In this episode of Hope In Motion, 00:00:17.11\00:00:19.01 we look at how Child Impact's work in Bangladesh 00:00:19.05\00:00:21.68 is bringing a positive change 00:00:21.72\00:00:23.32 in the lives of underprivileged children 00:00:23.35\00:00:25.32 and their communities. 00:00:25.35\00:00:26.69 We look at how your sponsorship 00:00:26.72\00:00:28.32 is helping the mission field in Bangladesh 00:00:28.36\00:00:30.46 and its educational institutions. 00:00:30.49\00:00:33.06 Our sponsorship, to be honest, is one of the most direct ways 00:00:33.09\00:00:36.63 that the donor can get involved in the mission field. 00:00:36.67\00:00:40.44 And in a country like Bangladesh, 00:00:40.47\00:00:42.60 it has a massive impact. 00:00:42.64\00:00:44.74 We meet 13-year old Borsha 00:00:44.77\00:00:46.78 at the Monosapara Adventist Seminary 00:00:46.81\00:00:49.24 who is looking forward to a better future 00:00:49.28\00:00:51.25 because of Child Impact's sponsorship program, 00:00:51.28\00:00:54.08 and travel with Jim Rennie to remote villages 00:00:54.12\00:00:56.85 where we meet with Durjoy and Jhorna's family 00:00:56.89\00:00:59.35 who are grateful that someone came forward 00:00:59.39\00:01:01.52 to give their children a helping hand. 00:01:01.56\00:01:03.89 Children are our future. 00:01:16.64\00:01:19.47 They are full of dreams and desires. 00:01:19.51\00:01:22.31 But in a world of unspeakable despair, 00:01:22.34\00:01:24.58 these ignited minds live in poverty and probation, 00:01:24.61\00:01:27.62 helpless and hopeless. 00:01:27.65\00:01:29.28 Child Impact International is an organization giving hope. 00:01:32.85\00:01:36.73 It is an organization fostering permanent positive change 00:01:36.76\00:01:40.03 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:01:40.06\00:01:42.06 and those who are in need, 00:01:42.10\00:01:44.50 serving communities in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, 00:01:44.53\00:01:49.20 Myanmar, and beyond. 00:01:49.24\00:01:51.71 For the last 15 years, 00:01:51.74\00:01:53.68 Child Impact has invested in the futures of children, 00:01:53.71\00:01:56.75 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:01:56.78\00:01:59.81 Driven by their dedication 00:01:59.85\00:02:01.38 to helping those who have the least, 00:02:01.42\00:02:03.89 Child Impact is an organization 00:02:03.92\00:02:05.82 focused on the welfare of children, 00:02:05.85\00:02:08.32 implementing diverse development projects, 00:02:08.36\00:02:10.66 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:02:10.69\00:02:13.83 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:02:13.86\00:02:16.87 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:02:16.90\00:02:19.60 and the blind children. 00:02:19.63\00:02:21.67 Giving them a sense of place, a home, 00:02:21.70\00:02:25.37 but above all Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:02:25.41\00:02:29.44 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:02:29.48\00:02:34.02 giving hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:02:34.05\00:02:36.89 This is Hope In Motion. 00:02:41.72\00:02:44.13 Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries 00:03:12.49\00:03:14.59 in the world, 00:03:14.62\00:03:15.96 and it's one of the most densely populated countries 00:03:15.99\00:03:18.09 with nearly 150 million people. 00:03:18.13\00:03:21.23 One-third of the people live below the poverty line 00:03:21.26\00:03:24.17 earning less than $2 a day. 00:03:24.20\00:03:29.14 Although major efforts are being made 00:03:29.17\00:03:31.04 to alleviate poverty, 00:03:31.07\00:03:32.47 in rural villages, life is a struggle. 00:03:32.51\00:03:35.44 In an agrarian society, natural calamities 00:03:35.48\00:03:38.15 like droughts and floods 00:03:38.18\00:03:39.65 can have disastrous consequences 00:03:39.68\00:03:41.32 on their daily lives. 00:03:41.35\00:03:42.92 In a world where finding food 00:03:42.95\00:03:44.29 and other basic necessities is a primary objective, 00:03:44.32\00:03:47.29 the need to educate their children 00:03:47.32\00:03:49.16 is almost irrelevant. 00:03:49.19\00:03:51.86 Well, Child Impact wants to expand its work 00:03:51.89\00:03:54.63 in the country of Bangladesh. 00:03:54.66\00:03:56.50 Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries 00:03:56.53\00:03:58.97 in the world. 00:03:59.00\00:04:00.34 The number of people in Bangladesh per square mile 00:04:00.37\00:04:04.67 is one of the most dense in the world, 00:04:04.71\00:04:07.08 the poverty there is huge, 00:04:07.11\00:04:09.64 and so Child Impact is very excited 00:04:09.68\00:04:12.51 that we will be expanding our work 00:04:12.55\00:04:15.18 in the schools in Bangladesh. 00:04:15.22\00:04:19.52 Education plays a vital role 00:04:19.55\00:04:21.46 in bringing children out of poverty. 00:04:21.49\00:04:23.49 But access to good education 00:04:23.53\00:04:25.06 is hard for children and families 00:04:25.09\00:04:26.80 in rural communities in Bangladesh. 00:04:26.83\00:04:29.43 We know that education is important 00:04:29.46\00:04:31.23 throughout the world. 00:04:31.27\00:04:32.70 For people who don't have those opportunities, 00:04:32.73\00:04:35.30 who are disadvantaged, 00:04:35.34\00:04:37.21 someone needs to give them a hand 00:04:37.24\00:04:39.41 because they fall through the cracks 00:04:39.44\00:04:42.08 and we want to plug those holes out. 00:04:42.11\00:04:45.15 So for children here, 00:04:45.18\00:04:47.25 if they don't have access to education, 00:04:47.28\00:04:49.85 then the only prospect for the future 00:04:49.88\00:04:53.36 is to be in employment 00:04:53.39\00:04:57.23 that's not really that rewarding 00:04:57.26\00:04:59.59 and the future doesn't look bright for them. 00:04:59.63\00:05:02.36 Competition for work within education 00:05:02.40\00:05:05.40 is really so strong that without one, 00:05:05.43\00:05:08.64 they can't access the opportunities in life. 00:05:08.67\00:05:10.91 In the Seventh-day Adventist school system in Bangladesh, 00:05:13.91\00:05:16.81 there are nearly 10,000 students 00:05:16.85\00:05:18.71 and only 20% of these children are paying students. 00:05:18.75\00:05:22.02 The remaining majority are either sponsored 00:05:22.05\00:05:24.42 or seeking sponsorship. 00:05:24.45\00:05:26.12 This is where an organization like Child Impact 00:05:26.15\00:05:28.86 has a huge impact in Bangladesh. 00:05:28.89\00:05:31.96 The country of Bangladesh has an enormous population 00:05:31.99\00:05:35.60 squeezed into a very small area and territory. 00:05:35.63\00:05:39.87 And Child Impact is making an impact there 00:05:39.90\00:05:42.94 in helping with schools in Bangladesh. 00:05:42.97\00:05:47.18 I want to encourage everyone to seriously consider 00:05:47.21\00:05:50.85 how you can impact a child's life in Bangladesh. 00:05:50.88\00:05:54.88 Monosapara Adventist Seminary 00:06:02.02\00:06:04.39 is one of the major boarding schools in Bangladesh. 00:06:04.43\00:06:07.83 Established nearly 10 years ago, 00:06:07.86\00:06:09.80 this institution is a blessing for children coming 00:06:09.83\00:06:12.27 from poor communities in the area. 00:06:12.30\00:06:15.07 About 8 to 10 years ago, 00:06:15.10\00:06:16.64 some large donors really invested 00:06:16.67\00:06:19.67 in the church education in Bangladesh. 00:06:19.71\00:06:22.48 They established some very special large 00:06:22.51\00:06:25.91 boarding schools. 00:06:25.95\00:06:27.28 Now they established them in very rural and poor areas, 00:06:27.32\00:06:31.69 and so now there is a huge need 00:06:31.72\00:06:34.26 for these schools to have support 00:06:34.29\00:06:36.66 to sponsor children 00:06:36.69\00:06:38.03 and support them financially so that they continue. 00:06:38.06\00:06:41.56 To be honest, they are under a lot of financial pressure 00:06:41.60\00:06:44.73 because the communities affectively are poorer 00:06:44.77\00:06:48.70 than they were 8 to 10 years ago. 00:06:48.74\00:06:51.07 And so we are very excited 00:06:51.11\00:06:53.17 that we can expand our sponsorship 00:06:53.21\00:06:56.01 in these facilities 00:06:56.04\00:06:57.91 that were built 8 to 10 years ago. 00:06:57.95\00:07:00.32 There's a great foundation for making a difference 00:07:00.35\00:07:03.89 for the church in Bangladesh 00:07:03.92\00:07:06.22 but also in the lives of these children. 00:07:06.25\00:07:10.16 Monosapara Adventist Seminary and school is impacting 00:07:10.19\00:07:14.20 so much for this community 00:07:14.23\00:07:15.56 because this community people are 00:07:15.60\00:07:19.83 seeking good education, 00:07:19.87\00:07:23.20 and this school is really providing 00:07:23.24\00:07:26.24 this education for them 00:07:26.27\00:07:28.41 and specially they are dependent, 00:07:28.44\00:07:32.98 and these people going to the cities 00:07:33.01\00:07:39.15 for their job and in the city 00:07:39.19\00:07:42.72 who will take care of their children. 00:07:42.76\00:07:45.86 So it's a very secure place here 00:07:45.89\00:07:48.66 in Monosapara School to continue their education. 00:07:48.70\00:07:53.00 Jhorna Chiran is a sixth grade student 00:08:14.66\00:08:17.13 and came to Monosapara last year. 00:08:17.16\00:08:19.16 She has been sponsored by Child Impact 00:08:19.19\00:08:21.36 ever since she started attending primary school 00:08:21.40\00:08:23.63 at her village in Mondatoly Mondartoli. 00:08:23.67\00:08:26.27 Born into a poor Adventist household, 00:08:26.30\00:08:28.40 where access to one proper meal a day 00:08:28.44\00:08:30.24 is a challenge, 00:08:30.27\00:08:31.61 Jhorna's mother had to deal with the extra burden 00:08:31.64\00:08:33.68 of caring for her children all on her own. 00:08:33.71\00:08:36.21 She is telling that one day, 00:08:48.96\00:08:51.29 she went for work and after return back, 00:08:51.33\00:08:55.10 he fell to sickness, 00:08:55.13\00:08:58.63 and she is telling that the fever is like 00:08:58.67\00:09:02.74 jaundice, do you know? 00:09:02.77\00:09:06.71 For this case... 00:09:06.74\00:09:08.08 yeah, because of that. 00:09:08.11\00:09:09.54 Why they couldn't take him to the hospital? 00:09:09.58\00:09:12.01 She is telling that she tried to give... 00:09:18.25\00:09:22.16 show the doctor and give the treatment 00:09:22.19\00:09:24.86 but he couldn't survive. 00:09:24.89\00:09:29.40 Jhorna's father passed away in 2013. 00:09:29.43\00:09:32.43 In a rural community, such as, Mondartoli 00:09:32.47\00:09:34.84 when a woman loses her husband, 00:09:34.87\00:09:36.24 she not only has to deal with the loss of her husband 00:09:36.27\00:09:39.14 but bear all the responsibility of taking care of her children 00:09:39.17\00:09:42.64 and her parents all by herself. 00:09:42.68\00:09:45.15 This can have devastating physical 00:09:45.18\00:09:47.12 and psychological effects on her. 00:09:47.15\00:09:49.48 Just for somebody like Jhorna Chiran, 00:09:49.52\00:09:54.12 her father passed away and mother is at home, 00:09:54.16\00:09:58.49 mother just illiterate and what she will do, 00:09:58.53\00:10:04.07 some house chores and all and sometimes 00:10:04.10\00:10:09.30 she is also doing day labors work 00:10:09.34\00:10:12.87 and what hope she will have? 00:10:12.91\00:10:17.15 So she would... 00:10:17.18\00:10:19.45 mother would like to have find husband for her 00:10:19.48\00:10:23.28 and give marriage early 00:10:23.32\00:10:25.29 so that the burden of mother will be over 00:10:25.32\00:10:28.72 and she will be on her own. 00:10:28.76\00:10:30.59 So this is the life if she would not study here, 00:10:30.63\00:10:35.26 that would happen. 00:10:35.30\00:10:36.63 One could only imagine the hardship Jhorna would face 00:10:41.74\00:10:44.84 if she didn't get a chance to go to Monosapara 00:10:44.87\00:10:47.41 or get sponsorship to continue her education. 00:10:47.44\00:10:50.55 In all probability, 00:10:50.58\00:10:52.18 she would remain in her village, 00:10:52.21\00:10:53.85 become a day laborer like her mother 00:10:53.88\00:10:55.88 or she would get married before she could turn 18, 00:10:55.92\00:10:58.75 start a family, 00:10:58.79\00:11:00.12 and continue life in perpetual poverty. 00:11:00.16\00:11:02.32 She is telling that if Jhorna didn't get sponsorship, 00:11:10.30\00:11:14.14 she cannot send her to the school 00:11:14.17\00:11:16.54 and she is telling 00:11:16.57\00:11:17.91 if she didn't send her to school, 00:11:17.94\00:11:22.48 she may work like her. 00:11:22.51\00:11:25.35 And she is telling that 00:11:25.38\00:11:27.52 Jhorna's father already passed away, 00:11:27.55\00:11:30.09 so it's very... 00:11:30.12\00:11:33.09 These children don't have people 00:11:33.12\00:11:35.12 who can support them, 00:11:35.16\00:11:36.62 promote them, look out for them, 00:11:36.66\00:11:38.53 and so they really don't know how to access this education 00:11:38.56\00:11:42.70 and also remember the education costs. 00:11:42.73\00:11:45.20 We might say it might be free, but it's really not free. 00:11:45.23\00:11:48.27 Even if you go to a government school, 00:11:48.30\00:11:50.71 you still have school clothes, books, there is a cost. 00:11:50.74\00:11:55.54 And some of these people are so poor, 00:11:55.58\00:11:57.35 they can't really provide this. 00:11:57.38\00:11:59.18 So these children are below zero, 00:11:59.21\00:12:02.02 they are not even up to par with other children, 00:12:02.05\00:12:04.35 the opportunities are less. 00:12:04.39\00:12:06.12 So by sponsoring children, 00:12:06.15\00:12:08.36 we give them that opportunity to break out of that cycle, 00:12:08.39\00:12:11.69 that vicious cycle of poverty and access something 00:12:11.73\00:12:15.43 that will create a better future for them. 00:12:15.46\00:12:19.90 Eleven years old Durjoy Chiran is from the same village 00:12:19.93\00:12:23.04 as Jhorna and goes to school at Monosapara. 00:12:23.07\00:12:26.07 He was eager to take us and meet with his grandparents 00:12:26.11\00:12:28.88 who received us warmly. 00:12:28.91\00:12:31.51 Meeting Durjoy's grandparents was just such a touching moment 00:12:31.55\00:12:35.95 because they held my hand tight, 00:12:35.98\00:12:38.25 they were just so grateful 00:12:38.29\00:12:40.09 that their grandson could have an education. 00:12:40.12\00:12:42.89 And here is a typical situation. 00:12:42.92\00:12:44.96 His parents have had to go to Dhaka, the capital city 00:12:44.99\00:12:48.86 because there's no work here in the fields. 00:12:48.90\00:12:51.37 And to be honest, 00:12:51.40\00:12:52.73 they are probably doing fairly lowly jobs in Dhaka. 00:12:52.77\00:12:55.70 But he is too young to go, 00:12:55.74\00:12:57.77 and so he is being given a special opportunity 00:12:57.81\00:13:00.58 that he can go to a boarding school and learn. 00:13:00.61\00:13:05.01 The grandparents are so proud, 00:13:05.05\00:13:07.22 and I am sure the parents are too. 00:13:07.25\00:13:09.32 But once again, here we are, 00:13:09.35\00:13:11.19 lifting this young boy out of poverty, 00:13:11.22\00:13:14.32 giving him a chance both in feeding him 00:13:14.36\00:13:17.96 but educating him and making his family so proud. 00:13:17.99\00:13:23.60 Meeting Durjoy's grandparents was an emotional experience, 00:13:23.63\00:13:26.74 as it was evident they loved their grandson very much 00:13:26.77\00:13:29.80 and want to see him come up in life. 00:13:29.84\00:13:33.11 Child Impact sponsorship program 00:13:33.14\00:13:35.04 is making a difference in Bangladesh 00:13:35.08\00:13:37.91 thanks to the thousands of sponsors 00:13:37.95\00:13:39.65 who support this program, 00:13:39.68\00:13:41.22 young boys and girls like Durjoy and Jhorna 00:13:41.25\00:13:43.89 can grow up in a safe environment, 00:13:43.92\00:13:45.75 receive a proper education, 00:13:45.79\00:13:47.69 and look forward to a brighter future. 00:13:47.72\00:13:50.06 I am Jim Rennie, 00:14:00.70\00:14:02.04 CEO of Child Impact International. 00:14:02.07\00:14:04.74 I've just returned from the country of Bangladesh. 00:14:04.77\00:14:07.74 Bangladesh is located North-East of India. 00:14:07.78\00:14:11.21 Bangladesh has a population of 163 million 00:14:11.25\00:14:15.08 and is actually one of the most densely 00:14:15.12\00:14:17.65 populated countries in the world. 00:14:17.69\00:14:20.42 For instance, 00:14:20.46\00:14:21.79 Los Angeles has 2,700 people 00:14:21.82\00:14:25.96 per square kilometer, 00:14:25.99\00:14:27.93 but the capital of Dhaka 00:14:27.96\00:14:29.80 has 23,900 people per square kilometer. 00:14:29.83\00:14:35.77 The Adventist church only has about 30,000 members 00:14:35.80\00:14:39.61 but the church school system has about 10,000 children 00:14:39.64\00:14:43.98 in small village schools 00:14:44.01\00:14:45.81 and also larger boarding schools. 00:14:45.85\00:14:48.65 The main religion is Islam, 00:14:48.68\00:14:50.65 and the education is the key outreach for the church. 00:14:50.69\00:14:54.36 Bangladesh is a low-lying land on a huge area of River Delta. 00:14:54.39\00:14:59.29 Late last year, Bangladesh suffered 00:14:59.33\00:15:01.76 the worst flooding in its history 00:15:01.80\00:15:04.23 with over 8 million people displaced or affected. 00:15:04.27\00:15:08.07 Thousands died in the floods. 00:15:08.10\00:15:10.67 Unfortunately, farming was devastated 00:15:10.71\00:15:13.01 by the flooding which caused food prices 00:15:13.04\00:15:15.68 to sky rocket in price and created food shortages. 00:15:15.71\00:15:20.32 In most of the country, prices still remain high. 00:15:20.35\00:15:24.02 This is for a huge financial strain on 00:15:24.05\00:15:26.42 our mission school finances. 00:15:26.45\00:15:28.82 Children are not getting sufficient nutrition 00:15:28.86\00:15:31.56 and the mission schools 00:15:31.59\00:15:32.93 are really struggling financially. 00:15:32.96\00:15:35.43 As I visited the schools, they asked for help. 00:15:35.46\00:15:38.70 I also visited the villages 00:15:38.73\00:15:40.87 where the children live in the poorer areas 00:15:40.90\00:15:43.51 and they are really struggling also. 00:15:43.54\00:15:45.87 As I saw the reality of what was happening, 00:15:45.91\00:15:48.64 I realized we just had to help. 00:15:48.68\00:15:51.18 We don't normally do food appeals, 00:15:51.21\00:15:53.42 but we have no option 00:15:53.45\00:15:54.82 but to help these children and also the mission schools. 00:15:54.85\00:15:58.65 We are asking you to help us purchase 00:15:58.69\00:16:01.29 5000 bags of rice for $35 a bag. 00:16:01.32\00:16:05.59 A bag is about 110 pound and feeds about 105 meals. 00:16:05.63\00:16:11.27 Each bag you can donate will ensure 00:16:11.30\00:16:13.70 that children are fed 00:16:13.74\00:16:15.07 but will also save the school's valuable funds. 00:16:15.10\00:16:19.14 You can donate 1 bag, 10 bags, 100 bags 00:16:19.17\00:16:22.71 or whatever you can share. 00:16:22.74\00:16:24.71 Each bag will impact on 00:16:24.75\00:16:26.61 hundreds of children's nutrition 00:16:26.65\00:16:29.52 and will give urgent financial relief 00:16:29.55\00:16:31.79 to those struggling mission schools, 00:16:31.82\00:16:34.19 some who are close to closing. 00:16:34.22\00:16:36.42 It's urgent, please help. 00:16:36.46\00:16:38.96 Just one bag for $35 or maybe 5 or 10 bags, 00:16:38.99\00:16:43.80 50 bags, whatever you can help with. 00:16:43.83\00:16:46.63 Please help these kids. 00:16:46.67\00:16:48.00 A couple of years ago, my daughters and I had 00:16:55.31\00:16:57.61 a wonderful opportunity to travel to India. 00:16:57.65\00:17:00.82 And while we were there, 00:17:00.85\00:17:02.18 we met yet another part of our family 00:17:02.22\00:17:04.19 and that's our sponsored daughter Sheila. 00:17:04.22\00:17:06.82 We've had the privilege of sponsoring Sheila 00:17:06.86\00:17:09.22 through Child Impact International 00:17:09.26\00:17:11.53 for more than three years now. 00:17:11.56\00:17:13.80 And, you know, while we were there, 00:17:13.83\00:17:15.73 she shared with us that her dream 00:17:15.76\00:17:18.20 was to become a nurse. 00:17:18.23\00:17:20.14 Now what a wonderful privilege it is for us now, as a family, 00:17:20.17\00:17:24.81 to know that she is fulfilling that dream. 00:17:24.84\00:17:28.08 Sheila is now studying to be a nurse. 00:17:28.11\00:17:30.75 She is in college, 00:17:30.78\00:17:32.11 and we cannot be happier for her. 00:17:32.15\00:17:34.55 It's been wonderful to be part of that journey with her. 00:17:34.58\00:17:37.99 And, you know, sponsoring a child 00:17:38.02\00:17:39.72 through Child Impact, 00:17:39.75\00:17:41.39 it's made an incredible difference 00:17:41.42\00:17:42.96 for our family, and I know that for you 00:17:42.99\00:17:45.73 sponsoring a child can make a difference for you too. 00:17:45.76\00:17:48.66 And most importantly, 00:17:48.70\00:17:50.03 it can make the difference 00:17:50.07\00:17:51.40 in the life of a child every day. 00:17:51.43\00:17:53.47 Child Impact International is all about children, 00:18:21.80\00:18:24.90 impacting children in a positive 00:18:24.93\00:18:26.84 and long-lasting way 00:18:26.87\00:18:28.47 through education and sponsorship. 00:18:28.50\00:18:31.27 Over the last couple of years, 00:18:31.31\00:18:33.01 Child Impact has focused its work in Bangladesh 00:18:33.04\00:18:35.68 by helping the school system achieve its potential. 00:18:35.71\00:18:38.61 Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries 00:18:38.65\00:18:40.72 in the world, 00:18:40.75\00:18:42.08 and a majority of students who attend our schools 00:18:42.12\00:18:44.19 come from poor backgrounds and depend on sponsorship. 00:18:44.22\00:18:47.72 The Seventh-day Adventist school system 00:19:05.01\00:19:07.08 in Bangladesh has over 10,000 students 00:19:07.11\00:19:09.78 and only 20% of them are paying students. 00:19:09.81\00:19:12.75 The rest are sponsored or seeking 00:19:12.78\00:19:14.58 some kind of sponsorship to continue their education. 00:19:14.62\00:19:17.89 This situation puts the schools in financial distress 00:19:17.92\00:19:20.96 and can have direct impact on the student's well being 00:19:20.99\00:19:23.86 as well as the quality of education. 00:19:23.89\00:19:26.06 This is where an organization 00:19:26.09\00:19:27.56 like Child Impact has a great impact. 00:19:27.60\00:19:32.27 Our sponsorship, to be honest, is one of the most direct ways 00:19:32.30\00:19:35.84 that the donor can get involved in the mission field. 00:19:35.87\00:19:39.54 And in a country like Bangladesh, 00:19:39.57\00:19:41.71 it has a massive impact. 00:19:41.74\00:19:43.68 And we are really grateful to our sponsors and donors 00:19:43.71\00:19:47.42 for the support that they give Child Impact. 00:19:47.45\00:19:50.75 But it's actually not about Child Impact, 00:19:50.79\00:19:53.19 It's actually about the children 00:19:53.22\00:19:55.32 who that they support every month 00:19:55.36\00:19:58.03 and make a real difference. 00:19:58.06\00:20:00.53 Sponsoring children in activities like 00:20:00.56\00:20:05.40 these mission schools and opportunities 00:20:05.43\00:20:08.24 is a tremendous way to help form the character 00:20:08.27\00:20:12.54 of young people as they look to the future. 00:20:12.57\00:20:15.71 They will never forget their association 00:20:15.74\00:20:18.85 in a Christian environment. 00:20:18.88\00:20:20.95 It is absolutely a powerful witness to sponsor 00:20:20.98\00:20:25.35 a child in Child Impact and so many other organizations 00:20:25.39\00:20:30.89 that help young people to find Jesus. 00:20:30.93\00:20:34.20 Child Impact is a unique organization. 00:20:39.83\00:20:42.40 It is not just a sponsorship agency 00:20:42.44\00:20:44.87 but, as Jim said, 00:20:44.91\00:20:46.24 it gives sponsors a unique opportunity 00:20:46.27\00:20:48.38 to be involved in the mission field every day. 00:20:48.41\00:20:51.38 In mission fields like Bangladesh, 00:20:51.41\00:20:53.11 the child depends on the sponsor, 00:20:53.15\00:20:54.92 and so the sponsor is not only impacting 00:20:54.95\00:20:57.09 the life of a child 00:20:57.12\00:20:58.45 but making a significant difference 00:20:58.49\00:20:59.89 in the mission schools, big and small. 00:20:59.92\00:21:03.39 Just walking into a small rural mission school here 00:21:03.43\00:21:06.86 in Bangladesh really allows you to see the difference 00:21:06.90\00:21:11.37 that sponsorship in education makes 00:21:11.40\00:21:14.40 because these children come from rural farming communities 00:21:14.44\00:21:18.54 where, to be honest, 00:21:18.57\00:21:20.11 there is a severe shortage of funds 00:21:20.14\00:21:22.94 and food sometimes. 00:21:22.98\00:21:24.85 And so these children are being given hope, 00:21:24.88\00:21:27.22 and these children are being given an education, 00:21:27.25\00:21:30.35 and here we see the difference that sponsorship is making. 00:21:30.39\00:21:36.56 The Bangladesh Union Mission 00:21:36.59\00:21:38.06 runs many such village schools in the community. 00:21:38.09\00:21:40.80 These village schools also act as feeder schools 00:21:40.83\00:21:43.37 for bigger institutions like Monosapara Adventist Seminary. 00:21:43.40\00:21:46.84 Borsha Mankim came to Monosapara in 2014 00:22:06.19\00:22:09.76 and is a seventh grade student. 00:22:09.79\00:22:11.69 Borsha is a recipient of Child Impact sponsorship 00:22:11.73\00:22:14.73 that she has been receiving 00:22:14.76\00:22:16.10 from a primary level at her village. 00:22:16.13\00:22:17.63 Borsha comes from Shibananda Khila, 00:22:35.08\00:22:37.32 a small village about one-hour drive from Monosapara. 00:22:37.35\00:22:41.26 Visiting her village and meeting her grandparents, 00:22:41.29\00:22:43.63 it was evident they were facing hardship 00:22:43.66\00:22:45.79 and it emphasize the need for sponsorship 00:22:45.83\00:22:48.10 for children like Borsha. 00:22:48.13\00:22:49.60 Borsha's parents are day laborers 00:23:13.39\00:23:15.12 who worked in the paddy fields owned by landlords. 00:23:15.16\00:23:17.99 But a severe drought last year 00:23:18.03\00:23:19.53 made jobs unavailable for them in the village. 00:23:19.56\00:23:22.13 With no daily wages, 00:23:22.16\00:23:23.77 they struggled to feed the family 00:23:23.80\00:23:25.50 and were forced to borrow money. 00:23:25.53\00:23:27.20 Unable to settle their debt, 00:23:27.24\00:23:28.57 they decided to move to Dhaka, 00:23:28.60\00:23:30.11 the capital city to earn some money 00:23:30.14\00:23:32.17 and pay back their debt. 00:23:32.21\00:23:34.28 Families facing such financial hardship 00:23:34.31\00:23:36.75 have only one thing on their mind, 00:23:36.78\00:23:38.91 feeding their family. 00:23:38.95\00:23:40.48 In such circumstances, 00:23:40.52\00:23:42.02 the thought of educating their children 00:23:42.05\00:23:43.82 takes the backseat. 00:23:43.85\00:23:45.29 It's not hard to imagine 00:23:45.32\00:23:47.16 what would have happened to Borsha 00:23:47.19\00:23:48.82 if she didn't go to school. 00:23:48.86\00:23:50.66 If they wouldn't have the sponsorship 00:23:50.69\00:23:52.89 and continued their education, 00:23:52.93\00:23:55.56 they would remain the same as their parents 00:23:55.60\00:23:59.93 and they would be the day laborers 00:23:59.97\00:24:02.50 and especially for girls, they would have early marriage 00:24:02.54\00:24:06.37 and will be just a day laborer and without hope in this world. 00:24:06.41\00:24:11.95 Today, thanks to Borsha's sponsors, 00:24:39.84\00:24:42.28 she can leave behind the hardship of her parents, 00:24:42.31\00:24:44.81 break away from the cycle of poverty, 00:24:44.85\00:24:46.82 and focus on her studies at Monosapara. 00:24:46.85\00:24:49.42 She wants to become a nurse, and at Monosapara, 00:24:49.45\00:24:52.55 she has the opportunity to realize her dreams. 00:24:52.59\00:24:57.49 As the in-charge of sponsorship program here in Bangladesh, 00:24:57.53\00:25:02.33 I see the great impact 00:25:02.36\00:25:05.77 on children and their education. 00:25:05.80\00:25:09.27 And if we have more sponsors coming forward 00:25:09.30\00:25:14.01 to help these kids to give hope in their life, 00:25:14.04\00:25:19.41 and the impact in their life would be greater. 00:25:19.45\00:25:24.52 Well, after today, riding by motorbike 00:25:24.55\00:25:27.79 and coming to the villages, 00:25:27.82\00:25:29.82 coming to where these children live, 00:25:29.86\00:25:32.49 it has really strengthened my belief on what we do. 00:25:32.53\00:25:36.06 I've actually seen the homes these children come from 00:25:36.10\00:25:40.04 and then I see the difference that's being made 00:25:40.07\00:25:43.00 at the schools where they go. 00:25:43.04\00:25:45.97 And you really have to come and see 00:25:46.01\00:25:49.11 where they come from. 00:25:49.14\00:25:50.68 You have to come and see the challenges 00:25:50.71\00:25:53.38 they are facing in their homes and their communities. 00:25:53.42\00:25:57.65 With poverty, with getting work, 00:25:57.69\00:26:00.79 it just shows me that by having an education, 00:26:00.82\00:26:04.09 they've got hope, 00:26:04.13\00:26:05.46 they've got a little edge to do something better. 00:26:05.49\00:26:08.06 Some of them have got brothers and sisters 00:26:08.10\00:26:10.33 who have gone to the big cities to work. 00:26:10.37\00:26:12.87 And to be honest, all is they are working is on 00:26:12.90\00:26:15.37 construction sites or low-paid jobs. 00:26:15.40\00:26:19.67 But these children when they have got an education 00:26:19.71\00:26:22.61 and to have to walk through the fields, 00:26:22.64\00:26:25.78 to have to see the houses they are living in, 00:26:25.81\00:26:28.78 it's pretty touching. 00:26:28.82\00:26:30.32 And today, I'm strengthened 00:26:30.35\00:26:33.66 that I know that what we are doing is great. 00:26:33.69\00:26:36.19
