\00:02:12.33 But they're not specific to trafficked victims. 00:02:12.36\00:02:15.43 So you can have abandoned girls there, 00:02:15.46\00:02:17.60 you can have a pregnant mother there, you know, 00:02:17.63\00:02:21.07 premarital, you can have 00:02:21.10\00:02:24.17 someone who has lost their family, 00:02:24.21\00:02:27.28 you can have somebody who's lost, 00:02:27.31\00:02:29.54 got off a train at the wrong stop. 00:02:29.58\00:02:31.58 So just a mixed group of people inside that place 00:02:31.61\00:02:35.35 and these girls are taken to that place. 00:02:35.38\00:02:37.29 Usually, we do the rescues quite late at night. 00:02:37.32\00:02:41.29 So... For that surprise factor. 00:02:41.32\00:02:42.66 Yes. Yeah. 00:02:42.69\00:02:44.03 And so between about 2 or 3am, we end up in this place. 00:02:44.06\00:02:48.00 So the girls as, you know, 00:02:48.03\00:02:50.33 that there are about three gates 00:02:50.37\00:02:53.64 before you get inside the place. 00:02:53.67\00:02:55.30 It's almost like a jail. 00:02:55.34\00:02:57.04 It looks like that at some... 00:02:57.07\00:02:58.67 Sounds intimidating. It is. 00:02:58.71\00:03:00.41 And then, once there, 00:03:00.44\00:03:03.31 the girl's case has to come up for hearing. 00:03:03.35\00:03:06.51 And we have to find out their backgrounds. 00:03:06.55\00:03:09.22 Okay. 00:03:09.25\00:03:10.59 Many times, because it's a government-run shelter, 00:03:10.62\00:03:13.72 the traffickers can end up coming right there. 00:03:13.76\00:03:16.09 Really? 00:03:16.12\00:03:17.46 Yeah, they pose as an aunt, a mother, a sister, a brother, 00:03:17.49\00:03:21.56 the only relative in that place. 00:03:21.60\00:03:24.27 And because they have so many cases 00:03:24.30\00:03:27.14 and so many people turning up, they don't check credentials. 00:03:27.17\00:03:33.14 And so they can come turn up with, you know, 00:03:33.17\00:03:35.84 a false document. 00:03:35.88\00:03:37.65 And we have had many such ones, and they can release the girl, 00:03:37.68\00:03:41.58 or they get to see the girl intimidate her more, 00:03:41.62\00:03:44.39 or promise to get them out of that place 00:03:44.42\00:03:46.52 because by then the girls really want to 00:03:46.55\00:03:47.89 get out of the place. 00:03:47.92\00:03:49.26 They don't speak the local language, 00:03:49.29\00:03:50.83 the food is not something that they like. 00:03:50.86\00:03:53.50 Government-issued food, essentially. 00:03:53.53\00:03:54.86 Yeah. Yes. 00:03:54.90\00:03:56.23 And then, many times they have told us 00:03:56.26\00:03:57.73 there are lice in the food 00:03:57.77\00:03:59.10 or lice in the coffee, you know? 00:03:59.13\00:04:00.47 Oh, my! 00:04:00.50\00:04:01.84 Yeah, and the others are really mean to them 00:04:01.87\00:04:03.67 because they find out that 00:04:03.71\00:04:05.47 they have been involved in sex, commercial sex, 00:04:05.51\00:04:08.51 and they label them the stigma of being in that place. 00:04:08.54\00:04:13.42 You know, you just want to get out there, 00:04:13.45\00:04:14.78 desperate to get out. 00:04:14.82\00:04:16.15 Many times these girls have tried to cut their wrists. 00:04:16.18\00:04:19.45 And we get a call to say, 00:04:19.49\00:04:20.82 "Please come and take the girls, 00:04:20.86\00:04:22.19 you rescued out of this place 00:04:22.22\00:04:23.56 because they disturbing everybody else." 00:04:23.59\00:04:25.56 And you go there, and they say, 00:04:25.59\00:04:27.16 "We just want to go out of this place. 00:04:27.20\00:04:28.63 The brothel was better." 00:04:28.66\00:04:30.40 You know, so harsh, so harsh. Sounds horrible. 00:04:30.43\00:04:33.13 How many days or how much time 00:04:33.17\00:04:35.10 are they're in this place, generally? 00:04:35.14\00:04:37.17 Well, it can be anything 00:04:37.21\00:04:38.54 between two months to two years. 00:04:38.57\00:04:40.78 Wow! 00:04:40.81\00:04:42.51 Are they cared for their physical needs? 00:04:42.54\00:04:45.18 I mean... Oh, yes. 00:04:45.21\00:04:46.55 I mean, I hate to be very... 00:04:46.58\00:04:49.18 I hate to talk about it. 00:04:49.22\00:04:50.69 But the life they were living in the brothel, 00:04:50.72\00:04:53.29 they had a lot of physical injuries, I assume. 00:04:53.32\00:04:55.82 Yes. 00:04:55.86\00:04:57.19 Obviously, emotional, mental 00:04:57.23\00:04:58.56 are those things addressed at all in the government home? 00:04:58.59\00:05:03.26 The government does provide a shelter so there is food. 00:05:03.30\00:05:07.20 There is a sense of... 00:05:07.24\00:05:09.64 They have water and clothes and people talk to them, 00:05:09.67\00:05:14.01 but the abuse sometimes is in different ways. 00:05:14.04\00:05:16.85 There's a lot of sexual abuse 00:05:16.88\00:05:18.21 that happens within those shelters, 00:05:18.25\00:05:20.12 especially to the younger children. 00:05:20.15\00:05:22.68 We did a rescue of boys who had been trafficked 00:05:22.72\00:05:25.99 from Bihar to Bangalore for labor, 00:05:26.02\00:05:29.66 and some of these boys were aged 9 to 12. 00:05:29.69\00:05:33.33 And when we visited them about a week later, 00:05:33.36\00:05:36.36 a couple of them said they didn't like 00:05:36.40\00:05:38.53 what older boys were doing to them, 00:05:38.57\00:05:40.80 which is implying sexual abuse inside a government shelter 00:05:40.84\00:05:44.87 that is meant to be a protective place. 00:05:44.91\00:05:48.21 It sounds like it's taking them 00:05:48.24\00:05:50.95 from a bad situation and putting them 00:05:50.98\00:05:54.35 in a so-so situation 00:05:54.38\00:05:56.18 and in that specific case, a worse situation. 00:05:56.22\00:05:58.85 It's true. 00:05:58.89\00:06:00.22 So it doesn't sound like it's an answer. 00:06:00.26\00:06:02.06 But you also don't have a choice. 00:06:02.09\00:06:04.26 Yes. 00:06:04.29\00:06:05.63 So, Anita, you are a Christian, 00:06:05.66\00:06:09.96 what difference would it make to be able to take these girls 00:06:10.00\00:06:13.23 and put them in a Christian facility 00:06:13.27\00:06:15.80 where they were nurtured and cared for specifically? 00:06:15.84\00:06:20.41 Now, Jean, you're talking about 00:06:20.44\00:06:21.78 a vision that I have for these girls, 00:06:21.81\00:06:25.21 every girl who's rescued. 00:06:25.25\00:06:27.28 You know, the sense of hopelessness 00:06:27.32\00:06:28.65 inside that place 00:06:28.68\00:06:30.02 when we walk into those brothels 00:06:30.05\00:06:31.39 or when we go into those places 00:06:31.42\00:06:33.99 where they're being forced to hide 00:06:34.02\00:06:36.02 or to overwork. 00:06:36.06\00:06:39.16 There is just a deep sense of despair 00:06:39.19\00:06:42.66 and a darkness that is so obvious to us. 00:06:42.70\00:06:45.83 And when we get them out of that place, 00:06:45.87\00:06:48.40 what we want to give them to replace 00:06:48.44\00:06:50.24 that is the sense of hope that God cares about them 00:06:50.27\00:06:54.08 that there is a future that He can build 00:06:54.11\00:06:56.95 and that He can restore 00:06:56.98\00:06:58.31 and that no matter what has happened to them, 00:06:58.35\00:07:01.15 they are still made in the image of God 00:07:01.18\00:07:03.22 and nobody can destroy that. 00:07:03.25\00:07:05.45 And nothing can mar that. 00:07:05.49\00:07:09.52 But you see, they've never been told that 00:07:09.56\00:07:12.09 they've been so abused inside that place 00:07:12.13\00:07:15.43 that they couldn't care about themselves. 00:07:15.46\00:07:18.50 So we in our home, we'll have that opportunity 00:07:18.53\00:07:22.77 right from the start to just love on them, 00:07:22.80\00:07:26.01 to be able to give them that sense of hope 00:07:26.04\00:07:30.01 that they need not fear anymore, 00:07:30.05\00:07:31.91 they're not in a place 00:07:31.95\00:07:34.25 that anyone's going to abuse them. 00:07:34.28\00:07:36.42 In fact, they're going to receive the opposite 00:07:36.45\00:07:38.45 that there will be a sense of freedom 00:07:38.49\00:07:40.76 within that place where they can make choices. 00:07:40.79\00:07:44.53 And those choices will be guided 00:07:44.56\00:07:47.53 by good counseling and that they will have options 00:07:47.56\00:07:51.10 whether they learn a new trade or whether they go back 00:07:51.13\00:07:53.74 to visit family, it will all be under careful observation 00:07:53.77\00:07:59.54 and supervision to ensure that 00:07:59.57\00:08:01.21 the best happens for these girls. 00:08:01.24\00:08:04.51 I think part of the story that you tell that 00:08:04.55\00:08:07.78 really breaks my heart is when you share 00:08:07.82\00:08:10.32 how these girls, once they're rescued, 00:08:10.35\00:08:12.82 some of them, 00:08:12.85\00:08:14.19 a certain percentage of them do go back 00:08:14.22\00:08:16.89 to that way of life because of the shame 00:08:16.93\00:08:18.89 because they don't feel an option. 00:08:18.93\00:08:22.20 Have you seen the difference 00:08:22.23\00:08:25.03 that Christ makes for the girls? 00:08:25.07\00:08:27.27 Is that the difference that keeps them 00:08:27.30\00:08:29.60 from going back to their lifestyle? 00:08:29.64\00:08:32.07 I think it is the main difference, Jean. 00:08:32.11\00:08:35.54 I mean, to be able to pray with the girls, 00:08:35.58\00:08:37.91 and we do pray with the girls. 00:08:37.95\00:08:39.85 You know, that I told you we get some private time 00:08:39.88\00:08:42.58 either at the police station 00:08:42.62\00:08:43.95 or at the brothel before we take them 00:08:43.99\00:08:46.19 to the government shelter. 00:08:46.22\00:08:47.56 We almost always talk to them about God and pray with them. 00:08:47.59\00:08:51.49 Because that's the only private time 00:08:51.53\00:08:53.66 we'll get before we are under supervised visits 00:08:53.70\00:08:57.77 in the government shelter. 00:08:57.80\00:08:59.27 But if you had a home, 00:08:59.30\00:09:01.00 we can pray with them every day, 00:09:01.04\00:09:02.50 we can pray with them and counsel them, 00:09:02.54\00:09:04.47 and tell them about a God who loves them, 00:09:04.51\00:09:07.08 and help them to come to terms with that. 00:09:07.11\00:09:09.11 I mean, many of them ask us, 00:09:09.14\00:09:11.31 "Why do you want to do this for us?" 00:09:11.35\00:09:13.85 You know, "Why would you be here?" 00:09:13.88\00:09:15.32 Because I always tell them, "I'm a mother, myself. 00:09:15.35\00:09:18.42 And I have two daughters, I know what it feels like 00:09:18.45\00:09:21.62 to be inside this place, 00:09:21.66\00:09:23.76 wondering what's going to happen next." 00:09:23.79\00:09:26.19 And they always say, "Why do you take this risk?" 00:09:26.23\00:09:28.86 And I tell them, it's because God has called 00:09:28.90\00:09:32.17 some of us to these things 00:09:32.20\00:09:33.67 and because it's the God who took a risk for us. 00:09:33.70\00:09:36.50 I mean, that He came for us that 00:09:36.54\00:09:38.91 we might have a life that is free. 00:09:38.94\00:09:41.08 And, you know, they are so open 00:09:41.11\00:09:44.51 to listening to the gospel, to knowing, 00:09:44.55\00:09:47.85 but the most important thing, 00:09:47.88\00:09:49.25 Jean, is for them to see the gospel in action. 00:09:49.28\00:09:52.62 And that's what we manage to do there. 00:09:52.65\00:09:54.99 Okay. 00:09:55.02\00:09:56.36 But what drives you each and every day to continue, 00:09:56.39\00:09:59.96 to put your own personal life in danger? 00:10:00.00\00:10:02.86 You're on the front lines doing this, 00:10:02.90\00:10:04.60 and I imagine your husband worries. 00:10:04.63\00:10:07.70 What keeps you going to do this? 00:10:07.74\00:10:11.87 I think this the call that God had on my life 00:10:11.91\00:10:14.78 and which I realized about 10 years ago 00:10:14.81\00:10:17.58 when I went out on my first rescue mission, 00:10:17.61\00:10:21.28 just the thought of these girls out there and that... 00:10:21.32\00:10:26.92 You know, something might happen to them, 00:10:26.96\00:10:28.32 that they may never hear about a God who loves them. 00:10:28.36\00:10:32.29 Being an Indian woman, myself, a mother of daughters, 00:10:32.33\00:10:37.07 just wanting to do the best that we can for these girls. 00:10:37.10\00:10:42.17 It's funny, I never was a brave 00:10:42.20\00:10:44.07 or courageous person growing up. 00:10:44.11\00:10:45.91 In fact, I was very timid... 00:10:45.94\00:10:47.28 I can't believe it. Very timid, very shy. 00:10:47.31\00:10:49.61 Yeah. 00:10:49.64\00:10:50.98 I hated standing up in front of anything. 00:10:51.01\00:10:53.28 And I still am very afraid before we go on a rescue. 00:10:53.31\00:10:57.09 Everybody knows that I have my private time. 00:10:57.12\00:11:00.09 But when we finish the prayer 00:11:00.12\00:11:02.42 before the raiding team is out of the door, 00:11:02.46\00:11:06.86 I know that God has gone before us, 00:11:06.90\00:11:08.86 and He's already there. 00:11:08.90\00:11:10.37 I mean, there are times, Jean, that we've searched 00:11:10.40\00:11:13.74 the building for the girls, 00:11:13.77\00:11:15.30 and we just don't know where they've hidden them. 00:11:15.34\00:11:17.97 And somehow God shows us 00:11:18.01\00:11:20.88 where that hidden place is, you know, 00:11:20.91\00:11:22.48 whether it's a hole in the wall that has been sealed up, 00:11:22.51\00:11:26.98 and we have to break through that 00:11:27.02\00:11:28.48 or whether it's a hotel reception desk, 00:11:28.52\00:11:32.85 and you open the drawer and it's a staircase... 00:11:32.89\00:11:34.76 Really? Wow. 00:11:34.79\00:11:36.12 Into a seller where the girls have been pushed. 00:11:36.16\00:11:38.79 It is God because, you know, none of us have had 00:11:38.83\00:11:41.96 any kind of investigative training. 00:11:42.00\00:11:44.20 And when God shows up there, we know that we keep going on. 00:11:44.23\00:11:49.30 He's going before you. Yes. 00:11:49.34\00:11:50.77 And you're trusting in Him. Yes. 00:11:50.81\00:11:53.07 Well, I have a hard time 00:11:53.11\00:11:54.44 imagining you as a timid young girl. 00:11:54.48\00:11:57.05 You're a great inspiration to myself 00:11:57.08\00:11:59.65 and many who have met you, I know you are. 00:11:59.68\00:12:02.98 Well, I just praise God that you 00:12:03.02\00:12:05.02 and Operation Child Rescue are doing, 00:12:05.05\00:12:07.79 what you're doing, Anita, that you are facing 00:12:07.82\00:12:09.82 these problems, 00:12:09.86\00:12:11.19 that you're there dealing with it. 00:12:11.23\00:12:14.13 You know, it's really hard for those of us 00:12:14.16\00:12:16.63 who don't see it with our own eyes 00:12:16.67\00:12:19.07 to really comprehend the level of danger, 00:12:19.10\00:12:24.67 the horrors that these children go through. 00:12:24.71\00:12:27.41 But I just thank you for what you're doing 00:12:27.44\00:12:29.44 for the ministry that you have. 00:12:29.48\00:12:32.21 Anita, it's always a pleasure visiting with you. 00:12:32.25\00:12:34.72 Thank you.
