Children are our future. 00:00:13.11\00:00:15.98 They are full of dreams and desires. 00:00:16.01\00:00:18.78 But in a world of unspeakable despair, 00:00:18.81\00:00:20.98 these ignited minds live in poverty and privation, 00:00:21.02\00:00:24.02 helpless and hopeless. 00:00:24.05\00:00:29.29 Child Impact International is an organization giving hope. 00:00:29.32\00:00:33.09 It is an organization fostering permanent 00:00:33.13\00:00:35.46 positive change in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:35.50\00:00:38.60 and those who are in need, 00:00:38.63\00:00:41.04 serving communities in India, 00:00:41.07\00:00:42.90 Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and beyond. 00:00:42.94\00:00:48.24 For the last 15 years, 00:00:48.28\00:00:50.25 Child Impact has invested in the futures of children 00:00:50.28\00:00:53.31 and their investment has proven infinite returns 00:00:53.35\00:00:56.28 driven by their dedication to helping those 00:00:56.32\00:00:58.75 who have the least. 00:00:58.79\00:01:00.36 Child Impact is an organization 00:01:00.39\00:01:02.16 focused on the welfare of children 00:01:02.19\00:01:04.69 implementing diverse development projects, 00:01:04.73\00:01:07.23 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:01:07.26\00:01:10.37 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:01:10.40\00:01:13.30 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:01:13.34\00:01:16.20 and the blind children. 00:01:16.24\00:01:18.27 Giving them a sense of place, a home 00:01:18.31\00:01:21.78 but above all Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:21.81\00:01:25.98 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:26.01\00:01:30.45 giving hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:01:30.49\00:01:33.89 This is Hope In Motion. 00:01:38.26\00:01:41.00 Hi, my name is Jim Rennie 00:01:52.94\00:01:54.88 and I am the CEO of Child Impact International 00:01:54.91\00:01:58.71 and as many of you know, 00:01:58.75\00:02:00.85 Operation Child Rescue is one of our key projects. 00:02:00.88\00:02:05.39 It encompasses the rescue of trafficked children, 00:02:05.42\00:02:09.09 babies and orphans 00:02:09.12\00:02:11.96 and Operation Child Rescue also sponsor a rescue home 00:02:11.99\00:02:16.56 and rescue projects in India. 00:02:16.60\00:02:19.07 I'm very excited today that I've got Anita Kanaiya with us 00:02:19.10\00:02:23.30 who is the director of the Freedom Project 00:02:23.34\00:02:26.07 and the Freedom Project is our key partner 00:02:26.11\00:02:28.81 in India for trafficking and rescuing. 00:02:28.84\00:02:31.75 Anita, it's great to have you here today, 00:02:31.78\00:02:34.15 welcome. 00:02:34.18\00:02:35.52 Can you just tell us about the size 00:02:35.55\00:02:37.75 of the trafficking problem in India? 00:02:37.79\00:02:40.52 I guess it's hard for us to comprehend. 00:02:40.56\00:02:44.06 Well, I think global estimates put the figures 00:02:44.09\00:02:46.59 at 40 million across the globe 00:02:46.63\00:02:49.30 and about half that number in India. 00:02:49.33\00:02:51.73 So we are really talking about 00:02:51.77\00:02:53.50 huge numbers of women and children 00:02:53.54\00:02:55.34 who are trafficked every day within India itself. 00:02:55.37\00:02:59.71 Over the last five, six years, 250,000 women and children 00:02:59.74\00:03:05.08 have been missing and still untraced. 00:03:05.11\00:03:08.38 Over 60% of those trafficked 00:03:08.42\00:03:11.05 are found in child labor in India, 00:03:11.09\00:03:13.76 and over 70% of those trafficked across India 00:03:13.79\00:03:17.66 are women and children. 00:03:17.69\00:03:19.03 So we are talking, Jim, 00:03:19.06\00:03:20.40 about huge numbers of women and children 00:03:20.43\00:03:22.46 who go missing, who are trafficked, 00:03:22.50\00:03:24.80 and still hidden. 00:03:24.83\00:03:27.30 It's just beyond comprehension really. 00:03:27.34\00:03:30.47 Now you are based in the city of Bangalore, 00:03:30.51\00:03:33.51 just tell us about that city 00:03:33.54\00:03:35.84 and what you do in the city itself? 00:03:35.88\00:03:40.25 Well, Bangalore is one of the metro cities in India, 00:03:40.28\00:03:44.62 population of about 13 million. 00:03:44.65\00:03:47.49 It's also known as the IT capital 00:03:47.52\00:03:49.56 or the IT hub of India 00:03:49.59\00:03:51.26 because we've got a lot of information technology parks 00:03:51.29\00:03:54.36 and most of the multinationals have offices there. 00:03:54.40\00:03:57.63 And all of these has happened, Jim, 00:03:57.67\00:03:59.50 over the last, perhaps about 15 years, 00:03:59.53\00:04:03.00 and this has opened Bangalore up 00:04:03.04\00:04:05.54 to sizeable population of migrants 00:04:05.57\00:04:08.74 and people looking for jobs, 00:04:08.78\00:04:10.45 which has then created 00:04:10.48\00:04:11.81 this whole issue of women and children being trafficked 00:04:11.85\00:04:15.82 because there is a market in Bangalore for them, 00:04:15.85\00:04:19.65 the demand is big. 00:04:19.69\00:04:21.66 Bangalore is also a cosmopolitan city 00:04:21.69\00:04:24.49 and has a lot of foreign tourism, 00:04:24.53\00:04:27.33 people who come on work as well as tourists. 00:04:27.36\00:04:30.10 And we have seen that even though 00:04:30.13\00:04:32.43 Bangalore does not have a red light area like Delhi, 00:04:32.47\00:04:35.97 or Bombay, or Calcutta, 00:04:36.00\00:04:38.61 the problem of human trafficking is huge 00:04:38.64\00:04:41.84 because it's so hidden. 00:04:41.88\00:04:44.11 Right, and just give us an idea 00:04:44.15\00:04:46.51 of what you are actually doing a rescue? 00:04:46.55\00:04:49.02 Give us an example? 00:04:49.05\00:04:51.39 Like I said, we don't have a red light area in Bangalore, 00:04:51.42\00:04:55.96 and because the problem is so hidden, 00:04:55.99\00:04:57.96 we really have to flush out the information, 00:04:57.99\00:05:01.00 where are these women and children 00:05:01.03\00:05:02.73 being held against their will, what are these places. 00:05:02.76\00:05:08.64 Many times when we've done rescues, 00:05:08.67\00:05:10.77 even I have been surprised at where these places are located. 00:05:10.81\00:05:14.54 It could be in a residential neighborhood. 00:05:14.58\00:05:17.98 We've done a rescue on a farmhouse 00:05:18.01\00:05:20.08 on the outskirts of Bangalore, 00:05:20.12\00:05:22.08 we've done a rescue in a commercial building 00:05:22.12\00:05:26.09 which was a factory 00:05:26.12\00:05:27.79 which was manufacturing school bags 00:05:27.82\00:05:29.79 and we rescued 18 children, 00:05:29.82\00:05:32.49 some of whom were as young as 8 years old 00:05:32.53\00:05:35.73 from the north of India, 00:05:35.76\00:05:37.43 they had been brought down, worked for 14 hours a day 00:05:37.47\00:05:41.04 and not even paid a salary, 00:05:41.07\00:05:43.74 in hideous conditions of squalor, and dirt and filth, 00:05:43.77\00:05:48.78 really unhealthy conditions. 00:05:48.81\00:05:51.18 But there are other times 00:05:51.21\00:05:52.55 where we have done brothel rescues, 00:05:52.58\00:05:54.78 and we have gone in there 00:05:54.82\00:05:56.42 and had to really search for the girls 00:05:56.45\00:05:58.05 because there was no one there, 00:05:58.09\00:05:59.72 and yet we knew that the girls were there, 00:05:59.75\00:06:02.66 and we have had to break places open, 00:06:02.69\00:06:06.16 look for false ceilings, walls, floors, yeah. 00:06:06.19\00:06:12.80 And so just tell us a story of a girl or a child 00:06:12.83\00:06:18.37 that you've rescued. 00:06:18.41\00:06:19.74 What's one of the amazing stories 00:06:19.77\00:06:22.24 of when you've gone and you found someone, 00:06:22.28\00:06:26.68 what's the story? 00:06:26.72\00:06:29.38 Well, I think every one of those stories are amazing, 00:06:29.42\00:06:32.22 not so much because we go in and rescue, 00:06:32.25\00:06:35.52 but because of the courage of those 00:06:35.56\00:06:40.00 who have been held 00:06:40.03\00:06:41.36 in these terrible situations of abuse, 00:06:41.40\00:06:44.53 and have been able to still, 00:06:44.57\00:06:47.47 you know, wait for that day when we do that rescue, so. 00:06:47.50\00:06:50.57 One that really stands out in my mind 00:06:50.61\00:06:52.64 is when we did one on a farmhouse 00:06:52.67\00:06:56.75 between Bangalore and Mysore, 00:06:56.78\00:06:59.78 about three hours out of Bangalore. 00:06:59.81\00:07:02.75 So we had gone there, we knew that there were girls there. 00:07:02.78\00:07:05.95 But like I said earlier, 00:07:05.99\00:07:07.96 we went in there with the police 00:07:07.99\00:07:09.46 and there was no one there. 00:07:09.49\00:07:11.16 And they had two huge dogs tied outside, very ferocious, 00:07:11.19\00:07:15.23 so wouldn't allow us to search the building. 00:07:15.26\00:07:18.70 There were paddy fields all around 00:07:18.73\00:07:20.14 so the girls couldn't have disappeared. 00:07:20.17\00:07:22.07 I mean, we had eyes on that building. 00:07:22.10\00:07:25.14 We searched everywhere for them and we didn't find them. 00:07:25.17\00:07:28.88 And finally, like I said, 00:07:28.91\00:07:30.25 we looked for hollow sounds or spaces 00:07:30.28\00:07:32.68 to see if there is a purpose-built place 00:07:32.71\00:07:34.95 but who would have thought that along, 00:07:34.98\00:07:37.99 you know, a highway somebody would build a place like that. 00:07:38.02\00:07:42.36 But yet, we found the place, and we broke it open, 00:07:42.39\00:07:45.63 and sure enough the girls were hidden in this space, Jim, 00:07:45.66\00:07:49.36 which was like a 10x10 with absolutely no ventilation, 00:07:49.40\00:07:54.20 and there were 12 girls inside there. 00:07:54.24\00:07:56.30 Some of them even, 00:07:56.34\00:07:57.91 you know, were thrown in there without clothes. 00:07:57.94\00:08:00.18 So I had to crawl in, 00:08:00.21\00:08:02.04 head-first into that place to actually, 00:08:02.08\00:08:04.75 you know, bring the girls out. 00:08:04.78\00:08:06.11 So that one really stands out in my mind 00:08:06.15\00:08:09.25 to what levels people will go to actually abuse 00:08:09.28\00:08:13.05 not just the girls but even the system. 00:08:13.09\00:08:15.99 Right, wow. Well, that's amazing. 00:08:16.02\00:08:19.39 So Child Impact, and in fact partnering 00:08:19.43\00:08:23.13 with Voice of Prophecy have been 00:08:23.16\00:08:25.93 able to sponsor the Azadi Rescue home. 00:08:25.97\00:08:30.17 Let's just talk about that for a moment. 00:08:30.21\00:08:32.94 Why was there a need for you to have a rescue home? 00:08:32.97\00:08:37.38 Well, every time we did a rescue, 00:08:37.41\00:08:40.28 we had to take the girls across to an institution 00:08:40.32\00:08:44.22 which wasn't the best place. 00:08:44.25\00:08:45.85 I mean, we didn't have access to the girls 00:08:45.89\00:08:48.72 when they went to the institution, 00:08:48.76\00:08:50.66 they were kind of languishing there, 00:08:50.69\00:08:52.93 there wasn't a program, there was no counseling 00:08:52.96\00:08:56.30 and, you know, really the girls 00:08:56.33\00:08:58.20 were almost always trying to escape from that place. 00:08:58.23\00:09:02.14 So we realized that if we had to rescue them 00:09:02.17\00:09:05.37 and prevent them from being re-trafficked, 00:09:05.41\00:09:07.91 we really needed a home 00:09:07.94\00:09:09.78 where we could provide them with the counseling, 00:09:09.81\00:09:12.91 the trauma counseling, I mean, it's traumatic 00:09:12.95\00:09:16.12 for what they go through in those brothels 00:09:16.15\00:09:18.12 but even more traumatic are the rescues themselves 00:09:18.15\00:09:21.06 when they, you know, have to sit in the police station 00:09:21.09\00:09:23.12 and then, you know, are questioned 00:09:23.16\00:09:24.76 like they are perpetrators instead of victims. 00:09:24.79\00:09:28.26 So we wanted a home 00:09:28.30\00:09:30.40 that would be a place of healing, 00:09:30.43\00:09:32.67 of restoration, of future and a hope, 00:09:32.70\00:09:36.40 and that's how Azadi was born. 00:09:36.44\00:09:38.14 It means freedom 00:09:38.17\00:09:39.74 and we wanted them to be able to experience freedom 00:09:39.77\00:09:43.14 in every sense of the word. 00:09:43.18\00:09:45.21 Now we saw some pictures of our home, 00:09:45.25\00:09:47.15 but just tell us about the building 00:09:47.18\00:09:49.88 and tell us about what's inside? 00:09:49.92\00:09:52.65 Well, when we envisioned a home 00:09:52.69\00:09:54.76 for these survivals of trafficking, 00:09:54.79\00:09:57.39 we thought of a place that would have, 00:09:57.43\00:10:00.00 you know, an outdoor space for them to sit, 00:10:00.03\00:10:02.53 some greenery, a garden, just a nice place, Jim, 00:10:02.56\00:10:07.70 for them to relax. 00:10:07.74\00:10:09.30 A place that they would never think of running away from, 00:10:09.34\00:10:13.17 a home and that's how we set Azadi up. 00:10:13.21\00:10:15.88 We have a little garden space, the girls love to plant. 00:10:15.91\00:10:19.91 They've just planted watermelon in the garden. 00:10:19.95\00:10:23.65 They have roses 00:10:23.69\00:10:25.02 and it's just a place of healing for them, 00:10:25.05\00:10:27.59 and inside, we've put in really nice furniture. 00:10:27.62\00:10:31.56 I know that sometimes 00:10:31.59\00:10:32.93 when we've had government officials 00:10:32.96\00:10:34.30 visit the home, they always ask us, 00:10:34.33\00:10:36.53 "Wow, so who has done this home up? 00:10:36.56\00:10:40.07 I mean, how come you've got such a nice place?" 00:10:40.10\00:10:42.67 Because most people expect us to put in secondhand furniture, 00:10:42.70\00:10:45.84 and kind of, you know, leave it drabbed 00:10:45.87\00:10:48.34 but we wanted the girls to know 00:10:48.38\00:10:50.45 that this is a place of healing and of hope. 00:10:50.48\00:10:53.68 And I think that's the message 00:10:53.72\00:10:55.08 right across from our decor 00:10:55.12\00:10:56.62 to the way the house is arranged. 00:10:56.65\00:10:58.55 We have bunk beds, each girl has a bed to herself. 00:10:58.59\00:11:02.36 We have children even now, for babies. 00:11:02.39\00:11:05.09 So we have kind of had to make it child-friendly, 00:11:05.13\00:11:07.86 the home. 00:11:07.90\00:11:09.23 They have a beautiful kitchen space 00:11:09.26\00:11:11.00 where they can cook and, you know, 00:11:11.03\00:11:13.13 a dining space as well 00:11:13.17\00:11:14.57 and we've put in a lot of safety features also. 00:11:14.60\00:11:17.87 Yes, I remember when we... 00:11:17.91\00:11:20.04 When I visited India on one of my last trips, 00:11:20.08\00:11:22.94 well, in fact, it was... 00:11:22.98\00:11:24.61 No, it's longer than that, 00:11:24.65\00:11:25.98 I think it's about three years ago 00:11:26.01\00:11:27.42 you found the home. 00:11:27.45\00:11:29.02 I wondered 00:11:29.05\00:11:30.59 how the girls would settle into a building like that. 00:11:30.62\00:11:34.56 But with the lovely yard 00:11:34.59\00:11:35.92 and the fact that you have made it comfortable, 00:11:35.96\00:11:38.76 they are given hope, they feel comfortable, 00:11:38.79\00:11:40.96 they don't want to run away. 00:11:41.00\00:11:43.70 Just tell us a story about one of the girls, 00:11:43.73\00:11:46.67 there must be a story that really reflects the hope 00:11:46.70\00:11:51.71 that's given and the change that is made. 00:11:51.74\00:11:54.74 What's a great story you'd like to share with us? 00:11:54.78\00:11:58.81 Well, I think every one of those stories are great. 00:11:58.85\00:12:02.12 There are stories of hope, 00:12:02.15\00:12:03.59 there are stories of restoration, 00:12:03.62\00:12:05.55 of fighting back. 00:12:05.59\00:12:08.66 I think, and when I share one story, 00:12:08.69\00:12:11.13 it's really elements of all their stories. 00:12:11.16\00:12:13.19 Yes. 00:12:13.23\00:12:14.56 Because every one of those girls 00:12:14.60\00:12:16.53 somehow was cheated because they believed someone, 00:12:16.56\00:12:21.27 they trusted someone, 00:12:21.30\00:12:22.87 and a lot of them trusted someone for a job. 00:12:22.90\00:12:27.28 They come from very poor situations. 00:12:27.31\00:12:29.98 We have a girl who crossed mountains 00:12:30.01\00:12:33.48 to get to a place which promised a job. 00:12:33.52\00:12:37.69 It was a job which was going to pay her some money 00:12:37.72\00:12:40.86 and when she landed there, 00:12:40.89\00:12:42.22 she realized that she has been sold to a brothel, 00:12:42.26\00:12:45.63 and she just had to service customers. 00:12:45.66\00:12:48.16 I mean, when we go through trauma counseling with them, 00:12:48.20\00:12:51.17 they will tell us about the hideous times 00:12:51.20\00:12:53.94 that they have had with customers with clout, 00:12:53.97\00:12:58.64 with customers who have paid a lot of money, 00:12:58.67\00:13:00.91 and where they've had no choice. 00:13:00.94\00:13:02.84 And they tell us of times where they've had to, 00:13:02.88\00:13:05.41 you know, be at it the whole day, 00:13:05.45\00:13:08.65 some of them have children. 00:13:08.68\00:13:11.12 But just to share 00:13:11.15\00:13:13.49 not the details of what happened there, 00:13:13.52\00:13:16.59 but why it happened. 00:13:16.62\00:13:18.86 A lot of times, 00:13:18.89\00:13:20.70 their stories are stories of vulnerability 00:13:20.73\00:13:23.57 where they are single parent or where their families... 00:13:23.60\00:13:27.44 They come from broken families. 00:13:27.47\00:13:28.97 So they're really looking for a way out of that situation 00:13:29.00\00:13:32.57 and traffickers know this, they prey on vulnerabilities. 00:13:32.61\00:13:37.01 And this particular girl was brought by her own friend 00:13:37.05\00:13:40.45 and her husband, and they came to sight-seeing, 00:13:40.48\00:13:45.35 you know, to get a job. 00:13:45.39\00:13:46.96 But when she woke up, she was in a brothel 00:13:46.99\00:13:50.03 and it took a rescue operation, Jim, 00:13:50.06\00:13:52.59 to get her out of that place. 00:13:52.63\00:13:54.53 I mean, there was a sense of hopelessness. 00:13:54.56\00:13:56.67 You know, we always ask, 00:13:56.70\00:13:58.13 you know, can you not use up customer's mobile phones 00:13:58.17\00:14:01.20 and they tell us no, 00:14:01.24\00:14:02.57 they are not allowed their mobiles inside. 00:14:02.60\00:14:04.47 And even if they are, on that very rare occasion, 00:14:04.51\00:14:08.24 whenever they call and ask for help, 00:14:08.28\00:14:11.08 most often, 00:14:11.11\00:14:13.18 if they try and escape they are brought back. 00:14:13.21\00:14:15.38 Yes. 00:14:15.42\00:14:16.75 Because it's a very linked, very organized crime. 00:14:16.79\00:14:20.76 And is there a spiritual element 00:14:20.79\00:14:23.32 of what you do? 00:14:23.36\00:14:25.16 Yes, I would love to say 00:14:25.19\00:14:27.10 that I think the only restoration 00:14:27.13\00:14:29.90 and hope possible 00:14:29.93\00:14:32.03 that brings long time transformation 00:14:32.07\00:14:34.77 in their lives is Jesus. 00:14:34.80\00:14:36.14 Yes. 00:14:36.17\00:14:37.51 And we give them that hope, we pray with them, we counsel, 00:14:37.54\00:14:41.88 we tell them that no matter what, 00:14:41.91\00:14:44.51 they are made in the image of God, 00:14:44.55\00:14:46.61 and that image however marred 00:14:46.65\00:14:48.95 it may look to them is God's image. 00:14:48.98\00:14:51.39 It's how He created them 00:14:51.42\00:14:52.75 and that God will restore that image, 00:14:52.79\00:14:55.09 that's what our home is about. 00:14:55.12\00:14:57.43 And our girls are very open to experiencing God's love 00:14:57.46\00:15:02.96 because they have been so cheated, 00:15:03.00\00:15:05.63 so duped of the real love 00:15:05.67\00:15:08.04 that when they come in here to our Azadi home, 00:15:08.07\00:15:10.84 they just say, this God who has loved me 00:15:10.87\00:15:16.08 even when I was in a terrible situation, 00:15:16.11\00:15:19.18 is the one who has given me hope. 00:15:19.21\00:15:20.78 So a lot of our girls, 00:15:20.82\00:15:23.12 you know, are just so amazed 00:15:23.15\00:15:25.99 that there is a God who loves them. 00:15:26.02\00:15:27.46 That message is a message of real hope for them 00:15:27.49\00:15:30.99 because nobody ever told them that before 00:15:31.03\00:15:33.36 and they have come to experience God 00:15:33.40\00:15:35.26 and love Jesus at our home. 00:15:35.30\00:15:38.93 Well, Anita, we just admire the work you do 00:15:38.97\00:15:43.00 to be physically involved in rescues, 00:15:43.04\00:15:46.91 to have to coordinate the rehabilitation, 00:15:46.94\00:15:50.88 but then taking the lead with a spiritual role. 00:15:50.91\00:15:54.78 We are very proud of our association. 00:15:54.82\00:15:57.85 And Child Impact is just so excited 00:15:57.89\00:16:01.12 that through Operation Child Rescue, 00:16:01.16\00:16:03.76 we can give some hope to these girls 00:16:03.79\00:16:06.46 in just some small way. 00:16:06.49\00:16:08.30 And I want to thank the donors and the supporters 00:16:08.33\00:16:11.20 and encourage you 00:16:11.23\00:16:12.60 to consider Operation Child Rescue 00:16:12.63\00:16:15.70 as a project that you can support 00:16:15.74\00:16:18.61 to make a real difference in the lives of the girls 00:16:18.64\00:16:22.74 that you've heard about today. 00:16:22.78\00:16:24.71 A couple of years ago, my daughters and I 00:16:34.72\00:16:36.73 had a wonderful opportunity to travel to India. 00:16:36.76\00:16:40.16 And while we were there, 00:16:40.20\00:16:41.53 we met yet another part of our family, 00:16:41.56\00:16:43.63 and that's our sponsored daughter Sheila. 00:16:43.67\00:16:46.20 We've had the privilege of sponsoring Sheila 00:16:46.23\00:16:48.67 through Child Impact International 00:16:48.70\00:16:51.11 for more than three years now. 00:16:51.14\00:16:53.34 And, you know, while we were there, 00:16:53.38\00:16:55.24 she shared with us 00:16:55.28\00:16:56.61 that her dream was to become a nurse. 00:16:56.64\00:16:59.65 Now, what a wonderful privilege it is for us 00:16:59.68\00:17:02.48 now as a family to know 00:17:02.52\00:17:04.82 that she is fulfilling that dream. 00:17:04.85\00:17:07.66 Sheila is now studying to be a nurse. 00:17:07.69\00:17:10.26 She's in college 00:17:10.29\00:17:11.63 and we cannot be happier for her. 00:17:11.66\00:17:14.00 It's been wonderful to be part of that journey with her. 00:17:14.03\00:17:17.40 And, you know, sponsoring a child through Child Impact, 00:17:17.43\00:17:20.70 it's made an incredible difference for our family. 00:17:20.74\00:17:23.94 And I know that for you, 00:17:23.97\00:17:25.31 sponsoring a child can make a difference for you too. 00:17:25.34\00:17:28.08 And most importantly, 00:17:28.11\00:17:29.51 it can make the difference 00:17:29.54\00:17:30.88 in the life of a child every day. 00:17:30.91\00:17:33.21 Child Impact International is all about children, 00:18:01.14\00:18:04.38 impacting children in a positive 00:18:04.41\00:18:06.28 and long-lasting way through education and sponsorship. 00:18:06.31\00:18:10.55 Over the last couple of years, 00:18:10.59\00:18:12.49 Child Impact has focused its work in Bangladesh 00:18:12.52\00:18:15.12 by helping the school system achieve its potential. 00:18:15.16\00:18:18.16 Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries 00:18:18.19\00:18:20.13 in the world 00:18:20.16\00:18:21.50 and a majority of students who attend our schools 00:18:21.53\00:18:23.67 come from poor backgrounds and depend on sponsorship. 00:18:23.70\00:18:27.27 The Seventh-day Adventist school system in Bangladesh 00:18:44.39\00:18:47.32 has over 10,000 students 00:18:47.36\00:18:49.26 and only 20% of them are paying students. 00:18:49.29\00:18:52.26 The rest are sponsored 00:18:52.29\00:18:53.63 or seeking some kind of sponsorship 00:18:53.66\00:18:55.36 to continue their education. 00:18:55.40\00:18:57.40 This situation puts the schools 00:18:57.43\00:18:59.07 in financial distress and can have direct impact 00:18:59.10\00:19:01.84 on the student's well being 00:19:01.87\00:19:03.34 as well as the quality of education. 00:19:03.37\00:19:05.54 This is where an organization 00:19:05.57\00:19:06.98 like Child Impact has a great impact. 00:19:07.01\00:19:11.55 Well, sponsorship, to be honest, 00:19:11.58\00:19:13.31 is one of the most direct ways 00:19:13.35\00:19:15.22 that the donor can get involved in the mission field. 00:19:15.25\00:19:19.05 And in a country like Bangladesh, 00:19:19.09\00:19:21.22 it has a massive impact. 00:19:21.26\00:19:23.22 And we are really grateful to our sponsors and donors 00:19:23.26\00:19:26.93 for the support that they give Child Impact. 00:19:26.96\00:19:30.33 But it's actually not about Child Impact, 00:19:30.37\00:19:32.67 it's actually about the children 00:19:32.70\00:19:34.84 who that they support every month 00:19:34.87\00:19:37.51 and make a real difference. 00:19:37.54\00:19:40.01 Sponsoring children 00:19:40.04\00:19:42.11 in activities like these mission schools 00:19:42.14\00:19:46.21 and opportunities is a tremendous way 00:19:46.25\00:19:49.72 to help form the character of young people 00:19:49.75\00:19:53.62 as they look to the future. 00:19:53.66\00:19:55.12 They will never forget 00:19:55.16\00:19:57.03 their association in a Christian environment. 00:19:57.06\00:20:00.40 It is absolutely a powerful witness to sponsor a child 00:20:00.43\00:20:05.97 in Child Impact and so many other organizations 00:20:06.00\00:20:10.31 that help young people to find Jesus. 00:20:10.34\00:20:14.28 Child Impact is a unique organization. 00:20:19.21\00:20:21.82 It is not just a sponsorship agency 00:20:21.85\00:20:24.32 but as Jim said, it gives sponsors a unique opportunity 00:20:24.35\00:20:27.86 to be involved in the mission field every day. 00:20:27.89\00:20:30.83 In mission fields like Bangladesh, 00:20:30.86\00:20:32.56 the child depends on the sponsor, 00:20:32.59\00:20:34.46 and so the sponsor is not only impacting the life of a child 00:20:34.50\00:20:37.73 but making a significant difference 00:20:37.77\00:20:39.30 in the mission schools, big and small. 00:20:39.33\00:20:42.70 Just walking in to a small rural mission school 00:20:42.74\00:20:46.07 here in Bangladesh, 00:20:46.11\00:20:47.98 really allows you to see the difference 00:20:48.01\00:20:50.81 that sponsorship in education makes. 00:20:50.85\00:20:53.92 Because these children come from rural farming communities 00:20:53.95\00:20:58.19 where to be honest, 00:20:58.22\00:20:59.55 there is a severe shortage of funds 00:20:59.59\00:21:02.36 and food sometimes. 00:21:02.39\00:21:04.26 And so these children are being given hope 00:21:04.29\00:21:06.76 and these children are being given an education 00:21:06.80\00:21:09.76 and here we see the difference that sponsorship is making. 00:21:09.80\00:21:16.07 The Bangladesh Union Mission 00:21:16.10\00:21:17.51 runs many such village schools in the community. 00:21:17.54\00:21:20.31 These village schools also act as feeder schools 00:21:20.34\00:21:22.81 for bigger institutions like Monosapara Adventist Seminary. 00:21:22.84\00:21:26.51 Borsha Mankin came to Monosapara in 2014 00:21:45.77\00:21:49.20 and is a seventh grade student. 00:21:49.24\00:21:51.21 Borsha is recipient of Child Impact sponsorship 00:21:51.24\00:21:54.08 that she has been receiving 00:21:54.11\00:21:55.44 from a primary level at her village. 00:21:55.48\00:21:57.85 Borsha comes from Shibananda Khila, 00:22:14.46\00:22:16.83 a small village about one hour drive from Monosapara. 00:22:16.87\00:22:20.74 Visiting her village and meeting her grandparents, 00:22:20.77\00:22:23.04 it was evident they were facing hardship 00:22:23.07\00:22:25.31 and it emphasized the need for sponsorship 00:22:25.34\00:22:27.51 for children like Borsha. 00:22:27.54\00:22:29.44 Borsha's parents are day laborers 00:22:52.80\00:22:54.67 who worked in the paddy fields owned by landlords. 00:22:54.70\00:22:57.47 But a severe drought last year made jobs unavailable 00:22:57.51\00:23:00.24 for them in the village. 00:23:00.28\00:23:01.61 With no daily wages, 00:23:01.64\00:23:03.11 they struggled to feed the family 00:23:03.14\00:23:04.91 and were forced to borrow money. 00:23:04.95\00:23:06.65 Unable to settle their debt, they decided to move to Dhaka, 00:23:06.68\00:23:09.58 the capital city, to earn some money 00:23:09.62\00:23:11.62 and pay back their debt. 00:23:11.65\00:23:13.76 Families facing such financial hardship 00:23:13.79\00:23:16.29 have only one thing on their mind, 00:23:16.32\00:23:18.33 feeding their family. 00:23:18.36\00:23:20.06 In such circumstances, 00:23:20.10\00:23:21.43 the thought of educating their children 00:23:21.46\00:23:23.26 takes the back seat. 00:23:23.30\00:23:24.70 It's not hard to imagine 00:23:24.73\00:23:26.57 what would have happened to Borsha 00:23:26.60\00:23:28.24 if she didn't go to school. 00:23:28.27\00:23:30.14 If they wouldn't have the sponsorship 00:23:30.17\00:23:32.34 and continue their education, 00:23:32.37\00:23:34.98 they would remain the same as their parents 00:23:35.01\00:23:39.45 and they would be the day laborers 00:23:39.48\00:23:42.02 and especially for girls, 00:23:42.05\00:23:43.82 they would have early marriage 00:23:43.85\00:23:45.85 and they will be just a day laborer 00:23:45.89\00:23:48.32 and without hope in this world. 00:23:48.36\00:23:51.73 Today, thanks to Borsha's sponsors, 00:24:19.32\00:24:21.76 she can leave behind the hardship of her parents, 00:24:21.79\00:24:24.33 break away from the cycle of poverty 00:24:24.36\00:24:26.29 and focus on her studies at Monosapara. 00:24:26.33\00:24:28.83 She wants to become a nurse 00:24:28.86\00:24:30.60 and at Monosapara, she has the opportunity 00:24:30.63\00:24:33.67 to realize her dreams. 00:24:33.70\00:24:36.97 As the in-charge of sponsorship program 00:24:37.01\00:24:39.24 here in Bangladesh, 00:24:39.27\00:24:41.88 I see the great impact 00:24:41.91\00:24:45.28 on children and their education, 00:24:45.31\00:24:48.65 and if we have more sponsors coming forward 00:24:48.68\00:24:53.62 to help these kids to give hope in their life, 00:24:53.66\00:24:58.79 and the impact in their life would be greater. 00:24:58.83\00:25:04.07 Well, after today, riding by motorbike 00:25:04.10\00:25:07.30 and coming to the villages, 00:25:07.34\00:25:09.44 coming to where these children live, 00:25:09.47\00:25:12.04 it's really strengthened my belief on what we do. 00:25:12.07\00:25:15.61 I've actually seen the homes these children come from, 00:25:15.64\00:25:19.58 and then I see the difference that's being made 00:25:19.61\00:25:22.38 at the schools where they go. 00:25:22.42\00:25:25.52 And you really have to come and see where they come from. 00:25:25.55\00:25:30.13 You have to come and see 00:25:30.16\00:25:31.49 the challenges they are facing in their homes 00:25:31.53\00:25:34.86 and their communities with poverty, 00:25:34.90\00:25:38.37 with getting work. 00:25:38.40\00:25:40.20 It just shows me that by having an education, 00:25:40.24\00:25:43.54 they've got hope, they've got a little edge 00:25:43.57\00:25:45.71 to do something better. 00:25:45.74\00:25:47.64 Some of them have got brothers and sisters 00:25:47.68\00:25:49.91 who have gone to the big cities to work. 00:25:49.94\00:25:52.18 And to be honest, 00:25:52.21\00:25:53.55 all is they are working is on construction sites 00:25:53.58\00:25:56.75 or low paid jobs. 00:25:56.79\00:25:59.25 But these children when they have got an education 00:25:59.29\00:26:02.22 and to have to walk through the fields, 00:26:02.26\00:26:05.23 to have to see the houses they are living in, 00:26:05.26\00:26:07.96 it's pretty touching, 00:26:08.00\00:26:09.83 and today, I'm strengthened 00:26:09.86\00:26:13.13 that I know that what we are doing is great. 00:26:13.17\00:26:15.90
