In this episode of Hope In Motion, 00:00:02.06\00:00:04.17 we take a look at how your contributions 00:00:04.20\00:00:06.63 are making positive changes 00:00:06.67\00:00:08.54 in the lives of so many children in India. 00:00:08.57\00:00:11.57 Sixty to seventy percent, 00:00:11.61\00:00:13.07 we are dependent on the sponsorship. 00:00:13.11\00:00:16.78 Without the support of any sponsorship, 00:00:16.81\00:00:19.98 those children would not be here. 00:00:20.02\00:00:22.85 We visited an Adventist school 00:00:22.88\00:00:24.45 that sprung from one woman's vision 00:00:24.49\00:00:26.79 to a sprawling beautiful campus today. 00:00:26.82\00:00:30.19 It just sort of amazes me when I think of, you know, 00:00:30.23\00:00:32.99 what we started from with absolutely nothing, 00:00:33.03\00:00:36.67 to see what is there today is just mind boggling, really. 00:00:36.70\00:00:42.10 And meet Devoki, a science teacher 00:00:42.14\00:00:44.37 at the school, who defied all social norms 00:00:44.41\00:00:47.24 to pursue a life of her own. 00:00:47.28\00:00:49.68 In villages that is a rule that when a girl is grown up, 00:00:49.71\00:00:53.52 she should be given in marriage to someone. 00:00:53.55\00:00:57.32 So in my case also it would have been like that 00:00:57.35\00:00:59.49 when I would not have come to the school and study. 00:00:59.52\00:01:01.62 By this time, I would have 00:01:01.66\00:01:02.99 even got married, having children, 00:01:03.02\00:01:05.29 all those things. 00:01:05.33\00:01:06.66 Asian Aid is an organization giving hope, 00:01:19.47\00:01:22.58 an organization fostering permanent positive change 00:01:22.61\00:01:25.65 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:01:25.68\00:01:27.65 and their communities, 00:01:27.68\00:01:29.65 an organization that is committed 00:01:29.68\00:01:31.35 to making a difference in the lives of children 00:01:31.39\00:01:33.76 and those who are in need 00:01:33.79\00:01:35.39 serving communities in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, 00:01:35.42\00:01:39.59 Myanmar, and India. 00:01:39.63\00:01:41.36 For the last 40 years, 00:01:49.30\00:01:51.17 Asian Aid has invested in the futures of people, 00:01:51.21\00:01:53.94 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:01:53.98\00:01:58.21 Driven by their dedication 00:01:58.25\00:01:59.71 to helping those who have the least, 00:01:59.75\00:02:02.22 Asian Aid is an organization 00:02:02.25\00:02:03.99 focused on the welfare of children 00:02:04.02\00:02:06.45 implementing diverse development projects 00:02:06.49\00:02:09.22 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:02:09.26\00:02:11.99 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:02:12.03\00:02:15.30 to providing an education for orphans, deaf, 00:02:15.33\00:02:18.47 and the blind children, 00:02:18.50\00:02:20.54 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:02:20.57\00:02:23.41 But above all, Asian Aid is an organization giving hope, 00:02:23.44\00:02:27.68 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:02:27.71\00:02:31.31 giving hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:02:31.35\00:02:35.18 This is Hope In Motion. 00:02:35.22\00:02:37.49 The beautiful landscapes, its people, 00:03:02.58\00:03:05.28 the colors and customs, that's India in a nutshell. 00:03:05.31\00:03:08.95 Asian Aid has been working in this vast land 00:03:19.56\00:03:22.26 since its very beginning, 00:03:22.30\00:03:23.73 which is nearly 40 years ago now. 00:03:23.77\00:03:26.30 Primarily focused on child sponsorship, 00:03:26.33\00:03:28.97 Asian Aid also has been instrumental 00:03:29.00\00:03:31.07 in building many children's homes and schools 00:03:31.11\00:03:34.04 to complement its sponsorshipprogram. 00:03:34.08\00:03:36.75 The Immanuel English School in Jeypore 00:03:36.78\00:03:39.11 in the state of Orissa 00:03:39.15\00:03:40.62 is one that has undergone a transformation. 00:03:40.65\00:03:44.22 In the beginning, we just were sort of picturing, 00:03:44.25\00:03:46.82 maybe, you know, just a small boarding school. 00:03:46.86\00:03:49.29 We were thinking a lot 00:03:49.32\00:03:50.66 of the very primitive tribal people 00:03:50.69\00:03:52.33 that were there in Orissa, 00:03:52.36\00:03:53.76 especially the Bonda tribals was what, 00:03:53.80\00:03:56.16 you know, we had on our minds 00:03:56.20\00:03:57.60 when we started the school. 00:03:57.63\00:03:59.87 Jeypore and most parts of Orissa 00:03:59.90\00:04:01.80 come under the so-called tribal belt of India 00:04:01.84\00:04:04.77 where primitive tribal people live. 00:04:04.81\00:04:07.28 Cut off from the mainstream societies, 00:04:07.31\00:04:09.64 they live in the mountains in remote regions 00:04:09.68\00:04:11.91 with no basic amenities, largely living off of the land. 00:04:11.95\00:04:15.55 Helen Eager, co-founder of Asian Aid 00:04:22.99\00:04:25.53 has been visiting these communities, 00:04:25.56\00:04:27.50 especially the Bonda tribe. 00:04:27.53\00:04:29.70 Moved by their backwardness and the plight of the children 00:04:29.73\00:04:32.70 from these communities, 00:04:32.73\00:04:34.17 she started a school for them at Jeypore. 00:04:34.20\00:04:37.11 Starting with around 50 children 00:04:37.14\00:04:39.07 and a few staff, 00:04:39.11\00:04:40.44 all under one roof, and without a boundary wall 00:04:40.48\00:04:43.01 to protect them from wild animals, 00:04:43.04\00:04:45.41 it was a testing time for the children, the staff, 00:04:45.45\00:04:48.68 and for principal, Arun Ponda. 00:04:48.72\00:04:51.95 And once Mrs. Eager brought Elder Garwin Mcneilus 00:04:51.99\00:04:56.09 and his wife to visit this place. 00:04:56.12\00:04:59.56 So once when he came over here, he was very much impressed 00:04:59.59\00:05:05.03 with the way children are learning over here, 00:05:05.07\00:05:09.60 and he felt that he will do something. 00:05:09.64\00:05:12.17 He'll take up this project. 00:05:12.21\00:05:14.88 Garwin McNeilus, 00:05:14.91\00:05:16.24 an Adventist businessman from Minnesota impressed 00:05:16.28\00:05:19.05 by what was being done at the school 00:05:19.08\00:05:21.05 took up the project of building a larger facility in 2004. 00:05:21.08\00:05:25.85 Within a year, the first phase of the new campus was ready. 00:05:25.89\00:05:28.99 And year later, it had grown to what it is now. 00:05:29.02\00:05:34.20 We just feel surprised how the things have changed. 00:05:34.23\00:05:39.60 Everything was just like the hill that you see behind, 00:05:39.63\00:05:44.94 full of bushes and unwanted plants. 00:05:44.97\00:05:48.38 So nobody from town 00:05:48.41\00:05:50.21 ever thought that there can be something here. 00:05:50.25\00:05:54.38 But God has blessed this place, and we can see a great change. 00:05:54.42\00:06:01.02 It just sort of amazes me when I think of, you know, 00:06:01.06\00:06:03.93 what we started from with absolutely nothing, 00:06:03.96\00:06:07.56 to see what is there today is just mind boggling, really. 00:06:07.60\00:06:12.20 The larger facility made it possible 00:06:26.18\00:06:28.12 to bring in more children from the tribal communities 00:06:28.15\00:06:30.92 as well as nearby villages. 00:06:30.95\00:06:33.25 As the news of the new facility spread, 00:06:33.29\00:06:35.52 many more children from Adventist 00:06:35.56\00:06:37.56 and non Adventist families 00:06:37.59\00:06:39.43 desired to be educated at the new school. 00:06:39.46\00:06:41.73 Many in rural India struggle to earn 00:06:46.33\00:06:48.37 even two dollars a day. 00:06:48.40\00:06:50.27 Their only way of earning a living 00:06:50.31\00:06:51.94 is grazing their livestock 00:06:51.97\00:06:53.31 or working in the fields. 00:06:53.34\00:06:55.31 Here poverty passes from generation to generation, 00:06:55.34\00:06:59.05 and education is not an option. 00:06:59.08\00:07:01.85 I mean some parts of India really seem to be growing, 00:07:01.88\00:07:04.42 and really, you know, 00:07:04.45\00:07:05.79 India seems to be really coming up as they say, 00:07:05.82\00:07:08.09 but when you go to the villages and the slums, 00:07:08.12\00:07:11.09 they have not improved 00:07:11.13\00:07:12.66 in all the years that, you know, 00:07:12.69\00:07:14.20 I've been coming to India 00:07:14.23\00:07:15.56 which is now more than 30 years. 00:07:15.60\00:07:17.80 You know, when you go to the villages, 00:07:17.83\00:07:19.17 and you see into some of the slums, 00:07:19.20\00:07:21.00 and you see how bad, 00:07:21.04\00:07:22.80 you know, the conditions are of the people 00:07:22.84\00:07:24.67 and the children are living under 00:07:24.71\00:07:26.31 because this, often, 00:07:26.34\00:07:27.68 it's not that they don't want to work, 00:07:27.71\00:07:29.04 but there's just not enough work available. 00:07:29.08\00:07:32.15 Although the majority of the people 00:07:32.18\00:07:33.75 cannot afford to send their children to school, 00:07:33.78\00:07:36.48 they do view education as a catalyst for change. 00:07:36.52\00:07:40.32 Sixty to seventy percent, 00:07:40.36\00:07:41.92 we are dependent on the sponsorship. 00:07:41.96\00:07:46.76 because majority of this children are poor, 00:07:46.80\00:07:50.07 and they don't have any support. 00:07:50.10\00:07:55.37 Without the support of any sponsorship, 00:07:55.40\00:07:58.54 those children would not be here. 00:07:58.57\00:08:01.51 Today over 6,000 children in India 00:08:01.54\00:08:04.18 are sponsored by Asian Aid. 00:08:04.21\00:08:06.08 And because of their commitment to the welfare of children, 00:08:06.11\00:08:08.88 especially children 00:08:08.92\00:08:10.29 from tribal communities and villages, 00:08:10.32\00:08:12.65 these children are reaping the benefits 00:08:12.69\00:08:14.92 of an Adventist education. 00:08:14.96\00:08:16.62 Devoki Moharia, 00:08:42.75\00:08:44.29 a science teacher at the Immanuel English School 00:08:44.32\00:08:46.89 was a former student here. 00:08:46.92\00:08:49.16 I finished my BSc degree in college, 00:08:49.19\00:08:52.83 and I'm very much interested in science 00:08:52.86\00:08:55.23 because I was good at science. 00:08:55.26\00:08:58.13 In this school, I teach mostly, 8th, 9th, 10th. 00:08:58.17\00:09:01.97 I teach them chemistry and biology. 00:09:02.00\00:09:05.64 Devoki was among the first batch of children 00:09:05.67\00:09:07.98 to be brought to the school 00:09:08.01\00:09:09.34 from neighboring villages 00:09:09.38\00:09:11.08 when Helen Eager and some of the staff 00:09:11.11\00:09:12.88 from the school visited these villages. 00:09:12.91\00:09:15.52 I sent messages to the church pastors. 00:09:15.55\00:09:19.59 If there are any children from poverty level, 00:09:19.62\00:09:23.63 and wherever there are no schools. 00:09:23.66\00:09:26.49 So many names came from different churches. 00:09:26.53\00:09:31.53 Then, first, I went to some orphan children, 00:09:31.57\00:09:35.47 then I came to know that there are two girls... 00:09:35.50\00:09:39.01 Very small girls nearby Kotpat town. 00:09:39.04\00:09:42.48 So I went there 00:09:42.51\00:09:43.85 and I met with her father, Devoki. 00:09:43.88\00:09:49.28 Then her father was not willing to send the girl here 00:09:49.32\00:09:54.96 because there was no boundary around, 00:09:54.99\00:09:57.13 and there was only one building build by Asian Aid. 00:09:57.16\00:10:01.70 Then when I went, 00:10:01.73\00:10:03.06 she was the smallest among the two. 00:10:03.10\00:10:06.13 Then she started crying not to take photo. 00:10:06.17\00:10:09.60 I carried her, I gave her chocolate. 00:10:09.64\00:10:13.14 Then I made her to stand, 00:10:13.17\00:10:15.61 then I took a photograph for Mummy Eager, 00:10:15.64\00:10:18.38 and that's how I found her. 00:10:18.41\00:10:21.22 I was very happy 00:10:21.25\00:10:22.58 thinking that I'm going to go to a school, 00:10:22.62\00:10:24.42 a hostel, English medium. 00:10:24.45\00:10:26.35 No one knows in my school what it mean, 00:10:26.39\00:10:28.62 they don't know how to talk in English and all. 00:10:28.66\00:10:30.76 So I was very happy that I will be the person 00:10:30.79\00:10:32.63 to learn English and all. 00:10:32.66\00:10:34.43 So when I came here, 00:10:34.46\00:10:35.96 first two, three days, I was nervous, means, 00:10:36.00\00:10:37.83 I used to remember parents, all this thing. 00:10:37.87\00:10:39.97 And only one single building was there and no boundary. 00:10:40.00\00:10:43.87 It was like jungle. 00:10:43.91\00:10:45.24 And jungle means I really get very, very scared of that. 00:10:45.27\00:10:48.91 And no boundary, no, nothing, only one building was there. 00:10:48.94\00:10:51.68 Boys, girls, staff, everyone in same building. 00:10:51.71\00:10:55.08 Doing all the activities, eating, sleeping, studying, 00:10:55.12\00:10:58.05 everything in the same building. 00:10:58.09\00:11:00.62 With the untiring efforts of Helen Eager, 00:11:00.66\00:11:03.02 and the prayers of staff and children, 00:11:03.06\00:11:05.16 the small school was transformed 00:11:05.19\00:11:07.33 into a huge campus. 00:11:07.36\00:11:10.00 And like a miracle, suddenly Garwin Papa 00:11:10.03\00:11:12.40 and Mama came here. 00:11:12.43\00:11:14.60 So we think and we believe 00:11:14.64\00:11:16.81 that God Himself has chosen this people, 00:11:16.84\00:11:18.94 and He has sent to help His children, 00:11:18.97\00:11:21.54 so that many more souls 00:11:21.58\00:11:22.91 will be added into His kingdom. 00:11:22.94\00:11:24.95 From right at the beginning 00:11:24.98\00:11:26.31 when the school was just one classroom, 00:11:26.35\00:11:28.38 then with the vision of Helen Eager, 00:11:28.42\00:11:30.49 and supporters like Garwin McNeilus, 00:11:30.52\00:11:33.12 this school sprouted into an institution 00:11:33.15\00:11:36.12 that now has, I think about 700 children. 00:11:36.16\00:11:39.19 And of those 600 are sponsored. 00:11:39.23\00:11:41.53 And now we see 00:11:41.56\00:11:42.90 the success stories coming through. 00:11:42.93\00:11:44.77 Devoki, who was right at the school 00:11:44.80\00:11:47.24 when it started, 00:11:47.27\00:11:48.60 she did her education at the school, 00:11:48.64\00:11:50.74 then she went away to university, 00:11:50.77\00:11:52.84 and now she's come back as a science teacher. 00:11:52.87\00:11:55.71 It's just so fantastic to see 00:11:55.74\00:11:57.58 the difference that has made with her, 00:11:57.61\00:11:59.98 but also with the children that are here. 00:12:00.02\00:12:03.22 If it weren't for the timely intervention, 00:12:03.25\00:12:05.52 if Asian Aid and people like Helen Eager, 00:12:05.55\00:12:08.32 Devoki Moharia's life would have seen 00:12:08.36\00:12:10.69 the same misfortunes of many young girls 00:12:10.73\00:12:14.00 just like her in her village. 00:12:14.03\00:12:16.60 In villages that is a rule that when a girl is grown up, 00:12:16.63\00:12:20.30 she should be given in marriage to someone. 00:12:20.34\00:12:24.17 So in my case also it would have been like that 00:12:24.21\00:12:26.37 when I would not have come to the school and study. 00:12:26.41\00:12:28.61 By this time, I would have even got married, 00:12:28.64\00:12:30.81 having children, all those things. 00:12:30.85\00:12:33.52 One of the huge problems that is existing 00:12:41.09\00:12:43.39 in the world today is that of human trafficking. 00:12:43.43\00:12:47.60 Of course, it is a global thing 00:12:47.63\00:12:49.33 but because I have worked a lot in India and Nepal, 00:12:49.36\00:12:52.13 I know that it is huge in these countries. 00:12:52.17\00:12:55.57 And the way these children are treated 00:12:55.60\00:12:57.37 is just unbelievable 00:12:57.41\00:12:59.67 and what they suffer, you just could not believe. 00:12:59.71\00:13:03.14 And so with your help, and we're so excited 00:13:03.18\00:13:07.25 that Asian Aid has now got the project 00:13:07.28\00:13:09.98 called Operation Child Rescue, 00:13:10.02\00:13:12.55 we can make a difference and do something 00:13:12.59\00:13:14.92 for these children before this happens to them, 00:13:14.96\00:13:18.63 and for some of them, 00:13:18.66\00:13:20.00 they can be rescued from this situation. 00:13:20.03\00:13:22.73 If you would like to become involved, 00:13:22.76\00:13:24.67 we would just be so very, very grateful. 00:13:24.70\00:13:28.17 A few years ago, 00:13:41.28\00:13:42.62 I had the privilege of visiting India 00:13:42.65\00:13:45.05 to see how the Asian Aid projects 00:13:45.09\00:13:46.82 are making a difference in that country, 00:13:46.86\00:13:49.19 how lives are being transformed, 00:13:49.22\00:13:51.66 lives of abandoned children, 00:13:51.69\00:13:53.80 tribal children, orphan children, 00:13:53.83\00:13:56.16 children that are being raised 00:13:56.20\00:13:57.80 without the advantages we have here in America. 00:13:57.83\00:14:00.00 And sometimes we take for granted. 00:14:00.04\00:14:02.00 And I discovered one very important thing, 00:14:02.04\00:14:04.17 because of sponsors like you, 00:14:04.21\00:14:06.07 these lives are being transformed, 00:14:06.11\00:14:07.64 the future is made brighter 00:14:07.68\00:14:10.15 because of your prayers and your financial support. 00:14:10.18\00:14:13.08 Because of what you do, they now have nutritious food, 00:14:13.11\00:14:16.38 clothing, and they are able now 00:14:16.42\00:14:18.32 to propel themselves with education 00:14:18.35\00:14:20.82 to look to the future with hope and courage. 00:14:20.86\00:14:24.33 And so on behalf of Asian Aid, 00:14:24.36\00:14:25.76 I want to thank you for all you do, 00:14:25.79\00:14:27.80 your sponsorship. 00:14:27.83\00:14:29.26 And now because of you, they have hope, 00:14:29.30\00:14:31.97 hope for brighter future. 00:14:32.00\00:14:34.27 Life in rural India is simple. 00:15:00.90\00:15:03.30 People live in close quarters 00:15:03.33\00:15:05.03 and as a unit. 00:15:05.07\00:15:06.40 During the day they either go to the field or they graze 00:15:10.24\00:15:13.04 what little livestock they have. 00:15:13.07\00:15:15.31 And there's a clear order of social precedents 00:15:15.34\00:15:17.65 based on gender. 00:15:17.68\00:15:19.38 Women have little or no say in it structure, 00:15:19.41\00:15:22.05 often leading to unjust practices and misery. 00:15:22.08\00:15:25.79 So in villages, parents are uneducated 00:15:25.82\00:15:28.39 and they don't send their children 00:15:28.42\00:15:31.96 when they are small to the school. 00:15:31.99\00:15:34.13 So that is the reason I never went to school. 00:15:34.16\00:15:36.97 In villages that is a rule that when a girl is grown up, 00:15:37.00\00:15:40.74 she should be given in marriage to someone. 00:15:40.77\00:15:44.77 So in my case also it would have been like that 00:15:44.81\00:15:46.94 when I would not have come to the school and study. 00:15:46.98\00:15:49.21 By this time, I would have even got married, 00:15:49.24\00:15:51.35 having children, all those things. 00:15:51.38\00:15:54.65 Child marriage is a common practice 00:15:54.68\00:15:56.55 in South Asia, 00:15:56.58\00:15:57.92 and it's more prevalent in India. 00:15:57.95\00:16:00.06 According to the United Nations Children's Agency, UNICEF, 00:16:00.09\00:16:04.03 80% of girls are married by the age of 15. 00:16:04.06\00:16:08.46 Although Indian law has made child marriage illegal 00:16:08.50\00:16:11.63 and the practice is in decline in recent years, 00:16:11.67\00:16:14.47 customs and traditions dictate life in rural India. 00:16:14.50\00:16:18.31 It is like so in Devoki's village, Besuli. 00:16:18.34\00:16:22.08 At present, I don't have any of my friends to my age. 00:16:22.11\00:16:24.91 Only I'm the girl in my village. 00:16:24.95\00:16:27.02 All are younger to me. 00:16:27.05\00:16:28.48 All have got married. 00:16:28.52\00:16:30.85 By now, she would have got married 00:16:30.89\00:16:32.95 if she would not have studied here. 00:16:32.99\00:16:34.72 By now she would have got married, 00:16:34.76\00:16:36.89 so by now she would have been lost 00:16:36.93\00:16:38.56 in that way. 00:16:38.59\00:16:40.16 But now she is in God's hand. 00:16:40.20\00:16:42.93 She is doing wonderful. 00:16:42.96\00:16:45.93 If my daughter didn't go to school 00:16:45.97\00:16:47.80 like others and get an education, 00:16:47.84\00:16:49.50 her life would have been like others. 00:16:49.54\00:16:52.27 Although Devoki grew up in a boarding school in Jeypore 00:17:16.20\00:17:19.33 and went to college in bigger cities, 00:17:19.37\00:17:21.57 she has not forgotten her roots, 00:17:21.60\00:17:23.47 and is always happy 00:17:23.51\00:17:24.87 to visit her family in her village. 00:17:24.91\00:17:28.74 Yeah, I feel very happy 00:17:28.78\00:17:30.11 because I'm born and brought up in this village. 00:17:30.15\00:17:33.11 And even though I stay in town or something, 00:17:33.15\00:17:35.88 but I still have love for my village, 00:17:35.92\00:17:38.52 for my family members. 00:17:38.55\00:17:39.89 I feel very happy when I come back to my home 00:17:39.92\00:17:41.72 and see them. 00:17:41.76\00:17:44.06 Devoki is the only girl from her village 00:17:44.09\00:17:46.53 to have successfully received a college education. 00:17:46.56\00:17:50.07 And in a community 00:17:50.10\00:17:51.43 where women have little or no say, 00:17:51.47\00:17:53.74 she is treated with the utmost of respect. 00:17:53.77\00:17:59.54 We feel very proud. 00:17:59.57\00:18:01.14 Whenever someone comes to visit us, 00:18:01.18\00:18:03.01 we always tell them about our daughter. 00:18:03.04\00:18:05.05 When she comes here, we are very happy and proud. 00:18:05.08\00:18:08.88 Boys and girls 00:18:16.93\00:18:18.26 from underprivileged backgrounds 00:18:18.29\00:18:19.66 are today able to follow in the footsteps 00:18:19.69\00:18:22.33 of someone like Devoki. 00:18:22.36\00:18:24.50 It's because of institutions like Immanuel English School 00:18:24.53\00:18:27.50 and the people who envisioned it 00:18:27.54\00:18:29.40 to make a difference 00:18:29.44\00:18:30.77 in the lives of so many children. 00:18:30.81\00:18:33.71 Well, as an administrator 00:18:33.74\00:18:35.14 who travels to India and regularly, 00:18:35.18\00:18:37.38 we're just faced 00:18:37.41\00:18:38.75 with so many challenges and demands, 00:18:38.78\00:18:41.25 and it's just so refreshing to stop 00:18:41.28\00:18:44.52 and think about the actual blessings 00:18:44.55\00:18:46.65 that we have. 00:18:46.69\00:18:48.02 We see the problems, 00:18:48.06\00:18:49.39 but we lose sight of the children, 00:18:49.42\00:18:51.49 the children who are in the schools, 00:18:51.53\00:18:53.76 the children who we've made a difference with. 00:18:53.80\00:18:59.70 Ellen White said, 00:18:59.73\00:19:01.07 "Education is the harmonious development 00:19:01.10\00:19:03.57 of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers." 00:19:03.61\00:19:07.31 It prepares the student 00:19:07.34\00:19:08.68 for the joy of service in this world. 00:19:08.71\00:19:10.91 And for the higher joy 00:19:10.95\00:19:12.28 of wider service in the world to come, 00:19:12.31\00:19:14.85 this school campus, 00:19:14.88\00:19:16.22 although situated in a remote region 00:19:16.25\00:19:18.49 of one of India's backward states 00:19:18.52\00:19:20.89 is a fine example of true Adventist education. 00:19:20.92\00:19:25.26 The local community feels that this is the best campus 00:19:25.29\00:19:29.43 that we have. 00:19:29.46\00:19:31.00 No school has such a campus, 00:19:31.03\00:19:33.57 and there is peaceful atmosphere 00:19:33.60\00:19:38.51 to study. 00:19:38.54\00:19:39.87 There is no disturbance. 00:19:39.91\00:19:41.78 And everyone feels 00:19:41.81\00:19:44.45 that their child should be educated here. 00:19:44.48\00:19:48.12 Taking care of such a large campus 00:19:48.15\00:19:50.19 requires hard work. 00:19:50.22\00:19:51.89 But for Principal Ponda, that's not an issue. 00:19:51.92\00:19:55.16 Every child and staff member living on campus 00:19:55.19\00:19:58.29 has their work cut out, 00:19:58.33\00:19:59.86 and they do it with enthusiasm. 00:19:59.89\00:20:02.86 I travel to many schools in India, 00:20:02.90\00:20:04.77 but it's just so delightful to come to this one at Jeypore 00:20:04.80\00:20:08.20 because when you walk in the gate, 00:20:08.24\00:20:10.31 the grounds, the trees, they always keep it clean. 00:20:10.34\00:20:14.94 They repaint from time to time. 00:20:14.98\00:20:17.25 The children are involved in doing the maintenance, 00:20:17.28\00:20:20.05 and doing the gardens, and that just makes 00:20:20.08\00:20:22.68 a total difference not only in the grounds 00:20:22.72\00:20:25.55 but on the development of the children themselves. 00:20:25.59\00:20:29.02 A harmonious development indeed. 00:20:29.06\00:20:31.89 Education in India is highly competitive 00:20:42.04\00:20:44.97 and the school as big and beautiful 00:20:45.01\00:20:47.38 as it may be has to compete 00:20:47.41\00:20:49.24 with other institutions for it to be influential, 00:20:49.28\00:20:52.61 and to continue to be held in high regard. 00:20:52.65\00:20:55.82 The trend of education is changing. 00:20:55.85\00:20:58.75 And the latest, we have digital classes. 00:20:58.79\00:21:03.02 And as you know throughout India, 00:21:03.06\00:21:04.69 there is a change in the education system, 00:21:04.73\00:21:08.60 and we want to go with the latest technology, 00:21:08.63\00:21:11.40 and that is why we opted for this digital class. 00:21:11.43\00:21:14.50 It is very user-friendly. 00:21:14.54\00:21:16.37 Students also can operate. 00:21:16.40\00:21:18.11 It's just like a TV remote. 00:21:18.14\00:21:21.28 Even if a teacher is absent, 00:21:21.31\00:21:23.28 still they have the subjects, 00:21:23.31\00:21:24.85 they have the chapters, 00:21:24.88\00:21:26.21 and they have the evaluation test. 00:21:26.25\00:21:28.58 The students can take the test by themselves, 00:21:28.62\00:21:32.62 and they can know 00:21:32.65\00:21:33.99 what score they are getting 00:21:34.02\00:21:35.36 in particular chapter or lesson. 00:21:35.39\00:21:37.79 Whatever the student needs to understand, 00:21:37.83\00:21:40.56 everything is given clearly. 00:21:40.60\00:21:42.50 And whatever the teacher is teaching in the classroom, 00:21:42.53\00:21:45.43 and what questions they have finished 00:21:45.47\00:21:47.80 in the classroom, 00:21:47.84\00:21:49.17 we can access that in the server room. 00:21:49.20\00:21:54.18 Cutting edge technology for the changing times. 00:21:54.21\00:21:57.78 Today, the Immanuel English School 00:21:57.81\00:21:59.51 at Jeypore is not only a boon for children 00:21:59.55\00:22:02.38 from tribal communities and villages, 00:22:02.42\00:22:04.69 but it's also a huge draw 00:22:04.72\00:22:06.62 for children from neighboring states. 00:22:06.65\00:22:09.62 Wow, look at that. 00:22:34.62\00:22:35.95 Just so many kids, 00:22:35.98\00:22:37.32 most of them from poor backgrounds, 00:22:37.35\00:22:39.12 most of them from tribal areas, 00:22:39.15\00:22:41.42 and look they're getting an education, 00:22:41.46\00:22:43.19 they're disciplined, 00:22:43.22\00:22:44.56 they're learning to be organized. 00:22:44.59\00:22:46.29 And the education is making a real difference to them. 00:22:46.33\00:22:49.23 I just wish I could bring some more in this. 00:22:49.26\00:22:51.30 So many out there and put them in this environment. 00:22:51.33\00:22:54.50 Look at it, it's just fabulous. 00:22:54.54\00:22:57.47 The growing realization of the need to bring 00:22:57.51\00:22:59.91 in many more children can be discouraging, 00:22:59.94\00:23:03.11 but it's reassuring to know that with sponsorship, 00:23:03.14\00:23:06.35 we can go about making a difference one day at a time. 00:23:06.38\00:23:10.35 When we are at home, 00:23:10.39\00:23:12.25 sometime we are not getting three meals to eat, 00:23:12.29\00:23:15.32 no good place to sleep. 00:23:15.36\00:23:17.36 So when schools are that, like this school, 00:23:17.39\00:23:20.43 they are providing meals, education, everything, 00:23:20.46\00:23:23.06 sponsors, they are struggling hard 00:23:23.10\00:23:25.00 to educate some other's lives. 00:23:25.03\00:23:27.04 That is something very great to understand. 00:23:27.07\00:23:29.90 Since sponsorship was there, I studied. 00:23:29.94\00:23:34.81 So I'm so much grateful to my sponsor. 00:23:34.84\00:23:37.38 And to me, it's really wonderful 00:23:37.41\00:23:39.01 just to see the changes, 00:23:39.05\00:23:40.85 you know, when you see a child come looking dirty, 00:23:40.88\00:23:44.75 and unhappy, 00:23:44.79\00:23:46.12 and know that nobody cares about them. 00:23:46.15\00:23:48.52 And then after a very short time 00:23:48.56\00:23:50.73 to see the transformation, 00:23:50.76\00:23:52.09 and then after a few years to see them really doing well, 00:23:52.13\00:23:56.40 I think that's what makes it worthwhile. 00:23:56.43\00:24:00.07 Devoki, although having better offers 00:24:00.10\00:24:02.34 to teach outside in bigger cities, 00:24:02.37\00:24:04.77 has come back to teach in the place 00:24:04.81\00:24:07.18 that gave her a new chance in life. 00:24:07.21\00:24:10.91 Actually my education, 00:24:10.95\00:24:13.92 my foundation started from here. 00:24:13.95\00:24:16.52 So I thought first let me serve to my place, 00:24:16.55\00:24:20.12 the place where I belong to, 00:24:20.16\00:24:21.52 where I've got my foundation. 00:24:21.56\00:24:23.43 Whatever talent I have, let me show to those people, 00:24:23.46\00:24:25.89 so that those students also will learn about that. 00:24:25.93\00:24:29.90 That's so lovely to see some of the young people 00:24:29.93\00:24:32.53 with that kind of commitment and gratitude to Asian Aid, 00:24:32.57\00:24:35.64 and for the sponsors that have helped them 00:24:35.67\00:24:37.77 to get an education and to be where they are.
