Child Impact International 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.27 is an organization that gives hope 00:00:04.30\00:00:06.40 and fosters permanent, positive change 00:00:06.43\00:00:08.74 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:08.77\00:00:10.91 and their communities. 00:00:10.94\00:00:13.61 Countries include Zambia, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, 00:00:13.64\00:00:18.25 Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. 00:00:18.28\00:00:20.98 Child Impact's investment 00:00:21.02\00:00:22.35 in the lives of more than 3,500 children 00:00:22.38\00:00:25.19 continues to yield infinite returns. 00:00:25.22\00:00:28.09 Outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:28.12\00:00:30.53 to providing an education and a home 00:00:30.56\00:00:32.76 for deaf and blind children and orphans. 00:00:32.79\00:00:35.60 Above all, 00:00:35.63\00:00:36.97 Child Impact's sponsors 00:00:37.00\00:00:38.37 give hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:00:38.40\00:00:41.10 Situated amidst lush green paddy fields 00:00:51.11\00:00:53.78 of Bobbili in Andhra Pradesh, India 00:00:53.82\00:00:56.18 is an institution that is home 00:00:56.22\00:00:57.89 to some of the most disadvantaged children 00:00:57.92\00:01:00.16 in the society. 00:01:00.19\00:01:03.39 This is the school for the blind 00:01:03.43\00:01:04.93 run by Child Impact International. 00:01:04.96\00:01:08.06 In a world 00:01:08.10\00:01:09.43 where blindness is considered a curse 00:01:09.46\00:01:11.07 and blind children are abandoned, 00:01:11.10\00:01:13.10 this campus is a refuge for children 00:01:13.13\00:01:15.24 seeking care and comfort. 00:01:15.27\00:01:17.21 There are various circumstances 00:01:23.08\00:01:24.85 that have contributed to these children 00:01:24.88\00:01:26.38 losing their sight. 00:01:26.41\00:01:27.75 Some of them are victims of accidents, 00:01:27.78\00:01:29.98 some due to vitamin deficiency 00:01:30.02\00:01:32.15 factored by lack of nutritious food, 00:01:32.19\00:01:34.22 but most of them were born blind. 00:01:34.26\00:01:36.09 Okay. 00:01:36.12\00:01:37.46 Fine. 00:01:40.26\00:01:42.60 Okay, very... 00:01:42.63\00:01:43.97 Okay, very good. 00:01:44.00\00:01:45.33 Akhila Macha 00:01:45.37\00:01:46.70 is a seventh-grade student at the school. 00:01:46.74\00:01:48.07 She comes from a small tribal community 00:01:48.10\00:01:50.17 not far from the school in Bobbili. 00:01:50.21\00:01:52.57 Akhila is the second-girl child in the family 00:01:52.61\00:01:55.14 and was born blind. 00:01:55.18\00:01:56.51 When Akhila was born blind, 00:02:11.19\00:02:12.89 her father wouldn't accept her 00:02:12.93\00:02:14.60 and wanted to abandon and leave her at the hospital. 00:02:14.63\00:02:18.33 In a patriarchal society 00:02:18.37\00:02:20.00 where a girl child is often considered a burden, 00:02:20.04\00:02:22.94 Akhila's father did not want another girl child, 00:02:22.97\00:02:26.34 that too, a girl child with visual impairment. 00:02:26.37\00:02:31.11 You know, there are people who are poor, 00:02:31.15\00:02:34.28 who are really struggling to bring her up 00:02:34.32\00:02:36.02 to look after their family and bring up their kids. 00:02:36.05\00:02:38.22 And then what happens if you're a girl in the family, 00:02:38.25\00:02:41.49 where do you sit in the hierarchy? 00:02:41.52\00:02:43.12 How are you accepted in society? 00:02:43.16\00:02:45.79 Boys given education above the girls. 00:02:45.83\00:02:47.63 So straightaway, 00:02:47.66\00:02:49.00 the girls really have an extra challenge here. 00:02:49.03\00:02:51.47 And imagine if that girl has a disability, 00:02:51.50\00:02:53.97 where does that person sit? 00:02:54.00\00:02:56.00 So the need to provide 00:02:56.04\00:02:59.04 special support for all children, 00:02:59.07\00:03:01.61 but especially for girls 00:03:01.64\00:03:03.01 who have disabilities is an amazing opportunity 00:03:03.04\00:03:07.42 to help them 00:03:07.45\00:03:08.78 because there is very little that can be done. 00:03:08.82\00:03:10.42 And if they are in their family environment, 00:03:10.45\00:03:13.86 they can't really contribute, 00:03:13.89\00:03:15.22 they can't work and contribute to their families 00:03:15.26\00:03:16.93 so they are a real burden to their family. 00:03:16.96\00:03:18.93 So we can transform not just the child, 00:03:18.96\00:03:22.43 but the family as well 00:03:22.46\00:03:23.93 by creating a whole new world for this child 00:03:23.97\00:03:26.63 and for the family. 00:03:26.67\00:03:28.00 Cultural issues are hard to understand. 00:03:31.47\00:03:34.21 It may even seem bizarre and cruel at times. 00:03:34.24\00:03:37.15 It's difficult to change people's perceptions 00:03:37.18\00:03:39.61 that are rooted deep. 00:03:39.65\00:03:41.28 While rural traditions and socioeconomic difficulties 00:03:41.32\00:03:44.29 dictate life in rural India, 00:03:44.32\00:03:46.35 their children pay the price. 00:03:46.39\00:03:48.56 In rural villages 00:03:48.59\00:03:49.92 where being handicapped is considered a curse. 00:03:49.96\00:03:52.33 Blind children face an uncertain future. 00:03:52.36\00:03:54.76 For blind children like Akhila, 00:03:58.23\00:04:00.14 the school for the blind in Bobbili 00:04:00.17\00:04:02.04 is a place of refuge. 00:04:02.07\00:04:03.91 Every year we go for campaign 00:04:15.45\00:04:18.39 to find visually impaired children. 00:04:18.42\00:04:21.32 That's how we found Akhila in our village, 00:04:21.36\00:04:23.99 and we saw her, 00:04:24.03\00:04:25.36 and she was so in a pity condition. 00:04:25.39\00:04:27.96 And we talked to their parents. 00:04:28.00\00:04:31.20 Mother was not convinced 00:04:31.23\00:04:34.07 to send her to hostel or to a school 00:04:34.10\00:04:36.74 because she was afraid something would happen 00:04:36.77\00:04:39.67 or something we would do for the child. 00:04:39.71\00:04:42.04 So she was not convinced for one year. 00:04:42.08\00:04:45.78 Again, we went next year. 00:04:45.81\00:04:50.05 And she sent some people to check how the school is 00:04:50.09\00:04:54.86 and what are the activities going on. 00:04:54.89\00:04:56.83 And then later on, she was fully convinced, 00:04:56.86\00:05:00.20 and she felt happy 00:05:00.23\00:05:01.56 that this is the place 00:05:01.60\00:05:02.93 where Akhila should go and study. 00:05:02.96\00:05:04.63 So that's how we picked her up from there to our school. 00:05:04.67\00:05:09.07 For all its traditions and practices, 00:05:09.10\00:05:11.41 the fact remains 00:05:11.44\00:05:12.77 that all parents love their children 00:05:12.81\00:05:14.34 and want the best for them. 00:05:14.38\00:05:16.44 So someone like Akhila, who comes from a tribal area, 00:05:16.48\00:05:20.28 the change for Akhila and her parents is huge. 00:05:20.32\00:05:26.25 Akhila would not have had any chance of education 00:05:26.29\00:05:29.59 without the blind school that she goes to. 00:05:29.62\00:05:32.46 Her parents were very cautious in letting her go. 00:05:32.49\00:05:36.46 But when they know 00:05:36.50\00:05:37.83 that she's getting an education, 00:05:37.87\00:05:39.70 they move from cautious and scared, 00:05:39.73\00:05:42.70 not knowing what to do with a blind child 00:05:42.74\00:05:45.11 to having hope to being proud. 00:05:45.14\00:05:47.88 And so Akhila is an example of the change that is made 00:05:47.91\00:05:52.11 by taking a child from a community 00:05:52.15\00:05:54.62 where there is no hope for them 00:05:54.65\00:05:56.62 and giving them an education and giving them hope. 00:05:56.65\00:05:59.69 Child Impact 00:06:04.99\00:06:06.33 sponsors the majority of children 00:06:06.36\00:06:07.86 living and studying at the school. 00:06:07.90\00:06:10.00 Without sponsorship, 00:06:10.03\00:06:11.37 these children would not have the opportunity 00:06:11.40\00:06:13.23 for a new chance in life. 00:06:13.27\00:06:15.50 The school for the blind is not just an institution 00:06:15.54\00:06:18.11 that provides food and shelter for the blind, 00:06:18.14\00:06:20.41 but it's an institution that prepares them 00:06:20.44\00:06:22.51 for the world outside. 00:06:22.54\00:06:25.25 We're not preparing them 00:06:25.28\00:06:27.02 only for a place to live and eat and grow up. 00:06:27.05\00:06:32.55 We're preparing them 00:06:32.59\00:06:33.99 for the opportunity to prepare for a career 00:06:34.02\00:06:38.19 where they can be self-sustaining adults 00:06:38.23\00:06:41.63 throughout their life. 00:06:41.66\00:06:43.00 It's not just a temporary fix, and then we kick them out, 00:06:43.03\00:06:47.70 or they had to survive on your own. 00:06:47.74\00:06:50.37 They then can leave the school and go out and fill a need 00:06:50.41\00:06:54.14 that will assist them with provide them for 00:06:54.18\00:06:57.45 where they become productive in society on their own. 00:06:57.48\00:07:02.05 The exciting thing in India 00:07:02.08\00:07:03.69 is that the government has made jobs 00:07:03.72\00:07:05.72 available for these children. 00:07:05.75\00:07:07.72 So we're equipping them 00:07:07.76\00:07:09.46 for roles that they can step into. 00:07:09.49\00:07:11.96 We're giving them 00:07:11.99\00:07:13.33 probably their only chance of any training 00:07:13.36\00:07:15.76 in this particular very rural, very tribal, 00:07:15.80\00:07:19.40 very poor community. 00:07:19.43\00:07:21.04 So we're not only giving them education, 00:07:21.07\00:07:23.71 we're giving them a critical steppingstone 00:07:23.74\00:07:26.31 for the roles that are available for them 00:07:26.34\00:07:29.01 in the community. 00:07:29.04\00:07:30.38 All things wise and wonderful 00:07:33.55\00:07:37.99 The lord god made them all 00:07:38.02\00:07:43.29 These children may not have the ability to see 00:07:43.32\00:07:46.03 but this disability does not deprive them 00:07:46.06\00:07:48.16 of the ability to learn. 00:07:48.20\00:07:49.93 They are perfectly capable 00:07:49.96\00:07:51.47 of acquiring skills needed for employment. 00:07:51.50\00:07:54.17 In fact, the Indian government refers to them 00:07:54.20\00:07:56.94 not as disabled but differently-abled, 00:07:56.97\00:07:59.64 and the school for the blind 00:07:59.67\00:08:01.08 provides them an ideal place 00:08:01.11\00:08:02.78 for these differently-abled children 00:08:02.81\00:08:04.41 to acquire skills. 00:08:04.45\00:08:06.05 For Akhila's parents who are daily laborers, 00:08:06.08\00:08:08.72 knowing their blind child is attending school 00:08:08.75\00:08:11.05 is a satisfying feeling. 00:08:11.09\00:08:12.65 If she didn't go to school, 00:08:13.79\00:08:16.66 she would be at home struggling everyday. 00:08:16.69\00:08:20.00 We will be worried every day because we have to go out 00:08:20.03\00:08:24.70 and ear our living. 00:08:24.73\00:08:26.67 Now that she is studying at the school 00:08:26.70\00:08:29.10 we are very happy. 00:08:29.14\00:08:30.81 Without sponsorship, 00:08:39.05\00:08:40.42 Akhila would not be at the school. 00:08:40.45\00:08:43.15 Today, because of Child Impact sponsorship program 00:08:43.18\00:08:46.45 and individuals supporting its program, 00:08:46.49\00:08:48.82 hundreds of differently-abled students 00:08:48.86\00:08:50.76 like Akhila can receive an education, 00:08:50.79\00:08:53.26 an education that will help them 00:08:53.29\00:08:54.80 to lead a dignified life. 00:08:54.83\00:08:57.83 If children like Akhila, if they don't come to a school, 00:08:57.87\00:09:03.71 they would have stayed at home, 00:09:03.74\00:09:05.81 the condition become worst, 00:09:05.84\00:09:07.44 and people don't really love her, 00:09:07.48\00:09:10.15 or they don't take her in the family. 00:09:10.18\00:09:13.31 So it is must for us to go forward 00:09:13.35\00:09:17.62 and find children and sponsorship for them, 00:09:17.65\00:09:21.92 especially, it's very much main to them. 00:09:21.96\00:09:25.63 Because people like Akhila, 00:09:25.66\00:09:28.66 who are visually impaired 00:09:28.70\00:09:30.67 needs to have this kind of education 00:09:30.70\00:09:33.23 in this part of Andhra Pradesh. 00:09:33.27\00:09:34.70 Child is the center of Child Impact's work, 00:09:37.74\00:09:40.98 whether one is able to contribute 00:09:41.01\00:09:42.51 in a small way or in a big way, 00:09:42.54\00:09:44.78 sponsorship endows these children's future 00:09:44.81\00:09:47.25 giving them the life they deserve. 00:09:47.28\00:09:49.78 Child Impacts work 00:09:49.82\00:09:51.15 with these special needs children 00:09:51.19\00:09:52.72 also has a much bigger impact in the community. 00:09:52.75\00:09:56.29 As special schools have a special impact, 00:09:56.32\00:09:59.09 and the reality 00:09:59.13\00:10:00.46 is many people at all levels of society 00:10:00.50\00:10:03.77 are becoming know our work 00:10:03.80\00:10:05.43 through these special homes and schools. 00:10:05.47\00:10:08.27 So they're impacting the child, the family, and the community 00:10:08.30\00:10:12.54 with what Christianity 00:10:12.57\00:10:14.28 and Seventh-day Adventists are all about. 00:10:14.31\00:10:17.48 Special Needs Ministries is an area 00:10:17.51\00:10:20.42 in which we are very, very interested 00:10:20.45\00:10:23.32 and very proactively working, 00:10:23.35\00:10:25.55 helping the world feel to understand 00:10:25.59\00:10:27.66 that there are many people in various areas and sectors 00:10:27.69\00:10:31.53 of the population that have not been touched. 00:10:31.56\00:10:34.23 Special Needs Ministries and Child Impact 00:10:34.26\00:10:37.40 is also extremely helpful to God's church 00:10:37.43\00:10:40.80 because those who are physically impaired, 00:10:40.84\00:10:45.44 those who are visually impaired 00:10:45.47\00:10:47.74 or perhaps hearing impaired, 00:10:47.78\00:10:50.35 they are the individuals 00:10:50.38\00:10:51.81 that are being wonderfully serviced 00:10:51.85\00:10:54.25 through Child Impact in India, 00:10:54.28\00:10:57.05 in other places, 00:10:57.09\00:10:58.75 six different countries that Child Impact is active in. 00:10:58.79\00:11:03.49 You know, the Lord really wants us 00:11:03.53\00:11:05.59 to attract and be friendly to and help 00:11:05.63\00:11:10.13 those who are the least of these, 00:11:10.17\00:11:12.97 and they in turn will then become 00:11:13.00\00:11:15.50 great missionaries for the Lord 00:11:15.54\00:11:17.41 within their sector and people group. 00:11:17.44\00:11:20.01 Thanks to the generous support 00:11:29.75\00:11:31.29 of Child Impact and its sponsors, 00:11:31.32\00:11:33.62 blind children like Akhila, 00:11:33.66\00:11:35.29 not only have a place 00:11:35.32\00:11:36.66 where they can acquire life skills 00:11:36.69\00:11:38.09 for the world outside, 00:11:38.13\00:11:39.46 but they have a place 00:11:39.49\00:11:40.83 where they can prepare their souls 00:11:40.86\00:11:42.20 for the world to come. 00:11:42.23\00:11:43.57 A couple of years ago, 00:11:51.44\00:11:52.77 my daughters and I had a wonderful opportunity 00:11:52.81\00:11:55.28 to travel to India. 00:11:55.31\00:11:56.81 And while we were there, 00:11:56.85\00:11:58.18 we met yet another part of our family. 00:11:58.21\00:12:00.32 And that's our sponsor daughter, 00:12:00.35\00:12:01.75 Sheila. 00:12:01.78\00:12:03.12 We've had the privilege of sponsoring Sheila 00:12:03.15\00:12:05.42 through Child Impact International 00:12:05.45\00:12:07.76 for more than three years now. 00:12:07.79\00:12:09.96 And, you know, while we were there, 00:12:09.99\00:12:11.83 she shared with us 00:12:11.86\00:12:13.19 that her dream was to become a nurse. 00:12:13.23\00:12:16.30 Now what a wonderful privilege it is for us 00:12:16.33\00:12:19.10 now as a family 00:12:19.13\00:12:20.94 to know that she is fulfilling that dream. 00:12:20.97\00:12:24.17 Sheila is now studying to be a nurse. 00:12:24.21\00:12:26.88 She's in college, 00:12:26.91\00:12:28.24 and we cannot be happier for her. 00:12:28.28\00:12:30.65 It's been wonderful 00:12:30.68\00:12:32.01 to be part of that journey with her. 00:12:32.05\00:12:34.12 And, you know, sponsoring a child 00:12:34.15\00:12:35.88 through Child Impact, 00:12:35.92\00:12:37.42 it's made an incredible difference 00:12:37.45\00:12:39.12 for our family. 00:12:39.15\00:12:40.56 And I know that for you sponsoring a child 00:12:40.59\00:12:42.72 can make a difference for you too. 00:12:42.76\00:12:44.73 And most importantly, 00:12:44.76\00:12:46.13 it can make the difference 00:12:46.16\00:12:47.50 in the life of a child every day. 00:12:47.53\00:12:49.66 Sponsoring children 00:12:56.50\00:12:58.71 in activities like these mission schools 00:12:58.74\00:13:02.81 and opportunities 00:13:02.84\00:13:04.21 is a tremendous way 00:13:04.25\00:13:06.31 to help form the character of young people 00:13:06.35\00:13:10.19 as they look to the future. 00:13:10.22\00:13:11.69 They will never forget their association 00:13:11.72\00:13:14.86 in a Christian environment. 00:13:14.89\00:13:16.73 And by God's grace, 00:13:16.76\00:13:18.09 many of them will become 00:13:18.13\00:13:19.76 members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:13:19.79\00:13:22.46 It is absolutely a powerful witness 00:13:22.50\00:13:25.87 to sponsor a child in Child Impact 00:13:25.90\00:13:29.34 and so many other organizations 00:13:29.37\00:13:32.41 that help young people to find Jesus. 00:13:32.44\00:13:36.91 Sponsoring a child 00:13:36.95\00:13:38.41 not only has short-term effects, 00:13:38.45\00:13:41.38 but it has a long-term effect. 00:13:41.42\00:13:44.35 Sponsoring a child 00:13:44.39\00:13:45.72 is investing in the character of a young person for eternity, 00:13:45.75\00:13:50.33 that we're taping this right here in Myanmar 00:13:50.36\00:13:53.83 at the Myanmar Union Adventist Seminary, 00:13:53.86\00:13:57.27 and about one-third of the students 00:13:57.30\00:13:59.90 or one-quarter of the students 00:13:59.93\00:14:02.00 are being sponsored by Child Impact. 00:14:02.04\00:14:04.97 People who become workers in God's church, 00:14:05.01\00:14:08.81 people who make an impact in the community 00:14:08.84\00:14:11.88 have been people who have been sponsored. 00:14:11.91\00:14:14.82 Your sponsorship is absolutely an investment 00:14:14.85\00:14:18.92 in the future of the church. 00:14:18.95\00:14:20.56
