Lanka, 00:00:27.26\00:00:31.23 Myanmar, and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:31.26\00:00:34.56 For the last 50 years, 00:00:34.60\00:00:36.06 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people 00:00:36.10\00:00:39.07 and their investment is proving infinite returns, 00:00:39.10\00:00:41.97 driven by the dedication to helping those 00:00:42.00\00:00:44.34 who have the least. 00:00:44.37\00:00:45.71 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:45.74\00:00:47.71 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:47.74\00:00:49.68 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:49.71\00:00:52.28 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.31\00:00:54.35 Their outreach expands from child rescue operations, 00:00:54.38\00:00:57.45 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:00:57.49\00:01:00.49 and the blind children 00:01:00.52\00:01:01.86 giving them a sense of place, a home, 00:01:01.89\00:01:04.63 but above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:04.66\00:01:08.56 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:08.60\00:01:11.87 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:11.90\00:01:14.50 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:14.54\00:01:16.20 The Immanuel English School in Jeypore, India 00:01:42.36\00:01:44.90 is a boarding school that has over 700 students. 00:01:44.93\00:01:48.47 This large school facility was built in 2006, 00:01:48.50\00:01:51.41 largely to support and educate poor tribal children 00:01:51.44\00:01:54.28 from Adventist backgrounds in this region. 00:01:54.31\00:01:56.28 Eight-years-old Suraj Harijan 00:02:11.66\00:02:13.66 is a second-grade student at the school. 00:02:13.70\00:02:15.70 And Arun Panda, the school principal, 00:02:15.73\00:02:18.07 took us to the village 00:02:18.10\00:02:19.43 where we met with Suraj's mother Pramila. 00:02:19.47\00:02:21.67 Her husband had died two years ago, 00:02:21.70\00:02:23.77 and soon after 00:02:23.81\00:02:25.14 the family came to live with Suraj's grandparents. 00:02:25.17\00:02:27.91 Suraj's father was suffering from fits, 00:02:42.32\00:02:45.36 and he was taking so many medicines, 00:02:45.39\00:02:48.00 but there was no cure. 00:02:48.03\00:02:50.47 So one day, he went to a nearby pond 00:02:50.50\00:02:53.13 and he suddenly he was attacked with fits 00:02:53.17\00:02:56.50 and he fell down there. 00:02:56.54\00:02:57.87 There was less water, 00:02:57.91\00:02:59.24 but there was no one around and he was drowned in the pond. 00:02:59.27\00:03:03.14 And that is how he expired. 00:03:03.18\00:03:05.68 And after that, 00:03:05.71\00:03:07.05 her mother is staying with her brother 00:03:07.08\00:03:09.58 in a nearby village. 00:03:09.62\00:03:10.95 Fits is what epilepsy 00:03:14.12\00:03:15.62 is commonly referred to in India. 00:03:15.66\00:03:17.79 Suraj's father suffered a convulsion 00:03:17.83\00:03:19.96 while he was bathing in a village pond. 00:03:20.00\00:03:22.30 Although, the water was only knee deep, 00:03:22.33\00:03:24.40 there was no one around to help, 00:03:24.43\00:03:26.00 and he drowned 00:03:26.03\00:03:27.37 leaving Suraj's mother widowed at a young age. 00:03:27.40\00:03:30.74 For the life of widow 00:03:30.77\00:03:33.04 in our Indian culture, 00:03:33.07\00:03:34.61 especially those women who are in a small village, 00:03:34.64\00:03:38.85 a traditional village, 00:03:38.88\00:03:40.68 it is very, very difficult. 00:03:40.72\00:03:42.88 Life becomes almost like a curse we can say, 00:03:42.92\00:03:47.16 where the widows, they need to have to depend on someone 00:03:47.19\00:03:51.13 for any little help. 00:03:51.16\00:03:52.76 They become helpless. 00:03:52.79\00:03:54.13 And the more children they have, 00:03:54.16\00:03:55.73 the more burden they have. 00:03:55.76\00:03:57.50 And in some families, 00:03:57.53\00:03:58.87 the in-laws or their brother-in-laws, 00:03:58.90\00:04:01.04 sister-in-laws, they never take care of them. 00:04:01.07\00:04:03.74 And indeed, they try to put, 00:04:03.77\00:04:08.24 you know, negative allegations on the widow. 00:04:08.28\00:04:12.38 And everyone, since there is no husband, 00:04:12.41\00:04:14.82 they feel that they can say anything 00:04:14.85\00:04:16.69 because there is no one to support them. 00:04:16.72\00:04:18.89 So their life becomes really tragedy. 00:04:18.92\00:04:21.96 So being a woman, 00:04:21.99\00:04:23.46 I know how they undergo, 00:04:23.49\00:04:27.13 what stigma they undergo 00:04:27.16\00:04:28.50 in the Indian traditional village. 00:04:28.53\00:04:31.13 Although they had a house of their own, it was unlivable. 00:04:44.25\00:04:47.28 Monsoon rains had destroyed a portion 00:04:47.32\00:04:49.68 of their tiny thatch-roofed mud house, 00:04:49.72\00:04:51.92 and living in it was impractical and insecure. 00:04:51.95\00:04:54.92 Unable to repair the house 00:04:54.96\00:04:56.52 and not having a safe place to live, 00:04:56.56\00:04:58.53 Suraj's mother moved into her brother's house. 00:04:58.56\00:05:03.57 When husband dies, 00:05:03.60\00:05:06.94 the mother is not secure. 00:05:06.97\00:05:09.60 And the main breadwinner for the family is the husband. 00:05:09.64\00:05:12.81 So after the husband dies, 00:05:12.84\00:05:14.68 the mother was helpless. 00:05:14.71\00:05:16.75 Suraj's uncle 00:05:16.78\00:05:19.31 who has recently joined as a staff in our school, 00:05:19.35\00:05:23.79 he told us 00:05:23.82\00:05:25.25 that his sister's condition is pathetic 00:05:25.29\00:05:30.29 and especially the children need help. 00:05:30.33\00:05:33.43 And so he was the one 00:05:33.46\00:05:35.10 who contacted us 00:05:35.13\00:05:37.47 and then we were able to get Suraj 00:05:37.50\00:05:41.50 to come to this institution, 00:05:41.54\00:05:43.34 and we are happy that he is sponsored, 00:05:43.37\00:05:45.54 and now Suraj is studying in this institution. 00:05:45.57\00:05:50.28 Suraj's uncle, Manoj Dayalu 00:05:50.31\00:05:53.01 had just joined as a teaching staff 00:05:53.05\00:05:54.82 at the Immanuel School during this time. 00:05:54.85\00:05:56.82 And he requested the school administration 00:05:56.85\00:05:58.65 to help his nephew get admission at the school. 00:05:58.69\00:06:02.62 If Suraj did not come to the school to study, 00:06:02.66\00:06:07.03 he would have spent his childhood 00:06:07.06\00:06:09.50 roaming around in the village and playing. 00:06:09.53\00:06:12.63 After few years, 00:06:12.67\00:06:14.50 he would have helped his mother, 00:06:14.54\00:06:17.81 he would have done some work, 00:06:17.84\00:06:19.91 and he would have spent his remaining life 00:06:19.94\00:06:23.71 as a daily labor. 00:06:23.75\00:06:25.08 Suraj is small now, but I could see, 00:06:28.15\00:06:31.82 he is a very active and clever child, 00:06:31.85\00:06:34.52 studious child. 00:06:34.56\00:06:35.89 He is doing very good in his studies. 00:06:35.92\00:06:37.29 And in near future, I know he will stand on his feet 00:06:37.33\00:06:40.50 and he's going to take care of his mother 00:06:40.53\00:06:42.63 and the little sister that he has, 00:06:42.66\00:06:44.70 and the mother also need not to depend 00:06:44.73\00:06:46.70 on his brother or other relatives. 00:06:46.74\00:06:48.87 And this boy is... 00:06:48.90\00:06:50.24 I'm sure, he's going to take care of his mother 00:06:50.27\00:06:52.07 and his little sister when he grows up. 00:06:52.11\00:06:57.05 Suraj is fortunate 00:06:57.08\00:06:58.41 to have received sponsorship through Child Impact. 00:06:58.45\00:07:00.92 Sponsorship for boys, like Suraj, 00:07:00.95\00:07:02.78 is like lighting a candle in the darkness. 00:07:02.82\00:07:05.09 And his sponsor has lit this candle, 00:07:05.12\00:07:07.06 not only for him 00:07:07.09\00:07:08.42 but for his widowed mother as well. 00:07:08.46\00:07:10.96 When we talk about children 00:07:10.99\00:07:12.59 and helping children and impacting on children, 00:07:12.63\00:07:15.03 and the Child Impact is only the conduit. 00:07:15.06\00:07:19.27 We help you, the sponsor, connect with the child 00:07:19.30\00:07:23.94 and the two of you 00:07:23.97\00:07:25.67 are the people that transform this world. 00:07:25.71\00:07:28.28 So we are here to serve you 00:07:28.31\00:07:30.25 as sponsors to do the best for you, 00:07:30.28\00:07:32.71 ensure that the policies 00:07:32.75\00:07:34.12 and the guidelines of the procedures 00:07:34.15\00:07:35.75 are in place. 00:07:35.78\00:07:37.19 So what you give out of your generosity 00:07:37.22\00:07:40.09 is used to the best effect. 00:07:40.12\00:07:42.86 They impact the child 00:07:42.89\00:07:44.23 in the most profound way possible 00:07:44.26\00:07:46.93 and create the best opportunities. 00:07:46.96\00:07:48.83 So to our sponsors, you are on one side, 00:07:48.86\00:07:51.57 the key player in this whole picture 00:07:51.60\00:07:53.80 and the child is the other. 00:07:53.84\00:07:55.17 We are just the canvas. 00:07:55.20\00:07:56.77 You guys paint the picture. 00:07:56.81\00:07:58.97 So thank you for your sponsorship. 00:07:59.01\00:08:00.94 It is making a brighter picture for all these children. 00:08:00.98\00:08:05.78 She says, "In this village and everywhere, 00:08:32.94\00:08:36.88 widow's life is very difficult. 00:08:36.91\00:08:39.18 And I was struggling, 00:08:39.21\00:08:41.15 but someone whom I don't know 00:08:41.18\00:08:43.82 came forward to help my son Suraj 00:08:43.85\00:08:46.59 to get an education in good school. 00:08:46.62\00:08:50.86 So like me, there are so many in surrounding villages 00:08:50.89\00:08:54.73 and everywhere, and they too are struggling. 00:08:54.76\00:08:58.33 I wish more people will come forward 00:08:58.37\00:09:01.30 and give such help as they have given to my son. 00:09:01.34\00:09:07.64 And I would like to thank all of them." 00:09:07.68\00:09:09.41 That is what she said. 00:09:09.44\00:09:10.78 The growing realization of the need 00:09:17.49\00:09:19.25 to support many such single parents 00:09:19.29\00:09:21.32 and their children can be overwhelming, 00:09:21.36\00:09:23.32 but it is reassuring to know that with sponsorship, 00:09:23.36\00:09:26.03 we can go about making a difference 00:09:26.06\00:09:27.76 one day at a time. 00:09:27.80\00:09:31.33 Today, Child Impact continues to fulfill its commitment 00:09:31.37\00:09:34.97 to the welfare of children who are in need, 00:09:35.00\00:09:37.47 providing them education through sponsorship, 00:09:37.51\00:09:39.91 giving them hope, and a chance for a better life. 00:09:39.94\00:09:42.64 Imagine with me for a moment 00:09:55.52\00:09:57.53 that you're a small child living on the streets of India, 00:09:57.56\00:10:00.73 the sandals on your feet lost their comfort weeks ago, 00:10:00.76\00:10:04.30 your favorite shirt just got another hole. 00:10:04.33\00:10:07.30 It's sad, mommy died last year 00:10:07.34\00:10:09.34 but what makes you feel even worse 00:10:09.37\00:10:11.71 is that your dad 00:10:11.74\00:10:13.07 chose not to be your dad anymore. 00:10:13.11\00:10:15.71 Hey, I'm Shawn Boonstra, 00:10:15.74\00:10:17.08 Honorary Ambassador for Child Impact International, 00:10:17.11\00:10:20.45 an organization that is a supportive ministry 00:10:20.48\00:10:22.95 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:10:22.98\00:10:24.99 Something like 15 to 25 million little girls and boys in India 00:10:25.02\00:10:29.29 share similar stories to the one I just told you. 00:10:29.32\00:10:32.49 Many are orphaned at a young age 00:10:32.53\00:10:34.10 with little food to eat and no hope. 00:10:34.13\00:10:37.30 Child Impact serves to bridge the gap 00:10:37.33\00:10:39.33 between hardship and education. 00:10:39.37\00:10:42.70 It's a unique ministry that serves children in poverty 00:10:42.74\00:10:45.81 in Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. 00:10:45.84\00:10:50.81 Over three and a half thousand children 00:10:50.85\00:10:53.72 are provided an Adventist education 00:10:53.75\00:10:55.85 and lives are changed 00:10:55.88\00:10:57.35 through the numerous development projects. 00:10:57.39\00:10:59.99 Working in these countries, 00:11:00.02\00:11:01.92 Child Impact has come face to face 00:11:01.96\00:11:04.06 with issues like child slavery, poor or no education, 00:11:04.09\00:11:08.53 child trafficking, abandoned babies, 00:11:08.56\00:11:11.70 lack of clean water, and a high number of orphans. 00:11:11.73\00:11:15.50 This list is not short on challenges, 00:11:15.54\00:11:18.54 yet the needs are being met. 00:11:18.57\00:11:20.74 You know, my family sponsors Sheila, a young lady 00:11:20.78\00:11:23.68 at the Sunrise Orphanage in India. 00:11:23.71\00:11:25.98 For the past couple of years, 00:11:26.01\00:11:27.65 I'm proud of how my family has been able 00:11:27.68\00:11:29.85 to impact her life for the better. 00:11:29.88\00:11:32.65 Word has it, she just started college. 00:11:32.69\00:11:36.52 What I've come to understand 00:11:36.56\00:11:38.29 is that the children Child Impact supports 00:11:38.33\00:11:41.66 are more than just names, or faces on a screen, 00:11:41.70\00:11:44.40 or a flyer, 00:11:44.43\00:11:45.97 they're people with a story, 00:11:46.00\00:11:48.70 a story whose ending has not been written, 00:11:48.74\00:11:51.87 instead another chapter is being composed. 00:11:51.91\00:11:55.71 It reminds me of something that Jesus once said, 00:11:55.74\00:11:58.38 "Whatever you do 00:11:58.41\00:11:59.75 for the least of these brothers and sisters of Mine, 00:11:59.78\00:12:02.38 you do for Me." 00:12:02.42\00:12:04.65 Join me and others like me throughout the world 00:12:04.69\00:12:08.16 who are sponsoring a child monthly 00:12:08.19\00:12:10.49 to provide like Jesus did, 00:12:10.53\00:12:12.56 to support like Jesus did, 00:12:12.59\00:12:14.80 to love like Jesus did. 00:12:14.83\00:12:17.23 You too can make a lifelong impact 00:12:17.27\00:12:19.70 on the life of someone 00:12:19.73\00:12:21.07 who is waiting for you to say yes. 00:12:21.10\00:12:23.30 Yes, today you will consider sponsorship right now 00:12:23.34\00:12:26.88 with Child Impact or one of our other projects. 00:12:26.91\00:12:29.78 Yes, to give hope to a precious child today. 00:12:29.81\00:12:33.65 Sponsoring children in activities 00:12:42.99\00:12:47.26 like these mission schools and opportunities 00:12:47.30\00:12:50.63 is a tremendous way 00:12:50.67\00:12:52.67 to help form the character of young people 00:12:52.70\00:12:56.54 as they look to the future. 00:12:56.57\00:12:58.07 They will never forget their association 00:12:58.11\00:13:01.18 in a Christian environment. 00:13:01.21\00:13:03.08 And by God's grace, 00:13:03.11\00:13:04.45 many of them will become 00:13:04.48\00:13:06.11 members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:13:06.15\00:13:08.78 It is absolutely a powerful witness 00:13:08.82\00:13:12.29 to sponsor a child in Child Impact 00:13:12.32\00:13:15.69 and so many other organizations 00:13:15.72\00:13:18.79 that help young people to find Jesus. 00:13:18.83\00:13:23.30 Sponsoring a child not only has short-term effects 00:13:23.33\00:13:27.80 but it has a long-term effect. 00:13:27.84\00:13:30.74 Sponsoring a child is investing 00:13:30.77\00:13:33.04 in the character of a young person for eternity. 00:13:33.07\00:13:36.95 We're taping this right here in Myanmar, 00:13:36.98\00:13:40.25 at the Myanmar Union Adventist Seminary, 00:13:40.28\00:13:43.65 and about one-third of the students 00:13:43.69\00:13:46.29 or one quarter of the students 00:13:46.32\00:13:48.36 are being sponsored by Child Impact. 00:13:48.39\00:13:51.39 People who become workers in God's church, 00:13:51.43\00:13:55.16 people who make an impact in the community 00:13:55.20\00:13:58.27 have been people who have been sponsored. 00:13:58.30\00:14:01.27 Your sponsorship is absolutely an investment 00:14:01.30\00:14:05.27 in the future of the church.
