Our television series, 00:00:10.61\00:00:12.04 Hope In Motion has been a big success. 00:00:12.07\00:00:15.14 And we want to continue to share with you 00:00:15.18\00:00:17.78 some of the field stories 00:00:17.81\00:00:19.61 that we have filmed over the years. 00:00:19.65\00:00:21.92 So just from time to time, it may refer to Asian Aid, 00:00:21.95\00:00:26.22 as we reflect on these great stories 00:00:26.25\00:00:29.29 as we share them with you. 00:00:29.32\00:00:31.03 In this landlocked Himalayan state, 00:00:39.57\00:00:41.87 over half a million women are living in pain. 00:00:41.90\00:00:44.94 I remember one lady, she told us that 00:00:44.97\00:00:46.88 she had been walking around with this prolapse 00:00:46.91\00:00:49.31 hanging out of her body for 50 years. 00:00:49.34\00:00:52.61 In today's episode of Hope In Motion, 00:00:52.65\00:00:54.78 we look at how Child Impact International 00:00:54.82\00:00:57.09 is supporting the healing ministry 00:00:57.12\00:00:58.82 of the church in Nepal. 00:00:58.85\00:01:00.42 We visit Scheer Memorial Hospital, 00:01:00.46\00:01:02.39 an Adventist mission, 00:01:02.42\00:01:03.76 that is providing healthcare to women 00:01:03.79\00:01:05.39 suffering from uterine prolapse. 00:01:05.43\00:01:07.86 Well, we're pioneering with Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:01:07.90\00:01:10.63 because we truly believe 00:01:10.67\00:01:12.27 they're doing a wonderful job in the community. 00:01:12.30\00:01:15.67 And meet women whose lives have been changed 00:01:15.70\00:01:18.11 because of Child Impact's involvement in Nepal. 00:01:18.14\00:01:20.94 Child Impact International is an organization giving hope, 00:01:36.49\00:01:40.43 previously called Asian Aid. 00:01:40.46\00:01:42.36 Child Impact International 00:01:42.40\00:01:43.93 is an organization fostering permanent positive change 00:01:43.97\00:01:47.34 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:01:47.37\00:01:49.40 and their communities. 00:01:49.44\00:01:50.97 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:01:51.01\00:01:53.58 in the lives of children and those who are in need. 00:01:53.61\00:01:56.38 Serving communities in India, 00:01:56.41\00:01:57.98 Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, 00:01:58.01\00:02:01.38 and will soon expand to other countries. 00:02:01.42\00:02:03.82 For the last 50 years, 00:02:03.85\00:02:05.29 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people 00:02:05.32\00:02:08.26 and their investment is proving infinite returns, 00:02:08.29\00:02:11.16 driven by the dedication to helping those 00:02:11.19\00:02:13.53 who have the least. 00:02:13.56\00:02:14.90 Child Impact is an organization 00:02:14.93\00:02:16.87 focused on the welfare of children, 00:02:16.90\00:02:18.97 implementing diverse development projects 00:02:19.00\00:02:21.50 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:02:21.54\00:02:23.67 Their outreach expands from child rescue operations, 00:02:23.71\00:02:26.71 to providing an education 00:02:26.74\00:02:28.24 for orphans, deaf, and the blind children 00:02:28.28\00:02:30.98 giving them a sense of place, a home, 00:02:31.01\00:02:33.85 but above all, 00:02:33.88\00:02:35.22 Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:02:35.25\00:02:37.75 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:02:37.79\00:02:41.06 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:02:41.09\00:02:43.79 This is Hope in Motion. 00:02:43.83\00:02:45.83 Nepal is renowned 00:03:01.44\00:03:02.78 for its natural beauty and enduring culture. 00:03:02.81\00:03:05.28 Having existed as early as its neighbors India and China, 00:03:05.31\00:03:08.98 Nepal has kept its cultural heritage intact, 00:03:09.02\00:03:12.02 offering an extraordinary travel experience 00:03:12.05\00:03:14.42 for a visitor. 00:03:14.46\00:03:15.79 With 8 of the 10 highest mountain peaks in the world 00:03:19.29\00:03:22.13 including Mount Everest, 00:03:22.16\00:03:23.53 Nepal's landscape is truly inspiring. 00:03:23.57\00:03:26.20 Nepal is also one of the poorest countries in the world 00:03:26.23\00:03:29.50 where one-third of the population 00:03:29.54\00:03:31.44 live below the poverty line earning less than $2 a day. 00:03:31.47\00:03:36.78 Well, most of our work is in India. 00:03:36.81\00:03:40.25 But when we come to Nepal, 00:03:40.28\00:03:42.82 we see a different level of poverty. 00:03:42.85\00:03:45.45 The economy is certainly worse here, 00:03:45.49\00:03:47.46 the level of poverty, the level of pollution. 00:03:47.49\00:03:50.86 There is a huge need 00:03:50.89\00:03:52.23 and we want to do more in Nepal. 00:03:52.26\00:03:54.30 With a majority of Nepalese depending on their daily wages, 00:03:54.33\00:03:57.63 obtaining healthcare is one of the main challenges 00:03:57.67\00:04:00.47 people face in this developing country. 00:04:00.50\00:04:03.07 This is where Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:04:03.10\00:04:05.04 plays a crucial role in serving the medical needs 00:04:05.07\00:04:07.64 of the people of Nepal. 00:04:07.68\00:04:09.11 Scheer Memorial Hospital was established 00:04:12.88\00:04:14.95 over 55 years ago 00:04:14.98\00:04:16.55 by Adventist missionaries serving in Nepal. 00:04:16.58\00:04:19.35 Situated just outside Katmandu, 00:04:19.39\00:04:21.92 the hospital is an important institution 00:04:21.96\00:04:24.09 for the community 00:04:24.13\00:04:25.46 and the Adventist church in Nepal. 00:04:25.49\00:04:27.86 Well, at the beginning of hospital, 00:04:27.90\00:04:32.03 after the establishment of hospital 00:04:32.07\00:04:33.47 is when the church has started to expand. 00:04:33.50\00:04:36.04 So Scheer Memorial Hospital is basically the birth of 00:04:36.07\00:04:39.91 the Adventist community in Nepal. 00:04:39.94\00:04:43.08 By now the church have been growing. 00:04:43.11\00:04:46.15 Now we have over around 4,000 members. 00:04:46.18\00:04:50.32 But the main organization 00:04:50.35\00:04:52.32 or the center of Adventist church 00:04:52.35\00:04:53.69 in Nepal is our hospital. 00:04:53.72\00:04:57.49 Although the cost of a doctor's consultation 00:04:57.53\00:04:59.89 is only $0.33, some cannot even afford that. 00:04:59.93\00:05:03.80 People come from miles around 00:05:03.83\00:05:05.73 from rural villages to hilltop settlements 00:05:05.77\00:05:08.20 seeking medical health. 00:05:08.24\00:05:09.80 The hospital also provides ambulance services 00:05:09.84\00:05:12.41 to emergency cases, 00:05:12.44\00:05:13.94 often traversing through inaccessible 00:05:13.98\00:05:15.98 and dangerous roads. 00:05:16.01\00:05:17.48 Child Impact International's focus 00:05:32.43\00:05:34.40 has always been about children. 00:05:34.43\00:05:36.36 Providing children 00:05:36.40\00:05:37.73 who are in need with an education 00:05:37.77\00:05:39.23 and giving them an opportunity for a better future 00:05:39.27\00:05:41.84 through its sponsorship program. 00:05:41.87\00:05:43.61 Along with a need to get healthcare 00:05:43.64\00:05:45.41 and access to medical centers, 00:05:45.44\00:05:47.18 the opportunity to get good education 00:05:47.21\00:05:49.38 is highly important to the people of Nepal. 00:05:49.41\00:05:51.81 The main thing is education. 00:05:51.85\00:05:54.28 And because in this part of the world 00:05:54.32\00:05:55.78 if you've got no education, your life is really, 00:05:55.82\00:06:01.86 you know, you can't earn hardly anything. 00:06:01.89\00:06:05.33 All you can do is labor. 00:06:05.36\00:06:07.43 And in many places 00:06:07.46\00:06:08.80 what the labors are paid is almost nothing. 00:06:08.83\00:06:11.80 So I think education 00:06:11.83\00:06:13.57 just makes so much difference in this part of the world, 00:06:13.60\00:06:16.97 more than it does in western countries. 00:06:17.01\00:06:20.61 But in a world where earning $2 a day 00:06:20.64\00:06:23.04 is a struggle for the majority of the people. 00:06:23.08\00:06:25.28 Sending their children to school 00:06:25.31\00:06:27.12 is a strain on their finances and it remains a distant dream. 00:06:27.15\00:06:31.19 Without sponsorship, 00:06:31.22\00:06:32.55 it would be very difficult for their children 00:06:32.59\00:06:34.49 to receive an education. 00:06:34.52\00:06:36.59 I am here at the school where Asian Aid USA 00:06:36.62\00:06:39.46 is sponsoring a number of children 00:06:39.49\00:06:41.76 next to Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:06:41.80\00:06:44.17 in Katmandu in Nepal. 00:06:44.20\00:06:46.40 We have about 40 children at this school, 00:06:46.43\00:06:50.11 and we want to increase the numbers. 00:06:50.14\00:06:52.64 This school is very important Asian Aid USA 00:06:52.67\00:06:55.68 as we don't have many schools in Nepal 00:06:55.71\00:06:58.38 that we are involved in. 00:06:58.41\00:06:59.98 And we have chosen this school 00:07:00.02\00:07:01.95 because of its close relationship 00:07:01.98\00:07:04.15 to the Scheer Memorial Hospital but also the need in the area. 00:07:04.19\00:07:08.52 Children from the local community 00:07:12.59\00:07:14.36 and some of the hospital staff's children 00:07:14.40\00:07:16.43 attend the school. 00:07:16.46\00:07:17.80 Although the church is trying 00:07:17.83\00:07:19.17 to develop more schools in Nepal, 00:07:19.20\00:07:21.10 without sponsorship it would be difficult 00:07:21.14\00:07:23.14 to attract students from the community. 00:07:23.17\00:07:25.21 Suman Praja 00:08:03.21\00:08:04.55 is a fourth grade student at the school, 00:08:04.58\00:08:06.68 orphaned at a very young age. 00:08:06.72\00:08:08.62 Suman grew up begging in the streets 00:08:08.65\00:08:10.82 in the town close to Scheer Memorial Hospital. 00:08:10.85\00:08:13.62 A local church pastor found him 00:08:13.66\00:08:15.42 and brought him to a small orphanage 00:08:15.46\00:08:17.29 he was running for abandoned children. 00:08:17.33\00:08:19.49 His church members supported his work 00:08:19.53\00:08:21.60 and provided funding 00:08:21.63\00:08:22.96 for their food and accommodations. 00:08:23.00\00:08:24.80 But he found it difficult to pay their tuition fees. 00:08:24.83\00:08:27.97 Fortunately for Suman, 00:08:28.00\00:08:29.34 the pastor knew people at Scheer Memorial, 00:08:29.37\00:08:31.64 and Suman was enrolled at the school. 00:08:31.67\00:08:36.64 I am very happy that Suman could go to the school, 00:08:36.68\00:08:40.02 and he's getting sponsorship. 00:08:40.05\00:08:42.25 And this school at the hospital is a Christian school, 00:08:42.28\00:08:45.52 and he could continue to learn about Jesus there. 00:08:45.55\00:08:47.92 My name is Goma Paudyal. I teach in playgroup. 00:09:16.15\00:09:20.59 These kids are lovely, and I enjoy teaching them. 00:09:20.62\00:09:24.16 This is the best job I enjoy the most, 00:09:24.19\00:09:26.19 and I don't even notice when the time pass 00:09:26.23\00:09:28.86 when I'm playing with them and teaching them. 00:09:28.90\00:09:31.23 This is what I enjoy the most here. 00:09:31.27\00:09:36.37 The school provides employment to teachers 00:09:36.40\00:09:38.54 who are from the local community. 00:09:38.57\00:09:40.31 Like Goma Paudyal, 00:09:40.34\00:09:41.68 who otherwise would have to travel long distances 00:09:41.71\00:09:44.45 or go to Katmandu to find a good teaching job. 00:09:44.48\00:09:47.68 The school also provides 00:09:47.72\00:09:49.08 one nourishing meal a day for all the children 00:09:49.12\00:09:51.42 as part of its incentive program 00:09:51.45\00:09:53.49 to encourage parents to send their children to school. 00:09:53.52\00:09:56.36 Education is highly valued in Nepal 00:10:00.43\00:10:02.76 as it is the rest of South Asia. 00:10:02.80\00:10:04.93 Parents perceive a good education 00:10:04.97\00:10:06.74 as a catalyst for change. 00:10:06.77\00:10:08.50 This perception is not just 00:10:08.54\00:10:10.04 for a better future for their children, 00:10:10.07\00:10:12.11 but they also believe it will bring changes 00:10:12.14\00:10:14.18 to their own fortunes. 00:10:14.21\00:10:16.44 In these cultures, usually the educated children 00:10:16.48\00:10:19.75 will care for the parents also when they get old 00:10:19.78\00:10:22.48 because if a parent gets to the place 00:10:22.52\00:10:24.92 where they are too sick 00:10:24.95\00:10:26.79 and too old to work in the fields 00:10:26.82\00:10:28.76 or whatever laboring work they've been doing. 00:10:28.79\00:10:31.23 Well, what do you do, 00:10:31.26\00:10:32.96 you basically beg, and starve or, 00:10:32.99\00:10:35.96 you know, depending where you live, 00:10:36.00\00:10:38.10 maybe some beggars, 00:10:38.13\00:10:39.47 you know, can make a little bit. 00:10:39.50\00:10:41.00 But in remote areas 00:10:41.04\00:10:43.41 especially if they're in a village, 00:10:43.44\00:10:44.77 where everybody's poor, 00:10:44.81\00:10:46.17 you know, they are lucky to get anything. 00:10:46.21\00:10:48.44 So I think a lot of parents also think about that that, 00:10:48.48\00:10:52.31 you know, if my child gets a good education, 00:10:52.35\00:10:54.65 it'll also be a blessing to me in my old age. 00:10:54.68\00:10:57.02 My name is Andrew Rapp. 00:11:03.36\00:11:04.69 I'm from Walla Walla University. 00:11:04.73\00:11:06.53 I'm studying business marketing and international business. 00:11:06.56\00:11:10.23 But I took a gap year to come to Nepal 00:11:10.27\00:11:12.93 and work as a volunteer school teacher 00:11:12.97\00:11:15.24 and youth mentor. 00:11:15.27\00:11:17.21 Colorado native Andrew 00:11:17.24\00:11:18.81 is a volunteer teacher at the school 00:11:18.84\00:11:21.11 because of its close association 00:11:21.14\00:11:22.71 with the hospital, 00:11:22.74\00:11:24.08 the school has been privileged to bring in overseas teachers 00:11:24.11\00:11:27.12 who come here bringing a new approach to teaching. 00:11:27.15\00:11:29.78 This not only exposes the students 00:11:29.82\00:11:31.75 to an international array of teachers 00:11:31.79\00:11:33.82 but also helps the missionary teachers 00:11:33.86\00:11:35.92 get a different outlook in life. 00:11:35.96\00:11:38.16 I think for me, 00:11:38.19\00:11:39.76 it was really important just to be able 00:11:39.79\00:11:41.56 to take a break, 00:11:41.60\00:11:43.77 take a step back from my life in school 00:11:43.80\00:11:46.23 and being so focused on what I want to do. 00:11:46.27\00:11:48.90 And take a step back and see what other people need, 00:11:48.94\00:11:53.14 that there's more important things than just my concerns. 00:11:53.17\00:11:56.75 There's people that have more immediate needs 00:11:56.78\00:11:59.98 than the fickle things that 00:12:00.02\00:12:01.82 I think might be so important back home. 00:12:01.85\00:12:05.62 No doubt, a good Christian education in schools 00:12:05.65\00:12:08.39 providing that opportunity 00:12:08.42\00:12:09.92 is a beacon of hope for the children here. 00:12:09.96\00:12:12.23 And Child Impact sponsorship program 00:12:12.26\00:12:14.46 is helping them see that ray of hope 00:12:14.50\00:12:16.40 in this impoverished yet idyllic region. 00:12:16.43\00:12:19.37 But all is not what it seems, underneath its beauty, 00:12:19.40\00:12:22.54 in the fields and hilltops, villages and towns, 00:12:22.57\00:12:25.44 women are living in pain. 00:12:25.47\00:12:27.38 When we come back, we look at how over half a million women 00:12:27.41\00:12:30.48 are suffering from uterine prolapse, 00:12:30.51\00:12:32.65 and discover how Child Impact International 00:12:32.68\00:12:35.15 is helping ease their pain. 00:12:35.18\00:12:36.72 A couple of years ago my daughters and I 00:12:44.53\00:12:46.53 had a wonderful opportunity to travel to India. 00:12:46.56\00:12:49.90 And while we were there, 00:12:49.93\00:12:51.27 we met yet another part of our family 00:12:51.30\00:12:53.13 that's our sponsor daughter Sheila. 00:12:53.17\00:12:55.50 We've had the privilege of sponsoring Sheila 00:12:55.54\00:12:57.67 through Child Impact International 00:12:57.71\00:12:59.54 for more than three years now. 00:12:59.57\00:13:01.91 And, you know, while we were there, 00:13:01.94\00:13:03.51 she shared with us 00:13:03.55\00:13:04.91 that her dream was to become a nurse. 00:13:04.95\00:13:08.08 Now, it's a wonderful privilege for us as a family 00:13:08.12\00:13:11.62 to know that she is fulfilling that dream. 00:13:11.65\00:13:14.59 Sheila is now studying to be a nurse. 00:13:14.62\00:13:17.59 She's in college, 00:13:17.63\00:13:18.96 and we could not be happier for her. 00:13:18.99\00:13:21.00 It's been wonderful to be part of that journey with her. 00:13:21.03\00:13:24.53 And, you know, sponsoring a child 00:13:24.57\00:13:26.40 through Child Impact, 00:13:26.43\00:13:27.77 it's made an incredible difference for our family. 00:13:27.80\00:13:30.81 And I know that for you sponsoring a child 00:13:30.84\00:13:33.38 can make a difference for you too. 00:13:33.41\00:13:35.41 But most importantly, 00:13:35.44\00:13:36.78 it can make the difference 00:13:36.81\00:13:38.15 in the life of a child every day. 00:13:38.18\00:13:40.45 At Adventist mission schools like this one in Bangladesh, 00:13:49.62\00:13:53.09 Child Impact International sponsors hundreds of children. 00:13:53.13\00:13:56.87 We often think that sponsorship 00:13:56.90\00:13:59.20 only impacts on the life of the child, 00:13:59.23\00:14:01.84 but it's much wider than that, 00:14:01.87\00:14:03.71 it impacts on the parents and on the community. 00:14:03.74\00:14:07.21 But more important, it impacts on the school. 00:14:07.24\00:14:10.55 It becomes valuable income for the school, 00:14:10.58\00:14:13.68 and then in turn, 00:14:13.72\00:14:15.05 it impacts on hundreds of other children. 00:14:15.08\00:14:17.59 I just ask that you would consider sponsoring a child 00:14:17.62\00:14:21.02 with Child Impact 00:14:21.06\00:14:22.39 or supporting one of its valuable projects 00:14:22.42\00:14:25.09 that will improve education in Adventist mission schools 00:14:25.13\00:14:28.96 like this one in right here. 00:14:29.00\00:14:30.73 Nepal sandwiched between two Asian giants 00:14:51.55\00:14:54.46 China and India 00:14:54.49\00:14:55.82 is a landlocked sovereign state in the Himalayas. 00:14:55.86\00:14:58.93 The mountain range in the north 00:14:58.96\00:15:00.30 is home to eight of the world's tallest mountain peaks, 00:15:00.33\00:15:03.63 including the highest point on earth, Mount Everest, 00:15:03.67\00:15:06.53 thus making it popular for mountaineering. 00:15:06.57\00:15:09.30 Hinduism is practiced by over 80% of the population 00:15:09.34\00:15:13.17 making it the country 00:15:13.21\00:15:14.54 with the highest percentage of Hindus. 00:15:14.58\00:15:16.58 With the birthplace of Buddha located in this region, 00:15:16.61\00:15:19.45 Nepal is also historically linked with Buddhism 00:15:19.48\00:15:22.48 making it culturally very rich. 00:15:22.52\00:15:25.02 However, Nepal is also economically challenged 00:15:25.05\00:15:28.52 and it's home to some of the poorest 00:15:28.56\00:15:30.29 people on the planet. 00:15:30.33\00:15:31.93 In this economically backward environment and harsh terrain 00:15:31.96\00:15:35.23 where infrastructure and transport is unavailable, 00:15:35.26\00:15:38.37 women become the beast of burden. 00:15:38.40\00:15:40.30 Economic difficulties and cultural perceptions 00:15:48.48\00:15:51.35 have made women of Nepal suffer silently. 00:15:51.38\00:15:54.25 The condition is called uterine prolapse. 00:15:54.28\00:15:58.59 Yes, this is something very interesting 00:15:58.62\00:16:00.02 because this condition of uterus prolapse 00:16:00.06\00:16:02.49 is not so common in most of the countries. 00:16:02.52\00:16:05.46 But interestingly in Nepal 00:16:05.49\00:16:07.93 it is very common to see uterus prolapse in women. 00:16:07.96\00:16:12.20 And the reason, we don't know exactly the reason, 00:16:12.23\00:16:14.54 but over here the ladies have to carry a lot of weight, 00:16:14.57\00:16:19.41 so weight carrying also provide 00:16:19.44\00:16:22.61 the incidents of prolapse more high, 00:16:22.64\00:16:26.55 also having more children 00:16:26.58\00:16:28.38 also provide more incidents of having this problem. 00:16:28.42\00:16:32.55 So it is multi-factorial, 00:16:32.59\00:16:34.46 we cannot point to only one thing. 00:16:34.49\00:16:38.63 But what we know is that in Nepal, 00:16:38.66\00:16:41.43 it is very common to have this problem. 00:16:41.46\00:16:46.53 Uterine prolapse is a condition in women 00:16:46.57\00:16:49.00 where their uterus just falls off their body. 00:16:49.04\00:16:51.91 We learn that one of the main reasons 00:16:51.94\00:16:53.81 women get prolapsed 00:16:53.84\00:16:55.21 is because they are forced to carry heavy loads. 00:16:55.24\00:16:57.91 Sometimes around 50 kilos strapped around their forehead 00:16:57.95\00:17:01.58 pressing down on their neck. 00:17:01.62\00:17:03.12 Often they have to continue 00:17:03.15\00:17:04.49 with this heavy labor right after childbirth. 00:17:04.52\00:17:07.09 The stress and pressure this puts on their lower back 00:17:07.12\00:17:09.69 is so dangerous, 00:17:09.72\00:17:11.06 and their delicate bodies cannot support their uterus. 00:17:11.09\00:17:13.93 We cannot go into the detail of what is the condition 00:17:21.97\00:17:25.17 but having this condition 00:17:25.21\00:17:27.11 affect the woman in an extreme way, 00:17:27.14\00:17:31.25 to the extreme that sometimes the husband leave them 00:17:31.28\00:17:35.55 because of the marital problem that they may have. 00:17:35.58\00:17:39.22 So yes, it is a very incapacitating condition 00:17:39.25\00:17:43.29 for the woman and affects not only the woman 00:17:43.32\00:17:46.03 but also the entire family. 00:17:46.06\00:17:49.16 In this patriarchal society, 00:17:49.20\00:17:51.07 women suffering from prolapse 00:17:51.10\00:17:52.73 are ashamed for their condition, 00:17:52.77\00:17:54.64 and they don't want to come forward 00:17:54.67\00:17:56.00 and suffer in silence for decades. 00:17:56.04\00:17:58.27 The psychological impact this has on their wellbeing 00:17:58.31\00:18:01.14 affects their already battered physical condition. 00:18:01.18\00:18:04.31 Thousands go undetected and when they are discovered, 00:18:04.35\00:18:07.48 they become outcasts, excluded, 00:18:07.52\00:18:09.75 and deserted by their husbands and families. 00:18:09.78\00:18:12.12 Today, women suffering 00:18:23.57\00:18:25.03 from uterine prolapse have hope. 00:18:25.07\00:18:27.20 Over the last 10 years, 00:18:27.24\00:18:28.74 Child Impact International has funded a program 00:18:28.77\00:18:31.64 along with Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:18:31.67\00:18:33.71 to identify these women 00:18:33.74\00:18:35.14 wherever they are and facilitate surgeries 00:18:35.18\00:18:38.11 and provide much needed preventive health education. 00:18:38.15\00:18:41.48 Well, we're partnering with Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:18:41.52\00:18:44.29 because we truly believe 00:18:44.32\00:18:45.82 they're doing a wonderful job in the community. 00:18:45.85\00:18:49.22 It's the only Adventist Hospital in Nepal. 00:18:49.26\00:18:52.79 It's a critical part of the church in Nepal. 00:18:52.83\00:18:56.36 And they now have the facilities 00:18:56.40\00:19:00.24 to do the prolapse operations. 00:19:00.27\00:19:03.54 And so our funding program is very valuable to them 00:19:03.57\00:19:08.41 because they have plenty of capacity. 00:19:08.44\00:19:10.81 And so for us, 00:19:10.85\00:19:13.25 it's very rewarding not only to make 00:19:13.28\00:19:18.15 the change of lives with the women, 00:19:18.19\00:19:20.26 but also we're able to help the institution 00:19:20.29\00:19:23.69 in gaining work and doing work in the community. 00:19:23.73\00:19:27.60 Here at the hospital, 00:19:27.63\00:19:29.76 we have done a lot of prolapse operations. 00:19:29.80\00:19:32.67 I think... 00:19:32.70\00:19:34.04 I forget how many years we've been doing it now, 00:19:34.07\00:19:35.57 maybe 10 or 11 years, but during that time, 00:19:35.60\00:19:38.31 we have now operated on between 8,000 to 9,000 ladies. 00:19:38.34\00:19:42.14 And to see the difference it makes, you know, 00:19:42.18\00:19:46.72 I just can't imagine 00:19:46.75\00:19:48.88 how these women like to spend one... 00:19:48.92\00:19:51.15 I remember one lady, 00:19:51.19\00:19:52.52 she told us that she had been walking around 00:19:52.55\00:19:54.16 with this prolapse hanging out of her body for 50 years. 00:19:54.19\00:19:59.29 Well, as a hospital 00:19:59.33\00:20:01.03 we can say that we are very grateful 00:20:01.06\00:20:03.16 for Asian Aid 00:20:03.20\00:20:04.53 because they have been providing surgeries 00:20:04.57\00:20:06.74 or support for surgeries for the last two years. 00:20:06.77\00:20:09.77 And we are grateful in behalf of the families and the patient 00:20:09.80\00:20:13.41 that we have been treating since. 00:20:13.44\00:20:15.04 Thanks to the help of Asian Aid. 00:20:15.08\00:20:17.25 All throughout its history, 00:20:28.66\00:20:30.19 Scheer Memorial Hospital has been privileged 00:20:30.23\00:20:32.59 to host a number of medical professionals from abroad 00:20:32.63\00:20:35.76 who volunteer their time and expertise conducting camps. 00:20:35.80\00:20:39.50 This has benefited thousands of people 00:20:39.53\00:20:41.54 from the local community, especially women. 00:20:41.57\00:20:44.31 This week, a group from Sydney Adventist Hospital 00:20:44.34\00:20:47.01 from Sydney, Australia is here conducting prolapse operations. 00:20:47.04\00:20:51.18 If you save these women have it fixed, 00:20:51.21\00:20:53.72 not have that prolapse any more, 00:20:53.75\00:20:55.65 they're so happy. 00:20:55.68\00:20:57.02 They hug us, they kiss us, they want to shake our hand, 00:20:57.05\00:21:00.29 they want to touch us, 00:21:00.32\00:21:01.72 and it's just humbling, very humbling 00:21:01.76\00:21:05.73 because we're so grateful now in our society 00:21:05.76\00:21:09.70 that you just don't realize how hard it is for them here 00:21:09.73\00:21:14.37 to be working under the circumstances 00:21:14.40\00:21:16.60 they got to work under. 00:21:16.64\00:21:19.34 Karen is part of a volunteer group 00:21:19.37\00:21:21.51 Open Heart International from Sydney. 00:21:21.54\00:21:23.71 These are medical professionals 00:21:23.75\00:21:25.15 who go to various developing countries each year 00:21:25.18\00:21:27.82 conducting medical camps. 00:21:27.85\00:21:29.65 For Karen and her team, 00:21:29.68\00:21:31.19 camps such as these may seem just another day's work, 00:21:31.22\00:21:34.42 but it has a profound impact on these women 00:21:34.46\00:21:36.83 who suffer from prolapse. 00:21:36.86\00:21:38.63 And for the volunteers, 00:21:38.66\00:21:40.00 it's an opportunity to make a difference 00:21:40.03\00:21:41.86 in their own humble ways. 00:21:41.90\00:21:43.77 Volunteering to me, it's emotional. 00:21:43.80\00:21:47.94 You all get very drawn in to 00:21:47.97\00:21:50.21 what they don't have and what we can do to them. 00:21:50.24\00:21:52.81 We might think we're just doing 00:21:52.84\00:21:54.31 what we do every day back at home, 00:21:54.34\00:21:56.85 but for them it's life changing. 00:21:56.88\00:21:59.08 And even though it might seem just a drop in the ocean, 00:21:59.11\00:22:04.49 for 80 to 90 women in the 10 days 00:22:04.52\00:22:07.69 that we are here operating, 00:22:07.72\00:22:09.26 it changes their lives and that change of life 00:22:09.29\00:22:12.53 for these people that makes it emotional. 00:22:12.56\00:22:16.83 Scheer Memorial Hospital is overwhelmed 00:22:16.87\00:22:19.20 with the inflow of women 00:22:19.23\00:22:20.57 needing surgeries for uterine prolapse. 00:22:20.60\00:22:22.97 Without these volunteers, 00:22:23.00\00:22:24.47 it will be a tough task to facilitate them all. 00:22:24.51\00:22:27.51 In the hospital, we have 200 to 300 surgeries 00:22:27.54\00:22:30.01 will be there in the year. 00:22:30.05\00:22:31.55 Out of 200 to 300, 00:22:31.58\00:22:33.01 we have 30 to 40% of surgery 00:22:33.05\00:22:36.48 will be done the uterine prolapse. 00:22:36.52\00:22:39.09 The only thing that is stopping us to doing more, 00:22:39.12\00:22:43.06 it is basically the financial aspect. 00:22:43.09\00:22:45.13 If we have more, more funding, we can do even more. 00:22:45.16\00:22:48.93 Right now, we do have some funding, 00:22:48.96\00:22:50.50 some other organizations that they come 00:22:50.53\00:22:52.47 and do the surgery themselves. 00:22:52.50\00:22:54.67 But how many we can do, 00:22:54.70\00:22:56.20 it is basically 300, 400, it's countless 00:22:56.24\00:23:01.84 because the incidents is extremely high. 00:23:01.88\00:23:04.11 Over half a million women 00:23:08.42\00:23:09.78 are suffering from prolapse in Nepal, 00:23:09.82\00:23:12.15 and Scheer Memorial Hospital is a place 00:23:12.19\00:23:14.26 they can come to get it fixed and ease their suffering. 00:23:14.29\00:23:17.39 It's so apt to say that Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:23:17.43\00:23:20.76 is truly a beacon on the hilltop. 00:23:20.80\00:23:24.03 To have an institution, 00:23:24.07\00:23:25.97 and for Asian Aid 00:23:26.00\00:23:27.34 to provide the opportunity to these ladies, 00:23:27.37\00:23:30.81 who don't have to live with this, 00:23:30.84\00:23:32.47 this is curable, this is fixable, 00:23:32.51\00:23:36.61 you know, that's the benefit. 00:23:36.64\00:23:38.08 Imagine when a lady has the operation, 00:23:38.11\00:23:40.95 she goes back, 00:23:40.98\00:23:42.32 she's now accepted into the home, 00:23:42.35\00:23:45.72 she can mend relationships, 00:23:45.75\00:23:48.12 she can add value to the family, 00:23:48.16\00:23:50.39 she can add value to the community 00:23:50.43\00:23:52.46 through the other ladies, spread the good news, 00:23:52.49\00:23:56.13 tell them about how people love them 00:23:56.16\00:23:58.00 and want to make things different for them. 00:23:58.03\00:24:00.77 Isn't that a blessing? 00:24:00.80\00:24:04.67 The good news is spreading among women in Nepal. 00:24:04.71\00:24:07.44 The more women are identified, educated, 00:24:07.48\00:24:09.84 and brought to these camps, 00:24:09.88\00:24:11.31 the more women are willing to come out 00:24:11.35\00:24:13.31 and seek medical care. 00:24:13.35\00:24:15.02 This one here, her name is Punyeshwari, 00:24:15.05\00:24:18.05 and she actually has... 00:24:18.09\00:24:20.12 Because she's been so grateful 00:24:20.16\00:24:21.86 for what has happened in her life, 00:24:21.89\00:24:23.63 she has now brought 25 more ladies 00:24:23.66\00:24:27.03 who had operations. 00:24:27.06\00:24:28.96 And I think that's really special. 00:24:29.00\00:24:31.00 And so they're just... 00:24:31.03\00:24:32.37 When we told them we were having a filming today, 00:24:32.40\00:24:34.60 they were just so thrilled to think 00:24:34.64\00:24:36.10 that they could come and say 00:24:36.14\00:24:37.67 how grateful they are for the transformation 00:24:37.71\00:24:40.08 that's happened in their lives. 00:24:40.11\00:24:44.68 Well, it's changed their lives 00:24:44.71\00:24:46.05 and now that they can walk comfortably, 00:24:46.08\00:24:48.12 they are able to work, and help, you know, 00:24:48.15\00:24:50.69 care for their families, 00:24:50.72\00:24:52.05 it's a totally transforming thing 00:24:52.09\00:24:55.49 that I think we just couldn't understand 00:24:55.52\00:24:58.63 unless we had actually been through the same experience 00:24:58.66\00:25:01.23 as they have been. 00:25:01.26\00:25:02.60 And for this lady to bring 25, I think that's really something 00:25:02.63\00:25:05.80 because that shows how grateful she is 00:25:05.83\00:25:09.37 for the operation that she's had. 00:25:09.40\00:25:11.67 Today, Adventist missions like Scheer Memorial Hospital, 00:25:16.64\00:25:19.91 organizations like Child Impact International, 00:25:19.95\00:25:22.52 and the goodwill of hundreds of volunteers and missionaries 00:25:22.55\00:25:25.59 is making a difference. 00:25:25.62\00:25:27.16 And bringing a healing touch to women in Nepal, 00:25:27.19\00:25:29.86 transforming their lives every single day. 00:25:29.89\00:25:32.76 Together it is possible to facilitate 00:25:32.79\00:25:35.06 this transformation for these grateful women. 00:25:35.10\00:25:37.77 It is possible to put smiles back on their faces, 00:25:37.80\00:25:40.80 just to hear them say, "Thank you." 00:25:40.84\00:25:43.04 They are a nation, 00:25:49.84\00:25:52.15 who are so loving and thankful, 00:25:52.18\00:25:55.08 and if I can just help a little bit, 00:25:55.12\00:25:57.22 I'll keep coming back. 00:25:57.25\00:25:58.72
