Our television series "Hope in Motion" 00:00:10.61\00:00:13.31 has been a big success, 00:00:13.34\00:00:15.08 and we want to continue to share with you 00:00:15.11\00:00:17.75 some of the field stories 00:00:17.78\00:00:19.55 that we have filmed over the years. 00:00:19.58\00:00:21.85 So just from time to time 00:00:21.88\00:00:23.92 it may refer to Asian Aid 00:00:23.95\00:00:26.19 as we reflect on these great stories 00:00:26.22\00:00:29.26 as we share them with you. 00:00:29.29\00:00:30.69 The medical ministry 00:00:37.37\00:00:38.70 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:00:38.73\00:00:40.40 not only attends to the medical needs, 00:00:40.44\00:00:42.60 but also shows the love of Jesus 00:00:42.64\00:00:44.67 to those who come to its facilities 00:00:44.71\00:00:46.74 seeking medical treatment. 00:00:46.78\00:00:48.68 In this episode of Hope in Motion, 00:00:48.71\00:00:50.81 we go to Giffard Memorial Hospital 00:00:50.85\00:00:52.95 and the College of Nursing in Nuzvid, India, 00:00:52.98\00:00:55.62 and see how Child Impact International 00:00:55.65\00:00:57.75 is helping this pioneering institution 00:00:57.79\00:01:00.16 in training young people in God's service. 00:01:00.19\00:01:02.76 I guess, we traditionally 00:01:02.79\00:01:04.13 think of sponsorship of children 00:01:04.16\00:01:05.86 sitting in a classroom. 00:01:05.89\00:01:07.50 But here, at Giffard Memorial Hospital, 00:01:07.53\00:01:09.93 we see the end result, we see the success of girls, 00:01:09.96\00:01:14.74 especially who are now doing full nursing courses, 00:01:14.77\00:01:18.94 who are making a real contribution 00:01:18.97\00:01:21.28 to the medical work of the church. 00:01:21.31\00:01:23.85 We meet Alice Joseph, 00:01:23.88\00:01:25.28 a gold medal winner from its nursing program 00:01:25.31\00:01:27.92 and see how Child Impact sponsorship 00:01:27.95\00:01:30.12 has helped her achieve this great feat. 00:01:30.15\00:01:32.49 I think it's a great blessing being sponsored, 00:01:32.52\00:01:35.46 I'm thankful for what they did for my life 00:01:35.49\00:01:38.59 for bringing me to the stage, 00:01:38.63\00:01:40.53 and I hope one day 00:01:40.56\00:01:41.90 that I would do something for them. 00:01:41.93\00:01:43.83 Child Impact International is an organization giving hope 00:02:00.45\00:02:04.45 previously called Asian Aid. 00:02:04.49\00:02:06.39 Child Impact International 00:02:06.42\00:02:07.96 is an organization fostering permanent positive change 00:02:07.99\00:02:11.29 in the lives of disadvantaged children and their communities. 00:02:11.33\00:02:15.03 Child Impact is committed 00:02:15.06\00:02:16.50 to making a difference in the lives of other countries. 00:02:24.57\00:02:27.81 For the last 50 years, 00:02:27.84\00:02:29.31 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people 00:02:29.34\00:02:32.31 and their investment is proving infinite returns, 00:02:32.35\00:02:35.22 driven by the dedication 00:02:35.25\00:02:36.69 to helping those who have the least. 00:02:36.72\00:02:38.85 Child Impact is an organization 00:02:38.89\00:02:40.82 focused on the welfare of children, 00:02:40.86\00:02:43.02 implementing diverse development projects 00:02:43.06\00:02:45.49 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:02:45.53\00:02:47.63 Their outreach expands from child rescue operations 00:02:47.66\00:02:50.83 to providing an education for orphans, 00:02:50.87\00:02:53.10 deaf, and the blind children 00:02:53.13\00:02:55.00 giving them a sense of place, a home, 00:02:55.04\00:02:57.91 but above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:02:57.94\00:03:01.84 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:03:01.88\00:03:05.15 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:03:05.18\00:03:07.78 This is Hope in Motion. 00:03:07.82\00:03:09.58 Usha Rani is a second year nursing student 00:03:26.94\00:03:29.34 at the College of Nursing in Nuzvid, India. 00:03:29.37\00:03:32.04 As part of Giffard Memorial Hospital, 00:03:32.07\00:03:34.24 the College of Nursing brings in aspiring nursing students 00:03:34.28\00:03:37.41 from Adventist backgrounds like Usha. 00:03:37.45\00:03:40.25 Child Impact International over the years 00:03:40.28\00:03:42.85 has helped many young women like Usha through sponsorship. 00:03:42.88\00:03:46.59 Because of the Asian Aid 00:03:46.62\00:03:48.72 many, many, many students 00:03:48.76\00:03:51.19 could educate themselves in our college. 00:03:51.23\00:03:54.73 It's a tremendous opportunity for the students to grab that 00:03:54.76\00:04:01.47 and to excel in their studies and then educate themselves 00:04:01.50\00:04:06.71 and then have a bright future. 00:04:06.74\00:04:09.91 Usha Rani is looking forward to this bright future. 00:04:09.94\00:04:13.21 Having born into a poor Adventist family, 00:04:13.25\00:04:15.62 Usha has been supported 00:04:15.65\00:04:17.02 by Child Impact sponsorship program 00:04:17.05\00:04:19.19 from kindergarten. 00:04:19.22\00:04:20.62 She is the youngest of four girls in the family, 00:04:20.66\00:04:23.02 and Usha's parents had to constantly worry 00:04:23.06\00:04:25.49 about their financial instability. 00:04:25.53\00:04:27.40 This led to marital issues between her parents 00:04:27.43\00:04:30.17 and they separated 00:04:30.20\00:04:31.53 when Usha was still a young girl. 00:04:31.57\00:04:33.23 Her mother took care of her 00:04:33.27\00:04:34.60 and her three older sisters 00:04:34.64\00:04:36.00 by selling vegetables in the village. 00:04:36.04\00:04:38.04 Their hardship was compounded 00:04:38.07\00:04:39.74 when her mother was hospitalized 00:04:39.77\00:04:41.34 with jaundice. 00:04:41.38\00:04:43.08 By the time they realized 00:04:43.11\00:04:44.85 that she is suffering from jaundice 00:04:44.88\00:04:46.48 and take her for treatment it became worse. 00:04:46.51\00:04:49.18 They couldn't treat her. 00:04:49.22\00:04:50.85 Doctors said no hope 00:04:50.89\00:04:52.72 and she was like one week in the hospital 00:04:52.75\00:04:56.26 but no improvement in the health status. 00:04:56.29\00:04:59.16 Like that she passed away in the hospital only. 00:04:59.19\00:05:02.46 That time also I was in hostel only, 00:05:02.50\00:05:04.17 I didn't know anything about 00:05:04.20\00:05:05.53 my mother's health condition. 00:05:05.57\00:05:07.90 Then by the time I came here 00:05:07.94\00:05:09.40 she is no more, she passed away. 00:05:09.44\00:05:13.64 When our mother passed away, 00:05:13.68\00:05:15.51 I wanted to bring my husband here 00:05:15.54\00:05:17.65 and take care of my sister 00:05:17.68\00:05:19.45 because she was still very young at that time. 00:05:19.48\00:05:21.88 But my husband was not willing, 00:05:21.92\00:05:23.82 he said, "When your father is not taking care of you all, 00:05:23.85\00:05:26.96 why should I take care of her?" 00:05:26.99\00:05:28.72 So my husband left me 00:05:28.76\00:05:30.23 and I came here to take care of them. 00:05:30.26\00:05:34.53 Usha's mother died five years ago 00:05:34.56\00:05:36.70 and legal requirements forced her father 00:05:36.73\00:05:38.90 to be her guardian. 00:05:38.93\00:05:40.84 After my mother died 00:05:40.87\00:05:43.07 it's compulsory I should stay with my father 00:05:43.10\00:05:45.67 because no source for me. 00:05:45.71\00:05:47.58 Nobody used to take care of us 00:05:47.61\00:05:48.94 because already my three sisters, 00:05:48.98\00:05:50.68 they got married. 00:05:50.71\00:05:52.05 They went to stay with their husbands. 00:05:52.08\00:05:54.42 After that when I was staying with my father, 00:05:54.45\00:05:57.79 he also became sick because he also become old, 00:05:57.82\00:06:02.39 he couldn't work. 00:06:02.42\00:06:03.76 He is diabetic patient. 00:06:03.79\00:06:05.66 Then due to some family problems 00:06:05.69\00:06:09.56 my elder sister... 00:06:09.60\00:06:10.93 she had some problem with her husband. 00:06:10.97\00:06:13.77 She came home 00:06:13.80\00:06:15.14 and now she is taking care of my father and me. 00:06:15.17\00:06:18.01 Poverty passes on from generation to generation. 00:06:24.25\00:06:27.62 Without any education, 00:06:27.65\00:06:29.05 people in rural India 00:06:29.08\00:06:30.42 are forced to follow their parents 00:06:30.45\00:06:32.09 into working in the fields or doing manual labor, 00:06:32.12\00:06:35.09 sometimes as domestic help. 00:06:35.12\00:06:37.33 Usha's father, although old and diabetic, 00:06:37.36\00:06:39.93 is forced to work in the fields nearby 00:06:39.96\00:06:42.33 just so he can earn something to support himself 00:06:42.36\00:06:45.00 and his eldest daughter who is caring for him. 00:06:45.03\00:06:47.27 Usha's sister, Rathnakumari 00:06:52.81\00:06:54.74 owns a petty shop selling vegetables. 00:06:54.78\00:06:57.45 Fortunately for Usha, she has the opportunity 00:06:57.48\00:07:00.12 to break the shackles of poverty. 00:07:00.15\00:07:02.22 Child Impact sponsorship has given her 00:07:02.25\00:07:04.35 that opportunity to uplift herself 00:07:04.39\00:07:06.76 and help her support her family in the future. 00:07:06.79\00:07:09.62 If you help the family, 00:07:09.66\00:07:11.39 that help may not be for longer time. 00:07:11.43\00:07:14.03 But if you help a child in a family 00:07:14.06\00:07:16.80 and educate the child 00:07:16.83\00:07:18.17 and that child when he gets into job, 00:07:18.20\00:07:20.40 he can take care of the entire family 00:07:20.44\00:07:22.47 and it can be a big blessing to the entire family. 00:07:22.50\00:07:25.41 So therefore, Seventh-day Adventist, 00:07:25.44\00:07:27.88 wherever we have our colleges, wherever we have a school, 00:07:27.91\00:07:31.01 wherever we have our hospitals, 00:07:31.05\00:07:32.65 we take it like a privilege to invite students 00:07:32.68\00:07:35.85 from all backgrounds and to educate them 00:07:35.88\00:07:38.79 so that they would become workers, 00:07:38.82\00:07:43.36 come back to our institutions and serve in our institutions. 00:07:43.39\00:07:47.73 So what we do, 00:07:47.76\00:07:49.10 it will not go waste 00:07:49.13\00:07:50.57 but they will come back 00:07:50.60\00:07:52.10 and then help taking care of responsibilities, 00:07:52.13\00:07:55.17 taking care of various jobs that we entrust to them. 00:07:55.20\00:07:59.47 I would say if there is no sponsorship, 00:07:59.51\00:08:01.98 I think majority of them 00:08:02.01\00:08:03.61 will not be having this education 00:08:03.65\00:08:05.11 that they are actually going through. 00:08:05.15\00:08:06.88 And if you actually take the financial background 00:08:06.92\00:08:09.75 of many of our students, 00:08:09.78\00:08:11.12 they come from very poor backgrounds. 00:08:11.15\00:08:13.25 And some of them have a really pathetic background, 00:08:13.29\00:08:16.79 and this sponsorship 00:08:16.83\00:08:18.19 that they are getting from very kind donors, 00:08:18.23\00:08:21.33 I mean, God has, I pray that God will bless them 00:08:21.36\00:08:24.17 because they're really doing a lot of services. 00:08:24.20\00:08:26.57 And by helping these poor students 00:08:26.60\00:08:29.74 in getting some education, 00:08:29.77\00:08:31.11 they are really going a long way 00:08:31.14\00:08:33.04 to build a bright future for these students. 00:08:33.07\00:08:35.18 Without this sponsorship, 00:08:35.21\00:08:36.54 I'm sure they will not be able to get this education 00:08:36.58\00:08:39.21 and they will not be able to do 00:08:39.25\00:08:41.55 what they're doing and their future we do not know 00:08:41.58\00:08:43.59 what it could be given the financial conditions 00:08:43.62\00:08:45.89 from which they've come. 00:08:45.92\00:08:47.26 So I really pray, 00:08:47.29\00:08:48.62 we always remember these sponsors 00:08:48.66\00:08:50.13 because we do not know 00:08:50.16\00:08:51.49 whether they have seen these children or not, 00:08:51.53\00:08:53.40 but the kindness, 00:08:53.43\00:08:55.13 they've been helping our students, 00:08:55.16\00:08:56.50 and we really appreciate them, 00:08:56.53\00:08:58.00 and we pray that God will bless those sponsors 00:08:58.03\00:09:00.40 who have been helping our students. 00:09:00.44\00:09:03.71 I wouldn't have got that sponsorship 00:09:03.74\00:09:05.71 from Asian Aid, 00:09:05.74\00:09:07.24 definitely, I'm not sure 00:09:07.28\00:09:08.98 that I would have studied in such Adventist institutions. 00:09:09.01\00:09:13.42 Sponsorship is like 00:09:13.45\00:09:14.95 they are supporting me financially. 00:09:14.98\00:09:17.39 Everything they are giving books and all... 00:09:17.42\00:09:19.82 From LKG I was supported by Asian Aid help. 00:09:19.85\00:09:24.63 Usha Rani has gone through 00:09:24.66\00:09:26.06 Child Impact sponsorship program 00:09:26.09\00:09:27.93 since kindergarten, 00:09:27.96\00:09:29.30 and it is continuing to support Usha 00:09:29.33\00:09:31.20 through her nursing program 00:09:31.23\00:09:32.57 at the College of Nursing in Nuzvid. 00:09:32.60\00:09:35.30 Nurses are in high demand, and no doubt, 00:09:35.34\00:09:37.64 Usha would be employed almost immediately 00:09:37.67\00:09:40.04 upon her completing her nursing program. 00:09:40.08\00:09:42.64 Thanks to Child Impact sponsorship, 00:09:42.68\00:09:44.91 she will not only stand on her own 00:09:44.95\00:09:46.55 as a working professional, 00:09:46.58\00:09:48.08 but also be a service to her family, 00:09:48.12\00:09:50.35 and above all, to the community as a whole. 00:09:50.39\00:09:54.12 I guess we traditionally think 00:09:54.16\00:09:55.69 of sponsorship of children sitting in a classroom. 00:09:55.72\00:09:58.79 But here at Giffard Memorial hospital, 00:09:58.83\00:10:01.36 we see the end result, we see the success of girls, 00:10:01.40\00:10:06.10 especially who are now doing full nursing courses, 00:10:06.13\00:10:10.31 who are making a real contribution 00:10:10.34\00:10:12.67 to the medical work of the church, 00:10:12.71\00:10:14.74 even to community hospitals. 00:10:14.78\00:10:16.68 My father cannot support us 00:10:20.42\00:10:22.88 and we don't have any brothers to support us. 00:10:22.92\00:10:26.25 I'm so thankful to Asian Aid and my sister's sponsors. 00:10:26.29\00:10:31.06 If Asian Aid is not there, 00:10:31.09\00:10:32.99 I would not make her to study this much. 00:10:33.03\00:10:35.63 We would have gotten her married 00:10:35.66\00:10:37.33 in the village and she may be doing 00:10:37.37\00:10:39.07 some manual labor in the fields. 00:10:39.10\00:10:41.87 Because of Asian Aid, 00:10:41.90\00:10:43.24 my sister is able to receive an education, 00:10:43.27\00:10:46.14 and I want to thank the sponsor. 00:10:46.17\00:10:48.84 These are people who do not know us, 00:10:48.88\00:10:51.18 they have not met us 00:10:51.21\00:10:52.55 and we have not seen them 00:10:52.58\00:10:54.35 but still they are sponsoring my sister. 00:10:54.38\00:10:57.15 I'm able to give my emotional support to her 00:10:57.19\00:11:00.16 only because of these sponsors. 00:11:00.19\00:11:02.29 I'm praying for them, 00:11:02.32\00:11:03.73 I pray that God will prosper them 00:11:03.76\00:11:05.56 and give them good health. 00:11:05.59\00:11:07.36 I thank them with all my heart. 00:11:07.40\00:11:09.16 The healing ministry 00:11:12.80\00:11:14.14 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:11:14.17\00:11:15.64 is in the forefront of its mission 00:11:15.67\00:11:17.31 to spread the good news and the love of Jesus 00:11:17.34\00:11:20.11 through its clinics and hospitals. 00:11:20.14\00:11:22.01 At Giffard Memorial, 00:11:22.04\00:11:23.38 young people are being trained in God's service. 00:11:23.41\00:11:26.18 And at School of Nursing, 00:11:26.21\00:11:27.58 they are not only trained to give manual nursing care, 00:11:27.62\00:11:30.45 but also show Christian love 00:11:30.49\00:11:32.59 and to share God's love 00:11:32.62\00:11:33.96 with those who come seeking medical help. 00:11:33.99\00:11:36.42 When we come back, 00:11:36.46\00:11:37.79 we look at how Child Impact is helping 00:11:37.83\00:11:39.59 this pioneering institution 00:11:39.63\00:11:41.43 in training young people in this healing ministry. 00:11:41.46\00:11:44.07 And meet Alice 00:11:44.10\00:11:45.43 and see how Child Impact's sponsorship 00:11:45.47\00:11:47.60 has helped her bring laurels to her sponsors, 00:11:47.64\00:11:50.01 her home, and her school. 00:11:50.04\00:11:52.84 I think it's a great blessing being sponsored. 00:11:52.87\00:11:55.68 I'm thankful for what they did for my life, 00:11:55.71\00:11:58.91 for bringing me to the stage. 00:11:58.95\00:12:00.82 And I hope one day 00:12:00.85\00:12:02.18 that I would do something for them. 00:12:02.22\00:12:04.09 A couple of years ago, 00:12:12.56\00:12:13.90 my daughters and I had 00:12:13.93\00:12:15.26 a wonderful opportunity to travel to India. 00:12:15.30\00:12:17.90 And while we were there, 00:12:17.93\00:12:19.27 we met yet another part of our family, 00:12:19.30\00:12:21.20 that's our sponsor daughter Sheila. 00:12:21.24\00:12:23.61 We've had the privilege of sponsoring Sheila 00:12:23.64\00:12:25.71 through Child Impact International 00:12:25.74\00:12:27.54 for more than three years now. 00:12:27.58\00:12:29.98 And, you know, while we were there, 00:12:30.01\00:12:31.51 she shared with us 00:12:31.55\00:12:33.01 that her dream was to become a nurse. 00:12:33.05\00:12:36.12 Now, it's a wonderful privilege for us as a family 00:12:36.15\00:12:39.69 to know that she is fulfilling that dream. 00:12:39.72\00:12:42.62 Sheila is now studying to be a nurse. 00:12:42.66\00:12:45.73 She's in college 00:12:45.76\00:12:47.10 and we could not be happier for her. 00:12:47.13\00:12:49.06 It's been wonderful to be part of that journey with her. 00:12:49.10\00:12:52.63 And, you know, sponsoring a child 00:12:52.67\00:12:54.44 through Child Impact, 00:12:54.47\00:12:55.84 it's made an incredible difference 00:12:55.87\00:12:57.57 for our family. 00:12:57.61\00:12:58.94 And I know that for you, 00:12:58.97\00:13:00.48 sponsoring a child can make a difference for you too. 00:13:00.51\00:13:03.51 But most importantly, 00:13:03.55\00:13:04.88 it can make the difference 00:13:04.91\00:13:06.25 in the life of a child every day. 00:13:06.28\00:13:08.42 At Adventist mission schools 00:13:17.69\00:13:19.26 like this one in Bangladesh, 00:13:19.29\00:13:21.16 Child Impact International sponsors 00:13:21.20\00:13:23.37 hundreds of children. 00:13:23.40\00:13:24.97 We often think that sponsorship 00:13:25.00\00:13:27.27 only impacts on the life of the child, 00:13:27.30\00:13:29.94 but it's much wider than that. 00:13:29.97\00:13:31.81 It impacts on the parents and on the community. 00:13:31.84\00:13:35.38 But more important, it impacts on the school. 00:13:35.41\00:13:38.65 It becomes valuable income for the school, 00:13:38.68\00:13:41.82 and then in turn, 00:13:41.85\00:13:43.18 it impacts on hundreds of other children. 00:13:43.22\00:13:45.72 I just ask that you would consider 00:13:45.75\00:13:47.86 sponsoring a child with Child Impact 00:13:47.89\00:13:50.39 or supporting one of its valuable projects 00:13:50.43\00:13:53.19 that will improve education and Adventist mission schools 00:13:53.23\00:13:57.10 like this one and right here. 00:13:57.13\00:13:58.63 Giffard Memorial Hospital in Nuzvid 00:14:23.73\00:14:25.86 is an Adventist Hospital established in 1935, 00:14:25.89\00:14:29.30 and has spearheaded 00:14:29.33\00:14:30.67 and served the medical needs of communities 00:14:30.70\00:14:32.77 in and around Nuzvid. 00:14:32.80\00:14:34.57 In its 80 year history, 00:14:34.60\00:14:36.10 the hospital has treated thousands of people 00:14:36.14\00:14:38.57 who often come from poor villages 00:14:38.61\00:14:40.54 with problems ranging from common illness to snakebites. 00:14:40.58\00:14:44.41 Along with the medical center, 00:14:44.45\00:14:46.01 Giffard Memorial has also been instrumental 00:14:46.05\00:14:48.42 in taking the mission 00:14:48.45\00:14:49.78 and the good news of the church to people around Nuzvid. 00:14:49.82\00:14:53.42 Because of this hospital 00:14:53.46\00:14:55.96 more than 50 churches 00:14:55.99\00:14:58.29 were established in and around Nuzvid. 00:14:58.33\00:15:02.90 And each church is doing so good. 00:15:02.93\00:15:05.37 From those churches we get the students. 00:15:05.40\00:15:07.64 Here they do their general nursing program 00:15:07.67\00:15:09.47 and BSc nursing program. 00:15:09.50\00:15:11.17 We are hoping to start MSc nursing program. 00:15:11.21\00:15:13.54 That means from LKG until PG course 00:15:13.58\00:15:17.81 they can complete their studies here. 00:15:17.85\00:15:19.61 What a blessing that would be! 00:15:19.65\00:15:23.08 Recently, Giffard Memorial Hospital branched out 00:15:23.12\00:15:25.89 to start a nursing program 00:15:25.92\00:15:27.52 primarily for students from Adventist backgrounds 00:15:27.56\00:15:30.43 who wish for a career in nursing. 00:15:30.46\00:15:32.56 Last year, the College of Nursing 00:15:32.59\00:15:34.36 was privileged to send out its first batch of graduates. 00:15:34.40\00:15:37.73 It was a proud moment for the college 00:15:37.77\00:15:39.63 as they had a 100% passing result. 00:15:39.67\00:15:42.90 I know, as a principal, I found it quite challenging. 00:15:42.94\00:15:45.41 It was the first batch of students 00:15:45.44\00:15:47.14 and we had a lot of difficulties also, 00:15:47.18\00:15:50.31 but the good Lord was there with us 00:15:50.35\00:15:52.31 and we put in all our efforts to see 00:15:52.35\00:15:55.35 that our students could get the best. 00:15:55.38\00:15:57.49 With God's help, 00:15:57.52\00:15:58.85 we got quite a few distinctions 00:15:58.89\00:16:01.32 and we had 100% pass results 00:16:01.36\00:16:03.59 from the first batch of students. 00:16:03.63\00:16:05.23 And we were really excited about it, 00:16:05.26\00:16:07.30 and we thank God for all these blessings 00:16:07.33\00:16:09.76 and the way He has led us marvelously. 00:16:09.80\00:16:13.84 Although a majority of the students 00:16:13.87\00:16:15.54 in the College of Nursing come from Adventist families, 00:16:15.57\00:16:18.47 many cannot afford a college education. 00:16:18.51\00:16:20.84 They come from small towns and villages like Usha Rani. 00:16:20.88\00:16:24.28 This is where Child Impact 00:16:24.31\00:16:25.78 plays a crucial role in providing 00:16:25.81\00:16:27.75 the means necessary for these aspiring students 00:16:27.78\00:16:30.62 through its sponsorship program. 00:16:30.65\00:16:32.95 I visited a lot of different medical facilities in the US, 00:16:32.99\00:16:37.09 so it's a real privilege and very exciting for me 00:16:37.13\00:16:38.96 to come here to this hospital here in India 00:16:38.99\00:16:41.16 where students are being trained 00:16:41.20\00:16:42.66 and are being able to work and serve the community. 00:16:42.70\00:16:46.27 As a sponsorship manager in the US, 00:16:46.30\00:16:49.20 I see it from one angle. 00:16:49.24\00:16:50.71 And, now you see the students as they grow 00:16:50.74\00:16:52.97 and then to come here, 00:16:53.01\00:16:54.34 and everywhere you go 00:16:54.38\00:16:55.71 it's someone who has grown up through the Asian Aid system 00:16:55.74\00:16:58.85 who is now serving the community as a nurse. 00:16:58.88\00:17:01.15 And what a privilege and what an opportunity 00:17:01.18\00:17:03.05 it is for them to serve patients 00:17:03.08\00:17:05.55 when they're vulnerable to share Jesus with them 00:17:05.59\00:17:08.19 in this life of service. 00:17:08.22\00:17:11.53 Alice Joseph joined the nursing staff 00:17:11.56\00:17:13.60 at Giffard Memorial last year. 00:17:13.63\00:17:15.63 She was part of the first batch of the graduating class 00:17:15.66\00:17:18.63 and was sponsored by Child Impact 00:17:18.67\00:17:20.54 through her nursing program. 00:17:20.57\00:17:22.40 Last year she brought laurels to the institution 00:17:22.44\00:17:25.17 by winning a gold medal at her graduation. 00:17:25.21\00:17:28.81 Like I just wanted, 00:17:28.84\00:17:30.18 this was like one time accomplishment. 00:17:30.21\00:17:33.21 So I just wanted the first mark 00:17:33.25\00:17:37.09 but I didn't think of the gold medal. 00:17:37.12\00:17:39.22 And by God's grace I got it. 00:17:39.25\00:17:41.62 And one thing 00:17:41.66\00:17:43.89 that made me happy for getting us 00:17:43.93\00:17:46.33 from where I came, for them the good name, 00:17:46.36\00:17:48.66 that is from Sunshine and the Asian Aid. 00:17:48.70\00:17:51.03 I just felt happy for that, 00:17:51.07\00:17:52.67 even I didn't tell my mom that I got gold medal. 00:17:52.70\00:17:55.67 But first, I told Beulah Aunty. 00:17:55.70\00:17:58.04 And I could see that smile on her face 00:17:58.07\00:18:00.51 and she was happy like, at least from Sunshine, 00:18:00.54\00:18:03.78 you are the one who got it, so I'm happy for that. 00:18:03.81\00:18:08.88 I was very proud. 00:18:08.92\00:18:10.49 I know I'm so proud that Alice has made it 00:18:10.52\00:18:16.59 and even Ashwini, the girl who is from Sunshine 00:18:16.62\00:18:21.43 who studied with her, she got a distinction. 00:18:21.46\00:18:24.27 And both these children have always 00:18:24.30\00:18:28.50 excelled in their studies right from grade one. 00:18:28.54\00:18:32.51 And to see that they kept that constantly 00:18:32.54\00:18:35.38 and try to do their best even at the college level, 00:18:35.41\00:18:39.45 it made me really proud 00:18:39.48\00:18:41.48 to be able to be there and witness that 00:18:41.52\00:18:43.89 and be part of that celebration. 00:18:43.92\00:18:45.62 Alice grew up at Sunshine home in Bangalore, 00:18:55.83\00:18:58.33 and she has fond memories of the place she calls home. 00:18:58.37\00:19:02.90 It's like a family over there, 00:19:02.94\00:19:04.67 and lots of children we can play around. 00:19:04.71\00:19:08.18 And we have, like we feel that we have someone beside us. 00:19:08.21\00:19:12.95 We never feel lonely 00:19:12.98\00:19:14.68 because we had all the children around us. 00:19:14.72\00:19:17.19 So I cherish this moment 00:19:17.22\00:19:19.05 because right now, we don't get time 00:19:19.09\00:19:21.86 even to spend time with the children, 00:19:21.89\00:19:23.89 so I miss that one a lot. 00:19:23.93\00:19:27.86 Their mother brought Alice and her twin sister Angela 00:19:27.90\00:19:30.57 to Sunshine home 00:19:30.60\00:19:31.93 when they were just five years old 00:19:31.97\00:19:33.47 after their father abandoned them. 00:19:33.50\00:19:36.37 The father left, 00:19:36.40\00:19:37.84 abandoned the family 00:19:37.87\00:19:39.21 and the mother had to become the breadwinner. 00:19:39.24\00:19:43.45 And she couldn't go for the job 00:19:43.48\00:19:45.08 because she had these two little girls, 00:19:45.11\00:19:47.45 and she was desperate to find a solution. 00:19:47.48\00:19:51.59 And someone told her about Sunshine, 00:19:51.62\00:19:53.86 and so she came and asked 00:19:53.89\00:19:56.22 if we could take the children in. 00:19:56.26\00:19:58.73 And looking at her desperate condition, 00:19:58.76\00:20:01.53 we did take the children in so that she could survive. 00:20:01.56\00:20:06.13 Bringing her two young girls to Sunshine 00:20:06.17\00:20:08.30 was hard for her, 00:20:08.34\00:20:09.67 but she had to do it for their survival 00:20:09.70\00:20:11.51 and that of her own. 00:20:11.54\00:20:12.87 Most often in an abandoned situation, 00:20:12.91\00:20:15.34 the child will not be able to get the basic requirement 00:20:15.38\00:20:18.28 such as a decent meal a day. 00:20:18.31\00:20:20.62 And in cases 00:20:20.65\00:20:21.98 where the mother is unable to work, 00:20:22.02\00:20:23.35 both the mother and children will eventually face hardship 00:20:23.39\00:20:26.25 beyond their control, leading even to their death. 00:20:26.29\00:20:30.29 In Alice's case, 00:20:30.33\00:20:31.66 her mother had to make a sacrifice 00:20:31.69\00:20:33.06 to give up her children, 00:20:33.09\00:20:34.53 to put them in a home 00:20:34.56\00:20:35.90 so that at least her children had a future 00:20:35.93\00:20:38.17 and she could be free to find a job 00:20:38.20\00:20:40.00 just to survive. 00:20:40.04\00:20:41.67 Sunshine did give them a good future, 00:20:41.70\00:20:43.97 and thanks to Child Impact sponsorship, 00:20:44.01\00:20:46.44 Alice and her sister were able to go to school 00:20:46.47\00:20:49.04 and be educated. 00:20:49.08\00:20:50.51 The love and care they received at Sunshine 00:20:50.55\00:20:52.81 has had a huge influence on them. 00:20:52.85\00:20:55.88 Basically, any child that comes into our home 00:20:55.92\00:21:00.22 is one more added member to the family. 00:21:00.26\00:21:03.12 And the children bond so easily and so fast, 00:21:03.16\00:21:08.16 and it's a lifelong bond. 00:21:08.20\00:21:10.20 And they sense that they belong to a family, 00:21:10.23\00:21:12.57 it's something bigger. 00:21:12.60\00:21:14.27 And I'm sure 00:21:14.30\00:21:16.71 each of our children are proud to be part of Sunshine. 00:21:16.74\00:21:21.74 The children are indeed proud to be part of Sunshine. 00:21:21.78\00:21:25.05 In fact, for a majority of them, 00:21:25.08\00:21:26.92 Sunshine is the only home they have known. 00:21:26.95\00:21:29.55 And Alice owes her success to becoming a nurse 00:21:29.58\00:21:32.25 to Sunshine home. 00:21:32.29\00:21:33.62 First, I decided I wanted to become a teacher, 00:21:33.66\00:21:37.03 like when we write letters and all, 00:21:37.06\00:21:38.86 that was my desire. 00:21:38.89\00:21:40.23 Then as I grew up, 00:21:40.26\00:21:41.60 I used to see 00:21:41.63\00:21:42.96 so many of our sisters in Sunshine, 00:21:43.00\00:21:45.33 like nurses with that white uniform, 00:21:45.37\00:21:47.67 giving injections and all. 00:21:47.70\00:21:49.70 So I had that desire 00:21:49.74\00:21:51.14 that I should also become a nurse. 00:21:51.17\00:21:55.04 We've had about 35 girls who are nurses. 00:21:55.08\00:21:59.18 I think, initially, 00:21:59.21\00:22:00.78 the girls who finished nursing 00:22:00.82\00:22:03.79 were role models for these girls. 00:22:03.82\00:22:05.92 And everyone looked up to them 00:22:05.95\00:22:07.66 and decided they want to do exactly 00:22:07.69\00:22:10.06 what the older ones did. 00:22:10.09\00:22:12.76 And they have the ability and the opportunity 00:22:12.79\00:22:17.63 to be of service to people and they enjoy it. 00:22:17.67\00:22:22.27 Because being at Sunshine 00:22:22.30\00:22:23.64 is not just looking after themselves, 00:22:23.67\00:22:25.47 each one of them has had 00:22:25.51\00:22:27.34 responsibility of the little one, 00:22:27.38\00:22:29.18 to look after the little ones, 00:22:29.21\00:22:30.71 and they developed leadership skills 00:22:30.75\00:22:34.48 and skills in serving others, so that's what they like to do. 00:22:34.52\00:22:39.99 The desire to excel in her studies and in life 00:22:40.02\00:22:42.79 grew out of her experience at Sunshine. 00:22:42.82\00:22:45.23 And with Child Impact's help, 00:22:45.26\00:22:46.96 she grabbed all the opportunity 00:22:47.00\00:22:48.53 that came her way to become a successful nurse. 00:22:48.56\00:22:51.90 The way the child is born is not important, 00:22:51.93\00:22:57.07 to which family the child belongs, 00:22:57.11\00:22:59.47 that's also not important, but the way the child studies, 00:22:59.51\00:23:04.61 the environment makes an ocean of difference. 00:23:04.65\00:23:07.98 And then everybody would get the opportunities. 00:23:08.02\00:23:12.19 Some take it very easy, some take it very seriously, 00:23:12.22\00:23:16.19 but in this case Miss Alice took it very seriously 00:23:16.22\00:23:19.73 and grabbed all the opportunities 00:23:19.76\00:23:22.06 and could excel in her studies 00:23:22.10\00:23:23.93 and that makes us very, very happy. 00:23:23.97\00:23:25.53 I'm sure the sponsors 00:23:25.57\00:23:27.84 who have been supporting her would be also very happy. 00:23:27.87\00:23:30.31 I'm sure the Asian Aid Australia, 00:23:30.34\00:23:34.64 Asian Aid USA 00:23:34.68\00:23:36.38 sponsors also will be very happy about it. 00:23:36.41\00:23:40.75 Alice is a shining example of why Asian Aid 00:23:40.78\00:23:43.65 wants to continue growing its program. 00:23:43.69\00:23:46.45 We're giving children a chance, 00:23:46.49\00:23:48.56 they can come from the very simple background 00:23:48.59\00:23:52.26 and we can give them a chance 00:23:52.29\00:23:53.76 or the education to the highest level. 00:23:53.80\00:23:56.56 Alice is a shining example of the success of sponsorship 00:23:56.60\00:24:00.47 from where she has come 00:24:00.50\00:24:01.84 to top of the class at Giffard Memorial Hospital. 00:24:01.87\00:24:04.91 It really encourages Asian Aid with its growth strategy, 00:24:04.94\00:24:08.88 and it encourages us to tell sponsors 00:24:08.91\00:24:12.05 that we make a real difference in the life of these children. 00:24:12.08\00:24:16.79 The sponsors do make a real difference 00:24:16.82\00:24:18.92 in the life of these children. 00:24:18.95\00:24:20.66 Being a sponsor is not easy 00:24:20.69\00:24:22.26 for a majority of Child Impact sponsors. 00:24:22.29\00:24:24.79 It's years of sponsoring a child 00:24:24.83\00:24:26.49 from kindergarten right up to college. 00:24:26.53\00:24:28.76 And seeing that the child is using that opportunity, 00:24:28.80\00:24:31.60 and using that money the sponsors have sent 00:24:31.63\00:24:33.94 to the best of their ability is a rewarding experience. 00:24:33.97\00:24:37.51 And when sponsored children 00:24:37.54\00:24:38.87 like Alice excel in their studies, 00:24:38.91\00:24:40.78 they vindicate the belief 00:24:40.81\00:24:42.14 that sponsors have in the sponsorship program. 00:24:42.18\00:24:45.58 Being sponsored is a privilege 00:24:45.61\00:24:48.05 because if I have to look back and see that, 00:24:48.08\00:24:52.15 if I was not in Sunshine 00:24:52.19\00:24:54.26 or if I was not sponsored, 00:24:54.29\00:24:56.36 I don't think I would have completed my nursing also 00:24:56.39\00:24:59.33 because my parents couldn't afford also. 00:24:59.36\00:25:01.53 And I think it's a great blessing 00:25:01.56\00:25:04.00 being sponsored 00:25:04.03\00:25:05.37 and I'm thankful for what they did for my life, 00:25:05.40\00:25:08.70 for bringing me to this stage. 00:25:08.74\00:25:10.64 And I hope one day 00:25:10.67\00:25:12.01 that I would do something for them. 00:25:12.04\00:25:15.94 The ultimate goal of our school system, 00:25:15.98\00:25:18.01 children's homes, and our hospitals 00:25:18.05\00:25:20.12 is to spread the love of Jesus 00:25:20.15\00:25:21.88 and the promise of eternal life to people around us. 00:25:21.92\00:25:24.89 And Child Impact International sponsored students 00:25:24.92\00:25:27.69 like Usha Rani and Alice are shining examples 00:25:27.72\00:25:30.59 of the miracles God has promised for His children. 00:25:30.63\00:25:33.70 They have not only accepted Jesus 00:25:33.73\00:25:35.53 as their personal Savior 00:25:35.56\00:25:36.93 but are in the mission to tell others 00:25:36.97\00:25:38.70 about the promise of eternal life. 00:25:38.73\00:25:41.50 I think it's a tremendous influence 00:25:41.54\00:25:44.11 that homes like Sunshine, and educational institutions, 00:25:44.14\00:25:48.84 and sponsorship agencies like Asian Aid 00:25:48.88\00:25:52.41 have in directing a child's life 00:25:52.45\00:25:57.95 from what could have been 00:25:57.99\00:26:00.02 to what has been has made such a difference. 00:26:00.06\00:26:03.83 And I think, just looking at the, 00:26:03.86\00:26:07.30 you know, the potentiality of a child 00:26:07.33\00:26:09.66 when they come here when they are small 00:26:09.70\00:26:11.60 and seeing through that potentiality 00:26:11.63\00:26:13.97 and making that a possibility 00:26:14.00\00:26:17.01 makes a world of difference. 00:26:17.04\00:26:18.41
