Child Impact International is an organization giving hope, 00:00:07.27\00:00:11.17 previously called Asian Aid. 00:00:11.21\00:00:13.17 Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:13.21\00:00:15.88 fostering permanent positive change 00:00:15.91\00:00:18.18 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:18.21\00:00:20.22 and their communities. 00:00:20.25\00:00:21.82 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:21.85\00:00:24.32 in the lives of children and those who are in need. 00:00:24.35\00:00:27.06 Serving communities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, 00:00:27.09\00:00:31.33 Myanmar, and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:31.36\00:00:34.50 For the last 50 years, 00:00:34.53\00:00:36.06 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people 00:00:36.10\00:00:39.13 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:00:39.17\00:00:41.97 Driven by their dedication 00:00:42.00\00:00:43.34 to helping those who have the least, 00:00:43.37\00:00:45.54 Child Impact is an organization 00:00:45.57\00:00:47.68 focused on the welfare of children, 00:00:47.71\00:00:49.78 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:49.81\00:00:52.31 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:52.35\00:00:54.35 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:54.38\00:00:57.45 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:00:57.49\00:01:00.49 and the blind children, 00:01:00.52\00:01:01.86 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:01:01.89\00:01:04.59 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:04.63\00:01:08.56 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:08.60\00:01:11.93 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:11.97\00:01:14.54 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:14.57\00:01:17.11 In remote villages in India where poverty is a way of life, 00:01:20.01\00:01:23.55 going to a school and receiving an education 00:01:23.58\00:01:26.15 can have a dramatic impact on a child's life, 00:01:26.18\00:01:28.75 especially a girl child. 00:01:28.78\00:01:30.92 Child Impact International 00:01:30.95\00:01:32.55 has been sponsoring children's education in India 00:01:32.59\00:01:35.12 for nearly 10years now, 00:01:35.16\00:01:36.79 focusing on helping children from poor backgrounds 00:01:36.83\00:01:39.49 attend Adventist schools. 00:01:39.53\00:01:41.33 The Immanuel English School in Jeypore 00:01:41.36\00:01:43.70 in the state of Odisha is one such school 00:01:43.73\00:01:46.13 where Child Impact has made a real difference. 00:01:46.17\00:01:48.67 One of the schools that we're really proud of 00:01:48.70\00:01:51.14 school where the donors have made a real difference 00:01:51.17\00:01:54.38 is the Immanuel School of Jeypore. 00:01:54.41\00:01:57.05 I think it's got over 700 children, 00:01:57.08\00:01:59.88 and those children getting a quality of education, 00:01:59.91\00:02:03.15 they're well-disciplined, they're wearing a uniform, 00:02:03.18\00:02:06.65 but the amazing thing is 00:02:06.69\00:02:08.56 that they come from a very poor tribal areas. 00:02:08.59\00:02:12.39 And this school was established with that in mind, 00:02:12.43\00:02:15.46 that it would take children from poor tribal areas 00:02:15.50\00:02:18.73 who really don't have much of a chance 00:02:18.77\00:02:21.04 and give them a reasonable quality education. 00:02:21.07\00:02:24.41 And that's what Jeypore does. 00:02:24.44\00:02:26.27 Jeypore and most parts of Odisha 00:02:26.31\00:02:28.88 come under the so-called Tribal Belt of India 00:02:28.91\00:02:31.25 where people live unaffected by civilizing influences, 00:02:31.28\00:02:34.32 largely cut off from the mainstream societies. 00:02:34.35\00:02:37.22 They live in remote regions 00:02:37.25\00:02:38.62 with little or no basic amenities. 00:02:38.65\00:02:40.82 Life is a struggle 00:02:40.86\00:02:42.19 and the plight of the children from these communities 00:02:42.22\00:02:43.96 can only be described as deplorable. 00:02:43.99\00:02:46.26 Sending their children to school 00:02:46.29\00:02:47.90 is not in the minds of parents 00:02:47.93\00:02:49.26 who struggle to provide the needs 00:02:49.30\00:02:50.67 for their children. 00:02:50.70\00:02:52.03 Sulochana Diyari 00:02:52.07\00:02:53.40 is 10-grade student at the school. 00:02:53.44\00:02:55.37 She comes from Mitaput, 00:02:55.40\00:02:56.84 a small tribal village about 30 minutes drive 00:02:56.87\00:02:59.21 from the school. 00:02:59.24\00:03:00.81 Her parents are farmers who own a small patch of land, 00:03:00.84\00:03:03.78 cultivating whatever is possible 00:03:03.81\00:03:05.31 during the monsoon season. 00:03:05.35\00:03:07.82 He says he has half acre of land 00:03:07.85\00:03:10.29 where they grow vegetables and some crops. 00:03:10.32\00:03:13.39 When they are done with the work, 00:03:13.42\00:03:15.56 they, both husband and wife go to find some odd jobs 00:03:15.59\00:03:19.49 to support the family. 00:03:19.53\00:03:21.53 The family has four girls, 00:03:21.56\00:03:25.03 and out of these, two are studying in our school 00:03:25.07\00:03:28.57 and two are at home. 00:03:28.60\00:03:30.54 And in Indian culture, 00:03:30.57\00:03:33.38 if there are girls in the family, 00:03:33.41\00:03:36.98 it is a matter of concern, 00:03:37.01\00:03:38.85 especially when they don't have money, 00:03:38.88\00:03:41.48 when they are poor. 00:03:41.52\00:03:42.88 And the parents find it difficult 00:03:42.92\00:03:44.35 to educate them. 00:03:44.39\00:03:47.86 And the girls don't have any option. 00:03:47.89\00:03:49.69 They grow up... When they grow up... 00:03:49.72\00:03:52.29 When they are little bigger, even those girls 00:03:52.33\00:03:54.46 who are living with parents, 00:03:54.50\00:03:56.13 they too go with them as daily laborers. 00:03:56.16\00:03:59.53 And once they attain certain age, 00:03:59.57\00:04:03.41 then they get them married. 00:04:03.44\00:04:07.88 Sulochana is the oldest of four girls in the family. 00:04:07.91\00:04:10.81 In a gender biased world, 00:04:10.85\00:04:12.41 bringing up four little girls in a rural community 00:04:12.45\00:04:14.78 can be a burden, for the parents 00:04:14.82\00:04:16.35 and girls grow up with all the pressures 00:04:16.38\00:04:18.02 of the society. 00:04:18.05\00:04:19.39 But education can change these perceptions 00:04:19.42\00:04:21.66 and make them more aware of the world outside. 00:04:21.69\00:04:25.53 Education can transform a girl child. 00:04:25.56\00:04:29.70 Sulochana and her sister 00:04:29.73\00:04:31.73 who are getting educated in our institution, 00:04:31.77\00:04:34.84 their lives are transformed. 00:04:34.87\00:04:37.47 They no longer will depend on the parents. 00:04:37.51\00:04:41.18 They no longer will depend on the traditions 00:04:41.21\00:04:43.81 that they need to get married at a certain age. 00:04:43.85\00:04:46.92 They have their own choice. 00:04:46.95\00:04:48.42 They study and they have a good future. 00:04:48.45\00:04:52.35 They can earn. 00:04:52.39\00:04:54.16 And so they are not dependent on their parents, 00:04:54.19\00:04:56.66 but they become independent. 00:04:56.69\00:04:59.89 And in turn, they are the ones who will be able 00:04:59.93\00:05:02.90 to guide these illiterate and poor parents. 00:05:02.93\00:05:08.04 A sense of freedom and self-belief 00:05:08.07\00:05:10.07 that education instills in a child 00:05:10.11\00:05:11.91 is there for everyone to see. 00:05:11.94\00:05:13.64 For the school administration and teachers 00:05:13.68\00:05:15.64 to see their students grow into fine young men and women, 00:05:15.68\00:05:18.51 it's gratifying, 00:05:18.55\00:05:19.88 and they are proud of the association they have 00:05:19.91\00:05:21.68 with these children. 00:05:21.72\00:05:23.05 The first time I met Sulochana, she was very small girl 00:05:23.08\00:05:26.99 and she was shy. 00:05:27.02\00:05:29.36 But as I see her, 00:05:29.39\00:05:31.03 she is growing into a very young woman 00:05:31.06\00:05:33.76 and very active. 00:05:33.80\00:05:35.13 She takes part in all the school activities. 00:05:35.16\00:05:38.13 And one year, she served as a sick monitor 00:05:38.17\00:05:41.10 and took good care of the sick girls, 00:05:41.14\00:05:43.44 and she is very helpful to her little sister 00:05:43.47\00:05:45.81 who is also studying in this school. 00:05:45.84\00:05:48.21 And I'm so happy to say 00:05:48.24\00:05:50.05 that I see lot of development in her. 00:05:50.08\00:05:53.25 Although Sulochana's parents, like many in rural India, 00:05:53.28\00:05:56.25 struggle to earn two dollars a day 00:05:56.28\00:05:57.89 and cannot afford to send their children to school, 00:05:57.92\00:06:00.36 they do view education as a catalyst for change. 00:06:00.39\00:06:03.63 In a developing country, 00:06:03.66\00:06:05.29 it's very hard to break the poverty cycle. 00:06:05.33\00:06:08.13 And one of the key ways of giving child a chance 00:06:08.16\00:06:11.73 to break their poverty cycle is giving them an education. 00:06:11.77\00:06:15.60 The reality is that they don't have that education 00:06:15.64\00:06:19.21 that really locked in to what's available 00:06:19.24\00:06:21.91 back in the village, and the reality not a lot. 00:06:21.94\00:06:25.35 So the education gives them a chance 00:06:25.38\00:06:27.58 of breaking out into a far better career, job, 00:06:27.62\00:06:33.12 which once again impacts their family 00:06:33.15\00:06:35.79 because most of them 00:06:35.82\00:06:37.16 do give money back to their family 00:06:37.19\00:06:39.23 once they get a job. 00:06:39.26\00:06:41.00 Often these parents have not had an education themselves, 00:06:41.03\00:06:44.50 so understanding the value of education 00:06:44.53\00:06:47.04 is not there either. 00:06:47.07\00:06:48.50 So often these families don't promote education, 00:06:48.54\00:06:52.57 don't support them. 00:06:52.61\00:06:53.94 When these children come home from school, 00:06:53.98\00:06:55.78 can they do any homework with them? 00:06:55.81\00:06:57.15 No, they don't have the ability. 00:06:57.18\00:06:58.98 So the ability for these families, 00:06:59.01\00:07:01.15 the really poor families, 00:07:01.18\00:07:02.95 to help the child is non-existence... 00:07:02.98\00:07:05.59 non-existent. 00:07:05.62\00:07:06.96 They are striving, they are struggling 00:07:06.99\00:07:08.32 to get food to eat. 00:07:08.36\00:07:09.92 If they get one meal a day, they're doing well. 00:07:09.96\00:07:11.79 So where is the opportunity for them to help the child 00:07:11.83\00:07:14.46 to break out? 00:07:14.50\00:07:15.86 So Child Impact helps these children 00:07:15.90\00:07:21.17 who really don't have a supporting environment, 00:07:21.20\00:07:23.34 not that the parents don't want it, 00:07:23.37\00:07:24.74 they just don't know how to. 00:07:24.77\00:07:26.81 So Child Impact gives these children 00:07:26.84\00:07:29.24 the opportunity to make the difference. 00:07:29.28\00:07:33.65 Today, over 3,000 children in India 00:07:33.68\00:07:36.48 are sponsored by Child Impact, 00:07:36.52\00:07:38.39 and because of their commitment to the welfare of children, 00:07:38.42\00:07:41.02 especially children from tribal communities 00:07:41.06\00:07:42.92 and villages, 00:07:42.96\00:07:44.29 these children are reaping the benefits 00:07:44.33\00:07:45.66 of an Adventist education. 00:07:45.69\00:07:47.13 Without sponsorship, 00:07:47.16\00:07:48.96 many of the poor children 00:07:49.00\00:07:51.27 and especially Adventist children 00:07:51.30\00:07:53.40 they'll be... 00:07:53.44\00:07:54.77 They'll remain backward, 00:07:54.80\00:07:56.74 they'll remain illiterate. 00:07:56.77\00:07:58.61 There have been so many requests 00:07:58.64\00:08:00.74 of Adventist parents, 00:08:00.78\00:08:02.88 coming and requesting for sponsorship. 00:08:02.91\00:08:05.48 So many times, we just refuse 00:08:05.51\00:08:08.38 saying that there is no sponsorship. 00:08:08.42\00:08:10.52 And without fees, we cannot keep them 00:08:10.55\00:08:13.59 because the school can't afford to educate. 00:08:13.62\00:08:16.42 We are educating a few of them 00:08:16.46\00:08:18.39 but we cannot educate many of them. 00:08:18.43\00:08:21.00 And that is how... 00:08:21.03\00:08:22.46 That is why we need sponsorship and without sponsorship, 00:08:22.50\00:08:26.97 these children will not have a future. 00:08:27.00\00:08:28.90 Sulochana and her sister Moumita 00:08:28.94\00:08:30.97 have been sponsored by Child Impact 00:08:31.01\00:08:32.87 ever since they came to live and attend school 00:08:32.91\00:08:35.01 at Immanuel English School in Jeypore. 00:08:35.04\00:08:37.58 For girls like Sulochana, 00:08:37.61\00:08:39.11 attending school and receiving an education 00:08:39.15\00:08:41.22 is a blessing, 00:08:41.25\00:08:42.58 and without sponsorship, 00:08:42.62\00:08:43.95 she and her sister would face an uncertain future. 00:08:43.99\00:08:46.15 He says that they're very happy that their two children... 00:08:48.49\00:08:52.39 Somebody is helping them to study. 00:08:52.43\00:08:54.86 And he says with his financial problem, 00:08:54.90\00:08:59.23 he would have never been able to send his two daughters 00:08:59.27\00:09:02.47 to the school. 00:09:02.50\00:09:03.84 And he is so thankful to whoever is helping them 00:09:03.87\00:09:07.68 for the studies, 00:09:07.71\00:09:09.04 and he's grateful to them and he says 00:09:09.08\00:09:11.55 that I pray to the God to bless them 00:09:11.58\00:09:14.12 and give them good health and strength. 00:09:14.15\00:09:16.52 Moumita Malik lives with her grandparents. 00:09:22.22\00:09:24.83 She lost her mother 00:09:24.86\00:09:26.19 when she was just a little baby, 00:09:26.23\00:09:27.56 and her father abandoned her. 00:09:27.60\00:09:29.86 When a child is orphaned or abandoned 00:09:29.90\00:09:31.67 at such a young age, 00:09:31.70\00:09:33.03 the unfortunate burden of caring for them 00:09:33.07\00:09:35.20 falls upon their elderly grandparents, 00:09:35.24\00:09:37.11 who barely have any means to support them. 00:09:37.14\00:09:39.87 This is Moumita's grandmother. 00:09:39.91\00:09:41.94 Her daughter was married 00:09:41.98\00:09:43.78 and when the baby was born after six months, 00:09:43.81\00:09:46.18 the in-laws and husband 00:09:46.21\00:09:47.78 started ill treating Moumita's mother. 00:09:47.82\00:09:50.75 So the grandparents brought their daughter 00:09:50.79\00:09:54.39 and Moumita to their home. 00:09:54.42\00:09:56.49 And after a year, she felt sick and had a kidney problem, 00:09:56.52\00:10:01.03 so she died. 00:10:01.06\00:10:02.83 Seeing the elderly couple 00:10:02.86\00:10:04.20 struggle with their granddaughter, 00:10:04.23\00:10:05.60 a government employee from the village 00:10:05.63\00:10:06.97 who had knowledge 00:10:07.00\00:10:08.34 about the Adventist boarding school 00:10:08.37\00:10:09.70 at Jeypore suggested Moumita be taken there. 00:10:09.74\00:10:12.91 Like a majority of students at Immanuel School, 00:10:12.94\00:10:15.48 Moumita received sponsorship through Child Impact. 00:10:15.51\00:10:19.25 Our sponsorship obviously gives the child an education, 00:10:19.28\00:10:22.68 but has a real impact on the family. 00:10:22.72\00:10:26.62 You can't imagine living in poverty, 00:10:26.65\00:10:28.72 struggling day to day to feed your children. 00:10:28.76\00:10:31.99 So first of all, the parents were just so excited 00:10:32.03\00:10:34.96 that their child's getting an education. 00:10:35.00\00:10:37.77 But it also brings relief to the family 00:10:37.80\00:10:40.20 because in many cases, 00:10:40.24\00:10:41.97 the children go to boarding school, 00:10:42.00\00:10:43.51 and so they know their child is being fed, 00:10:43.54\00:10:46.88 they know their child is being looked after. 00:10:46.91\00:10:49.44 And then when the child comes back to the village, 00:10:49.48\00:10:51.95 they have a stronger willingness to work. 00:10:51.98\00:10:54.25 And in fact, when they come back 00:10:54.28\00:10:55.62 as older students, 00:10:55.65\00:10:57.19 they can do things around the village. 00:10:57.22\00:10:59.25 They can help with English. 00:10:59.29\00:11:01.39 They can help people with computers. 00:11:01.42\00:11:03.66 It has a dramatic effect on the impact of the family, 00:11:03.69\00:11:07.03 and in turn their community. 00:11:07.06\00:11:11.10 Grandparents like these, it is quite difficult 00:11:11.13\00:11:13.90 to take care of their grandchildren 00:11:13.94\00:11:16.64 who have no parents. 00:11:16.67\00:11:18.07 So if Moumita would not be in the school, 00:11:18.11\00:11:20.74 she would just go for manual labor 00:11:20.78\00:11:23.01 when she is at the age of working. 00:11:23.04\00:11:25.58 And later on, 00:11:25.61\00:11:27.18 when the time would have come for marriage, 00:11:27.22\00:11:29.62 that's the life. 00:11:29.65\00:11:30.99 There would be no bright future 00:11:31.02\00:11:32.52 if she didn't have the opportunity 00:11:32.55\00:11:33.89 to study in this school. 00:11:33.92\00:11:36.66 Life in rural India is simple. 00:11:36.69\00:11:38.89 During the day, people either go to the fields 00:11:38.93\00:11:40.93 or graze what little livestock they have. 00:11:40.96\00:11:43.23 There is a clear order of social precedents 00:11:43.26\00:11:45.30 based on gender. 00:11:45.33\00:11:46.67 And women have little or no say in its structure, 00:11:46.70\00:11:48.97 often leading to unjust practices and misery. 00:11:49.00\00:11:52.17 If it weren't for Immanuel School 00:11:52.21\00:11:53.78 and the timely intervention of Child Impact, 00:11:53.81\00:11:56.28 girls like Moumita and Sulochana 00:11:56.31\00:11:58.25 would have seen misfortunes 00:11:58.28\00:11:59.68 of so many young girls like them in their villages. 00:11:59.71\00:12:02.92 So what do you want to do when you finish your studies? 00:12:02.95\00:12:07.26 I want to be a nurse. 00:12:07.29\00:12:08.79 Nurse? Yes. 00:12:08.82\00:12:10.16 Why? 00:12:10.19\00:12:11.53 Because my grandmother aim is that to... 00:12:11.56\00:12:16.03 Oh, your grandmother's aim is that you become a nurse. 00:12:16.06\00:12:18.80 Yes. Okay. 00:12:18.83\00:12:20.44 And what would you like to tell your sponsors, 00:12:20.47\00:12:22.74 you know, if they see this, 00:12:22.77\00:12:24.11 what would you like to tell them? 00:12:24.14\00:12:26.88 I'd like to thank them from the bottom of my heart 00:12:26.91\00:12:30.45 because when I'm small, from that time, 00:12:30.48\00:12:32.78 they take care of me and... 00:12:32.81\00:12:35.08 When I came here, they help me, for that I'm really happy. 00:12:35.12\00:12:41.62 If they could not help me, 00:12:41.66\00:12:42.99 I could not have been here at this time 00:12:43.02\00:12:44.89 because my parents, they cannot pay any money. 00:12:44.93\00:12:48.93 For that, I thank them from my heart. 00:12:48.96\00:12:55.24 Sulochana's emotions are testimony 00:12:55.27\00:12:57.71 to what a simple gesture 00:12:57.74\00:12:59.14 of sponsoring a child's education can achieve. 00:12:59.17\00:13:02.68 To our sponsors of Child Impact, 00:13:02.71\00:13:04.71 we thank you for your generosity. 00:13:04.75\00:13:07.05 Every smile we get to see on the face of a child, 00:13:07.08\00:13:10.12 every anxiety removed from a parent's life, 00:13:10.15\00:13:13.36 and every folded hand that are grateful, 00:13:13.39\00:13:15.76 bear witness to your kindness and good will. 00:13:15.79\00:13:18.39 Thank you. 00:13:18.43\00:13:19.76 You are making a difference. 00:13:19.79\00:13:22.20 I just got a letter 00:13:30.61\00:13:31.94 from our sponsored daughter Sheila. 00:13:31.97\00:13:33.68 I've got to tell you, 00:13:33.71\00:13:35.04 there is nothing like getting one of these letters. 00:13:35.08\00:13:37.55 Our family has been able to sponsor her 00:13:37.58\00:13:39.41 through Child Impact International. 00:13:39.45\00:13:41.55 Because of that, 00:13:41.58\00:13:42.92 she's got a great place to live. 00:13:42.95\00:13:44.35 She's got good food. 00:13:44.39\00:13:45.72 She's got great clothing. 00:13:45.75\00:13:47.26 Best of all, I now found out she's in college. 00:13:47.29\00:13:50.53 She's in nursing school. 00:13:50.56\00:13:52.23 There's nothing like getting a letter like this. 00:13:52.26\00:13:55.50 You need to start getting these letters too. 00:13:55.53\00:13:57.57 Listen, through Child Impact, you can make a huge difference 00:13:57.60\00:14:01.10 in the life of a child, 00:14:01.14\00:14:02.64 and I promise you, 00:14:02.67\00:14:04.04 it's going to make a huge difference 00:14:04.07\00:14:05.74 in your life too. 00:14:05.77\00:14:07.14
