00:00:57.55\00:00:59.85 deaf and the blind children giving them a sense of place, 00:00:59.89\00:01:03.76 a home but above all, 00:01:03.79\00:01:05.56 Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:05.59\00:01:08.60 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:08.63\00:01:11.93 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:11.97\00:01:14.64 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:14.67\00:01:16.30 Our television series Hope in Motion 00:01:19.84\00:01:22.44 has been a big success, 00:01:22.48\00:01:24.28 and we want to continue to share with you 00:01:24.31\00:01:27.05 some of the field stories 00:01:27.08\00:01:28.78 that we have filmed over the years. 00:01:28.82\00:01:31.09 So just from time to time it may refer to Asian Aid 00:01:31.12\00:01:35.39 as we reflect on these great stories 00:01:35.42\00:01:38.49 as we share them with you. 00:01:38.53\00:01:39.86 Nepal, sandwiched between two Asian giants 00:01:43.83\00:01:46.74 China and India 00:01:46.77\00:01:48.10 is a landlocked sovereign state in the Himalayas. 00:01:48.14\00:01:51.11 The mountain range in the north 00:01:51.14\00:01:52.61 is home to eight of the world's tallest mountain peaks, 00:01:52.64\00:01:55.88 including the highest point on earth, Mount Everest, 00:01:55.91\00:01:58.81 thus making it popular for mountaineering. 00:01:58.85\00:02:01.62 Hinduism is practiced by over 80% of the population 00:02:01.65\00:02:05.35 making it the country 00:02:05.39\00:02:06.72 with the highest percentage of Hindus. 00:02:06.76\00:02:08.89 With the birthplace of Buddha located in this region, 00:02:08.92\00:02:11.69 Nepal is also historically linked with Buddhism 00:02:11.73\00:02:14.80 making it culturally very rich. 00:02:14.83\00:02:17.33 However, Nepal is also economically challenged 00:02:17.37\00:02:20.80 and is home to some of the poorest people 00:02:20.84\00:02:22.87 on the planet. 00:02:22.90\00:02:24.24 In this economically backward environment 00:02:24.27\00:02:26.37 and harsh terrain 00:02:26.41\00:02:27.74 where infrastructure and transport is unavailable, 00:02:27.78\00:02:30.71 women become the beast of burden. 00:02:30.75\00:02:33.31 Economic difficulties and cultural perceptions 00:02:33.35\00:02:36.15 have made women of Nepal suffer silently. 00:02:36.18\00:02:39.12 The condition is called uterine prolapse. 00:02:39.15\00:02:43.53 Yes, this is something very interesting 00:02:43.56\00:02:44.89 because this condition of uterus prolapse 00:02:44.93\00:02:47.36 is not so common in most of the countries. 00:02:47.40\00:02:50.27 But interestingly in Nepal 00:02:50.30\00:02:52.77 it is very common to see uterus prolapse in women. 00:02:52.80\00:02:57.11 And the reason, we don't know exactly the reason, 00:02:57.14\00:02:59.41 but over here the ladies have to carry a lot of weight, 00:02:59.44\00:03:04.35 so weight carrying also provide 00:03:04.38\00:03:07.52 the incidents of prolapse more high, 00:03:07.55\00:03:11.39 also having more children 00:03:11.42\00:03:13.22 also provide more incidents of having this problem. 00:03:13.25\00:03:17.49 So it is multi-factorial, 00:03:17.53\00:03:20.23 we cannot point to only one thing. 00:03:20.26\00:03:23.50 But what we know is that in Nepal, 00:03:23.53\00:03:26.33 it is very common to have this problem. 00:03:26.37\00:03:29.30 Uterine prolapse is a condition in women 00:03:29.34\00:03:31.71 where their uterus just falls off their body. 00:03:31.74\00:03:34.64 We learn that one of the main reasons 00:03:34.68\00:03:36.48 women get prolapsed 00:03:36.51\00:03:37.88 is because they are forced to carry heavy loads. 00:03:37.91\00:03:40.68 Sometimes around 50 kilos strapped around their forehead 00:03:40.72\00:03:44.25 pressing down on their neck. 00:03:44.29\00:03:45.85 Often they have to continue with this heavy labor 00:03:45.89\00:03:48.02 right after childbirth. 00:03:48.06\00:03:49.82 The stress and pressure this puts on their lower back 00:03:49.86\00:03:52.36 is so dangerous, 00:03:52.39\00:03:53.73 and their delicate bodies cannot support their uterus. 00:03:53.76\00:03:57.17 We cannot go into the detail of what is the condition 00:03:57.20\00:04:00.44 but having this condition affect the woman 00:04:00.47\00:04:03.41 in an extreme way, 00:04:03.44\00:04:06.54 to the extreme that sometimes the husband leave them 00:04:06.57\00:04:10.81 because of the marital problem that they may have. 00:04:10.85\00:04:14.55 So yes, it is a very 00:04:14.58\00:04:17.12 incapacitating condition for the woman 00:04:17.15\00:04:19.29 and affects not only the woman but also the entire family. 00:04:19.32\00:04:23.32 In this patriarchal society, women suffering from prolapse 00:04:23.36\00:04:26.76 are ashamed for their condition, 00:04:26.80\00:04:28.66 and they don't want to come forward 00:04:28.70\00:04:30.03 and suffer in silence for decades. 00:04:30.07\00:04:32.33 The psychological impact this has on their wellbeing 00:04:32.37\00:04:35.27 affects their already battered physical condition. 00:04:35.30\00:04:38.41 Thousands go undetected and when they are discovered, 00:04:38.44\00:04:41.51 they become outcasts, excluded, 00:04:41.54\00:04:43.85 and deserted by their husbands and families. 00:04:43.88\00:04:48.58 Today, women suffering from uterine prolapse 00:04:48.62\00:04:51.19 have hope. 00:04:51.22\00:04:52.55 Over the last 10 years, 00:04:52.59\00:04:53.92 Child Impact International has funded a program 00:04:53.96\00:04:56.59 along with Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:04:56.62\00:04:58.69 to identify these women wherever they are 00:04:58.73\00:05:01.43 and facilitate surgeries 00:05:01.46\00:05:03.06 and provide much needed preventive health education. 00:05:03.10\00:05:06.53 Well, we're partnering with Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:05:06.57\00:05:09.20 because we truly believe 00:05:09.24\00:05:10.87 they're doing a wonderful job in the community. 00:05:10.91\00:05:14.24 It's the only Adventist hospital in Nepal. 00:05:14.28\00:05:17.81 It's a critical part of the church in Nepal. 00:05:17.85\00:05:21.35 And they now have the facilities 00:05:21.38\00:05:25.25 to do the prolapse operations. 00:05:25.29\00:05:28.52 And so our funding program is very valuable to them 00:05:28.56\00:05:33.36 because they have plenty of capacity. 00:05:33.40\00:05:35.73 And so for us, it's very rewarding 00:05:35.76\00:05:39.77 not only to make the change of lives with the women, 00:05:39.80\00:05:45.24 but also we're able to help the institution 00:05:45.27\00:05:48.68 in gaining work and doing work in the community. 00:05:48.71\00:05:52.81 Here at the hospital, 00:05:52.85\00:05:54.78 we have done a lot of prolapse operations. 00:05:54.82\00:05:57.55 I think... 00:05:57.59\00:05:58.92 I forget how many years we've been doing it now, 00:05:58.95\00:06:00.56 maybe 10 or 11 years, but during that time, 00:06:00.59\00:06:03.29 we have now operated on between 8,000 to 9,000 ladies. 00:06:03.32\00:06:07.20 And to see the difference it makes, 00:06:07.23\00:06:09.60 you know, I just can't imagine 00:06:09.63\00:06:13.90 how these women like to spend one... 00:06:13.94\00:06:15.84 I remember one lady, she told us 00:06:15.87\00:06:17.67 that she had been walking around with this prolapse 00:06:17.71\00:06:20.41 hanging out of her body for 50 years. 00:06:20.44\00:06:23.28 All throughout its history, 00:06:29.65\00:06:31.15 Scheer Memorial Hospital has been privileged 00:06:31.19\00:06:33.56 to host a number of medical professionals from abroad 00:06:33.59\00:06:36.69 who volunteer their time and expertise conducting camps. 00:06:36.73\00:06:40.40 This has benefited thousands of people 00:06:40.43\00:06:42.46 from the local community, especially women. 00:06:42.50\00:06:45.23 This week, a group from Sydney Adventist Hospital 00:06:45.27\00:06:48.07 from Sydney, Australia 00:06:48.10\00:06:49.44 is here conducting prolapse operations. 00:06:49.47\00:06:52.17 If you save these women have it fixed, 00:06:52.21\00:06:54.68 not have that prolapse any more, they're so happy. 00:06:54.71\00:06:57.81 They hug us, they kiss us, they want to shake our hand, 00:06:57.85\00:07:01.28 they want to touch us, 00:07:01.32\00:07:02.65 and it's just humbling, very humbling 00:07:02.68\00:07:06.65 because we're so grateful now within our society 00:07:06.69\00:07:10.66 that you just don't realize how hard it is for them here 00:07:10.69\00:07:15.33 to be working under the circumstances 00:07:15.36\00:07:17.50 they got to work under. 00:07:17.53\00:07:20.30 Karen is part of a volunteer group 00:07:20.34\00:07:22.47 Open Heart International from Sydney. 00:07:22.50\00:07:24.57 These are medical professionals 00:07:24.61\00:07:26.11 who go to various developing countries each year 00:07:26.14\00:07:28.74 conducting medical camps. 00:07:28.78\00:07:30.58 For Karen and her team, 00:07:30.61\00:07:32.08 camps such as these may seem just another day's work, 00:07:32.11\00:07:35.38 but it has a profound impact on these women 00:07:35.42\00:07:37.72 who suffer from prolapse. 00:07:37.75\00:07:39.55 And for the volunteers, it's an opportunity 00:07:39.59\00:07:41.89 to make a difference in their own humble ways. 00:07:41.92\00:07:44.66 Volunteering to me, 00:07:44.69\00:07:47.46 it's emotional. 00:07:47.50\00:07:48.96 You all get very drawn in to what they don't have 00:07:49.00\00:07:52.27 and what we can do to them. 00:07:52.30\00:07:53.80 We might think we're just doing 00:07:53.84\00:07:55.27 what we do every day back at home, 00:07:55.30\00:07:57.77 but for them it's life changing. 00:07:57.81\00:08:00.84 And even though it might seem just a drop in the ocean, 00:08:00.88\00:08:05.45 for 80 to 90 women in the 10 days 00:08:05.48\00:08:08.65 that we are here operating, it changes their lives 00:08:08.68\00:08:11.39 and that change of life for these people 00:08:11.42\00:08:14.39 that makes it emotional. 00:08:14.42\00:08:17.79 Scheer Memorial Hospital is overwhelmed 00:08:17.83\00:08:20.16 with the inflow of women needing surgeries 00:08:20.20\00:08:22.33 for uterine prolapse. 00:08:22.36\00:08:23.97 Without these volunteers, 00:08:24.00\00:08:25.40 it will be a tough task to facilitate them all. 00:08:25.43\00:08:28.44 In the hospital, we have 200 to 300 surgeries 00:08:28.47\00:08:30.97 will be there in the year. 00:08:31.01\00:08:32.51 Out of 200 to 300, we have 30 to 40% of surgery 00:08:32.54\00:08:37.45 will be done the uterine prolapse. 00:08:37.48\00:08:40.08 The only thing that is stopping us 00:08:40.12\00:08:42.68 to doing more, 00:08:42.72\00:08:44.09 it is basically the financial aspect. 00:08:44.12\00:08:46.09 If we have more funding, we can do even more. 00:08:46.12\00:08:49.92 Over half a million women 00:08:49.96\00:08:51.29 are suffering from prolapse in Nepal, 00:08:51.33\00:08:53.56 and Scheer Memorial Hospital is a place they can come 00:08:53.60\00:08:56.36 to get it fixed and ease their suffering. 00:08:56.40\00:08:58.90 The good news is spreading among women in Nepal. 00:08:58.93\00:09:01.60 The more women are identified, educated, 00:09:01.64\00:09:04.01 and brought to these camps, 00:09:04.04\00:09:05.54 the more women are willing to come out 00:09:05.57\00:09:07.54 and seek medical care. 00:09:07.58\00:09:09.14 This one here, her name is Puneswari, 00:09:09.18\00:09:12.21 and she actually has... 00:09:12.25\00:09:14.28 Because she has been so grateful 00:09:14.32\00:09:16.15 for what has happened in her life, 00:09:16.18\00:09:17.85 she has now brought 25 more ladies 00:09:17.89\00:09:21.26 who have had operations. 00:09:21.29\00:09:23.12 And I think that's really special. 00:09:23.16\00:09:25.19 And so they just... 00:09:25.23\00:09:26.56 When we told them we were having a filming today, 00:09:26.59\00:09:28.83 they were just so thrilled to think 00:09:28.86\00:09:30.30 that they could come and say 00:09:30.33\00:09:31.83 how grateful they are for the transformation 00:09:31.87\00:09:34.30 that's happened in their lives. 00:09:34.34\00:09:35.67 Well, it's changed their lives, 00:09:38.91\00:09:40.24 and now that they can walk comfortably, 00:09:40.28\00:09:42.24 they're able to work and help and care for their families, 00:09:42.28\00:09:46.15 it's just, it's a totally transforming thing 00:09:46.18\00:09:49.78 that I think we just wouldn't understand 00:09:49.82\00:09:52.75 unless we had actually been 00:09:52.79\00:09:54.12 through the same experiences they have been. 00:09:54.16\00:09:56.69 And for this lady to bring 25, I think that's really something 00:09:56.73\00:09:59.96 because that shows how grateful she is 00:10:00.00\00:10:03.57 for the operation that she has had. 00:10:03.60\00:10:05.53 Today, Adventist missions like Scheer Memorial Hospital, 00:10:10.81\00:10:14.14 organizations like Child Impact International, 00:10:14.18\00:10:16.64 and the goodwill of hundreds of volunteers 00:10:16.68\00:10:18.78 and missionaries is making a difference 00:10:18.81\00:10:21.28 and bringing a healing touch to women in Nepal 00:10:21.32\00:10:24.09 transforming their lives every single day. 00:10:24.12\00:10:26.92 Together it is possible 00:10:26.96\00:10:28.39 to facilitate this transformation 00:10:28.42\00:10:30.36 for these grateful women. 00:10:30.39\00:10:31.96 It is possible to put smiles back on their faces. 00:10:31.99\00:10:35.00 Just to hear them say, "Thank you." 00:10:35.03\00:10:36.90 They are a nation, 00:10:44.07\00:10:46.31 they are so loving and thankful. 00:10:46.34\00:10:49.18 And if I can just help a little bit, 00:10:49.21\00:10:51.51 I'll keep coming back. 00:10:51.55\00:10:52.88 A key mission school in Bangladesh, 00:11:03.73\00:11:06.26 where Child Impact has many sponsored children 00:11:06.29\00:11:09.60 has an urgent need for a multipurpose building. 00:11:09.63\00:11:13.07 The current building, which you can see here, 00:11:13.10\00:11:15.67 is over 20 years old and was poorly constructed. 00:11:15.70\00:11:19.77 It is extremely dangerous. 00:11:19.81\00:11:22.81 I'm Jim Rennie, CEO of Child Impact International. 00:11:22.84\00:11:27.15 And recently I visited the school 00:11:27.18\00:11:29.68 and I was able to confirm with an engineer 00:11:29.72\00:11:32.69 that traveled with me, 00:11:32.72\00:11:34.16 the critical state of the building. 00:11:34.19\00:11:36.73 The school Kellogg-Mookerjee Memorial Seminary 00:11:36.76\00:11:40.80 has over 450 students, 00:11:40.83\00:11:43.67 including, as I said, many sponsored by Child Impact. 00:11:43.70\00:11:47.67 The school is a key mission outreach 00:11:47.70\00:11:50.27 and serves a very poor community. 00:11:50.31\00:11:53.17 Simply put, this building is dangerous. 00:11:53.21\00:11:56.44 We need to build a new three storied building. 00:11:56.48\00:11:59.45 And in this building, 00:11:59.48\00:12:00.82 it will house over eight classrooms, 00:12:00.85\00:12:04.02 a science laboratory, a school library, 00:12:04.05\00:12:07.56 school administration offices, 00:12:07.59\00:12:09.92 but more important a new English medium school 00:12:09.96\00:12:13.60 right at the front adjoining the road 00:12:13.63\00:12:15.96 where we have multi level English training school. 00:12:16.00\00:12:20.04 This will attract fee paying day students 00:12:20.07\00:12:23.30 and will drive urgently needed revenue for the school. 00:12:23.34\00:12:28.28 The total cost including the fed out, 00:12:28.31\00:12:30.85 library, science lab, 00:12:30.88\00:12:32.68 and English training school is about $520,000. 00:12:32.71\00:12:37.05 And to date, 00:12:37.09\00:12:38.42 Child Impact has reached $350,000. 00:12:38.45\00:12:42.42 Right now we're asking you to help us, 00:12:42.46\00:12:45.29 any amount would be great. 00:12:45.33\00:12:47.30 But the exciting thing is 00:12:47.33\00:12:49.13 that we have a generous donor who will match $1 for $1. 00:12:49.16\00:12:53.60 So each $1 you give will be turned into $2. 00:12:53.64\00:12:57.81 If you give $1,000 he will match it with $1,000. 00:12:57.84\00:13:02.14 It includes large or small donations. 00:13:02.18\00:13:05.21 We are able to double your giving. 00:13:05.25\00:13:07.52 This is a very special school that serves a poor community 00:13:07.55\00:13:11.75 and has over 50 orphans. 00:13:11.79\00:13:14.06 The need for the classrooms, library, science lab 00:13:14.09\00:13:17.69 is critical to the children graduating. 00:13:17.73\00:13:20.93 The English training school 00:13:20.96\00:13:22.96 will be critical revenue for the school. 00:13:23.00\00:13:25.80 Realistically the current building is dangerous 00:13:25.83\00:13:28.70 and must be replaced.
