A little over a year ago, 00:00:04.30\00:00:05.73 when my husband Shawn and I 00:00:05.77\00:00:07.24 decided to sponsor a child through Asian Aid, 00:00:07.27\00:00:10.04 I never would have imagined 00:00:10.07\00:00:11.81 that I would end up meeting our sponsored child in India. 00:00:11.84\00:00:15.18 I'm thinking I want to become nurse. 00:00:15.21\00:00:18.88 It was an experience made more incredible and exciting 00:00:18.91\00:00:22.45 because this was also our daughter's 00:00:22.48\00:00:24.62 first trip outside of North America. 00:00:24.65\00:00:27.42 Well, I was super excited about coming. 00:00:27.46\00:00:29.72 I mean, I knew it would be a life-changing experience, 00:00:29.76\00:00:31.79 and it has been so far. 00:00:31.83\00:00:33.56 Together, we discovered a land full of color and contrast. 00:00:33.60\00:00:37.60 We met Sheila, our sponsored daughter, 00:00:37.63\00:00:39.93 rode on a school bus with her, and in doing all this, 00:00:39.97\00:00:43.17 I came across people who put their lives in danger 00:00:43.20\00:00:46.47 to rescue girls in peril. 00:00:46.51\00:00:49.04 The risk is huge. 00:00:49.08\00:00:50.41 I've always known that there is a risk in this 00:00:50.45\00:00:52.91 of being involved. 00:00:52.95\00:00:54.28 But I think... 00:00:54.32\00:00:55.95 I don't think we can sit quiet about it either. 00:00:55.98\00:00:58.69 And witness the wondrous work being carried out in the slums. 00:00:58.72\00:01:03.02 We experienced firsthand 00:01:03.06\00:01:05.19 the transformation Asian Aid is making 00:01:05.23\00:01:07.63 in the lives of thousands of children across India. 00:01:07.66\00:01:10.50 Asian Aid is an organization giving hope, 00:01:25.51\00:01:28.55 an organization fostering permanent positive change 00:01:28.58\00:01:31.72 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:01:31.75\00:01:33.69 and their communities. 00:01:33.72\00:01:35.69 An organization that is committed 00:01:35.72\00:01:37.36 to making a difference in the lives of children 00:01:37.39\00:01:39.73 and those who are in need, 00:01:39.76\00:01:41.30 serving communities in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, 00:01:41.33\00:01:45.60 Myanmar, and India. 00:01:45.63\00:01:47.54 For the last 40 years, 00:01:55.28\00:01:57.15 Asian Aid has invested in the futures of people 00:01:57.18\00:01:59.91 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:01:59.95\00:02:04.12 Driven by their dedication to helping those 00:02:04.15\00:02:06.76 who have the least, 00:02:06.79\00:02:08.22 Asian Aid is an organization 00:02:08.26\00:02:10.03 focused on the welfare of children, 00:02:10.06\00:02:12.43 implementing diverse development projects, 00:02:12.46\00:02:15.26 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:02:15.30\00:02:17.93 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations, 00:02:17.97\00:02:21.34 to providing an education for orphans, 00:02:21.37\00:02:23.57 deaf and the blind children. 00:02:23.61\00:02:26.41 Giving them a sense of place, a home, 00:02:26.44\00:02:29.04 but above all, 00:02:29.08\00:02:30.58 Asian Aid is an organization giving hope, 00:02:30.61\00:02:33.68 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:02:33.72\00:02:37.09 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:02:37.12\00:02:41.22 This is Hope in Motion. 00:02:41.26\00:02:43.73 We arrive at Bangalore, India, 00:03:11.79\00:03:13.86 late at night on the 2nd of July. 00:03:13.89\00:03:17.13 A day's rest and some shopping did us good 00:03:17.16\00:03:19.93 and rejuvenates us for the long trip ahead. 00:03:19.96\00:03:23.16 We are ready for our Indian adventure. 00:03:23.20\00:03:27.44 Has this city always been busy like this? 00:03:27.47\00:03:30.41 No, this city has changed. 00:03:30.44\00:03:32.54 I've lived in this city now for 17 years. 00:03:32.57\00:03:35.64 And the last 10 years, I would say, 00:03:35.68\00:03:38.08 the city has really changed. 00:03:38.11\00:03:39.88 I think there's been an influx of people. 00:03:39.91\00:03:42.85 This city is the IT hub of India. 00:03:42.88\00:03:45.52 And I think in the last 10 years, 00:03:45.55\00:03:48.52 every major multinational 00:03:48.56\00:03:51.13 has moved an office to Bangalore. 00:03:51.16\00:03:53.93 The following day, we meet with Anita at Oasis. 00:03:53.96\00:03:57.23 Now Oasis's office is tucked behind a gate 00:03:57.27\00:04:00.20 with only a small, nondescript sign 00:04:00.24\00:04:02.70 indicating its presence. 00:04:02.74\00:04:04.41 We slip upstairs and meet Anita and her team, 00:04:04.44\00:04:07.74 a group of about 10 people. 00:04:07.78\00:04:09.68 Oasis is a rescue operation, 00:04:13.35\00:04:15.62 rescuing girls from human trafficking. 00:04:15.65\00:04:18.55 Young girls are trafficked, confined, and raped, 00:04:18.59\00:04:21.76 then forced into the prostitution trade. 00:04:21.79\00:04:24.89 Jim and I meet Anita in her office. 00:04:24.93\00:04:27.56 She tells us that corruption and lack of manpower 00:04:27.60\00:04:30.63 in the enforcement agencies 00:04:30.67\00:04:32.63 has made this a rampant problem in big cities like Bangalore. 00:04:32.67\00:04:37.91 It is a huge problem in India. 00:04:37.94\00:04:39.71 I think the US puts the figures at about 100 million, 00:04:39.74\00:04:42.58 but the actual figures will be much, much higher 00:04:42.61\00:04:45.91 because these figures are from about four years ago. 00:04:45.95\00:04:50.45 I think the people on the ground 00:04:50.49\00:04:52.85 see for themselves 00:04:52.89\00:04:54.22 the number of people being rescued. 00:04:54.26\00:04:55.92 So in this last six months, we've had 42 girls 00:04:55.96\00:04:59.76 from Bangladesh alone rescued in one district in Bangalore. 00:04:59.79\00:05:04.87 So you can imagine the numbers 00:05:04.90\00:05:07.00 that are coming in from Bangladesh, from Nepal. 00:05:07.04\00:05:09.57 But the numbers trafficked within India are huge as well. 00:05:09.60\00:05:13.44 The primary motive at Oasis 00:05:13.48\00:05:15.84 is to rescue these trafficked girls, 00:05:15.88\00:05:18.65 but it's not as easy as it sounds. 00:05:18.68\00:05:21.25 There is a lot of planning, networking, 00:05:21.28\00:05:23.49 and in almost all cases, 00:05:23.52\00:05:25.55 this involves undercover operations. 00:05:25.59\00:05:28.06 The risk is huge and the situation is delicate 00:05:35.36\00:05:38.40 and complicated. 00:05:38.43\00:05:40.04 Anita and her team have been threatened physically. 00:05:40.07\00:05:43.14 There're tremendous sums of money involved. 00:05:43.17\00:05:46.41 The risk is huge. 00:05:46.44\00:05:47.78 I've always known that there is a risk in this 00:05:47.81\00:05:50.41 of being involved. 00:05:50.45\00:05:51.78 But I think... 00:05:51.81\00:05:53.21 I don't think we can sit quiet about it either 00:05:53.25\00:05:55.65 being an Indian woman myself. 00:05:55.68\00:05:57.45 And having seen what happens and having seen the fact that 00:05:57.49\00:06:01.26 people do not want to get involved 00:06:01.29\00:06:03.19 in really high risk things. 00:06:03.22\00:06:07.20 When the girls are rescued, 00:06:07.23\00:06:08.70 it does not necessarily mean freedom. 00:06:08.73\00:06:11.43 They face a lot of emotional and physical challenges. 00:06:11.47\00:06:15.47 They are, understandably, afraid and ashamed. 00:06:15.50\00:06:19.41 They're cut off from any support from family. 00:06:19.44\00:06:22.68 The physical abuse these girls undergo 00:06:22.71\00:06:25.01 during captivity is appalling. 00:06:25.05\00:06:28.38 I think if I have to speak 00:06:28.42\00:06:30.95 about the worst kind of cases I've seen, 00:06:30.99\00:06:33.69 I saw a 2.5-year-old girl 00:06:33.72\00:06:35.82 who had been slashed many times around her waist 00:06:35.86\00:06:40.83 and her bottom 00:06:40.86\00:06:42.86 and had been burnt with cigarette butts. 00:06:42.90\00:06:45.83 All around... 00:06:45.87\00:06:47.30 Yeah, all around her private parts. 00:06:47.34\00:06:49.60 I think that was one of the worst... 00:06:49.64\00:06:51.71 The level of abuse sometimes is just huge and horrid. 00:06:51.74\00:06:55.51 When they're first brought in, and they're broken, 00:06:55.54\00:06:58.51 you know, the will to do this is broken. 00:06:58.55\00:07:01.82 They're abused very, very badly by the pimps. 00:07:01.85\00:07:04.32 And so, during that time they're chained, 00:07:04.35\00:07:06.25 they're beaten, they're starved, 00:07:06.29\00:07:08.49 and physically very badly abused. 00:07:08.52\00:07:11.23 Asian Aid, with its Operation Child Rescue program 00:07:15.70\00:07:18.90 has joined hands with Oasis, 00:07:18.93\00:07:21.00 supporting them with funds 00:07:21.04\00:07:22.57 necessary to facilitate this rescue effort 00:07:22.60\00:07:25.37 and the crucial rehabilitation for the children. 00:07:25.41\00:07:29.51 Sitting and talking to Anita, I'm made aware of the huge risk 00:07:29.54\00:07:33.48 that she is taking 00:07:33.52\00:07:35.08 and the dedication and courage she has 00:07:35.12\00:07:37.59 to undertake this dangerous mission. 00:07:37.62\00:07:40.79 I think if I wasn't doing this 00:07:40.82\00:07:42.92 and if I wasn't being involved in this, 00:07:42.96\00:07:46.96 I don't think my heart would be silent on this. 00:07:47.00\00:07:50.30 Yeah, I think I choose to have the courage to do this. 00:07:50.33\00:07:55.30 Anita's motives are purely Christian. 00:07:55.34\00:07:58.17 She knows that the only hope for these girls 00:07:58.21\00:08:00.68 to recover from the abuse they've suffered 00:08:00.71\00:08:03.51 is the hope that Christ can give. 00:08:03.55\00:08:06.48 Oasis doesn't have its own rehab home 00:08:06.51\00:08:08.88 and currently, relies on government facilities. 00:08:08.92\00:08:11.79 Anita's goal is to have a home of their own. 00:08:11.82\00:08:15.12 Sadly, many of the girls rescued 00:08:15.16\00:08:17.26 cannot overcome the pain or the shame. 00:08:17.29\00:08:20.80 Some return to the lifestyle willingly 00:08:20.83\00:08:23.33 and rehabilitation is a crucial step. 00:08:23.37\00:08:27.60 Coming out of the meeting with Anita, 00:08:27.64\00:08:29.50 I am full of hope and encouragement 00:08:29.54\00:08:31.87 for what she and her team are doing, 00:08:31.91\00:08:34.14 at the same time, my heart is troubled 00:08:34.18\00:08:37.11 as I try to comprehend 00:08:37.15\00:08:38.71 the problems faced by innocent young girls in India. 00:08:38.75\00:08:42.62 This is not the sort of beginning I had in mind 00:08:42.65\00:08:45.75 when I first set out for India. 00:08:45.79\00:08:47.69 On the plane ride from Bangalore to Vishakhapatnam 00:08:53.73\00:08:56.93 on the east coast of the Indian peninsula, 00:08:56.97\00:08:59.80 I have enough time to reflect on my meeting with Anita. 00:08:59.83\00:09:03.57 I wonder what we'll experience on the rest of our journey. 00:09:03.61\00:09:07.51 Slowly, the unsettled feeling fades, 00:09:07.54\00:09:09.84 and I focus on the exciting next step. 00:09:09.88\00:09:12.68 Vishakhapatnam, or Vizag as it's commonly known, 00:09:21.26\00:09:24.26 is hot and humid. 00:09:24.29\00:09:26.59 From the airport, we are driven straight to a slum settlement 00:09:26.63\00:09:30.17 in the center of the city. 00:09:30.20\00:09:32.10 Just walking through its narrow alley 00:09:32.13\00:09:34.47 is an experience in itself. 00:09:34.50\00:09:37.81 We're guided to a freshly painted building. 00:09:37.84\00:09:40.54 It's an Adventist school in the heart of the slum. 00:09:40.58\00:09:43.55 This was unexpected. 00:09:43.58\00:09:45.75 We are introduced to Naomi, the school principal, 00:09:45.78\00:09:48.88 and we get to meet the kids in her classrooms. 00:09:48.92\00:09:51.32 Gathered on the rooftop, the pleasant breeze 00:10:02.26\00:10:05.17 is a welcome relief. 00:10:05.20\00:10:06.90 We're here in Vizag, 00:10:10.37\00:10:11.71 and we've just visited slum school 00:10:11.74\00:10:14.11 that's been recently renovated. 00:10:14.14\00:10:16.78 They've done a lot of renovations 00:10:16.81\00:10:18.25 particularly up here 00:10:18.28\00:10:19.65 where we're gathered with the children 00:10:19.68\00:10:21.18 here on the roof. 00:10:21.22\00:10:22.82 This is an amazing experience to see the area 00:10:22.85\00:10:26.35 that these kids live in that surrounds the school here. 00:10:26.39\00:10:29.69 It's been great to be here. 00:10:29.72\00:10:31.06 We get to come back in a few days. 00:10:31.09\00:10:32.43 We're going to have the dedication 00:10:32.46\00:10:33.86 for this newly renovated slum school. 00:10:33.90\00:10:35.86 After spending a couple of hours 00:10:40.14\00:10:42.00 at the slum school, we head out to Bobbili. 00:10:42.04\00:10:44.54 Arriving at the Asian Aid School 00:10:55.88\00:10:57.82 for the Blind in Bobbili, we receive a warm welcome. 00:10:57.85\00:11:02.02 Boys and girls on each side of the entrance way 00:11:02.06\00:11:04.66 greet us with flowers and handshakes. 00:11:04.69\00:11:07.56 I am surprised by how many more boys there are than girls. 00:11:07.60\00:11:11.67 There are about 50 girls and 120 boys 00:11:11.70\00:11:15.14 that live here at the school. 00:11:15.17\00:11:17.21 Later, Pastor Paulson, the school principal, 00:11:17.24\00:11:19.91 takes us on the tour of the campus. 00:11:19.94\00:11:22.51 It's amazing to see 00:11:22.54\00:11:23.88 how the blind children are taught 00:11:23.91\00:11:26.01 and how they learn 00:11:26.05\00:11:27.38 with their specialized equipment. 00:11:27.42\00:11:29.18 The Blind School will be our home 00:11:29.22\00:11:31.32 for the rest of our stay in India. 00:11:31.35\00:11:34.39 So we're staying here at the Asian Aid School 00:11:34.42\00:11:36.73 for the Blind in Bobbili, and it's absolutely beautiful. 00:11:36.76\00:11:39.69 Everything's green this time of year, 00:11:39.73\00:11:41.56 the flowers are blooming, 00:11:41.60\00:11:43.10 we even got to eat some guava, 00:11:43.13\00:11:45.07 and even more beautiful are the students staying here. 00:11:45.10\00:11:48.64 We had the privilege this morning 00:11:48.67\00:11:50.51 of going through the school, 00:11:50.54\00:11:51.97 Pastor Paulson showed Natalie and Naomi around, 00:11:52.01\00:11:54.71 and the beautiful wide, open hallways 00:11:54.74\00:11:57.88 where the students can easily maneuver their way around. 00:11:57.91\00:12:00.88 We got to see where they live. 00:12:00.92\00:12:02.52 It was an incredible privilege to see the kids 00:12:02.55\00:12:05.69 doing their math using writing Braille, 00:12:05.72\00:12:08.62 using the Braille computers. 00:12:08.66\00:12:10.26 It was amazing. 00:12:10.29\00:12:12.03 And we're so thankful to be able to be here. 00:12:12.06\00:12:14.43 We're really close to where Sunrise Home is 00:12:14.46\00:12:16.83 and where Sheila lives. 00:12:16.87\00:12:18.33 And we're looking forward to getting to meet her soon, 00:12:18.37\00:12:20.47 and just incredibly blessed to be able to see 00:12:20.50\00:12:24.17 and stay at these amazing facilities 00:12:24.21\00:12:27.34 here at the Blind School. 00:12:27.38\00:12:28.71 On Sabbath morning, we attend church in Bobbili. 00:12:36.18\00:12:39.15 This is Sheila's church. 00:12:39.19\00:12:40.89 It's nice to see children form Sunrise Home there 00:12:40.92\00:12:44.09 and taking part in the Sabbath school program. 00:12:44.13\00:12:47.40 The girls and I greet Sheila warmly. 00:12:47.43\00:12:50.03 We can't talk much on this day, 00:12:50.07\00:12:52.43 but it's an incredible experience 00:12:52.47\00:12:54.44 to worship in Sheila's church with her. 00:12:54.47\00:12:57.67 I'm overwhelmed with emotion. 00:12:57.71\00:13:00.21 Change is possible. 00:13:00.24\00:13:01.78 In the afternoon, we visit the village of Karada. 00:13:17.96\00:13:21.53 The village is not far from Sunrise Home, 00:13:21.56\00:13:23.77 and on the edge of town, 00:13:23.80\00:13:25.13 there is a church built a few years ago 00:13:25.17\00:13:27.27 by Maranatha. 00:13:27.30\00:13:28.77 Well, I'm here in the village of Karada 00:13:33.38\00:13:35.31 which is real close to the new Sunrise Home 00:13:35.34\00:13:38.31 that we are just completing. 00:13:38.35\00:13:40.45 The exciting thing about this village is 00:13:40.48\00:13:42.98 that the children and staff from the Sunrise Home 00:13:43.02\00:13:45.82 become involved with this village 00:13:45.85\00:13:48.09 both in Sabbath school and church 00:13:48.12\00:13:50.06 and a church nearby that hasn't had any leadership 00:13:50.09\00:13:54.26 and also with community work with health training. 00:13:54.30\00:13:58.13 The great news is that the investment 00:13:58.17\00:14:00.20 that many donors made in the Sunrise 00:14:00.24\00:14:02.74 is now paying off in the wider community, 00:14:02.77\00:14:05.97 and we're real proud of that at Asian Aid. 00:14:06.01\00:14:10.18 And the next day, we go to Sunrise Home 00:14:10.21\00:14:12.41 to spend the day with Sheila, our sponsored daughter, 00:14:12.45\00:14:15.45 and to have some dedicated time with her. 00:14:15.48\00:14:18.32 This is the day we've been waiting so long for, 00:14:18.35\00:14:21.32 and we are excited. 00:14:21.36\00:14:23.46 We have so many questions about her day-to-day life, 00:14:23.49\00:14:26.29 and we can't wait to spend time at Sunrise Home. 00:14:26.33\00:14:29.93 Reaching Sunrise, we are greeted by Lalitha, 00:14:41.68\00:14:44.45 the director, and all the kids. 00:14:44.48\00:14:47.12 The girls all wear beautiful matching saris. 00:14:47.15\00:14:50.82 We enjoy a quick tour of the facility. 00:14:50.85\00:14:53.36 It's a very hot day. 00:14:53.39\00:14:55.49 And so, soon, all the kids go inside to rest and cool off. 00:14:55.52\00:14:59.09 And Natalie and Naomi are invited along, 00:14:59.13\00:15:01.66 and they gladly joined them. 00:15:01.70\00:15:03.80 This gives me an opportunity to talk with Lalitha. 00:15:03.83\00:15:08.30 So what was the old home like? 00:15:08.34\00:15:10.01 I mean, this is beautiful, you've got a lot of open space, 00:15:10.04\00:15:12.94 what was your old home like? 00:15:12.97\00:15:14.31 Old home is like congested. 00:15:14.34\00:15:17.35 Children eating in same place, drinking, eating, sleeping, 00:15:17.38\00:15:21.55 watching TV, prayer... 00:15:21.58\00:15:23.65 In the same room, 00:15:23.69\00:15:25.59 they used to conduct everything there only, 00:15:25.62\00:15:27.39 but after we came here, 00:15:27.42\00:15:29.22 children, they have a special prayer room, 00:15:29.26\00:15:31.56 they have special rooms to sleep, 00:15:31.59\00:15:34.36 and they have a special dining hall to eat. 00:15:34.40\00:15:37.63 So they have big playground, 00:15:37.67\00:15:40.20 and they are enjoying the facilities what we have. 00:15:40.24\00:15:43.00 Well, our sponsored daughter, Sheila, 00:15:43.04\00:15:45.67 we're so happy to meet here. 00:15:45.71\00:15:47.48 She is such a sweet, beautiful girl. 00:15:47.51\00:15:49.88 And my husband is so sad 00:15:49.91\00:15:51.48 he wasn't able to come and meet her. 00:15:51.51\00:15:53.45 But my daughters and I have loved meeting her. 00:15:53.48\00:15:56.48 We've written to her a few times, 00:15:56.52\00:15:57.95 and we've gotten to know her here, 00:15:57.99\00:15:59.32 but we don't know really a lot of her story. 00:15:59.35\00:16:02.32 Can you tell me a little bit about 00:16:02.36\00:16:03.93 how she ended up here? 00:16:03.96\00:16:05.29 Do you remember how it was when she arrived? 00:16:05.33\00:16:07.56 Yeah, I want to show her photo when she came here. 00:16:07.60\00:16:11.53 She was 9 years old, like 10 years old. 00:16:11.57\00:16:14.67 And she is having big stomach 00:16:14.70\00:16:17.64 and small, thin legs. 00:16:17.67\00:16:21.98 Was she malnourished? 00:16:22.01\00:16:23.41 Is that why... Malnutrition. 00:16:23.45\00:16:24.98 Because she didn't have enough of food. 00:16:25.01\00:16:26.48 That's sad. 00:16:26.51\00:16:27.85 So after they came here, they will have a lot to eat. 00:16:27.88\00:16:31.19 So we will provide them whatever they want. 00:16:31.22\00:16:33.76 So she don't have mother, mother died. 00:16:33.79\00:16:37.96 Father was there, 00:16:37.99\00:16:39.33 and father again married another woman. 00:16:39.36\00:16:42.30 Oh, I see. 00:16:42.33\00:16:43.67 So stepmother, she won't take care of her. 00:16:43.70\00:16:45.20 She didn't take care of Sheila. 00:16:45.23\00:16:46.63 Oh, that breaks my heart. 00:16:46.67\00:16:48.07 So at that time, she came here. 00:16:48.10\00:16:49.97 Father himself... 00:16:50.01\00:16:51.51 And one of the pastors, they recommended here, 00:16:51.54\00:16:55.68 so she was brought here. 00:16:55.71\00:16:58.88 Aw, this is Sheila's file? 00:16:58.91\00:17:00.38 Yeah, this is Sheila when she came to Sunrise Home. 00:17:00.42\00:17:03.42 Oh, wow! 00:17:03.45\00:17:04.79 Here, you can see her small, very thin hands. 00:17:04.82\00:17:08.56 Oh, she looks like a different person. 00:17:08.59\00:17:09.99 Yeah. 00:17:10.03\00:17:11.36 This is the dress, when she came here, 00:17:11.39\00:17:13.53 I have bought for her. 00:17:13.56\00:17:14.90 You got a special dress for her? 00:17:14.93\00:17:16.26 Yeah, special dress, then this is the uniform. 00:17:16.30\00:17:17.83 Aw, 1990. 00:17:17.87\00:17:19.73 And you can see here...
