00:01:04.53\00:01:06.83 deaf, and the blind children 00:01:06.86\00:01:08.80 giving them a sense of place, a home, 00:01:08.83\00:01:11.63 but above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:11.67\00:01:15.40 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:15.44\00:01:18.81 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:18.84\00:01:21.51 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:21.54\00:01:23.35 I'm Jim Rennie. 00:01:30.95\00:01:32.29 For over the last eight years, 00:01:32.32\00:01:33.86 I've been CEO of Asian Aid USA. 00:01:33.89\00:01:37.36 Asian Aid was established over 50 years ago 00:01:37.39\00:01:40.70 and in that time has helped tens of thousands of children 00:01:40.73\00:01:44.33 in over five countries. 00:01:44.37\00:01:46.37 As a part of a bold new strategy, 00:01:46.40\00:01:49.47 we're changing our name. 00:01:49.50\00:01:51.34 We are now Child Impact International. 00:01:51.37\00:01:55.24 We feel our new name 00:01:55.28\00:01:56.61 will better encompass the work that we do. 00:01:56.64\00:01:59.51 Let me briefly explain what I mean. 00:01:59.55\00:02:02.92 This exciting new name Child Impact International 00:02:02.95\00:02:07.16 will give us momentum as we move forward 00:02:07.19\00:02:10.26 to help thousands of additional children. 00:02:10.29\00:02:13.33 As we work with our focus groups, 00:02:13.36\00:02:15.40 we felt Child Impact International describes 00:02:15.43\00:02:18.73 who we are and what we do for the following reasons. 00:02:18.77\00:02:23.30 This name reflects far more clearly 00:02:23.34\00:02:25.87 the critical work that we're doing 00:02:25.91\00:02:27.84 with very needy students, 00:02:27.88\00:02:29.84 their families and mission schools. 00:02:29.88\00:02:32.41 Child Impact International gives momentum and direction 00:02:32.45\00:02:36.22 to a bold growth strategy 00:02:36.25\00:02:38.15 that will impact the lives 00:02:38.19\00:02:39.59 of thousands of additional children. 00:02:39.62\00:02:42.69 This name avoids any confusion in regards to where we work 00:02:42.72\00:02:46.93 and what people consider Asia. 00:02:46.96\00:02:50.07 This name gives a clear distinction 00:02:50.10\00:02:52.63 between this organization and Asian Aid Australia, 00:02:52.67\00:02:56.54 which are completely separate. 00:02:56.57\00:02:58.84 The name Child Impact International 00:02:58.87\00:03:01.78 provides us the opportunity to help more children 00:03:01.81\00:03:05.41 and expand our activity beyond Asia. 00:03:05.45\00:03:09.58 Internally, nothing will change, 00:03:09.62\00:03:12.15 the board, staff, policies, 00:03:12.19\00:03:14.52 and work we do will stay the same, 00:03:14.56\00:03:17.26 and at the same level of excellence 00:03:17.29\00:03:19.59 that we're known for. 00:03:19.63\00:03:21.23 We're staying in Collegedale, Tennessee. 00:03:21.26\00:03:23.90 Philosophically however, 00:03:23.93\00:03:25.63 the new name Child Impact International 00:03:25.67\00:03:29.20 will allow our organization to expand 00:03:29.24\00:03:32.31 and give momentum to help 00:03:32.34\00:03:34.18 thousands of new needy children. 00:03:34.21\00:03:37.11 You have an opportunity to be involved 00:03:43.35\00:03:45.35 in the mission field every day, 00:03:45.39\00:03:47.29 every morning with child sponsorship. 00:03:47.32\00:03:49.86 You can impact on the lives of children 00:03:49.89\00:03:52.39 just like these ones here. 00:03:52.43\00:03:54.43 You can help set their lives on a new course 00:03:54.46\00:03:57.23 and also give them hope 00:03:57.27\00:03:58.90 that can change their lives forever. 00:03:58.93\00:04:01.97 Our funds go directly to support the needs 00:04:02.00\00:04:04.67 of an Adventist mission school, 00:04:04.71\00:04:06.68 which heightens the quality of education 00:04:06.71\00:04:09.28 just not for the children who are sponsored, 00:04:09.31\00:04:11.81 but all the children in the school. 00:04:11.85\00:04:14.58 The reality is that poverty is very hard to change. 00:04:14.62\00:04:18.72 Child Impact International sponsorship program 00:04:18.75\00:04:22.32 takes the child based on need 00:04:22.36\00:04:24.43 and puts them in an Adventist mission school. 00:04:24.46\00:04:26.93 It gives them a direction, it gives them hope, 00:04:26.96\00:04:29.83 and also has an impact in the communities 00:04:29.86\00:04:33.23 and with their families and friends. 00:04:33.27\00:04:35.90 Together, you and I can have a huge change 00:04:35.94\00:04:39.84 on an entire community just like 00:04:39.87\00:04:42.34 the ones around the school. 00:04:42.38\00:04:45.11 For existing donors, the only change you'll see 00:04:45.15\00:04:48.52 is an advancement in the communication 00:04:48.55\00:04:51.69 between your child and projects. 00:04:51.72\00:04:54.69 You'll see a real difference by using new technologies 00:04:54.72\00:04:58.63 to keep you up-to-date 00:04:58.66\00:05:00.20 on how you support Child Impact. 00:05:00.23\00:05:03.03 The work of Child Impact International 00:05:17.45\00:05:19.65 will continue to grow in the countries 00:05:19.68\00:05:22.15 we already operate in like India, Myanmar, 00:05:22.18\00:05:25.42 Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. 00:05:25.45\00:05:28.42 And as opportunities arise, 00:05:28.46\00:05:30.63 we will expand into other countries. 00:05:30.66\00:05:33.33 The poverty which you see 00:05:33.36\00:05:35.00 in communities like this is real. 00:05:35.03\00:05:37.73 These families struggle to feed and educate their children. 00:05:37.77\00:05:41.74 You can have an impact right here, 00:05:41.77\00:05:44.41 right now by becoming a sponsor of a child 00:05:44.44\00:05:47.68 or partnering with Child Impact. 00:05:47.71\00:05:50.25 Child Impact is a fully supportive ministry 00:05:50.28\00:05:53.11 of the Adventist church 00:05:53.15\00:05:54.88 and supports children, and orphans, 00:05:54.92\00:05:57.32 and special needs children 00:05:57.35\00:05:59.22 in Adventist homes and mission schools. 00:05:59.25\00:06:02.36 Each child's life has changed 00:06:02.39\00:06:05.26 and the mission school gains unique funds. 00:06:05.29\00:06:08.96 You have an opportunity to be involved in the mission field 00:06:09.00\00:06:12.33 every day by becoming a sponsor or a supporter 00:06:12.37\00:06:16.50 of Child Impact International. 00:06:16.54\00:06:18.91 Welcome back to our program about Child Impact, 00:06:25.21\00:06:28.92 and one of these projects that you have going 00:06:28.95\00:06:30.99 is called Operation Child Rescue. 00:06:31.02\00:06:34.29 When I was there, 00:06:34.32\00:06:35.66 I saw a little bit of this program. 00:06:35.69\00:06:38.99 It is really, really awesome and exciting 00:06:39.03\00:06:41.73 as well as very important. 00:06:41.76\00:06:43.77 Jim, tell us about Operation Child Rescue? 00:06:43.80\00:06:46.40 Well, when you operate in India, 00:06:46.43\00:06:49.94 you start to understand what trafficking is. 00:06:49.97\00:06:53.51 To be honest, it's hard to comprehend the size of it. 00:06:53.54\00:06:57.21 But it's believed that about 00:06:57.25\00:06:59.05 20% of the trafficked children are in India. 00:06:59.08\00:07:03.89 Obviously, with young girls 00:07:03.92\00:07:05.75 in the sex traffic and brothels, 00:07:05.79\00:07:08.39 but also with young boys 00:07:08.42\00:07:10.13 in beggary operations and child labor. 00:07:10.16\00:07:14.36 And so, we just feel we had to be involved, 00:07:14.40\00:07:17.70 so we've partnered with a lady 00:07:17.73\00:07:20.54 who runs a rescue operation in Bangalore. 00:07:20.57\00:07:24.84 And she actually goes in and rescue girls, 00:07:24.87\00:07:29.71 raids these brothels and rescue girls. 00:07:29.74\00:07:33.08 And to be honest, it takes a lot of something to do this, 00:07:33.11\00:07:38.52 but she ties them with the police force 00:07:38.55\00:07:40.59 where she can. 00:07:40.62\00:07:42.02 And we are so excited 00:07:42.06\00:07:43.89 that we can help fund this rescue work, 00:07:43.93\00:07:47.03 its girls from brothels but it's also young boys and... 00:07:47.06\00:07:51.23 Young boys from slave labor operations 00:07:51.27\00:07:55.70 in factories and that sort of thing. 00:07:55.74\00:07:59.07 We've also funded a rescue center, 00:07:59.11\00:08:02.98 so we've fully sponsored 00:08:03.01\00:08:05.58 the three years a home in Bangalore 00:08:05.61\00:08:09.18 where these girls can go, 00:08:09.22\00:08:11.85 they're safe there, they're secure. 00:08:11.89\00:08:14.26 There's very tight security. 00:08:14.29\00:08:17.16 And we are funding that rescue home for the girls. 00:08:17.19\00:08:24.03 The second part that we're involved in is baby rescue. 00:08:24.07\00:08:28.80 Yes. 00:08:28.84\00:08:30.17 We have an Adventist gentleman 00:08:30.21\00:08:31.54 that runs a baby rescue operation in Bangalore also. 00:08:31.57\00:08:35.94 We have children that are abandoned on the streets, 00:08:35.98\00:08:39.15 are abandoned in police stations, 00:08:39.18\00:08:41.38 are abandoned at hospitals 00:08:41.42\00:08:43.99 are taken to the baby rescue center. 00:08:44.02\00:08:47.09 Very touching to visit there, 00:08:47.12\00:08:49.32 to see little babies that have been rejected 00:08:49.36\00:08:52.56 or just left somewhere. 00:08:52.59\00:08:54.73 And so, supporting that, we believe is very important. 00:08:54.76\00:08:58.80 Indeed. 00:08:58.83\00:09:00.94 The next part of the rescue program is slum rescue. 00:09:00.97\00:09:05.84 And we support the Vizag slum school. 00:09:05.87\00:09:11.78 A large amount of the children 00:09:11.81\00:09:14.15 come from very rough backgrounds. 00:09:14.18\00:09:16.92 Now, you've visited the Vizag slum school 00:09:16.95\00:09:20.06 when we were on the trip. 00:09:20.09\00:09:23.06 What were your impressions and takeouts from that visit? 00:09:23.09\00:09:27.60 Well, the visit to that slum 00:09:27.63\00:09:29.76 is something that I will never forget. 00:09:29.80\00:09:32.13 Right in the middle of this bustling city, 00:09:32.17\00:09:34.74 we walked into this place and the stench was everywhere, 00:09:34.77\00:09:39.71 the thin, frail bodies of the people who live there 00:09:39.74\00:09:42.64 who make $2 a day or less, 00:09:42.68\00:09:46.68 truly made an impression upon me. 00:09:46.72\00:09:49.58 But the thing that brought me a degree of comfort 00:09:49.62\00:09:52.55 was visiting that school that is operated 00:09:52.59\00:09:55.62 and supported by Child Impact. 00:09:55.66\00:09:58.36 Dozens of precious children are going there 00:09:58.39\00:10:01.56 to get an education 00:10:01.60\00:10:03.16 and to have the opportunity of a better future. 00:10:03.20\00:10:05.70 And an excellent example was that beautiful young lady 00:10:05.73\00:10:09.54 that you introduced me to. 00:10:09.57\00:10:11.84 She went through that school, thanks to Child Impact, 00:10:11.87\00:10:15.54 was also sponsored to go to secondary school. 00:10:15.58\00:10:18.98 And she is now studying to be a nurse, and when I asked her, 00:10:19.01\00:10:22.12 "Why do you want to be a nurse? 00:10:22.15\00:10:23.59 And where you want to go when you finish studying?" 00:10:23.62\00:10:26.76 She said, "I want to come back right here to my slum 00:10:26.79\00:10:29.52 because both of my parents have AIDS. 00:10:29.56\00:10:31.89 I want to take care of them, 00:10:31.93\00:10:33.43 and I want to take care of the people here." 00:10:33.46\00:10:36.50 Can you imagine what would happen 00:10:36.53\00:10:38.93 just in that slum without the support of Child Impact. 00:10:38.97\00:10:44.51 And that's right, and that's why our rescue program 00:10:44.54\00:10:47.48 in the slums by giving a child an education, 00:10:47.51\00:10:51.31 we're actually rescuing them 00:10:51.35\00:10:53.31 from the potential of being trafficked or sold. 00:10:53.35\00:10:56.18 That's right. 00:10:56.22\00:10:57.55 Now the fourth aspect of Operation Child Rescue 00:10:57.59\00:11:00.12 is the rescue of orphans. 00:11:00.16\00:11:02.29 Now, yes, quite often orphans are brought by family members, 00:11:02.32\00:11:06.49 but also we rescue children. 00:11:06.53\00:11:09.46 We rescue them from railway stations, 00:11:09.50\00:11:11.83 we rescue them from the streets, 00:11:11.87\00:11:13.87 and we take them to an orphanage. 00:11:13.90\00:11:16.14 Now about six or seven years ago, 00:11:16.17\00:11:18.54 we built Sunrise Home which is located in the country 00:11:18.57\00:11:22.44 in Bobbili near the blind school. 00:11:22.48\00:11:24.65 Yes. Fantastic place. 00:11:24.68\00:11:27.42 Now once again, you've visited Sunrise, 00:11:27.45\00:11:29.88 what did you think of Sunrise? 00:11:29.92\00:11:31.85 Well, I was really impressed 00:11:31.89\00:11:33.42 because they have built that place beautifully. 00:11:33.46\00:11:38.79 It is secure, it is large, 00:11:38.83\00:11:41.70 in fact, a dorm was just dedicated when we were there. 00:11:41.73\00:11:45.33 We had hundreds of people coming for worship that day, 00:11:45.37\00:11:48.00 do you remember? 00:11:48.04\00:11:49.37 Yes. 00:11:49.40\00:11:50.74 And what I can't forget 00:11:50.77\00:11:52.11 is the smiles of those children. 00:11:52.14\00:11:54.58 Those children who have been left to die in many cases. 00:11:54.61\00:12:00.45 Their families can't afford them 00:12:00.48\00:12:03.22 or there's something wrong with their health 00:12:03.25\00:12:07.46 or something else, 00:12:07.49\00:12:09.62 and they're just dumped. 00:12:09.66\00:12:11.43 And every week, children are brought 00:12:11.46\00:12:13.60 to the gates of Sunrise Home, 00:12:13.63\00:12:16.70 and there they find a place. 00:12:16.73\00:12:19.20 They find love, they find parents, 00:12:19.23\00:12:22.70 basically their spiritual parents, 00:12:22.74\00:12:25.24 the sponsors here and the teachers there. 00:12:25.27\00:12:28.78 But one of the things that really, really hit me 00:12:28.81\00:12:33.05 the hardest was to learn that the area 00:12:33.08\00:12:36.89 is surrounded by venomous snakes. 00:12:36.92\00:12:40.46 Yes. 00:12:40.49\00:12:41.82 And people get bit, 00:12:41.86\00:12:43.19 and they die all the time around there. 00:12:43.22\00:12:45.66 And yet, the director of that school told me 00:12:45.69\00:12:48.26 that not one time has there ever been a snake 00:12:48.30\00:12:51.30 found inside the orphanage. 00:12:51.33\00:12:53.60 And that tells me that angels are standing 00:12:53.64\00:12:57.41 guarding that orphanage 00:12:57.44\00:12:59.17 so that the children are not harmed by these snakes. 00:12:59.21\00:13:02.68 That speaks to the power of God and His blessing over Sunrise. 00:13:02.71\00:13:07.58 Right. 00:13:07.62\00:13:08.95 So you've heard about 00:13:08.98\00:13:10.32 the four aspects to Operation Child Rescue, 00:13:10.35\00:13:13.42 and the unique thing about Operation Child Rescue 00:13:13.46\00:13:16.83 is not that we're giving the kids 00:13:16.86\00:13:18.33 an education which we are, 00:13:18.36\00:13:20.56 it's not that we're giving the kids a home 00:13:20.60\00:13:23.37 to live which we are, 00:13:23.40\00:13:25.13 but we are rescuing them, many of them from death. 00:13:25.17\00:13:28.90 We are actually giving them life and giving them hope. 00:13:28.94\00:13:33.58 And I just hope that you would give consideration 00:13:33.61\00:13:36.64 to supporting this important project with Child Impact, 00:13:36.68\00:13:40.72 and its Operation Child Rescue. 00:13:40.75\00:13:43.79 Hi, I'm Jean Boonstra, 00:13:46.96\00:13:48.49 associate speaker at the Voice of Prophecy. 00:13:48.52\00:13:51.03 Now I'm sure that you're aware of the global problem 00:13:51.06\00:13:54.40 of human trafficking. 00:13:54.43\00:13:56.13 And in places in the world like India and Nepal for example, 00:13:56.16\00:13:59.73 this problem of human trafficking, 00:13:59.77\00:14:01.50 well, it's very real. 00:14:01.54\00:14:03.41 Not long ago, I was in India, and I learned a little bit more 00:14:03.44\00:14:06.84 about what happens in that area. 00:14:06.88\00:14:09.58 Young girls are tricked, 00:14:09.61\00:14:11.31 usually girls who are disadvantaged, 00:14:11.35\00:14:13.78 maybe from a poor village or community, 00:14:13.82\00:14:16.38 and they're tricked into becoming part 00:14:16.42\00:14:18.59 of the sex industry and into prostitution. 00:14:18.62\00:14:22.12 It's extremely sad, 00:14:22.16\00:14:24.46 and, you know, these young girls, 00:14:24.49\00:14:25.89 they're caught in a web in a lifestyle 00:14:25.93\00:14:28.40 that they don't want to be a part of. 00:14:28.43\00:14:30.63 But once they're in it, 00:14:30.67\00:14:32.07 it's very difficult to find a way out. 00:14:32.10\00:14:35.40 When we think about the problem of human trafficking, 00:14:35.44\00:14:38.14 we often think about these girls, 00:14:38.17\00:14:40.44 but it often affects young boys as well. 00:14:40.48\00:14:43.55 Young boys in India, for example, they're caught, 00:14:43.58\00:14:46.35 and they're used for child labor. 00:14:46.38\00:14:48.62 They're put into begging rings, 00:14:48.65\00:14:50.49 and they're often taken advantage of as well. 00:14:50.52\00:14:53.66 And it's not just these young girls and boys either, 00:14:53.69\00:14:56.69 this affects infants as well. 00:14:56.73\00:14:59.09 Young babies are left on the side of the road 00:14:59.13\00:15:01.63 abandoned with no one to care for them. 00:15:01.66\00:15:04.80 Child Impact International's Operation Child Rescue 00:15:04.83\00:15:08.70 addresses each of these three issues. 00:15:08.74\00:15:11.57 They have an answer, a solution, 00:15:11.61\00:15:14.01 and an opportunity to offer hope, 00:15:14.04\00:15:16.58 and a way out for these people caught in human trafficking. 00:15:16.61\00:15:20.42 At Voice of Prophecy, we are privileged to partner 00:15:20.45\00:15:23.65 with Child Impact's Operation Child Rescue 00:15:23.69\00:15:26.82 to help these young girls 00:15:26.86\00:15:28.36 that are caught in prostitution, 00:15:28.39\00:15:30.59 the young boys doing labor at a very young age, 00:15:30.63\00:15:34.06 and these young babies that simply need a home 00:15:34.10\00:15:37.50 and someone to love them. 00:15:37.53\00:15:39.23 It's our privilege to partner 00:15:39.27\00:15:40.84 with Child Impact's Operation Child Rescue 00:15:40.87\00:15:43.81 and be part of the solution to give that hope. 00:15:43.84\00:15:48.31 Now is this something that appeals to you, 00:15:48.34\00:15:51.05 and would you like to learn more about 00:15:51.08\00:15:52.68 and be a part of this. 00:15:52.71\00:15:54.45 Well, I encourage you to get in touch 00:15:54.48\00:15:56.35 with Child Impact International today. 00:15:56.38\00:15:59.32 They would love to hear from you. 00:15:59.35\00:16:02.09 Our television series Hope in Motion 00:16:02.12\00:16:04.66 has been a big success, 00:16:04.69\00:16:06.49 and we want to continue to share with you 00:16:06.53\00:16:09.16 some of the field stories 00:16:09.20\00:16:10.93 that we have filmed over the years. 00:16:10.97\00:16:13.34 So just from time to time it may refer to Asian Aid 00:16:13.37\00:16:17.64 as we reflect on these great stories 00:16:17.67\00:16:20.68 as we share them with you. 00:16:20.71\00:16:22.24 With a population of nearly 1.3 billion 00:16:39.93\00:16:42.73 and a vast majority of those people 00:16:42.76\00:16:44.53 living off of less than $2 a day, 00:16:44.57\00:16:46.84 many families in India struggle to survive. 00:16:46.87\00:16:49.27 The joy of having a baby can be tainted by the question 00:16:54.28\00:16:57.05 of how they would provide the basics of food and shelter 00:16:57.08\00:16:59.98 needed for their survival. 00:17:00.02\00:17:01.35 So if a parent loses their job or passes away, 00:17:05.95\00:17:09.02 children are abandoned as the surviving parent 00:17:09.06\00:17:11.36 or family members cannot cope emotionally 00:17:11.39\00:17:13.66 and financially with the burden. 00:17:13.70\00:17:15.43 It is estimated there are 31 million orphans 00:17:20.17\00:17:22.77 or abandoned children struggling to survive in India. 00:17:22.80\00:17:25.47 Sai Eshwari is a seven-year-old girl 00:17:43.49\00:17:45.89 studying in the first grade 00:17:45.93\00:17:47.33 at the Seventh-day Adventist school 00:17:47.36\00:17:49.20 in the outskirts of Hyderabad in South India. 00:17:49.23\00:17:52.33 Her home is just a few feet away from her classroom. 00:17:52.37\00:17:55.27 This is Elim Home, an orphanage established by the church 00:17:55.30\00:17:58.84 and supported by Child Impact International. 00:17:58.87\00:18:01.74 Although, not an orphan, 00:18:01.78\00:18:03.11 circumstances forced her to be brought to Elim Home. 00:18:03.14\00:18:06.05 Malathi, the director and house mother of Elim Home, 00:18:09.45\00:18:12.72 took Sai Eshwari in after a chance meeting with her aunt 00:18:12.75\00:18:15.92 after church on the Sabbath day. 00:18:15.96\00:18:18.69 One day, when I went to church, 00:18:18.73\00:18:20.96 one of our church members by the name Ruthamma, 00:18:21.00\00:18:24.53 she asked me that she want to talk with me, 00:18:24.57\00:18:27.04 and she said that she needs some help. 00:18:27.07\00:18:29.84 I told her she can come any time she wishes to meet me. 00:18:29.87\00:18:35.78 Then the next day, Sunday, 00:18:35.81\00:18:37.28 she came along with Madhu and her daughter. 00:18:37.31\00:18:42.58 Madhu was married when she was just 16. 00:18:42.62\00:18:45.45 Although such practices are unlawful, 00:18:45.49\00:18:47.66 customs and social traditions dictate life in rural India, 00:18:47.69\00:18:50.79 especially Mangapur. 00:18:50.83\00:18:52.99 After two months of her marriage, 00:18:53.03\00:18:54.83 her husband and his parents sent her home to get dowry. 00:18:54.86\00:18:58.03 Madhu's parents were unable to pay their demands, 00:18:58.07\00:19:00.64 and when her husband's family found out she was pregnant, 00:19:00.67\00:19:03.44 they refused to take her back. 00:19:03.47\00:19:05.87 The following year, Madhu gave birth to her daughter, 00:19:05.91\00:19:08.84 Sai Eshwari. 00:19:08.88\00:19:10.98 Soon her situation at home began to get worse. 00:19:11.01\00:19:13.88 Her mother and her brother forced her to worship idols 00:19:13.92\00:19:16.58 and began to resent her presence at home. 00:19:16.62\00:19:19.12 She was becoming a financial burden to them 00:19:19.15\00:19:21.46 and decided to take matters in their own hands. 00:19:21.49\00:19:26.06 Without any reason, my brother and my mother 00:19:26.09\00:19:28.46 asked me to leave the house. 00:19:28.50\00:19:30.77 They told me we had fed you enough 00:19:30.80\00:19:32.93 and told me I was a burden on them. 00:19:32.97\00:19:35.64 When I refused to leave the house, 00:19:35.67\00:19:37.74 my brother hit me on my arm, 00:19:37.77\00:19:39.87 and my mother punched me on my face. 00:19:39.91\00:19:43.78 Fearing her daughter's safety and that of her own, 00:19:43.81\00:19:46.21 Madhu came to Hyderabad to seek refuge at her aunt's place. 00:19:46.25\00:19:50.69 After I heard Madhu's story and her pathetic condition, 00:19:50.72\00:19:54.89 I decided to take Sai Eshwari inside 00:19:54.92\00:19:57.46 because though it is an home for taking desperate children 00:19:57.49\00:20:01.20 and mostly the orphan children, 00:20:01.23\00:20:03.47 but still I took a decision that I should take Sai Eshwari 00:20:03.50\00:20:07.60 because being a female, 00:20:07.64\00:20:09.70 I felt that I should help another female, 00:20:09.74\00:20:12.97 small girl who is in need, 00:20:13.01\00:20:15.31 and I also heard that she is getting 00:20:15.34\00:20:17.58 only one meal a day, 00:20:17.61\00:20:19.31 and I thought that she should be in this home. 00:20:19.35\00:20:24.39 And it's not just people who are orphans 00:20:24.42\00:20:26.86 whose parents are dead, 00:20:26.89\00:20:28.22 you might have people who might have 00:20:28.26\00:20:30.46 one parent or two parents, 00:20:30.49\00:20:31.86 but then, they just do not earn enough money 00:20:31.89\00:20:36.43 to support a family, 00:20:36.46\00:20:37.83 so they really abandon kids anyhow. 00:20:37.87\00:20:41.27 So it's extreme poverty also puts kids into the bracket 00:20:41.30\00:20:46.04 that need help and need help desperately 00:20:46.07\00:20:48.68 and need help now, not in 10 years time 00:20:48.71\00:20:51.65 because they won't survive 10 years, 00:20:51.68\00:20:53.88 so that's what orphanages do, 00:20:53.92\00:20:55.52 they get the children who really need help 00:20:55.55\00:20:58.59 and don't have anyone to help them. 00:20:58.62\00:21:02.99 I guess most often we think that orphanage means 00:21:03.02\00:21:05.39 they have no parents, 00:21:05.43\00:21:07.00 but in the case of some, there may be a single parent, 00:21:07.03\00:21:11.53 but the driving force can be poverty. 00:21:11.57\00:21:14.67 The reality is that the single parent, 00:21:14.70\00:21:17.01 perhaps like Madhu, simply can't cope 00:21:17.04\00:21:20.04 because of their circumstances that trapped in poverty. 00:21:20.08\00:21:23.61 And so the orphanage gives them hope for their child, 00:21:23.65\00:21:28.05 give something that they could never deliver for their child 00:21:28.08\00:21:32.12 and that makes a huge difference. 00:21:32.15\00:21:36.12 Madhu with the help of her aunt, Ruthamma, 00:21:36.16\00:21:38.73 found a job at a local hospital, 00:21:38.76\00:21:40.80 cleaning the hospital floor and doing other menial jobs. 00:21:40.83\00:21:43.87 She told us she earns 80 to 100 rupees a day, 00:21:43.90\00:21:47.14 less than $2, hardly enough 00:21:47.17\00:21:48.97 to provide her three meals a day. 00:21:49.00\00:21:51.21 Her hardship was revealed to us 00:21:51.24\00:21:53.27 when we went to see where she lived. 00:21:53.31\00:21:55.18 One can only imagine a situation 00:21:55.21\00:21:57.05 where Madhu had to take care of her daughter, Sai Eshwari, 00:21:57.08\00:22:00.48 in a place where there's hardly a proper roof over the head, 00:22:00.52\00:22:03.59 a vulnerable place for a vulnerable young woman. 00:22:03.62\00:22:06.92 In spite of all her hardship and vulnerability, 00:22:06.96\00:22:09.69 Madhu considers herself fortunate 00:22:09.72\00:22:11.83 because her daughter now has a safe place to grow up. 00:22:11.86\00:22:15.70 If I would not have taken the decision, 00:22:15.73\00:22:17.77 the mother would have recovered from her health, 00:22:17.80\00:22:21.67 then afterwards, she would have taken this girl 00:22:21.70\00:22:23.87 also as a child labor here and there 00:22:23.91\00:22:26.24 to some houses as a labor 00:22:26.27\00:22:28.48 because we have taken her and Sai Eshwari 00:22:28.51\00:22:30.98 is very fortunate and she's a very bright girl, 00:22:31.01\00:22:33.85 and she always stands first in the class, 00:22:33.88\00:22:36.38 and she has improved a lot. 00:22:36.42\00:22:40.39 I'm thankful to God 00:22:40.42\00:22:41.76 for the help my daughter is receiving right now. 00:22:41.79\00:22:44.33 All this is because I refused to worship idols 00:22:44.36\00:22:47.66 and I worship the true God. 00:22:47.70\00:22:49.56 God has been very gracious to me and my daughter. 00:22:49.60\00:22:52.50 I'm thankful to the sponsors who are supporting her. 00:22:52.53\00:22:56.81 Because of the timely intervention of Malathi, 00:22:56.84\00:22:59.47 Sai Eshwari can now grow up 00:22:59.51\00:23:01.14 in a safe and loving home at Elim 00:23:01.18\00:23:03.65 and Child Impact Sponsorship is giving children 00:23:03.68\00:23:06.28 like Sai Eshwari and the 137 other children 00:23:06.31\00:23:09.72 at Elim Home the financial support 00:23:09.75\00:23:11.72 to grow up in this environment. 00:23:11.75\00:23:13.96 This support is not just 00:23:13.99\00:23:15.32 getting children out of desperate situations, 00:23:15.36\00:23:17.69 but it's also having a wider impact in the community. 00:23:17.73\00:23:20.63 Padma works as a cook at Elim Home. 00:23:29.60\00:23:31.71 Her children, Priyanjali and Akash, 00:23:31.74\00:23:34.28 live here and go to school next door 00:23:34.31\00:23:36.24 just like Sai Eshwari. 00:23:36.28\00:23:37.98 Her eldest son is also sponsored by Child Impact 00:23:38.01\00:23:41.25 and goes to an Adventist Boarding School in Nuzvid, 00:23:41.28\00:23:44.35 a few hours from Hyderabad. 00:23:44.39\00:23:46.59 Not long ago, Padma lived a content life 00:23:46.62\00:23:49.09 in her native town with her family 00:23:49.12\00:23:50.93 until a tragic incident brought her crushing down. 00:23:50.96\00:23:55.23 My husband found a job in the Gulf as a daily laborer, 00:23:55.26\00:23:58.80 and after two years, he was coming back home. 00:23:58.83\00:24:01.47 We were all waiting for him. 00:24:01.50\00:24:03.17 On the way back from the airport, 00:24:03.20\00:24:04.81 he met with an accident. 00:24:04.84\00:24:06.68 Padma's husband died on the spot, 00:24:15.85\00:24:17.79 and his death not only brought the tag of being called a widow 00:24:17.82\00:24:20.96 but it also brought her financial difficulties. 00:24:20.99\00:24:23.93 All her relatives and neighbors who cared for her, 00:24:23.96\00:24:26.19 after her husband's death, slowly began to desert her. 00:24:26.23\00:24:29.76 She doesn't blame them. 00:24:29.80\00:24:31.13 "How can they help me and my three children forever?" 00:24:31.17\00:24:33.74 she asks. 00:24:33.77\00:24:35.10 Although her three children receive 00:24:35.14\00:24:36.47 Child Impact Sponsorship for their tuition, 00:24:36.50\00:24:39.07 she was finding it hard to take care of their basic needs 00:24:39.11\00:24:42.04 such as a decent meal a day. 00:24:42.08\00:24:45.45 There were three kids, 00:24:45.48\00:24:48.15 and she has no one to raise the kids, 00:24:48.18\00:24:50.29 she is all alone, she was broken, 00:24:50.32\00:24:51.85 because her husband died in a car accident. 00:24:51.89\00:24:55.19 And immediately, we thought maybe Asian 00:24:55.22\00:24:57.73 should definitely pick... 00:24:57.76\00:25:00.03 Should come forward to help such, 00:25:00.06\00:25:01.40 you know, family was in desperately 00:25:01.43\00:25:02.80 need of educating the children. 00:25:02.83\00:25:05.10 Then that's how I got to meet her 00:25:05.13\00:25:06.63 and got to know more about her, 00:25:06.67\00:25:08.24 you know, her family story, how her husband died, 00:25:08.27\00:25:10.54 and what she's looking for the kids. 00:25:10.57\00:25:14.94 After he heard Padma's story, 00:25:14.98\00:25:16.71 Ravi, field officer for Child Impact 00:25:16.75\00:25:19.21 brought her to Elim Home 00:25:19.25\00:25:20.75 and her three children were taken into the orphanage 00:25:20.78\00:25:23.08 and given shelter. 00:25:23.12\00:25:24.65 Fortunately, for Padma, 00:25:24.69\00:25:26.05 she found a job as a cook in the kitchen. 00:25:26.09\00:25:29.09 In Indian setup, if the husband dies, 00:25:29.12\00:25:31.46 a female has to face a lot of problems, 00:25:31.49\00:25:34.53 especially educating her children 00:25:34.56\00:25:36.77 and providing them meals 00:25:36.80\00:25:38.63 and provide all their needs is very hard. 00:25:38.67\00:25:42.74 If we would not have given her job, 00:25:42.77\00:25:45.84 she would have gone out for fields 00:25:45.87\00:25:48.24 or work somewhere 00:25:48.28\00:25:49.61 or sometime she would have sent her eldest son for work also. 00:25:49.64\00:25:53.48 And she might not have any peace of mind, 00:25:53.52\00:25:56.89 and she might also face 00:25:56.92\00:25:58.29 so many problems in the society. 00:25:58.32\00:26:01.82 Yes, we are a child-focused organization, 00:26:01.86\00:26:04.83 but because we're in the field, 00:26:04.86\00:26:06.36 because we're talking to people, 00:26:06.39\00:26:09.23 we do help the wider community. 00:26:09.26\00:26:12.27 For instance, we gave the widow hope by working in the kitchen. 00:26:12.30\00:26:16.34 We also have given 00:26:16.37\00:26:18.14 some of our previous orphanage children responsibilities, 00:26:18.17\00:26:22.74 and they're now field workers. 00:26:22.78\00:26:24.58 So we're making a difference in the wider community. 00:26:24.61\00:26:28.08 When you travel across India, 00:26:31.19\00:26:32.89 it becomes more evident that there are so many people 00:26:32.92\00:26:35.52 including lay members of our church 00:26:35.56\00:26:37.63 struggling to send their children to school. 00:26:37.66\00:26:40.90 Many of our members not able to send their children 00:26:40.93\00:26:43.60 to the Christian schools, 00:26:43.63\00:26:45.00 and these member children are coming into our schools 00:26:45.03\00:26:47.87 because of Asian Aid, 00:26:47.90\00:26:49.24 they are being supported and they're trained. 00:26:49.27\00:26:51.17 Tomorrow, definitely, they are our hope 00:26:51.21\00:26:53.58 and workers for the church. 00:26:53.61\00:26:55.04 I'm really thankful to the philanthropic people 00:26:55.08\00:26:57.41 who are supporting these children 00:26:57.45\00:26:58.78 to be educated and get Christian education. 00:26:58.81\00:27:01.02 I'm very thankful for Elim Home and the sponsors. 00:27:06.45\00:27:10.43 I'm also grateful to Mr. Ravi who introduced me to Elim Home. 00:27:10.46\00:27:15.46 I'm an Adventist but before coming here, 00:27:15.50\00:27:18.63 I didn't know that church had organizations like this 00:27:18.67\00:27:21.60 that helps children in desperate situations. 00:27:21.64\00:27:25.27 I know about Asian Aid, 00:27:25.31\00:27:27.11 but I didn't know they supported orphanages. 00:27:27.14\00:27:30.15 God has opened the doors for me and my children. 00:27:30.18\00:27:33.42 There are so many other widows like me who are suffering. 00:27:33.45\00:27:37.09 I remember all of them in my prayers 00:27:37.12\00:27:39.15 because I feel I'm very fortunate. 00:27:39.19\00:27:42.99 Today, orphanages like Elim Home 00:27:43.02\00:27:45.13 are not only fulfilling its mission 00:27:45.16\00:27:46.90 to reach out to orphan children, 00:27:46.93\00:27:48.76 but as we found out today 00:27:48.80\00:27:50.37 and thanks to Child Impact International, 00:27:50.40\00:27:52.73 it is also reaching out to children 00:27:52.77\00:27:54.60 from impoverished and unfortunate backgrounds 00:27:54.64\00:27:57.27 by providing them a safe place to live and learn. 00:27:57.31\00:28:00.51 In turn, these children 00:28:00.54\00:28:01.88 not only receive a good Christian education, 00:28:01.91\00:28:04.25 but they grow up to be strong pillars for the church. 00:28:04.28\00:28:06.82
