00:02:36.35\00:02:39.59 Well, Jean, it's lovely to meet you again. 00:02:39.62\00:02:42.49 As the name suggests, 00:02:42.52\00:02:43.86 Operation Rescue is about rescuing women, 00:02:43.89\00:02:46.86 children, babies, 00:02:46.90\00:02:48.70 who have been subjected to the worst kind of abuse 00:02:48.73\00:02:51.50 and who have been trafficked for different reasons. 00:02:51.53\00:02:55.14 It could be children 00:02:55.17\00:02:56.60 who are being forced to beg on the streets 00:02:56.64\00:02:58.84 or it could be children who are being forced 00:02:58.87\00:03:01.04 to work in hazardous industries like bad manufacturing, 00:03:01.08\00:03:06.48 basically working long hours and against their will 00:03:06.51\00:03:10.69 or it could be girls and women 00:03:10.72\00:03:12.22 who are traffic to the worst of the brothels 00:03:12.25\00:03:15.46 locked inside and forced to see customers 00:03:15.49\00:03:18.39 every day against their will. 00:03:18.43\00:03:21.80 And this is a global issue 00:03:21.83\00:03:24.10 but you are headquartered in Bangalore, India. 00:03:24.13\00:03:28.44 Tell me how long have you been doing this work 00:03:28.47\00:03:30.17 yourself personally? 00:03:30.21\00:03:31.97 Well, it started about 10 years ago. 00:03:32.01\00:03:33.78 So 10 years is a good time to say, 00:03:33.81\00:03:35.91 I have been doing this work. 00:03:35.94\00:03:38.25 We started off basically 00:03:38.28\00:03:39.81 looking at the whole issue of trafficking 00:03:39.85\00:03:42.92 and whether it existed in Bangalore 00:03:42.95\00:03:45.35 and what were children being trafficked for 00:03:45.39\00:03:48.49 and we've ended up now doing rescues 00:03:48.52\00:03:50.69 with the police 00:03:50.73\00:03:52.73 and finding rehabilitation options 00:03:52.76\00:03:55.50 for those whom we rescue. 00:03:55.53\00:03:57.33 We also do a little bit of prevention 00:03:57.37\00:03:59.97 in areas where we find more children 00:04:00.00\00:04:02.07 going missing or more girls being recruited for jobs 00:04:02.10\00:04:05.84 to prevent that from happening. 00:04:05.87\00:04:09.54 You know, it's hard to hear the stories 00:04:09.58\00:04:12.31 of what you're doing because you're dealing 00:04:12.35\00:04:14.68 with some really, really sad situations. 00:04:14.72\00:04:18.09 Children are in danger, young women are in danger. 00:04:18.12\00:04:21.59 Let's talk for a minute about the young girls, 00:04:21.62\00:04:24.49 they are recruited from rural areas typically, 00:04:24.53\00:04:27.66 tell us a little bit about how did they get recruited 00:04:27.70\00:04:30.23 and what age are these girls? 00:04:30.27\00:04:32.40 Well, when we first started work, 00:04:32.43\00:04:34.50 and when we first started rescues, the girls were... 00:04:34.54\00:04:37.14 The average age was about 17. 00:04:37.17\00:04:40.54 But today, the girls are much younger, 00:04:40.58\00:04:43.18 and the average age is close to 14. 00:04:43.21\00:04:46.82 So you know, really young girls 00:04:46.85\00:04:49.28 being recruited out of schools even, 00:04:49.32\00:04:53.15 you asked me about why they get recruited? 00:04:53.19\00:04:56.19 Well, it's a combination of a number of factors, 00:04:56.22\00:04:59.59 poverty being the number one factor 00:04:59.63\00:05:02.63 that makes them vulnerable to this. 00:05:02.66\00:05:04.50 So they are very poor. 00:05:04.53\00:05:06.80 They don't know about the issue of trafficking. 00:05:06.84\00:05:10.61 Usually they don't have a skill and so they can't get jobs, 00:05:10.64\00:05:14.11 or they're in school 00:05:14.14\00:05:15.68 but drop out for different reasons, 00:05:15.71\00:05:17.71 either to look after a sibling, or a parent not being well, 00:05:17.75\00:05:21.58 or the school just not being important enough for them 00:05:21.62\00:05:25.75 to complete education 00:05:25.79\00:05:27.12 and so they're pulled out of school to get married. 00:05:27.16\00:05:29.96 And it's at this time that the traffickers 00:05:29.99\00:05:32.66 prey on these vulnerabilities. 00:05:32.69\00:05:34.73 You know, the girl is at home, 00:05:34.76\00:05:36.20 or the girl is looking for a job, 00:05:36.23\00:05:39.20 or the girl just wants to get out 00:05:39.23\00:05:41.14 of this poverty situation, 00:05:41.17\00:05:43.00 and they prey on this 00:05:43.04\00:05:44.37 and will go in and recruit them. 00:05:44.41\00:05:46.27 Sometimes they send in people in, 00:05:46.31\00:05:48.68 you know, fall in love with them 00:05:48.71\00:05:50.21 and promise a better life to marry them. 00:05:50.25\00:05:53.52 Sometimes they offer them jobs, 00:05:53.55\00:05:55.18 they will come in and say we will get you a job. 00:05:55.22\00:05:58.82 And because they're so naive 00:05:58.85\00:06:01.22 and have no knowledge of what this is, 00:06:01.26\00:06:03.83 they will go with them. 00:06:03.86\00:06:05.19 But, of course, the job doesn't exist 00:06:05.23\00:06:06.56 on the other side or it exists in a much, 00:06:06.59\00:06:08.56 much worse way than they would have ever thought. 00:06:08.60\00:06:11.53 And sometimes when they take babies, 00:06:11.57\00:06:14.70 they kidnap them. 00:06:14.74\00:06:16.07 So the younger children... 00:06:16.10\00:06:17.61 So just snatched from their mothers 00:06:17.64\00:06:19.61 or their homes? 00:06:19.64\00:06:20.98 Yes, that's from hospitals even. 00:06:21.01\00:06:22.78 You know, they've taken babies, kidnap babies from hospitals 00:06:22.81\00:06:25.28 or they take babies from orphanages 00:06:25.31\00:06:29.72 or young children 00:06:29.75\00:06:31.09 and they will sell them to the begging syndicates. 00:06:31.12\00:06:33.36 Okay. 00:06:33.39\00:06:34.72 That put these children out on the street. 00:06:34.76\00:06:36.96 And they have to bring in a certain amount of money 00:06:36.99\00:06:39.16 every day. 00:06:39.19\00:06:41.36 So these young girls 00:06:41.40\00:06:43.03 are willing to take sort of a risk 00:06:43.06\00:06:45.73 because they're vulnerable, 00:06:45.77\00:06:47.70 they're a little bit naive to the danger. 00:06:47.74\00:06:50.54 They're looking to help their family 00:06:50.57\00:06:52.44 and or to support themselves, 00:06:52.47\00:06:54.81 a number of factors. 00:06:54.84\00:06:56.81 As you go in and you actually rescue girls 00:06:56.85\00:06:59.75 from these brothels, 00:06:59.78\00:07:01.25 just walk us through a little bit 00:07:01.28\00:07:02.92 how that process works? 00:07:02.95\00:07:04.39 I have learned over the years 00:07:07.49\00:07:10.26 not to breakdown to react in the right ways. 00:07:10.29\00:07:13.70 My first time inside a brothel, I was terrified 00:07:13.73\00:07:16.50 because I didn't expect what we saw. 00:07:16.53\00:07:19.37 You know, usually these places are, 00:07:19.40\00:07:21.67 they select places that are easy hiding places, 00:07:21.70\00:07:26.07 so you have number of rooms inside the main entrance. 00:07:26.11\00:07:29.44 If it's a house or a building, 00:07:29.48\00:07:31.21 it will have a number of rooms 00:07:31.25\00:07:33.21 and individual rooms 00:07:33.25\00:07:35.08 that are used for commercial sex. 00:07:35.12\00:07:38.55 So when we enter these places, 00:07:38.59\00:07:40.06 we often have to bust the front door 00:07:40.09\00:07:42.46 or we have to enter in without them knowing it. 00:07:42.49\00:07:45.89 So they're not alerted to it. Okay. 00:07:45.93\00:07:48.26 We usually have a team of about 10 or 12 00:07:48.30\00:07:51.17 including a few police. 00:07:51.20\00:07:53.67 We run inside the place, 00:07:53.70\00:07:55.04 we're always looking to grab the girls 00:07:55.07\00:07:57.14 before they're hidden or before they're forced 00:07:57.17\00:07:59.94 into some hiding place. 00:07:59.97\00:08:02.08 So surprise is key? 00:08:02.11\00:08:04.05 Surprise is key, safety for ourselves. 00:08:04.08\00:08:07.72 We're looking out for an escape route 00:08:07.75\00:08:10.19 in case something goes wrong, 00:08:10.22\00:08:12.55 and we all are just stuck inside that place. 00:08:12.59\00:08:15.82 The girls themselves are taken by surprise. 00:08:15.86\00:08:19.59 Oftentimes they're scared, they will cry, 00:08:19.63\00:08:22.56 there's a lot of drama that happens 00:08:22.60\00:08:25.17 inside that the police are shouting, 00:08:25.20\00:08:26.77 the traffickers are trying to get out, 00:08:26.80\00:08:28.54 escape, you know, 00:08:28.57\00:08:29.90 they're trying to jump out of some place. 00:08:29.94\00:08:32.21 And then the girls themselves, 00:08:32.24\00:08:34.71 you know, they're crying, wondering what's gonna happen. 00:08:34.74\00:08:38.81 At that point, we can't say that they are happy to see us 00:08:38.85\00:08:41.82 because they don't know who we are. 00:08:41.85\00:08:43.72 Are they questioning 00:08:43.75\00:08:45.25 that you're there to help them some often times? 00:08:45.29\00:08:47.62 Yes. Yes. Okay. 00:08:47.66\00:08:48.99 But the moment that initial drama is over, 00:08:49.02\00:08:52.13 then we get some quiet time 00:08:52.16\00:08:54.86 to tell them who we are, and why we're there, 00:08:54.90\00:08:58.03 and that we really are interested 00:08:58.07\00:09:00.60 in their long term future. 00:09:00.64\00:09:02.24 So it's not about now, it's about the future, 00:09:02.27\00:09:05.67 and that we want to see them out of this life. 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.64 And many of them will breakdown 00:09:07.68\00:09:09.71 and cry and tell you the reason why they're there. 00:09:09.74\00:09:12.35 You know, they will say, we were so poor, 00:09:12.38\00:09:14.32 so naive, we didn't know, we were promised a job. 00:09:14.35\00:09:17.79 And the story is almost the same 00:09:17.82\00:09:20.46 again and again and again. 00:09:20.49\00:09:21.82 Over and over again. 00:09:21.86\00:09:23.19 Yeah. It's... 00:09:23.22\00:09:24.56 You wonder how could people be like this when... 00:09:24.59\00:09:26.59 But you'd realize that 00:09:26.63\00:09:27.96 they are all from different places, 00:09:28.00\00:09:29.73 even if they were, say, from Bangladesh 00:09:29.76\00:09:31.73 and we're seeing increasing number of girls 00:09:31.77\00:09:33.70 from Bangladesh and Nepal in Bangalore. 00:09:33.74\00:09:36.07 Brought into Bangalore. 00:09:36.10\00:09:37.44 Yes. Okay. 00:09:37.47\00:09:39.07 They don't know each other 00:09:39.11\00:09:40.78 and they're all recruited in the same way. 00:09:40.81\00:09:44.15 You know, somebody marries them, 00:09:44.18\00:09:45.51 somebody promises them a job, brings them across the border, 00:09:45.55\00:09:48.82 puts them on a train, 00:09:48.85\00:09:50.55 tells them they're going for a job in a massage parlor, 00:09:50.59\00:09:53.15 beauty parlor, as a housemaid, 00:09:53.19\00:09:55.96 and they end up in this building. 00:09:55.99\00:09:58.59 So the city of Bangalore, 00:09:58.63\00:09:59.96 it's an absolutely beautiful city. 00:10:00.00\00:10:02.26 It's an IT hub, it's a very, 00:10:02.30\00:10:04.37 what I noticed as a visitor 00:10:04.40\00:10:06.10 anyway coming to visit your city of Bangalore. 00:10:06.13\00:10:08.64 It's got a beautiful mix of modern, 00:10:08.67\00:10:11.57 with the IT industry, and rich history 00:10:11.61\00:10:14.61 and a lovely climate. 00:10:14.64\00:10:15.98 It's absolutely a wonderful place. 00:10:16.01\00:10:18.95 So in that city, 00:10:18.98\00:10:20.52 how do you then, before you make these raids, 00:10:20.55\00:10:22.75 how do you learn and work 00:10:22.78\00:10:25.05 to find out where these brothels are? 00:10:25.09\00:10:27.06 How do you make those inroads before you have a rescue? 00:10:27.09\00:10:31.13 We have them working to develop these contacts. 00:10:31.16\00:10:34.73 Like you said, on the surface it is a beautiful city. 00:10:34.76\00:10:38.67 We don't have a red-light district 00:10:38.70\00:10:40.94 unlike, you know, Mumbai and Calcutta, 00:10:40.97\00:10:42.74 they have areas where, you know, 00:10:42.77\00:10:44.64 these girls are being taken and where sex is offered, 00:10:44.67\00:10:48.08 but Bangalore doesn't have that. 00:10:48.11\00:10:51.15 It used to be more of a pensioners paradise 00:10:51.18\00:10:53.31 till it became an IT city. 00:10:53.35\00:10:54.85 Okay. 00:10:54.88\00:10:56.22 So everything is very hidden, 00:10:56.25\00:10:58.59 which makes it more difficult for us 00:10:58.62\00:10:59.99 because we have to search, 00:11:00.02\00:11:01.96 we really have to look out 00:11:01.99\00:11:03.56 for places where these girls are being hidden, 00:11:03.59\00:11:05.46 where they're brought in. 00:11:05.49\00:11:06.83 So we have a team of investigators 00:11:06.86\00:11:10.63 whose job is to befriend the underworld, 00:11:10.67\00:11:13.74 you know, befriend pimps, 00:11:13.77\00:11:15.10 befriend auto rickshaw drivers who will transport these girls, 00:11:15.14\00:11:19.44 befriend people 00:11:19.47\00:11:21.98 that work in the really shady hotels 00:11:22.01\00:11:25.91 where the girls are pimped often. 00:11:25.95\00:11:28.92 And we sometimes go in as customers and clients, 00:11:28.95\00:11:32.02 sometimes as pimps ourselves 00:11:32.05\00:11:34.39 to try and access the information 00:11:34.42\00:11:36.76 as to where these girls are being held. 00:11:36.79\00:11:39.16 And once we have that information 00:11:39.19\00:11:40.70 and we know for sure that in this building 00:11:40.73\00:11:43.70 trafficking is held... 00:11:43.73\00:11:45.07 You know, a trafficked girl is being held 00:11:45.10\00:11:46.87 or a brothel is being run, 00:11:46.90\00:11:48.40 then we go to the police with that information. 00:11:48.44\00:11:50.87 Completely chartered out plan of rescue 00:11:50.91\00:11:54.38 including escape routes, entry, 00:11:54.41\00:11:57.51 number of people inside the building, 00:11:57.55\00:11:59.98 the number of girls, their approximate ages, 00:12:00.02\00:12:03.55 as much of... 00:12:03.59\00:12:04.92 As much information as we can. 00:12:04.95\00:12:06.62 Because before we go into the rescue, 00:12:06.65\00:12:09.46 we're not gonna get another opportunity 00:12:09.49\00:12:11.56 or the police can't go in before the rescue 00:12:11.59\00:12:15.00 because there will be an alert. 00:12:15.03\00:12:17.73 So you sort of have one chance to do it right 00:12:17.77\00:12:20.60 and because there are no second chances? 00:12:20.64\00:12:22.47 Yes.
