hearing disabilities. 00:03:16.32\00:03:18.09 Since its beginning nearly 20 years ago, 00:03:18.13\00:03:20.36 it has provided quality education to deaf children 00:03:20.40\00:03:23.60 and has empowered them to stand on their own feet. 00:03:23.63\00:03:26.70 A majority of the students that attend the school 00:03:26.74\00:03:29.04 come from poor rural communities 00:03:29.07\00:03:30.94 around Kollegal town. 00:03:30.97\00:03:32.31 Life in rural India can be unimaginably difficult. 00:03:43.28\00:03:46.52 In a world where disability is viewed as a curse, 00:03:46.55\00:03:49.39 parents face the hostility and humiliation of the society 00:03:49.42\00:03:53.26 and their deaf child grows up neglected 00:03:53.29\00:03:55.26 and utterly hopeless. 00:03:55.30\00:03:58.00 Illiteracy, discrimination, 00:03:58.03\00:03:59.83 and unemployment is the story of India's deaf population, 00:03:59.87\00:04:03.34 but education can change this scenario dramatically. 00:04:03.37\00:04:07.64 Here at the school for speech and hearing in Kollegal, 00:04:07.68\00:04:10.28 simply known as the deaf school, 00:04:10.31\00:04:12.25 children are given the opportunity 00:04:12.28\00:04:13.75 for this dramatic change. 00:04:13.78\00:04:17.72 Divya Kemparaju is a sixth grade student 00:04:17.75\00:04:20.39 at the school. 00:04:20.42\00:04:21.76 She and her brother Mahalinga 00:04:21.79\00:04:23.29 came to the school five years ago. 00:04:23.32\00:04:27.26 Divya and her brother 00:04:27.30\00:04:28.70 came to our school five years back 00:04:28.73\00:04:30.40 along with her mother and grandfather. 00:04:30.43\00:04:33.64 They come from a very poor background 00:04:33.67\00:04:36.10 and they both were born deaf in the family. 00:04:36.14\00:04:39.47 And we found in the last five years 00:04:39.51\00:04:42.01 that they were here, 00:04:42.04\00:04:43.38 Divya is very, very smart, very good in her studies, 00:04:43.41\00:04:47.15 and in all the other activities of the school 00:04:47.18\00:04:50.15 very eager to participate, 00:04:50.19\00:04:52.25 a very bright prospect for the future. 00:04:52.29\00:04:56.42 Being born into a poor household 00:04:56.46\00:04:58.19 comes with its own deprivation and difficulties. 00:04:58.23\00:05:00.96 In such adverse circumstances, one can imagine the troubles 00:05:01.00\00:05:04.63 parents would go through 00:05:04.67\00:05:06.00 when two of their children are born deaf. 00:05:06.03\00:05:08.10 Eventually, Divya and her siblings 00:05:08.14\00:05:10.04 had to deal with the reality of their parents' separation 00:05:10.07\00:05:12.84 and came to live with their grandparents. 00:05:12.87\00:05:14.44 We came to know through Divya's mother 00:05:51.31\00:05:53.35 that Divya's mother and her husband 00:05:53.38\00:05:56.18 don't stay together anymore. 00:05:56.22\00:05:57.82 From the time that the children were very young, 00:05:57.85\00:06:01.86 they have lost their love and affection 00:06:01.89\00:06:04.26 from their father. 00:06:04.29\00:06:05.63 And though the children want to go 00:06:05.66\00:06:08.30 and visit the father's home, 00:06:08.33\00:06:10.23 they're not permitted to do so, 00:06:10.27\00:06:11.67 and they really miss their father a lot. 00:06:11.70\00:06:13.87 In fact, they have an elder brother 00:06:13.90\00:06:15.60 who is able to speak 00:06:15.64\00:06:17.11 and he's the only fatherly figure 00:06:17.14\00:06:19.77 at home actually. 00:06:19.81\00:06:22.31 Divya's older brother Raghavendra 00:06:22.34\00:06:24.75 has completed high school studies 00:06:24.78\00:06:26.48 and had a strong desire to go to college, 00:06:26.51\00:06:28.82 but seeing his mother struggle 00:06:28.85\00:06:30.35 and his grandfather unable to support him 00:06:30.39\00:06:32.22 after his retirement, 00:06:32.25\00:06:33.59 Raghavendra put an end to his higher studies 00:06:33.62\00:06:35.99 and took it upon himself to find a job 00:06:36.02\00:06:37.96 to support his family. 00:06:37.99\00:06:39.33 Poverty is a vicious cycle, 00:07:30.45\00:07:32.45 it truncates a child's dreams and desires 00:07:32.48\00:07:34.78 to greater achievement. 00:07:34.82\00:07:36.22 In a society where finding their basic needs 00:07:36.25\00:07:38.45 is a priority, 00:07:38.49\00:07:39.82 formal education is a luxury they can't afford. 00:07:39.85\00:07:42.62 Parents expect their teenage boys to work 00:07:42.66\00:07:44.86 and support the family. 00:07:44.89\00:07:46.39 Girls are relegated to the kitchen 00:07:46.43\00:07:47.86 and other household chores. 00:07:47.90\00:07:49.46 A girl child born with a disability 00:07:49.50\00:07:51.33 is just a burden. 00:07:51.37\00:07:55.17 You know, there are people who are poor, 00:07:55.20\00:07:58.41 who are really struggling to bring it up, 00:07:58.44\00:07:59.84 to look after their family and bring up their kids, 00:07:59.87\00:08:02.14 and then what happens if you're a girl in the family? 00:08:02.18\00:08:04.91 You know, where do you sit in the hierarchy? 00:08:04.95\00:08:07.18 How are you accepted in society? 00:08:07.22\00:08:09.62 Are the boys given education about the girls? 00:08:09.65\00:08:11.65 So straight away, the girls really have 00:08:11.69\00:08:13.82 an extra challenge here. 00:08:13.86\00:08:15.49 And imagine if that girl has a disability, 00:08:15.52\00:08:18.06 where does that person sit? 00:08:18.09\00:08:20.00 So the need to provide 00:08:20.03\00:08:23.06 special support for all children, 00:08:23.10\00:08:25.57 but especially for girls who have disabilities, 00:08:25.60\00:08:28.27 is an amazing opportunity to help them 00:08:28.30\00:08:32.44 because there is very little that can be done. 00:08:32.47\00:08:34.51 And if they are in their family environment, 00:08:34.54\00:08:37.78 they can't really contribute, 00:08:37.81\00:08:39.15 they can't work and contribute to their families, 00:08:39.18\00:08:40.88 so they're a real burden to the family. 00:08:40.92\00:08:42.85 So we can transform not just the child, 00:08:42.88\00:08:46.52 but the family as well by creating a whole new world 00:08:46.55\00:08:49.52 for this child and for the family. 00:08:49.56\00:08:53.50 You know, there are so many children 00:08:53.53\00:08:54.96 in the villages around India 00:08:55.00\00:08:57.53 where they don't have the opportunity 00:08:57.57\00:08:59.63 to have an education. 00:08:59.67\00:09:01.20 Only if they find a good place where they can study 00:09:01.24\00:09:04.87 and have an education, 00:09:04.91\00:09:06.24 will the potential of the child will be seen. 00:09:06.27\00:09:09.31 There are so many of them who are not able to have 00:09:09.34\00:09:11.51 that kind of an opportunity what Divya is having, 00:09:11.55\00:09:13.98 and we thank God that Divya's mother 00:09:14.02\00:09:16.99 was more than willing to bring the child here 00:09:17.02\00:09:19.35 to our school. 00:09:19.39\00:09:20.72 Usually, many of the parents 00:09:20.76\00:09:22.69 do not want to bring a girl child 00:09:22.72\00:09:24.16 to the school to have an education. 00:09:24.19\00:09:25.73 They feel that the girl should be at home 00:09:25.76\00:09:27.96 to take care of the husband 00:09:28.00\00:09:30.70 and to wash the dishes and to take care of the home, 00:09:30.73\00:09:32.93 they don't want to bring them to the school. 00:09:32.97\00:09:34.54 But we're so glad 00:09:34.57\00:09:35.90 that Divya's mother and her grandfather 00:09:35.94\00:09:38.17 decided to bring her to the school 00:09:38.21\00:09:39.64 and have this wonderful opportunity of education. 00:09:39.67\00:09:43.11 Divya's mother had to overcome 00:09:43.14\00:09:44.81 her psychological and emotional troubles of her domestic life 00:09:44.85\00:09:48.48 to see that her children to not suffer. 00:09:48.52\00:09:50.82 Although illiterate, she wanted to make sure 00:09:50.85\00:09:53.19 Divya and Mahalinga go to school. 00:09:53.22\00:09:55.89 In spite of their inability to hear or speak, 00:09:55.92\00:09:58.49 she believes attending a special needs school 00:09:58.53\00:10:00.90 and receiving a proper education 00:10:00.93\00:10:02.83 can help them stand on their own feet. 00:10:02.86\00:10:04.73 Since the time she joined the deaf school, 00:10:40.84\00:10:43.04 Divya has shown exceptional maturity 00:10:43.07\00:10:45.27 and proven to be a bright student. 00:10:45.31\00:10:48.68 Imagine somebody who is smart like Divya 00:10:48.71\00:10:52.18 stays back in the village, and we all know in the village, 00:10:52.21\00:10:56.92 it's a custom here to get them married so early, 00:10:56.95\00:11:00.19 and if they are girls especially, 00:11:00.22\00:11:01.72 they will be married. 00:11:01.76\00:11:03.26 If Divya happened to stay back in the village, 00:11:03.29\00:11:06.09 by now either should have been married 00:11:06.13\00:11:07.86 or she'll be doing all the household activities. 00:11:07.90\00:11:10.83 But coming to this school has become a blessing for her, 00:11:10.87\00:11:13.77 in turn, it is blessing for us to give her a good education. 00:11:13.80\00:11:19.01 Meeting Divya's family at their village, 00:11:19.04\00:11:21.11 it was clear her family loved her very much 00:11:21.14\00:11:23.98 and she loved her family. 00:11:24.01\00:11:25.71 Even though they live a minimalistic life, 00:11:25.75\00:11:28.08 hospitality was evident. 00:11:28.12\00:11:30.22 Seeing how they are with what they have 00:11:30.25\00:11:32.19 is such a blessing and a valuable lesson 00:11:32.22\00:11:34.36 to all those addicted to consumerism. 00:11:34.39\00:11:37.56 For someone like Divya, 00:11:37.59\00:11:39.09 having a loving family is a blessing. 00:11:39.13\00:11:41.60 Because her mother wanted the best for her, 00:11:41.63\00:11:43.90 she was willing to break away from the shackles 00:11:43.93\00:11:45.87 of her long observed customs and traditions 00:11:45.90\00:11:48.10 in regard to a girl child 00:11:48.14\00:11:49.64 and bring her to a school's boarding environment 00:11:49.67\00:11:51.94 just so she could give her the education 00:11:51.97\00:11:53.94 she otherwise would be unable to provide. 00:11:53.98\00:11:56.95 Divya's mother is so grateful that her two deaf children 00:11:56.98\00:11:59.88 have the opportunity to attend a special needs school 00:11:59.91\00:12:03.05 that caters to their sensitivities. 00:12:03.08\00:12:04.99 Although the pain of life struggle 00:12:05.02\00:12:06.99 was deep within her, 00:12:07.02\00:12:08.46 one could sense how happy she was 00:12:08.49\00:12:10.26 knowing that her children, 00:12:10.29\00:12:11.63 especially her daughter Divya is well taken care of, 00:12:11.66\00:12:14.56 and she is thankful to Divya's sponsors 00:12:14.60\00:12:16.67 for the positive impact they are having and a half years old 00:16:30.79\00:16:32.72 when he was brought to the school 00:16:32.75\00:16:34.09 for speech and hearing in Kollegal, India. 00:16:34.12\00:16:36.36 A special needs school for deaf children, 00:16:36.39\00:16:38.29 which is supported by Child Impact International. 00:16:38.33\00:16:40.86 When Advith came with his mother to our school, 00:16:57.21\00:16:59.91 he was just three and a half years old, 00:16:59.95\00:17:01.85 and we were wondering whether he'll be able to cope up 00:17:01.88\00:17:04.75 with the school routine. 00:17:04.79\00:17:06.55 But we were so much surprised, 00:17:06.59\00:17:08.42 the first day after his mother left him here and went, 00:17:08.46\00:17:11.09 he was telling bye to his mother 00:17:11.13\00:17:12.76 when she left. 00:17:12.79\00:17:14.36 And we saw that he was slowly learning 00:17:14.40\00:17:16.73 how to eat on his own and get along with the students 00:17:16.77\00:17:20.77 and follow the program of the school. 00:17:20.80\00:17:23.81 It's so amazing. 00:17:23.84\00:17:25.17 He was such a person who was able to adjust 00:17:25.21\00:17:28.24 with the other children very well, 00:17:28.28\00:17:30.55 00:17:36.25\00:17:37.69 you know, write the alphabets and, 00:17:37.72\00:17:40.32 you know, the numbers, and his teacher was showing me 00:17:40.36\00:17:42.66 and I was so encouraged. 00:17:42.69\00:17:44.03 If such a young child can do this, man, 00:17:44.06\00:17:47.00 miracles can happen over here. 00:17:47.03\00:17:48.36 Like Advith, a majority of children 00:18:00.54\00:18:02.74 that live and attend the school for the deaf 00:18:02.78\00:18:04.65 come from broken families. 00:18:04.68\00:18:07.28 When his father realized Advith would be deaf for life, 00:18:07.32\00:18:10.42 he abandoned his family 00:18:10.45\00:18:11.82 and demanded divorce from his wife. 00:18:11.85\00:18:13.79 Her husband began ill treating her 00:18:46.52\00:18:48.89 and his family became acrimonious toward her, 00:18:48.92\00:18:51.59 blaming her for her son's disability. 00:18:51.63\00:18:54.03 With no one to support her, 00:18:54.06\00:18:55.63 Advith's mother had to move into a small rented home 00:18:55.66\00:18:58.40 and deal with her ordeal all on her own. 00:18:58.43\00:19:01.34 For a young single mother like her, 00:19:01.37\00:19:03.30 it is not an ideal situation, 00:19:03.34\00:19:05.54 especially in a rural environment. 00:19:05.57\00:19:09.14 When I go to visit the homes of our children, 00:19:09.18\00:19:12.61 sometimes I feel so helpless. 00:19:12.65\00:19:14.45 What more can we do? 00:19:14.48\00:19:15.82 We are able to help the child to come up, 00:19:15.85\00:19:17.62 but there's literally nothing actually we can do 00:19:17.65\00:19:20.42 to change the situation of the family now. 00:19:20.46\00:19:24.49 And we hope that through the help 00:19:24.53\00:19:26.49 that Child Impact is doing to the child, 00:19:26.53\00:19:30.70 one day the child will be able to give hope to the parents 00:19:30.73\00:19:34.57 and make the life of the parents better. 00:19:34.60\00:19:36.57 Advith's mother being single 00:19:36.60\00:19:39.17 and literally not having any support 00:19:39.21\00:19:40.91 from her brother and brother's family 00:19:40.94\00:19:42.71 because the brother's wife is not so in favor of her 00:19:42.74\00:19:46.11 staying in with her brother, 00:19:46.15\00:19:47.88 so she has taken a separate home and, you know, 00:19:47.92\00:19:51.29 putting herself in risk of being misused by other men. 00:19:51.32\00:19:54.72 And we worry about such things but there's literally nothing 00:19:54.76\00:19:58.26 that we can actually do to change the situation. 00:19:58.29\00:20:01.86 Fortunately, Advith's mother came to know 00:20:01.90\00:20:04.17 about the school of speech and hearing 00:20:04.20\00:20:05.67 through an acquaintance and brought him to the school. 00:20:05.70\00:20:08.47 Understandably, she misses him at home, 00:20:08.50\00:20:10.57 but she can take comfort in the fact 00:20:10.61\00:20:12.11 that there is a school that provides her son 00:20:12.14\00:20:14.28 with not just a special education he needs, 00:20:14.31\00:20:16.88 but a school that provides him a safe and homely environment 00:20:16.91\00:20:19.71 to grow up in. 00:20:19.75\00:20:21.18 Sponsorship the special needs people, 00:23:44.15\00:23:45.89 and schools such as this deaf school 00:23:45.92\00:23:48.82 or the blind school, 00:23:48.86\00:23:50.19 helps us to have the focus of ministry 00:23:50.23\00:23:54.20 to such group of people. 00:23:54.23\00:23:57.13 Our special schools have a special impact, 00:23:57.17\00:23:59.97 and the reality is that 00:24:00.00\00:24:01.40 many people
