Child Impact International is an organization giving hope, 00:00:14.24\00:00:18.18 previously called Asian Aid. 00:00:18.21\00:00:20.12 Child Impact International is an organization fostering 00:00:20.15\00:00:23.49 permanent positive change 00:00:23.52\00:00:25.05 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:25.09\00:00:27.16 and their communities. 00:00:27.19\00:00:28.79 Child Impact is committed to making a difference 00:00:28.82\00:00:31.29 in the lives of children and those who are in need, 00:00:31.33\00:00:34.20 serving communities in India, 00:00:34.23\00:00:35.73 Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, 00:00:35.76\00:00:39.13 and will soon expand to other countries. 00:00:39.17\00:00:41.44 For the last 50 years, 00:00:41.47\00:00:43.04 Child Impact has invested in the futures of people 00:00:43.07\00:00:46.01 and their investment has proven infinite returns, 00:00:46.04\00:00:48.98 driven by the dedication 00:00:49.01\00:00:50.35 to helping those who have the least. 00:00:50.38\00:00:52.51 Child Impact is an organization focused 00:00:52.55\00:00:54.98 on the welfare of children 00:00:55.02\00:00:56.75 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:56.79\00:00:59.15 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:00:59.19\00:01:01.32 Their outreach expands from child rescue operations 00:01:01.36\00:01:04.36 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:01:04.39\00:01:07.33 and the blind children, 00:01:07.36\00:01:08.70 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:01:08.73\00:01:11.57 But above all, Child Impact is an organization giving hope, 00:01:11.60\00:01:15.44 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:01:15.47\00:01:18.71 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:01:18.74\00:01:21.61 This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:21.64\00:01:25.81 Hi, my name is Jaime Jorge, 00:01:25.85\00:01:28.08 and I'm excited to be an honorary ambassador 00:01:28.12\00:01:30.82 for Child Impact International. 00:01:30.85\00:01:33.15 I've had the privilege of visiting India 00:01:33.19\00:01:36.06 and Myanmar with Child Impact 00:01:36.09\00:01:38.69 and I'm here to share with you 00:01:38.73\00:01:40.86 some very exciting stories 00:01:40.90\00:01:42.90 as well as some important information. 00:01:42.93\00:01:45.70 Now I have with me Jim, 00:01:45.73\00:01:47.07 the CEO of what used to be Asian Aid. 00:01:47.10\00:01:50.47 Jim, how long have you been with this organization 00:01:50.51\00:01:53.88 and why the change to Child Impact International? 00:01:53.91\00:01:58.08 Well, Jaime, I've been in the role of CEO 00:01:58.11\00:02:00.85 for just over 10 years now. 00:02:00.88\00:02:03.55 And this was a big decision for us. 00:02:03.59\00:02:07.69 But the key reasons 00:02:07.72\00:02:09.22 why, is, a lot of people don't realize 00:02:09.26\00:02:12.53 that India and Bangladesh or Asia, 00:02:12.56\00:02:15.70 there's a lot of confusion as to what Asia is. 00:02:15.73\00:02:18.87 And a lot of the Asian countries 00:02:18.90\00:02:20.64 are indoor countries we don't operate in. 00:02:20.67\00:02:25.01 Secondly, we want to show a difference between Asian Aid, 00:02:25.04\00:02:29.14 Australia and Child Impact, 00:02:29.18\00:02:31.65 because we are two 00:02:31.68\00:02:33.92 totally separate organizations. 00:02:33.95\00:02:37.75 We also believe 00:02:37.79\00:02:39.65 that we should grow outside Asia. 00:02:39.69\00:02:42.46 So the name change gives us the ability 00:02:42.49\00:02:45.59 that when we're ready to grow into other countries. 00:02:45.63\00:02:49.16 But most important, the name reflects what we do. 00:02:49.20\00:02:53.10 The name reflects 00:02:53.13\00:02:54.50 that we're impacting on the lives of children. 00:02:54.54\00:02:57.51 So we think it's far more relevant 00:02:57.54\00:02:59.81 and will support our growth strategy. 00:02:59.84\00:03:02.61 Now I've had the privilege of knowing you 00:03:02.64\00:03:04.65 and working with you now for a number of years, 00:03:04.68\00:03:07.52 and I have seen 00:03:07.55\00:03:09.05 how much this organization has grown in that time. 00:03:09.08\00:03:13.05 Can you tell me where you're from originally? 00:03:13.09\00:03:15.12 You have kind of a different accent 00:03:15.16\00:03:17.33 and what you use to do 00:03:17.36\00:03:18.69 before coming to now Child Impact International? 00:03:18.73\00:03:21.53 Well, I'm a New Zealander and I married an American lady 00:03:21.56\00:03:26.10 from Tennessee. 00:03:26.13\00:03:28.00 And originally she was to move to New Zealand, which she did. 00:03:28.04\00:03:32.07 But just somehow, we ended up back in Tennessee. 00:03:32.11\00:03:35.14 But prior to that for 30 years, 00:03:35.18\00:03:37.91 I own the largest promotional 00:03:37.95\00:03:40.78 marketing company in New Zealand. 00:03:40.82\00:03:43.08 So although I had a wee bit to do 00:03:43.12\00:03:44.75 with promoting organizations and companies, 00:03:44.79\00:03:48.46 and also marketing. 00:03:48.49\00:03:50.09 So that was my background. 00:03:50.13\00:03:52.09 And then when I came to the States, 00:03:52.13\00:03:54.23 I got asked to be put on the board 00:03:54.26\00:03:56.60 of what was then Asian Aid. 00:03:56.63\00:03:59.30 And so I took a six-month contract 00:03:59.33\00:04:01.87 to restructure Asian Aid at the time. 00:04:01.90\00:04:04.91 Well, I'm 10 years into that six-month contract. 00:04:04.94\00:04:08.51 Well, and it's made a huge difference 00:04:08.54\00:04:10.11 for this organization. 00:04:10.15\00:04:11.71 Can you tell me what some of your future plans are? 00:04:11.75\00:04:16.02 Well, I think the key plan 00:04:16.05\00:04:17.92 is to grow our sponsorship program. 00:04:17.95\00:04:20.96 As you know we sponsor children in a number of countries, 00:04:20.99\00:04:25.93 very large in India, Bangladesh, and now Myanmar. 00:04:25.96\00:04:29.73 And Myanmar is the old Burma. 00:04:29.76\00:04:32.00 We're also in Nepal and Sri Lanka. 00:04:32.03\00:04:34.87 And that sponsorship program takes a child 00:04:34.90\00:04:37.64 based on need and puts them in an Adventist Mission School. 00:04:37.67\00:04:42.11 And I have to be honest with you, 00:04:42.14\00:04:43.55 the need is overwhelming. 00:04:43.58\00:04:45.45 The churches continually coming to us and saying, 00:04:45.48\00:04:49.02 "Can you help us with more children?" 00:04:49.05\00:04:51.62 And so the growth of that sponsorship program 00:04:51.65\00:04:55.26 is key for us moving forward. 00:04:55.29\00:04:57.29 Yes. 00:04:57.33\00:04:58.66 Because it not only impacts on the life of the child, 00:04:58.69\00:05:02.13 it impacts on their family, but it's also key funding 00:05:02.16\00:05:06.53 for these Adventist Mission Schools. 00:05:06.57\00:05:09.20 So sponsoring a child has a big impact 00:05:09.24\00:05:12.87 on the number aspects of the child, 00:05:12.91\00:05:15.68 its family and the school. 00:05:15.71\00:05:18.08 And to be honest, the need is overwhelming. 00:05:18.11\00:05:20.82 Yes. 00:05:20.85\00:05:22.25 We also support four orphanages, 00:05:22.28\00:05:25.15 school for the blind, 00:05:25.19\00:05:26.52 and a school for the deaf in India. 00:05:26.55\00:05:29.46 And the other important area 00:05:29.49\00:05:31.33 that we're starting to get involved 00:05:31.36\00:05:33.23 in is a program that we have called 00:05:33.26\00:05:36.23 "Operation Child Rescue," 00:05:36.26\00:05:39.47 trafficking of girls, 00:05:39.50\00:05:41.20 the use of boys in beggary 00:05:41.24\00:05:43.07 and slave labor. 00:05:43.10\00:05:45.74 To be honest, in India, 00:05:45.77\00:05:47.11 it's so huge, it's just overpowering. 00:05:47.14\00:05:50.75 But we're so excited 00:05:50.78\00:05:52.11 that we can be one of the ministries involved 00:05:52.15\00:05:55.48 in this program. 00:05:55.52\00:05:56.85 So we want to build that program also. 00:05:56.89\00:05:59.29 Yes. 00:05:59.32\00:06:00.66 Well, I've been with you to Myanmar, 00:06:00.69\00:06:02.02 where I saw 00:06:02.06\00:06:03.39 that children attend the schools there, 00:06:03.43\00:06:07.00 and then they come back home and share the Gospel 00:06:07.03\00:06:09.26 with their families 00:06:09.30\00:06:10.63 and their families are being baptized. 00:06:10.67\00:06:12.00 And this is in a country 00:06:12.03\00:06:13.37 where you can't do public evangelism. 00:06:13.40\00:06:15.20 So this is truly a number 00:06:15.24\00:06:17.27 of different outreach opportunities 00:06:17.31\00:06:19.67 to get people to learn about Jesus Christ. 00:06:19.71\00:06:22.51 Now what does this mean, this change, this growth, 00:06:22.54\00:06:26.92 this vision for the current donors 00:06:26.95\00:06:29.58 of Child Impact International 00:06:29.62\00:06:31.32 and the perspective new ones 00:06:31.35\00:06:32.95 that maybe thinking about coming on board? 00:06:32.99\00:06:35.62 Well, to begin with the existing donors, 00:06:35.66\00:06:38.26 nothing really changes. 00:06:38.29\00:06:41.63 We're still located in Ottawa, 00:06:41.66\00:06:44.10 in Tennessee near Chattanooga. 00:06:44.13\00:06:47.17 We still retain the same staff, we retain the same policies, 00:06:47.20\00:06:51.71 the same board, 00:06:51.74\00:06:53.31 but we want to do things better. 00:06:53.34\00:06:55.74 We want to represent the children better. 00:06:55.78\00:06:58.25 We want to increase the communication 00:06:58.28\00:07:00.88 between the child and the projects we do 00:07:00.92\00:07:03.75 with the donor. 00:07:03.79\00:07:05.12 So the use of mobile phone technology, 00:07:05.15\00:07:07.82 the use of Facebook, 00:07:07.86\00:07:09.66 and we want to share the stories with those people 00:07:09.69\00:07:13.03 that are supporting us. 00:07:13.06\00:07:14.63 So we want to step up how we support the children, 00:07:14.66\00:07:19.03 but also deliver value to the donors. 00:07:19.07\00:07:22.84 Asian Aid is now Child Impact International. 00:07:22.87\00:07:26.07 And what is going to happen is simply fantastic. 00:07:26.11\00:07:30.25 More young people are going to come to know Jesus Christ. 00:07:30.28\00:07:33.82 They're gonna have hope in the future 00:07:33.85\00:07:35.62 and you have the opportunity to be a part of it. 00:07:35.65\00:07:38.25 Would you join us? 00:07:38.29\00:07:40.82 Imagine with me for a moment 00:07:40.86\00:07:42.79 that you are small child living on the streets of India, 00:07:42.82\00:07:45.83 the sandals on your feet lost their comfort weeks ago, 00:07:45.86\00:07:49.50 your favorite shirt just got another hole. 00:07:49.53\00:07:52.27 It's sad. 00:07:52.30\00:07:53.64 Mummy died last year, 00:07:53.67\00:07:55.00 but what makes you feel even worse 00:07:55.04\00:07:57.04 is that your dad chose not to be your dad anymore? 00:07:57.07\00:08:01.04 Hey, I'm Shawn Boonstra, 00:08:01.08\00:08:02.44 honorary ambassador for Child Impact International, 00:08:02.48\00:08:05.68 an organization that is a supportive ministry 00:08:05.71\00:08:08.12 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:08:08.15\00:08:10.39 You know, previously called Asian Aid, 00:08:10.42\00:08:12.95 they are making an exciting change 00:08:12.99\00:08:14.72 to Child Impact International in order to grow. 00:08:14.76\00:08:18.46 Something like 15 to 25 million little girls 00:08:18.49\00:08:21.46 and boys in India 00:08:21.50\00:08:22.83 share similar stories to the one I just told you. 00:08:22.86\00:08:26.00 Many are orphaned at a young age 00:08:26.03\00:08:27.57 with little food to eat and no hope. 00:08:27.60\00:08:30.87 Child Impact serves to bridge 00:08:30.91\00:08:32.41 the gap between hardship and education. 00:08:32.44\00:08:36.24 It's a unique ministry that serves children in poverty 00:08:36.28\00:08:39.15 in Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Sri Lanka. 00:08:39.18\00:08:44.29 Over 3,500 children are provided 00:08:44.32\00:08:47.79 an Adventist education and lives are changed 00:08:47.82\00:08:50.86 through the numerous development projects. 00:08:50.89\00:08:53.50 Working in these countries, 00:08:53.53\00:08:55.33 Child Impact has come face to face with issues 00:08:55.36\00:08:58.03 like child slavery, poor or no education, 00:08:58.07\00:09:01.94 child trafficking, 00:09:01.97\00:09:03.41 abandon babies, lack of clean water, 00:09:03.44\00:09:06.98 and a high number of orphans. 00:09:07.01\00:09:09.01 This list is not short on challenges, 00:09:09.04\00:09:12.05 yet the needs are being met. 00:09:12.08\00:09:14.22 You know, my family sponsors Sheela, 00:09:14.25\00:09:16.05 a young lady 00:09:16.08\00:09:17.42 at the Sunrise Orphanage in India. 00:09:17.45\00:09:19.42 For the past couple of years, 00:09:19.45\00:09:21.09 I'm proud of how my family 00:09:21.12\00:09:22.86 has been able to impact her life 00:09:22.89\00:09:24.93 for the better or it has it, she just started college. 00:09:24.96\00:09:29.93 What I've come to understand 00:09:29.96\00:09:31.90 is that the children Child Impact supports 00:09:31.93\00:09:35.10 are more than just names 00:09:35.14\00:09:36.50 or faces on a screen or a flyer. 00:09:36.54\00:09:39.37 They are people with a story, 00:09:39.41\00:09:42.18 a story whose ending has not been written, 00:09:42.21\00:09:45.41 instead another chapter is being composed. 00:09:45.45\00:09:49.15 It reminds me of something that Jesus once said. 00:09:49.18\00:09:51.69 "What ever you do 00:09:51.72\00:09:53.05 for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, 00:09:53.09\00:09:55.86 you do for me." 00:09:55.89\00:09:58.16 Join me and others like me throughout the world 00:09:58.19\00:10:01.63 who are sponsoring a child monthly 00:10:01.66\00:10:03.97 to provide like Jesus did, 00:10:04.00\00:10:05.93 to support like Jesus did, to love like Jesus did. 00:10:05.97\00:10:10.67 You too can make a lifelong impact 00:10:10.71\00:10:13.01 on the life of someone 00:10:13.04\00:10:14.38 who was waiting for you to say yes. 00:10:14.41\00:10:16.81 Yes, today you 00:10:16.85\00:10:18.18 will consider sponsorship right now 00:10:18.21\00:10:20.32 with Child Impact or one of our other projects. 00:10:20.35\00:10:23.32 Yes, to give hope to a precious child today. 00:10:23.35\00:10:27.19 Our television series, 00:10:30.29\00:10:31.66 Hope in Motion has been a big success. 00:10:31.69\00:10:34.73 And we want to continue to share with you 00:10:34.76\00:10:37.47 some of the field stories 00:10:37.50\00:10:39.23 that we have filmed over the years. 00:10:39.27\00:10:41.50 So just from time to time, it may refer to Asian Aid 00:10:41.54\00:10:45.84 as we reflect on these great stories 00:10:45.87\00:10:48.91 as we share them with you. 00:10:48.94\00:10:50.45 The beautiful landscapes, 00:10:58.65\00:11:00.46 its people, the colors and customs, 00:11:00.49\00:11:03.02 that's India in a nutshell. 00:11:03.06\00:11:04.89 Child Impact International 00:11:14.80\00:11:16.60 has been working in this vast land 00:11:16.64\00:11:18.51 since its very beginning, which is over 50 years now. 00:11:18.54\00:11:22.11 Primarily focused on child sponsorship, 00:11:22.14\00:11:24.88 Child Impact also has been instrumental 00:11:24.91\00:11:27.32 in building many children's homes and schools 00:11:27.35\00:11:29.88 to complement its sponsorship program. 00:11:29.92\00:11:32.45 The Immanuel English School in Jeypore 00:11:32.49\00:11:34.86 in the state of Orissa is one such school 00:11:34.89\00:11:37.33 that has undergone a transformation. 00:11:37.36\00:11:40.40 We just feel surprised how the things have changed. 00:11:40.43\00:11:45.87 Everything was just like the hill that you see behind, 00:11:45.90\00:11:51.11 full of bushes and unwanted plants. 00:11:51.14\00:11:54.44 So nobody from town ever thought 00:11:54.48\00:11:57.51 that there can be something here, 00:11:57.55\00:12:00.52 but God has blessed this place 00:12:00.55\00:12:02.85 and we can see a great change. 00:12:02.88\00:12:07.49 Starting with around 50 children 00:12:07.52\00:12:09.32 and few staff, all under just one building, 00:12:09.36\00:12:12.33 the school has now developed into an expansive campus. 00:12:12.36\00:12:16.46 The larger facility made it possible to bring 00:12:16.50\00:12:18.90 in more children from the tribal communities 00:12:18.93\00:12:21.27 as well as nearby villages. 00:12:21.30\00:12:23.34 As the news of the new facility spread, 00:12:23.37\00:12:25.64 many more children from Adventist 00:12:25.67\00:12:27.54 and non-Adventist families desire 00:12:27.58\00:12:29.78 to be educated at the new school. 00:12:29.81\00:12:31.55 Many in rural India, struggle to earn $2 a day. 00:12:36.02\00:12:39.72 Their only way of earning 00:12:39.75\00:12:41.09 a living is grazing their livestock 00:12:41.12\00:12:43.02 or working in the fields. 00:12:43.06\00:12:44.83 Here poverty passes 00:12:44.86\00:12:46.29 on from generation to generation 00:12:46.33\00:12:48.86 and education is not an option. 00:12:48.90\00:12:51.37 I mean, some parts of India 00:12:51.40\00:12:52.73 really seem to be growing and really, 00:12:52.77\00:12:54.70 you know, India seems to be really coming up 00:12:54.74\00:12:56.57 as I say, 00:12:56.60\00:12:57.94 but when you go to the villages and the slums, 00:12:57.97\00:13:00.58 they have not improved in all the years 00:13:00.61\00:13:03.08 that, you know, that I've been coming to India 00:13:03.11\00:13:04.78 which is now more than 30 years. 00:13:04.81\00:13:07.28 You know, when you go to the villages, 00:13:07.32\00:13:08.65 and you see into some of the slums 00:13:08.68\00:13:10.42 and you see how bad, 00:13:10.45\00:13:12.32 you know, the conditions are that the people 00:13:12.35\00:13:14.12 and the children are living under. 00:13:14.16\00:13:15.79 Because often, 00:13:15.82\00:13:17.16 it's not that they don't want to work, 00:13:17.19\00:13:18.53 but there's just not enough work available. 00:13:18.56\00:13:22.26 Although, a majority of them 00:13:22.30\00:13:23.63 can not afford to send their children to school, 00:13:23.67\00:13:26.23 they do view education as a catalyst for change. 00:13:26.27\00:13:29.87 Sixty to seventy percent, 00:13:29.90\00:13:31.41 we are dependent on the sponsorship 00:13:31.44\00:13:36.24 because majority of this children are poor 00:13:36.28\00:13:39.58 and they don't have any support. 00:13:39.61\00:13:44.89 Without the support of any sponsorship, 00:13:44.92\00:13:48.02 those children would not be here. 00:13:48.06\00:13:50.99 Today, about 2600 children in India 00:13:51.03\00:13:53.86 are sponsored by Child Impact 00:13:53.90\00:13:55.93 and because of their commitment to the welfare of children, 00:13:55.96\00:13:58.87 especially children from tribal communities 00:13:58.90\00:14:01.14 and villages, these children are reaping 00:14:01.17\00:14:03.61 the benefits of an Adventist education. 00:14:03.64\00:14:07.08 Devoki Moharia, 00:14:07.11\00:14:08.44 a science teacher at the Immanuel English School 00:14:08.48\00:14:10.75 was a former student here. 00:14:10.78\00:14:13.21 I finished my BSc degree in college 00:14:13.25\00:14:16.89 and I'm very much interested in science 00:14:16.92\00:14:19.22 because I was good at science. 00:14:19.25\00:14:22.12 In this school, I teach mostly 8th, 9th, 10th. 00:14:22.16\00:14:25.99 I teach them chemistry and biology. 00:14:26.03\00:14:29.66 Devoki was one among the first batch of children 00:14:29.70\00:14:32.40 to be brought to the school from neighboring villages 00:14:32.43\00:14:34.80 when Helen Eager and some of the staff 00:14:34.84\00:14:36.84 from the school visited these villages. 00:14:36.87\00:14:39.41 I sent messages to the church pastors, 00:14:39.44\00:14:43.61 if there are any children from poverty level 00:14:43.65\00:14:47.48 and wherever there are no schools. 00:14:47.52\00:14:50.22 So many names came from different churches, 00:14:50.25\00:14:55.72 then first I went to some orphan children, 00:14:55.76\00:14:59.49 then I came to know that there are two girls, 00:14:59.53\00:15:03.00 very small girls nearby Kotpat town, 00:15:03.03\00:15:06.53 so I went there and I met 00:15:06.57\00:15:09.50 with her father, Devoki. 00:15:09.54\00:15:13.14 Then her father 00:15:13.17\00:15:15.68 was not willing to send the girl here 00:15:15.71\00:15:18.88 because there was no boundary around, 00:15:18.91\00:15:21.15 and there was only one building built 00:15:21.18\00:15:23.85 by Asian Aid. 00:15:23.89\00:15:25.52 Then when I went, 00:15:25.55\00:15:26.89 she was the smallest among the two. 00:15:26.92\00:15:30.06 Then she started crying not to take photo. 00:15:30.09\00:15:33.43 I carried her, I gave her a chocolate. 00:15:33.46\00:15:37.23 Then I made her to stand, 00:15:37.27\00:15:39.57 then I took a photograph for Mummy Eager 00:15:39.60\00:15:42.34 and that's how I found her. 00:15:42.37\00:15:45.17 I was very happy thinking 00:15:45.21\00:15:46.68 that I'm going to go to a school, 00:15:46.71\00:15:48.38 a hostel, English medium, 00:15:48.41\00:15:50.31 no one knows in my school what is English, means, 00:15:50.35\00:15:52.58 they don't know how to talk in English and all. 00:15:52.61\00:15:54.52 So I was very happy 00:15:54.55\00:15:55.88 that I will be the person to learn English and all. 00:15:55.92\00:15:58.29 So when I came here, 00:15:58.32\00:15:59.89 first two, three days I was nervous, 00:15:59.92\00:16:01.49 means I used to remember parents 00:16:01.52\00:16:02.86 all those things, 00:16:02.89\00:16:04.23 and only one single building was there, 00:16:04.26\00:16:06.29 and no boundary, you know, it was like jungle. 00:16:06.33\00:16:08.56 And jungle, means, 00:16:08.60\00:16:09.93 I really get very, very scared of that. 00:16:09.96\00:16:12.73 And no boundary, no nothing, only one building was there, 00:16:12.77\00:16:15.60 boys, girls, staff, 00:16:15.64\00:16:17.14 everyone in same building doing all the activities, 00:16:17.17\00:16:20.28 eating, sleeping, studying, 00:16:20.31\00:16:22.04 everything in the same building. 00:16:22.08\00:16:24.01 From right at the beginning 00:16:24.05\00:16:25.38 when this school was just one classroom, 00:16:25.41\00:16:27.42 then with the vision of Helen Eager 00:16:27.45\00:16:29.58 and supporters like Garwin McNeilus, 00:16:29.62\00:16:32.09 the school sprouted into an institution 00:16:32.12\00:16:35.06 that now has, I think about 700 children 00:16:35.09\00:16:38.29 and of those 600 are sponsored. 00:16:38.33\00:16:40.50 And now we see 00:16:40.53\00:16:41.86 the success stories coming through. 00:16:41.90\00:16:43.73 Devoki who was right at the school 00:16:43.77\00:16:46.33 when it started, 00:16:46.37\00:16:47.70 she did her education at the school, 00:16:47.74\00:16:49.64 then she went away to university, 00:16:49.67\00:16:51.77 and now she's come back as a science teacher. 00:16:51.81\00:16:54.58 It's just so fantastic to see 00:16:54.61\00:16:56.58 the difference that has made with her 00:16:56.61\00:16:58.91 but also with the children that are here. 00:16:58.95\00:17:02.85 If it weren't for the timely intervention 00:17:02.88\00:17:04.75 of Child Impact International and people like Helen Eager, 00:17:04.79\00:17:08.12 Devoki Moharia's life would have seen misfortunes 00:17:08.16\00:17:11.23 of so many young girls like her in her village. 00:17:11.26\00:17:15.36 Life in rural India is simple. 00:17:15.40\00:17:17.73 People live in close quarters and as one unit. 00:17:17.77\00:17:20.30 During the day, they either go to the fields 00:17:24.94\00:17:27.44 or graze what little livestock they have. 00:17:27.48\00:17:30.18 And there is a clear order of social precedence 00:17:30.21\00:17:32.71 based on gender 00:17:32.75\00:17:34.08 and women have little or no say in its structure, 00:17:34.12\00:17:36.92 often leading to unjust practices and misery. 00:17:36.95\00:17:40.46 In villages, parents, they are uneducated 00:17:40.49\00:17:42.69 and they don't send their children 00:17:42.72\00:17:46.29 when they are small to the school. 00:17:46.33\00:17:48.56 So that is the reason I never went to school. 00:17:48.60\00:17:51.47 In villages, that is a rule that when a girl is grown up, 00:17:51.50\00:17:55.17 she should be given marriage to someone. 00:17:55.20\00:17:59.04 So in my case also, it would have been like 00:17:59.07\00:18:00.98 that when I would not have been come 00:18:01.01\00:18:02.34 to the school and study. 00:18:02.38\00:18:03.71 By this time, I would have got married, 00:18:03.75\00:18:05.65 having children, all those things. 00:18:05.68\00:18:09.68 Child marriage is a common practice 00:18:09.72\00:18:11.39 in South Asia 00:18:11.42\00:18:12.75 and it is more prevalent in India. 00:18:12.79\00:18:14.72 According to United Nations Children's Agency, 00:18:14.76\00:18:17.36 UNICEF, 18% of the girls are married 00:18:17.39\00:18:20.20 by the age of 15. 00:18:20.23\00:18:23.57 Although Indian law has made child marriage illegal 00:18:23.60\00:18:26.53 and the practice is in decline in recent years, 00:18:26.57\00:18:28.84 customs and traditions dictate life 00:18:28.87\00:18:30.91 in rural India. 00:18:30.94\00:18:32.27 It is like so in Devoki's village, Basuli. 00:18:32.31\00:18:36.28 At present, I don't have any of my friends to my age, 00:18:36.31\00:18:39.28 only I'm the girl in my village, 00:18:39.31\00:18:41.38 all are younger to me, all have got married. 00:18:41.42\00:18:45.15 By now, she would have got married. 00:18:45.19\00:18:47.19 If she would have not studied here, 00:18:47.22\00:18:49.09 by now, she would have got married. 00:18:49.12\00:18:50.89 So by now, 00:18:50.93\00:18:52.26 she would have been lost in that way. 00:18:52.29\00:18:54.53 But now she is in God's hand. 00:18:54.56\00:18:57.17 She is doing wonderful. 00:18:57.20\00:19:00.80 Although, Devoki grew up in a boarding school at Jeypore 00:19:00.84\00:19:03.91 and went to college in bigger cities, 00:19:03.94\00:19:05.81 she has not forgotten her roots and is always happy 00:19:05.84\00:19:08.31 to visit her family in her village. 00:19:08.34\00:19:12.25 Yeah, I feel very happy 00:19:12.28\00:19:13.62 because I'm born and brought up in this village. 00:19:13.65\00:19:16.52 And even though I stay in a town or something, 00:19:16.55\00:19:19.35 but I still have love for my village, 00:19:19.39\00:19:21.92 for my family members. 00:19:21.96\00:19:23.29 I feel very happy 00:19:23.32\00:19:24.66 when I come back to my home and see them. 00:19:24.69\00:19:26.03 Devoki is the only girl to have successfully received 00:19:30.07\00:19:33.07 a college education from her village. 00:19:33.10\00:19:35.00 And in a community 00:19:35.04\00:19:36.37 where women have little or no say, 00:19:36.40\00:19:38.17 she is treated with utmost respect. 00:19:38.21\00:19:42.88 We feel very proud. 00:19:42.91\00:19:44.61 Whenever someone comes to visit us, 00:19:44.65\00:19:46.48 we always tell them about our daughter. 00:19:46.51\00:19:48.45 When she comes here, we're very happy and proud. 00:19:48.48\00:19:51.52 The realization 00:19:51.55\00:19:52.89 that there are many more children out there 00:19:52.92\00:19:54.56 who yearn for a good education can be discouraging, 00:19:54.59\00:19:57.56 but it is reassuring to know that with sponsorship, 00:19:57.59\00:20:00.53 we can go about making a difference one day at a time. 00:20:00.56\00:20:04.43 When we are at home, 00:20:04.47\00:20:06.33 sometimes we're not getting three meals to eat, 00:20:06.37\00:20:09.10 no good place to sleep. 00:20:09.14\00:20:11.17 So when schools are there, like this school, 00:20:11.21\00:20:14.34 they are providing meals, education, and sponsors, 00:20:14.38\00:20:17.48 they are struggling hard to educate some other's life. 00:20:17.51\00:20:20.95 That is something very great to understand. 00:20:20.98\00:20:23.95 Since sponsorship was there, I studied. 00:20:23.99\00:20:27.19 And I'm... 00:20:27.22\00:20:28.56 I'm so much grateful to my sponsor. 00:20:28.59\00:20:31.29 And to me, it's really wonderful 00:20:31.33\00:20:32.93 just to see the changes. 00:20:32.96\00:20:34.73 You know, when you see a child come looking dirty 00:20:34.76\00:20:38.63 and unhappy 00:20:38.67\00:20:40.00 and know that nobody cares about them, 00:20:40.04\00:20:42.47 and then after a very short time 00:20:42.50\00:20:44.61 to see the transformation, 00:20:44.64\00:20:45.97 and then after few years to see them really doing well. 00:20:46.01\00:20:50.18 I think that's what makes its worthwhile. 00:20:50.21\00:20:52.48 Devoki, although having better offers 00:20:52.51\00:20:54.45 to teach outside in bigger cities, 00:20:54.48\00:20:56.48 has come back to teach in the place 00:20:56.52\00:20:58.19 that gave her a new chance in life. 00:20:58.22\00:21:00.39 Actually, my education, 00:21:00.42\00:21:03.32 my foundation is started from here, 00:21:03.36\00:21:05.96 so I thought first let me serve to my place, 00:21:05.99\00:21:09.60 the place where I belong to, where I have got my foundation, 00:21:09.63\00:21:12.77 whatever talent I have, let me show to those people 00:21:12.80\00:21:15.24 so that those students also will learn about that. 00:21:15.27\00:21:18.37 I feel proud because whatever I did for her, 00:21:18.41\00:21:23.55 I've got the fruit. 00:21:23.58\00:21:24.91 Today, Child Impact International continues 00:21:38.19\00:21:40.90 to fulfill it's commitment to the welfare of children 00:21:40.93\00:21:43.77 who are in need and to provide them 00:21:43.80\00:21:45.60 with an education through sponsorship, 00:21:45.63\00:21:47.77 giving them hope and a chance for a better life. 00:21:47.80\00:21:50.84 Zig Zag Zoom... 00:21:50.87\00:21:52.47 So they are building lives, that, people means, 00:21:52.51\00:21:55.58 students and children, they are in the darkness. 00:21:55.61\00:21:58.05 They are receiving the light in their lives. 00:21:58.08\00:22:01.65 Once if they are at their home, 00:22:01.68\00:22:03.08 their lights are been off or gone away, 00:22:03.12\00:22:05.29 but once they are coming here, 00:22:05.32\00:22:06.65 the light of their life is being on. 00:22:06.69\00:22:10.33 Since I think that, I feel, since I was in this school, 00:22:10.36\00:22:14.63 I'm blessed to this position today. 00:22:14.66\00:22:17.30 I've been in this position over eight years now. 00:22:21.37\00:22:24.61 And the privilege that I have in my role 00:22:24.64\00:22:27.04 is being able to visit the children 00:22:27.08\00:22:29.48 that you the donors support. 00:22:29.51\00:22:31.68 And as I meet them, 00:22:31.71\00:22:33.05 I see the difference that you make in their lives. 00:22:33.08\00:22:36.12 The difference you make 00:22:36.15\00:22:37.49 and where they live in their village, 00:22:37.52\00:22:39.25 the difference you make with their education, 00:22:39.29\00:22:41.82 and then finally when they get a job. 00:22:41.86\00:22:44.23 Just the other day in India, we met a bank manager. 00:22:44.26\00:22:47.83 He was brought up as a sponsored child 00:22:47.86\00:22:50.67 from a very poor village 00:22:50.70\00:22:52.73 and now he has a successful job, 00:22:52.77\00:22:55.04 he has a family, 00:22:55.07\00:22:56.44 and he is impacting the lives of others. 00:22:56.47\00:22:58.94 And in fact, the amazing thing is, 00:22:58.97\00:23:00.98 he is now sponsoring two children 00:23:01.01\00:23:03.55 in one of our programs. 00:23:03.58\00:23:05.95 This is an important time of year. 00:23:05.98\00:23:08.08 It's a time of year where we share 00:23:08.12\00:23:10.05 and where we give gifts to our loved ones and friends. 00:23:10.09\00:23:13.56 But it's also an important time 00:23:13.59\00:23:15.16 of year for us here at Child Impact. 00:23:15.19\00:23:18.13 And this year for our annual appeal, 00:23:18.16\00:23:20.63 we have four projects that will make a real impact 00:23:20.66\00:23:24.37 with the people that they serve. 00:23:24.40\00:23:27.20 Our first project is Where Needed Most Fund, 00:23:27.24\00:23:30.44 this is a critical fund for Child Impact, 00:23:30.47\00:23:33.84 as it not only helps with the operating 00:23:33.88\00:23:36.31 that we do in six countries, 00:23:36.34\00:23:38.88 but it also allows us to have a pool of money 00:23:38.91\00:23:42.18 for emergencies which consistently come along. 00:23:42.22\00:23:45.55 Some are small just like medical needs, 00:23:45.59\00:23:48.19 but others are major 00:23:48.22\00:23:49.56 when there's a disaster or a flood. 00:23:49.59\00:23:51.79 We just ask that you consider the "Where Needed Most Funds" 00:23:51.83\00:23:55.46 as one of the ones 00:23:55.50\00:23:56.83 that you can support this Christmas. 00:23:56.87\00:23:59.27 Our next project is Operation Child Rescue. 00:23:59.30\00:24:02.67 Operation Child Rescue is a very dramatic project 00:24:02.70\00:24:06.88 that we are involved in Bengaluru, India. 00:24:06.91\00:24:10.68 We're partner with a lady 00:24:10.71\00:24:12.21 who has a team that rescues girls 00:24:12.25\00:24:15.08 from brothels and the sex industry. 00:24:15.12\00:24:17.99 It's simply hard to comprehend 00:24:18.02\00:24:20.19 how many girls and children are taken 00:24:20.22\00:24:22.89 to the sex industry. 00:24:22.92\00:24:24.39 In India, it's thousands every year. 00:24:24.43\00:24:27.50 The same team helps rescue boys 00:24:27.53\00:24:30.30 from factories with a poorly paid 00:24:30.33\00:24:33.20 or hardly paid anything. 00:24:33.23\00:24:35.20 And the other aspect of Operation Child Rescue 00:24:35.24\00:24:38.44 is looking after and rescuing babies 00:24:38.47\00:24:41.31 who have been dropped off on the side 00:24:41.34\00:24:43.11 of the road or abandoned. 00:24:43.14\00:24:45.21 Operation Child Rescue is not only saving lives, 00:24:45.25\00:24:49.42 it's giving those children hope. 00:24:49.45\00:24:52.02 Operation Child Rescue is a key project 00:24:52.05\00:24:55.36 for Child Impact International. 00:24:55.39\00:24:58.16 The next project is the Unsponsored Child Fund. 00:24:58.19\00:25:01.76 At anytime, Child Impact has over 3,500 children, 00:25:01.80\00:25:06.94 and we normally have about 500 unsponsored children. 00:25:06.97\00:25:10.87 These are children we have had to take 00:25:10.91\00:25:12.77 because of an urgent need. 00:25:12.81\00:25:14.71 We also need a pool of children available for sponsorship. 00:25:14.74\00:25:18.61 And yes, once a donor can't support a child 00:25:18.65\00:25:22.28 for some reason, 00:25:22.32\00:25:23.79 they go into that pool of children. 00:25:23.82\00:25:26.22 Once a child is in our program, we support them 00:25:26.25\00:25:29.56 whether they have a sponsorship or not. 00:25:29.59\00:25:32.86 Supporting the Unsponsored Child Fund 00:25:32.89\00:25:35.40 is a unique way of being involved 00:25:35.43\00:25:37.90 in sponsorship 00:25:37.93\00:25:39.27 if you don't want the monthly commitment. 00:25:39.30\00:25:41.74 The Unsponsored Child Fund is critical 00:25:41.77\00:25:44.87 to our sponsorship program. 00:25:44.91\00:25:47.84 Child Impact is very excited 00:25:47.88\00:25:49.78 that we can partner with the church in India 00:25:49.81\00:25:52.68 with a blind school, a deaf school, 00:25:52.71\00:25:55.22 and four orphanages. 00:25:55.25\00:25:57.35 These special homes and schools are just so exciting to visit. 00:25:57.39\00:26:03.06 I have one of the most emotional moments 00:26:03.09\00:26:05.36 of my whole work career, 00:26:05.39\00:26:07.80 when one day, I visited the blind school. 00:26:07.83\00:26:10.43 And a young girl 00:26:10.47\00:26:11.80 was just arrived at the school that morning, 00:26:11.83\00:26:14.27 they had found her in a village 00:26:14.30\00:26:16.14 and she had been locked in the basement 00:26:16.17\00:26:18.14 of the house for over six years. 00:26:18.17\00:26:20.94 She just sat in the corner, she wouldn't talk to anyone, 00:26:20.98\00:26:24.48 she wouldn't communicate, and she was just totally lost. 00:26:24.51\00:26:27.78 And I thought, 00:26:27.82\00:26:29.15 "Is there any hope for this child, 00:26:29.18\00:26:31.65 totally blind by the way?" 00:26:31.69\00:26:33.92 Well, I went back eight weeks later, 00:26:33.96\00:26:36.52 and here she was, I couldn't believe it. 00:26:36.56\00:26:39.06 She was talking to the other children, 00:26:39.09\00:26:41.73 she was playing. 00:26:41.76\00:26:43.10 And then in the evening, it was just so touching 00:26:43.13\00:26:45.77 to see her singing Jesus loves me, 00:26:45.80\00:26:48.97 it really was just very emotional. 00:26:49.00\00:26:51.87 And so these children in a country like India, 00:26:51.91\00:26:56.24 have a larger need than here 00:26:56.28\00:26:58.31 because when they are home in their village, 00:26:58.35\00:27:00.45 they are rejected. 00:27:00.48\00:27:01.82 Their parents don't know what to do. 00:27:01.85\00:27:03.99 So supporting the blind school, the deaf school, 00:27:04.02\00:27:07.22 or the orphanages is a very real way 00:27:07.26\00:27:10.76 in which you can impact the life of children, 00:27:10.79\00:27:13.83 who have a huge need. 00:27:13.86\00:27:15.76 We're very grateful to Child Impact 00:27:15.80\00:27:17.73 for the support that you the donors give. 00:27:17.77\00:27:20.60 But December is a critical month for us 00:27:20.64\00:27:23.54 and a month where you can give to one of these four funds 00:27:23.57\00:27:27.18 or any of our projects and have a real impact. 00:27:27.21\00:27:30.85 I just ask that you give consideration 00:27:30.88\00:27:33.52 to supporting our yearend program 00:27:33.55\00:27:36.28 for one of these four projects. 00:27:36.32\00:27:38.75 You can contact us on our phone by talking to our staff, 00:27:38.79\00:27:43.12 and we put the number on the screen 00:27:43.16\00:27:45.29 or you can go online to ChildImpact.org, 00:27:45.33\00:27:49.70 that's ChildImpact.org 00:27:49.73\00:27:52.20 to see how you can get further information 00:27:52.23\00:27:55.30 or support us at Child Impact International. 00:27:55.34\00:27:58.91 I wanna thank you for your support. 00:27:58.94\00:28:01.24
