A television series Open Motion has been a big success. 00:00:10.74\00:00:15.18 And we want to continue to share with you 00:00:15.21\00:00:17.81 some of the field stories 00:00:17.85\00:00:19.58 that we have filmed over the years. 00:00:19.61\00:00:21.85 So just from time to time, 00:00:21.88\00:00:23.99 it might refer to Asian Aid 00:00:24.02\00:00:26.25 as we reflect on these great stories 00:00:26.29\00:00:29.32 as we share them with you. 00:00:29.36\00:00:30.73 Child Impact International is an organization giving help, 00:00:46.61\00:00:50.55 previously called Asian Aid. the welfare of children, 00:01:26.98\00:01:29.15 implementing diverse development projects 00:01:29.18\00:01:31.62 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:01:31.65\00:01:33.76 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:01:33.79\00:01:36.93 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:01:36.96\00:01:39.83 and the blind children, giving them a sense of place, 00:01:39.86\00:01:43.16 a home, but above all, 00:01:43.20\00:01:44.90 Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:44.93\00:01:47.87 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:47.90\00:01:51.24 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:51.27\00:01:54.01 This is Hope In Motion. 00:01:54.04\00:01:55.81 A couple of years ago, Jean Boonstra, 00:02:08.32\00:02:10.76 Associate Speaker of Voice of Prophecy, 00:02:10.79\00:02:13.16 visited India with Child Impact International. 00:02:13.19\00:02:16.63 Jean and her family have been 00:02:16.67\00:02:18.00 privileged to sponsor a girl through Child impact. 00:02:18.03\00:02:21.04 It has been a blessing for Jean and her family 00:02:21.07\00:02:23.34 to be able to make a difference in her life. 00:02:23.37\00:02:25.37 During her trip to India, 00:02:30.85\00:02:32.35 Jean met some amazing people 00:02:32.38\00:02:34.18 who were the driving force behind Child Impact's mission 00:02:34.22\00:02:37.15 to reach out to those in need. 00:02:37.19\00:02:39.05 She met with Anita, who was in charge 00:02:39.09\00:02:41.09 of Child Impact's Operation Child Rescue program in India. 00:02:41.12\00:02:45.09 Operation Child Rescue is a program that rescues 00:02:45.13\00:02:48.30 and rehabilitates girls who are trafficked 00:02:48.33\00:02:50.73 and sold as prostitutes in the sex industry. 00:02:50.77\00:02:53.74 Jean got to talk to Anita, 00:02:53.77\00:02:55.44 and she shared with her the challenges 00:02:55.47\00:02:57.37 and the dangers that she and her team face 00:02:57.41\00:02:59.97 in rescuing these girls. 00:03:00.01\00:03:03.55 Anita, it's nice to see you again. 00:03:03.58\00:03:05.41 We met a little while ago, 00:03:05.45\00:03:06.95 and it's wonderful to visit with you again. 00:03:06.98\00:03:10.49 You're the director 00:03:10.52\00:03:11.85 of Operation Child Rescue in India. 00:03:11.89\00:03:14.19 Can you tell me a little bit, just briefly, 00:03:14.22\00:03:16.93 what that organization's all about? 00:03:16.96\00:03:19.33 Well, Jean, it's lovely to meet you again. 00:03:19.36\00:03:22.30 As the name suggests, Operation Rescue 00:03:22.33\00:03:24.23 is about rescuing women, children, babies, 00:03:24.27\00:03:28.34 who have been subjected to the worst kind of abuse 00:03:28.37\00:03:31.07 and who have been trafficked for different reasons. 00:03:31.11\00:03:34.78 It could be children who have been 00:03:34.81\00:03:36.85 forced to beg on the streets 00:03:36.88\00:03:38.61 or it could be children who are being forced to work 00:03:38.65\00:03:41.15 in hazardous industries like bag manufacturing, 00:03:41.18\00:03:46.19 basically working long hours and against their will 00:03:46.22\00:03:50.26 or it could be girls and women 00:03:50.29\00:03:51.89 who are trafficked to the worst of the brothels, 00:03:51.93\00:03:55.23 locked inside and forced to see customers 00:03:55.26\00:03:58.07 every day against their will. 00:03:58.10\00:04:01.50 And this is a global issue, 00:04:01.54\00:04:03.87 but you are headquartered in Bangalore, India. 00:04:03.91\00:04:08.08 Tell me how long have you been 00:04:08.11\00:04:09.44 doing this work yourself personally. 00:04:09.48\00:04:11.61 Well, it started about 10 years ago, 00:04:11.65\00:04:13.45 so 10 years is a good time to say 00:04:13.48\00:04:15.68 I have been doing this work. 00:04:15.72\00:04:17.82 We started off basically 00:04:17.85\00:04:19.45 looking at the whole issue of trafficking 00:04:19.49\00:04:22.62 and whether it existed in Bangalore 00:04:22.66\00:04:25.03 and where children being trafficked for 00:04:25.06\00:04:28.06 and we've ended up now doing rescues with the police 00:04:28.10\00:04:32.43 and finding rehabilitation options 00:04:32.47\00:04:35.14 for those whom we rescue. 00:04:35.17\00:04:36.97 We also do a little bit of prevention 00:04:37.01\00:04:39.74 in areas where we find more children going missing 00:04:39.77\00:04:42.41 or more girls being recruited for jobs 00:04:42.44\00:04:45.61 to prevent that from happening. 00:04:45.65\00:04:49.22 You know, it's hard to hear the stories 00:04:49.25\00:04:52.05 of what you're doing 00:04:52.09\00:04:53.42 because you're dealing with some 00:04:53.46\00:04:54.79 really, really sad situations. 00:04:54.82\00:04:57.79 Children are in danger, young women are in danger. 00:04:57.83\00:05:01.26 Let's talk for a minute about the young girls. 00:05:01.30\00:05:04.17 They are recruited from rural areas, typically. 00:05:04.20\00:05:07.40 Tell us a little bit about how do they get recruited 00:05:07.44\00:05:09.94 and what age are these girls. 00:05:09.97\00:05:12.07 Well, when we first started work 00:05:12.11\00:05:14.21 and when we first started rescues, the girls were... 00:05:14.24\00:05:16.75 the average age was about 17. 00:05:16.78\00:05:20.22 But today, the girls are much younger, 00:05:20.25\00:05:22.82 and the average age is close to 14. 00:05:22.85\00:05:26.09 Oh, my! 00:05:26.12\00:05:27.46 You know, really young girls 00:05:27.49\00:05:28.92 being recruited out of schools even. 00:05:28.96\00:05:32.86 You asked me about why they get recruited. 00:05:32.89\00:05:35.86 Well, it's a combination 00:05:35.90\00:05:37.23 of a different number of factors, 00:05:37.27\00:05:39.27 poverty being the number one factor 00:05:39.30\00:05:42.40 that makes them vulnerable to this. 00:05:42.44\00:05:44.21 So they're very poor, 00:05:44.24\00:05:46.44 they don't know about the issue of trafficking. 00:05:46.47\00:05:50.31 Usually, they don't have the scaling, 00:05:50.35\00:05:51.91 so they can't get jobs, 00:05:51.95\00:05:53.75 or they're in school but drop out 00:05:53.78\00:05:56.55 for different reasons, either to look after a sibling 00:05:56.58\00:05:59.42 or a parent not being well or the school just not being 00:05:59.45\00:06:04.03 important enough for them to complete education, 00:06:04.06\00:06:06.66 and so they are pulled out of school to get married. 00:06:06.70\00:06:09.60 And it's at this time that the traffickers 00:06:09.63\00:06:12.40 prey on these vulnerabilities. 00:06:12.43\00:06:14.34 You know, the girl is at home, 00:06:14.37\00:06:15.90 or the girl is looking for a job, 00:06:15.94\00:06:18.94 or the girl just wants 00:06:18.97\00:06:20.41 to get out of this poverty situation, 00:06:20.44\00:06:22.64 and they prey on this 00:06:22.68\00:06:24.01 and will go in and recruit them. 00:06:24.05\00:06:26.01 Sometimes they send in people and, 00:06:26.05\00:06:28.32 you know, fall in love with them 00:06:28.35\00:06:29.78 and promise a better life and to marry them. 00:06:29.82\00:06:33.22 Sometimes they offer them jobs, 00:06:33.25\00:06:34.86 they will come in and say, "We will get you a job." 00:06:34.89\00:06:38.59 And because they're so naive 00:06:38.63\00:06:40.96 and have no knowledge of what this is, 00:06:41.00\00:06:43.50 they will go with them, 00:06:43.53\00:06:44.87 but of course the job doesn't exist 00:06:44.90\00:06:46.23 on the other side or it exists in a much, much worse way 00:06:46.27\00:06:48.94 than they would've ever thought. 00:06:48.97\00:06:51.27 And sometimes when they take babies, 00:06:51.31\00:06:54.38 they kidnap them, so the younger children... 00:06:54.41\00:06:57.25 So just snatched from their mothers or their homes? 00:06:57.28\00:06:59.55 Yes, snatched from hospitals even. 00:06:59.58\00:07:01.52 Wow. 00:07:01.55\00:07:02.88 Even they've taken babies, kidnap babies from hospitals. 00:07:02.92\00:07:05.75 They take babies from orphanages, 00:07:05.79\00:07:09.46 or young children and they will sell them 00:07:09.49\00:07:11.49 to the begging syndicates. 00:07:11.53\00:07:13.03 Okay. 00:07:13.06\00:07:14.40 That put these children out on the streets, 00:07:14.43\00:07:16.43 and they have to bring in 00:07:16.46\00:07:17.80 a certain amount of money every day. 00:07:17.83\00:07:21.14 So these young girls 00:07:21.17\00:07:22.74 are willing to take sort of a risk 00:07:22.77\00:07:25.44 because they're vulnerable, 00:07:25.47\00:07:27.44 they're a little bit naive to the danger, 00:07:27.48\00:07:30.31 they're looking to help to their family 00:07:30.35\00:07:32.21 and or to support themselves, a number of factors. 00:07:32.25\00:07:36.58 As you go in, and you actually rescue girls 00:07:36.62\00:07:39.45 from these brothels, 00:07:39.49\00:07:40.99 just walk us through a little bit 00:07:41.02\00:07:42.69 how that process works. 00:07:42.72\00:07:47.16 I have learnt over the years 00:07:47.20\00:07:50.10 not to break down to react in the right ways. 00:07:50.13\00:07:53.30 My first time inside a brothel, I was terrified 00:07:53.34\00:07:56.20 because I didn't expect what we saw. 00:07:56.24\00:07:59.31 Usually, these places are... 00:07:59.34\00:08:01.38 They select places that are easy hiding places 00:08:01.41\00:08:05.71 so you have number of rooms inside a main entrance. 00:08:05.75\00:08:09.18 If it's a house or a building, it will have a number of rooms 00:08:09.22\00:08:12.92 and individual rooms that are used for commercial sex. 00:08:12.95\00:08:18.26 So when we enter these places, 00:08:18.29\00:08:19.76 we often have to bust the front door 00:08:19.79\00:08:22.13 or we have to enter in without them knowing it 00:08:22.16\00:08:25.63 so they're not alerted to it. 00:08:25.67\00:08:27.00 Okay. 00:08:27.04\00:08:28.37 We usually have a team of about 10 or 12 00:08:28.40\00:08:30.81 including a few police. 00:08:30.84\00:08:33.31 We run inside the place, we're always looking 00:08:33.34\00:08:35.94 to grab the girls before they're hidden 00:08:35.98\00:08:37.75 or before they're forced into some hiding place. 00:08:37.78\00:08:41.72 So surprise is key. 00:08:41.75\00:08:43.72 Surprise is key, safety for ourselves, 00:08:43.75\00:08:47.46 we're looking out for an escape route 00:08:47.49\00:08:49.89 in case something goes wrong 00:08:49.92\00:08:52.16 and we all are just stuck inside that place. 00:08:52.19\00:08:55.50 The girls themselves are taken by surprise. 00:08:55.53\00:08:59.27 Oftentimes they are scared, they will cry, 00:08:59.30\00:09:02.20 there's a lot of drama that happens inside 00:09:02.24\00:09:05.27 that the police are shouting, 00:09:05.31\00:09:06.64 the traffickers are trying to get out, 00:09:06.68\00:09:08.21 escape, you know, 00:09:08.24\00:09:09.58 they're trying to jump out of some place. 00:09:09.61\00:09:11.88 And then the girls themselves, you know, they're crying, 00:09:11.91\00:09:15.25 wondering what's going to happen. 00:09:15.28\00:09:18.52 At that point, we can't say that they are happy to see us 00:09:18.55\00:09:21.52 because they don't know who we are. 00:09:21.56\00:09:23.39 Are they questioning that you're there to help them? 00:09:23.43\00:09:26.46 Yes. Yes. Some... Oftentimes? Okay. 00:09:26.49\00:09:28.36 But the moment that initial drama is over, 00:09:28.40\00:09:31.83 then we get some quiet time. 00:09:31.87\00:09:33.44 Good. 00:09:33.47\00:09:34.80 To tell them who we are, and why we're there, 00:09:34.84\00:09:37.71 and that we really are interested 00:09:37.74\00:09:40.28 in their long-term future. 00:09:40.31\00:09:41.94 So it's not about now, it's about the future. 00:09:41.98\00:09:45.28 And then we want to see them out of this life 00:09:45.31\00:09:47.22 and many of them will break down 00:09:47.25\00:09:49.42 and cry and tell you the reason why they're there. 00:09:49.45\00:09:51.92 You know, they will say, 00:09:51.95\00:09:53.29 "We were so poor, so naive, 00:09:53.32\00:09:55.02 we didn't know, we were promised a job," 00:09:55.06\00:09:57.46 and the story is almost the same 00:09:57.49\00:10:00.26 again and again and again. 00:10:00.30\00:10:01.63 Over and over again. Yeah, it's... 00:10:01.66\00:10:03.03 You wonder how could people be like this when... 00:10:03.06\00:10:06.33 But you'd realize that they are all from different places. 00:10:06.37\00:10:09.37 Even if they were, say form Bangladesh 00:10:09.40\00:10:11.37 and we're seeing increasing number of girls 00:10:11.41\00:10:13.34 from Bangladesh and Nepal in Bangalore. 00:10:13.38\00:10:15.68 Brought into Bangalore. Yes, yes. 00:10:15.71\00:10:18.78 They don't know each other 00:10:18.81\00:10:20.48 and they're all recruited in the same way. 00:10:20.52\00:10:23.89 You Know, somebody marries them, 00:10:23.92\00:10:25.25 somebody promises them a job, brings them across the border, 00:10:25.29\00:10:28.49 puts them on a train, 00:10:28.52\00:10:30.29 tells them they're going for job in a massage parlor, 00:10:30.33\00:10:32.83 beauty parlor, as a housemaid, 00:10:32.86\00:10:35.63 and they end up in this building. 00:10:35.66\00:10:38.27 So the city of Bangalore, 00:10:38.30\00:10:39.70 it's an absolutely beautiful city. 00:10:39.73\00:10:41.94 It's an IT hub, it's a very... 00:10:41.97\00:10:44.11 what I noticed as a visitor 00:10:44.14\00:10:45.74 anyway coming to visit your city of Bangalore, 00:10:45.77\00:10:48.81 it's got a beautiful mix of modern 00:10:48.84\00:10:51.38 with the IT industry and rich history, 00:10:51.41\00:10:54.28 a lovely climate, 00:10:54.32\00:10:55.65 it's absolutely a wonderful place. 00:10:55.68\00:10:58.62 So in that city, 00:10:58.65\00:11:00.26 how do you then before you make these raids, 00:11:00.29\00:11:02.42 how do you learn and work to find out 00:11:02.46\00:11:05.49 where these brothels are? 00:11:05.53\00:11:06.86 How do you make those inroads before you have a rescue? 00:11:06.90\00:11:10.77 We have been working to develop these contacts. 00:11:10.80\00:11:14.37 Like you said, on the surface, it is a beautiful city. 00:11:14.40\00:11:18.37 We don't have a red light district 00:11:18.41\00:11:20.58 unlike in Mumbai and Calcutta, 00:11:20.61\00:11:22.44 they have areas where, 00:11:22.48\00:11:23.91 you know, these girls are being taken 00:11:23.95\00:11:26.05 and where sex is offered, 00:11:26.08\00:11:27.65 but Bangalore doesn't have that. 00:11:27.68\00:11:30.72 It used to be more of a pensioner's paradise 00:11:30.75\00:11:32.89 till it became an IT city. 00:11:32.92\00:11:34.32 Okay. 00:11:34.36\00:11:35.69 So everything is very hidden 00:11:35.72\00:11:38.26 which makes it more difficult for us 00:11:38.29\00:11:39.66 because we have to search. 00:11:39.69\00:11:41.60 We really have to look out for places 00:11:41.63\00:11:43.73 where these girls are being hidden, 00:11:43.77\00:11:45.13 where they're brought in. 00:11:45.17\00:11:46.50 So we have a team of investigators, 00:11:46.53\00:11:50.37 whose job is to befriend the underworld, 00:11:50.41\00:11:53.38 you know, befriend pimps, befriend auto rickshaw drivers 00:11:53.41\00:11:57.48 who will transport these girls, 00:11:57.51\00:11:59.15 befriend the people 00:11:59.18\00:12:01.72 that work in the really sidey hotels, 00:12:01.75\00:12:05.65 where the girls are pimped often. 00:12:05.69\00:12:08.79 And we sometimes go in as customers and clients, 00:12:08.82\00:12:11.59 sometimes as pimps ourselves 00:12:11.63\00:12:14.00 to try and access the information. 00:12:14.03\00:12:16.50 As to where these girls are being held. 00:12:16.53\00:12:18.77 And once we have that information 00:12:18.80\00:12:20.34 and we know for sure that in this building, 00:12:20.37\00:12:23.37 trafficking is... 00:12:23.41\00:12:24.74 we know trafficked girl is being held 00:12:24.77\00:12:26.54 or a brothel is being run, 00:12:26.57\00:12:28.04 then we go to the police with that information 00:12:28.08\00:12:30.48 completely charted out plan of rescue 00:12:30.51\00:12:34.08 including escape routes, entry, 00:12:34.12\00:12:37.15 number of people inside the building, 00:12:37.19\00:12:39.52 and the number of girls, the approximate ages, 00:12:39.55\00:12:44.29 as much information as we can 00:12:44.33\00:12:46.29 because before we go into the rescue, 00:12:46.33\00:12:49.13 we're not going to get another opportunity 00:12:49.16\00:12:51.23 or the police can't go in... 00:12:51.27\00:12:52.60 Right. 00:12:52.63\00:12:53.97 Before the rescue because there will be an alert. 00:12:54.00\00:12:57.37 So you sort of have to one chance to do it right. 00:12:57.41\00:13:00.64 Because there are no second chances. 00:13:00.68\00:13:02.14 Yes, yes. 00:13:02.18\00:13:05.81 As you just heard a need of share, 00:13:05.85\00:13:07.62 the problem of trafficking is rampant in India. 00:13:07.65\00:13:10.42 The dangers involved in this mission 00:13:10.45\00:13:12.25 to save these young girls from trafficking are many. 00:13:12.29\00:13:15.39 When we come back, we will hear from Anita 00:13:15.42\00:13:17.39 how Child Impact International is helping her and her team 00:13:17.43\00:13:20.76 with the rescue operations. 00:13:20.80\00:13:22.33 I just got a letter from our sponsored daughter Sheela. 00:13:26.40\00:13:29.30 I've got to tell you, 00:13:29.34\00:13:30.67 there is nothing like getting one of these letters. 00:13:30.71\00:13:33.04 Our family has been able to sponsor her 00:13:33.07\00:13:34.84 through Child Impact International. 00:13:34.88\00:13:36.98 And because of that, 00:13:37.01\00:13:38.35 she's got a great place to live. 00:13:38.38\00:13:39.85 She's got good food, she's got great clothing, 00:13:39.88\00:13:42.85 best of all, I now found out she's in college. 00:13:42.88\00:13:46.05 She's in nursing school. 00:13:46.09\00:13:47.82 There's nothing like getting a letter like this. 00:13:47.86\00:13:51.03 You need to start getting these letters too. 00:13:51.06\00:13:53.13 Listen, through Child Impact, 00:13:53.16\00:13:54.76 you can make a huge difference in the life of a child. 00:13:54.80\00:13:58.13 And I promise you, 00:13:58.17\00:13:59.50 it's going to make a huge difference 00:13:59.53\00:14:01.20 in your life too. 00:14:01.24\00:14:02.57 At every one of these mission schools, 00:14:13.05\00:14:14.58 like this one on Bangladesh, 00:14:14.62\00:14:16.48 Child Impact International sponsors hundreds of children. 00:14:16.52\00:14:20.29 We often think that sponsorship only impacts 00:14:20.32\00:14:23.56 on the life of the child, but it's much wider than that. 00:14:23.59\00:14:27.13 It impacts on the parents and on the community. 00:14:27.16\00:14:30.67 But more important, it impacts on the school. 00:14:30.70\00:14:34.04 It becomes valuable income for this school 00:14:34.07\00:14:37.04 and then in turn it impacts on hundreds of other children. 00:14:37.07\00:14:40.98 I just ask that you would consider 00:14:41.01\00:14:43.28 sponsoring a child with Child Impact 00:14:43.31\00:14:45.81 or supporting one of its valuable projects 00:14:45.85\00:14:48.55 that will improve education 00:14:48.58\00:14:50.45 and had been in these mission schools 00:14:50.49\00:14:52.35 like this one right here. 00:14:52.39\00:14:54.32 So, Anita, after you go in, you and your team, 00:15:07.57\00:15:10.94 and you actually go in 00:15:10.97\00:15:12.31 on these raids yourself personally, 00:15:12.34\00:15:14.28 these girls, you work with them for a little while. 00:15:14.31\00:15:17.01 Then what's the next step? 00:15:17.05\00:15:19.15 How do they transition from that life 00:15:19.18\00:15:22.68 back to somewhat a regular life? 00:15:22.72\00:15:25.89 Once we finish the rescues, 00:15:25.92\00:15:27.46 we take them to the police station 00:15:27.49\00:15:30.46 for a little bit, 00:15:30.49\00:15:32.39 where their stories are taken, their photos are taken, 00:15:32.43\00:15:34.60 and then we have to take them 00:15:34.63\00:15:37.47 to a government shelter according to the law. 00:15:37.50\00:15:41.14 The first place after their rescue 00:15:41.17\00:15:42.94 has to be the government shelter. 00:15:42.97\00:15:44.91 And these are basically sets of buildings with staff, 00:15:44.94\00:15:50.71 but they're not specific to trafficked victims. 00:15:50.75\00:15:53.78 So you can have abandoned girls there, 00:15:53.82\00:15:55.95 you can have a pregnant mother there, 00:15:55.98\00:15:59.09 you know, premarital. 00:15:59.12\00:16:01.59 You can have someone who has lost their family, 00:16:01.62\00:16:05.59 you can have somebody who's lost, 00:16:05.63\00:16:07.73 got off the train at the wrong stop. 00:16:07.76\00:16:09.86 So it's just a mixed group of people 00:16:09.90\00:16:12.63 inside that place 00:16:12.67\00:16:14.00 and these girls are taken to that place. 00:16:14.04\00:16:15.64 Usually, we do the rescues quite late at night. 00:16:15.67\00:16:19.71 For that surprise factor. Yes. 00:16:19.74\00:16:21.88 And so between about 2 am or 3 am, 00:16:21.91\00:16:24.81 we end up in this place. 00:16:24.85\00:16:26.38 So the girls are, you know, there are about three gates 00:16:26.41\00:16:32.05 before you get inside the place. 00:16:32.09\00:16:33.62 It's almost like a jail. It looks like that. It's... 00:16:33.66\00:16:36.99 Sounds intimidating. It is. 00:16:37.03\00:16:38.56 Then once there, 00:16:38.59\00:16:41.56 the girl's case has to come up for hearing, 00:16:41.60\00:16:44.80 and we have to find out their backgrounds. 00:16:44.83\00:16:48.84 Many times because it's a government-run shelter, 00:16:48.87\00:16:52.11 the traffickers can end up coming right there. 00:16:52.14\00:16:54.51 Really? 00:16:54.54\00:16:55.88 Yeah, they pose as an aunt, 00:16:55.91\00:16:57.38 a mother, a sister, a brother... 00:16:57.41\00:16:58.95 Okay. 00:16:58.98\00:17:00.32 The only relative in that place. 00:17:00.35\00:17:02.52 And because they have so many cases 00:17:02.55\00:17:05.39 and so many people turning up, they don't check credentials. 00:17:05.42\00:17:11.73 And so they can come, turn up with, 00:17:11.76\00:17:13.76 you know, a false document. 00:17:13.80\00:17:15.90 And we have had many such ones. 00:17:15.93\00:17:18.53 And they can release the girl or they get to see the girl 00:17:18.57\00:17:20.97 intimidate her more 00:17:21.00\00:17:22.80 or promise to get them out of that place 00:17:22.84\00:17:24.84 because by then the girls 00:17:24.87\00:17:26.21 really want to get out of that place. 00:17:26.24\00:17:27.58 They don't speak the local language, 00:17:27.61\00:17:29.14 the food is not something that they like. 00:17:29.18\00:17:32.21 Government-issued food essentially, yeah. 00:17:32.25\00:17:33.82 Yes. And then many times they've told us 00:17:33.85\00:17:36.05 that they are lice in the food or lice in the coffee. 00:17:36.08\00:17:38.49 Oh, my. 00:17:38.52\00:17:39.85 You know, yeah, and the others are really mean to them 00:17:39.89\00:17:41.96 because they find out 00:17:41.99\00:17:43.32 that they have been involved in sex, commercial sex, 00:17:43.36\00:17:46.83 and they label them the stigma of being in that place. 00:17:46.86\00:17:51.80 You know, you just want to get out. 00:17:51.83\00:17:53.17 They're desperate to get out. 00:17:53.20\00:17:54.54 Many times, these girls have tried to cut their wrists 00:17:54.57\00:17:57.77 and we get a call to say, 00:17:57.81\00:17:59.14 "Please come and take the girls you rescued out of this place 00:17:59.17\00:18:01.61 because they're disturbing everybody else." 00:18:01.64\00:18:03.98 And you go there and they say, 00:18:04.01\00:18:05.51 "We just want to go out of this place, 00:18:05.55\00:18:06.88 the brothel was better." 00:18:06.92\00:18:08.88 That's so harsh, so harsh. Sounds horrible. 00:18:08.92\00:18:11.52 How many days or how much time 00:18:11.55\00:18:13.49 are they in this place generally? 00:18:13.52\00:18:15.56 Well, it can be anything 00:18:15.59\00:18:16.93 between two months to two years. 00:18:16.96\00:18:18.89 Oh, wow. 00:18:18.93\00:18:20.86 Are they cared for their physical needs, I mean... 00:18:20.90\00:18:24.30 Oh, yes. I mean, I hate to be very... 00:18:24.33\00:18:27.60 I hate to talk about it. 00:18:27.64\00:18:28.97 But the life they were living in the brothel, 00:18:29.00\00:18:31.71 they had a lot of physical injuries I assume. 00:18:31.74\00:18:35.18 Obviously, it's emotional, mental, 00:18:35.21\00:18:36.81 are those things addressed at all in the government home? 00:18:36.85\00:18:41.48 The government does provide a shelter, 00:18:41.52\00:18:43.65 so there is food, there is a sense of... 00:18:43.69\00:18:47.96 they have water and clothes 00:18:47.99\00:18:49.69 and people talk to them, 00:18:49.72\00:18:52.26 but the abuse is sometimes is in different ways. 00:18:52.29\00:18:55.20 There's a lot of sexual abuse 00:18:55.23\00:18:56.56 that happens within those shelters, 00:18:56.60\00:18:58.53 especially to the younger children. 00:18:58.57\00:19:00.97 We did a rescue of boys 00:19:01.00\00:19:03.30 who had been trafficked 00:19:03.34\00:19:04.67 from Bihar to Bangalore for labor. 00:19:04.71\00:19:08.01 And some of these boys were aged 9 to 12. 00:19:08.04\00:19:11.61 And when we visited them about a week later, 00:19:11.65\00:19:14.58 a couple of them said, 00:19:14.62\00:19:16.18 they didn't like what all the boys were doing to them 00:19:16.22\00:19:19.15 which is implying sexual abuse 00:19:19.19\00:19:21.52 inside a government shelter 00:19:21.56\00:19:23.16 that is meant to be a protective place. 00:19:23.19\00:19:26.70 It sounds like it's taking them from a bad situation 00:19:26.73\00:19:31.80 and putting them in a so-so situation 00:19:31.83\00:19:34.34 and in that specific case, a worse situation. 00:19:34.37\00:19:38.31 So it doesn't sound like it's an answer, 00:19:38.34\00:19:40.31 but you also don't have a choice. 00:19:40.34\00:19:42.68 Yes. 00:19:42.71\00:19:44.05 So, Anita, you're a Christian, 00:19:44.08\00:19:48.25 what difference would it make to be able to take these girls 00:19:48.28\00:19:51.49 and put them in a Christian facility 00:19:51.52\00:19:53.96 where they were nurtured and cared for specifically? 00:19:53.99\00:19:58.76 Now, Jean, you're talking about a vision 00:19:58.79\00:20:00.20 that I have for these girls, every girl who's rescued. 00:20:00.23\00:20:05.70 You know, the sense of hopelessness 00:20:05.73\00:20:07.07 inside that place 00:20:07.10\00:20:08.44 when we walk into those brothels 00:20:08.47\00:20:09.80 or when we go into those places 00:20:09.84\00:20:12.37 where they are being forced to hide or to overwork, 00:20:12.41\00:20:17.35 there is just a deep sense of despair 00:20:17.38\00:20:20.82 and a darkness that is so obvious to us. 00:20:20.85\00:20:24.19 And when we get them out of that place, 00:20:24.22\00:20:26.69 what we want to give them to replace that 00:20:26.72\00:20:28.96 is the sense of hope that God cares about them, 00:20:28.99\00:20:32.26 that there is a future that He can build 00:20:32.29\00:20:35.23 and that He can restore 00:20:35.26\00:20:36.60 and that no matter what has happened to them, 00:20:36.63\00:20:39.40 they are still made in the image of God 00:20:39.43\00:20:41.44 and nobody can destroy that 00:20:41.47\00:20:43.74 and nothing can mar that. 00:20:43.77\00:20:47.81 But you see, they've never been told that, 00:20:47.84\00:20:50.48 they've been so abused inside that place 00:20:50.51\00:20:53.75 that they couldn't care about themselves. 00:20:53.78\00:20:56.75 So we, in our home, will have that opportunity 00:20:56.79\00:21:00.92 right from the start to just love all them, 00:21:00.96\00:21:04.26 to be able to give them that sense of hope 00:21:04.29\00:21:08.43 that they need not fear anymore, 00:21:08.46\00:21:10.23 they're not in a place 00:21:10.27\00:21:12.63 that anyone's going to abuse them. 00:21:12.67\00:21:14.64 In fact, they're going to receive the opposite 00:21:14.67\00:21:16.67 that there will be a sense of freedom 00:21:16.71\00:21:18.97 within that place 00:21:19.01\00:21:20.84 where they can make choices 00:21:20.88\00:21:22.81 and that those choices will be guided by good counseling 00:21:22.84\00:21:26.98 and that they will have options 00:21:27.02\00:21:29.42 whether they learn a new trade 00:21:29.45\00:21:30.99 or whether they go back to visit family. 00:21:31.02\00:21:33.86 It will all be under careful observation and supervision 00:21:33.89\00:21:38.59 to ensure that the best happens for these girls. 00:21:38.63\00:21:42.76 I think part of the story 00:21:42.80\00:21:44.63 that you tell that really breaks my heart 00:21:44.67\00:21:47.44 is when you share how these girls 00:21:47.47\00:21:49.74 once they're rescued, 00:21:49.77\00:21:51.11 some of them, a certain percentage of them, 00:21:51.14\00:21:54.18 do go back to that way of life 00:21:54.21\00:21:56.11 because of the shame 00:21:56.14\00:21:57.48 because they don't feel an option. 00:21:57.51\00:22:00.45 Have you seen the difference 00:22:00.48\00:22:03.25 that Christ makes for the girls? 00:22:03.28\00:22:05.45 Is that the difference that keeps them 00:22:05.49\00:22:07.82 from going back to their lifestyle? 00:22:07.86\00:22:10.43 I think it is the main difference. 00:22:10.46\00:22:13.56 Jean, I mean, to be able to pray with the girls 00:22:13.60\00:22:16.26 and we do pray with the girls. 00:22:16.30\00:22:18.17 You know that I told you we get some private time 00:22:18.20\00:22:20.94 either at the police station or at the brothel 00:22:20.97\00:22:22.87 before we take them to the government shelter. 00:22:22.90\00:22:25.54 We almost always talk to them about God and pray with them 00:22:25.57\00:22:29.84 because that's the only private time we'll get 00:22:29.88\00:22:32.81 before we are under supervised visits 00:22:32.85\00:22:36.02 in the government shelter. 00:22:36.05\00:22:37.52 But if we had a home, 00:22:37.55\00:22:39.25 we can pray with them every day, 00:22:39.29\00:22:40.79 we can pray with them and counsel them, 00:22:40.82\00:22:42.72 and tell them about our God who loves them, 00:22:42.76\00:22:45.39 and help them to come to terms with that. 00:22:45.43\00:22:47.30 I mean, many of them ask us, "Why? 00:22:47.33\00:22:50.07 Why do you want to do this for us? 00:22:50.10\00:22:52.13 You know, why would you be here?" 00:22:52.17\00:22:53.60 Because I always tell them, 00:22:53.64\00:22:55.14 I'm a mother myself and I have two daughters, 00:22:55.17\00:22:58.07 I know what it feels like to be inside this place 00:22:58.11\00:23:02.08 wondering what's going to happen next. 00:23:02.11\00:23:04.41 And they always say, "Why do you take this risk?" 00:23:04.45\00:23:07.18 And I tell them, "It's because God has called 00:23:07.22\00:23:10.52 some of us to these things 00:23:10.55\00:23:11.92 and because of God who took the risk for us, 00:23:11.95\00:23:14.96 I mean, that He came for us 00:23:14.99\00:23:16.99 that we might have a life that is free." 00:23:17.03\00:23:19.43 And, you know, they're so open 00:23:19.46\00:23:22.86 to listening to the Gospel, to knowing, 00:23:22.90\00:23:26.23 but the most important thing, Jean, 00:23:26.27\00:23:27.84 is for them to see the Gospel in action, 00:23:27.87\00:23:30.97 and that's what we managed to do that. 00:23:31.01\00:23:33.21 Okay. 00:23:33.24\00:23:34.68 What drives you each and every day 00:23:34.71\00:23:37.21 to continue to put your own life in danger? 00:23:37.25\00:23:41.08 You're on the frontlines doing this, 00:23:41.12\00:23:42.85 and I imagine your husband worries. 00:23:42.88\00:23:45.92 What keeps you going to do this? 00:23:45.95\00:23:50.06 I think the call that God had on my life 00:23:50.09\00:23:53.06 and which I realized about 10 years ago 00:23:53.09\00:23:55.86 when I went out on my first rescue mission, 00:23:55.90\00:23:58.97 and just the thought of these girls out there 00:23:59.00\00:24:04.14 and that, you know, something might happen to them 00:24:04.17\00:24:06.64 that they may never hear about our God who loves them. 00:24:06.68\00:24:10.65 Being an Indian woman myself, a mother of daughters, 00:24:10.68\00:24:15.32 just wanting to do the best that we can for these girls. 00:24:15.35\00:24:20.49 It's funny I never 00:24:20.52\00:24:21.86 was a brave or courageous person growing up. 00:24:21.89\00:24:24.26 In fact, I was very timid. I don't believe it. 00:24:24.29\00:24:26.03 Very timid, very shy. Really? 00:24:26.06\00:24:27.96 Yeah, I hated standing up in front anything but... 00:24:28.00\00:24:32.53 And I still am very afraid before we go on a rescue. 00:24:32.57\00:24:35.30 Everybody knows that I have my private time. 00:24:35.34\00:24:38.47 But when we finish the prayer, 00:24:38.51\00:24:40.61 before the raiding team is out of the door, 00:24:40.64\00:24:45.11 I know that God has gone before us 00:24:45.15\00:24:47.12 and He's already there. 00:24:47.15\00:24:48.72 I mean, there are times, Jean, 00:24:48.75\00:24:50.09 that we search the building for the girls 00:24:50.12\00:24:53.52 and we just don't know where they've hidden them. 00:24:53.56\00:24:56.29 And somehow God shows us where that hidden place is 00:24:56.32\00:25:00.73 whether it's, you know, whether it's a hole in the wall 00:25:00.76\00:25:03.67 that has been sealed up 00:25:03.70\00:25:05.23 and we have to break through that 00:25:05.27\00:25:06.74 or whether it's a hotel reception desk, 00:25:06.77\00:25:11.17 and you open draw and it's a staircase... 00:25:11.21\00:25:13.27 Really? 00:25:13.31\00:25:14.64 Into a cellar where the girls have been pushed. 00:25:14.68\00:25:17.15 It is God because, you know, none of us have had 00:25:17.18\00:25:20.22 any kind of investigative training. 00:25:20.25\00:25:22.48 And when God shows up there, we know that we keep going on. 00:25:22.52\00:25:27.52 He's going before you. Yes. 00:25:27.56\00:25:29.22 And you're trusting in Him. Yes. 00:25:29.26\00:25:31.49 Well, I have a hard time 00:25:31.53\00:25:32.86 imagining you as timid young girl. 00:25:32.89\00:25:35.30 You're a great inspiration to myself 00:25:35.33\00:25:37.97 and many who have met you, I know you are. 00:25:38.00\00:25:41.30 Well, I just praise that you and Operation Child Rescue 00:25:41.34\00:25:45.07 are doing what you're doing, Anita, 00:25:45.11\00:25:47.21 that you are facing these problems 00:25:47.24\00:25:49.21 that you're there dealing with it. 00:25:49.24\00:25:52.48 You know, it's really hard for those of us 00:25:52.51\00:25:54.85 who don't see it with our own eyes 00:25:54.88\00:25:57.29 to really comprehend the level of danger, 00:25:57.32\00:26:02.92 the horrors that these children go through, 00:26:02.96\00:26:05.69 but I just thank you 00:26:05.73\00:26:07.06 for what you're doing for the ministry 00:26:07.10\00:26:09.16 that you have, and I'm just wondering 00:26:09.20\00:26:11.23 if we can pray together. 00:26:11.27\00:26:12.60 Yes, please. Please. 00:26:12.63\00:26:15.27 Dear God in heaven, You see what's happening in India. 00:26:15.30\00:26:18.81 You see into the lives of the young women 00:26:18.84\00:26:22.94 who are vulnerable in the rural areas 00:26:22.98\00:26:24.98 and, Lord, You see the horrors more that we can even imagine. 00:26:25.01\00:26:28.35 But Father, we love You, 00:26:28.38\00:26:30.62 and we know that You created each of us 00:26:30.65\00:26:32.55 and that You love us each individually 00:26:32.59\00:26:34.66 that You created each of us for a purpose. 00:26:34.69\00:26:37.53 Father, I ask that You'll go with Anita and her team 00:26:37.56\00:26:40.13 as they continue to rescue these vulnerable people, 00:26:40.16\00:26:44.43 these children, these young men, 00:26:44.47\00:26:46.30 these young women from the dangers 00:26:46.33\00:26:48.30 that they find themselves in. 00:26:48.34\00:26:49.70 Father, protect them and may Your light, 00:26:49.74\00:26:53.74 Lord, change their lives for eternity. 00:26:53.78\00:26:57.21 Lord, we place Anita and her team in your care, 00:26:57.25\00:27:01.55 we ask for Your grace 00:27:01.58\00:27:02.92 and Your hand over this process, 00:27:02.95\00:27:04.35 in Jesus' name, amen. 00:27:04.39\00:27:07.46 Anita, it's always a pleasure visiting you. 00:27:07.49\00:27:09.86 Thank you. Thank you, Jean. 00:27:09.89\00:27:11.59 Current estimates tell us 00:27:17.20\00:27:18.53 that more than 1.2 million children 00:27:18.57\00:27:21.00 are caught up in human trafficking 00:27:21.04\00:27:22.60 in India alone. 00:27:22.64\00:27:24.07 The numbers are truly staggering. 00:27:24.11\00:27:26.14 But thanks to people like Anita 00:27:26.17\00:27:27.84 and programs like Operation Child Rescue. 00:27:27.88\00:27:30.85 These young girls and boys 00:27:30.88\00:27:32.31 can be rescued and rehabilitated. 00:27:32.35\00:27:34.78 You can play a vital role in helping 00:27:34.82\00:27:36.79 Child Impact International in its rescue efforts. 00:27:36.82\00:27:39.92 Voice of Prophecy has partnered with Child Impact 00:27:39.95\00:27:42.92 to build a rehabilitation home in Bangalore, India, 00:27:42.96\00:27:45.83 to provide a safe place 00:27:45.86\00:27:47.40 where young girls can be given hope, healing, 00:27:47.43\00:27:50.00 and to learn new skills all in a Christian environment. 00:27:50.03\00:27:53.44 Please pray for Anita and her team in India. 00:27:53.47\00:27:56.14 And if you would like to help 00:27:56.17\00:27:57.51 or get more information on Operation Child Rescue, 00:27:57.54\00:28:00.61 please contact Child Impact International. 00:28:00.64\00:28:03.24
