Child Impact International 00:00:07.30\00:00:08.90 is an organization giving hope, 00:00:08.94\00:00:11.17 previously called Asian Aid. 00:00:11.21\00:00:13.14 Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:13.17\00:00:15.74 fostering permanent positive change 00:00:15.78\00:00:18.08 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:18.11\00:00:20.22 and their communities. 00:00:20.25\00:00:21.85 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:21.88\00:00:24.35 in the lives of children and those who are in need. 00:00:24.39\00:00:27.29 Serving communities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, 00:00:27.32\00:00:31.26 Myanmar, and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:31.29\00:00:34.53 For the last 50 years, 00:00:34.56\00:00:36.13 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people 00:00:36.16\00:00:39.03 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:00:39.07\00:00:41.90 Driven by the dedication 00:00:41.94\00:00:43.41 to helping those who have the least, 00:00:43.44\00:00:45.51 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:45.54\00:00:47.68 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:47.71\00:00:49.71 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:49.74\00:00:52.28 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.31\00:00:54.38 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:54.42\00:00:57.52 to providing an education 00:00:57.55\00:00:58.99 for orphans, deaf, and the blind children, 00:00:59.02\00:01:01.79 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:01:01.82\00:01:04.66 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:04.69\00:01:08.56 giving hope to children, 00:01:08.60\00:01:10.23 giving hope to community, 00:01:10.27\00:01:11.87 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:11.90\00:01:14.60 This is Hope In Motion. 00:01:14.64\00:01:16.40 Situated amidst a lush green paddy fields 00:01:21.14\00:01:23.81 of Bobbili, in Andhra Pradesh, India 00:01:23.85\00:01:26.18 is an institution that is home 00:01:26.21\00:01:27.88 to some of the most disadvantaged children 00:01:27.92\00:01:30.09 in the society. 00:01:30.12\00:01:31.45 This is the school for the blind 00:01:33.36\00:01:34.96 run by Child Impact International. 00:01:34.99\00:01:38.49 In a world where blindness is considered a curse 00:01:38.53\00:01:41.00 and blind children are abandoned, 00:01:41.03\00:01:43.06 this campus is a refuge for children 00:01:43.10\00:01:45.27 seeking care and comfort. 00:01:45.30\00:01:47.44 There are various circumstances that have contributed 00:01:53.04\00:01:55.61 to these children losing their sight. 00:01:55.64\00:01:57.75 Some of them are victims of accidents, 00:01:57.78\00:01:59.91 some due to vitamin deficiency 00:01:59.95\00:02:02.15 factored by lack of nutritious food, 00:02:02.18\00:02:04.22 but most of them were born blind. 00:02:04.25\00:02:06.35 Okay, let it. 00:02:06.39\00:02:07.72 Akhila Macha is a seventh grade student at the school. 00:02:07.76\00:02:10.59 She comes from a small tribal community 00:02:10.63\00:02:12.83 not far from the school in Bobbili. 00:02:12.86\00:02:14.73 Akhila is the second girl child in the family. 00:02:14.76\00:02:17.40 When Akhila was born blind, 00:02:17.43\00:02:19.13 her father wouldn't accept her 00:02:19.17\00:02:20.74 and wanted to abandon 00:02:20.77\00:02:22.27 and leave her at the hospital. 00:02:22.30\00:02:24.57 In a patriarchal society, 00:02:24.61\00:02:26.31 where a girl child is often considered a burden, 00:02:26.34\00:02:29.21 Akhila's father did not want another girl child, 00:02:29.24\00:02:32.55 that too a girl child with visual impairment. 00:02:32.58\00:02:37.39 You know, there are people who are poor, 00:02:37.42\00:02:40.72 who are really struggling to bring up, 00:02:40.76\00:02:42.22 to look after their family and bring up their kids, 00:02:42.26\00:02:44.49 and then what happens if you're a girl in the family, 00:02:44.53\00:02:47.10 you know, where do you sit in the hierarchy, 00:02:47.13\00:02:49.46 how are you accepted in society. 00:02:49.50\00:02:52.00 But the boy is given education above the girl, 00:02:52.03\00:02:54.04 so straight away the girls 00:02:54.07\00:02:55.47 really have an extra challenge here. 00:02:55.50\00:02:57.74 And imagine if that girl has a disability, 00:02:57.77\00:03:00.18 where does that person sit? 00:03:00.21\00:03:02.14 So the need to provide special support 00:03:02.18\00:03:06.98 for all children but especially for girls 00:03:07.02\00:03:09.28 who have disabilities 00:03:09.32\00:03:10.65 is an amazing opportunity to help them, 00:03:10.69\00:03:14.76 because there is very little that can be done. 00:03:14.79\00:03:16.73 And if they are in their family environment 00:03:16.76\00:03:20.06 they can't really contribute, 00:03:20.10\00:03:21.43 they can't work and contribute to their family, 00:03:21.46\00:03:23.13 so they are real burden to their family. 00:03:23.16\00:03:25.13 So we can transform not just the child, 00:03:25.17\00:03:28.64 but the family as well 00:03:28.67\00:03:30.21 by creating a whole new world 00:03:30.24\00:03:31.77 for this child and for the family. 00:03:31.81\00:03:34.64 Cultural issues are hard to understand. 00:03:34.68\00:03:37.38 It may even seem bizarre and cruel at times. 00:03:37.41\00:03:40.35 It's difficult to change people's perceptions 00:03:40.38\00:03:42.88 that are rooted deep. 00:03:42.92\00:03:44.49 While rural traditions and socio-economic difficulties 00:03:44.52\00:03:47.49 dictate life in rural India, their children pay the price. 00:03:47.52\00:03:51.69 In rural villages where being handicapped 00:03:51.73\00:03:54.10 is considered a curse, 00:03:54.13\00:03:55.50 blind children face an uncertain future. 00:03:55.53\00:03:57.83 For blind children like Akhila, 00:04:01.50\00:04:03.34 the school for the blind in Bobbili 00:04:03.37\00:04:05.17 is a place of refuge. 00:04:05.21\00:04:06.98 Every year we go for campaign 00:04:18.75\00:04:21.62 to find visual impact children. 00:04:21.66\00:04:24.56 That's how we found Akhila in our village, 00:04:24.59\00:04:27.23 and we saw her, 00:04:27.26\00:04:28.60 and she was so in depleted condition. 00:04:28.63\00:04:31.30 And we talked to their parents. 00:04:31.33\00:04:34.40 Mother was not convinced 00:04:34.44\00:04:37.31 to send her to hostel or to our school 00:04:37.34\00:04:39.97 because she was afraid something would happen, 00:04:40.01\00:04:42.91 or something would do for the child. 00:04:42.94\00:04:45.21 So she was not convinced for one year. 00:04:45.25\00:04:48.95 Again we went for next year 00:04:48.98\00:04:53.15 and she sent some people to check how the school is 00:04:53.19\00:04:57.96 and what are the activities going on. 00:04:57.99\00:05:00.06 And then later on, 00:05:00.10\00:05:01.80 she was fully convinced and she felt happy 00:05:01.83\00:05:04.60 that this is a place where Akhila should go and study. 00:05:04.63\00:05:07.84 So that's how we picked her up from there to our school. 00:05:07.87\00:05:12.24 For all its traditions and practices, 00:05:12.27\00:05:14.61 the fact remains 00:05:14.64\00:05:15.98 that all parents love their children 00:05:16.01\00:05:17.41 and want the best for them. 00:05:17.45\00:05:19.68 For someone like Akhila who comes from a tribal area, 00:05:19.71\00:05:23.45 the change for Akhila and her parents is huge. 00:05:23.49\00:05:29.42 Akhila would not have had any chance of education 00:05:29.46\00:05:32.79 without the blind school that she goes to. 00:05:32.83\00:05:35.70 Her parents were very cautious in letting her go. 00:05:35.73\00:05:39.63 But when they know that she is getting an education, 00:05:39.67\00:05:42.84 they moved from cautious and scared 00:05:42.87\00:05:45.87 not knowing what to do with a blind child 00:05:45.91\00:05:48.24 to having hope to being proud. 00:05:48.28\00:05:51.05 And so, Akhila is an example of the change 00:05:51.08\00:05:54.28 that is made by taking a child from a community 00:05:54.32\00:05:57.85 where there is no hope for them, 00:05:57.89\00:05:59.79 and giving them an education and giving them hope. 00:05:59.82\00:06:04.03 Child Impact sponsors the majority of children 00:06:04.06\00:06:06.90 living and studying at the school. 00:06:06.93\00:06:08.96 Without sponsorship, 00:06:09.00\00:06:10.33 these children would not have the opportunity 00:06:10.37\00:06:12.23 for a new chance in life. 00:06:12.27\00:06:14.47 The school for the blind is not just an institution 00:06:14.50\00:06:17.14 that provides food and shelter for the blind, 00:06:17.17\00:06:19.41 but it's an institution that prepares them 00:06:19.44\00:06:21.51 for the world outside. 00:06:21.54\00:06:24.31 We are not preparing them only for a place to live, 00:06:24.35\00:06:28.58 and eat, and grow up. 00:06:28.62\00:06:31.59 We're preparing them for the opportunity 00:06:31.62\00:06:34.96 to prepare for a career 00:06:34.99\00:06:37.23 where they can be self-sustaining adults 00:06:37.26\00:06:40.63 throughout their life. 00:06:40.66\00:06:42.00 It's not just a temporary fix 00:06:42.03\00:06:44.90 and then we kick them out. 00:06:44.93\00:06:46.87 Are they good to survive on their own, 00:06:46.90\00:06:49.24 they then can leave the school 00:06:49.27\00:06:51.17 and go out and fill a need 00:06:51.21\00:06:53.14 that the government will assist them with, provide them for, 00:06:53.17\00:06:56.34 where they become productive in society on their own. 00:06:56.38\00:07:01.05 The exciting thing in India is that the government 00:07:01.08\00:07:03.69 has made jobs available for these children. 00:07:03.72\00:07:06.69 So we're equipping them 00:07:06.72\00:07:08.46 for roles that they can step into. 00:07:08.49\00:07:10.93 We're giving them, probably their only chance 00:07:10.96\00:07:13.46 of any training in this particular, 00:07:13.50\00:07:16.13 very rural, very tribal, 00:07:16.16\00:07:18.37 very poor community. 00:07:18.40\00:07:20.07 So we're not only giving them education, 00:07:20.10\00:07:22.64 we're giving them a critical stepping stone 00:07:22.67\00:07:25.21 for the roles that are available 00:07:25.24\00:07:27.08 for them in the community. 00:07:27.11\00:07:28.81 These children may not have the ability to see, 00:07:39.89\00:07:42.56 but this disability does not deprive them 00:07:42.59\00:07:44.73 of the ability to learn. 00:07:44.76\00:07:46.59 They are perfectly capable of acquiring skills 00:07:46.63\00:07:49.16 needed for employment. 00:07:49.20\00:07:50.67 In fact, the Indian government refers to them not as disabled 00:07:50.70\00:07:54.70 but differently abled. 00:07:54.74\00:07:56.24 And the school for the blind 00:07:56.27\00:07:57.67 provides them an ideal place 00:07:57.71\00:07:59.37 for these differently abled children 00:07:59.41\00:08:01.04 to acquire skills. 00:08:01.08\00:08:02.71 For Akhila's parents who are daily laborers, 00:08:02.74\00:08:05.45 knowing their blind child is attending school 00:08:05.48\00:08:07.62 is a satisfying feeling. 00:08:07.65\00:08:09.02 Without sponsorship, 00:08:35.64\00:08:37.05 Akhila would not be at the school. 00:08:37.08\00:08:39.75 Today, because of Child Impact sponsorship program 00:08:39.78\00:08:43.08 and individual supporting its program, 00:08:43.12\00:08:45.35 hundreds of differently abled students like Akhila 00:08:45.39\00:08:48.29 can receive an education, 00:08:48.32\00:08:49.89 an education that will help them to lead a dignified life. 00:08:49.92\00:08:54.43 If people like, children like Akhila, 00:08:54.46\00:08:58.03 if they don't come to our school, 00:08:58.07\00:09:00.20 they would have stayed at the home, 00:09:00.24\00:09:02.27 their condition become worst, 00:09:02.30\00:09:04.11 and people don't really love her 00:09:04.14\00:09:06.71 or they don't take her in this family. 00:09:06.74\00:09:09.84 So it is must for us to go forward 00:09:09.88\00:09:14.28 and find children 00:09:14.32\00:09:15.88 and sponsorship for them 00:09:15.92\00:09:18.42 especially is very much mean to them, 00:09:18.45\00:09:22.12 because people like Akhila 00:09:22.16\00:09:25.19 who are visually impaired 00:09:25.23\00:09:27.36 needs to have this kind of education 00:09:27.40\00:09:29.80 in this part of Andhra Pradesh. 00:09:29.83\00:09:31.27 The child is the center of Child Impact's work, 00:09:31.30\00:09:34.77 whether one is able to contribute 00:09:34.80\00:09:36.30 in a small way or in a big way, 00:09:36.34\00:09:38.61 sponsorship endows these children's future, 00:09:38.64\00:09:41.11 giving them the life they deserve. 00:09:41.14\00:09:43.55 Child Impact's work with these special needs 00:09:43.58\00:09:45.85 children also has a much bigger impact in the community. 00:09:45.88\00:09:50.15 Our special schools have a special impact, 00:09:50.19\00:09:53.12 and the reality is that many people 00:09:53.15\00:09:55.46 at all levels of society are becoming now at work 00:09:55.49\00:09:59.13 through these special homes and schools. 00:09:59.16\00:10:02.06 So they are impacting the child, 00:10:02.10\00:10:04.00 the family, and the community 00:10:04.03\00:10:06.27 with what Christianity 00:10:06.30\00:10:08.00 and Seventh-day Adventist are all about. 00:10:08.04\00:10:10.61 Special needs ministries is an area in which 00:10:10.64\00:10:14.61 we are very, very interested and very proactively working, 00:10:14.64\00:10:18.55 helping the world feel to understand 00:10:18.58\00:10:20.68 that there are many people 00:10:20.72\00:10:22.28 in various areas and sectors of the population 00:10:22.32\00:10:25.55 that have not been touched. 00:10:25.59\00:10:27.36 Special needs ministries and Child Impact 00:10:27.39\00:10:30.49 is also extremely helpful to God's church, 00:10:30.53\00:10:33.86 because those who are physically impaired, 00:10:33.90\00:10:38.57 those who are visually impaired, 00:10:38.60\00:10:40.80 or perhaps hearing impaired, they are the individuals 00:10:40.84\00:10:44.87 that are being wonderfully serviced 00:10:44.91\00:10:47.31 through Child Impact in India, 00:10:47.34\00:10:50.05 in other places, six different countries 00:10:50.08\00:10:53.25 that Child Impact is active in. 00:10:53.28\00:10:56.52 You know, the Lord really wants us to attract, 00:10:56.55\00:11:00.09 and be friendly to, and help 00:11:00.12\00:11:03.12 those who are the least of these, 00:11:03.16\00:11:06.09 and they in turn will then become 00:11:06.13\00:11:08.56 great missionaries for the Lord within their sector 00:11:08.60\00:11:12.23 and people group. 00:11:12.27\00:11:13.60 Thanks to the generous support of Child Impact 00:11:13.64\00:11:16.10 and its sponsors, 00:11:16.14\00:11:17.47 blind children like Akhila not only have a place 00:11:17.51\00:11:20.31 where they can acquire life skills for the world outside, 00:11:20.34\00:11:23.24 but they have a place where they can prepare 00:11:23.28\00:11:25.08 their souls for the world to come. 00:11:25.11\00:11:26.65 A key mission school in Bangladesh, 00:11:32.75\00:11:35.26 where Child Impact has many sponsored children 00:11:35.29\00:11:38.69 has an urgent need for a multipurpose building. 00:11:38.73\00:11:41.90 The current building, which you can see here, 00:11:41.93\00:11:44.60 is over 20 years old and was poorly constructed. 00:11:44.63\00:11:48.74 It is extremely dangerous. 00:11:48.77\00:11:51.84 I'm Jim Rennie, 00:11:51.87\00:11:53.21 CEO of Child Impact International. 00:11:53.24\00:11:56.04 And recently I visited the school 00:11:56.08\00:11:58.75 and I was able to confirm with an engineer 00:11:58.78\00:12:01.62 that traveled with me, 00:12:01.65\00:12:03.12 the critical state of the building. 00:12:03.15\00:12:05.72 The school Kellogg-Mookerjee Memorial Seminary 00:12:05.75\00:12:09.76 has over 450 students, including, as I said, 00:12:09.79\00:12:14.23 many sponsored by Child Impact. 00:12:14.26\00:12:16.60 The school is a key mission outreach 00:12:16.63\00:12:19.23 and serves a very poor community. 00:12:19.27\00:12:22.24 Simply put, this building is dangerous. 00:12:22.27\00:12:25.47 We need to build a new three storied building. 00:12:25.51\00:12:28.41 And in this building, 00:12:28.44\00:12:29.78 it will house over eight classrooms, 00:12:29.81\00:12:32.98 a science laboratory, a school library, 00:12:33.01\00:12:36.55 school administration offices, 00:12:36.58\00:12:38.92 but more important a new English medium school 00:12:38.95\00:12:42.49 right at the front adjoining the road 00:12:42.52\00:12:45.03 where we have multi level English training school. 00:12:45.06\00:12:48.83 This will attract fee paying day students 00:12:48.86\00:12:52.23 and will drive urgently needed revenue for the school. 00:12:52.27\00:12:57.34 The total cost including the fed out, 00:12:57.37\00:12:59.71 library, science lab, and English training school 00:12:59.74\00:13:03.38 is about $520,000. 00:13:03.41\00:13:06.05 And to date, Child Impact has reached $350,000. 00:13:06.08\00:13:11.25 Right now we're asking you to help us, 00:13:11.29\00:13:14.26 any amount would be great. 00:13:14.29\00:13:16.22 But the exciting thing is that we have a generous donor 00:13:16.26\00:13:20.06 who will match $1 for $1. 00:13:20.10\00:13:22.46 So each $1 you give will be turned into $2. 00:13:22.50\00:13:26.74 If you give $1,000 he will match it with $1,000. 00:13:26.77\00:13:31.04 It includes large or small donations. 00:13:31.07\00:13:34.21 We are able to double your giving. 00:13:34.24\00:13:36.44 This is a very special school that serves a poor community 00:13:36.48\00:13:40.55 and has over 50 orphans. 00:13:40.58\00:13:42.98 The need for the classrooms, library, 00:13:43.02\00:13:45.79 science lab is critical to the children graduating. 00:13:45.82\00:13:50.03 The English training school 00:13:50.06\00:13:51.99 will be critical revenue for the school. 00:13:52.03\00:13:54.73 Realistically the current building is dangerous 00:13:54.76\00:13:57.70 and must be replaced.
