In today's episode of Hope in Motion, 00:00:19.51\00:00:21.72 we visit Sulochana and her family 00:00:21.75\00:00:23.92 and see how sponsorship in education 00:00:23.95\00:00:26.02 is not only helping Sulochana realize her dreams 00:00:26.05\00:00:28.82 but helping ease her family's burden. 00:00:28.86\00:00:31.46 We spent a few days at the Immanuel English School 00:00:31.49\00:00:34.00 in Jeypore, India 00:00:34.03\00:00:35.36 and learned how it not only provides education 00:00:35.40\00:00:37.53 to children from poor tribal communities 00:00:37.57\00:00:39.83 but helps provide shelter to boys like Suraj Harijan. 00:00:39.87\00:00:43.41 Children are our future. 00:00:59.29\00:01:02.16 They are full of dreams and desires. 00:01:02.19\00:01:04.89 But in a world of unspeakable despair, 00:01:04.93\00:01:07.10 these ignited minds live in poverty and privation, 00:01:07.13\00:01:10.13 helpless and hopeless. 00:01:10.17\00:01:11.90 Child Impact International is an organization giving hope. 00:01:15.37\00:01:19.21 It is an organization fostering permanent positive change 00:01:19.24\00:01:22.61 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:01:22.64\00:01:24.65 and those who are in need, 00:01:24.68\00:01:27.12 serving communities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, 00:01:27.15\00:01:30.79 Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and beyond. 00:01:30.82\00:01:34.39 For the last 15 years, 00:01:34.42\00:01:36.29 Child Impact has invested in the futures of children, 00:01:36.32\00:01:39.43 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:01:39.46\00:01:42.40 Driven by their dedication 00:01:42.43\00:01:44.03 to helping those who have the least, 00:01:44.07\00:01:46.43 Child Impact is an organization 00:01:46.47\00:01:48.34 focused on the welfare of children, 00:01:48.37\00:01:51.01 implementing diverse development projects 00:01:51.04\00:01:53.38 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:01:53.41\00:01:56.48 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:01:56.51\00:01:59.41 to providing an education for orphans, 00:01:59.45\00:02:01.85 deaf and the blind children, 00:02:01.88\00:02:04.32 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:02:04.35\00:02:07.89 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:02:07.92\00:02:12.13 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:02:12.16\00:02:16.46 giving hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:02:16.50\00:02:19.50 This is Hope in Motion. 00:02:24.31\00:02:26.61 Education can transform a person's life. 00:02:47.46\00:02:50.40 In remote villages in India where poverty is a way of life, 00:02:50.43\00:02:54.00 going to a school and receiving an education 00:02:54.04\00:02:56.54 can have a dramatic impact on a child's life, 00:02:56.57\00:02:59.21 especially a girl child. 00:02:59.24\00:03:01.28 Child Impact International 00:03:01.31\00:03:02.94 has been sponsoring children's education in India 00:03:02.98\00:03:05.48 for nearly 10 years now, 00:03:05.51\00:03:07.15 focusing on helping children from poor backgrounds 00:03:07.18\00:03:09.98 attend Adventist schools. 00:03:10.02\00:03:12.45 It has also been instrumental in assisting these schools 00:03:12.49\00:03:14.89 to achieve its potential 00:03:14.92\00:03:16.32 to complement its sponsorship program. 00:03:16.36\00:03:18.66 The Immanuel English School in Jeypore 00:03:18.69\00:03:21.10 in the state of Odisha is one such school 00:03:21.13\00:03:23.50 where Child Impact has made a real difference. 00:03:23.53\00:03:26.94 One of the schools that we're really proud of 00:03:26.97\00:03:29.37 school where the donors have made a real difference 00:03:29.40\00:03:32.27 is the Immanuel School of Jeypore. 00:03:32.31\00:03:35.11 I think it's got over 700 children, 00:03:35.14\00:03:38.05 and those children getting a quality of education, 00:03:38.08\00:03:41.28 they're well-disciplined, they're wearing a uniform, 00:03:41.32\00:03:44.75 but the amazing thing is that 00:03:44.79\00:03:47.02 they come from very poor tribal areas. 00:03:47.06\00:03:50.43 And this school was established with that in mind, 00:03:50.46\00:03:53.53 that it would take children from poor tribal areas 00:03:53.56\00:03:56.83 who really don't have much of a chance 00:03:56.87\00:03:59.13 and give them a reasonable quality education. 00:03:59.17\00:04:02.57 And that's what Jeypore does. 00:04:02.60\00:04:04.47 It's just really amazing to go there 00:04:04.51\00:04:06.81 and see the children. 00:04:06.84\00:04:08.48 And if you could just go home with one child 00:04:08.51\00:04:11.18 and see what they go home to, 00:04:11.21\00:04:13.15 you'd see the difference it's making on their lives 00:04:13.18\00:04:16.02 as well as getting an education. 00:04:16.05\00:04:17.82 Jeypore and most parts of Odisha 00:04:22.82\00:04:25.39 come under the so-called Tribal Belt of India 00:04:25.43\00:04:27.86 where people live unaffected by civilizing influences, 00:04:27.90\00:04:30.97 largely cut off from the mainstream societies. 00:04:31.00\00:04:33.80 They live in remote regions 00:04:33.84\00:04:35.27 with little or no basic amenities. 00:04:35.30\00:04:37.61 Life is a struggle 00:04:37.64\00:04:38.97 and the plight of the children from these communities 00:04:39.01\00:04:40.68 can only be described as deplorable. 00:04:40.71\00:04:43.08 Sending their children to school 00:04:43.11\00:04:44.51 is not in the minds of parents 00:04:44.55\00:04:45.91 who struggle to provide the needs for their children. 00:04:45.95\00:04:48.58 The Immanuel English School was established in Jeypore 00:04:48.62\00:04:51.49 to bring in children from these backward communities 00:04:51.52\00:04:54.02 and provide them with a good quality education. 00:04:54.06\00:04:56.69 Sulochana Diyari is 10-grade student at the school. 00:05:22.28\00:05:25.89 She comes from Mitaput, a small tribal village 00:05:25.92\00:05:28.32 about 30 minutes drive from the school. 00:05:28.36\00:05:31.09 Her parents are farmers who own a small patch of land, 00:05:31.13\00:05:34.06 cultivating whatever is possible 00:05:34.10\00:05:35.73 during the monsoon season. 00:05:35.76\00:05:37.10 He says he has half acre of land 00:05:47.88\00:05:50.45 where they grow vegetables and some crops. 00:05:50.48\00:05:53.48 When they are done with the work, 00:05:53.52\00:05:55.62 they both husband and wife 00:05:55.65\00:05:57.59 go to find some odd jobs to support the family. 00:05:57.62\00:06:03.32 The family has four girls, 00:06:03.36\00:06:06.70 and out of these, two are studying in our school 00:06:06.73\00:06:10.40 and two are at home. 00:06:10.43\00:06:12.33 And in Indian culture, 00:06:12.37\00:06:15.14 if there are girls in the family, 00:06:15.17\00:06:18.77 it is a matter of concern, 00:06:18.81\00:06:20.58 especially when they don't have money, 00:06:20.61\00:06:23.04 when they are poor. 00:06:23.08\00:06:26.11 And the parents find it difficult to educate them. 00:06:26.15\00:06:31.05 And the girls don't have any option. 00:06:31.09\00:06:32.99 They grow up... When they grow up... 00:06:33.02\00:06:35.62 When they are little bigger, 00:06:35.66\00:06:36.99 even those girls who are living with parents, 00:06:37.03\00:06:39.46 they too go with them as daily laborers. 00:06:39.49\00:06:42.76 And once they attain certain age, 00:06:42.80\00:06:46.70 then they get them married. 00:06:46.74\00:06:49.37 Sulochana is the oldest of four girls in the family. 00:06:55.88\00:06:58.78 In a gender biased world, 00:06:58.81\00:07:00.38 bringing up four little girls in a rural community 00:07:00.42\00:07:02.75 can be a burden, for the parents 00:07:02.78\00:07:04.49 and girls grow up with all the pressures of the society. 00:07:04.52\00:07:07.19 But education can change these perceptions 00:07:07.22\00:07:09.72 and make them more aware of the world outside. 00:07:09.76\00:07:13.60 Education can transform a girl child. 00:07:13.63\00:07:17.77 Sulochana and her sister 00:07:17.80\00:07:19.77 who are getting educated in our institution, 00:07:19.80\00:07:22.90 their lives are transformed. 00:07:22.94\00:07:25.57 They no longer will depend on the parents. 00:07:25.61\00:07:29.18 They no longer will depend on the traditions 00:07:29.21\00:07:31.71 that they need to get married at a certain age. 00:07:31.75\00:07:34.88 They have their own choice. 00:07:34.92\00:07:36.45 They study and they have a good future. 00:07:36.48\00:07:40.39 They can earn. 00:07:40.42\00:07:42.12 And so they are not dependent on their parents, 00:07:42.16\00:07:44.63 but they become independent. 00:07:44.66\00:07:48.00 And in turn, they are the ones 00:07:48.03\00:07:49.96 who will be able to guide these illiterate and poor parents. 00:07:50.00\00:07:56.07 A sense of freedom and self-belief 00:07:56.10\00:07:58.11 that education instills in a child 00:07:58.14\00:08:00.04 is there for everyone to see. 00:08:00.08\00:08:01.64 For the school administration and teachers 00:08:01.68\00:08:03.75 to see their students grow into fine young men and women, 00:08:03.78\00:08:06.48 it's gratifying, and they are proud of the association 00:08:06.51\00:08:09.32 they have with these children. 00:08:09.35\00:08:13.09 The first time I met Sulochana, she was very small girl and she 00:08:13.12\00:08:17.09 was shy. 00:08:17.13\00:08:19.33 But as I see her, 00:08:19.36\00:08:21.16 she is growing into as very young woman and very active. 00:08:21.20\00:08:25.20 She takes part in all the school activities. 00:08:25.23\00:08:28.20 And one year, she served as a sick monitor 00:08:28.24\00:08:30.94 and took good care of the sick girls, 00:08:30.97\00:08:33.54 and she is very helpful to her little sister 00:08:33.58\00:08:35.94 who is also studying in this school. 00:08:35.98\00:08:38.28 And I'm so happy to say that 00:08:38.31\00:08:40.42 I see a lot of development in her. 00:08:40.45\00:08:42.48 Although Sulochana's parents, like many in rural India, 00:08:45.69\00:08:48.72 struggle to earn two dollars a day 00:08:48.76\00:08:50.73 and cannot afford to send their children to school. 00:08:50.76\00:08:52.96 They do view education as a catalyst for change. 00:08:52.99\00:08:57.30 Well, the reality is, John, in a developing country, 00:08:57.33\00:09:00.70 it's very hard to break the poverty cycle. 00:09:00.74\00:09:03.54 And one of the key ways of giving child a chance 00:09:03.57\00:09:07.04 to break their poverty cycle is giving them an education. 00:09:07.08\00:09:11.15 The reality is that they don't have that education 00:09:11.18\00:09:14.62 that really locked in to what's available back in the village, 00:09:14.65\00:09:18.65 and the reality not a lot. 00:09:18.69\00:09:20.79 So the education gives them a chance of breaking out 00:09:20.82\00:09:24.53 into a far better career, job, 00:09:24.56\00:09:28.53 which once again impacts their family 00:09:28.56\00:09:31.23 because most of them do give money back to their family 00:09:31.27\00:09:34.67 once they get a job. 00:09:34.70\00:09:37.41 Well, if the parents don't have the insights and the ability 00:09:37.44\00:09:41.78 to encourage them and to send them to school, 00:09:41.81\00:09:44.61 often these parents have not had an education themselves, 00:09:44.65\00:09:48.05 so understanding the value of education is not there either. 00:09:48.08\00:09:52.05 So often these families don't promote education, 00:09:52.09\00:09:56.12 don't support them. 00:09:56.16\00:09:57.49 When these children come home from school, 00:09:57.53\00:09:59.19 can they do any homework with them? 00:09:59.23\00:10:00.76 No, they don't have the ability. 00:10:00.80\00:10:02.50 So the ability for these families, 00:10:02.53\00:10:04.67 the really poor families, 00:10:04.70\00:10:06.33 to help the child is non-existence... 00:10:06.37\00:10:09.17 non-existent. 00:10:09.20\00:10:10.54 They are striving, 00:10:10.57\00:10:11.91 they are struggling to get food to eat. 00:10:11.94\00:10:13.44 If they get one meal a day, they're doing well. 00:10:13.48\00:10:15.41 So where is the opportunity for them 00:10:15.44\00:10:17.11 to help the child to break out? 00:10:17.15\00:10:19.41 So Child Impact helps these children 00:10:19.45\00:10:24.79 who really don't have a supporting environment, 00:10:24.82\00:10:26.96 not that the parents don't want it, 00:10:26.99\00:10:28.32 they just don't know how to. 00:10:28.36\00:10:30.33 So Child Impact gives these children 00:10:30.36\00:10:32.69 the opportunity to make the difference. 00:10:32.73\00:10:37.20 Today, over 3,000 children in India 00:10:37.23\00:10:40.10 are sponsored by Child Impact, 00:10:40.14\00:10:41.94 and because of their commitment to the welfare of children, 00:10:41.97\00:10:44.57 especially children from tribal communities 00:10:44.61\00:10:46.54 and villages, 00:10:46.57\00:10:47.91 these children are reaping the benefits 00:10:47.94\00:10:49.28 of an Adventist education. 00:10:49.31\00:10:52.18 Sponsorship is very important for this institution. 00:10:52.21\00:10:55.52 Without sponsorship, many of the poor children 00:10:55.55\00:10:59.72 and especially Adventist children, they'll be... 00:10:59.75\00:11:03.69 They'll remain backward, they'll remain illiterate. 00:11:03.73\00:11:06.90 There have been so many requests of Adventist parents, 00:11:06.93\00:11:11.33 coming and requesting for sponsorship. 00:11:11.37\00:11:13.84 So many times, 00:11:13.87\00:11:15.70 we just refuse saying that there is no sponsorship. 00:11:15.74\00:11:18.87 And without fees, we cannot keep them 00:11:18.91\00:11:22.04 because the school can't afford to educate. 00:11:22.08\00:11:24.78 We are educating a few of them 00:11:24.81\00:11:26.75 but we cannot educate many of them. 00:11:26.78\00:11:29.45 And that is how... 00:11:29.48\00:11:30.85 That is why we need sponsorship and without sponsorship, 00:11:30.89\00:11:35.46 these children will not have a future. 00:11:35.49\00:11:39.63 Sulochana and her sister Moumita 00:11:39.66\00:11:41.70 had been sponsored by Child Impact 00:11:41.73\00:11:43.53 ever since they came to live and attend school 00:11:43.57\00:11:45.73 at Immanuel English School in Jeypore. 00:11:45.77\00:11:48.30 For girls like Sulochana, 00:11:48.34\00:11:49.77 attending school and receiving an education is a blessing, 00:11:49.80\00:11:52.94 and without sponsorship, 00:11:52.97\00:11:54.31 she and her sister would face an uncertain future. 00:11:54.34\00:11:56.88 He says that they're very happy that their two children... 00:12:11.56\00:12:15.46 Somebody is helping them to study. 00:12:15.50\00:12:17.87 And he says with his financial problem, 00:12:17.90\00:12:22.17 he would have never been able to send 00:12:22.20\00:12:24.64 his two daughters to the school. 00:12:24.67\00:12:26.61 And he is so thankful 00:12:26.64\00:12:27.98 to whoever is helping them for the studies, 00:12:28.01\00:12:31.88 and he's grateful to them and he says that 00:12:31.91\00:12:34.78 I pray to the God to bless them 00:12:34.82\00:12:37.12 and give them good health and strength. 00:12:37.15\00:12:38.99 Moumita Malik lives with her grandparents. 00:12:57.14\00:12:59.77 She lost her mother 00:12:59.81\00:13:01.14 when she was just a little baby, 00:13:01.18\00:13:02.51 and her father abandoned her. 00:13:02.54\00:13:04.85 When a child is orphaned or abandoned 00:13:04.88\00:13:06.72 at such a young age, 00:13:06.75\00:13:08.08 the unfortunate burden of caring for them 00:13:08.12\00:13:10.12 falls upon their elderly grandparents, 00:13:10.15\00:13:12.15 who barely have any means to support them. 00:13:12.19\00:13:14.42 This is Moumita's grandmother. 00:13:18.59\00:13:20.63 Her daughter was married 00:13:20.66\00:13:22.33 and when the baby was born after six months, 00:13:22.36\00:13:24.93 the in-laws and husband started ill treating Moumita's mother. 00:13:24.97\00:13:29.47 So the grandparents brought 00:13:29.50\00:13:32.31 their daughter and Moumita to their home. 00:13:32.34\00:13:35.04 And after a year, she felt sick and had a kidney problem, 00:13:35.08\00:13:39.75 so she died. 00:13:39.78\00:13:41.12 Seeing the elderly couple 00:13:43.89\00:13:45.22 struggle with their granddaughter, 00:13:45.25\00:13:46.62 a government employee from the village 00:13:46.65\00:13:48.29 who had knowledge about 00:13:48.32\00:13:49.66 the Adventist boarding school at Jeypore 00:13:49.69\00:13:51.69 suggested Moumita be taken there. 00:13:51.73\00:13:54.00 Like a majority of students at Immanuel School, 00:13:54.03\00:13:56.60 Moumita received sponsorship through Child Impact. 00:13:56.63\00:14:00.44 Our sponsorship obviously gives the child an education, 00:14:00.47\00:14:03.77 but has a real impact on the family. 00:14:03.81\00:14:07.74 You can't imagine living in poverty, 00:14:07.78\00:14:09.84 struggling day to day to feed your children. 00:14:09.88\00:14:13.05 So first of all, the parents were just so excited 00:14:13.08\00:14:15.98 that their child's getting an education. 00:14:16.02\00:14:18.85 But it also brings relief to the family 00:14:18.89\00:14:21.22 because in many cases, 00:14:21.26\00:14:23.02 the children go to boarding school, 00:14:23.06\00:14:24.89 and so they know their child is being fed, 00:14:24.93\00:14:27.83 they know their child is being looked after. 00:14:27.86\00:14:30.43 And then when the child comes back to the village, 00:14:30.47\00:14:33.00 they have a stronger willingness to work. 00:14:33.03\00:14:35.40 And in fact, when they come back as older students, 00:14:35.44\00:14:38.17 they can do things around the village. 00:14:38.21\00:14:40.34 They can help with English. 00:14:40.38\00:14:42.48 They can help people with computers. 00:14:42.51\00:14:44.71 It has a dramatic effect on the impact of the family, 00:14:44.75\00:14:48.12 and in turn their community. 00:14:48.15\00:14:52.09 Grandparents like these, it is quite difficult 00:14:52.12\00:14:54.92 to take care of their grandchildren 00:14:54.96\00:14:57.69 who have no parents. 00:14:57.73\00:14:59.19 So if Moumita would not be in the school, 00:14:59.23\00:15:01.86 she would just go for manual labor 00:15:01.90\00:15:04.13 when she is at the age of working. 00:15:04.17\00:15:06.60 And later on, when the time would have come for marriage, 00:15:06.63\00:15:10.71 that's the life. 00:15:10.74\00:15:12.07 There would be no bright future 00:15:12.11\00:15:13.61 if she didn't have the opportunity 00:15:13.64\00:15:14.98 to study in this school. 00:15:15.01\00:15:16.61 Life in rural India is simple. 00:15:22.32\00:15:24.32 During the day, 00:15:24.35\00:15:25.69 people either go to the fields or graze 00:15:25.72\00:15:27.32 what little livestock they have. 00:15:27.36\00:15:29.06 There is a clear order of social precedents 00:15:29.09\00:15:31.09 based on gender. 00:15:31.13\00:15:32.46 And women have little or no say in its structure, often 00:15:32.49\00:15:34.83 leading to unjust practices and misery. 00:15:34.86\00:15:37.97 If it weren't for Immanuel School 00:15:38.00\00:15:39.47 and the timely intervention of Child Impact, 00:15:39.50\00:15:42.00 girls like Moumita and Sulochana 00:15:42.04\00:15:44.11 would have seen misfortunes 00:15:44.14\00:15:45.47 of so many young girls like them in their villages. 00:15:45.51\00:15:48.11 So what do you want to do when you finish your studies? 00:15:51.25\00:15:55.52 I want to be a nurse. Nurse? 00:15:55.55\00:15:57.69 Yes. Why? 00:15:57.72\00:15:59.09 Because my grandmother aim is that to... 00:15:59.12\00:16:04.26 Oh, your grandmother's aim is that you become a nurse. 00:16:04.29\00:16:07.16 Yes. Okay. Very good. 00:16:07.20\00:16:09.16 And what would you like to tell your sponsors, 00:16:14.87\00:16:17.17 you know, if they see this, 00:16:17.21\00:16:18.54 what would you like to tell them? 00:16:18.57\00:16:21.34 I'd like to thank them from the bottom of my heart 00:16:21.38\00:16:24.91 because when I'm small, from that time, 00:16:24.95\00:16:27.22 they take care of me and. 00:16:27.25\00:16:29.28 And when I came here, 00:16:29.32\00:16:32.69 they help me, for that I'm really happy. 00:16:32.72\00:16:36.06 If they could not help me, 00:16:36.09\00:16:37.43 I could not have been here at this time 00:16:37.46\00:16:39.46 because my parents, they cannot pay any money. 00:16:39.49\00:16:43.37 For that, I thank them from my heart. 00:16:43.40\00:16:46.03 Sulochana's emotions are testimony 00:16:49.77\00:16:52.07 to what a simple gesture of sponsoring 00:16:52.11\00:16:54.11 a child's education can achieve. 00:16:54.14\00:16:57.38 To our sponsors of Child Impact, 00:16:57.41\00:16:59.35 we thank you for your generosity. 00:16:59.38\00:17:01.38 Every smile we get to see on the face of a child, 00:17:01.42\00:17:04.55 every anxiety removed from a parent's life, 00:17:04.59\00:17:07.86 and every folded hand that are grateful, 00:17:07.89\00:17:10.26 bear witness to your kindness and good will. 00:17:10.29\00:17:12.76 Thank you. 00:17:12.79\00:17:14.13 You are making a difference. 00:17:14.16\00:17:15.70 I just got a letter from our sponsored daughter Sheila. 00:17:26.81\00:17:29.61 And I've got to tell you, 00:17:29.64\00:17:30.98 there is nothing like getting one of these letters. 00:17:31.01\00:17:33.45 Our family has been able to sponsor her 00:17:33.48\00:17:35.38 through Child Impact International. 00:17:35.42\00:17:37.49 Because of that, 00:17:37.52\00:17:38.85 she's got a great place to live. 00:17:38.89\00:17:40.39 She's got good food. She's got great clothing. 00:17:40.42\00:17:43.29 Best of all, I now found out she's in college. 00:17:43.32\00:17:46.43 She's in nursing school. 00:17:46.46\00:17:48.33 There's nothing like getting a letter like this. 00:17:48.36\00:17:51.50 You need to start getting these letters too. 00:17:51.53\00:17:53.50 Listen, through Child Impact, 00:17:53.54\00:17:55.20 you can make a huge difference in the life of a child, 00:17:55.24\00:17:58.57 and I promise you, it's going to make 00:17:58.61\00:18:00.44 a huge difference in your life too. 00:18:00.48\00:18:02.61 At Adventist mission schools like this one in Bangladesh, 00:18:15.46\00:18:19.03 Child Impact International sponsors hundreds of children. 00:18:19.06\00:18:22.73 We often think that 00:18:22.76\00:18:24.10 sponsorship only impacts on the life of the child 00:18:24.13\00:18:27.70 but it's much wider than that. 00:18:27.74\00:18:29.60 It impacts on the parents and on the community, 00:18:29.64\00:18:33.07 but more important, it impacts on the school. 00:18:33.11\00:18:36.44 It becomes valuable income for the school, 00:18:36.48\00:18:39.58 and then in turn, 00:18:39.61\00:18:40.95 it impacts on hundreds of other children. 00:18:40.98\00:18:43.45 I just ask that 00:18:43.49\00:18:44.82 you would consider sponsoring a child with Child Impact 00:18:44.85\00:18:48.26 or supporting one of its valuable projects 00:18:48.29\00:18:51.03 that will improve education and Adventist mission schools 00:18:51.06\00:18:54.90 like this one right here. 00:18:54.93\00:18:56.43 The Immanuel English School in Jeypore, India 00:19:29.66\00:19:32.30 is a boarding school that has over 700 students. 00:19:32.33\00:19:35.80 This large school facility was built in 2006, 00:19:35.84\00:19:38.87 largely to support and educate poor tribal children 00:19:38.91\00:19:41.61 from Adventist backgrounds in this region. 00:19:41.64\00:19:43.58 Eight-years-old Suraj Harijan 00:19:59.03\00:20:00.96 is a second-grade student at the school. 00:20:01.00\00:20:03.16 And Arun Panda, the school principal, 00:20:03.20\00:20:05.23 took us to the village 00:20:05.27\00:20:06.60 where we met with Suraj's mother Pramila. 00:20:06.63\00:20:08.90 Her husband had died two years ago, 00:20:08.94\00:20:11.11 and soon after 00:20:11.14\00:20:12.47 the family came to live with Suraj's grandparents. 00:20:12.51\00:20:14.64 Suraj's father was suffering from fits, 00:20:29.66\00:20:32.79 and he was taking so many medicines, 00:20:32.83\00:20:35.30 but there was no cure. 00:20:35.33\00:20:37.77 So one day, he went to a nearby pond 00:20:37.80\00:20:40.47 and he suddenly he was attacked with fits 00:20:40.50\00:20:43.81 and he fell down there. 00:20:43.84\00:20:45.17 There was less water, 00:20:45.21\00:20:46.54 but there was no one around and he was drowned in the pond. 00:20:46.57\00:20:50.51 And that is how he expired. 00:20:50.55\00:20:53.01 And after that, 00:20:53.05\00:20:54.38 her mother is staying with her brother 00:20:54.42\00:20:56.99 in a nearby village. 00:20:57.02\00:20:58.35 Fits is what epilepsy is commonly referred to in India. 00:21:01.49\00:21:05.19 Suraj's father suffered a convulsion 00:21:05.23\00:21:07.36 while he was bathing in a village pond. 00:21:07.40\00:21:09.56 Although, the water was only knee deep, 00:21:09.60\00:21:11.77 there was no one around to help, and he drowned 00:21:11.80\00:21:14.30 leaving Suraj's mother widowed at a young age. 00:21:14.34\00:21:18.11 For the life of widow in our Indian culture, 00:21:18.14\00:21:21.94 especially those women 00:21:21.98\00:21:23.31 who are in a small village, a traditional village, 00:21:23.35\00:21:28.02 it is very, very difficult. 00:21:28.05\00:21:30.32 Life becomes almost like a curse we can say, 00:21:30.35\00:21:34.46 where the widows, they need to have to depend on someone 00:21:34.49\00:21:38.49 for any little help. 00:21:38.53\00:21:40.00 They become helpless. 00:21:40.03\00:21:41.53 And the more children they have, 00:21:41.56\00:21:43.00 the more burden they have. 00:21:43.03\00:21:44.83 And in some families, the in-laws 00:21:44.87\00:21:46.94 or their brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, 00:21:46.97\00:21:49.10 they never take care of them. 00:21:49.14\00:21:51.01 And indeed, they try to put, you know, 00:21:51.04\00:21:56.11 negative allegations on the widow. 00:21:56.14\00:21:59.68 And everyone, since there is no husband, 00:21:59.71\00:22:02.12 they feel that they can say anything 00:22:02.15\00:22:03.95 because there is no one to support them. 00:22:03.99\00:22:06.32 So their life becomes really tragedy. 00:22:06.35\00:22:09.22 So being a woman, I know how they undergo, 00:22:09.26\00:22:14.46 what stigma they undergo 00:22:14.50\00:22:15.83 in the Indian traditional village. 00:22:15.86\00:22:18.50 Although they had a house of their own, it was unlivable. 00:22:31.61\00:22:34.72 Monsoon rains had destroyed 00:22:34.75\00:22:36.45 a portion of their tiny thatch-roofed mud house, 00:22:36.48\00:22:39.29 and living in it was impractical and insecure. 00:22:39.32\00:22:42.36 Unable to repair the house 00:22:42.39\00:22:43.79 and not having a safe place to live, 00:22:43.83\00:22:45.86 Suraj's mother moved into her brother's house. 00:22:45.89\00:22:51.03 When husband dies, the mother is not secure. 00:22:51.07\00:22:56.94 And the main breadwinner for the family is the husband. 00:22:56.97\00:23:00.18 So after the husband dies, the mother was helpless. 00:23:00.21\00:23:04.11 Suraj's uncle 00:23:04.15\00:23:06.72 who has recently joined as a staff in our school, 00:23:06.75\00:23:11.19 he told us 00:23:11.22\00:23:12.62 that his sister's condition is pathetic 00:23:12.65\00:23:17.66 and especially the children need help. 00:23:17.69\00:23:20.80 And so he was the one who contacted us 00:23:20.83\00:23:24.80 and then we were able to get Suraj 00:23:24.83\00:23:28.94 to come to this institution, 00:23:28.97\00:23:30.77 and we are happy that he is sponsored, 00:23:30.81\00:23:32.81 and now Suraj is studying in this institution. 00:23:32.84\00:23:37.58 Suraj's uncle, Manoj Dayalu 00:23:37.61\00:23:40.35 had just joined as a teaching staff 00:23:40.38\00:23:42.12 at the Immanuel School during this time. 00:23:42.15\00:23:44.09 And he requested the school administration 00:23:44.12\00:23:45.92 to help his nephew get admission at the school. 00:23:45.95\00:23:50.09 If Suraj did not come to the school to study, 00:23:50.13\00:23:54.36 he would have spent his childhood 00:23:54.40\00:23:56.97 roaming around in the village and playing. 00:23:57.00\00:24:00.04 After few years, he would have helped his mother, 00:24:00.07\00:24:05.14 he would have done some work, 00:24:05.17\00:24:07.44 and he would have spent his remaining life 00:24:07.48\00:24:11.01 as a daily labor. 00:24:11.05\00:24:12.38 Suraj is small now, but I could see, 00:24:15.45\00:24:19.22 he is a very active and clever child, 00:24:19.25\00:24:21.72 studious child. 00:24:21.76\00:24:23.09 He is doing very good in his studies. 00:24:23.12\00:24:24.59 And in near future, 00:24:24.63\00:24:25.96 I know he will stand on his feet 00:24:25.99\00:24:27.83 and he's going to take care of his mother 00:24:27.86\00:24:29.96 and the little sister that he has, 00:24:30.00\00:24:32.03 and the mother also need not to depend 00:24:32.07\00:24:33.94 on his brother or other relatives. 00:24:33.97\00:24:36.20 And this boy is... 00:24:36.24\00:24:37.57 I'm sure, he's going to take care of his mother 00:24:37.61\00:24:39.57 and his little sister when he grows up. 00:24:39.61\00:24:44.38 Suraj is fortunate 00:24:44.41\00:24:45.75 to have received sponsorship through Child Impact. 00:24:45.78\00:24:48.15 Sponsorship for boys, like Suraj, 00:24:48.18\00:24:50.09 is like lighting a candle in the darkness. 00:24:50.12\00:24:52.42 And his sponsor has lit this candle, 00:24:52.45\00:24:54.39 not only for him 00:24:54.42\00:24:55.76 but for his widowed mother as well. 00:24:55.79\00:24:58.26 When we talk about children 00:24:58.29\00:24:59.83 and helping children and impacting on children, 00:24:59.86\00:25:02.33 and the Child Impact is only the conduit. 00:25:02.36\00:25:06.70 We help you, the sponsor, connect with the child 00:25:06.74\00:25:11.27 and the two of you are the people 00:25:11.31\00:25:13.61 that transform this world. 00:25:13.64\00:25:15.64 So we are here to serve you as sponsors 00:25:15.68\00:25:18.51 to do the best for you, 00:25:18.55\00:25:20.12 ensure that the policies and the guidelines 00:25:20.15\00:25:22.22 of the procedures are in place. 00:25:22.25\00:25:24.52 So what you give out of your generosity 00:25:24.55\00:25:27.46 is used to the best effect. 00:25:27.49\00:25:30.26 They impact the child in the most profound way possible 00:25:30.29\00:25:34.30 and create the best opportunities. 00:25:34.33\00:25:36.10 So to our, sponsors, you are on one side, 00:25:36.13\00:25:38.80 the key player in this whole picture 00:25:38.83\00:25:41.10 and the child is the other.
