Child Impact International is an organization giving hope, 00:00:07.30\00:00:11.11 previously called Asian Aid. 00:00:11.14\00:00:13.11 Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:13.14\00:00:15.84 fostering permanent positive change 00:00:15.88\00:00:18.08 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:18.11\00:00:20.12 and their communities. 00:00:20.15\00:00:21.75 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:21.78\00:00:24.25 in the lives of children and those who are in need, 00:00:24.29\00:00:27.16 serving communities in India, 00:00:27.19\00:00:28.82 Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, 00:00:28.86\00:00:32.19 and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:32.23\00:00:34.63 For the last 50 years, 00:00:34.66\00:00:36.03 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people, 00:00:36.06\00:00:39.00 and their investment has proven infinite returns, 00:00:39.03\00:00:41.90 driven by the dedication 00:00:41.94\00:00:43.41 to helping those who have the least. 00:00:43.44\00:00:45.47 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:45.51\00:00:47.68 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:47.71\00:00:49.74 implementing diverse development projects, 00:00:49.78\00:00:52.25 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.28\00:00:54.38 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:54.42\00:00:57.45 to providing an education for orphans, 00:00:57.49\00:00:59.75 deaf, and the blind children, giving them a sense of place, 00:00:59.79\00:01:03.53 a home. 00:01:03.56\00:01:04.89 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:04.93\00:01:08.50 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:08.53\00:01:11.90 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:11.93\00:01:14.57 This is Hope In Motion. 00:01:14.60\00:01:19.67 A television series, 00:01:19.71\00:01:21.14 Hope in Motion has been a big success. 00:01:21.18\00:01:24.28 And we want to continue to share with you 00:01:24.31\00:01:26.98 some of the field stories 00:01:27.02\00:01:28.68 that we have filmed over the years. 00:01:28.72\00:01:30.99 So just from time to time, 00:01:31.02\00:01:33.05 it may refer to Asian Aid 00:01:33.09\00:01:35.26 as we reflect on these great stories 00:01:35.29\00:01:38.36 as we share them with you. 00:01:38.39\00:01:42.43 Nepal is renowned for its natural beauty 00:01:42.46\00:01:44.63 and enduring culture, 00:01:44.67\00:01:46.20 having existed as early 00:01:46.23\00:01:47.77 as its neighbors India and China, 00:01:47.80\00:01:49.94 Nepal has kept its cultural heritage intact, 00:01:49.97\00:01:52.94 offering an extraordinary travel experience 00:01:52.97\00:01:55.44 for a visitor. 00:01:55.48\00:01:56.81 With 8 of the 10 highest mountain peaks 00:02:00.32\00:02:02.25 in the world, 00:02:02.28\00:02:03.62 including Mount Everest, 00:02:03.65\00:02:04.99 Nepal's landscape is truly inspiring. 00:02:05.02\00:02:07.26 Nepal is also one of the poorest countries 00:02:07.29\00:02:09.42 in the world, 00:02:09.46\00:02:10.79 where one-third of the population 00:02:10.83\00:02:12.36 live below the poverty line, 00:02:12.39\00:02:14.26 earning less than $2 a day. 00:02:14.30\00:02:17.70 For most of our work is in India. 00:02:17.73\00:02:21.30 But when we come to Nepal, 00:02:21.34\00:02:23.84 we see a different level of poverty. 00:02:23.87\00:02:26.47 The economy is certainly worse here, 00:02:26.51\00:02:28.44 the level of poverty, the level of pollution, 00:02:28.48\00:02:31.91 there's a huge need, 00:02:31.95\00:02:33.28 and we want to do more in Nepal. 00:02:33.31\00:02:35.25 With a majority of Nepalese depending on their daily wages, 00:02:35.28\00:02:38.65 obtaining healthcare is one of the main challenges 00:02:38.69\00:02:41.46 people face in this developing country. 00:02:41.49\00:02:43.93 This is where Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:02:43.96\00:02:46.03 plays a crucial role in serving the medical needs 00:02:46.06\00:02:48.63 of the people of Nepal. 00:02:48.66\00:02:50.00 Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:02:53.94\00:02:55.27 was established over 55 years ago 00:02:55.30\00:02:57.47 by Adventist missionaries serving in Nepal. 00:02:57.51\00:03:00.44 Situated just outside Kathmandu, 00:03:00.48\00:03:02.91 the hospital is an important institution 00:03:02.94\00:03:04.88 for the community 00:03:04.91\00:03:06.25 and the Adventist church in Nepal. 00:03:06.28\00:03:08.75 Well, at the beginning, the hospital, 00:03:08.78\00:03:13.02 after the establishment of the hospital 00:03:13.05\00:03:14.49 is when the church has started to expand. 00:03:14.52\00:03:16.99 So Scheer Memorial Hospital is basically the birth 00:03:17.03\00:03:20.73 of the Adventist community in Nepal. 00:03:20.76\00:03:24.07 Right now, the church has been growing. 00:03:24.10\00:03:27.14 Now we have over around 4,000 members, 00:03:27.17\00:03:31.31 but the main organization 00:03:31.34\00:03:33.27 of the Seventh-day of Adventist Church 00:03:33.31\00:03:34.64 in Nepal is our hospital. 00:03:34.68\00:03:38.48 Although the cost of a doctor's consultation 00:03:38.51\00:03:40.68 is only 33 cents, some cannot even afford that. 00:03:40.72\00:03:44.75 People come from miles around, 00:03:44.79\00:03:46.62 from rural villages to hilltop settlements, 00:03:46.65\00:03:49.12 seeking medical help. 00:03:49.16\00:03:50.83 The hospital also provides ambulance services 00:03:50.86\00:03:53.29 to emergency cases, 00:03:53.33\00:03:54.80 often traversing through inaccessible 00:03:54.83\00:03:57.00 and dangerous roads. 00:03:57.03\00:03:58.37 Child Impact International's focus 00:04:13.28\00:04:15.32 has always been about children, 00:04:15.35\00:04:17.15 providing children who are in need 00:04:17.19\00:04:18.85 with an education and giving them an opportunity 00:04:18.89\00:04:21.59 for a better future 00:04:21.62\00:04:22.96 through its sponsorship program, 00:04:22.99\00:04:24.43 along with the need to get healthcare 00:04:24.46\00:04:26.36 and access to medical centers. 00:04:26.39\00:04:28.03 The opportunity to get good education 00:04:28.06\00:04:30.23 is highly important to the people of Nepal. 00:04:30.27\00:04:32.67 The main thing is education. 00:04:32.70\00:04:35.17 And because in this part of the world, 00:04:35.20\00:04:36.77 if you've got no education, 00:04:36.81\00:04:39.71 your life is really, 00:04:39.74\00:04:42.81 you know, you can't earn hardly anything, 00:04:42.84\00:04:46.25 all you can do is labor. 00:04:46.28\00:04:48.28 And in many places, 00:04:48.32\00:04:49.65 what the labors are paid is almost nothing. 00:04:49.68\00:04:52.65 So I think education just makes 00:04:52.69\00:04:56.12 so much difference in this part of the world, 00:04:56.16\00:04:57.79 more than it does in Western countries. 00:04:57.83\00:05:01.53 But in a world where earning $2 a day 00:05:01.56\00:05:03.90 is a struggle for the majority of the people, 00:05:03.93\00:05:06.40 sending their children to school 00:05:06.43\00:05:07.94 is a strain on their finances, and it remains a distant dream. 00:05:07.97\00:05:12.07 Without sponsorship, 00:05:12.11\00:05:13.44 it would be very difficult for their children 00:05:13.48\00:05:15.38 to receive an education. 00:05:15.41\00:05:17.41 I'm here at the school where Asian Aid USA 00:05:17.45\00:05:20.28 is sponsoring a number of children 00:05:20.32\00:05:22.65 next to Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:05:22.68\00:05:25.02 in Kathmandu in Nepal. 00:05:25.05\00:05:27.42 We have about 40 children at the school, 00:05:27.46\00:05:31.03 and we want to increase the numbers. 00:05:31.06\00:05:33.56 This school is very important to Asian Aid USA 00:05:33.60\00:05:36.60 as we don't have many schools in Nepal 00:05:36.63\00:05:39.47 where we're involved in, 00:05:39.50\00:05:40.84 and we have chosen the school 00:05:40.87\00:05:42.87 because of its close relationship 00:05:42.90\00:05:45.11 to the Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:05:45.14\00:05:47.38 but also the need in the area. 00:05:47.41\00:05:49.18 Children from the local community 00:05:53.55\00:05:55.42 and some of the hospital staff's children 00:05:55.45\00:05:57.32 attend the school. 00:05:57.35\00:05:58.72 Although the church is trying to develop 00:05:58.75\00:06:00.49 more schools in Nepal, without sponsorship, 00:06:00.52\00:06:03.06 it would be difficult to attract students 00:06:03.09\00:06:05.09 from the community. 00:06:05.13\00:06:06.46 Suman Praja is a fourth grade student 00:06:44.13\00:06:46.50 at the school. 00:06:46.53\00:06:47.87 Orphaned at a very young age, 00:06:47.90\00:06:49.57 Suman grew up begging in the streets 00:06:49.60\00:06:51.67 in the town close to Scheer Memorial Hospital. 00:06:51.71\00:06:54.41 A local church pastor found him 00:06:54.44\00:06:56.41 and brought him to a small orphanage 00:06:56.44\00:06:58.21 he was running for abandoned children. 00:06:58.25\00:07:00.38 His church members supported his work 00:07:00.42\00:07:02.48 and provided funding 00:07:02.52\00:07:03.85 for their food and accommodations. 00:07:03.89\00:07:05.75 But he found it difficult to pay their tuition fees. 00:07:05.79\00:07:08.82 Fortunately, for Suman, 00:07:08.86\00:07:10.26 the pastor knew people at Scheer Memorial, 00:07:10.29\00:07:12.49 and Suman was enrolled at the school. 00:07:12.53\00:07:14.40 I'm very happy 00:07:17.60\00:07:18.93 that Suman could go to the school, 00:07:18.97\00:07:21.00 and he's getting sponsorship. 00:07:21.04\00:07:23.24 And this school at the hospital is a Christian school, 00:07:23.27\00:07:26.47 and he could continue to learn about Jesus there. 00:07:26.51\00:07:28.74 My name is Goma Paudyal. 00:07:57.21\00:07:59.41 I teach in playgroup. 00:07:59.44\00:08:01.44 These kids are lovely, and I enjoy teaching them. 00:08:01.48\00:08:04.98 This is the best job I enjoy the most, 00:08:05.01\00:08:07.12 and I don't even notice when the time pass 00:08:07.15\00:08:09.82 when I'm playing with them and teaching them. 00:08:09.85\00:08:12.19 This is what I enjoy the most here. 00:08:12.22\00:08:17.23 The school provides employment to teachers 00:08:17.26\00:08:19.49 who are from the local community, 00:08:19.53\00:08:21.16 like Goma Paudyal, 00:08:21.20\00:08:22.53 who otherwise would have to travel long distances 00:08:22.56\00:08:25.27 or go to Kathmandu to find a good teaching job. 00:08:25.30\00:08:28.54 The school also provides one nourishing meal a day 00:08:28.57\00:08:31.24 for all the children 00:08:31.27\00:08:32.61 as part of its incentive program 00:08:32.64\00:08:34.38 to encourage parents to send their children 00:08:34.41\00:08:36.48 to school. 00:08:36.51\00:08:37.85 Education is highly valued in Nepal, 00:08:41.28\00:08:43.69 as it is in the rest of South Asia. 00:08:43.72\00:08:45.85 Parents perceive a good education 00:08:45.89\00:08:47.66 as a catalyst for change. 00:08:47.69\00:08:49.46 This perception is not just for a better future 00:08:49.49\00:08:51.89 for their children 00:08:51.93\00:08:53.26 but they also believe it will bring changes 00:08:53.29\00:08:55.16 to their own fortunes. 00:08:55.20\00:08:57.30 In these cultures, usually, 00:08:57.33\00:08:59.50 the educated children will care for the parents also 00:08:59.53\00:09:02.00 when they get old 00:09:02.04\00:09:03.51 because if a parent gets to the place 00:09:03.54\00:09:05.81 where they're too sick and too old 00:09:05.84\00:09:08.48 to work in the fields 00:09:08.51\00:09:09.84 or whatever laboring work they've been doing, 00:09:09.88\00:09:12.15 well, what do you do? 00:09:12.18\00:09:13.82 You basically beg and starve 00:09:13.85\00:09:16.35 or, you know, depending where you live, 00:09:16.38\00:09:19.09 maybe some beggars, 00:09:19.12\00:09:20.46 you know, can make a little bit, 00:09:20.49\00:09:21.89 but in remote areas, 00:09:21.92\00:09:24.39 especially if they're in a village 00:09:24.43\00:09:25.76 where everybody's poor, 00:09:25.79\00:09:27.13 you know, they're lucky to get anything. 00:09:27.16\00:09:29.26 So I think a lot of parents will also think about that, 00:09:29.30\00:09:33.23 you know, if my child gets a good education, 00:09:33.27\00:09:35.50 it'll also be a blessing to me in my old age. 00:09:35.54\00:09:37.87 My name is Andrew Rapp. 00:09:44.25\00:09:45.58 I'm from Walla Walla University. 00:09:45.61\00:09:47.42 I'm studying business, 00:09:47.45\00:09:49.42 marketing, and international business, 00:09:49.45\00:09:51.15 but I took a gap year to come to Nepal 00:09:51.19\00:09:53.92 and work as a volunteer school teacher 00:09:53.96\00:09:56.19 and youth mentor. 00:09:56.22\00:09:58.06 Colorado native Andrew is a volunteer teacher 00:09:58.09\00:10:00.83 at the school. 00:10:00.86\00:10:02.20 Because of its close association 00:10:02.23\00:10:03.57 with the hospital, 00:10:03.60\00:10:04.93 the school has been privileged to bring in overseas teachers 00:10:04.97\00:10:07.97 who come here bringing a new approach to teaching. 00:10:08.00\00:10:10.74 This not only exposes the students 00:10:10.77\00:10:12.64 to an international array of teachers 00:10:12.67\00:10:14.64 but also helps the missionary teachers 00:10:14.68\00:10:16.85 get a different outlook in life. 00:10:16.88\00:10:19.01 I think, for me, it is really important 00:10:19.05\00:10:21.62 just to be able to take a break, 00:10:21.65\00:10:24.62 take a step back from my life in school 00:10:24.65\00:10:27.16 and being so focused on what I want to do, 00:10:27.19\00:10:29.92 and take a step back and see what other people need 00:10:29.96\00:10:34.13 that there's more important things 00:10:34.16\00:10:35.90 than just my concerns. 00:10:35.93\00:10:37.63 There's people that have more immediate needs 00:10:37.67\00:10:40.90 than the fickle things 00:10:40.94\00:10:42.74 that I think might be so important back home. 00:10:42.77\00:10:46.37 No doubt 00:10:46.41\00:10:47.74 a good Christian education in schools 00:10:47.78\00:10:49.34 providing that opportunity 00:10:49.38\00:10:50.85 is a beacon of hope for the children here. 00:10:50.88\00:10:53.15 And Child Impact Sponsorship Program 00:10:53.18\00:10:55.28 is helping them see that ray of hope 00:10:55.32\00:10:57.29 in this impoverished yet idyllic region. 00:10:57.32\00:11:01.49 A key mission school in Bangladesh 00:11:01.52\00:11:03.89 where Child Impact has many sponsored children 00:11:03.93\00:11:07.36 has an urgent need for a multipurpose building. 00:11:07.40\00:11:10.77 The current building, 00:11:10.80\00:11:12.13 which you can see here is over 20 years old 00:11:12.17\00:11:15.37 and was poorly constructed. 00:11:15.40\00:11:17.54 It is extremely dangerous. 00:11:17.57\00:11:20.48 I'm Jim Rennie, 00:11:20.51\00:11:21.88 CEO of Child Impact International. 00:11:21.91\00:11:24.88 And recently, I visited the school 00:11:24.91\00:11:27.42 and was able to confirm, 00:11:27.45\00:11:29.42 with an engineer that traveled with me, 00:11:29.45\00:11:31.85 the critical state of the building. 00:11:31.89\00:11:34.29 The school, 00:11:34.32\00:11:35.66 Kellogg-Mookerjee Memorial Seminary 00:11:35.69\00:11:38.46 has over 450 students, 00:11:38.49\00:11:41.36 including, as I said, many sponsored by Child Impact. 00:11:41.40\00:11:45.27 This school is a key mission outreach 00:11:45.30\00:11:48.00 and serves a very poor community. 00:11:48.04\00:11:50.87 Simply put, this building is dangerous. 00:11:50.91\00:11:54.11 We need to build a new three-story building. 00:11:54.14\00:11:57.15 And in this building, 00:11:57.18\00:11:58.51 it will have over eight classrooms, 00:11:58.55\00:12:01.68 a science laboratory, a school library, 00:12:01.72\00:12:05.32 school administration offices, but more important, 00:12:05.35\00:12:08.72 a new English medium school 00:12:08.76\00:12:11.23 right at the front of joining the road 00:12:11.26\00:12:13.76 where we have multi-level English training school. 00:12:13.80\00:12:17.60 This will attract fee paying day students 00:12:17.63\00:12:20.90 and will drive urgently needed revenue for the school. 00:12:20.94\00:12:26.01 The total cost including the material, 00:12:26.04\00:12:28.44 library, science lab, 00:12:28.48\00:12:30.38 and English training school is about $520,000. 00:12:30.41\00:12:34.68 And to date, 00:12:34.72\00:12:36.05 Child Impact has reached $350,000. 00:12:36.08\00:12:39.95 Right now, we're asking you to help us. 00:12:39.99\00:12:42.92 Any amount would be great, 00:12:42.96\00:12:44.99 but the exciting thing 00:12:45.03\00:12:46.36 is that we have a generous donor 00:12:46.39\00:12:48.86 who will match it dollar for dollar. 00:12:48.90\00:12:51.23 So each dollar you give will be turned into $2. 00:12:51.27\00:12:55.47 If you give $1,000, he will match it with $1,000. 00:12:55.50\00:12:59.77 It includes large or small donations. 00:12:59.81\00:13:02.94 You're able to double your giving. 00:13:02.98\00:13:05.31 This is a very special school that serves a poor community 00:13:05.35\00:13:09.48 and has over 50 orphans. 00:13:09.52\00:13:11.75 The need for the classrooms, library, 00:13:11.79\00:13:14.52 science lab is critical to the children graduating. 00:13:14.56\00:13:18.69 The English training school will be critical revenue 00:13:18.73\00:13:22.23 for the school. 00:13:22.26\00:13:23.60 Realistically, 00:13:23.63\00:13:24.97 the current building is dangerous 00:13:25.00\00:13:26.47 and must be replaced. 00:13:26.50\00:13:28.50 Please help us 00:13:28.54\00:13:29.90 with the special Bangladesh building appeal. 00:13:29.94\00:13:33.51 You can go to our website and donate
